Music I see as another way of enjoying poetry--what else are lyrics, after all? Fiction is somewhere I can get lost and experience things I've never gotten the chance to see or meet people I'll never meet. Paintings, like photographs, capture a singular moment, but also infuse their meaning with a more personal flavor from the artist's own life. Statues are this concrete, physical expression of being that capture movement and emotion and strength and weakness and just the general essence of existence in a very solid, real way. plzzzz don't make me choose :)

I definitely feel that way about some books that just destroyed me emotionally--same goes for films--but I also feel like, given enough time, I'd want to return to them to get a fresh perspective. Idk, I've definitely thought about this a lot, but a lot of types of media store cherished memories for me, so in returning to the media, I'm also reopening that treasure trove of my own life.

ivy ⇢ I smile a lot for no reason when I'm happy. I'm much more sarcastic when I'm down. I also tend to hold my hand up to my face when I'm anxious or annoyed. I feel like this is so much easier to determine about someone else, not yourself :)

papyrus ⇢ just went and did this for the sake of experimentation. the song that came up was "king" by florence and the machine. I love all of florence's songs, but i love "king" for so many reasons. The guttural vocals really bring something out in the lyrics (which are incredible on their own). Also the production of the music video (directed by one of my favorite people of all time, Autumn de Wilde--same person who directed Emma 2020) just makes the aesthetic of the music so much more....GRAND

spy headcanon thread! just some of my personal thoughts and musings about his character :-) enjoy!

starting off by saying that spy is Absolutely Everything to me.. i've put his thread off for so long because i have SO much to say and im afraid i'll leave stuff out BUT we're going to take a Stab at it (😏) and i guess i'll just add more stuff later if i need! As Usual this is just pasted from my twitter so i'm sorry for any wonky formatting issues!

the most important thing to me about spy's character is that it is Varied and can be Contradictory. i say this about all of the mercs tbh but spy is among the Most important given his role/occupation as a spy. he IS A Spy, but he's also Just Some Guy (gender neutral).

spy is a bit dry; very sarcastic, a bit stoic, but he's definitely not heartless. i think he's very "emotionally in-tune" to those around him and prides himself on being able to read a room exceptionally well!

... but just because he knows what people might be thinking doesn't mean he's going to do anything about it! he likes being in the know but seldom ever enjoys interfering; it's best if he keeps out of the fray, or so he tells himself!

that being said, i Do think spy makes exceptions to this rule (which To Me is what makes his character Interesting!).... as we see in expiration date! he spends his "last living days" helping scout become a worthy date for miss pauling!

if he sees someone Floundering or really stuck in some kind of emotional squander, he'll pass by with a hand on the shoulder and a concise, discreet, kind word of advice in their ear and move on. no need for thanks, he's just Sharing an Observation! if you try to thank him, he'll give you a coy look and be like "for what?" but he knows. he's just letting you know you don't need to thank him <3

loves breaking balls. he'll help you if you ask him, but not before he gives you a LOT of shit for it. he'll volunteer himself to help you (even if you tell him you need his Stinking Help!) and he'll roll his eyes and say "ha! you are So helpless! i know you're glad i'm here to see this through with you uUu" LOL

but he will give you genuine insight and Surprisingly Good advice. huh, you didn't know he knew you so well! despite his job as a spy, he'll tell you to be authentic and will encourage you to listen to your instincts.

is an Observer First and an Action-taker second. prioritizes being in the know and likes being in the background (despite how good he is at being in the spotlight!). always thinks before he speaks, very calculated in everything he does!

got wiser with age. when he was younger i think he was quick to save his own skin and thought only about himself. among his first "selfless" acts were running out on scout and his mom to "protect" them, but with the wisdom of hindsight, that wasn't the smartest idea!

firmly believes in the power of respect. seems to have a positive relationship with all of his teammates (yes, even sniper, engineer and pyro lol) and scout's mom, too (regardless of how u see their relationship). tells scout that he has to earn pauling's respect to be worthy of her!

won't hesitate to stick his neck out for/work with people he appreciates. in the comics, he works with (and even prioritizes the safety of) miss pauling, helps sniper, and obviously comforts scout when he's dying in the way that Scout would want to be comforted. good job pops!

which brings me to dadspy... how i love you... i could make an entire other thread about my dadspy thoughts BUT i'll keep it "brief" here. i don't think he ever "treated scout like shit" nor do i think he was abusive to scout's mom or scout. he's just the world's most mediocre absent father to me... KDSKF

i think scout's mom knew What Spy Was and knew that at some point, he'd have to leave her. i think she's a perfectly capable woman who spy is genuinely still in love with (they have an open, long-distance relationship!) and is quite the deadly catch herself! perhaps i'll make a thread on her if that's something people would want....

i don't think she resents spy for running out and i think spy has complicated feelings about running out. he's convinced himself he did it for everyone involved's safety but in hindsight he Does feel a Bit (emphasis on Bit. it's not Earth Shatteringly Dramatic, just a little demon that sneaks up on him now and then...) guilty and tries to "make up for it" by Trying to get along with scout even if it's... not easy LOL. him turning into tom jones when scout died was to comfort scout the way Scout would want, which i think says a lot about spy's character.

however, once scout finds out the truth, i think he tells spy that he shouldn't have lied to him about it ("what kind of dumbass lies to their son on his deathbed! 🧍") and spy's like "ah... i suppose that... was also a mistake." and they smirk/smile at each other.. Road To Forgiveness begins..

also i personally love the running gag that everyone knows that spy is scout's dad (except for scout), not because i think spy would tell all/even some of the mercs but because it's SO obvious that all of them are like "i mean yeah.. doy". extra points if their knowledge Also surprises spy. "WHO TOLD YOU? HOW DID YOU KNOW?!" and the mercs are like ??? "erm... we have eyes...?" LOL

DESPITE being Stoic and Unknowable and Mysterious, he is also Quite the Doofus. one of my favorite and most important thoughts on his character. i think his authentic laugh is his snort laugh and i think that's what made scout's mom fall in love with him... :') has a great sense of humor.

loves playing pranks, causing mischief and being a Smug Cunt. will hide behind his Carefully Crafted Facade, but those who really know him (heavy, scout's mom) can see right through it! teaches scout some of his "best ones" (though not before pranking HIM with them first! it's okay though. scout's a good sport and gives him props LMAO)

a short list of spy's "best ones":

cleaning a glass door REALLY well and tricking the mercs to run into it at full force

oil on the kitchen floor so that anyone who comes running in will slam into the oven that engineer Just Fixed God Dammit! and destroy it

mentos in soda

scout and spy have the "same laugh" when they REALLY start howling. snorting, wheezing.... they sound almost identical. usually if they're laughing THAT hard, the rest of the mercs are looking at them like this >__> (covered in soda, can't get up from the ground because oil, etc)

obviously enjoys literature! language is one of his favorite things, though. loves learning about different dialects, slang, accents and learning the intricacies of grammar, too! likes studying the other mercs for this reason. the base is a fun, mixed bag for him!

the best secret keeper. contrary to popular belief, spy will NOT air your business if it's Serious. he might "let it slip" to medic that sniper sleeps with a stuffed animal, but he won't let anyone know that heavy has ptsd. he likes giving people shit, but not genuinely causing harm!

ah.. breaking balls as a love language.. this is something that i think is shared between spy, scout, and scout's mom. they LOOOOVE to give you shit, but it comes from a loving place. i think a lot of scout and spy's banter in exp date is like this:

it's not actually Insulting to either of them (spy calling scout a failure, scout telling spy to go to hell, etc) and is in fact more like a thing of Endearment. if you know people like this then you know what i'm talking about. idk how else to describe it KSDFKS

he is very girlfailure that thinks he's a girlboss but is actually a girlfailure and is coming to terms with his girlfailing. as i've said, spy isn't heartless. he knows he's made mistakes and knows his job has costed him a lot and now he's trying to reconcile with it. sometimes it's funny, sometimes its angsty!

is a total foodie and has a LOT of opinions about all kinds of cuisine! loves cooking with engineer and pyro (YES i think pyro is an INCREDIBLE chef. they only burn things because it's fun/funny! for the bit. you understand), and heavy has a perfect palette (just a personal hc of mine heh) so he always gets to tag along and taste test! <3

if spy is involved with any of the other mercs, scout's mom knows about it. they're in an open relationship and spy values her just like he'd value any of the mercs in a romantic relationship. she knows all of them and they're all very polite to her (ala like they are with miss pauling), but she quickly surprises them by being snarky and playful like spy and scout! she also doesn't hesitate to begin telling the mercs the most Humiliating Dirt on spy AND scout! HEHEHE

i don't think he'd cheat on her nor do i think he'd bother cheating on any of his partners. he's very open with communication when it comes to his interpersonal relationships (this is ironic to everyone but him because his relationship with his son is currently in shambles). he's good at it when it comes to romantic relationships though!

his love languages are, well, any and all of them! he loves being in love, he's a huge romantic and is not shy about showing it. will absolutely DROWN his partner in gifts and pretty words (that he really does mean!) and so on... perhaps to the point of it being a little overwhelming! at his partner's request, he'll dial it back... but he still loves to spoil his lovers, and THAT is something he WON'T apologize for! >:)

as i touched on earlier, has a good rapport with all of the mercs and pauling. he's patient with soldier and the other mercs hear him out about the bucket list idea (and are all Quietly Amused by how scout promptly ruins that for him. team dynamic ykwim). i think he's the closest with heavy (i'm a spoovy enjoyer), engineer, pyro, and sniper (BUT in kind of a "unique" way. perhaps i'll elaborate) but he enjoys the company of all of the other mercs as well!

is Informed about engineer's, demoman's and medic's research (though not on the levels they are of course) and likes being in the know about things going on around the base. he mostly shares enemy intelligence with these three over anyone else. they talk frequently and Love to gossip (engineer SWEARS its not gossiping but demo and medic are like "no. its gossip!" SKDFKSDF)!

will absolutely always enable you to treat yourself. scout, spy, medic and demo are the KINGS of "go on!! treat yourself!! :D" no matter what it is. if spy sees you really struggling about whether to get something, he'll slip it in with his own purchases and gift it to you later. "this one is from me, so you don't need to worry about compromise. <3"

in battle, he's a bit more sadistic than his teammates; likes making people squirm and is more than capable of getting under your skin. information extraction is part of his job and he treats it as such: Part Of The Job. he doesn't get a LOT of pleasure from hurting others, but he Does enjoy starring in a good revenge tale!

no, i do NOT think the world's most absent father cares about his 30 year old son's sex life nor do i think he's even "fiercely overprotective" of scout just in general. i think he knows scout is a grown man who has to make (and account for) any failures and fumbles he makes in his life. he'll be there with a kind word (and a few snarky ones!) when shit hits the fan, but he's not running around fighting scout's battles for him. scout loves battling too much to let him anyway! LOL

he teaches him things that Spy Himself values (like respect) because he... values it and since spy IS trying to be a bit more of a Dad to scout, it's also a reflection on him (to spy. scout doesn't care or think of it that way). insists on the value of self improvement! (something he himself didn't learn until he was Much Older... but scout doesn't need to know that!)

The thing about that Winter thing, just to remind, from her POV she killed James. The last she saw of him was was her making him explode. From her perspective she is the one who killed that guy. And she is not very Brocken up about it.

Its amusing because they give Adam more sympathy then this. Blake literally broke down sobbing after killing him and even the triumphant song they released had a note about how sad Adam's story was and how this boy lost his way being consumed by hate and spite.

It was not alot, but like...its more then they give Jimmy LOL.

Pretty sure I got this ask when we all thought Winter was writing on Ironwood's grave, but regardless...

Yeeeah.

Something I've been thinking about lately is how Ironwood is the one villain who is still irrevocably against Salem and how that should have made such a difference, but didn't. Even Adam, whose story-line became 99% about his abusive relationship with Blake, was working with Cinder earlier on who, in turn, was working for Salem. Every major villain in the show (that I can think of off the top of my head, anyway) did something to forward Salem's agenda: Cinder, Watts, Tyrian, Hazel, Emerald, Raven, Adam, Roman. That consistency means that although I might often side-eye the heroes' inability to forgive (or hypocritically forgive on a dime) it at least makes sense that they would look at someone like Lionheart, someone who was helping Salem end the world, and dismiss any goodness within them.

Ironwood, in contrast, was working against Salem up until the moment he died.

Did the writers give him a senseless, fucked-up means of moving against Salem via a 'just bomb civilians' plan? Yes and I'll forever side-eye that too. However, I think if the heroes should have forgiveness/sympathy/mixed feelings/an emotional reaction to any villain, it should be the one whose villains acts were all in the name of stopping their shared enemy. In debating the ethical and practical merits of Ironwood's plans, I think many fans have lost sight of the larger picture. He's trying to get the Relics away from Salem, keep their last army of huntsmen in reserve to fight Salem later, get at least one city of people safely away from Salem. No matter how messed up, no matter how misguided and OOC there wasn't a single thing Ironwood did that wasn't guided by his attempts to keep Salem from ending the world. In a better written show, that would have meant something. Even if we still had to get cartoon villain Ironwood, the characters would at least acknowledge that he (from the show's POV) did all the wrong things for the right reasons. Winter in particular was set up to be that nuanced insight, given his mentor-esque status and her unfailing faith in 99% of the choices Ironwood made. That the show would have her (from her POV) kill him and then just sneer at how she waited too long to do it is insane. Please write these characters humanely! Even if you come to hate someone for what they've done, years worth of love for them doesn't just up and disappear!! That's the one (1) snow scene moment RWBY got completely right: of course Ozpin is still going to care for Lionheart despite his betrayal.

For me, intent will always matter. It might not excuse everything (or anything at all), but it opens the door for forgiveness in a way that few other things will. Which is why the intent of other characters, in contrast, makes Ironwood's writing so much worse. You have Qrow teaming up with Tyrian because he refuses to go see Ironwood in handcuffs and Emerald who is "redeemed" because she was literally just standing beside Oscar post-realization that Cinder doesn't love her. The show says, "You're forgiven for being so stubborn you'll deliberately help kill your friend" and the characters say "You're forgiven for trying to end the world/destroying a school and then stopping out of selfish self-interest." But there's no "You're forgiven for taking extreme measures in a no-win scenario in an effort to salvage some hope against an immortal enemy." That's messed up to me! Especially given that Ironwood is (presumably) dead. If there's ever a time to let characters extend compassion in a way they may not be able to with the person still there and potentially still enacting wrong, it's when they've died for those heroic beliefs. Ironwood is the one villain who, methods aside, was 100% fighting the right battle and he's simultaneously the one villain that characters and story alike refuse to give even a smidge of sympathy for. Wild.

Strix and Dema talk reluctant heroes, DA4 (spoilers ahead!) and ALL the worldstates

Dema: To jump right in, on your user intro you mentioned OC creation first in your list of things you love about Dragon Age. What about DA OC creation in particular appeals to you?

Strix: I love the choice of it all. I get the opportunity to craft rich, multi-faceted characters within a deeply immersive world that I love and see everyone else's amazing creations too. I have endless possibilities for creative expression and storytelling and ways to explore personalities, choices and experiences that I don't have personal experience in, and on the flip side I get to explore characteristics that I have in so many different ways. I also love learning about how others approach the same thing and there is always so much diversity in how it is approached.

Dema: Do you create your OCs with writing in mind?

Strix: Not necessarily. I have several that were created with writing in mind, but the majority were created with the idea of exploring the world of dragon age from a particular lens and what that would mean for how they would interact with the world.

Dema: What has been the most interesting character configuration for you, in game? 

Strix: I find it really hard to pick just one. However, I will say I really love any non mage Hawke. They're just a regular guy and because of the tensions between the mages and templars and between their friends, they're always kind of stuck in the middle. I find it's an interesting dynamic because in the end they always have to take a stance, regardless of personal feelings, investment in the mage or templar cause, or the risk to themselves. 

Dema: Do you have a favorite Hawke you've made? (Cruel question, I know haha)

Strix: Hahaha, it really is lol. But I would have to say my canon Hawke. Aeryn Hawke is a dual wielding rogue and purple Hawke. She just wanted to live an uneventful and simple life, but fate had other ideas.

Dema: I LOVE a reluctant hero.

Strix: She's become a bit of a tragic figure as the DA timeline and story has progressed and I'm honestly terrified of Varric dying in da4 because that would honestly be the thing that breaks her. She can't and hasn't saved the world, all she's done is hold back the tide a little bit.

Dema: OOF, yeah! So I assume you're keeping up with the DA4 news to some extent?

Strix: Absolutely! I'm obsessively following all the updates. I have no care for spoilers. 

Dema: What are you most excited about?

Strix: Meeting all the new companions. I have loved all the past companions and I'm so excited to meet all my new friends and LIs. Through a chance to punch Solas is a close second.

Dema: Are you already planning your Rook, or are you waiting?

Strix: I've got plans for at least five already, lol. I have 13 completed world states and uhhhh an addiction to OC creation.

Dema: Hey. You are so valid. Who knows how long we'll have this game before the next one comes out, if we've got a decade surely five play-throughs is reasonable.

Strix: I'm so scared I'm going to create more than 13 Rooks and then I'll have to create wardens, Hawke's and Inquisitors to match them. The backgrounds sound so intriguing.

Strix: My pitch will be in tomorrow, I've been working on it today (blurbs/summaries kill me lol) But I'm super excited about DABB! I can't wait to read all the fics and see all the paired art, it is such a fun concept. I'm also super excited to finally be writing my fic, because it's a fic I've wanted to write for ages now, and the way the DABB has been structured has really helped me kick my ass into gear to tackle the project. I love fandom events and gift exchanges because of the commitment component. You've signed up, you have a deadline and you have to think about how and if you can deliver the project, which means it isn't as self indulgent as regular fic writing is (for me anyway).

Jack & Lyorna

Flustered/Shy One - Jack. Despite being very extroverted and outspoken, Jack is incredibly awkward and shy when it comes to matters of romance. It is partly due to the fact that he is a strongly sex-repulsed asexual who feels too uncomfortable to try and flirt, but also because his self-esteem isn't the best so he doesn't even consider himself flirting with someone as a plausible course of action. He is also, despite his adventurous lifestyle, completely inexperienced (not naive though, he probably knows more than he should lol) when it comes to matters of sex and romance.

Flirty One - Lyorna. But in like a sweet and endearing way. She is aware of Jack's shyness when it comes to flirting and romance, and so her "flirts" with him are generally on the more wholesome, cutesy side, y'know. Like, she loves showing him that she appreciates the things he does and always tries to lift up his self-esteem when she can through subtle ways, so her flirting mostly comes through as a supportive friendship with romantic moments, and Jack rather likes it as it is, even though he was initially clueless to her advances at first. Now, he has gotten to the point where he himself engages in this form of "flirting" with Lyorna, something he would have never have considered possible.

Flustered/Shy One - Both (most of the time). Both Deimos and Vesper are pretty emotionally stunted young adults with painfully introverted personalities who often come across as either too harsh, awkward, or strange to strangers. When they first met and had to work together, they weren't even friends, they had a rivalry (like, "I don't like you cause I don't want to" type of rivalry), but begrudgingly realized they had started to care for each other and had no idea what to do with that information for a long, long while lol.

Flirty One - Vesper (on rare occasions lol). She was the first one to verbalize/act out her feelings towards Deimos, though her first attempt was pretty harsh/unromantic (it was very much a "shut up you idiot I fucking love you!" moment, because she hadn't meant to say it, and he didn't know how to react cause he realized he felt like that too). After that she was also the first one to try and be a bit more flirty, though both of them continued equally awkward in their own ways.

Flustered/Shy One - Noctus. He is very much a serious, "by the book" secret agent who has spent his entire life (that he remembers of) following orders and being the Junction's perfect soldier. He had never considered love and romance as a factor he desired in his life, and when he first met Aleks he considered the bubbly troublemaker as unbearable, but grumpily found himself falling for him regardless. And later, much to his own surprise, found himself breaking protocol for the first time in his life in order to side with and save the love of his life and his friends.

Flirty One - Aleks. He is a very forward, funny kind of guy who is rather vocal about his feelings. Being a "prankster" type, Aleks is more than definitely the kind of young adult who makes suggestive jokes that often come across as the stupidest things in the world (deez nuts kind of jokes, for reference). This is part of the reason why the secret agent was often so exasperated by him and found him so insufferable. Aleks made his attraction to Noctus pretty clear from week one, though initially, he was actually just joking with the "uptight secret agent babysitting the crew" but later found himself actually meaning it.

Pax & Tarah

Flustered/Shy One - Pax. He is a young space cadet who has never dated before in his life and though he is very much up for "breaking the rules" and getting into trouble, Pax is also very much not ready for the level of recklessness and sheer dangerous excitement Gabi has to offer, which makes some of their interactions pretty interesting. Pax does try to be flirty on occasion but those attempts mostly come across as endearingly awkward.

Flirty One -Tarah. She is a very blunt, "speak things as they are" kind of girl, having been raised to be no-nonsense and generally direct. Though her attempts at flirting were initially as awkward as Pax's she quickly got better at it and now is the most forwardly romantic one of the duo - she also is the one who has the most "date ideas", though those ideas often involve at least some form of danger for her to consider them "thrilling enough" lol.

Notes: Yes, that's actually the title; no, I don't regret it. It's been a while since I played Obey Me. I found that I couldn't juggle more than three mobile games lol the daily log in already exhausts me haha. I still have it installed so someday I'll probably play it again.

So like, in this AU, the brothers sans Satan go to the human world for some reason and they turned into kittens because they broke the law or something. You found them all sad and pathetic and so you brought them into your home to take care of them. They got attached to you like barnacles. Satan goes up to find his brothers but gets distracted by a curious little bookshop.

You're a part-time employee at Simeon's bookstore and a full-time grad student. At first you just find this blond green-eyed customer cute; he likes mystery genres too much. But then one day, he buys Howl's Moving Castle and all of a sudden you're in love.

At the mystery/thriller aisle, Simeon ticked his checklist and smiled without glancing your way.

You flinched a bit from his question, thinking about your life choices when it came to spending your savings. “Would you believe me if I said I keep an eye on sales and discounts? There are always monthly promos on this site that I frequent …”

Simeon frowned, before moving on to the romance section. “You’re buying books online?”

Oh, no. “I, ah. I mean.” What to say, what to say. “I could buy books here …”

From the bookshelves to your left, Simeon emerged, notepad under his arm, disappointment radiating from every pore of his body. You had no problems with offending people, unwittingly or otherwise, but there was something about Simeon that compelled you to avoid making him all sad and disappointed. The first time you had met him, in your interview for the part-time job, he reminded you of your grandma, all kind smile and cotton-soft voice. But that was before you discovered that he could give an impressive dressing down worthy of a ten-minute standing ovation—which you actually did, much to his chagrin.

Regardless of whether he’s kind or snarky, you just didn’t want to let him down.

Simeon sighed, already used to your impulses. “Have you even read them all?”

“Yes!” A beat. “Well, no.” Another beat. “I mean, I’m more than halfway through—”

“You should refrain from buying books for a while.”

“But think about the discounts.”

Simeon’s brows dipped and his mouth opened—most likely to give a sermon about the virtues of saving money—but whatever he was going to say was cut off by the sudden tinkling of the door chime, signalling a customer.

“I need to sort the newly arrived books; you handle this.” And with a last cursory look at the romance aisle, Simeon headed off to the storage room.

You return to your spot by the cash register, your eyes homing in on the person who entered. Tall, blond, and had a weird way of wearing his jacket. He looked at home surrounded by books, sifting through fantasy, sci-fi, romance, then lingering on the mystery section. At this point you would have asked if he needed assistance, but your preoccupation with your new batch of ordered books held you at bay. If he wanted to inquire about something, he would approach you anyway.

Minutes later, in the middle of mentally listing your storeroom options, Sherlock Holmes materialized in your line of vision.

You looked up, and all the cells in your body halted for one dazzling second.

Huh.

You would’ve tilted your head and stared some more, but work came first.

“Is this all?” you asked, your finger tapping the book.

Across the counter, the customer offered a friendly smile, nodding, his striking green eyes reminding you of summer foliage. “Yeah.”

For some reason you couldn’t reciprocate the smile. “Right.”

When Simeon came back to check up on you, he found you staring at the window in a daze.

“Did something happen?”

“Not really,” you answered, voice slightly dreamy. Then you turned to Simeon, and your lips stretched into a grin. “I’m feeling productive today. I think I can solve my storage problem and my dissertation problem.”

Needless to say, you were right on the money.

quite honestly i consider this one of the biggest honors...... the fact that you consider my writing good enough to hear my opinion on the canon characters just makes me go insane.

okay so let's get to it! i'm gonna go on a brain-vomit here so sorry in advance if it's all over the place and doesn't make sense, i'll try to keep it as concise and logical as possible. also this is all just my opinion and interpretation of their relationship so it's completely okay if you don't agree with me!

i think it's clear to anyone who has read the book that raskolnikov and razumikhin's relationship stands and falls completely on razumikhin's will to stay by rodya's side. his deep-rooted belief in the inherent good of people (and therefore of raskolnikov) is what perpetually keeps him in the story. there's this certain air of all-consuming hopefulness and refusal to give up following razumikhin all throughout the book that cements him as a stand-out among the calculated, always-looking-for-the-worst-in-others characters of the novel (such as raskolnikov, porfiriy, svidrigailov as so on). he stays despite rodion's repeated attempts at pushing him away, despite outright TELLING him to go away simply because raskolnikov doesn't find himself worthy of such tenderness and patience from another person - herein lies their core difference in my opinion. where rodya believes a person must DESERVE their place in the world, there dmitri accepts it as it is - we are here because we are and that's it. this is further proven in the way rodya tries to constantly find a reason behind his existence and in the way he begs his mother's forgiveness in a scene that, at first glance, eludes to the murder, but i believe it goes deeper. i believe he seeks her forgiveness for his very existence.

i think their relationship shines the clearest in two specific moments - first, when dmitri takes care of rodya when the latter's bed-ridden and second, when dmitri stands for rodya's innocence regardless of proof for or against him. and, well, as much as i would like to interpret their relationship as purely platonic - and i think you could, because you can always use the argument of them loving each other as brothers - i can't help but feel much more beyond that. there is a certain tenderness to their scenes, this head-strong determination in razumikhin's refusal to give up on raskolnikov even once rodya confesses to the murder, the way he's just always there, the way he leaves the party for him, the way he gets him a doctor, that's just absent in any other character. it's as if razumikhin lacked this critical thinking of rodya, something that dunya for instance is way too capable of. both love him deeply but dunya is able to see his flaws - mitya doesn't seem to. (and if he does, he tries not to). whether romantic or platonic, it's an infatuation. many analyses of the book describe their respective characters as "foils" to each other but i've never been strong on that. i mean, i can see where they are coming from, but i don't think razumikhin is raskolnikov's opposite. he is his admirer, in my eyes, the same way raskolnikov is his. in a way i think they want to be each other as much as they idolize each other. they are both untouchable in the other's eyes. (that's also what i've tried to convey in that fic of mine - rodya believing he's not good enough for dmitri, and dmitri feeling like rodya is miles out of his league - it all comes down to the nearly-otherworldly adoration of one another)

i have so much more to say but i already feel like i've written too much. if you or anybody else would be interested in hearing more on this topic, i could put it in a google doc and share it because i don't want to spam anyone's dash lol. just let me know!

So what about Dragon Quest Monsters? One of my favorite series.... if you consider being obsessed with 2.5 gameboy games and wanting to try all the others "favorite" material :P

So Joker was "fine". It wasn't my favorite by any means- most of the changes from 1-2 were "meh" to me, but I did enjoy it enough to complete it with a pretty decent amount of fun being had.

Joker 2's intro got me hyped! It really felt like something I'll love!

So how about instead of playing Joker 2 as I logically would- I go backwards a little and play Caravan Hearts instead lmao

I know very little about Caravan Hearts, as I've hinted at before on the blog (if you count mentioning it in passing like 4 years ago).

I "Think" it's one of those games I booted up in the early 2000s when emulation started getting more popular, in japanese of course being a japan exclusive and all, but I could be mixing it up with me booting up FF legends and the like.

The most I know is that a fellow DWM enjoyer said it was crap many years ago when I was playing some DWM stuff on the blog, and I took that to mean it's "probably" experimental and easy to dislike lol

Starting it up I'll say I'll be playing the fan translation, obviously, from kaioshin on Romhacking dot net. Any "funny business" in dialogue or re-interpretations of events is because it's a fan translation and I will be experiencing it as it is here, not as the original text defines the game because they never bothered to tell us this tale in english and I'm dumb and can't read the OG lol

Basic intro, we're a kid (10 years old) who craves adventure. Instead of being native to a monster world (2) or coming here because our sibling was kidnapped to be a monster master (1) we come to the monster world to escape punishment from our father- the king- after trying to escape the castle to explore the (reportedly) very tiny world we live in.

Basically we're a bored prince who craves adventure, and we stumbled into an opportunity to do that while hiding in our cabinet... a fun nod to DWM1 :3

Yada yada, in the monster world now, oh look a caravan lacking a leader:

What a coincidence, we just magically appeared here and listening to kids in RPG settings is normal as hell.

So right out the gate things DO appear rather different from the prior DWM games I love.

The caravan is key to combat for one, and our team appears to be entirely shaken up from how the prior games played it.

Instead of befriending and capturing 3 monsters to make a team and splitting up responsibilities among those 3 monsters for cohesive RPG party stuff- it /appears/ that we will always have ONE monster who takes the main stage for combat (kind of like DQ1?) and the caravan plays the role of... equipment? Passives? I guess you'd call them?

You have various adventurers in the party who don't directly participate but instead act as assistant abilities during combat- I am too early in to know how deep or how much control I have just yet, but I can pick what order they appear and from how the first encounters went it APPEARS as if the order determines when they get a turn to assist (if applicable), MAYBE.

Regardless it means I have a warrior who can swing an extra time for some more damage, a cleric who can heal if their "turn" comes up and we need it, and a map expert who can buff(?) our speed during his turn and also gives us the passive ability to use the map on the overworld.

This, could be neat.

It could also feel like a less hands on version of a combat system that was already kinda hands off since I'm only leveling up 1 party member and the other party members are not /real/ and instead are just passives that happen based on order (I think).

Hm. Looking forward to finding out!

I need to say that I love your writing, I would like to ask..how do you think will Xelef confess to the Crown? And if he will be the one who will confess first.

Awww, Thank you so much! It's been a hot minute since I've written anything- especially ATOC. At the moment I have negative interest in anything but Baldur's Gate 3 so all my writing time is being burned up romancing all the companions and racking up hours in the game.

I don't know if this is a request for writing like a fic or hc, but to avoid leaving it hanging, I'll just ramble a bit- try to paint a picture or two for you, anon. (Hopefully, it'll suffice lol)

Considering how the game is set up, whether X confesses or the Crown would probably depend entirely on how forward the Crown is. Although I wouldn't rule out there being a choice to make with variants based on personality.

If X were to confess though, I'd imagine it could easily go a hundred different ways. However, there are a few scenarios in particular that really squeeze at my heart.

Though grand gestures seem to be right up X's alley, my personal favorite parts of their route have always been those intimate moments where it's just the two of them. A simple mercenary and Crown. Whether it's brushing a touch up their neck or a simple "good night" traded across a tent- those bits hold more meaning to me personally as a reader.

So just shut out the world and imagine the Crown and X doing the same. Time slows to a crawl as gold and green softened gazes get lost in each other. Words are spoken in the softest tones, whispers only mean for the Crown's ears alone and X's in return. A hand cupping a cheek with the utmost care- as if the slightest wrong move would shatter the moment between the two. Foreheads press and then the world itself freezes. It just stops- for what probably feels like an eternity. An impasse for both of them, one last chance for either of them to back out.

But they don't.

Be it a slow and gentle kiss, or one of passion and fervor, X is most certainly going to leave the Crown breathless. There's no doubt about that. But afterward? I could certainly imagine them picking the Crown up or at the very least, pulling them into a tight embrace. There'd be laughter, a way to ease the built-up tension and transition them back to reality. Only this time, side by side in a way they haven't been before.

Another alternative scenario is one of my personal favorite tropes- the kind of confession that's desperate and needy. A confession spurred by the brush of death, the very real idea of never being able to articulate one's feelings and almost losing someone you may never have even considered losable seared in one's mind.

I mean, the Crown has already survived many attempts on their life and made it so far with a small squadron of guards around them at all times. And X is a peerless mercenary of great renown and skill who's been through hundreds of battles. The very idea of the other dying probably isn't a notion either would want to entertain for too long either.

Regardless of who's hurt. At first, there would be plenty of other people around, concerned allies and friends alike checking on Crown or X- the bustle of activity sparing the both of them from their whirlwind of emotions and thoughts... at least for the moment.

But then one by one they leave.

And now the two are alone.

Maybe there's a small joke to lighten the mood. Maybe not.

Either way, I love the imagery of bandaged hands clasped around the hands of another, the grip and squeeze given weak, but reassuring nevertheless.

One voices their concern, their wish- a demand more like- for the other to get better. The words bring a small smile to the other, repressed or otherwise.

This confession in particular could be a completely wordless one- the affection found in a look or an action rather than whatever flowery language could be traded in the moment. It's not a confession I think would get an answer immediately- nor would I want it to.

I much prefer for whoever's injuried to see the blossoms of love in those small, almost benign actions. To see it in the amount of worry pulling at their would-be partner's expression. To see how the relief from seeing them alright lifting the metephorical weight from their shoulders.

And then they leave, leaving the injured one to their thoughts and the daunting task of reeling their heart back to normal.

Perhaps it's less of a "confession" as the first example, but it's one I enjoyed considering immensely.

Hey! Agree that erasure sucks big time. As a lesbian, I very often see that devs make every character in a game bi, with no lesbian rep at all. That puts me in a difficult situation when I want to respect bi people but also want to have rep of my own. :(

Though I admit, I can kind of read a bit of a tongue-in-cheek comment into this message (which could just be me feeling defensive in general over this topic, I'm fully aware that I am and definitely mean no ill will towards you), but I'll take you at face value on this and assume you meant no ill will either lol.

Honestly, I'll definitely always agree that there need to be more canonically queer characters and experiences portrayed of every orientation and gender, only I'd definitely argue that bisexuality specifically is kind of in a unique position where it's... it's so often used purely as a game mechanic that, despite its theoretical existence in a narrative, it can often, and to many players, not even be interpretable as any sort of real representation either. Especially with how many games, past and present, kind of conceal their characters' queerness behind the players' intentions to seek it out (basically treating them as "straight until proven gay"), which often implies monosexuality (at the lack of a better term) in the text regardless of the existence of another mechanic, even if the character could technically be considered bisexual.

There is a very clear difference in my mind (and in the minds of -as far as I can tell- the majority of other bisexual players) between characters being canonically bi, and them being mechanically bi, in that in that the latter case, you can often play and engage with, or even romance characters without ever needing to acknowledge them as anything other than monosexual (again, lacking a better concise term) in a way that happens to coincide with your PC's sexuality. They can be seen as gay if you're the same sex, and as straight if you're not. But in BG3 specifically, even though the dialogue with the player themselves doesn't really seem to address the companions' sexuality head-on (you can't, like, walk up to Wyll and ask him "so, hey man, what's, like, your.... whole deal, or whatever?", you have to listen to him and connect the dots), it IS really nice, and a nice change of pace that this is not a thing. That no queer content is hidden behind "the gay button", that you aren't limited to being exposed to their queerness while in a romance with them, and that you cannot, literally cannot, play the game in a way that would make the world less queer, or make it seem like the characters are merely adapting to the gender of the player character.

Because they all hit on-, or express attraction to at least a few others regardless of gender, without it immediately implying anything beyond them all just... being attracted to people of different genders.

I watched this slightly older video essay by verilybitchie just a little while ago that went into this exact thing in a lot more detail, and I honestly recommend it to everyone. Since the video is two years old now, she of course doesn't address BG3 specifically (I'd love to hear her thoughts on it though! the end note where she talks about how excited she is for what might be coming next really warmed my heart!), but otherwise it's a good runthrough of my thoughts and experiences on- and with the issue as well.

(And, to be honest.... as a side note, romancing a bi character is.... still respectful, if you play your own character as monosexual? Like I do that all the time too, so that part of your message... kind of confused me?

Like... the only way romancing, say, Karlach for example as a woman can be considered in any way disrespectful to us bi people, is if you play that in an angle that erases her bisexuality, simply because she happens to be in a same-sex romance in your game. But that's less an issue of representation in the game itself imo, and more just... this strictly theoretical player themselves being at least a little bit biphobic and erasing her sexuality based on the gender of her partner, even if that isn't their intention.)

Ok, something that's been on my mind, and I wanted to pick your professional brain, so to speak. We're thinking about storytelling and medium. Is there a quest in Skyrim/TES that you've played and immediately thought "this would be so much better as a novelization, this medium does not fit the story at all," and if so, what quest was it and why? And if you were to novelize it, what would you do to it, specifically? The only rule is that it can't be the main quest ;)

I love this question because my silly little mind has a thousand fragments of a hundred WIPs clattering around in there and a lot of them are derived from just such a question while playing TES in general and of course, specifically Skyrim.

We know I'm handling more or less a novelization of the main quest LOL I mean the fic is a book at this point. I do have two others that would be exceedingly fun to write a longfic for though. I don't know about taking either of these as canon as they are (due to medium limitations) but my goodness, would they be a whirlwind to rework. I'm up to the task though. I've narrowed it down to one for this answer, as the other might be more of a mediumfic, lol.

I think an idea I'd tackle is going to be focused around the Dawnguard questline, but it's not quite a direct sequel. It'll overlap a bit with the flash forward timeline in World. Even saying this might be a spoiler but it's entirely without context so I'll risk it. Anyway... I'd say it'll be a piece of a series which, while World will give more insight into, can be standalone more or less.

Why this quest and what would I change? Well. It's got the skeleton of a good vampire story but TES kind of...flails about with it. Nothing about the Tyranny of the Sun makes any damned sense ecologically speaking. (No sun means no plants which means no animals which means no people means nothing for vampires to eat either, to super simplify.) Serana has quite a lot of personality and I'd like to explore her character a bit more. I want the villain to be unhinged for reasons other than he's just unhinged for the sake of it. I want more history and higher stakes. The whole idea of the soul cairn has always creeeeeped me right the heck out and I'd love to explore that further. I think it lends itself well to novelization (or becoming a longfic in my case) because of the structure of the thing. It goes through the traditional rising action, turning point, denouement situation even if there are details absolutely lacking and characterization has fallen rather flat. Having it be a book rather than a DLC would have given these ideas more room to breathe, I think. But I get it. The DLC itself was kind of fun even if the story was a little sparse. And as I mentioned, we love Serana here. (:

How I'd handle it? Well I'm going to be giving the perspective chapters to two or three individuals. I haven't quite decided on the third one yet. It depends on a few factors. But at least two. One's an OC and the others are NPCs. Teldryn and Nyenna would only have bit parts in this narrative as most of it will be occurring maybe concurrently with the main quest a bit, so she'd be busy while these non-LDBs are off doing hero things. There will be a thread in World that leads off to this specific spinoff sequel thing too, as I tend to do to tie things together.

I still have a lot of work on World, and I thing I'm queueing Ondolemar's story up next. BUT I might be able to work on fragments for this sometimes in between. (: No guarantees of course...but it'll be a fun time regardless. So this answer was a bit rambly, but it did give me a minute to talk about another idea of mine and I am eternally grateful for the question :D

sweetie. sweaty. honey. I only think about this maaaybe once a day. And that's not that hyperbolic. I mean you really said it all--They are literally BONDED across the chasm of reality itself. We can all speculate whether it's from the paopu fruit (as I think) or just The Power of Love™️, but regardless it's beyond romantic. And it was when she needed him. She needed him, and he was there. Whenever she needs him, he never lets her down, literally using himself (projected on to her I guess?) as a shield. I have no hands here, so let me use yours, I'll give you my keyblade, I'll give you my strength. Even when I'm in unreality you are not allowed to mess with Kairi. How many times must I teach you this lesson old man?

I do think what you pointed out about it happening when they're both sleeping is really interesting. There is a wonderful symmetry to it, dreaming of each other, reaching for each other--in a world without you, i'll dream of you, right? It seems that's how Yozora reaches Sora too, and possibly riku, given the endings of Remind and kh3? some very weird jumbling of memory and dream going on here. It reminds me a bit of CoM, where Sora is put to sleep in order to unscramble his memories. The concepts of dream and memory and sleep are often found together in kh. once nomura puts you to sleep, no telling what weird shit's going to happen to you lol. oh the sweet sweet torment of kh mysteries.

And iirc from a nomura interview from after the trailer drop it seems Sora was asleep from the time between kh3/remind and this moment of waking in the kh4 trailer, and that he was asleep for seven days (because of course he was). So either a week in unreality is a year in kh time, or there's even zanier time shenanigans at play. It could just be a way to quickly handwave over the intervening time, so they might gloss over all of this, but I really do hope they'll show us or describe to us the MoM scene from Sora's POV (and also how/when he got changed into his new 'fit lol). I wrote that mini fic on the MoM scene because it's so fascinating to me. He just knew. She must have been calling out to him, and he knew. How did he know she needed him? How did he get to her? I have to lie facedown now.

The fact that Kairi thanked Sora at the end, to me at least, (and im not a sap nor am i biased in any way) says that it was actually Sora, not her own imagining of him. But it does present this interesting idea if it is some sort of self creation--that in a moment of weakness, again her own demons, when she needs strength and courage, when she feels she's not enough, she thinks of sora, and that gives her that courage and strength. I mean, who does she know that's defeated Xehanort? (If you can't get Sora himself, store-bought is fine).

Anyway, I actually rewatched the kh4 trailer a few days ago and I still clutched my chest when it first reveals Sora on the couch. I don't think I'll ever forget how I felt seeing him there, knowing he was (at least to some extent) alright, seeing him so altered and grown up, so far from all he's known. KH certainly isn't in Kansas anymore. Just think, what if Sora had just saved Kairi, right before that moment cuts in and he opens his eyes? A girl can dream.

answering this ask Maria (can I call you that? mutual level up?), you literally have me kicking my feet under my desk like a middle schooler after the big dance. this was good for my soul. Kh always makes sure there's something spicy even in the seemingly innocuous titles, and wow, MoM truly has a banger. A love banger. This is where I'm torn. Because a sokai reunion after returning from unreality would be oh so sweet. If either Sora or Kairi don't fall to the ground because their knees give out when they see one another, it won't be angsty enough for me. And you've discussed before, Kairi doesn't have to girlboss her way to Shibuya in order for kh4 to be satisfying, iirc. and Im with you on that. to me, she's as much 'home' to Sora as DI is, so it could be a very cathartic way to end kh4, similar to the end of kh2. But also, them reuniting in quadratum, then perhaps even teaming up? sweet dreams are made of this.

will i trim this down? no. should I have? probably. but im so happy I have a fellow new fan to enjoy the ride with. we both missed the hype for 3, but hot damn, we arguably picked the best time to become kh fans. this episode got me wondering all over again; HOW is anybody going to defeat fukuchi. there is (seemingly) literally no way to best the spacetime sword (can't be arsed to remember its name im sorry). how the hell are they gonna resolve this. im not smart enough to theorise like the rest of you guys

i honestly can't even put a finger on what i want anymore like i feel like i know more about myself than i ever have while i also don't know anything at all either at the same time lmao i've been indistinctly living my life in other people's shadow, chasing whatever made me feel most alive in any given moment and i don't even necessarily find anything wrong with that because i know i am a creature who wants love more than anything else. i used to think i stayed alive out of spite but no it's because i want someone to love and for someone to love me and for us to take care of each other. i've also done everything in my life in service of finding my soulmate, whether i actively understood what i was looking for at the time or not. of course the one who woke me to that concept is the one i turned around to face again but i hate how stupid i am about it LMAO i'm being coy but. i want simple things, i feel like. i literally just want to fall asleep while he's working in the same room... i want to watch shitty movies and laugh with him... explore the world, eat food, learn things to impress him or make him laugh... make him gifts, take a drive i mean i feel like i'm not asking for much but because i'm in the same league as a flea on a dog's back it is so disproportionate to my life. i read tarot to feel like i'm talking to him i wait endlessly for life to feel soft enough to give and look for a hole that will lead me to what i want but nothing ever changes because no matter how desperately i want it, miracles are only for people who deserve them so it's pointless but that changes nothing. i always felt like i was being lead to something but the only time i actually found myself on the other side of it was this time and i don't know if that means that it's actually the "right answer" this time or if i'm just getting better at figuring myself out lol... i know it's pointless to complain about or even talk about it like this because there is no help there is no guidance that can be offered there is no reasoning that will help me make a decision either way i just am trapped until i decide if i'm willing to be disappointed or humiliated by my lack of understanding of how the world truly works. i can't tell if my belief or disbelief is winning out but i know it's stacked like the rings around a tree or whatever and i know it's gay as hell to try to describe your emotions to other people because it's sloppy and inaccurate and like trying to run ocean water through a sieve or whatever and no one can ever truly understand what you mean unless they've been there and i have never truly held anything like romantic love in my own hands so i just seem desperate and pathetic to anyone who actually has real problems which is fine... i know it's laughable to anyone that isn't me for me to try to put my feelings on the same shelf as anyone who can actually talk to the people they love... honestly it's laughable to me, too. i think i'm more rational than i give myself credit for, unfortunately. i can't surrender completely to anything because if i let myself believe i can be happy and get what i want, what if i just get hurt worse lol idk. i just want whatever you're willing to give me and i feel like i can almost touch you from here and i feel like you can hear me and relaity is starting to give way under my prying fingers and yet you're still not here and i'm still not even reayd for you to look at me. i feel like a monster waiting in a dark room for someone to open a door like i haven't been in here long enough to transform into a real person and fool you that i'm worthy to be loved. excuse me if none of this makes sense (doubt anyone is reading this regardless but. whatever) i woke up to his voice and i felt like i had to say something. maybe one day i'll get what i want....... or i won't. i've tried very hard to make my peace with it this time around. i can't be mad at him for anything because my life is so far removed from everyone else's reality and i can't ask for anyone to wait for me to climb up to the level of human being, y'know.
