initially i had turned off all reblogs on my np / tknp art due to the alleged np burner situation just so i could think through and process everything. while i'm still not 100% settled on my stance with relation to the "real" and the "fiction" of rpf, i've (tentatively) come to the conclusion that even as my work is tied to the public images + likenesses of these players, its value comes from the derivative nature of fan works that goes so much beyond the original individuals.

it's actually pretty funny timing that you sent this ask in when you did! i was reading some amazing tknp fic this morning that addresses how fandom community at its core works to reappropriate source material, and how that disjunct between fanon / "canon" is a troubled but necessary one.

the main thing about rpf engagement for me personally is that fic offers such a rich space for reimagination and pushing + prodding at the unsavoury bits of real life, but fanart feels more surficial. i don't quite feel comfortable depicting people whose words and actions are at such odds with my own without being able to qualify those depictions, but i also know that what we do here is meant to be messy and unorthodox and ultimately fun. while i'll oscillate between positions, i've turned reblogs back on! though as of rn, i don't plan to draw np again.

I went back on my old phone (basically my art storage system) to find some old art of Ichor!! Like, the four pieces above are not completely Canon anymore, (I couldn't draw Paps to save my life 😭) but this was from before I had decided how Ichor and Reward were created!

The first one labeled 'Judgement' is actually a pretty accurate portrayal of New God aged Ichor! This was when I had it planned that Ichir was the God of judgement abd he made some poor choices so Balance chipped a piece of his power into Reward and Ichor had to raise him. That's no longer the case, but the design transfers over! In the second one 'Punishment and Reward' you can see that Balance's Halo was going to be on Ichor too! This is technically something he *could* manifest still but he deeply chooses not to. The design from 'Eclipse Era' for Ichor is 100% accurate. This was the Era when Ichor ran away from the god's to go stop a prophecy + ended up falling in love and having a full mortal family. (They- they're dead as hell but uhhh-) Then the training fits were scrapped, but the concept continues. Ichor has to train to keep himself healthy since his godly magic is weakened, abd Reward drags him out to do little exercises once they're trapped in the Catacombs!

Another thing is this one specific tree? (Looks goofy af, ignore that- it's meant to be a weeping willow but fluffier lmao-) It's on a ridge a few mountains away from Mt. Ebbot, overlooking a mountain village that Ichor always went back to. It's their sacred tree, but Ichor was the one who made it so different. Smth smth his blood got to the roots once. But basically if he's mourning, if he's celebrating, if he has any big occassion he goes to this tree. It would break his heart if this Tree was ever cut down or severely damaged by anything that wasn't Weather related.

And (old art again, rip my skills-) once upon a time, Ichor could manifest Dragon Features from his magic! Now this translates into a Canon ability to turn into a dragon-ish beast form, but that's more his bones reshaping and less Gold Magic Manifestations lol. He's always had a connection to dragon-vibes, and because he doesn't use gaster-blasters, he *is* the blaster. Only when he needs it though. (And with the chains he can't change shape at all, so that's only a post-story kinda thing or pre-chains thing lol-)

I also have another scheme cooking (two, actually?) One with his Sons (the immortal ones that exist in Catacombtale and escape into the Omega Timeline if that happens-) and the other is Regarding the first drawing I ever made of him and doing a comparison lol- Hoping this was fun lore in the meantime!!

followers, if you've been with me long enough, you know that i have quite strong opinions about how this show gets treated when it comes to interpretations and fandom/fanon. mostly, this is because i literally work in theater, and it's extremely backwards in my brain personally when shows get treated more like a movie or tv show than a performance piece.

im also one of the only ppl in this fandom that ever seems to dare speak on race (not the damn character smh). and anon, buddy, kiddo, this does have to do with race, gender, and sexuality.

firstly, what i think needs to be understood about newsies, is that it is theater, which means it is meant to be mutable. there is no one way. there should never be one way. it does not exist. secondly, theater does not exist in a fandom vacuum. its live every night, conceptually. theater is a live performance art.

interpretations change- it's the nature of theater. so i think asks like these really do illuminate the difference between fans of the show's content or fans of... i guess the show's culture's content.

this is a culture content ask.

one thing i really, truly, deeply need you all to understand: from an objective, script- and staging-based perspective, proshot sprace does not exist. they do not speak. they barely see each other. race does not even volunteer to go to brooklyn. the ship originates from the 1992 movie, where they do actually interact, which is why the ship has prevailed through the 90s to today. they're from the movie, not the musical.

of course, this doesn't bash the ship- it has history, and naturally fans want to create new history when they get a new source material (the musical). it's true for like every newsie ship lowkey (but also not lowkey because all the manhattan newsies do interact and sprace literally does not but thats a different post!!), which is something i do admire about the fandom- we do a lot of our own legwork here, we invent relationships and backgrounds from one-liners that could be given to tbh any frickin newsie. i respect the 30 years we have invented ships.

however.

when a huge, publicized, consistently sold out production comes along with spot conlon as not only a woman, but a woman of color (specifically black rn!) as the leader of the most feared group on stage, there becomes something much more important than a "sprace dynamic", which does not canonically exist in the musical anyway bro. you can't miss something that isn't there imo. often the story and casting within a story comes first, and goddamn if this isn't one of those times. lillie-pearl's spot brings bravado, swagger, confidence, and intimidation that is literally....fine maybe i'm being personal but it is slash gen incredible to see in technically a period piece! a black woman in leadership with that kind of assuredness! in such a popular musical! how is that not– automatically surpassing an often obsessed-over (yes i am. hinting at something here, straight girl fans) mlm ship?

and while i'm on the topic of the over-obsessiveness of mlm musical sprace, let me talk about uksies sprace. because what's also wack abt this ask is that sprace is not a hopeless case in this production- it literally has about as much 'evidence' as the proshot imo!!!!!

i got to hop over to 2nd row brooklyn seating for act 2 so i saw once and for all really close up, right. there's a moment when race is upstage letting the newsies in/down from the stairs. spot comes down and she does, in fact, share a look with him. race gives spot a nod and she keeps moving.

and like im gonna see the show again (every day i am counting my mf blessings fr), so if i'm wrong or they don't do it every time i'll correct myself, but that's what i saw with my own dang eyes on saturday. they do acknowledge each other in uksies.

and since they do, i really like. i have to ask. what is bothersome/unpopular abt uksies sprace, other than oh idk.... its not white/white mlm with a twink/manly bf trope? why can't race still love who spot is as a character, this strong and fearless ruler of brooklyn, in uksies? because tbh josh's racer...nahhhh because. this is such a side note now but they'd be so good together oh jesus am i gonna ship uk sprace. and it's not like they're 'taking away' from a queer ship because a) you can headcanon spot as a queer girl and race being trans is consistently popular and b) newsies has ten billion gayass ships bro we've been eatin for literal decades.

because they cut luna and june the campaign stuff was so much less prevalent like alex's texas plan just like. got to happen. june wasn't there to try to be like "hey maybe you should cut back you're deeply mentally ill" and also luna not being there meant that there was no triple agent thing with stakes to be revealed at the end after they got outed

june not being there took so much away from alex's speech about getting outed because she didn't write it

they just like. cut everything not pertaining to alex and henry getting together

the sex scenes were so awkward like in the hotel alex's key kept hitting henry in the face

and the polo montage of henry's ass bouncing was an odd choice

henry's actor looks a little inbred it was fitting

they cut so so much of the progression of their relationship also like it just went from zero to 100 with no in between because the emails were rushed and all the pining was gone

i liked the turkey scene that was funny

i have a lot more thoughts about it and i'm gonna rb when i think of more on my second and third watches but like. the main issue i have with the movie is they cut out all the stakes with the election and also a lot of the personal relationships between the characters that made the book feel so special and personal. it was ok? and i'd imagine it's certainly better if you have not read the book beforehand. enjoyable overall but it didn't keep the parts of the book that i most wanted to see adapted. 6/10 for what i expected and i was pleasantly surprised at times.

By popular demand and "I'm not writing all that for a coin event", this will be a randomizer event! ..At least, I believe that's the name?

Basically, you can send in a character and I'll use a wheel spinner to decide what edit type you get of them! You can also add a theme or aesthetic if you'd like, but that's optional.

For this event I ask that you only request for sources that are on my source list, and not my grey/blacklist or things that are currently unavailable (strikeout on my rentry). I don't typically deny requests, especially if they're for my source list, but do keep in mind I can and will deny a request if I see fit.

During this event, which will last from the 28th of June to the 12th of July, I ask that nobody sends in normal requests. Any non-event requests I get during this time will be denied upon me seeing them.

Examples for a request; "may I request shiho hinomori with a pink theme?" or "for the event could I request dabi? tysm in advance :D"

Aand here are all the possibilities for things you can get! Click on the image to see the full thing, the top++bottom got cropped a bit. I'm aware not everything I normally offer is here, I just feel as though names, titles, etc are.. Very specific? Like, if someone wants them, they'll request them, and I haven't gotten any reqs for those yet so. It just didn't feel right, lol.

🚀 Do you like to outline your fic first or create as you go?

➝ Outline 100% lol. To the point where it's sometimes a problem! One of the biggest traps I fall into is spending ages writing pages upon pages of planning, and never actually writing anything. But I'm working on improving that!

Having an outline helps me avoid writers block, by ensuring I always know what's happening next. For Plenism, I have an outline containing every chapter and the overall plot, as well as some notes on character development. Some are more detailed than others, and I frequently change things as I go, but yeah! Another thing I do is if my notes aren't detaield enough, when it comes time to write that chapter I'll make even MORE notes at the bottom of my page lol (cause my notes doc is separate from my fic writing doc).

👻 What is your wildest headcanon?

➝ HMM I'm not sure lol?? I mean, basically every Hilda headcanon out there is kinda wild given the state of our fandom and the long ass hiatuses lol. UHHH god I really can't think, does Lauren count lmao??? sketchbook?? If i think of something i'll rb this post with it lol

💘 Is it easier to write angst or fluff?

➝ I think writing light angst is a bit easier for me, I really enjoy it. I'm talking about the sort of... quiet, awkward moments, two people standing in silence unsure what to say. I love writing the little details they notice about eachother, the way one character fiddles with their hair and subtly tries to leave the room, whilst the other tries desperately to think of what to say, but fails. Something about trying so ahrd to make things work but falling short. But I like writing fluff too! Comedic dialouge is a lot of fun to write.

💡 How many WIPs do you currently have?

➝ Not really any unpublished ones lol? Not counting Plenism, ofc. I have a bunch of old fics I started and always meant to continue, but they're so old I wouldn't continue them now. There's alos a couple notes docs for stuff I want to write once Plenism is over, but I haven't actually started writing them sooo idk if they count

hi! so i finished RB and BB over the last few weeks and i’m currently working my way through the RQ series, just over half way through Glass Sword, but I’ve had a question about the genre for both the series.

So I know RQ is YA fantasy and i definitely see that throughout what i’ve read so far, even with the heavy themes, but for RB i think i’ve also seen that marketed as YA Fantasy? It seems much more adult, imo, especially as we have a few adult POVs and it goes more in depth to the dark topics that what i’ve read so far in RQ. I know you’ve mentioned a lot that authors don’t get nearly as much say in marketing and the publishing world as readers may believe, is the genre of RB being YA Fantasy possibly another instance of that? or have i just not been reading the right info and it is marketed as adult fantasy? I definitely feel the differences in the overall tone and inner voice of the characters between RQ & RB, RB seems more adult than YA and i only ask because of a recent tik tok i’ve seen talking about how women in the industry have a harder time getting their books labeled as adult rather than YA due to them not being taken as serious as male fantasy authors, and of course I really wish that wasn’t the case, I think women authors are just as talented as male authors and deserve to be taken as serious when writing anything, in this case fantasy.

This is my first time asking an author anything so if i’m overstepping my boundary as a reader than I completely understand and you 100% don’t have to answer my question, it’s just something i’ve been thinking a lot about while reading through your works. I absolutely loved RB and i’m devouring RQ, so thank you for the amazing reads!

This is a GREAT question.

I always approached Realm Breaker knowing in my heart it was crossover fantasy - meaning it was meant to appeal to both YA and adult fantasy genre. I think that's why you're picking up on the adult flavor alongside the YA. That's in the DNA of the story, and was very much my intention in this series.

But realistically, my name is known in YA circles, and my publishing imprint is HarperTeen. They publish YA, they market YA, and they know how to target YA readers. And that's reflected in the way Realm Breaker is presented to the reading public. If RB was at an adult fantasy imprint, even if nothing in the book changed, I know the marketing would be very different (and probably miss lots of YA fans).

Do I think my gender has anything to do with it? Not really. I think it has more to do with my reputation as a YA writer first, with a series like Red Queen on my resume.

Crossover marketing is really difficult, and hard to navigate. It's disheartening but it isn't surprising to me when some YA readers/RQ fans are disappointed in the more adult aspects of the RB series. Because they expected something different, more like Red Queen. But the reversal has been true too. It's always lovely to see positive feedback from adult fantasy readers who didn't realize Realm Breaker was for them too, and would have otherwise avoided the series.

Thanks so much for such an insightful question, and I'm glad to hear you're enjoying RQ after RB! I'm always fascinated by the Venn diagram of my readers, and which of my books they gravitate to!

Hi Nic, sorry to bother you and feel free to ignore this ask but I just need to rant!

Yesterday after reading Giuly Duchessa's article I was nearly hopeless but I thought, ok, it's still no official resist until they announce it. But now that they have done it's just despair. People are really celebrating that a man that has been on the team for 28years, was there when Michael won his titles for us has ended his career with the team this way.

And of course he made mistakes, but it also seems as if he asked for help before the season, didn't get any and now is taking all the blame for mistakes that potentially could have not happened if Elkann listened for once.

Mattia leaving and going as an engineer to Alpine or AM will be awful, but if he goes to RB or Merc we will be completely fucked.

And I'm just so done at people acting as if all of this is good, they really think we will be winning next year and here I am thinking we will be fighting with Alpine and McLaren again to get P3/4. I really had hopes for next year but now it's all gone.

Also, them saying we should have a new TP by the new year....is a mess. I don't like Vasseur and I don't think he will solve anything but if the only man that could say yes because he will be gone when audi arrives hasn't even accepted the role.

I can only hope that the storm that is affecting Juve and now this will make Elkann suffer and maybe use his brain for once.

Actually I felt real whiplash since being on italian Twitter meant that every 10 minutes there was a new name dropped as "the new Ferrari tp", esponentially weirder and weirder. The magical journey of reading the bombshell of Ross Brawn as the new tp 100% verified news and then after a few minutes reading his retirement letter? Name-dropping fucking Christian Horner????? I just laughed the whole day. I was SO convinced no one had any idea at all, because it was all so dumb !

But yeah, I was wrong, sadly. And I don't mind saying very clearly that I am not happy at all about any of this, that imo losing Binotto BOTH as a tp and as an engineer is an awful turn of events.

But if it can console you Anon I also think that we're still... pretty safe for next year at least? Most of the job on the car is already done, and I don't think that whoever steps in will even have the time (or the means *side-eying John Elkann*) to ruin anything.

Mostly tho I am just genuinely sad for Binotto? He's been working for Ferrari his whole career, as soon as he got out of university he got in the factory in Maranello. He was there for all of it, the glorious years and the worse ones, and he genuinely loved the team and wanted it to succeed. And without forgetting what a brilliant engineer he is. To see him now, made into a scapegoat for public appeasement is just...... demoralizing. Let's not even start about him possibly going to a top team or I'll start smashing things.

Vasseur...... sorry I just have to laugh or I'll go insane. People have been screaming and crying and raging about Ferrari flopping on strategy and they want to fix that with Vasseur. Maybe let's ask *check notes* Valtteri Bottas, Zhou Guanyu, Antonio Giovinazzi and Kimi Raikkonen a review about how well was the team managed, why not?

Whatever. I hope the work on the car at least won't have any setbacks. We still don't know exactly who is gonna follow Binotto from the engineering team... Or who will get in his place. But the starting project was so good and they've been saving on this year's upgrades to use them for next year, since they said they already know what to fix and how...... in that case at least we'll be covered until 2026? So enough time for stabilizing the new tp? And new drivers

when tilly first died it cemented pearl as an unhinged loose canon. no one wanted to ally with her because no one could predict what she would do. she frequently hurt herself to hurt scott etc etc. she only had tilly and when tilly died she died as well. pearl has been on red since the beginning

tilly's final death, at the hands of bdubs and impulse, called the horn to the horsemen and signaled the end was near. no more need for intervention, these last few will kill themselves.
