🔥 choose violence ask game 🔥 Secret Shanghai Edition
the character everyone gets wrong
Marshall. He is canonically an excellent cook, s why are we convinced he'd set something on fire if left alone in the kitchen?
a compelling argument for why your fave would never top or bottom
no comment
screenshot or description of the worst take you've seen on tumblr
EVERY SINGLE DAMN TIME I have seen Alisa and Phoebe shipped (let aroace people live and bisexuals are still bisexual even in a seemingly hetero relationship) or those takes I've seen on TikTok of people shipping Rosalind and Benedikt and Celia and Marshall if I weren't on my computer I would put sooooo many barf emojis here
what was the last straw that made you finally block that annoying person?
luckily nothing yet I believe
worst discord server and why
mine with my friends its sooo annoying how we have incredibly amazing and intelligent and sometimes incoherent conversations like guys we're the worst (sarcasm)
which ship fans are the most annoying?
like I said, anyone who ships the above things needs to stay 10 feet away from me at all times and undergo intense media literacy training
what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?
I think everyone's answer for this is Oliver. I'm so sorry we (especially me tbh) did you so dirty pre fhh I promise we've learnt our lesson!
common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about
Oliver loves cats. incorrect. Cats are his entire life. there is a difference, and we need to recognize it.
worst part of canon
roma and Alisa's dad just disappeared before I could beat him up
worst part of fanon
we're too funny my stomach literally hurts from laughing too hard sometimes. Seriously though, the above ship takes that make my blood boil, as well as some complaints about how a lot of us talk about how we think certain characters are neurodivergent/disabled. While I think some of those are actually considered canon, I don't understand why people are so made that we (a relatively neurospicy bunch) are identifying the parts of characters we relate to and labeling them. We're doing you no harm and not interfering with your ability to enjoy the characters. Shouldn't it be a good thing that we're able to identify with the characters? Just mind your business. (also anyone who erases Rosalind's and Alisa's aroaceness that is indeed canon and I hope both sides of your pillow are too warm)
number of fandom-related words you've filtered
I don't think any
the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
I don't think anyone hates these guys, but why don't we ever talk about the couple from LVC? They were so sweet, and I'm kind of sad we didn't get any mention of them in FHH.
worst blorboficiation
I feel like a bad Tumblr user, but I don't know what this means. is this like uwu-ification?
that one thing you see in fics all the time
@typingwithmyhandstied 's GENIUS
that one thing you see in fanart all the time
Juliette always has the appropriate amount of knives thank you very much for that guys :)
you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)
I personally don't get into the Rosalind is a vampire thing, but I'm cheering you guys on from afar (im just not into vampires lol)
there should be more of this type of fic/art
idk I should probably work on my university au
it's absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on...
the fact that not only did she feel comfortable falling asleep around Orion (see one of @no-1-rosalind-lang-apologist 's recent posts) but Rosalind was also muttering in French in that scene. Her dominant language. She was both out of it enough/comfortable enough with him that she dropped the I was raised in American fake accent and just started speaking normally in this essay I will- basically we need to talk more about the use of multilingualism in the ss books
you're mad/ashamed/horrified you actually kind of like...
past me would be horrified to know that I like Oliver now
part of canon you found tedious or boring
I think TVD can be a bit boring sometimes, but that makes sense, since it was Chloe's debut, and she's grown immensely since then
part of canon you think is overhyped
the seagreen trio is overrated (they are literally my favorite characters)
your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores
THE MULTILIGUALISM
ship you've unwillingly come around to
Olivercelia. Like I said, I was his strongest hater pre fhh. Now I see what she clearly sees in him.
topic that brings up the most rancid discourse
discourse on ss Tumblr is mostly joking. my personal favorite is when @marsneedstherapy and I pretend to yell at each other in different languages
common fandom complaint that you're sick of hearing
"no one appreciates x enough" I do. I love them.
#enjoy this took me all afternoon#chloe gong#secret shanghai#foul lady fortune#foul heart huntsman#writergracethepanda#these violent delights#our violent ends

Guys. I shouldn't have to say this, but
AO3 is not TikTok.
Play all the silly algorithm games you want by tagging every irrelevant trend and current pop song on your TikTok vids to try to boost their visibility, but that nonsense does not belong in a structured, tag-ordered archive like AO3 (which doesn't have an algorithm). It is not acceptable community behavior to list every single relationship tag in a fandom on your fic in order to try to accumulate more hits. Tags should reflect what's actually in the story so it can be properly categorized and filtered. If an 1,100-word E-rated fic is tagged "PWP, smut, seriously it's just porn, explicit sexual content, don't like don't read, [six more specific sexual act tags redacted so nobody has to encounter them on their Tumblr dash without warning]," IT 👏 DOES 👏 NOT 👏 BELONG 👏 IN 👏 THE 👏 GEN 👏 TAGS.
I just scrolled through four pages of the primary gen tag in one of my fandoms, and a full 70% of the fics in the results were slash fics -- many explicit -- that people had added gen/& tag(s) to, either out of ignorance of what those tags mean, or in an attempt to sucker more people into clicking on it. (I promise you, if someone is in the gen tag because they don't want to see romantic or sexual content, they are NOT going to enthusiastically R&R your slash fic. Filters exist for a reason. Shoving content at people who are not its target audience just annoys everyone.)
Some of this is obviously deliberate tag sandbagging: A <1K PWP for the main ship that also includes multiple slash and gen tags for multiple supporting characters? Hella sus. A fic that lists eight slash and gen tags for the main pairing alone, using every conceivable spelling permutation of their names? Probably looking to maximize hits (and clearly unaware of how AO3's search function actually works). But it's likely that not everyone is doing this maliciously, and since there might be some legitimate confusion surrounding the use of relationship tags, here's a review for new users or anyone who needs a refresher:
Which AO3 Relationship Tag Should You Use?
Character A/Character B: A slash between character names means that they are depicted in the story as being in a romantic and/or sexual relationship (it does not have to be both). This relationship can be canon, fanon, headcanon, crack ship, crossover, whatever. It just means they're romantically entangled to some extent within the tagged story. (Fun fact: The slash has been used to denote this kind of fanfiction for over half a century! "Slash fic" has its roots in early Star Trek zines, which were the first to codify the slash between names as indicating a romantic relationship. This shorthand spread to other fandoms in the 1970s and '80s, and became the standard for internet fanfiction archives when they came into being in the '90s.)
Character A & Character B: The et/ampersand ("and") between names means that the characters are depicted in a non-romantic/non-sexual relationship, OR that they might be in a romantic relationship (canonically or otherwise), but the tagged story focuses on non-romantic aspects of the relationship. Stories that deal with characters' friendship, rivalry, family bonds, betrayal, coming to understand each other, etc. all fall under this heading. This is also called "gen" or "genfic," derived from the AO3 relationship category (below):
In the event that a fic qualifies for both types of tags, you can use additional clarifying tags such as "pre-slash" (characters are not yet in a romantic relationship, but are heading in that direction), "background Character A/Character B" (the romantic relationship exists only as a backdrop for or incidental to the main story), or "slash applies to chapter 5 only" (if only one scene or chapter deals with the romantic aspects of the relationship) to help readers know what to expect from the story. (The last tag is also used for fics which jump content ratings between chapters, usually due to an isolated scene of sexual content or graphic violence, e.g. "M rating is for chapter 8 only.")
Learning how AO3's tagging system works and using it as intended will only benefit users (authors and readers) in the long run. AO3's filter system is the most extensive and versatile of any fanfiction archive in existence, so you can find the exact things you want without scrolling for days. (There are even additional search tools you can use to narrow your results beyond the basic filters!) But it all depends on the tags being accurate. If authors don't apply the correct tags to their fics, the system breaks down.
So go forth and tag properly! Please. I beg you.

1, 3, 6-8, 13, 16, 20-22 (didn’t think of a Thing to ask abt so go wild!!) (sorry if this has sent several times my app keeps crashing <3)
1) the character everyone gets wrong
oooh another one of this question lemme think of another one to complain about…. um. ty blackthorn…. i know you don’t know him but you should have a basic level of familiarity with his sherlock holmes swag and necromancy realness and ghost guy slay like. just based on my posting… i don’t like fandomy interpretations of him that make him like. soft and cutesy and uwu whatever like that boy is a huge fucking cunt he’s the worst… he’s a supervillain in training it’s ridiculous stop calling him your soft little baby or whatever the hell…. like you sound insane not even cassie is babying him like that get serious
3) screenshot or description of the worst take you've seen on tumblr
i’m saying this cuz i know you were there too so you’ll get it but literally the 2021 pre s4 era of bylertheorism posting was so awful fr….
6) which ship fans are the most annoying?
wow see prev response….. no but like i’ll give a real answer. um idk i already complained about a few things but i’m gonna pull out a nicheish one due to the fact i saw a sofia wylie tiktok today and it made me think about hsmtmts. um i think ricky and gina shippers ruined everything sacred about that show and tim federle needs to die for the crimes he’s committed against me for them. this is also true about jiara but i’m beyond caring about obx and hsmtmts is like. THE show that got me through summer 2021. it was so rough oh my god. ej and gina were all i had. and now i don’t even have them anymore we should all kill ourselves. not to be a person that cares too much about ships. idk you had to be there maybe. and by there i mean like. you had to be me i guess
7) what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?
damn speaking of outer banks. jj. that boy should kill himself i don’t even care. or jesper shadow and bone. i promise i’ll like him more when i read about him but as a netflix original comic relief man…. i just can’t get behind him. also that actor was in a movie i hated so he should have to do like. 100 hours court ordered community service picking up trash in parks. that’s just one girl’s opinion
8) common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about
can i talk about my shadowhunters. ok well i’m going to. it’s like sorry about your mental illnesses or whatever but i don’t think projecting them onto kit herondale is necessarily the way to go babes. he exists in a fantasy universe where he can put a little tattoo on his body and instantly gain speed, the kid hangs out with werewolves and his mom can do magic. i don’t think he is taking adderall. plus shadowhunters can’t take medication anyway so L + ratio + i can tell you’re either 16 or the most annoying adult alive. sorry if you’re 16, i promise when you stop being 16 you will feel better about life. like fandom lovessss to headcanon him with the most boring shit imaginable. oh you headcanon that this character who lives in a universe where MAGIC IS REAL has adhd? that’s cool i headcanon that he’s a virgin but makes up elaborate lies about it so none of the bad guys who are constantly after him can use him as a virgin sacrifice. i just made that up but it’s still more fun than being like ohh this character is training to be able to kill demons but the most important thing in his life is remembering to take his medication!! like booo 👎 nobody wants to read about medication in fantasy…. unless it’s like some sick ass herbs and potions like my buddy gaius makes. whatever.
13) worst blorboficiation
can i say will herondale. you know what don’t even worry about it. i’m gonna say tom holland spiderman. i don’t engage with literally any of that but i am an internet user in this day and age so it is unfortunately thrust upon me. sorry to that man but i hope peter parker dies goddamn. today’s writers just don’t hate their protagonists enough they always wanna keep ‘em around as long as possible it’s insane. arthur conan doyle had the right idea i think. like kill that dude!!
16) you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)
i hateeeeeee fandom himbo characterization. ESPECIALLY. when it comes to my beloved arthur bbc merlin. he is not. a himbo…. we should all kill ourselves.
20) part of canon you found tedious or boring
no offense to cassandra clare’s infernal devices but. i’m so so sorry tessa i love you forever it’s just. well.
21) part of canon you think is overhyped
i’m just gonna say barchie. can’t fucking stand this season sorry abby that i made you watch this show only for its final season to be a flop ass barchie season.
22) your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores
i think we all need to talk more about how in city of fallen angels clary had a pink cell phone. that was a nothing detail i just think about it a lot and i didn’t know what else to say here.

I’ve been harping about this for months now.
We don’t constantly churn out content just for the sake of keeping engagement. Platforms like TikTok or Instagram work off the quantity not the quality of said content. Fics take time to write, people have lives, their own struggles and because they care about their stories, there can be so much research involved. We are happy when people enjoy our characters. It is beyond the number of followers.
For crying out loud, we have whole celebration events when we reach double digit followers. It’s not so much about how many followers we get, it’s much more about what kind: are they engaging in discussions about our stories? Do they have their own theories? Have we created a character they love to hate and they are sharing it with us on the comments and reblogs?
I’ve noticed a trend of bringing TikTok censored language into the tumblr and ao3 spaces. The whole ‘unaliving’, ‘offing themselves’, ‘Grape’, ‘schmex’, ‘s*x’ are making appearances in posts, tags and warnings. You know what that does? It bypasses reader’ filters, it makes their exclusionary tags fail, it dupes reader into material they weren’t willing to read at all.
Same goes to the overall misuse of tags, i.e.: using a fandom tag on a post about flat tires for “reach”. This is disingenuous to say the least. It might be acceptable in TikTok, here we are not for intentionally and gratuitously upsetting people.
Tumblr’s FYP is not peddling products and brands. You get to see paid for adverts for games and apps but they are not posts from user accounts. We are not writing reviews of the newest foundation, cleaning products, varied gadgets. WE ARE NOT MONETISING OUR CONTENT!!! WE DON’T MAKE MONEY FROM EVERY SINGLE POST. WE DO THIS FOR FUN. DON’T APPLY THAT LOGIC HERE.
Now that the monetisation bit is off of my chest…
Tumblr’s FYP can bring you the most hilarious posts ever. You know those screenshots people post over annoying music and read by robots? Content stolen from tumblr (and quite often twitter too). It can also bring you a lot of posts about social issues with in-depth analysis (and often credible sources and by that I mean peer reviewed articles published in recognised medium) that you don’t get in other platforms. The genocide in Gaza is not being truthfully reported by traditional media, I’ve seen posts here that chronicle the bombings, the violence, and humanise the victims. They call for action and understanding instead of transforming it into a spectacle.
We want you to think, not passively swallow sound bites. We want you to use critical thinking and text comprehension to challenge what is being said. We want you to understand context before passing judgement because that’s lacking a lot.
Thanks for coming to my TedTalk.
The TikTok-fication of Tumblr and why it needs to stop before your fave writers are gone for good:
1. “Part 2??”
Unlike TikTok, writing 5,000 words for a fic does not happen in 6 seconds or more. Weekly updates are from a writer who spoils you and is passionate about their story. Don’t kill the passion by demanding for more and not appreciate what’s already given.
2. The DC Conundrum
Many writers on this platform hail back from the ff.net days where dark content is a norm, not like TikTok where even death has to be censored or you could get flagged.
Despite that, writers are doing you a service by sharing fic warnings despite how it may take away from a plot twist or a big reveal. However, there’s a fine line between sharing warnings and downright spoiling our own work. Heed the warnings, don’t be a dick. If you don’t like it, don’t read it. Learn how to filter your own content, too, while you're at it.
3. The Wild Algorithm
Unlike TikTok, Tumblr’s FYP is not in your face and you have a choice to not view it. Content often gets buried a few days after it’s posted without reblogs or comments to keep it alive.
4. Passive Content Consumption
Ties back with point #1. If you’re only sitting back and reading works without supporting the writers, they can’t spend 6 seconds to conjure up a fic. Writing takes time, editing, proofreading. Tumblr is a book club, not a delivery service.
5. De(constructive) Criticism
If an opinion isn’t asked for, don’t give it. Many writers choose this craft for their own enjoyment and to share a thought or story about a beloved character to those who love them, too. If an opinion is asked? Be kind when you share it across to them. No one likes their hard work to be shat on by someone who doesn’t understand the time and effort it took to create this piece.
6. Are You My Content Machine?
Again, back to point #1. Writers have busy lives. There are days when we want to scream into the void about our favourite characters. We want to share our thoughts about them or sometimes, we just want to talk about what happened during lunch break. Demanding and expecting that a writer post content without giving a shit about the soul behind the screen? Dehumanizing.
Don’t ruin the experience for those of us who are still here. Do your part to make fandom better for everyone.
#this may sound condescending but i mean all these points from the heart of my pussy#this is for you new fandom babies btw#pls understand that this platform is not like tiktok#leave the TikTok behaviour at the door don’t bring it here

"op sec (operational security) is something i'm extremely passionate about. if anyone wants a full-ass post about that, i'm more than happy to throw one together."
yeah please
(only took me 3 minutes to read u actually bc i'm a quick reader and yet i took my time)
dank, this is what i like to hear! (also it's good that you were able to handle the tl;dr bc this post will probs be a lil tl;dr too lol)
i'll try to go over this point by point.
#1: don't use the same usernames on every single platform.
this is one of great contention nowadays because people like to have "brand recognition" of sorts. they like to be discoverable. they like their friends (and in some cases, fans) be able to find their posts across multiple platforms. this is all well and good if you are cultivating a specific type of experience. for example, if you're a content creator, it makes total sense.
most people online are not content creators, though. if you have no desire to be a content creator, try segmenting your experiences. that is to say, have ONE account with a username for your personal/IRL posts, and ONE account for your fandom shitposts. make them completely different. don't use the same user icon or whatever. don't use any PII (personal identifying information) on your fandom shitpost account.
even IF you would like to be a content creator, i would still suggest segmenting your experiences. if you manage to strike it big in a content creation space, think of this: eventually, you'll get crazy stalker fans. you may get people in your DMs asking invasive shit. prevent this from happening: have a contingency plan in place. this means, again, having SEPARATE usernames for your different purposes. is this annoying? sure. but it keeps you safe.
to illustrate what i mean, let's say you do want to be a content creator. your creator name is "mcguffinthecreator" (that's what it is now, you have to use this, it's the rules). you can have your content creator twitter, tumblr, facebook, insta, tiktok, whatever else have the username "mcguffinthecreator" for brand recognition purposes. for your personal shit, make up something totally different for each one that cannot be connected back to the mcguffin personality OR to each other. "anonsworld" for one. "ilikepencils" for another. so on and so forth.
#2: don't reuse passwords
this is a basic one you may have heard and most people shrug it off because it gets difficult to remember multiple passwords when every fuCKIN WEBSITE these days bullies you into creating an account.
but you don't have to.
use firefox and it'll generate passwords for you and save them to the browser. and if you ever need to copy and paste the passwords into another browser for whatever reason, you can do that by going to about:logins in the browser bar on firefox. and, if you make a firefox account (yeah i know aNOTHER ACCOUNT), any instance of firefox that you log into will port those passwords over, even on mobile devices. this is also a function on edge and chrome, but i highly recommend firefox over those two browsers for security reasons.
#3: don't use your real name on any account that you want to do fandom bullshit in
(or really in general, but i know that's not gonna happen for most people)
if you really wanna be low-key, don't give your real name to anyone online that you don't know IRL. yes, it is 100% possible to make real, genuine friendships with people online. i've known @sapphire-weapon for like, 15+ years and we've yet to meet in-person. i know her real name, she knows mine. but we never use them, anyway. we're just "ash n sirea" in any online shit we get up to, and it'll stay that way forever.
that might sound strange to a lot of people, but it protects both of us to do that. if we just started using each other's real names in tumblr posts, for example, that opens us both up to weirdos tryna find us. it sounds paranoid and it probably is, but we both grew up during a time when the internet was just getting big. both of us remember a time before having a personal computer in the house or everyone having internet at home or everyone having a cellphone. and we were both taught to never give out your real name to anyone online, ever.
this protects us from shit like... yknow... people calling our places of employment to tell our bosses that we're horrible people, actually. which is a thing that people do like it's normal nowadays since it's so fuckin easy to find information on more normal people. you say one wrong thing and it's easy for someone who's got a chafed enough bhole to find your deets and start harassing you IRL. keeping your PII close to the chest is the smart thing to do if you plan on getting involved in any online discussions these days.
#4: don't post any identifying pics on your fandom bullshit accounts
this means selfies, pics of your house, pics of places around your house, so on and so forth. again, this sounds restrictive, but it's extremely easy to find where people live that way AND it opens you up to AI photo manip bullshit. if you must post a pic, be sure to strip its EXIF data before posting it. you can find steps on how to do that here. and just... don't post selfies publicly. at all. even if you strip the EXIF data before posting, that doesn't prevent people from taking your selfie and running it through either a photoshop manip or an AI tool. share selfies only with people you absolutely, 100% trust. this means locking down instagram accounts where you want to post selfies, for example. this goes back to having multiple accounts for different purposes.
#5: inform your friends that, if they know your fandom bs accounts, to NOT tag you in posts that they think you would like
this is a huge hole that people often overlook. let's say you have some IRL friends that are also into fandom. let's say you've been doing your due diligence and keeping your experiences segmented. you've got different usernames, don't use your IRL info on the fandom account, you're all good.
you share these accounts with your IRL fandom friends because maybe you post insightful stuff, funny fandom memes, or maybe you're an artist. you figure "they're my friends, they're not gonna purposefully expose me."
problem is, a lot of people these days don't really "get" the concept of keeping your info on lock online. you can't assume that they'll look at a situation the same way you do.
so let's say your friend finds a funny meme for the fandom you're in. they know you have a personal account and a fandom account. they figure "well, i'll tag the fandom account because this is fandom-related." so they do.
here's the problem: let's say you've pissed off someone who's hate-following you. they see someone's tagged you on a post. maybe the friend even uses your real name rather than your handle because why would they use your handle? they know you IRL. to the friend, it's harmless and makes sense to use the name they've always known you by.
but to the hate-follower, they've just been handed a juicy dish on a silver platter. now they can use a few tricks to find your actual personal account. for the sake of clarity, let's use twitter as an example. let's also assume that on your IRL account, you're using your real name. and let's ALSO assume that your friend doesn't lock down their account because most people really don't.
they go to the friend's account who tagged you.
they look in their following list.
they look for your name.
they find the account.
they see your personal deets just sittin there, ripe for the picking.
they can now harass you and stalk you with more precision than if they just had your fandom account handle.
for that reason, you have to make a call here. do you share your fandom account with your IRL friends that you trust to not fuck you over on purpose? or do you keep that private from even them to protect yourself from unintentional exposure? depending on your friend group, some may be more diligent than others when it come to keeping your accounts properly segmented. you can tell your friends that have the account to never tag you in anything and to just private message it to you. that's one option. the other is to just never reveal that you have a fandom account and interact with fandom on a very, VERY surface level degree on your IRL account. the last is to just never post anything on your personal IRL account and/or lock it to friends only.
#5: "commit to the bit." don't break "character" if you meet someone in fandom who seems really cool
now, i say "character" as if you'd be acting differently, but what i really mean is your handle and username set-up for your fandom bs account. if you meet someone really cool, don't get starstruck and answer any question they pose to you like "what area are you in?" or "is [handle] your actual name?" because these are dangerous questions to answer when you don't know what the intent is. again, it sounds paranoid, but assume everyone you meet online could potentially fuck you over in the end. it took me a very long time to tell my closest online friends my actual name and location. i've met some of them IRL and i've sent letters/packages to others. it's not unheard of, but it's not something i do lightly. if you are REALLY keen on becoming pen pals with someone, set up a PO box.
this also protects you from common scams like pig butchering or revenge porn. online dating is more ubiquitous than ever and who wouldn't want a bf or gf who's into fandom like you are? problem is that you can open yourself up to trouble if you meet someone who's really really interested in your personal life when you're on your fandom bs account. don't give up your IRL account for anyone who asks, just because you're into them, romantically or otherwise. most people who are looking to scam or troll don't tend to pull a long game. this means being pals with someone for an extended period of time before opening up any further.
#6: don't give away personal troubles to anyone in fandom
this means shit beyond like "my mom is being an asshole" and going into providing detailed backgrounds on your tumultuous family relations. this gives people ammunition. if you're in DM with someone and it comes up in conversation, don't go into detail. treat it like a work relationship: coworkers don't need to know your personal life and neither do fandom friends.
and that's what i got for now. there's a lot to go into regarding PII opsec. there's a subreddit called /r/privacy that i'd recommend perusing for more ideas on how to protect yourself online. they tend to go into things like online tracking, advertising, VPNs, and so on, but they also have discussions about just keeping yourself as anonymous as possible online in relation to your IRL self.
i hope this helps! feel free to share it to any of your pals if you like and if you have more questions, just let me know!

ughhhh me too. in the past I said I wouldn't mind watching a slice of life about knb, and it's still true now ;-; I tried getting into fujimaki-sensei's other manga about baseball....but eh.. it just didn't hook me.. if it were to become an anime though, I think I'd be interested
I think I need to have a listening spree of the new album hahahaha SAME I feel like with their self-titled, they really found their sound.. for me, it's THAT album that got me into them. I still remember the first time I ever saw Afterlife on MTV and what I was doing and how I reacted (and how I fell in love with Synyster Gates hahahaha) did you have a *favourite* member? ngl, I was a total fangirl for Syn (if my previous statement didn't give it away yet 😂) and I still have a reaaalllyyyyy soft spot for him when I look back at my teenage self, but in its entirety I've definitely grown out of it and just respect each band member as a musician and artist
I wouldn't say it's amazing, but more of a convenience. so if you're on your phone most of the time, it's handy to have. although I preferred it in the past where the customization was minimal lmao just so there are fewer things to fuss about.. now you gotta make a theme for a desktop version AND mobile version.. yeah.. and I think most of the users now prefer to just like stuff or passively scroll through the app.. oh true.. before, a mutual's mutual would more often be in the same fandom as you and it was THAT easy. now, it's hard to even begin where to look.. it's nice to see those old posts from time to time. like it's still alive after all these years 😂 (lol yeah on other social media, a post either dies out or is reposted—which I find really annoying. I see the same post 10 times but from different usernames..like talk about originality) I was on twitter for a while until it became X which sucked 🫤
awww hahaha gotta thank that stray cat 😂
thank you so much, I appreciate it 🥺 I've been doing some journaling.. I guess it's helping.. and just trying to ground myself with things I used to enjoy and surrounding myself with good company. though I really wish there was a fast forward button for recovery
really i didn't know he had a baseball manga! now that you mention baseball, have you seen diamond no ace? i remember watching quite a few episodes but i don't think i finished it, i think it was ongoing back then when i was watching. i wonder if i should get back to it...
DONT TELL ME YOU ALSO DISCOVERED THEM ON MTV LMAOOOO i saw the nightmare video there for the 1st time and got hooked !!! that's so funny, mtv used to be pretty good, found a bunch of bands on there back in the day. and yea i totally get you, syn was definitely the coolest!! i don't think i had a fav member but i found matt the most attractive back when he had super short hair >.> but when i saw them live in 2013 he had long hair so that was unfortunate hahahaha. what other bands are you into?? i've been obsessed with dir en grey lately if you don't know them you gotta check em out trust me on this one :p
wtf a theme for the mobile version, that sounds like a hassle. yep definitely ends up being like the more new features they introduce on social media, the more cumbersome everything gets, cause it seems like they don't even think em through more often than not..
you know what, another thing i find refreshing about tumblr nowadays is the lack of reels/shorts/tiktoks whatever they call short form videos lmao idk abt you but i never really got into them (unless they include some cute animals lol)
it seems like you're handling it in a healthy manner, i'm rly happy to hear that! i know what you mean, but you really gotta take it a day at a time, it's gonna be much better for you in the long run than if you were to bottle up everything and "force" healing. you'll see, soon enough you'll be surprised to find yourself not even thinking about the person for several days. it happens naturally somehow, and you'll be an even stronger person mentally for having dealt with everything this way

I feel like I was sent back to the early 2010s why the fuck are there so many smug book-only people in this godforsaken fandom like hello?????
People are out here discussing that an adaptation is bad bc it doesn't do a one to one recreation of the original, almost losing the plot and barely wanting to engage in the adaptation, of course you're going to have an awful time!
Ffs there are many and I mean MANY reasons why certain parts were cut or changed or shifted and as long as the adaptation doesn't completely lose the message, butcher the characters beyond recognition, and throw out the ENTIRE FUCKING PLOT BY THE SECOND EPISODE then I think the show is actually doing pretty well all things considered.
There's also this sense of entitlement about how the creator should adapt his own work. It's either too much or too little. There's either too much exposition or too little time to understand everything. The characters don't feel like themselves or they're too much of a caricature or whatever.
Obviously, I, tumblr user everyone-else-is-stoopid, know the characters so much better than that stupid author! Even if I haven't read the books in years and refuse to understand the context of when they were written and why these changes ar being done now!
Like, I get being disappointed about some stuff being changed or maybe this one episode could've been better but the fucking entitlement is annoying as fuck.
The fact that this doesn't even just extend to people on here or TikTok but straight up large YouTubers who are being pedantic for the sake of pedantry is exhausting.

have started to notice that podcast fandoms have huge problems with art theft and its nagging at me
i dont think fans of shows, especially podcasts, realize that when you save art from tumblr or twitter or whatever and then repost it without credit, youre still stealing art no matter if you claim its yours or not. its so incredibly annoying to spend hours on art that you really like, only to have it be reposted without any mention of your name anywhere by some tiktok or tumblr user making a meme collab or an aesthetic board or whatever. i get that these characters dont have canon faces that you can use but that doesnt mean you can just take other peoples work and pretend you dont know how reverse google image searching works.
if you dont have credit, then dont repost the art. its real fuckin simple. ive seen way too many edits or meme compilation makers try to squirm their way around this and i think its because they know its bad to do and they dont wanna steal art, but that doesnt mean you can still do it you annoying lil shits

NEW TUMBLR USERS: some bullet points on etiquette and how to use the site, wherein I will also try to explain some things and be slightly more nuanced, because subcommunities are not created equal
first thing, which is very important if you're a tiktok, youtube, or reddit expat: you follow PEOPLE here. now, a lot of people will curate their blogs to have only one theme, but that's not everyone. there basically no algorithm, most people turn off recommended posts, and the tags are pretty glitchy, so most people follow blogs, and not as much tags.
on the tag thing: when I refer to tags, I mean the little section of the post that's just tags at the bottom. anything you type in there immediately starts with a #. you can have spaces in them, but not quotations or commas (quotations bring the text in quotation marks into the front of the tags as it's own tag, and commas separate tags). you can use them to organize your reblogs, but most people use them to ramble or comment. if you click the notes of a post, you can see everyone's tags, and the OP of a post + whoever you reblogged it from can see whatever tags you add in their activity (notifications) page. if your tags are funny, they might get screenshotted and added to the post. adding things in the tags, in a lot of spaces, is viewed as more polite and less obnoxious than making actual additions, and having your tags added to a post is like someone saying "no, everyone deserves to see this".
also about tags: adding them in the post itself, like #this, does nothing. note it's not clickable. tags do help with outreach, though, but only with original posts. that is, if you make a post and add a fandom tag to it, other people browsing that tag or looking up that fandom might see it. if you reblog someone else's post and add a fandom tag to it, that's kind of just for you.
on additions (that aren't tags): an addition will stick to the post, ie. if you reblog something with a comment and someone reblogs it from you, unlike tags, that addition will also be shared. similar to stitching a titkok or quote-retweeting, except the ownership of the post (and the credit) don't change. unlike quote retweeting, it's bad form to reblog something to make fun of or disagree with OP, unless you're picking a fight. if you don't want drama, I've seen people just vague (subtweet? do we still use that?) other posts, or screenshot the offending post to comment on it. again, OP gets notified of every interaction. they can also see you disagree in the tags.
addition etiquette varies with context and your relationship to the OP. fandoms, especially smaller fandoms, don't mind additions as much and, depending on the post, discussion and expansion upon what's being said is appreciated. if you're mutuals with someone, reblogging with a comment (depending on the post and the person, obviously) might be seen as friendly. on social justice and activism centered spaces, additions are not always welcome and might be seen as disrespectful or derailing. if the post has a lot of notes, OP probably doesn't care anymore, but don't expect a response. too many inane additions is also seen as annoying, so sometimes people will go back and reblog a version of the post without them.
reblog etiquette also varies. for artists, usually reblogs are appreciated, since it's the only way they get exposure, and spam reblogging from an artist will probably be taken as a compliment (though they might be embarrassed if you reblog old art). do not reblog personal posts/vent posts. if it's something super sensitive and personal, it'll probably be seen as an invasion and offensive. if you reblog someone talking about their day with no apparent reason, it's just kind of weird. some people like spam reblogs, some people will block you for them, sometimes it's just weird. especially if you don't follow them or you're not mutuals.
you might see that gimmick blogs are a thing here, or very specific blogs. unlike other social media, you don't have to make a whole separate account to have two accounts, you can have sideblogs. sideblogs can also be shared between multiple users without the need to share passwords. you can't send asks or reply to a post with a sideblog, though, nor can you like a post or follow someone through your sideblog. that'll still be through your main. sideblogs are often used for organizational purposes, eg. having a blog for each fandom or niche, or having a personal blog and an art sideblog. some people will have a blank main and only use sideblogs, but usually that'll be somewhere in the description or pinned post.
on bios/descriptions and pinned posts: in regards to how much info you put on there, YMMV. depends on which "corner" of tumblr you're in. the links in my bio are a relic from when all the cool kinnies had an edgy lyric and a link in their description, leading to an "about" page (page on their actual tumblr, better seen on desktop) similar to a carrd. most people now just have basics in their description, or something funny in their description and a pinned post with things like pronouns, name, and sometimes a DNI. some people will put nothing in their description and not share any personal information, some people will list fandoms. carrds are not as popular, since you can write however much you want. some people have traded the link int he description to links on their pinned post (eg, link to an about post, a link to their selfie tag, a link to their art)
try to learn the language. so to speak. "moot", "oomf" (and variations), "bestie" are some, off the top of my head, that are not used nearly as much and will get you clocked and sometimes made fun of (even if not directly). also, you don't need to censor swear words. there's no algorithm and tumblr doesn't care if you're a pottymouth, so saying things like a$$ or d1e makes you look silly. on the other hand, there IS a ban on porn, so tags and words that are deemed nsfw are impossible to search (will return a blank page) and posts that are explicit might get flagged and hidden. there's still plenty of porn around, but people have to find workarounds (and your blog might also get taken down if it's a porn blog). also, generally the sentiment here is not very favorable towards being sexual toward strangers (eg, mommy? sorry jokes) or being rude to strangers (eg, calling someone an insult or a slur jokingly). but, again, YMMV.
this is getting way too long, so, ironically: long posts are annoying. if a reblog chain gets too long, maybe take it to DMs. some posts are long on purpose, to jokingly annoy your followers (eg. the famed "do you like the color of the sky" post). some people find it funny, some people find it obnoxious. a lot of people tag long posts with #long post, so their followers can block that tag and not see the post (there is a feature to block tags and words in your settings).
remember that tumblr is not a monolith: best way to learn is participate and observe!

Your blocking/Xkit answer also really inspired me to dig deeper into managing my dash content. I've discovered the content filter. I know this is ultimately personal, but do you have any recommendations for someone low on spoons who only comes here to hang out and have fun? Like dogwhistle/highly volatile political things?
You mean like stuff to filter? Here's a selection I have filtered for my preferences:
doctor who
game of thrones
harry potter
marvel
marvel comics
I admit that I don't particularly enjoy fandoms even if I like the original content usually. The only fandom I consistently like is Terry Pratchett and Discworld.
So, I would personally advise liberally blocking new fandoms that are starting shit in the tags or on your dash. It does actually make the user experience better, because no one likes to start shit more than fandoms.
As well, if you see anyone in the tags who is using them inappropriately (i.e. using like #pagan when talking about #witchcraft or just to advertise their content?), you can block 'em. I tend to only block the annoying ones, but general rule of thumb is that the folks who come to tumblr and use the tags like it's instagram, aren't folks you wanna engage with. They don't actually know how tumblr works.
Depending on what you see as political / discourse it might be helpful for you (to make your dash exclusively fun) to filter stuff like:
discourse
tw
any specific "-ism" such as racism, s*xism, homophobia, queerphobia, etc.
specific gender/s*xuality labels
trauma or iterations of that
n*zi
nsft (not safe for tumblr) -- unless you wanna see it ofc
the word rights as it would hide any instances of like discussion of land rights, human rights, animal rights, etc.
names of social media outlets, ex. facebook, twitter, tiktok
Oh! Also, if you have specific beef with individuals on tumblr, make sure to block them from your main and your side blog(s). You have to do that separately. That will ensure they can't interact with your content as much, if you're operating out of a sideblog.
I have no idea if this is helpful, but I hope it is.

Someday I’m gonna get my shit together and write a proper exploration of the phenomenon that I like to call hyperoptimisation, but for now: this dislike of fame on Tumblr isn’t cultural, like people assume, it’s baked into the code itself. Oh, it’s become cultural -- people have noticed how much getting high activity on Tumblr sucks and joked with it accordingly so it’s become a thing that we all know and expect to suck, but that’s because it genuinely does, on a user experience level, suck because of how the site is designed.
Traditionally, a) Tumblr gives you very little control over your posts AND b) is structured in a way that doesn’t shield you at all from backlash. Most sites go one way or the other; Facebook gives you a high amount of control over your posts; they stay on your page and you can edit them or delete them and they’re gone. Twitter gives you similar functions, and is set up so that a reblog (I forget what twitter calls it) pulls the activity to the responder, not to you. This provides the user with some control and shielding of their post even if it breaks containment.
Tumblr has added more and more controls recently, but it’s still fundamentally a pretty uncontrollable space. Once a post has been reblogged, you have no control over what it does on someone else’s dash -- even if you edit the post, their copy is the same. If you make a small mistake and edit it to fix it? If it’s been reblogged, doesn’t matter -- that reblogged fork will have the error forever, and people will see it, assume you don’t know, and message you corrections for years.
Because of this, when a post “breaks containment”, ending up being exposed to all kinds of people including tall poppy cutters, general harrassers, moral purists who don’t agree with your morals, and just generally really annoying people, it’s a potentially harrowing experience, resolved only by the judicious use of the notoriously glitchy and ineffective ‘block’ feature or simply waiting for the post to die.
Which may never happen. I’ve had posts “die” and resurrect a full two years later, because a lack of activity doesn’t kill a Tumblr post. There are methods for stopping yourself from receiving notifications about a post, but the fact that that’s even a necessary feature says a lot about the usability of the site once a post breaks containment.
Related to this, the nature of the distribution of Tumblr posts encourages ‘breaking containment’ in a way that most platforms don’t. Tumblr does have engagement/preference algorithms these days (the side bar recommendations, ‘best stuff first’ and ‘for you’ views, et cetera), but provides the option to mostly ignore them through exclusive use of the ‘following’ view, something most of the long-term users prefer because the whole reason we’re here instead of on a properly coded site is that we fucking hate algorithms. However, the lack of employment of these algorithms also means it’s absurdly easy to end up on “the wrong side of TikTok” (as the tiktokkers say) -- a single user can act as a bridge between groups of people with very different schools of thought and, boom, before you know it your dumb joke about how Character B sucks arse is more viewed by the Character B fandom than the people who agree with you, and you’re drowning in people correcting you. Which is fine, on the small scale -- it’s a social site, this kind of thing is part of how it’s meant to function. But the more popular a post becomes, the more likely it’ll end up somewhere you hate, and the more likely the notifications from there will become unmanageable.
And third, the mere experience of receiving notifications on this site makes it harder to use, once you’ve reached a certain density. My favourite feature of Tumblr is definitely how bad the notification system is. This is its saving grace as a website, and the main reason, in my experience, that a post taking off sucks -- it’s designed fro low-to-moderate engagement, with absolutely no thought put into how it would function if engagement with one user becomes too high. It used to be ten times worse, back when notifications appeared on your main dash without any organisation but chronology and a post getting too popular would just result in a dashful of Tumblr messages telling you that someone reblogged it; the current notification system is better than that, but it still becomes nearly impossible to track engagement or watch post responses once a post becomes too popular and swamps your feed. Tumblr is like a highway -- it’s designed to do a thing, but the more activity it gets, the worse it is at doing that thing.
And this is its greatest fucking strength, because it’s our one defense against the chaotic Engagement Is All nonsense of the rest of the internet that makes their sites unusable unless you’re really popular. Thank you, Tumblr, and your terrible design. Never ever change.
I love this new trend of threatening to make a post get tons of notes.
The fear of going viral on this site is so at odds against the push to get your "15min of fame" on any other platform.
You don't want to be a household name on this site, you're sharing a podium with human pet guy for starters...

Okay I’m going to attempt the ranking of online people
1. Tumblr users. Akin to that Chernobyl Ant Colony, this is a mismatch of all different ages, but unlike other sites it’s hard to tell who’s what unless it’s common knowledge(it’s easy to tell who came from tiktok also. Y’all can say fuck here it’s okay). It also has algorithms that feel like they’re on the side of the people, and the ads here are weird enough to the point where I can’t be bothered by seeing them. I actively feel better being here.
2. Twitter users. I consider this place to be the tumblr of the main public, because the people here are almost just as unhinged as the people here. Actually they’re more unhinged as they get input from all generations, leading to some hilarious (and potentially disastrous) moments. However, since it’s the Publics Tumblr, that means your boss can find out what you post there. That loses points in my book.
3. Instagram users. Where I used to spend most of my time, I grew annoyed that whenever I wanted to post something I HAD to put an image with it. Also tumblr gives me what Instagram can’t: a site where my family can’t see me. Also it’s trying hard to TikTok-ify themselves and it’s getting annoying.
4. Facebook users. I know next to nothing about them and that works in their favor.
5. Reddit users. About equally disliked as amino, but a lot more diversity in fandoms and weirdly specific things.
6. Amino users. I used to be there for like half a year and it was basically Reddit but worse(idk I never liked anyone on there)
7. TikTok users. Despite existing since 2016, it is still inhabited by a lot of the younger generation and itself hasn’t really been interesting enough to get me to use it. Plus it definitely increased the amount of people playing music in public with no care as to who wants to hear it.
8. Snapchat users. I can’t understand how it works and it doesn’t look very fun, like TikTok for photos.
Tell me if I missed anything!
