Inside Out 2
This is going to be pretty long, I think. Spoilers ahead.
I went to go see this with my siblings earlier this evening and oh. my. goodness. IT. WAS. AMAZING!!!
I did not go into it with high expectations, expecting another "first draft" movie. But no. It actually felt like a PIXAR movie.
Okay, the new emotions:
Anxiety: My immediate new favorite character. I love her wacky design and her VA (wasn't sure how Maya Hawke would do, but I absolutely ADORED her here). Also, as someone with GAD, she is my default emotion. I couldn't even hate her when she became the primary antagonist. And that panic attack scene. like.
Envy: Adorable. That's all I have to say. just. adorable. Again, character design and VA were perfect. I was kind of surprised that she was such a soft character. Almost seemed more like "emulation" or "admiration" than "envy." Wonder if they'll explore the harder/darker side of envy later I have only seen it once, so I could just be forgetting a part. I think there may have been a part where Envy caused Riley to side with the Firehawks. Anyway.
Ennui: Enjoyable character. Got a few laughs. Character design is fun like the others. I don't have strong opinions about them. I liked them.
Embarrassment: I liked the character design. "He's not big on eye contact or touching." Same dude. same. I was in physical pain whenever he was on screen, but I think that was the point. Also his teaming up with and hiding Sadness was so cute/sweet. Big marshmallow.
I've heard that guilt/shame were supposed to be involved. I would have loved this, but I can see how that might have made the movie a little too busy.
Now, the movie itself:
Some parts were rushed, but since this is a movie about anxiety, I'm not mad. Some worldbuilding parts could have been fleshed out more; it's only an hour and a half long, they could have made it a bit longer without it becoming tedious. Just linger on a few scenes a little.
Riley was ridiculously relatable. I mean, she always was, but this movie it's like they got footage of me. Except I got those feelings/thought processes a lot earlier than 13 and they've never gone away (if anything, they're getting worse. thanks burnout).
As someone who finds secondhand embarrassment to be physically painful, I spent most of the movie with my hands over my face. At one point (I think during the secrets vault) I slid down in my chair because I couldn't take it anymore. The squeaks and shrieks I had to keep quiet. I tell you.
As painful as those parts were, they were still cathartic. I felt seen. Having interests intended for much younger people. Being super conscientious about those interests and pretty much everything else to the point of missing the conversation. Constantly monitoring myself and being terrified that if I didn't I would end up alone. The conflicting self-images. The phrase of Riley's anxiety-driven self being "I'm not good enough" and anxiety being confused and trying to spin it as "just means we have room to improve" (or something like that). The panic attack. Oh my gosh the panic attack was perfect. The whirlwind and simultaneous paralysis. This movie made me cry so many times.
I am obsessed with this movie and will probably post a lot of art about it.

I ABSOLUTELY FUCKING HATE THOSE ANNOYING ASS PARENTS (SPECIFICALLY CHRISTIAN ONES, no offense to y'all, just learn TO FUCKING MIND UR BUSINESS AND USE COMMON SENSE) SAYING AND YAPPING ABOUT "erm guys, you uhm, shouldn't take ur kids to watch inside out 2 🤓👆" LIKE SHUT THE FUCK UP KAREN AND LISTEN TO MY DAMN REASONS NOBODY GIVES A SHIT ABOUT
Reason number one- you're five year olds aren't the targated demographic for this movie
Yes come at me all you fucking want but this isn't like the first movie where it's much more innocent and doesn't handle heavy topics like having an anxiety attack and puberty, I'm sorry Karen but you're two six year old kids won't be needing to learn about what puberty is, TRUST ME THAT IS GOING TO SAVED FOR ANOTHER TIME, and it was obvious this movie is targated for teens, especially the ones born in 2010 cause like half of y'all (including me) are 12/13 years old already, and just because it's a Pixar film doesn't mean it can't be mature it was definitely not targated for people under puberty
Reason number two- take a fucking hint and stop being homophobic
Personally me, RILEY X VAL IS A HILL I AM WILLING TO DIE ON, I WILL DEFEND THAT SHIP LIKE MY LIFE DEPENDS ON IT, but from a more...different view...just because two girls are interacting and holding hands DOES NOT FUCKING MEAN THEY'RE DATING TAKE A FUCKING HINT YOU TRUMP SUPPORTER, sure Riley x val may not be canon due to obvious homophobic people complaining, and a kinda underrated one where people think the age gap is too big given that Riley is a freshman but I think Val might be a sophomore? Not sure it's never like mentioned but calling val a super senior is fucking weeeird bro, and also Disney is a SHIT at writing gay couples and probably would stereotype them is more to add of how bad it'll make them look
Number three- surprisingly there's racism???
Not really a big one but I've heard some people complaining about Val's hockey team, saying it's "too diverse"...BITCH WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN " TOO DIVERSE " YOU WANT EVERYONE TO BE AS WHITE AS RILEY??? not much to speak on here but it truly is infuriating
Number four- Riley's belief system makes her a bad person??
Another small one but still very annoying people complaining that Riley's not a good person and has a bad belief system but even though she considers herself a good person but makes mistakes it doesn't matter because God isn't in it and that alone apparently makes her a bad person...SHUT THE FUCK UP, I'M ALL FOR RESPECTING RELIGIONS BUT THE PEOPLE I HATE MOST ON EARTH ARE FUCKING CHRISTIANS LIKE TAKE A FUCKING HINT WHAT HAPPENED TO LOVE THY NEIGHBOR??? SHIT WENT OUT THE WINDOW SINCE ADAM AND EVE SINNED
And number five- peoples ever decreasing media literacy
Every since the movie came out people have been complaining over Anxiety and saying she's "the villain"...im going to take your hand while I'm saying this...DO Y'ALL NOT KNOW WHAT FUCKING ANXIETY IS SHE LITERALLY EXPLAINS IT HER FUCKING SELF WHEN SHE'S FIRST INTRODUCED YOU DUMB BITCHES, " B-But she made Riley have a panic attack🥺🥺 " first of all It's an ANXIETY ATTACK second, people were saying "w-why was anxiety making Riley over think and worry so much? 🥺🥺" TAKE A LONG WILD GUESS IT'S IN HER FUCKING NAME, I'm convinced people who went to watch it, saw thirty minutes of it then left cause they didn't even know what anxiety is and what it causes, half of the people watching don't understand anxiety's motives CAUSE Y'ALL HAVE NEVER HAD ANXIETY, coming from someone who has anxiety and social anxiety I get where she's coming from (and maybe secretly rooting for her at the end, like fr let her cook) and y'all wouldn't have acted like this in the first movie cause everyone HAS experienced sadness, everyone HAS HAD sad moments so it's no difference with anxiety, except this time only a certain amount of people will get it
Also am I the only but I fucking HATED Riley's friends like they were SO GODDAMN ANNOYING 💀💀

The Pixar shift saga continued:
All over twitter and even BlueSky, I see it, and it's quite something. Hell, people I know who barely ever talk about animation, or film or pop culture for that matter, are talking about it... Animators, artists, filmmakers, critics... All calling it out.
Namely, Pixar CCO Pete Docter's words on having Pixar - at the behest of Disney executives - move away from telling "autobiographical" stories, making films that are personal to their respective filmmakers... Hollow, corporate words that I bet he was "supposed" to say.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The backlash is almost feverish. To the point where some are reading it as Pixar catering to white people only, given that two of those "autobiographical" films are... Let's see... TURNING RED, directed by Chinese-Canadian Domee Shi, and ELEMENTAL, directed by Korean-American Peter Sohn. SOUL as well, Docter's latest directorial endeavor, which was co-directed/written by Kemp Powers. Whether the intent is "no more autobiographical/personal stories" or "no more stories told from different cultural backgrounds", the pull quote is still NOT a good look. Hell, I'd say this looks worse than the time John Lasseter fired Brenda Chapman off of BRAVE.
And I wonder if this quote, otherwise tucked away on some cynical Bloomberg article whose writer feels that sequels will "restore Pixar's magic", getting all this scrutiny online possibly leads to... Pipe dream... A clarification at the very least? Some kind of backtracking?
Look I'm no dummy, corporations are gonna corporation. I'm pretty sure if Disney overlords are mandating it, it's gonna happen either way. Bob Iger's whole deal, after taking back the reigns from Bob Chapek (who he appointed in the first place), is this need to make the films "better". And that means interfering with the filmmakers instead of considering every other variable: High budgets, competition, a much different marketplace, how COVID wrecked everything and accelerating long-gestating problems in the industry, etc.
But the statements didn't go unnoticed, and there's some hot water brewing. Maybe an animation news site, particularly one that practically THRIVES off of this kind of drama, amplifies it. And maybe, just maybe... A little controversy erupts over it? Part of me feels that this won't go unnoticed, it already hasn't in some circles. Twitter and BlueSky and such are not real life, but I think the eruption over this quote speaks volumes. Pixar is often associated with original storytelling that's often from the filmmakers' passions and hearts, and to hear Docter essentially say "We're not going to do that anymore" has been a shock to many, myself included.
And again, if you've read my previous rants on this, I don't blame Docter. I think he's merely just saying what Iger's cronies want him to say. He said something similar a year ago after ELEMENTAL was released:
"I always felt that ELEMENTAL would speak to a lot of people, and I'm so happy it has... But we have also taken another look at the projects we're working on now. What are the kinds of films we want to be making? I really think I want to double down on what allowed us to speak to audiences to begin with."
This quote, from October of last year, went relatively unnoticed. This seems to put it into perspective better, even if it's a little more vague. This sounds more "let's play up certain commercial elements" and not "squash out the personal stuff".
I don't mind a compromise where an artistic vision shares the 90 minutes with what the bean counters call "general appeal" or whatever. Often times, that's just how the sausage is even made in animation-land, even if it makes for results we might not always like. That's literally the entirety of Disney Animation's output from the mid-'90s up until the mid-'00s. Films like HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME had things like the silly gargoyles and fart jokes, yet they were still allowed to have some really great stuff in them and really cool filmmaking that young animation fans marvel at today. It's even a thing in the praised '10s movies, too. And a lot of the non-Disneys, too. NIMONA, for example. Take away the punk edge and LGBTQIA+ perspective, and it's quite similar to a lot of Western animated movies, particularly the "mild-mannered character gets saddled with the funny and unpredictable sidekick" thing with Ballister and Nimona, and that end-of-2nd-act breakup.
Outside of the SPIDER-VERSE movies and maybe PUSS IN BOOTS 2, it's typically imperfect in the American feature animation circuit. There's almost always behind the scenes battles and compromising, and ultimately, I'm happy if we still get a film that looks like something the filmmakers had a great time making and were able to work around certain notes/mandates/etc.
This is merely speculation on my part, but what matters is that the quote that's under fire is recent. Like, days ago recent. And I wonder what'll happen from here... Things go as Iger wants them to go? Or some kind of attempt at correction?

Kingdom Hearts x New Princesses 👑
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay! This next KH4 post is about the new princesses of heart! Now I know there were alot of princesses in the last few games, although most of them were from the classic Renaissance movies. But since KH3 we learned that there are some new princesses joining the games! So here is my list of who might be the new 7 Hearts in KH4!
· · ♡ · · Characters · · ♡ · ·
🐻 Merida : Okay this one is more for me lol, since I think Merida is really cool! But since KH is diving into more Pixar worlds and movies, it would kind of make sense to put her in KH4. The way I think the KH gang(s) might meet Merida is if they happen to see her at the archery contest first. They see the contest happening and how amazing she is at archery. So, after the contest, they decide to head into town and ask around. Maybe to ask for information about Sora, or perhaps Kairi feels a connection coming from the castle. Since what I've gathered from the games is that Kairi still is a PoH? But anywho, Merida runs away, and boom! Movie plot happens!
I can feel this kind of route going similar to the Tangled world, where the gang gets separated from Merida for a little bit. But then they run into Mama Bear Elenor and find out what happened. I feel like having the player saving everyone from Mord'u when Merida finds the castle ruins would be an intersting fight, or maybe there would be a mini-game where you have to help Merida catch fish in the river. Although I can see the main point of this plotline being where the player has to help change Merida's mom back. With either Mord'u or even King Fergus as a boss fight near the end.
🌊 Moana : Okay this one I've seen everywhere, and I can see why this would make a cool world in KH! Moana is a really popular princess and she has such a cool story that I feel would fit Kingdom Hearts really well! I can imagine going similar to POTC world, where the gang ends up in the middle of the ocean. Although maybe instead of finding an island or finding Moana, they accidently arrive at the Realm of Monsters tower and fall in. Soon after, they find Maui and Moana and you have to fight Tamatoa. I can imagine that being a pretty crazy fight.
As for mini-games and special mechanics added to this world, one has to be sailing. That's the main mode of transport so maybe it can be similar to the Pirates of the Carribean world, but instead of a ship you have to maneuver Moana's boat. As well as take a look at the correct constellations in the sky so can move in the right direction. Kinda of like a "find-the-clue" game except with a starry sky! Although, as another boss fight, or maybe even a mini-boss, you have to outrun the Kakamora who are throwing coconuts or little arrow thingies at you.
🪶 Pocahontas : This one I’m kinda excited for too! Seeing as, in my opinion, Pocahontas is super underrated. Plus, it'd be cool seeing Sora and the gang dressed up like formal English men/women arriving on the ship! Although, since I don’t want a repeat of Moana or Jack Sparrow’s world maybe instead of arriving on a ship, they just kind of show up in the forest? Or by the camp and get mistaken for some do the crew mates? 😅 I feel that would make sense but it would also be cooler so have everyone meet Pocahontas first.
However, it would be interesting to get another forestry area or exploring along the rivers would be cool. I think it's been awhile since we had once other than Winnie the Pooh; I know we had Arendelle and Corona but I mean a world that's all vegetation! Such as the Deep Jungle or the Enchanted Domain, those ones were so amazing looking! Plus they looked like larger terrains so I feel like there's more to explore. Although, if we further look into mini-games for this world, I'm not really sure? Especially since the Pocahontas plot is a little more serious than most Disney Princess movies.
🍬 Vanellope : Okay this prompt won't be too long, but this one I feel is just a guess as well? I saw a video on YouTube saying that since Wreck-It-Ralph was a supporting summon in KH3, we might see Game Central Station at some point. And I can agree with it that would be awesome! But for some reason I feel it's kind of a stretch to have Vanellope be a Princess of Heart?? I think?
🐸 Tiana: This one I have to put on here and I can almost guarantee Tiana is going to be in the next KH game! She's one of the last princesses to get a classic 2D movie, so it would be so magical to explore New Orleans and the Bayou! Plus, even though this setting takes place in modern day-ish America, it still has the colorful atmosphere that fits the Kingdom Hearts vibe perfectly! Plus, it would be funny to see the main cast as animals again like in the Lion King. Not necessarily frogs but other woodland or swampy critters!
Now I feel most of this section of the game would be navigation as well since Tiana and her friends have to get through the swamp in the movie. But I feel entering the Mardi-Gras would be pretty fun, maybe even at the end for dancing like in Rapunzel's world! Although, unfortunately that's all I can think of at the moment...

I see people saying that Elsa will be in Fortnite but honestly I disagree, sure, I think there will be something Frozen related as there was on the Epic Games poster they released.
Tumblr media
But they are very much easing intro this and I don't really blame, but look at the characters they chose. Jack Skellington is a scary Halloween time type character, that's going to fit, it's halfway barely even theirs tbh. Out of Pixar, they chose Incredibles, you know, the one (I guess other than Ratatouille?) that has guns.
Tumblr media
That and it's the franchise kept alive by its older audience, let's be honest. There are older Disney fans for all their franchises but the ones that grew up with Incredibles are the ones more or less going to keep that alive, Frozen is almost ten years younger, those kids are still kids and Frozen doesn't have guns.
The Disney Villains, Cruella, Hook, and Maleficent. Villains use guns, it makes sense. Hook is a pirate, pirates have guns, fits in with Jack Sparrow to a degree and explains the Neverland being on the picture. Cruella...I don't really know because her main thing is dogs...I guess just because she adds fashion idk. Maleficent is kind of the usher here because not only is she scary and turn into a dragon but she (and the other two for that matter) have live action counterparts, that's not what the art was displaying but it's just a matter of fact. Live action usually has elements that animated movies aren't known for, hence why Pirates was included.
So yeah, I'm curious how Stitch, Ralph and Monsters are going to fit into it but if I had to guess. Stitch uses a blaster. Ralph is violent and 'wrecks it' and also it would be dumb not to include it since we have Ralph Breaks the Internet's culture. Monsters...I'm torn because Monsters are scary but in the movie, it's like counteractive. It looks like they have other game modes planned since they have the storybook, the Disney+ (which I've talked about already and might be how Toy Story is on that screen because I can't imagine Woody with a gun unless it's the snake in his boot launcher), guessing that's a map builder and World of Disney happens to be a store so I wouldn't be surprised if there was a store in there too. There's already racing so Cars is probably fine, plus I wouldn't be surprised if it was different to have a car with guns vs a human (hey, that's another movie with guns!)
Tumblr media
But Frozen's probably off in the distance for a reason, they probably want to incorporate it in some way but aren't sure what would be appropriate as too many little girls are into it. We'll see how off the rails it gets but I do believe they chose the characters they did for a reason so far (at least to test the waters to see how many complaints they get)

HEARTSTEEL - "PARANOIA"
youtube
Anna S. brings us another League of Legends tie-in...
[5.33]
Katherine St Asaph: Given that each ephemeral member of this hypothetical boy band corresponds to a League of Legends champion, "they're praying for the death of a rockstar" is indeed an accurate description of the gameplay. Somehow that literal meaning makes the song's meaning -- fame can suck, haters are known to hate -- even less compelling. [4]
Anna Katrina Lockwood: To what do we owe the joy of hearing Baekhyun fuckin' SING like this--perhaps his freedom from SM's vocal strictures? His chorus on Heartsteel's "Paranoia" is a gear I don't think he's used before, an effective confidence. The song is totally fun--they've competently executed a gleeful K-pop himbo vibe despite Baekhyun being the only actual K-pop person involved. Riot Games nailed the casting as well, with a great interplay between Baekhyun's anchor chorus and the verses--especially Cal Scruby's lackadaisical drawl on the first, a great foil to Baekhyun's tension. The whole thing gives the effect of barreling precariously around a cartoon racetrack with your bros, which is surely intentional. Anyway, "Paranoia" is basically a [7], but I'm adding a discretionary parasocial point. [8]
Anna Suiter: Aphelios and Yone were robbed, and doesn't Kayn's voice have a little too much editing on it? I think it would've been nice if they had given Ezreal a high note, but I'm glad they gave K'sane the bridge. Hope Riot doesn't keep them in the dungeon for three years like they're doing with K/DA right now! [8]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: At least K/DA had hooks! [2]
Will Adams: Pop stars > rock stars. We've been over this. [4]
Taylor Alatorre: Props to the producers for not simply churning out the MGK/Mod Sun/Yungblud type beat that the "death of a rock star" lyricism was screaming for. They also understand the importance of proportion and negative space in making big sounds sound big and not just cluttered. Even more so than the fictional boy band in Pixar's Turning Red, the cast members of Heartsteel could not possibly cohere as a group in real life, which ironically gives the proceedings an air of whimsy and even relative freedom that belie the song's origins in demographic dial-turning. Baudrillard be praised -- hyperreality still has its uses. [8]
Michael Hong: Not sure anyone here qualifies for "rockstar" status, but sure, go ahead. [3]
Nortey Dowuona: Telling this is a virtual boyband animated properly with actual different members. They think I'll fall for Gorillaz but good because Tobi Lou is in it. They're right. It's a problem. [6]
Ian Mathers: The odd joke I've made over the years notwithstanding, I genuinely haven't encountered much of anything in music that makes me feel like I Don't Understand the Kids These Days. That's true of the actual *music*, at least. The increasingly common move, post-Gorillaz/Studio Killers/etc., of having that music represented by animations does feel like there's a generation gap of some kind there (especially and specifically in the form of video game characters, even more so than the whole VTuber thing). I just can't find anything to get a grasp on, and while I'm not fully a "digital native" (sigh), I say that as someone who's had online personas since I was prepubescent. From the perspective of the artists, I do understand how you might want to avoid the downsides of fame and fandom in our current era; from the bosses' side, I get that increased fungibility and brand loyalty are their own rewards. But even if I liked the song a lot more, even if it was a lot less generic, even if "ft. BAEKHYUN, tobi lou, ØZI, and Cal Scruby" meant something more to me than "this could be a throwaway joke from Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping," I just don't think I could ever be interested in the music-video exploits of a bunch of Fortnite skins. And if that's just one more demarcating line where I'm sitting on the Old side, well, death comes to us all eventually. [5]

Alright, guess I should just write it all down.
I was dreaming in Pixar animation style. There was a teen girl who was styling herself a certain way, and at the moment one of her items got taken away: "Ah! My delayed water reaction!" The shirt she was wearing (which is apparently made of water) had really short sleeves, which started to flow out and lengthen to the length of her arms.
It's more than weird for me to dream in this style—I've never had a dream in this 3D format. Had a few claymation dreams over the last year, except those were already thematically connected to magic so it made sense why I should have them. Trying to explain where some of these things come from isn't always possible, but since we already know the source, it comes down to two main ideas.
First is, pretty apparently, clairvoyance. I've had visions of TV episodes I was about to see, and have visions regularly, pretty much every day for the last year and ~weekly for the last five. It's effectively normal for me to dream of a scene which might not appear in my life for another couple years. And despite some of the content in this dream, it makes sense for this to come from a movie I haven't seen yet.
The second option (which I'm not sure if it makes sense to believe) is also technically clairvoyance, it's just a lot further in time than anyone would understand. It could come from events following an "upgrade" of the world. A complete rewrite of our metaphysics and way of life. Most of the time I dismiss this possibility, since I don't really know of a way it could happen if people don't massively consent to the effect, but depending on how much damage the world might sustain from a magical war, you can kind of see people deciding to trust the magic which can give everyone a new world, and I could see Pixar getting the opportunity.
Maybe this is actually a future you can see. AI art is currently decent for copying styles, and though the spacial reasoning is pretty lacking, over time people will develop and refine the concept of "retheming" a given setting. Applying this to the real world, at scale, already kind of happens from our systematic introduction of new products into the consumer market. From my perspective, it's pretty simple to wrap our planet in a couple hundred different items and use them to fulfill expression of a widely understood idea, literally bringing it to life for the sake of its world. Throw in a couple infinity stones and you can get how easy it is to elicit higher canvas.
Well, I can't do anything with either concept. The film gets made if it is ultimately just a movie for me to see some day, or something more magical happens for reasons we won't predict, since this post doesn't really prove anything. It isn't likely to gain any real traction, if it were, people would just get scared, if they didn't, people would physically reject the idea out of a deeper fear, if anyone consents, people would shun the entire exercise and it doesn't go anywhere until the actual cataclysm, if efforts reconcile, people would have a little reason to study magic and a lot of willingness to remain dependent on others, if dependence waned... The narrative would have to adjust and I'd need to dream/document a new future under this premise.
Expecting a difference doesn't work if you're afraid to speak.

I have a few random thoughts and such. Some of such are just little things that I've found myself thinking about due to one thing or another. Others are more about writing, because just today I have rekindled the warmth I have about my one fic AU. I'll start with the random thoughts that have been hanging around my mind.
One of those things being that the movie Grown Ups 2 was mentioned in something that I was watching (some YouTube video of some kind). I had almost forgotten about the movie and at the point couldn't tell you much about the plot, except at some point the characters go to a waterpark with big slides and everything and there's just this rather quick gag that they use. There's this really big buff guy who has a really high almost squeaky voice when he talks, but that's not the part of the gag that sticks with me. No what sticks with me is the line this guy says... "I'm from Saskatchatoon." Which as you well know isn't a real place, since it's just mashing up Saskatchewan and Saskatoon. So bit of an eye roll there, as much as it IS funny. But that's forever what Grown Ups 2 is to me. It all boils down to that one singular line, which is just a one off gag.
Another thing that has been on my mind due to news articles is that the 5 zebras the were confiscated here in Saskatchewan are doing well, even the two that ended up being sent to Moncton because the pair of them (Koffee and Leeloo) are now a bonded pair and of the two males who were at my local zoo had become territorial and unsafe around each other. So my zoo now has 3 zebras (1 male, 2 female who I don't remember the names of), while Moncton has the two who were causing the turf war.
Another local zoo story is from quite a few years ago now. But we had this one snake which I think was a boa constrictor, but I can't quite remember because I'm sure that this was over 5 years ago now, but anyways, this was a really big snake who's name was Tickles and was probably 17 years old or something like that. Anyways he was kind of a staple at the zoo. When classes came to the zoo Tickles was a snake that you got the chance to pet. I had pet him when I was in grade 1, I believe both my brothers had the chance to pet him. So many kids (and adults knew of this snake) if they hadn't pet Tickles themselves. So to hear one day on the news that this snake was stolen was heartbreaking, and a little confusing because how do you steal a large snake? Thankfully, if I'm remembering correctly, the snake was eventually returned healthy. Much to many people's happiness.
I had another non fic thought at one point... Oh yes! I remember now! It was sewing related! I finally finished my aunt's dress that I was working on. It's finished and I no longer have to stress about it. Which I'm extremely happy able. Both my mock up and the dress for the wedding my aunt's going to turned out extremely well and fit her rather good, if I do say so myself. Of course, in the end I never took pictures of how they turned out. But my aunt likes them, so that's what counts. It means that I can finally alter my two new dresses, though I'll probably stick with just the one currently. (The one that's currently unwearable.)
In that same kind of note, I do enjoy seeing people get excited about the sewing machines that I show them at work. Particularly the embroidery machines, because they really are fun machines. Especially for creative people. I thought I might have more for this one, but I don't currently. I think I tapped myself out on that earlier in the day.
Now onto the fic thoughts, but I'll add those under the cut. I have a feeling that once I start writing it's either going to end up much shorter than I originally thought, or it will be as long as I thought it was going to be or longer, because I'll add some of the necessary background info. (You've hung around my blog long enough that you can probably guess which fandom this fic is for. )
(If you guessed Pixar's Cars, you'd be right.)
So just today I have found myself thinking about and enjoying the concept of the one arc in my Extended Connections Cars fic. (Named such for connecting characters closer together than they are in canon.) The reason why I like this one arc so much is because it's sort of taking the fandom favourite thing of making Lightning McQueen Doc Hudson's son and turning that on it's head slightly. Instead of being unrelated or being Doc's biological son, he's Doc's (by marriage) nephew and later essentially adopted son. This is also a fun AU because it actually starts out as a "What if Doc was found to be alive in Radiator Springs long before Lightning wound up there." It does make heavy use of the original characters that my friend made up and uses in her own stories, which she gracefully lets me borrow and play with. (As she's interested in seeing some of the AUs that we've created together shared.)
Part of this story is inspired by a dream that I had, that took it in a much different direction than I was originally going to go. As originally Lightning's part would have fit more with canon than what it's become. It would have been less dramatic in many ways, with there being this niggling that there's something familiar about this rookie. Only to later find out after Lightning wrecks the road and learns his lesson that the niggling is right and he is the son of Doc's brother-in-law.
Whereas the version it is now is Doc's brother-in-law trying to arrest Lightning, knowing full well that Lightning is his son, and it's that fact that he's trying to cover up from this 16-17 year old kid who was just at a hotel with a friend so that they could go watch a race for Lightning's birthday.
Does anyone want to do a little mini-infodumping about something they’re fascinated with/is joy-giving to them/just want to spill about? It can be short, it can be long. I need things to think about so my mind doesn’t go in unhelpful directions, and hearing from people who are passionate about something is so wonderful.

Disney Movies
A/N: I don’t have a good explanation for this. I truly don’t. Forgive me, it’s 3 am and I wrote this in a single day and I know I have soulmates and a few other requests and fics to tend to. I’m too inconstant. I’m a big kid, what can you do?
Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad
The Lion King! I’m sure Simba’s history and the talk about “who you are” would touch Altaïr’s apparently “cold and stoic” heart — but you know him well enough to tell apart the truth and what he tells others. He knows most of quotes and secretly memorized “The Circle of Life” accidentally, even though you could swear his favorite song was “Just Can’t Wait to Be King” — you found out when you woke up one morning and Altaïr was in the kitchen, brewing coffee and humming the song while he watched the steam rise up with a distant look. The movie has kinda turned into a comfort animation he turns to every once in a while just to keep the memory of the feeling he had when Simba climbed the rock and roared to claim his place as the king.
Ezio Auditore
Aladdin! What movie would be better fitting for Ezio than the history of a underdog who charms an upperclass girl — in this case, a princess — and they both fall in love? He has lots of feelings towards that movie, especially when it comes to the “hidden messages” in it about humility, love and friendship. The fact that Aladdin was his favorite Disney animation was never a secret, since he told you about that with a sheepish smile in one of your first dates and sang the chorus of “A Whole New World” just to prove a point. Ezio generally turns to that movie in cold and rainy days, when he can cuddle you and watch it together and play-sing his favorite song together.
Connor | Ratonhnhaké:ton
Brother Bear! Have you guys expected anything else? When he was younger, Connor decided that this was his favorite movie because he used to love bears — but came to adore it even more after he got old enough to understand how truly beautiful the movie is. As he matured, he could read through the lines and understand more about friendship, what it means to be family and love. Connor won’t admit it, but he can’t listen to “No Way Out” without feeling bad. It’s a movie that has a deep emotional connection to him, considering he lost his mother when still young, so when you are watching it together and it comes to the bit where Kenai tells the truth about Koda’s mother… You will see Connor flustered and tearing up because it’s too much.
Haytham Kenway
The Aristocats! Haytham is, clearly, a cat person. The narrative, despite being simple and “silly” in a certain way, was his first and favorite movie when he was a kid, so he holds it in a high regard. It took him some time to actually work it out and come to tell you which was his favorite movie and why. After some insistence he told you it was Aristocats because he “likes cats” — he’s a simple man, truly. Haytham will never come around to admit it, but he still knows some parts of the lyrics to “Everybody Wants to be a Cat” and if you stay for long enough around Edward, he’ll tell you about how flustered Haytham became when the butler tried to get rid of Duchess and her kitties. That’s when Haytham decided he’d never be taking you to any Kenway family dinners ever again.
Edward Kenway
Treasure Planet! Of course it would be treasure planet. Imagine how marveled Edward would be at the chance to sail into the space in a ship. He can relate in a certain way to the young Jim, with everyone trying to tell him what to do and how he should behave — ever since a young age, Edward knew he was having none of that. The sense of adventure he shares with the character when they’re looking for the spaceship, the eager gasp and look he gave the TV when the map opened up to lead the way to the treasure and, more importantly, when Jim solved the puzzle to where the treasure was hidden. When Edward matured, he could see the movie was more about camaraderie, long lasting friendships and a spark of a thing he couldn’t quite pin down; but he never let go of that movie.
Arno Dorian
The Beauty and The Beast! The story of a beautiful and king girl who ends up falling in love with a monster? Sign Arno the fuck up. Let’s not forget that the movie is also an old French tale, so Arno has been familiar with it his whole life. For him, it’s the way that Belle ends up understanding the Beast, seeing how he can be good despite frightening and the ill-tempered behavior. Arno has a romantic soul, so nothing better than a movie about the power of love, lessons about humility and kindness and, above all, a beautiful ending where the main characters stay together. Arno actually knows how to sing the main song, although he does it in French. If you want to see Arno melt and blush, just kiss his face during the ball scene between Belle and the prince. He has a soft spot for love stories.
Evie Frye
Mulan! Evie simply adores Mulan. It has been her favorite movie since forever, always competing with Jacob about what they’d watch — of course, she’d always pick the movies first. Even from a young age, Evie could understand the lessons about determination and courage that the movie passed, which is why she chose Mulan to be the movie she would love forever. There isn’t a particular song that Evie loves about the movie, but the bit that gets to her is when Mulan saves the Chinese Emperor. That’s when she decided that no one could tell her what or what not to do. After all, if Mulan could save an Empire, she could very well do the same or more.
Jacob Frye
Peter Pan! London? Flying away to a distant land with fairies and other kids who fight against pirates and never grow up? Please. Peter Pan was made for Jacob. He’d wait all day and even endure the silly movies Evie would put him through — he watched Mulan so many times that “Make a Man Out of You” was engraved into his brain. Since Evie was always around and a unending source of comfort when their father was away, he came to understand Wendy’s position about her siblings quite early — he would never forgive their father if he forced Evie and him to share separated rooms when younger, although his position changed with time. Jacob loved Peter Pan so much he longed for the day when his chance would appear, often leaving the bedroom window open, even during winter. You probably would come to find out this was Jacob’s favorite movie when Evie teased him about that and he blushed deeply at her, eyes widening and, believe it or not, words dying in his throat.
Desmond Miles
Hercules! Thinking about it, Hercules and Desmond share quite a lot of things — starting with: none of them actually asked for this. Ever since early, Desmond came to adore Hercules — he even managed to convince William to buy him a Pegasus plush at some point, a memory he left behind in his bedroom, much to his regret. With no reason at all, his favorite song ever was “I Won’t Say I’m in Love”, even though he can never remember the whole lyrics but the chorus. Desmond has probably asked you to watch Hercules more than a few times, just he could show how exactly how deeply he knew the quotes of the movie. In a very young age, Desmond came to understand about honor, nobility and the importance of choosing your own way, which eventually led him to bolt.

Each member of the choirs favourite movie and why
hi thank you for this ask lovely!!!!
i know that some of them were mentioned in the text, so i'll be giving them an extra one. also i personally watch and know of more lighthearted stuff, so that's why they might sorta skew that way :)
mischa: obligatory "saw v" (saw vi) mention, but beyond he also likes zombieland and shaun of the dead. i see him really enjoying action horror comedies that have some heart behind them. has everything.
constance: she loves non-traditional animation and designs, the creativity that flows through that and the honesty behind that storytelling that isn't really the same in a disney movie (sure, she loves disney and pixar, but they aren't her top tier). she says "she's a lyrics person, not a melody person", so i imagine her preferring expression through beautiful visuals over story. think the vincent van gogh movie made through oil paintings, the book of life, coraline. coraline is the total package for her. while terrifying for her, it grounds her in that sure, she can get angry at her family, but she is so so lucky that they aren't spiders that want to eat her.
noel: a silent movie bitch, as we know from canon, who loves lola (1961). but if the choir forces him to go with something in english, he opts for ratatouille (i'm really sad i can't use this as a virgil joke btw). the core message of "anyone can cook" is so inspiring to him. of course, he adapts it to "anyone can be that fucked up girl". he can exist in that dingy world, he can make his way there and pick up men in alleyways behind the restaurant. the french setting and the distance between child and parent resonate with him (sure, his mother loves him, but he never feels understood by her).
ocean: my mind simply manifested the black cauldron. mischa's adoptive parents had a bunch of old disney vhs tapes (bc they were expecting someone 15 years younger), and she watched all of them. eilonwy is a decisive and knowledgable character ocean can project onto, and when she wants (or is forced) to unwind, high fantasy is a great genre for that which doesn't remind her of all the stuff she has to do. she does hate the kissing part, but finds comfort in the fact that eilonwy can find another princess to fall in love with later on down the track.
ricky: definitely a star trek fan, leading to heated discussions with noel about star wars vs star trek over google docs. but their favourite of all time? the rocky horror picture show. it's chaotic and sexy and scifi and this messy combination of genres that they absolutely fall in love with. i think that they do love music and musicals, and the horror comedy aspect just enhances it for them and every time they watch it, they feel like they're levelling up. that being said, 9/10 not enough cats.
penny/jane: i really want to channel menace!penny and say sausage party, but i do have the slighest amount of dignity remaining. she seems like a monty python and the holy grail fan, going back to the classics for her comedy and one that's decently unhinged. she likes some newer stuff, naturally, but i think a lot of other things can't give her the balance of making her cry with laughter while not trying too hard.
again, thank you for the ask, i had a blast considering this!!!

Worth noting that we're almost two weeks into 2024, and there are still two undetermined films on this year's Disney slate...
One of them is just simply "Untitled Disney", and it's set for release September 8, 2024...
The other is the annual Thanksgiving Walt Disney Animation Studios offering.
According to some screenshot of a supposed Disney movie/series slate that was floating around a month ago, Disney took both of these movies off the calendar... But I concluded, for multiple reasons, that that screenshot was fake. As it did not resemble the kind of PDF document that Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures usually puts out when there's a change in the release schedule. The formatting was all different, and it included Disney+ shows, which these things never do.
So, I rule that the 9/6/2024 release - whatever it may be - and the 11/27/2024 WDAS movie are still on the boards. At the moment... Of course, that's always subject to change!
Disney would've kicked this year off with the Pixar space adventure ELIO in March, but that got pushed all the way back to the summer of 2025... The year instead begins with theatrical releases of the three Pixar films that went straight to Disney+ on their initial release... So the year actually begins, in terms of a NEW theatrically-released movie, with a 20th Century Studios release: Horror reboot THE FIRST OMEN. April 5th.
And earlier today, they moved their new PLANET OF THE APES movie up two weeks, to avoid duking it out with FURIOSA and GARFIELD. Plus they can get all the large-format screens to themselves for a lil' bit.
Anyways, we're in 2024 now... And we know nothing about these two movies. I'm guessing 9/6/2024 is going to be another 20th Century Studios movie, or a Searchlight movie. Sometimes "Untitled Disney" is a placeholder for that kind of movie, and September's usually the time to release one of those kinds of lower budget, more adult-oriented movies.
But we know what's been happening with WDAS' latest pictures at the box office, and who knows what morale is like over there. They too are developing shows for Disney+, like Pixar was, until Iger recently mandated cuts to Pixar after Disney+ continued to lose money for the larger company... I'd imagine WDAS might be in a similar predicament? Maybe not? But it's unusual that we don't know for sure - as in, not through leaks or word thru the trenches - what the 2024 WDAS movie is. Even STRANGE WORLD, we knew about it a year away from release... They're kinda cutting it close with this one?
Unless WDAS takes 2024 off completely, for whatever reason. I figured the very possible animation strike would affect this movie anyways. But even without a strike, their recent woes might lead to a back-to-the-drawing-board moment, as often is the case when a studio has a string of money-losers. It often leads to a week or so of everyone wondering, "What should we be doing? What kinds of movies should we be making??" And then they try that, and they see how that goes...
Anyways, should all go swimmingly, I wouldn't mind seeing the new WDAS get delayed. Especially if it's still having its kinks ironed out. Also, kind of a wild opinion, but WDAS doesn't always have to do the Thanksgiving thing, ya know? STRANGE WORLD and WISH weren't saved by that slot, neither was something like TREASURE PLANET many moons ago. WDAS did do a March release with ZOOTOPIA in 2016, and almost did that again in 2018 (at one point GIGANTIC, at another point RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET) before abandoning it... Like, a WDAS movie doesn't always have to be the summer or the holiday season. Many other animated movies have proven that, too.
Heck, WDAS movies used to show up at the randomest times of the year. Before the world of blockbuster filmmaking, during a time when the movie theater industry was a whoooole lot different.
Did you know that SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS, which had its world premiere on December 21, 1937, went into general release... In February of 1938? February. Yes, cold-ass February... And still managed to become, at the time of its release, the highest-grossing film of all time? (A record swiftly usurped by GONE WITH THE WIND a little over a year later.)
PINOCCHIO, CINDERELLA, and PETER PAN were February releases, too. DUMBO and THE JUNGLE BOOK came out near Halloween in their respective release years. BAMBI was a late August release. SLEEPING BEAUTY and 101 DALMATIANS came out in late January of their release years.
Summer slots became more of a regular thing for Disney starting with THE RESCUERS in 1977, which was a June release. THE FOX AND THE HOUND originally was eying Christmas 1980, but because of the Don Bluth-led animator exodus, ended up being a July 1981 release. THE BLACK CAULDRON, similarly, was out in July 1985. THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE? July 1986.
But then once the Renaissance fired up, it was initially all about Thanksgiving. OLIVER & COMPANY, LITTLE MERMAID, RESCUERS DOWN UNDER, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, and ALADDIN all did the holiday thing...
When THE LION KING broke all records for an animated movie in summer 1994 - the June date given to it after production problems delayed it from its original Thanksgiving 1993 slot, then Disney was all about the summer again. Barring WINNIE THE POOH (2011), the last time WDAS had a summer movie was... 2002... LILO & STITCH. From BOLT-onwards, it was almost always towards the end of the year with their movies. Again, ZOOTOPIA an exception, RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON as well because of COVID-19 (it would've been Thanksgiving 2020 if nothing had happened).
Maybe it doesn't have to be Thanksgiving/Christmas all the time?
Suppose we see the new WDAS movie in, say, March 2025? And the next, maybe at another time of the year?

Does anyone else here get intense platonic crushes on people of all genders? It seems to be all about the personality for me.
I'm in my 30s, and there've been a handful of people in my life where I basically thought they were the Best Person Ever (tm) and I wanted to be around them all the time, be their friend, be their VERY BEST FRIEND. Maybe I wished for a qpr, I'm not even sure. Imagine the dog from Pixar's UP. That's basically me around the people I've had crushes on. I always knew I didn't want sex but romance up to a point? When I was younger I never considered them crushes (because I thought this was normal "best friend pining" or something).
I had this one friend throughout high school who was just so much BETTER than the rest. Nothing could touch her. I was jealous of her sister all the time because the two were really close (way closer than I ever was with her) and I wanted that closeness. Tbh I still pine for her a little now and then. There's a place in my heart that's hers forever I think. It hurts to think that, to her, I'm probably just one of several old high school friends. One of many.
Later there was a guy in college. That crush had a bit of a disaster ending, because he dropped out of the one class I shared with him and I was DESPERATE to see him again. We had been sitting next to each other before he dropped out and the banter we shared every time before class started (or during) was basically what got me out of bed in the morning. Again, imagine the dog from Up. So. I turned up at his house (didn't have his number, but I knew his address bc he lived really close to campus). Yes, slightly creepy, but that never occurred to me at the time. Quite understandably (in hindsight) he thought I was mainly desperately horny and wanted to hook up. He made it clear we could fuck if I wanted but then I should leave, please. It really crushed my heart. All I wanted was to play footsie, cook together, hang out, cuddle, laugh, share a bottle of wine until 3am and so on. But still to be the most important person for him.
Right now it's a girl from my company who works at another branch and I've only met her in person like twice. In 4 years. But sometimes I have online meetings with her and she's just so cool. So great. Best person! And she probably thinks I'm really, really weird, because I've tried to drag out friendly small talk as long as possible on a number of occasions now. Asking her all sorts of things about her life, her dog, her hobbies. She might dread one-on-one meetings with me now. God, why am I like this. /o\
And why can't I just platonically fall for a person for once, who is even remotely as into me as I am into them? I'm not into sex, but I'm not repulsed either. So, if "amazing work girl" ever asked me out (wayyy hypothetically speaking here) I'd do a lot of things if they would make her happy, as long as she also wanted a relationship, not just sex. And I would be happy because she was.
Sigh. I'm aware allos face similar problems when their love is unrequited, but. I still feel rather down. Like I said, there've only been a handfull of these crushes my whole life. And a couple of them lasted years. And what I want vs. what they were into never seemed to even exist on the same planet.
Thank you for coming to my sad Ted Talk.

Note
There was already a question about Marvel, but what about Disney? Specifically, which Disney movie is perfect for Sides? (in terms of plot / moral lesson of the film)
Oooh, that sounds fun... aaaand very difficult.  It's not so easy to find a Disney movie specific for every Side, with a moral/plot that can work for each of them, but I will try my best.
Also, I will cheat here and include the Pixar movies as well. Not only because some of them have wonderful plots/morals, but also because in some cases, they're better than the Disney movies. Especially the most recent ones.
Since I will have to explain why I chose those movies in particular, I will also talk about some plot related things and/or the ending. I will try to keep my explanations as vague as possible, but there could be spoilers. So please go watch these movies first, then come back here.

Roman - Beauty and the Beast
This is a movie Roman desperately needs. The message is simple and powerful: don't judge a book by its cover. See past what it appears. What looked like a terrible beast might be a loving creature, ready to die for you. What looked like a brave, beautiful hero might be the most terrible being.
This is something Roman needs to understand, because it's way more powerful than just "what seemed bad is actually good". He needs to see the other way around and to understand that appearances are not what makes a person good or bad, but their behaviour.
And, speaking of behaviour, the Beast teaches another great message, which is the importance of effort. Belle didn't give a damn about him, until he made a conscious effort to improve himself: he saved her from wolves, he tried to be more polite and to act more like a human being, rather than a beast. Only then, Belle decided to meet him halfway and slowly fell in love.
The moral? You can't have nothing, if you don't improve yourself a little bit. You can't rely only on appearances. Go past that, become a better person and you will find happiness.
And let's not forget that this is a romance story. Roman is the Side responsible for romance, so what better way to teach him those lessons, if not with a great romance?
Because yes, I can already hear you talking about Stockholm syndrome, so please let me have two words about it:
1) Please, do not apply the logic of real life or stories to fairy tales. In fairy tales people can fall in love in two days, because that's how a fairy tale works. They're metaphorical stories, not stories based on real life.
2) Belle and the Beast spent a lot of time together. And, during all this time, the Beast always improved himself. He didn't gaslight Belle, he didn't force her to do anything. He didn't even try to court her, because he didn't feel good enough for her.
3) Belle wanted to stay in the Beast's castle, not because of Stockholm syndrome, but because they had an agreement. She would stay in the castle, if the Beast let her father go away. When Belle found out his rose and the Beast went crazy, she had no problem running away as fast as she could: between an agreement and risking her life, no matter what agreement they had, she didn’t think twice, before running away.

Remus - Alice in Wonderland
There are two main reasons why I chose this movie for Remus and I'm sure you can already guess them:
A) The imagery. This movie (and the book) are full of insane, weird, nonsensical, funny, crazy images and characters. There are liquids that shrink you, rabbits with pocket watches, Queens of Hearts and magical cats. There's everything and it's a funny, absurd adventure. Perfect for the Side who has such wild, unleashed creativity.
2) The interpretations. This story has a ton of possible interpretations: it can be about Carroll, it can be about drugs, it can be about childhood, it can be about adulthood. All characters have a meaning - even more than one, depending on the interpretation you want to give to the whole story.
But even if we just stick to the general themes, they are very good: follow your dreams and your curiosity, build your own identity and, most importantly, enjoy life. Nothing is straightforward, nothing makes sense. Life is chaotic and funny, so why not having fun as well? It kinda reminds me of the chorus of Fuck It! by Days N’ Daze (one of the songs from Remus' playlist):
'Cause life's a game, life's a joke, fuck it, why not go for broke? Trade in all your chips and learn how to be free Why abstain? Why jump in line? We're all living on borrowed time So do what you like, and we'll like what you do when you do it And if they don't, that's fine, fuck 'em
Alice in Wonderland has the same message: life is an adventure, so just have fun! We're all crazy people, we all have our little quirks, so we shouldn't care too much about what others think.

Janus - The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Finding a movie for this man has been very difficult. Where could I find a movie that says "fuck society", but also "don't trust appearances" and also "lies" and also "changes" and also - okay, you got it.
Then I thought about this one. And wow, this one has everything Janus likes.
* The “fuck society” and “fuck prejudices” theme: you can clearly see how many prejudices all characters have - Quasimodo included! Gypsies are considered just thieves and bad people, Quasimodo is a hideous monster, Esmeralda is a tempting witch, Judge Frollo is a righteous man.
And even though you can see that these prejudices are all wrong, you can also understand why they exist: Quasimodo is physically hideous, but he has the most beautiful heart and the kindest soul. Esmeralda is very beautiful, but she doesn’t use her beauty with malicious intents.
And Frollo... Frollo is just the best villain Disney ever made. He’s a colossal son of a bitch, torn inside between lust and his desire to be righteous and do God’s job. He’s a miserable, pathetic human being and, at the same time, a merciless bastard, who is ready to kill and destroy with the excuse of “it’s God’s will”.
* The acceptance theme: All Quasimodo wanted was to be free. To leave his prison and spend his time with other people, even if just for one day. If it reminds you of a certain group of Sides, it’s because the concept is very similar.
Quasimodo can’t change his appearance: he is and will always be ugly. And there’s nothing wrong with it. Ugly things and ugly people will always exist. The important thing is to accept them and not to outcast them, because they’re different. Just like Quasimodo has the gentlest, most beautiful soul, so the other Sides who are locked away in Thomas’ mind might be the kindest and the ones who care the most.
* Religion: Notre Dame is the main location and it's a protagonist, in its way. So of course religion would play a role in this movie.
And I love how it's shown, because it's not purely good and not purely bad. Religion is seen as something that offers protection, an implacable judge that knows all of your sins, an excuse to justify an attempted genocide. The church helps Esmeralda and it's Quasimodo's prison. It's present and in the background. There's no glorification, nor demonization. It's great and considering Janus' connections with religion, this is another great point for this movie.
* The dark themes: this movie dared more than any other of the franchise and this is also why it’s still so loved. We have everything here and oh boy, these themes are dark: infanticide, lust, genocide, religion, racism, prejudices. We might even add psychology to the list, if we believe in the theory that the gargoyles are a figment of Quasimodo's imagination! They might not be perfect for a kid, but for an adult? Or a very mature Side like Janus? Perfect.

Virgil - Luca
After the three Disney movies, here comes the three Pixar's!
And yes, I know, Luca may seem a weird choice. But just think about it: What is Luca about? Sure, it's an adventure and it's a story about accepting what is different from you (the evergreen "don't judge a book by its cover").
But Luca is also a story about not thinking too much. Luca is a huge worrier: he's scared of leaving the water, he's scared of visiting the village, he's scared of revealing his identity. And yes, sure, sometimes listening to that tiny voice that says "be careful" is important, but it's also important to recognize when it should be listened to. Running with a bike down a huge descent is something you should worry about. Visiting a new place isn't something you should be scared of.
Changes can be good but if you keep worrying about anything, you will never have any new experiences, learn new things or have new friends. Luca was mostly alone at the beginning: at the end not only he has one family, but two and he's travelling to meet new people and have more friends.
In addition to that, Luca isn't a huge, dramatic story: it's pure and simple, it flows without drama and you can relax for some time while following a nice, cute story in a beautiful setting.
So not only this movie teaches Virgil how change can be good and to not worry too much, but it also soothes his own anxiety. What better choice for him? :D

Patton - Inside Out
I love this movie and the reasons why I associated it with Patton are quite obvious.
First of all, it's a movie about emotions and Patton is the embodiment of "most of Thomas' feelings". He knows about emotions, he deals with them on a daily basis and he's not always good with them.
This movie teaches him what the consequences might be, if emotions are not balanced. What happened to Riley was the consequence of an imbalance: she forced herself to be happy all the time and to pretend everything was fine, when it was not. Never once Riley released her sadness and that led her to become numb to emotions.
And sadness is the other reason why this movie is so great for Patton. Every child should learn the importance of sadness, especially while growing up. This isn't an easy process, there are a lot of tensions, of changes, of bad moments. Bottling your feelings up and pretending to be fine isn't the best way to face them. Just like in Riley's case, sadness can be a relief, an outlet that releases all tensions. Why do you always feel a little better, after a good cry? Because you released some tensions.
Patton knows that, in theory. But he needs to see it. To see what happens when you become numb and what happens, when you finally cry. He needs to see how sadness shouldn't be pushed down, but accepted and, sometimes, even welcomed.
And, considering how he literally made Riley's same mistake for a very long time (pretending to be happy when he's not), this movie offers him a good moral - and a great reminder of how good it is to actually be sad, once in a while.

Logan - Soul
Logan needs this movie. Everyone needs it.
The message is something we rarely see: we are always focused on having a purpose, on reaching that goal that will forever change our life. Once we will do this or that, then we will start to live life to the fullest. Everything done before will be just anticipation for that big moment.
But life isn’t our purpose. Having a “spark”, a passion, a purpose is wonderful and it adds more to life - but it’s not what life is about.
Why is Soul’s "epiphany" scene so powerful? Because it wonderfully encapsulated that fleeting moment, in which we can feel the beauty of life. It's just a moment, it's different for everyone and it's impossible to put it into words. But we all feel it. And, when we do it, we can see life for what it is: not one single goal to reach, but something made of hundreds of beautiful moments, of sunsets, of the people we love, of memories, of that food we like, of a warm touch, of rain on the skin and so on, hundreds and thousands of different things that make life what it is.
That’s why I want Logan to see this movie. Because Logan is too focused on the purpose: Thomas should do this and that to reach his goal, every little thing should be a step to that single idea and everything else is just a distraction.
Soul teaches us that, by doing this, we might lose a lot of wonderful moments and never truly experience life. If we spend our lives being like “when I will do X, then I will start to live”, we might end up wasting our entire lives, without realizing how many beautiful things we’ve just missed.
I want Logan to realize it. I want Logan to understand that life isn’t just purpose, but also moments to experience, to feel, to share. Moments that might not seem useful for the big purpose of Thomas’ life, but that are part of his life and what makes Thomas’ life worth living.
And, once realizing it, even the most logical Side might take a break from plans and schemes, to just sit and enjoy the pure wonder of being alive.

Tolkien Tag 2022
Tumblr media
I'm here yet another year for a new wonderful Tolkien Blog Party at The Edge of the Precipice. It is the tenth anniversary of this blog event, which promises to be magnificent and isn't disappointing so far so here I am giving my answers to the tag questions once again. This year they are taken from questions of previous years.
1. Who first introduced you to Middle Earth?
Well, it was technically a substitute teacher I had in eighth grade who, at the suggestion of a couple of classmates chose The Hobbit as our reading for our first term ten years ago, partly because the first film in The Hobbit trilogy, An Unexpected Journey, was going to be released shortly. This was what got me to read The Hobbit for the first time, I remember I enjoyed it a lot (and was surprised to see Gollum was in it too, I used to think he only appeared in The Lord of the Rings though I had briefly seen him in a trailer for An Unexpected Journey earlier that very summer when I went to watch Pixar's Brave to theaters) but it didn't really get me into Middle-earth in a strong way. I liked it, did well in the exam and that was all. So I guess the ones who really got me into Middle-earth were my brother and my sister's boyfriend. I first watched An Unexpected Journey at the latter's house with my sister and some of their friends, it was an amazing experience I will never forget. Shortly afterwards, I watched the rest of The Hobbit trilogy and The Lord of the Rings trilogy with my brother, I absolutely loved the movies and my obsession with Middle-earth began.
2. Has your love of Middle-earth affected your life?
Very much so. For one, it has me participating in this blog party and celebrating Tolkien every year, which is an absolute delight. Pretty much everyone who knows me knows I love Tolkien and his works and since most of them don't know anyone else who loves it this much, I have sort of become an authority when it comes to him even though I'm not an expert by any means. My end of degree project for my English Studies degree was about The Hobbit, particularly about how much it has in common with the Bildungsroman. I knew from the beginning I wanted my project to be about one of Tolkien's works. I would've preferred The Lord of the Rings but it was harder to make it about the Bildungsroman if I chose it as the pattern is less evident than in The Hobbit and I couldn't choose another aspect of the novel to analyze that would fit the scope of the project. Not sure this counts too but my love for Middle-earth has also got me to get some related merch, I have a Sting keychain given to me by my siblings as a gift I'm very proud of. It might have affected my life in more ways but these are the ones I can think of now. I wish I had the time to reread The Lord of the Rings and rewatch the films every year as some fans do.
3. Have you ever dressed up like a Tolkien character?
No but I've wanted to dress like a hobbit lady for about as long as I've been part of the fandom. Now I think maybe an elven cosplay would suit me a bit better since my siblings say I look more like an elf (though I love hobbits better). A Galadriel cosplay would be amazing. ♥
4. What people in your real life would you want in your company if you had to take the ring to Mordor?
I remember this question from earlier. Definitely my siblings (what would I do without them?), my cousins and my best online friends.
5. What Middle-earth location would you most like to visit?
This one looks familiar too. The Shire!!! I've wanted to visit it ever since I first laid eyes on it! It's just so gorgeous. 😍 I love other locations well enough too (like Rivendell) but nothing beats the beautiful Shire for me.
6. Are there any secondary characters you think deserve more attention?
Lord Celeborn please! I have always found him to be a great character but he won't get any attention at all. I mean, he is Galadriel's husband for a reason and I wish we got to see more of their relationship and his personality. Éomer's wife, Lothíriel of Dol Amroth, comes to mind too, I wish we got to know more about her. Oh and I can't forget my darlings Estella Bolger and Diamond of Long Cleeve. And Pippin's sisters! I want to know what each of them are like. And Sam's children! We only really know a tiny bit about Elanor and that's all. It makes sense since she's the eldest and their lives and personalities are not important to the plot but still!
7. Would you rather attend Faramir's wedding or Samwise's wedding?
Both really, but if I have to choose, I'd rather attend Samwise's! I love hobbit weddings, they suit my style the most.
8. How many books by J.R.R. Tolkien have you read?
The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion and The Father Christmas Letters. Looking forward to adding more to the list.
9. Are there any books about Middle-earth or Professor Tolkien (but not written by him) that you recommend?
The Complete Guide to Middle-earth by Robert Foster is amazing. I didn't read it in full but it's a very complete and useful glossary of Middle-earth terms. I haven't read this one but it looks promising: Tolkien's Ordinary Virtues: Exploring the Spiritual Themes of the Lord of the Rings by Mark Eddy Smith.
Oh and I used Bilbo's Journey: Discovering the Hidden Meaning in The Hobbit by Joseph Pierce as reference for my project though I didn't read all of it. I'm looking forward to it as well as to reading his companion book about The Lord of the Rings: Frodo's Journey: Discover the Hidden Meaning of The Lord of the Rings.
10. List up to ten of your favorite lines/quotations from the Middle-earth books and/or movies.
I have quoted it before in my answers to these questions but here's my favorite quote from the movies and one of the main reasons why I could never hate The Hobbit trilogy as some fans do:
“Mithrandir, why the halfling?”
“I don’t know. Saruman believes that it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I found. I found that it is the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keeps the darkness at bay… Small acts of kindness and love. Why Bilbo Baggins? Perhaps it is because I am afraid and he gives me courage”.
Other favorites from The Hobbit trilogy include:
"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit, not a nasty dirty wet hole full of worms and oozy smells. This was a hobbit hole and that means good food, a warm hearth and all the comforts of home".
"He doesn’t approve of being late. Not that I ever was, in those days I was always on time, I was entirely respectable and nothing unexpected ever happened".
My favorites from The Lord of the Rings trilogy:
"I wonder if we’ll ever be put into songs or tales. What? I wonder if people’ll ever say “Let’s hear about Frodo and the Ring”, and they’ll say, “Yes, it’s one of my favourite stories. Frodo was really courageous, wasn’t he, dad?” “Yes, my boy, the most famousest of hobbits and that’s saying a lot“. You left out one of the chief characters, Samwise the Brave, I want to hear more about Sam. Frodo wouldn’t have got far without Sam. Now, Mr. Frodo, you shouldn’t make fun, I was being serious. So was I. Samwise the Brave".
"It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered, full of darkness and danger they were and sometimes you didn’t want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow, even darkness must pass. A new day will come and when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those are the stories that stayed with you, that meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand, I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going because they were holding on to something. What are we holding on to, Sam? That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo and it’s worth fighting for”.
"Courage, Merry. Courage for our friends".
"Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West!"
From The Hobbit:
"There is nothing like looking, if you want to find something (or so Thorin said to the young dwarves). You certainly usually find something, if you look, but it is not always quite the something you were after".
"There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. But sad or merry, I must leave it now. Farewell!"
From The Lord of the Rings:
"Then Bilbo woke up and opened his eyes. ‘Hullo, Frodo!’ he said. ‘Well, I have passed the Old Took today! So that’s settled. And now I think I am quite ready to go on another journey. Are you coming?’
‘Yes, I am coming,’ said Frodo. ‘The Ring-bearers should go together.’
‘Where are you going, Master?’ cried Sam, though at last he understood what was happening.
‘To the Havens, Sam,’ said Frodo.
‘And I can’t come.’
‘No, Sam. Not yet anyway, not further than the Havens. Though you too were a Ring-bearer, if only for a little while.
Your time may come. Do not be too sad, Sam. You cannot be always torn in two. You will have to be one and whole, for many years. You have so much to enjoy and to be, and to do.’
‘But,’ said Sam, and tears started in his eyes, ‘I thought you were going to enjoy the Shire, too, for years and years, after all you have done.’
‘So I thought too, once. But I have been too deeply hurt, Sam. I tried to save the Shire, and it has been saved, but not for me. It must often be so, Sam, when things are in danger: some one has to give them up, lose them, so that others may keep them. But you are my heir: all that I had and might have had I leave to you. And also you have Rose, and Elanor; and Frodo-lad will come, and Rosie-lass, and Merry, and Goldilocks, and Pippin; and perhaps more that I cannot see. Your hands and your wits will be needed everywhere. You will be the Mayor, of course, as long as you want to be, and the most famous gardener in history; and you will read things out of the Red Book, and keep alive the memory of the age that is gone, so that people will remember the Great Danger and so love their beloved land all the more. And that will keep you as busy and as happy as anyone can be, as long as your part of the Story goes on".
Wow, I listed ten? I didn't think I would come up with this many!
Tumblr media
These questions were a lot of fun to answer as always. I want to thank our host, Hamlette, once more for this beautiful party. I'm already looking forward to next year's!
