Thinkin' about "didn't know they were dating" Phinabella but Isabella is the one who doesn't know.

She's been pining for years and finally can't take it anymore and blurts out that she's in love with him, and Phineas immediately and enthusiastically returns the sentiment, saying that he's glad she's finally felt comfortable enough to say it after all this time. (Isabella is loading, but manages to say, "what?")

Turns out that Phineas always returned her feelings, he just doesn't show them in big, flowery ways like he does in her fantasies. ("You didn't think Paris was romantic? I had so much fun looking for airplane parts together!" and "You've always been special to me, Isabella. I don't treat Buford or Baljeet like I treat you." and "You always seemed so nervous, I didn't want to push it." and "I'm happy as long as you're around, anyway — we don't have to be holding hands or kissing.")

Isabella is casually having an existential crisis as years of their friendship recontextualizes itself in her head. Phineas is waiting for her to finish processing very patiently. (He's waited this long, after all.) And with the confusion cleared up, they both agree to "continue" "dating" and have their first kiss 💕🥺

But. For years, I’ve been celebrating its airdate, February 9th, as “Phinbella Day.” This February 9th marks ten years since AYA aired in the US. This Sunday is THE phinbella day, ten years in the future.

I think my favourite argument of Phinabella shippers who believe that Phineas has a crush on Isabella is that they don't speak the same love language.

Isabella's vision for romance stems from all the tropes you see in young adult fiction. The kissing in the rain. Sharing an umbrella. Cute little ice cream dates. Personal heartfelt gifts with value that stems not from grandeur, but sentimentality. Sure she fantasizes about them running away together into the sunset as Phineas turns into a centaur to marry and live happily ever after but they've been purposefully overdramaticised and she thinks they're unrealistic. She wants PHINEAS to tell her he likes her, because he's the boy.

GIRL. Phineas Flynn Only Speaks in Grandeur!!!! You need an umbrella to walk to your house in the rain? NO PROBLEM! He's built an underground tunnel fully equipped for housing between your houses in 10 minutes using a shovel. Never seen a rainbow? No problem! He'll build a contraption to shoot rainbows and disrupt global weather to make you happy. Oh shoot. You meant unicorns? No problem! He'll genetically engineer one from scratch for you right now! He's made full day plans and a singing event with chorus girls and 20 tier cake of your favourite flavour the size of your house for your birthday DONT LOOK THE REST IS A SURPRISE. IT GETS BETTER. What's your whim, Isabella? You want a face carved into the mountain? A national holiday where everyone fawns over your cuteness? A chair in the senate? What does he need to do to prove it? Walk over lava? Climb a mountain? Travel the world in 24 hours????? Girl, the ONLY thing he cant do for you is say what he means out loud! He's not good at feelings! That's Ferb's job! You were always the braver, put together one!!! For God's sake Isabella Garcia-Shapiro, don't make me slap you!! He's been trying to say the same thing this whole time!!!

I read something about adult/teenage Phinabella going back to Paris to redo their little trip to the "City of Love" that went wrong in Summer Belongs To You, and... I don't know, I just kind of hate that?

I hate it because it's boring. I can literally grab any book from Walmart with a shirtless man on the cover and read about a whirlwind romance in Paris or turn on the Hallmark channel and see the same thing set in some Christmas town, and blah blah blah, it's the same shit I've seen my entire life.

The whole point of the Phinabella arc in SBTY is that Isabella realized wanting a storybook, traditional romance out of Phineas is wrong. It's something she expects out of love, but not something she should expect out of him. Narratively, this is reinforced because every dynamic in Paris goes sour. Candace and Jeremy don't have their kiss until they're home (because he met her halfway, get it?), Vanessa leaves Ferb alone on the Eiffel Tower, Phineas is more interested in bolts and blowtorches than romance, and that's good because that's who he is.

He's not the kind of guy who's going to sit down, relax, and watch a beautiful sunset with the girl he loves, and Isabella doesn't want him to be that person. She loves him for his weird-shaped head, and how he uses big words to explain simple concepts, and even in her birthday song about wanting to be alone with him for one day, Isabella is perfectly content to help Phineas on one of his projects by handing him the tools he needs.

Phineas doesn't show his love by getting someone flowers or chocolates or a spontaneous vacation to Paris. His love language is acts of service and quality time. He is perfectly content to spend a whole day with Ferb, doing nothing at all. He will make an entire styrofoam town at the mere suggestion that Buford can't risk getting any bruises. He fretted like crazy over Isabella's birthday gift and felt so bad when he thought it had been ruined.

Phineas literally goes crazy when he can't invent, and Isabella would never want him to change that part of himself — because if he did, he wouldn't be the boy she loves.

He would just be another normal guy, and their romance would be another normal story.

And I think Phineas and Isabella would both hate that.
