I haven't been to Faire in a hot minute but here's an attempt. This took longer than it had to because I had a cat on my face. Apologies for any typos that may have escaped.
"So what inspired the name, The Thirsty Siren?" Sir Evan asked, glancing up at the wooden sign hanging above the entrance to Tommy's tavern. He noticed Evan slipping out of character, dropping the faux British accent for his natural speech.
Tommy followed Evan's gaze up to the sign. "Oh, that was there before I took over, I just never bothered to change it." Tommy never does accents, he's terrible at it, and he's not an actual character so he's not actually required. Evan, on the other hand, could get in trouble if one of the directors catch him. It'd probably be all right as long as he doesn't talk to any of the guests.
"Ah, oh-okay," Evan said, fidgeting with his helmet. "Anyway, it's, almost joust time, uhm, so..." He glanced around, taking in the busy path, filled with actors, guests in period-accurate garb, and a trio of people dressed in Star Trek uniforms. The Faire gets at least one of those each season. Tommy unashamedly loves seeing them.
Tommy could hear the pipe and drum band whose name he could never remember playing on the Globe stage. He knew once they were done, it would be time for the joust to start. And once the joust was done, it would be the end of the day and time to shut down for the night.
Evan was still standing there, the sunshine catching the highlights in his curls and giving his cheeks a rosy glow. Tommy didn't have trouble imagining him on the cover of a fantasy novel, standing with his sword and shield, fighting a dragon. "Do you ever--" Evan started, glancing at Tommy from behind beautifully long eyelashes. "You ever watch the joust?"
"At least once," Tommy said, smiling.
Evan looked at him fully, red lips pulled back fully into a grin. "You should, ah, you should come watch."
"Who are you fighting this time?" Tommy asked. He probably should already know this, but he couldn't remember what the plot was supposed to be this season. As a vendor, it wasn't Tommy's job to keep track.
"Those dastardly Spaniards," Evan said, in the British accent.
"Exciting, maybe I will go."
"Huzzah!" Evan said, gave a little bow, then put his helmet back on.
Tommy walked back into the tavern, which was still busy. "You good for the next hour or so, Howie?" he asked his business partner behind the bar.
"Yeah! Everything under control! You go watch the hot knights," Howie said with a wink.
Tommy grinned at his hold friend and pointed a finger at him. "Yeah, see ya later."
He wandered the grounds, past the human chess board, the axe throwing place, and Craftmen's Alley and Ye Olde Food Court. A minstrel plays his fiddle on the way down the path to the jousting field. The smells of turkey legs, incense, and those amazing fried potato wedges Tommy eats too many of.
He paused when the Queen's Court passed by on the way to the field, but his eyes were drawn not to her majesty but to one particular knight following close behind. For a moment, Evan's eyes met Tommy's and he winked.
Tommy followed the procession and found a seat at the front. He never came to these, really, so if he was going to take the time, he was going to get a good view.
That's how Sir Evan found him, when the knights were riding their horses around the field, being introduced by the emcee.
To be continued because I'm sleepy.
Renaissance faire meet cute between tavern owner Tommy ("I brewed this ale myself") and a knight ("Sir Evan" he introduces himself as; only later does Tommy hear "Buck" but it's too late, he's registered that cute knight with the bisexual color flag as Evan in his head)
A couple of drunk faire attendants try to harass Tommy's friend's teen daughter and he steps in, and Buck steps in too. Two big strapping guys tend to convince people to back off, especially when one is built like a tank and the other is literally armored
Tommy gives Buck a free mug of ale, and they talk, and throughout the day Buck keeps coming back to the tavern and Tommy watches Buck at the joust
And instead of a girl's handkerchief as a favor, Buck takes the checkered handkerchief in Tommy's apron as his favor and ties it around his wrist
Buck wins the joust and canters over, hopping down to wink at Tommy, then kissing the piece of cloth around his wrist. Tommy can't help leaning over the fence to kiss Sir Evan for real.

Part 2 of this
Next part here
Stan hadn't been able to help it. He had asked for your address to keep in touch.
He was able to now.
Able to send and receive letters. There had been a few instances when he was on the road that he dialed your number and your ma or pa answered, he had pretended to be a wrong number for them.
He was too chicken to talk to Ford why did he think he could talk to you?
But letters were different.
He could do letters.
You'd explained how you moved to California for college and loved the area so much you decided to stay. He had known you wanted to go to college but the three of you had always said you'd stay near New Jersey.
He wished so much that he kept in touch but his life was shit. He made things shit. He was shit.
His dad had been right.
He wasn't even worth turning up to a funeral for.
Stan paused mid sentence. Maybe he shouldn't be exchanging letters with you, maybe he should just stay away.
But a letter couldn't hurt.
He wouldn't have to change his voice or wear gloves or pretend he had smarts.
He could relax.
If something seemed off in the letter he could restart it.
And so the correspondence continued.
~~
It took a year and a half before you suggested coming down to see Mr Mystery himself.
Ford explained that his Uni grant had stopped so he was relying on good ol' fashioned tours of his labs to make money, only the real science didn't interest the resistance so he had to be creative.
You were sure he bored his patrons to death by explaining the rays and dials and tubing he had before coming up with the idea to sell to his clientele.
If only Stan was here. He'd be able to come up with good monsters and ghouls, just like in school.
You were able to find some sketches he gifted you (from a comic he was determined to publish) to send in your letter. Hopefully Ford could use them for ideas. It was a little bittersweet to part with them but ultimately it was for the greater good and you could always ask for them back.
So, now, here you were merely proposing a meet up but it felt... Well it felt wrong? Yeah, Ford and yourself were mates but Stanley was always the glue that kept you together.
Despite the mixed emotions you pushed on and signed your name before shoving it into an envelope and sending it off.
~~
The journey to 'Gravity Falls' - brilliant name - was not awful.
It took a solid 6 hours of driving but you knew it would be worth it. Knew it had to be done.
You would keep your friendship with Ford alive for Stan. You'd be the honorary sibling.
Once you were in Oregon you pulled up the map he had sent and followed the instructions he scratched onto it. 'Don't turn by the Horse Scarecrow go further to the Pig', 'There's a big boulder by the town sign be careful, I swear it moves', 'left by the tree that looks like Dolly'.
They were odd instructions but they were perfect. The town was definitely unique.
It was 9 when you finally made it to the 'Mystery Shack' and you had to admit it was cute. There were homemade arrows pointing in all directions and a copious amount of question marks dotted about.
The sign on the door read "closed" but you could see at the back there were lights on.
Climbing out of your car you twaddled over to the back door, rucksack slung on your shoulder, the soft sounds of a TV wafted through the door as you knocked.
The TV stopped and you could hear wood creaking as Ford approached. The door opened and revealed him wearing a suit with a large question mark tie.
He smiled down at you, gesturing for you to enter. "Hi."
"Hey." Your eyes scanned the room, mostly homemade wooden furniture with the odd trinkets or pop of colour. There were a few sciency looking gadgets but otherwise this was a humble home. "It's really cute in here."
Ford scratched the back of his neck. "Thanks."
The silence was slightly weird but you anticipated that it may be a bit weird at first. Just have to push through it.
"Have you eaten?" He asked.
"No but to be honest I'm zonked." You chuckled. "Long journey."
Ford clasped his hands. "Of course, well, you can have my room. I'll take the couch."
"Uhm, I can't kick you out of your room." You didn't realise that he would have to vacate his bed for you to visit. "I'll stay on the couch."
"You take the bed, I won't hear anything else about it." He added the last part as your mouth opened to argue.
~~
Staying with Ford was odd.
He was more casual than you remembered.
Gave fewer lectures.
But otherwise your stay was pleasant.
You helped him in the Shack; printing t-shirts, manning the register, flicking the lights on and off, making spooky noises when needed. It was fun.
You enjoyed your time here because it was silly. You were able to let loose whilst watching some suckers gape at a wax figure or a crudely put together unicorn.
After leaving it really didn't take long to decide on coming back.
Spending every other weekend up in Oregon became your routine. Yeah, the drive was shitty but it was worth it.
Ford loved it. Or well.. if he didn't he didn't say anything.
Eventually you were gifted a cot upstairs and you considered staying for longer.. perhaps even for an indefinite amount of time. It was quite conflicting wanting to stay with Ford.
You still loved Stan. You'd always love him but you saw so much of Stan in Ford it was ludicrous.
The way he'd swindle and trick, his Mr Mystery persona, and whenever a patron was a little handsy, the way he'd threaten them.
Ford never did that. He outwitted people. He was the brains.
But maybe that changed in the time you spent apart. His father had made the two of them box and from Ford's ears he'd kept up the sport.
~~
Through all your time at the shack there was only one thing that truly bothered you. It was a teeny tiny detail but it drove you insane.
Ford never removed his gloves.
He was always wearing them.
Everyday, every night, every meal, everywhere.
You'd seen his hands before.
Everyone back home had.
They were just hands!
Maybe he didn't want the town to think they were real, wanted them to think he was a fraud because being a freak was worse?
It didn't matter in the grand scheme of things but it was agitating you.
~~
"Put teeth on it." You suggest, sitting on the floor with your back leaning against the wall.
Ford made a face but nodded, prying the crows beak apart. He wandered around the shop, opening cupboards and drawers. "I'm sure I had som-"
"The blue cabinet." You pointed.
Ford opened it and voilà he produced a jar of teeth. You didn't bother to ask if they were real, either of the answers would be weird. Yes = weird. No, where did he get such realistic teeth? = Weird.
You observed Ford positioning the teeth, he waited for your approval which you gave and began gluing them.
It was late in the evening and he had promised the town and its tourists something big. So crow with teeth and a skunks tail it was.
He was precise with the glue gun but still stopped to talk with you, ever the gentleman. How had their father made them?
You hated their dad with a passion.
He was an absolute asshole.
You'd tell him that, too.
He didn't even come to the funeral. You'd assumed he had passed but Ford told you he didn't want to come. His parents were starting afresh with Shermie.
No, you wouldn't include Caryn on that. She was lovely but Filbrick...
Filbrick was something else entirely. In fact, you remember first meeting him, he glanced up at you over his newspaper before returning to the words. Stan had reassured you that that type of behaviour meant he liked you but you knew differently. You knew, even at age 10, Stan was covering for his father.
Ford hadn't experienced that. He never knew what it was to disappoint his father and you felt for Stanley. You were even present once when Ford tried to explain that Stan seemed to take short cuts and maybe that was why Filbrick was disappointed. It was later in the week when Stan confessed that he had to take short cuts, of course he did, because how else could he possibly keep up?
"Ah shit!"
Your eyes shot back to Ford who was shaking his left hand. Quickly standing to assist. "What happened?"
"Just a burn, it'll be fine." Ford brushed you off, resuming the task at hand.
You scoffed. "Ford, take the glove off, you idiot."
"It's fine." He insisted.
"You're sticking to things!"
Ford grumbled but didn't reply.
"I've seen your hands before. There's no one else around. Why are you being weird?"
"I'm not weird." He huffed turning away from you. "Don't look."
You rolled your eyes before turning away. "Fucking hell, if I didn't know any better I'd say you were Stan pretending to be Fo-"
It hit you.
All the stupid chats, all the late night beers, all the jokes, the lame costumes, the zero science talk, the scams, the lies, everything.
Your body had turned without your brain catching up and you were face to face with a Stan. Not 100% sure which one.
Stan's eyes were wide, gloved hand clutching his ungloved one. You took three steps to him, invading his personal space, to place your own hand on top of his. Slowly you tugged on it and revealed the five digits.
Wh-what did this mean?
This was Stan?
Stanley?!
Where was Ford?
Why?
Why did Stan need- what was he doi- where wa-
His palm gripped yours. "I can explain."

i respect the commitment to the bit
it may have started as a bit but i believe ive lost myself in it i enjoy horses now more than ever before except when i was six years old and my friend told me that that very night she was visited by a magical horse named thunder who came down from the sky and took her to bella sara the horse game website and she said the following night i should go with her and i took everything extremely literally and believed everyone ever at that age so that night i asked my mom to help me pick out clothes to wear before going to bed so i would have a nice outfit to go to bella sara land in and she said no go to bed and i said please i must go tonight to bella sara land what if the horses show up and im not waiting for them and theyre sad and she said the horses are not going to take you to bella sara in the middle of the night that was definitely either a dream your friend had or a total lie spoiler alert that night and all the nights that followed i was not taken by the horses to go to bella sara but spent the next few months saying they visited me so that i felt included as many other girls started to say they were also visited by the bella sara horses and taken to bella sara land and i believed them too and felt extremely left out but also plagued by guilt and anxiety for lying so im not sure if it was worth it in the long run
but yeah i like horses quite a lot and i have a lot more horse items now than before i started this account which signifies the transformation of a bit to reality though i cant collect horse items as i already collect jfk items

☆ 𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐁𝐀𝐁𝐈𝐄𝐒 ☆
𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓: Babysitting your brother's daughter, Agatha can't help but find herself biting her as a warning for the secrets told.
𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒: biting (gentle bites)
𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐃 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐓: 820
It wasn't often that you heard from your family, even less so from your brother. However, with your brother's upcoming travel to the town just over and a babysitter cancelling, you were dumped with the responsibility of babysitting instead, unfortunately.
So, kneeling down on the floor of your house with a small smile spreading across your face, you coo with a gentle tone of voice.
“Look at you, being so smart” you had commented, watching with a tamed unamusement as the baby had picked up the small horse statue carved from pine wood. Her small fingers wrapped around the throat of the animal, hands not developed enough for form a tight squeeze, but strong enough to hold in a soft clasp.
“Talking to the imaginary friend again?” Agatha’s voice rang out from behind you as she stood, balancing most of her weight upon her right leg, arms crossed and her hair messily thrown up in some excuse of a “fashionable” style.
“I beg your pardon?” You let out a choke of disbelief, your eyes narrowing as you glance at the woman who can only stare back with a daring smirk. “I'm not talking to an imaginary friend, I'll have you know”
“Then who is of our company?”
You flick your head slightly, motioning for her to step closer as your fingers wrap around the underarms of the infant. “Look at me!” You speak through a tightening tone, a smile threatening to break way. “I'm a baby, I need your attention!”
“Ahh…” Agatha clicks her tongue, kneeling down slightly as her hands remain almost limp beside her. “You're babysitting today… that totally slipped my mind”
“Yeah, well, no one else was available” you pause, letting your fingers slowly slip from the smaller girl's arms. “Besides, this may put you on good terms with my family too”
Laughing dryly, Agatha almost slaps your shoulder, “we're already on semi-decent terms. I fret to think they'll find out I'm a witch someday, though. That's when I'll need those accommodations”
You tch, eyeing your girlfriend slightly. “They'd probably disown me before I could ever breathe your name again”
“Or sell us out for ransom”
“That's not very nice, Agatha” you warn, your eyes going almost lazy as you throw her an odd look.
Though, despite your slight defence in protecting your family's name, in the lime light, what Agatha was speaking of was certainly of a possibility - one you'd wish to avoid.
So, in turn, telling your parents of your girlfriend's stance in witchcraft was out of the picture. For now, at least.
“You didn't hear anything, okay, little one?” Agatha had ignored your look, turning to hold the tinier humans' hands, watching the way her young fingers wrapped around the length of just one of her fingers. “If you did, and you tell anyone, we're gonna have a real serious problem”
“She's three, Agatha. She can barely even say Mama and Dada.” You laugh teasingly at her seriousness, noting the way her eyes crinkle at the edges from the narrowing of her eyes.
“At the age of three, I was already running around, causing my ‘Mama’ some awfully inconvenient hassle” she grins, blue eyes shining in a haze of mischief. “Stealing food, drawing on the walls, biting the furniture once my first tooth came in-”
“A real devil in disguise”
“Exactly” she chuckles, leaning down till her face was just a rulers length away from the infants face. “Do you know what we do to snitches?”
“Agatha…” you groan slightly, having gained the exact same treatment during the first night of finding out about her supernatural abilities.
She waits, watching as the baby lets out a small squeal, smiling at her impaired ability to yet talk. “We eat them all up like this-”
You observe the way Agatha brings the infants' hand to her mouth, her teeth gently sinking into the vulnerable of her flesh just enough to leave a small indentation.
Your lips purse slightly, watching at the way Agatha lets out small “nom nom” sounds to the slow rhythm of which she scatters the smaller hand in gentle bites - never going far enough to actually hurt her - but enough to leave her confused.
“If this were anyone else, I'd almost be jealous” you tut, shaking your head.
“Oh? Do you want to be bitten, too?” Agatha looks to you, smirking slightly as she takes your hand in her own.
You laugh lightly, scrunching your nose as you pull your hand back. “No… I think I'm okay for now”
Agatha can only let out a gentle hum, licking her drying lips slightly as she adjusts her… your T-shirt as it hangs loosely upon her shoulders and around her throat. “You know where to find me if you ever change your mind”
“In my house…? In my clothes…?”
“Exactly” Agatha lets out a simple laugh, her eyes closing as her head tilts back slightly. “And don't you forget it”

its been a week and a half since you last saw her when she drove you home from the match in her old busted truck. thoughts of her plagued your mind all week. you wondered if she was working. you wondered if she was out with friends. you wondered if she was thinking about you. she is but you don’t know that. you’re not aware she’s thinking of you also. thinking of the way the smell of strawberries stained her car after you left. thinking of the way you said you like it when she calls you sweetheart.
both of you wonder when the next time you’ll see each other is.
its a wednesday afternoon, you’re currently sitting on the couch with dina. she’s the only friend you have down here so far and its not weird that she’s dating your brother. she has come over a bunch, helping you shop, getting little things for your apartment, watching movies and of course, getting high. which is exactly what you’re doing right now. you both sat on your old lumpy couch and watched the iron man series that you had on dvd, not paying to much attention to the tv, but rather your conversion.
“so no luck still? you should just come work with me at the farm, i mean i love it- the horse shit not so much.” dina exclaimed.
“yeah its like no one is hiring, i may have to take you up on that, i still wanna keep looking though, maybe something will come along.” you told her.
“yeah avoid horse shit as long as you can, something will come along don’t worry!” she said trying to make you feel better knowing you’re stressed. but at the end of the day, you need something to fill your time besides thinking of the boxer that drove you home.
you guys just sat and talked then eventually as the credits rolled for the last movie, you got up and started to clean up the mess from the pizza you ordered earlier. after you went to the kitchen and put the plates in the sink, you grabbed the bottle of wine and two glasses and made your way back to dina still in the living room. you hold it up to her and with the look on her face, you knew she was thinking the same thing.
by the third bottle, it was 10pm and you’ve run out of weed and not much wine left but you both are feeling great, laughing and giggling like kids. its nice to have a friend you thought.
“what are you doing friday night?” she questioned.
you responded to her, “probably exactly what im doing right now” you both laughed.
“well there’s another match this weekend, me and jesse are going if you want to come along again, ellie will be there too.” she replied. you couldn’t hide the smile on your face when she said her name.
“woah! what’s with the smiling and the blushing…” she joked asking. you didn’t tell either of them what happened that night at the first match. from outside or inside, they assumed you both got an uber and you didn’t tell them any differently.
“nothing, i just thought she was nice thats all.” you said trying not make any signs of anything more.
“oh she is!,” dina started, “well maybe not at first but once you get to know her, we’ve been friends for years now,” she laughed and kept going, “she fights at the gym sometimes, but she works there too, its a good hang out space plus cheap drinks. plus she’s bringing us the restock.” she finished as she picked up her weed jar.
“oh you get it from her?” you inquired, thinking back to the faint smell of weed in her car when she drove you home.
“yeah she’s got good stuff and nice deals, ugh its great, always easier to get it from someone you know,” she ended. you thought about asking her if you could tell her to get you some to and for some other non-obvious reason but she beat you to it.
“ill send her your number and she’ll text you.” she said to you as she pulled out her phone and sent a message. a few moments later, her phone rang and she answered, it was jesse waiting outside for her so she gave you a hug and grabbed her stuff and you walked her to the door.
you locked it before you turned around to sit back down on the couch, grabbed the wine glass and poured the last bit in your cup, you were still drunk and definitely feeling it. you heard your phone buzz and you picked it up, answering the call, not paying attention, thinking it was dina but the voice surprised you.
hey sweetheart
you didn’t expect her to call so soon, you haven’t even given yourself a moment to think about what to say beforehand. you weren’t prepared for this. you feel yourself getting nervous over the girl you only met last week but you just cant help it. she’s been on your mind since you met her.
hi ellie
dina sent me your number i hope that’s okay
yes she said she was going to
well in that case, she said you needed to buy
yeah we managed to smoke up all her stash and i haven’t gotten any since i moved here, probably cause i didn’t know where to get it
well no worries, i’ve got everything you need sweetheart.
thank you ellie, you said smiling but she couldn’t see you through the phone, you wondered what she’d think if she saw how red your face was right now.
you can call me el sweetheart, no need to be so formal.
she laughed through the phone, and then asked if you were coming to the gym on friday with your brother and dina.
they invited me but i hadn’t thought about it yet, not wanting to sound too eager about the potential thought of seeing her on friday.
mhm- well you should, we’re just gonna have some drinks and chill so nothing crazy. but i will have the weed for you then if that peaks your interest.
bribing me with drugs?, you laugh into the phone and she laughs with you.
if that’s how you want to put it sweetheart, sure
you smiled into the phone, not even sure how to respond to that before becoming flustered, before you continued,
i guess we’ll just have to wait and see then…
yeah i guess we will… goodnight sweetheart.
that was the last thing she said before she hung up and you sat staring back at a black screen. thinking that now she has your number and you have hers.
it’s almost 11 now as you brush your teeth, throw on a t shirt and cuddle up in bed. falling asleep to the thoughts of how friday was going to go when you finally saw her again.

HI! could it be possible for you to do the readers first day at kings landing?
Bcs i imagine it would be awkward 😭 and they would stalking the poor girl while she is trying to be alone
Also i imagine she would know everybodys first name 💀 especially her sword protector and favorite maiden
I'm assuming you're talking about bastard! princess reader, but yes, it would be so awkward 💀
Everything is so towering and big around her, the walls and locked doors and gates, all trapping her inside like a rat in a cage. Her new family would be particularly clingy to her as well, always at her heel wherever she goes. Poor girl is desperate just for some time for herself, just a moment of isolated peace without having a family member looming over her and trying to spend time with her. At some point she may even resort to hiding in tree branches just to hide from them, and watch chaos unfold as servants and guards run around like headless chickens as Daemon orders them to find you at once.
And yeah absolutely she would find out everyones names, because let's be honest there's only so much one can do for fun whilst trapped in a castle. She'd personally meet everyone in the castle whilst loitering and exploring every nook and cranny of the castle, the cooks, the scullery maids, the horse keepers, even the lavatory cleaners. I like to think due to her having grown up amongst common fold in her village/town, she doesn't treat people like servants. She doesn't have that mentality, so whoever she meets in the castle, she treats them like any other person. This may even give her a reputation amongst the common people and small folk, earning her the adoring title as the 'peoples princess'.
That's such a sweet idea too that she gets to know her protector and personal handmaiden well, because you bet her family are going to assign her 24/7 hourly protection (both to keep her safe, and to stop her from escaping). Just imagine a young princess reader inspecting her sword protector's armour and cape, and he has to stand perfectly still with a straight face as he has to fight the urge to smile at how endearing the princess is. Same with her personal handmaiden, who's always carefully dressing her and brushing/washing her hair.
Bastard! princess reader is a bit of a reclusive gremlin, but she's very much adored by both royalty, and common people

Marked Part 1
PART 2
A Bad Batch x Red Dead Redemption crossover AU (with illustrations :)
This is my first time writing fanfiction!
“Omega” felt like too sci-fi of a name for this universe so I changed it to “Meggy”. Everyone else is the same.
If you haven’t played RDR2 don’t worry, I’m not counting on every reader having done so. All you need to know is it’s about a gang of outlaws in 1899 running from trouble, chaos everywhere. The world is set in a kind of “fantasy” United States, where the places and cultures are heavily based on real life, but have different names for the most part. There are also some sci-fi elements to the world that I may or may not implement :) This takes place around the first chapter of RDR2 when the Van Der Linde gang is camped out at Horseshoe Overlook.

The foothills above Valentine were peaceful, densely forested, and rarely traversed. Above the treetops the snowy peak of Mount Hagen shone like a beacon. Below the hillside the earth plunged into the deep and narrow Dakota River canyon. It was a perfect place to lie low for a while. Plan the next move.
Meggy sat on the back of her brothers’ wagon, the horses had been unhitched and were grazing on the small clearing where they had set up camp. The contentedness of the beasts calmed her. The two massive horses simply snacking away and existing, nothing else on their mind. She wished she could escape worry so easily as the breeze blew her short blonde hair and ruffled her skirt.
Swimming in her own thoughts, she didn’t hear her brother's voice calling to her until he was beside her. “There you are!” Hunter sighed with relief as he approached. “Are you… alright?” His tone dropped quieter.
“Yeah, just thinking I guess.” Meggy swung her boots ponderously. She held something in her hands, resting on her lap.
“What’s this?” Hunter came closer, looking at her hands.
Meggy froze. Frozen like she had rehearsed time and time again at the school. Bracing herself physically and mentally to be in trouble, again. She looked down with shame.
Hunter parted her hands, revealing a tiny rabbit kit, its unweaned eyes still closed. “Where’d you find this?”
Meggy looked up and was confused to see her brother smiling. This was wrong. She should be in trouble for touching dirty animals.
“Under the wagon.” She muttered, still not convinced she wasn’t about to be reprimanded, especially now that she had just confessed to a second crime: crawling around under a vehicle.
“We should find its nest, it needs its mother.” Hunter took a step back. Meggy stared at him, her mind was still not catching up to the fact of what was going on. “Pick him up, let’s go look.” Hunter helped her off the wagon so she could safely cup the tiny creature in both of her equally tiny hands.
“Look for a hole capped with fur, there might be tracks of bare earth in front of it, and cropped grass.” Hunters eyes scanned the forest floor for rabbitsign, Meggy watched him and then mimicked his movements.
Hunter noticed that Meggy was uncharacteristically quiet as they searched. Did I do something wrong? Having a kid around had been an ongoing adjustment. In the short time she had been with them Meggy had shown a wide range of emotions, profoundly sensitive and resilient at the same time.. But this was the first time he had seen her freeze up like this.
The kit began to squeak incessantly. Hunter saw a flit of movement near a Boulder. Meggy followed his gaze. A rabbit doe near her burrow.
As they neared she scurried back underground, Meggy deposited the kit near the hole and they watched it crawl inside.
“Nice work, kid!” He held his hand out for a high five, Meggy flinched, almost imperceptibly, but Hunter noticed.
In a moment the worry melted off her face and she grinned, slapping his hand with her new energy. “That was fun! Do you think I can learn to track like you someday?”
“I think you just had your first lesson.”
-
The next few days were a much needed break from action, for the most part. The gang lived on small game, wild edibles, and what was left of their canned goods. Wrecker showed Meggy how to pick the best firewood. Echo lent her a couple of his books, glad to have a third person around who knew how to read. Crosshair kept his distance, but patiently entertained some of her questions as he cleaned his rifle. Then sent her away after warning her to stay away from their munitions crate.
Tech finally caved to Meggy’s insistence on riding one of their draft horses. He picked Marauder, the slightly less excitable of the two. The chestnut gelding was certainly not a kid’s horse, but as a retired warhorse, he was desensitized at least. Meggy was surprised at how much thinking went into riding, or maybe that was just because Tech was her teacher. He had a lot to say about riding technique. As he lunged Maurauder with Meggy astride, barely able to straddle the barrel chested beast, he rattled on about gaits, position, neck-reining, posting, side-passing, halting, and so on.
-
Meggy woke on the fourth morning. A wave of bliss washed over her as she sat up in her bedroll. The last few days had truly been the best ever, living off the land with her brothers who she didn’t even know she had until a couple weeks ago. They chose to risk everything to save her.
She was still coming to terms with what they had sacrificed for her. Couldn’t help but feel a twitch of guilt every time she could sense them censoring their usual crass demeanor in front of her (even though Wrecker had already willingly taught her a few of his favorite curse words). She didn’t want them to change for her, but also didn’t want to be anywhere else in the whole world. Crosshair seemed especially snide about her presence, always keeping his distance and almost never speaking to her.
She scanned the camp, the fire was still smoldering, the bedrolls still lined around it like a flower. Two of which were empty, one was neatly made, the other looking like a wild animal had escaped from it.
She got dressed and walked around the wagon, surprised to see Hunter and Echo tacking up the horses.
“You’re leaving?”
Hunter looked up first “You’re up early!” He adjusted Havoc’s bridle. “Just getting some supplies in town, we’ll be right back.”
“Can I come? Please?!”
Echo glanced up at her,, and then looked to Hunter “I don’t think it’s a good idea.” He said before going back to picking Marauder’s hoof, holding it on his thigh between his torso and what was left of his right arm.
There was a long silence. Echo could practically smell Hunter’s guilty look, even with the ass end of a horse between them.
“Of course you can come.”Hunter gave in. Echo rolled his eyes.
Meggy tried to contain her excited squeal.
“Hunter, there are people looking for her, we can't bring her to town.” Echo spat as he stood up.
“Don’t worry, I have an idea.” Hunter smirked.
-
The world was so much bigger than she ever could have imagined. The trees flew by as the trio cantered down the wagon trail toward Valentine. Meggy rode with Hunter on Havoc, his black mane nearly whipping her in the face. The speed was terrifying at first, but Meggy’s fear was quickly replaced by excitement as they got closer to town.
Her skirt had been replaced by a pair of extra trousers lying around, they didn’t have a belt small enough so a length of rope held them up. Finding a hat that didn’t look ridiculous on her was more challenging but a wool cap ended up being the best fit.
Now hopefully anyone looking for a “girl kidnapped from the Saint Denis Orphanage” wouldn’t think twice if they saw a boy.
Echo still didn’t think it would work.
-
The streets were still a sloppy, muddy mess from rain several days ago. Echo frowned as he dismounted and his boots sunk into the filth. They hitched the horses and went about their business, Echo to the gunsmith and Hunter and Meggy to the general store.
The streets were fairly quiet, an early start to the day meant less eyes around.
Meggy marveled at the abundance of items in the general store as Hunter bartered with the shop owner. She had so many questions, so many items she couldn’t identify, but tried to keep quiet so her boyish illusion would remain uncompromised. Once Hunter had packed the new supplies into his saddlebag they exited the store.
”G’morning, mister. Got a light?” A tall burly man leaned against the wall just outside the store. Meggy startled a bit, Hunter did not, he heard the lumbering figure approach while they were still inside.
“Sure.” Hunter fumbled in his pocket for his lighter and handed it to the man. The flame illuminated his face, his eyes rimmed with the cracked tan skin of someone who spent a lot of time outdoors. His battered brown hat and dirty blue jacket bore similar weathering. He took a long drag and handed the lighter back. “Thank you mister.” He blew out the smoke “and little miss.”
Hunter nodded and began to walk away, then realized what the man had just said… “little miss”. It could be nothing… just a slip of the tongue… there’s no way someone this far out could know who she was. He quickened his pace as they rounded away toward the gunsmith.
The man took one more drag from his cigarette before putting it out on the ashtray on the windowsill, as he did so he scanned across the street toward another figure sitting in front of the saloon. A shorter, thinner man with black greasy hair and a black hat, two long scars clawed from under his eye to the corners of his jaw. The blue-jacketed man gave a nod just big enough to be seen from the distance between them.
Inside the gunsmith, Hunter spoke in a low voice from behind Echo “we should go.”
“I’m not finished yet.” Echo was inspecting the quality of the bullets he was about to purchase.
“Just get them and let's go.” Hunter murmured.
Echo gave an annoyed look, but reluctantly agreed and they paid the gunsmith.
As they exited the store Hunter’s paranoia climbed several levels when he saw the stranger was gone, his presence replaced by his still smoldering cigarette.
The trio hurried to the horses, mounted up, and headed back up the hill into the forest.
“What the hell was that about?” Echo scolded once they were farther away from town.
“I just got a bad feeling.” Hunter checked over his shoulder for the fifth time in a minute, instinctually resting his hand on his thigh holster.
-
“But we just got here!” Wrecker complained loudly, the only way he knew how to complain. The gang deliberated around their late morning campfire.
“I agree, moving camp would be unwise.” Tech fiddled with some type of hardware from the wagon on his lap. “Moving around would only draw more attention from more people.”
Crosshair remained silent, dragging on his first cig of the day. “If you really think they were after Meggy, don’t you think that guy would’ve just taken us then and there while we were in town? Instead of now when we’re back with our full party?”Echo wondered.
“If he’s such a good bounty hunter that he found us all the way across three states, surely he could take on one guy, a gimp, and a child.” Crosshair smirked.
Echo ignored his antagonistic younger brother.
Hunter sighed.
“I’m sorry. This is all my fault, isn’t it?” Omega sulked in the grass, hugging her knees at her chin. Flowers she had picked drooping in her hands.
“Her situational comprehension is quite high for someone her age.” Tech observed.
“We’ll be fine. We’re far off the trail, hidden by the trees. I did my best to cover our tracks. Let’s just keep the fire small tonight, we’ll be fine.” Hunter reassured them.
-
“Four men, two of them are the ones we saw in town earlier.” Arthur focused his binoculars across the canyon. “No wait, five.”
“What’s the plan?” John shifted.
“Bounty is for all of them, but the kid is the biggest reward.”
“And we gotta bring them all back to Saint Denis?”
“Nah, I talked to the sheriff in town, said he can hold them until we can wire someone to collect. For a price.”
“No way we can take all five of those guys.”
“For once, we agree, Marston.” Arthur noticed one of the taller fellows cleaning his rifle. “Poster said they’re ex-military.”
“What are they doing kidnapping an orphan?”
“I don’t know, but it can't be good." Arthur lowered the binoculars.

“No freakin’ way.”
Ellie’s eyes were wide and she was smiling bigger than Joel had seen her smile in what seemed like forever as she watched the rodeo.
It had been his idea to take her to the fair. He thought it would be good for her - get out, have some fun, take her mind off things for a bit. He offered to bring along a friend of hers from school, too, but she just gave him a look.
“What,” she said. “Going to fly Riley in from Boston?”
“Was kinda hopin’ someone a bit more local,” he said, awkwardly cupping the back of his neck. “Must have someone you’d like to hang out with…”
“Welp,” she said, flopping back on her bed and holding her comic book over her head. “Then I’m afraid you’re shit outta luck, old man.”
He wasn’t sure how much fun she’d have just hanging out with him all day but she’d seemed to be having a good enough time. He showed her how to shoot the air rifles at the games and she dragged him through a fun house and they both delighted in all the deep fried snack options.
It had been Ellie who wanted to go to the rodeo. Joel hadn’t been to one in years, not since he was close to Ellie’s age and he’d gone with his dad at this same fair, but it was something that Ellie wanted to do. And, after the last few years, he was happy to do whatever made her happy.
He just hadn’t expected her to fall completely in love with the horses and one rider in particular.
“We got a real special treat for y’all here today,” the announcer had said. “Now, she ain’t competing today - and let me tell you, every man in the building is thankful she ain’t because they’ve all lost to her at one time or another - but we have the one, the only queen of the rodeo scene doing a showcase in a few events today, startin’ with trick riding. Five time world champion -“
There was a loud whoop from behind Joel and he missed your name but he watched as you rode out into the arena, standing on the backs of two horses, a foot on each animal, one hand on the reins and the other high in the air waving at the crowd as you guided the horses past the stands. He watched - just as in awe as Ellie - as you jumped the horses and threw your body around on them as though you were a gymnast on a bar and not a 2,000 pound animal.
He was awed again when, between other events, you stayed on the back of bucking bronco far longer than any of the competitors and again when you demonstrated roping calves. He didn’t think the announcer had been joking when he said the men here were thankful you weren’t competing, he had a feeling you blew them out of the water every time.
“Hey Joel,” Ellie said when a girl who reminded Joel of Sarah when she was younger was doing her trick riding routine. “She’s out there again! I think she’s a coach…”
He looked where Ellie was pointing and she was right, you were standing at the edge of the arena, switching between fidgeting with your necklace and yelling as the girl nearly dragged on the ground from the side of the horse.
“Think you’re right,” Joel said.
“Think she teaches lessons or something?” Ellie asked, looking up at him with wide eyes.
“I dunno baby girl…” Joel said, hesitant.
“Can we find out?” She looked back out at the arena. “Because that looks so fucking cool.”
“Language,” Joel said and he caught her eye roll out of the corner of his eye. He sighed. “But yeah, we can see if we can track ‘er down after the rodeo, see if she’ll teach you. She may not be anywhere around here, though…”
But Ellie looked so fascinated, so happy, Joel knew that the location didn’t matter much. He’d figure something out.
After the rodeo, the two of them made their way around, against the flow of people, finding the entrance to the place where the livestock and competitors were and Joel caught sight of you, talking to the girl who reminded him so much of a young Sarah. A man stopped to talk to you and you gave him some direction before he came toward where Joel and Ellie were standing and watching.
“‘Scuse me,” Joel said as he went past. He stopped, frowning slightly at Joel. “Sorry to bother you but… well, we were wondering if you knew that woman there, the one who was doing the showcase riding before.”
“Oh, yeah,” he laughed. “I know her alright. That’s my sister.”
Joel tried to ignore the way his heart beat a little faster knowing that this guy wasn’t your husband.
“Can I help you with anything?” He continued. “She’s also my boss, I work at her ranch.”
“Was wondering if she did any teaching…” Joel said.
“Because I really want to learn how to do that shit,” Ellie cut her off. “So fucking cool.”
“Ellie!” He gave her a look. “Come on, baby girl, language.”
“Sorry,” she flinched.
Joel looked back to the man.
“Anyway,” he said. “Was hoping she was taking new students…”
“She is,” the man said, reaching into his back pocket and pulling out a business card, handing it over to Joel. The words Triton Ranch were embossed on the front. “I’m Richie, you can email me there and I can help get you all set up for…”
“Can you believe this shit?” You stalked up to Richie, arms crossed tightly over your chest. “Been out here for 30 years and there’s still this sexist bullshit…”
You seemed to notice Joel and Ellie standing there then, looking them up and down before raising your eyebrows to your brother.
“Some new potential clients,” Richie said. “Interested in riding lessons.”
You looked between Joel and Ellie again.
“Which one of you?” You asked.
“Me,” Ellie said, sounding almost giddy.
“Good,” you said. “Need more women out here, some of these men… We’re based near Austin, that work for you two?”
“Perfect,” Joel said, trying to not stare at you because damn were you pretty, especially this close. “That’s where we are, too.”
“Tuesday, 5:30 p.m.,” you said. “Come with boots with a one inch heel on ‘em, you need something to help you stay in stirrups. I got other safety gear you can use… HEY ASSHOLE!”
You stormed off mid-sentence, stalking up to a man who didn’t look remotely prepared to deal with you grabbing him roughly by the shoulder and yanking him around to face you before shoving him back.
“Alright, that’s my cue to go rein her in before she does any real damage,” Richie said, going to follow you. “See you Tuesday, 5:30!”
“Tuesday, 5:30!” Ellie called back before turning to beam at Joel. “This is going to be awesome.”
Joel watched as Richie pulled you back from the man you were trying to pick a fight with, your eyes going wide like fawn, a look of almost innocent indignity on your face as your brother stepped in. Joel resisted the urge to smile a little, the idea of something like Bambi picking a fight. You were… something.
“Think you’re right,” he said.
***
Tuesday
“Savvy, that horse is gonna walk all over you if you keep lettin’ her do that,” you said, watching her from near the fence, your thumb looped through your husband’s wedding band that hung from a chain around your neck. You fidgeted with it, sliding it back and forth as you tried not to panic at your daughter being on the back of a dumb broke horse, tried to remind yourself that you’d been on unbroke horses younger than she was now, tried not to hear Mark’s voice in your head, already nervous about Savvy wanting to go into the same line of work as you. “You gotta be firmer than you’re used to…”
“She’s not responding though,” she said, huffy.
“Because she’s not well broke yet,” you said. “You’re the one who said you wanted to try your hand at breaking horses, you gotta keep them under control…”
Nova, the horse Savvy was on, started pawing anxiously at the ground, tossing her head.
“Savvy,” you said cautiously, stepping closer and gripping the wedding band tightly now. “Ease up, she’s gettin’ restless, dismount if you can…”
She nodded but when she adjusted, the horse bucked and you shot forward as Savvy gave a sharp shriek, ending up on her back. You had to jump to grab the reins out of the air and did your best to pull Nova into a one rein stop from on the ground as Savvy scrambled out of the way. Nova stilled quickly, her nostrils flaring.
“You OK baby girl?” You called to Savvy, keeping your eyes on Nova, staring her down.
“I’m OK,” she called back weakly. “But ow.”
You laughed a little.
“Told you you were gonna get thrown at some point,” you said before reaching a hand up to pet Nova’s muzzle. “And what’s your excuse, young lady? Hm?”
She huffed.
“Can’t go throwin’ people,” you said. “You think you get treats when you behave that way? Hm? Because now I gotta get on you and take you around real quick to make sure you know you can’t get out of shit by doin’ that and neither of us is going to be happy about it.”
She huffed again.
“Well, s’long as we’re in agreement,” you said, keeping the reins in your hand as you ran it over her side. You mounted her and she tossed her head. “Savvy, back behind the fence.”
She sighed.
“Yes, Mom.”
You kept a tight hold on Nova, your knees tighter to her ribs than they usually would be. You eased her into a walk, then a trot, gradually up to a gallup as you took her around the pasture before realizing that you had an audience, the large, handsome man from the rodeo a few days earlier with his teenaged daughter standing at the fence with Savvy and Richie as you rode back around. You brought Nova over and pulled her to a stop near them, the man watching you with a small, crooked smile on his face and fuck, he was handsome. Tall, broad, tan. Exactly your type when it came to men.
“Now I know you didn’t forget,” Richie smirked a little and you wanted to kick him. Just because he knew this guy was your type didn’t mean he had to rub it in. “This is Joel and Ellie, they’re here for her lesson.”
You nodded, catching your breath a little before introducing yourself.
“And I didn’t forget,” you said, shooting Richie a glare. “Just had to get wild thing here under control before I put her away for the day. Don’t worry, Ellie, not putting you on her. I’ve got just the horse to get you started on.”
You dismounted and gave Nova an approving pat before turning to Savvy.
“Can I trust you to get her settled?” You asked, brows raised.
“I can do it!” She said, a little defensive.
“Alright,” you said, and she climbed the fence and took the reins from you. You shed your hat now that you needed to look up at Joel and jerked your head toward the barn. “Follow me.”
Ellie was on you like glue and you looked down to see that she was in a pair of cowboy boots.
“Good,” you said, nodding at the shoes. “You’ll be thankful for those when you’re trying to get a grip on a horse. You ever ridden before?”
“We did a trail ride once,” she said. “But that was a few years ago, right?”
She looked back over her shoulder toward Joel.
“Yeah,” he said. “Before… Yeah, it was about three years ago now.”
You nodded.
“Take it you like animals?” You said as you made your way through the stables, going for the stall of the horse you’d had Richie get ready for this lesson. “Sure hope so, since you want to learn riding.”
“Hell yeah,” Ellie said.
“Ellie,” Joel said, a warning tone in his voice.
“Sorry,” she said, rolling her eyes. You smiled. “Yes. I do. Even though Joel won’t let me get a dog.”
“We can talk about it when you’re off school for the summer,” he said and you tried not to frown. If she was calling him Joel, he wasn’t her dad. You hoped this girl hadn’t been through too much, she seemed like a good kid.
“Well,” you said, coming to a stop at the stall. “You can come hang out with Shimmer here even if he doesn’t let you get a dog.”
Ellie’s face lit up, looking at the horse with a huge smile on her face.
“Shimmer is a rescue,” you said, reaching up to scratch behind her ears. “Got her when she was a yearling a few years back from an unlicensed breeding operation. Poor thing was underfed and skittish as hell but she came around. She’s a real sweet, gentle horse and she loves when people can be real sweet and gentle with her. Think you can do that?”
“Yeah,” Ellie said, smiling at you. “Definitely.”
“Good,” you smiled back, reaching to a bin mounted between stalls and pulling some feed out. “Hand out, palm flat.”
She obeyed and you gave her the feed. Her eyes went a little wide.
“Now keep your palm real flat and hold it out for her,” you said. “You’ll feel her teeth kinda brush your skin a bit but she won’t hurt ya.”
She obeyed and looked on in awe as Shimmer ate from her hand.
“Go ahead and give her a pet,” you said when the feed was gone. “Let her smell you first and once she nudges your hand, she’s OK with you touchin’ her.”
Ellie did as she was told, Shimmer pressing her nose into her hand almost immediately now that she’d associated Ellie with food. You smiled a little as Ellie beamed.
“Hey Shimmer!” Ellie said affectionately, petting her gently. “Aren’t you just the prettiest thing?”
Shimmer chuffed happily and Ellie looked back at Joel.
“She likes me!”
Joel chuckled.
“Yeah, think she does.”
“How about we take her out, get you on her,” you said before turning to Joel. “Just assuming Richie got you all set with the paperwork and whatnot?”
“He did,” Joel nodded.
“Good,” you said. “Thank God for him, lord knows I don’t got the mind for the paper pushing side of this operation.”
You nudged the two of them back and got Shimmer out, giving her an affectionate pat as you led her toward the pasture.
You worked with Ellie for two hours and she was a natural. She was very in tune with her horse, learning how to apply pressure and how to work with her body weight quickly. Before too long, she was ready to do more than walk her a little and you got your favorite horse, Perseus, out of the stable, only putting a bit and bridle on him before jumping on him bareback so you could keep pace with Ellie on a trip around the pasture at Shimmer’s natural walking pace.
To your surprise, Joel didn’t go and sit in the car or even scroll on his phone while you worked with Ellie. He just watched, leaning against the post fence with his hands lightly folded in front of him, a small smile on his face as she made progress. You weren’t sure you’d ever seen a parent - or parent figure, you supposed - quite so engaged, especially for a first lesson.
“Alright,” you said as the time was up and you dismounted your horse, taking the reins from Ellie. “Hop on down, we can take Shimmer back to her stall and you can say goodbye until next time.”
“I can ride her next time?” She asked, eyes bright.
“Course you can,” you said. “Shimmer can be your horse for a while.”
“Hear that, Joel?” Ellie called, more jumping off the horse than anything else. “Shimmer can be my horse!”
She started running for the fence without paying much mind to where exactly she was running, slipping on a puddle and going down quick into a pile of mud.
“Shit,” you swore, running over to her, just catching Joel damn near hurdling the fence to do the same out of the corner of your eye. You got to Ellie first, kneeling beside her, and she was laughing, flat on her back and covered in mud. You breathed a sigh of relief. “You alright there, kid?”
“I’m good,” she laughed, sitting up and looking at her mud covered hands. “Don’t know if he’ll let me in his truck now, though.”
“Scared me, baby girl,” Joel said, joining you. “You hit your head or anything?”
“Nah,” she said. “Just got nice and gross…”
She reached out and smeared some mud on his arm, near his watch. He tried to look irritated but didn’t quite manage it.
“Alright, kiddo,” he said, standing up again and offering her his hand. “Think there are some towels in the truck…”
“If you’d rather,” you said quickly. “You can shower before you go. I’m sure Savvy has some sweats you can borrow until you’re back.”
“Oh yeah, that’s way better,” Ellie said before Joel got a chance to respond, taking Joel’s hand and wiping her hands on her jeans. It didn’t seem to make much difference. “Because this is - sorry, Joel - fucking gross.”
You laughed.
“Yeah, welcome to ranch life,” you said. “C’mon, we’ll go up to the main house, get you cleaned up a bit.”
You cut through the barn and asked Richie to get Shimmer and Perseus settled before getting Savvy from where she was sitting and reading, perched on a stall door next to Nike, your oldest horse that you’d bought off your old boss when you started your ranch 10 years earlier.
“Savvy, this is Ellie,” you said, introducing the girls. Savvy looked like she was stifling a laugh and waved. “Ellie, this is my daughter Savvy. Savvy, do me a favor, we’re goin’ to the main house to get Ellie cleaned up before she heads home, can you show her where your bathroom is and get her something to wear home?”
“Sure!” She said, hopping down and walking up to Ellie. “Nice to meet you. Are you learning how to ride?”
“Yeah!” Ellie said brightly. “It was so f…freaking cool, I was on Shimmer and she was so soft and…”
“Oh yeah, Shimmer’s the best,” Savvy said knowingly, the two girls walking ahead. You smiled a little, watching them as they talked, fidgeting with Mark’s wedding band again.
“You really don’t gotta go through this much trouble,” Joel said, staying alongside you as you followed the girls to the large white farmhouse you called home. “I’m sure I’ve got some towels in the truck and I’d hate to get your house all muddy…”
You scoffed.
“This is a ranch,” you said. “The house sees mud every day. It’ll live. And it’s no trouble. I’d much rather send you home with a bag of muddy clothes than a muddy kid.”
Savvy led Ellie upstairs, a little trail of mud behind them that made you smile. You’d clean it up later but, strange as it was, you loved the little signs of the life you led now. The one where you worked with horses that were yours or that you picked who to sell them to, got to work with passionate kids like Ellie and got mud on the floors of the house your husband had fixed up for you when you’d bought it for a steal years earlier. You kicked off your boots at the door.
“C’mon,” you said, jerking your head toward the kitchen. “Let me get you a drink.”
Joel just stared at you for a moment before following you, stopping at some of the pictures on wall as you went to the fridge.
“Sweet tea?” You asked. “I got stronger stuff, too, but not sure how much of a drive home you’ve got…”
“Tea’s good,” he said. “Thanks.”
You poured him a tall glass and got one for yourself before joining him at the pictures and handing him the drink.
“Thank you,” he said again and you just nodded, taking a sip yourself and looking at the pictures that you so rarely noticed individually anymore. Savvy’s school portraits, pictures of her on podiums, you at the world championships…
“This your wedding day?” He asked, nodding to one of the bigger pictures, one of you in an floor-length white eyelet lace dress, the toe of your best pair of boots peaking out the bottom as you smiled up at your husband, who was standing beside you in his black jeans, a button down shirt and tie.
“That’s it alright. Me and Mark,” you smiled, toying with the ring around your neck again. “Eleven years ago now. Doesn’t feel like that long but damn has a lot happened.”
“Eleven years is a long time,” Joel said. “Congratulations.”
“Thanks, but we only made it nine,” you said, taking a sip of tea and looping the ring onto your thumb. Joel frowned and looked over to you. “He died, just over two years ago.”
“Shit,” he said. “I’m sorry, I didn’t…”
You shrugged.
“It’s fine,” you said. “I mean… well it’s not, it is shit, but it is what it is, you know?”
“I do,” Joel nodded. “My wife, Tess, died, too. September, 2023. Cancer.”
“Shit,” you said this time. “That’s so hard. I’m sorry.”
“Like you said, it is what it is,” he replied.
“We could start a club,” you said. “The ‘it is what it is society for young widows.’ Membership fees are fuckin’ high but hey, at least he company is good.”
Joel snorted.
“What, too soon?” You asked, teasing lightly. You weren’t sure why you felt so comfortable talking like this with a virtual stranger but you were. There was just something about him that felt familiar, comfortable. It was something you hadn’t felt in a very long time.
“Nah,” Joel said. “Just right.”
“Good,” you said, taking another sip of tea.
“Tess is part of how we ended up here,” Joel said. “Ellie taking lessons here, I mean.”
“Yeah?” You asked, brows raised. “Was she a horse girl at heart?”
“Not really,” Joel laughed. “No, she was from Detroit and not much of a naturalist but… well, her dying hit Ellie real hard. We adopted her about four years ago and her and Tess were real close. We were gettin’ on fine just the two of us for a while but then I had to move back here to help my brother out with his business so she lost the closest thing she had to a mom and then less than two years later left all her friends, too. It’s been a rough time for her. Watching you ride at the rodeo was the happiest I’ve seen that kid in months and lord knows I’d do anything to get her to smile again.”
You smiled at him.
“Turns out, all it took was a horse,” you said.
“And you,” Joel said, watching at you with an almost uncomfortably honest look on his face. You realized then just how close you were standing to him, how fucking good looking he was - noticing him in a way you hadn’t really noticed a man since your husband died. Your heart sped up.
“OK way less gross now,” Ellie said from behind you, making you jump and you and Joel turned to look at her. “Also, way more pink.”
You stifled a laugh, Ellie in a pink sweatsuit of Savvy’s.
“Well ain’t you pretty,” Joel teased her lightly and she glared at him. He smiled. “Alright, now what do you say?”
“Thank you for the shower and the clothes,” she said. “Seriously. I was gross.”
“Yeah,” Savvy scrunched her nose. “You really were.”
You walked the two of them out to Joel’s truck, Ellie already telling him excitedly about everything she learned with you that day.
“Sounds like I’ll see you back same time next week?” You said to Joel as Ellie got in the passenger seat.
“Yeah,” Joel smiled. “We’ll definitely be back.”
“Good,” you smiled back. “Looking forward to it.”
Joel looked like he thought for a moment before he nodded.
“Yeah,” he said. “Me, too.”
A/N: I hope you enjoy what will be a pretty short look into how things go in a no outbreak reality for Joel and Bambi! I went ahead and tagged everyone on the Yearling tag list, I hope that's OK! Thank you for reading and caring about these characters, I really cannot thank you enough for this journey we've been on together. It's been such a blessing to share it with you. Love you!!

Stargazing
Summary: You and Bucky are spending some time together under the stars.
Pairing: Boyfriend!Bucky Barnes x Girlfriend!Reader
Warnings: None, just a whole lot of fluff. Nerd Bucky. Nerd Reader. No use of Y/N. My poor attempts at being funny.
Word count: 1K because I'll kick myself I can't make anything short.
Prompt: we're sitting on your roof at midnight and you're pointing out every constellation but out of every star, you shine the brightest.
A/N: I wrote this story in like two hours, so bear with me. I don't know a lot about Astronomy, so I googled everything I put on here. I do know my fair share of Mythology but I realise some things may be wrong or just simply different from things you know, who knows Mythology knows there are a lot of versions of the same story, anything I wrote here are the version I've learned over the years, so no hate, but I'm always open to talk about it more if anyone wants to. Always respectfully, of course. Also, I wrote and posted this from my phone so I'm sorry if there are any mistakes.
Masterlist
“And see those three stars that make an angle?” Bucky points up to them. “That's Coma Berenices.”
One thing not many people know about Bucky Barnes is his love of Astronomy.
Back in the 40s he loved studying the constellations, learning as much as he could. So, after he regained control of his mind and joined the Avengers, he spends his free time catching up in all things space related he's missed since.
You have never been particularly interested in Astronomy, but seeing how passionate your boyfriend gets when it comes to it, you can never say no when he asks you to stargaze with him.
That's why you've spent countless times now in the position you are right now: Laying on a blanket next to Bucky on the roof of the Avengers Compound, looking at the stars and listening to him tell you all about them.
“That one's Cassiopeia…” He points to it. “That one's Lacerta…”
You giggle a little at the funny name and look at him. “Lacerta?”
“It means ‘the Lizard’.” He informs you with a grin while looking at you too.
“Of course it does.” You say playfully and look back up.
“That one is Camelopardalis…” He traces the stars to give you an idea of the shape.
“Now you're just making things up.” You tease him while looking back at his face to find him glaring playfully at you.
“It means giraffe.” He says matter-of-factly.
“Alright, you little geek.” You smile at his indignified scoff but you can see he's fighting a smile, and losing.
You look at each other with goofy smiles for a moment before you softly say, “What else?” prompting him to go on.
He looks back at the stars for a moment before he starts tracing another constellation.
That's something Bucky loves to do, like the most intricate game of connect the dots ever, and he wins every time.
Sometimes you've even made it into a game, trying to find all the stars in a constellation before the other, but he has the unfair advantage of actually knowing them all. But you always have fun playing, even if you end up behaving like children.
And looking at him right now, his eyes on the stars and his hand up to trace them with his finger, you can't take your eyes off of him and you know, out of all the constellations, he shines the brightest.
“That…” He traces the biggest constellation he's shown you tonight. “is the Ursa Major.”
His voice snaps you out of it and you look back up. He's shown you these same constellations time and time again, every time with the same passion and every time you listen intently, just enchanted by his voice.
“And that one…” He traces another one. “is Pegasus.”
Huh, that was a new one. You look at it while tilting your head. “Pegasus?”
“Yeah, that one I don't know what it means.” He chuckles, about to move on to another set of stars when you interrupt him.
“Pegasus is a winged horse from Greek Mythology.” You say before you can stop yourself.
Mythology is something you've always found fascinating and, much like Bucky with Astronomy, you've always tried to learn as much as you could about it.
Unlike Bucky, you've always kept this small passion to yourself, which is why Bucky is looking at you right now with a confused yet amused raise of his eyebrow.
“What? Can't a girl know a random fact?” You say playfully while looking back up at the stars to hide your slight blush.
“So that's all it is? A random fact?” Bucky asks, his eyes still on you and you know he can tell there's more to it. He knows you pretty well, after all.
“Maybe…” You say playfully, finally looking at him with a small smile.
“Tell me more about it?” He says softly, not pushing you to talk but letting you know he's open to listen if you want.
“Well…” You say quietly after a moment, looking back at the stars as you think about what to tell him. “Pegasus was born from Poseidon-”
“Poseidon?” He interrupts you with a small frown. “The god of the ocean?”
“Yeah…” You chuckle, looking at him. “He's also known as the God of Horses.”
“He is?” He frowns more. “Why?”
“Well, according to Greek mythology he invented them.” You explain with a smile. “He created them out of foam from the ocean in order to be elected as the patron god of a new city. But Athena created an olive tree and the citizens saw that as more useful and chose her, naming their city Athens.”
Bucky looks at you with awe, his entire attention on you now as you enthrall him with your words.
“And he was the father of Pegasus?” Bucky asks you, just wanting to hear more of your voice.
“Yeah, Poseidon was his father and Medusa his mother.” You look back up at the stars, trying to recall more details of the story. “He was born when Medusa got decapitated by Perseus. The blood from her neck fell into the ocean and, out of the white foam, came Pegasus, along with Chrysaor.”
“Chrysaor?” He asks, his eyebrows rising in surprise. “Another horse with wings?”
“No, he was a boar with wings.” You correct him. “Chrysaor comes from a name that means ‘he who has a golden sword’. Pegasus doesn't have a meaning, but it symbolizes divine inspiration or the journey to Heaven, because…”
You keep talking about Greek mythology as you look at the stars, Bucky’s eyes on you the whole time.
He finally understands why you love hearing him talk about Astronomy so much even though you have virtually no interest in it.
The way you talk about Mythology, the knowledge and the passion you show… It's breathtaking to see, and Bucky never wants to stop listening to you at this moment.
If you were looking at him you'd see the same look you have on your face when you look at him talking about the stars, the same look he has when he's looking at the stars…
He may love to stargaze, but the biggest, brightest of them all is laying right beside him, and that’s definitely his favorite.

I think the reason I'm a bit iffy about most zutara shippers who call themesleves "pro Katara" (and lets be honest the tags pro katara/katara deserved better are mainly people building themselves a moral highground of "if you disagree with me, you clearly dilslike Katara and want her to suffer") is just the hypocrisy of it all.
Katara's consent was violated by Aang, yes. But Zuko threatening her and being a fucking creep in the "I'll save you from the pirates" scene was sexy and not at all the nightmare of any sane woman.
Katara's role as a healer is treated as her acting subservient and her loosing her feminist icon status. Unless she's healing/offering to heal Zuko.
Aang is immature and childish. But we will handily ignore Zuko, a whole ass 16 year old who's heir to a country throwing a temper tantrum because his girlfriend dared to speak to another man. [Frankly, in my opinion, Zuko isn't really ready for a serious romantic relationship, but yall arent ready for that conversation]
Aang is supposedly misogynistic, but Zuko's many instances of actual misogyny are swept under the rug. Aang is shown in canon to be incredibly supportive of Katara defying the patriarchy.
Supposedly Aang makes Katara do all the housework. Despite there being evidence to the contrary. Zuko has just recently learnt to brew tea.
Katara being the Avatar's wife is supposedly degrading. But if she were Zuko's wife, I'm sure she wouldn't be just a baby maker. (What a horribke thing to call a woman btw. Tall call your own mothers baby makers too???) Despite the fact that Izumi's mother hasn't even been mentioned by name in tlok. But yeah. She'd be afforded the respect she deserves I'm certain.
Aang is, on most accounts, supportive and respectful of Katara's opinions, even when he disagrees with them. Zuko openly mocks people who oppose him. I am going to make a longer post on the Southern Raiders episodes and how all of you watched that episode blindfolded or smth.
Aang comparing Appa being kidnapped (his last connection to his genocided people, the last vestige of his happy past) to Katara's anger over her mother is bad. But Zuko comparing mommy leaving his ass to Katara's mother getting brutally slaughtered in front of her ? Silence.
Aang supposedly needs Katara to mother him and that's a bad thing. But Azula, Mai and Ty Lee having to gentle parent Zuko almost everytime they interact is never talked about, despite the uncalled for verbal abuse that trio goes through from him.
Aang and Katara's 2 year age gap is creepy. But Zuko and Katara's 2 year age gap is fine. My bigest gripe with Zutara lovers is them completely erasing Katara's childishness and immaturity, in order for her and Zuko to have this mature, sexy relationship. She's 14, guys. 14.
This post really isn't meant to decry Zutara. I just want people who ship Zutara to get off their high horse of feminism and to accept that they're no better than the rest of us ship loving freaks. Wanting the main girl to bump uglies with the broody emo twink doesn't make you a modern day suffragette. Disliking a main canon pairing isn't a measure of your love for a female character.
Grow up.
Enjoy your ship like a normal person.
#caring for zutara doesn't equal caring for katara sit down#anti zutara#pro kataang#pro aang#pro katara#<this is the stupudest tag known to man#anti zuko#i didn't mean for it to come off like that but oh well#avatar#katara#aang#zuko

hi dear just wondering if you're taking request? If not then feel free to ignore me but I was wondering what or how would the yandere twisted wonderland boys react to a willing reader who actually finds there yandere tendencies hot and endearing and actually does not mind being locked up or the reader is just generally obsessed as they are with them hahaha sorry if it's to hard but if you find it uncomfortable then feel free to ignore me dear
Yandere-Obsessed | Yandere Twisted Wonderland x Reader
Malleus Draconia
“I will never let you leave my sights again!”
“Why would I ever?”
After nearly obliterating those he feels as though are a threat to your health
He snaps
With glowing green eyes, he refuses to let you go despite any protests you may have
But you have none
Immediately jumping into the near-dragon amalgamation’s arms as you lovingly rub your cheek against him
“I’m so happy, you feel the same!”
“Wait…does…this mean you purposefully orchestrated the incident?”
“Hehehe maybe?”
“...You love me as well?”
“Ohh Malleus I adore you!”
He’s near melting
You guys are the couple that sits in public places with hardly any space between you as your constantly looking into each other's eyes
Its a fight should anyone intervene
On both ends
Sebek’s reeling but he gains a whole lot of respect when you easily threaten his life
Malleus and you are in your own world
Most people don’t get killed only because you two are so focused on one another no one really penetrates your bubble
“My child of man it felt as if my heart was torn in two! I can breathe now that your in my arms again!”
“Oh Mal-Mal!”
Jack Howl
“W-wait (Y/n) i-its not what you think!”
“Really? It looks like that guy was suffocated to death and your burying him.”
“(Y/n)-”
“You can’t bury him yet until we remove any and all traces of you! See!? Your nail marks are a dead-giveaway!”
“Uh–”
“Here we should just burn this part that way no one will know!”
“T-thanks?”
“Of course, baby.”
He’s always felt guilty for the stuff he was doing in your name
But to see you his beloved, his mate assure him
Brings him an air of confidence
Now he knows that you acknowledge him and will even defend him
Like a true mate!
He’s so pleased he doesn’t have to fight you to accept him
Rather he’s fighting you from doing the same
It just makes him so embarrassed you care for him
“Love you don’t need to do away with the other contestants!”
“But look at your blush! You won’t mind it all that much you can step down from your high horse for me? Right?”
“...Fine b-but you promise to spend the rest of the night kissing me, right!?”
Idia Shroud
“Y-you knew I was watching? T-the whole time?!”
“Yup! I’m surprised you hardly noticed the ones I had on you!”
“W-what!?”
Any semblance of the love-obsessed mad scientist is diminished by your overwhelming display of love
He’s too busy reeling from that obsessed look you give him
He’s so easy to dominate from then on
Avidly obeying all your promises to terminate anyone who talks to him
All with a love-obsessed blush on his face
But even with your reciprocated love, he’ll eventually want for more
Whether he convinces himself you're faking it or that you are trying to outshine his love
He’s turning the tables on you
Coming up with something that will really blow your socks off
Something to show you he is the ultimate yandere in this relationship
“Darling, how clever you summoned the robots of S.T.Y.X to eliminate all your rivals. But believe me, I will do the same.”
“Hehe you misunderstand, muffin! They’re aren’t only here to eliminate my rivals but there also going to escort you to my love dungeon!”
“Love dungeon?”
“Yeah, how’s that for yandere!? I love you more than anyone even you can’t compete with me!”
Jamil Viper
“So if my suspicions are right you’ve been using snake whisper so that they’ll all stay away from me, right?”
“...”
“Don’t look so tense I wanted to thank you! And I wanted to ask if you noticed my own attempts to be noticed by you?”
“W-what?!”
He’s usually on top of it when it comes to knowing about you and hiding his feelings at the same time
But he completely skimmed over your various attempts to reciprocate his violent-obsessive tendencies
He’s reluctant to believe you
But when he does he’s falling even more in love
He plans to occupy all your time
And doesn’t mind when you start sleeping at Scarabia just to be closer to him
He loves it so much
He acts so much goofier because he’s falling in love all over again
“You better not be lying to me about this…”
“Trance me if you really want to know!”
“Maybe I will.”

Tilly & Finley Wild Manes Review
since i got a hold of these girlies lets investimigate- apologies for overexposure
first, individual pics of each of them. here's finley:
who is themed after a pool party, of course. when i bought her at target, the self checkout display called her Isla, which makes sense as a working name for her... island.
she is white with grey hooves and a muzzle. she has blue eyeshadow with green eyes and blonde eyebrows, matching her blonde hair with a purple streak.
i will color correct these photos for the wiki, but for now, here's the raw photo of her clothes
all of the clothes are unhemmed and simply printed-on fabric with two velcro connections. my finley also had a plastic tab keeping the front attatched (which i snipped so i could remove it). you can see her mermaid tail and flamingoes on her clothes. the clothing is very thin, i don't think it might fray any time soon, but it does seem lazy for a fashion horse toy. thankfully, the hair makes up for it, we'll get there later.
each of these horses came with a brush and a non-brush accessory. finley's is wearable! she has a visor made with this magenta translucent plastic. i didn't take any pictures of it on her, but it does indeed fit on her head.
she comes with this purple brush, which you can tell is hers because of the flamingo printed on it.
and now a quick tilly rundown...
she's a brown horse with a brown muzzle and hooves, red eyeshadow, yellow eyes, and blonde eyebrows. her hair is more of a dirty blonde than finley, and her color streak is described as "periwinkle". the self checkout register called her Serena, which... yeah, i can see why they may have changed that. a little on the nose.
as you can see by her brush's symbol, she's very clearly tennis-themed. her accessory is unfortunately not wearable, instead it's a water bottle with a tennis racket printed on
horse gotta hydrate
if that all wasn't clear enough, her outfit has a tennis racket on it, too! there is no hemming, the "collar" is printed on. her outfit looks like a blue polo and a teal skirt.
okay, now the part people actually wanted to see. what the heck the figures look like
it's gettin' hot in here, so take off all your clothes...
both finley and tilly have the same exact model! i assume the horses (ponies? horses. fillies?) all have the same bodies. i think i can feel a few spots where the plastic feels slightly more rubbery/pliable than the others, so i do fear we may see discoloration as time goes on.
all of the legs are articulated at the shoulder or "hip" (sorry horse fans, it's a knee or something?), but only the front left leg is articulated in multiple places.
thank you girls, finley has her leg fairly straightened out whereas tilly has it bent. i haven't noticed the joints being unusually difficult to maneuver or maintain position, which bodes well for pictures. i did have a little bit of trouble getting them to balance in my photobox (likely because the bottom bows inwards a bit), but the little extra range of motion is nice. you can also twist the joints a little bit, but not super extremely.
but can she sit?
sort of? i know horses don't really naturally "sit" very well, but she still looks goofy. her neck doesn't move forwards so it's not a very great-looking pose for her to hold, but she can balance like this on her own.
hey, look at me when i'm talkin to you
thanks. side view of her in that same pose.
her head can turn, it's on a ball join, i believe it's similar to the g4.5/g5 mlp joints but a little more restrictive. i intend to dismantle a finley for research, so ill be able to share that when the time comes. it can rotate and move up and down slightly.
more motion... one of the back legs is in a mid-walk position which made her a little awkward to balance. you can see the company name and "made in china" stamp on the inside of this leg.
it's not very clear in this image, but there's a stamp with numbers and letters on her stomach. i don't know what this means, as finley had the same code! you can also see the hooves have horseshoes with "WM" (wild manes) on them.
before we get into the manes of the wild manes, a quick little look at their eyes.
the paint looks great! it's not stippled like i've seen on a few other dolls recently. the eyes are also sculpted in, so we hopefully won't have wild misplacement like we do on the newer MLPs. they both have stars and two eye shines, and the eyelashes are the same. the only differences here are the colors.
okay. mane time.
the hair is SUPER soft. i agree with the replier who said it's Kiwi Nylon. i am very happy that the hair is so nice and hope that the others in this set are the same way! the way it's packaged in the box makes it so there are three or four rubber bands holding it in place, and it leaves the hair with the "memory" of that. i did wash and condition the hair in these photos, which also seemed to help with the small qualms i had with the hair right out of the box. it seemed a little oily and tilly had a doubled-over plug. finley didn't seem to have any rooting troubles!
all of the hair is a few rows up the back of the head with a section for bangs. you can see that they wove tilly's bangs with the longer hair that's part of her mane to hide the parting in her head, which is likely expected for a doll but a cool detail. her bangs are NOT gelled down!
here you can see five to six rows of hair on the back of the head. it's not a lot of surface area, but the hair seems thickly rooted for what it is!
here i've parted the mane on Finley so you can see the hair a little more clearly. it looks like the streaks of hair are only on the outside of the rooting.
i've been a little afraid to peel back finley's bangs lest they become unsalvagable, but here's finley's bangs peeled back.
there's still a few rows here. when i dismantle her, hopefully i can showcase her rooting pattern more clearly.
i think that's all the pictures i've taken of them so far... i got these girls at Target, and you can order them as well as Bailey and Cocoa off their site right now! i'll be updating the fandom wiki with pictures of the accessories and hopefully the rest of the girls are as high quality as these ones!

After the Horse Has Bolted
Fandom: My Lady Jane Pairing: Jane x Guildford Rating: T Word Count: 1899
Summary: Though they escaped execution, Guildford continues to struggle with his transformations and, worse, with dreams of losing Jane. A frank conversation with Susannah might help more than he expects it to.
He loves her like this, watching her move about the camp at twilight. She isn't the only person here with medical knowledge, and she lacks the experience to deal with more severe battle wounds, and some of the Ethians are steadfastly distrustful, but there are enough willing to let Jane close, and enough minor wounds, and, generally, enough patients to go around. Her skills are badly needed.
As Jane tends to people, Guildford feels a bit useless. Though he did try to help, he quickly realized it was all too unfamiliar for him to be of much use. Besides, these people don't extend the same welcome to him as they do Jane. He doesn't have her bedside manner, he supposes. Fuck them for finding him slightly jumpy and suspicious after one of their own (technically, one of his own, but fuck) attempted to murder him with iron manacles. But he thinks this without heat. These people are their allies—almost their only allies—and he's trying to see what Jane sees.
Mostly, he just likes seeing Jane. Jane in the early morning, scavenging in the woods for medicinal plants. Jane winning over strangers by sitting at their side to cut the thread of their stitches with her teeth instead sitting on the throne to sign a document they may never feel the benefit of. Jane alive. Guildford hasn't told her yet that he sees her differently when he closes his eyes. He sees her pristine white dress across the square, the black strip that blinds her. In his dreams, he watches helplessly as she kneels and the axe swings down. That's when he wakes up screaming her name.
Yeah, maybe that's another reason these people feel a little uneasy around him.
Except Susannah. Susannah's been marvellous. They've sort of met before—him below the stairs with the beautiful woman he would next see walking up the aisle of a church, her rushing down those stairs to warn Archer about the guards, then the night of the attempted assassination outside the old Ethian camp—but Susannah makes more of their acquaintance than it really is. She does it so the others will trust him, because they clearly trust her. They listen to her. It isn't long before Guildford learns it was Susannah who mustered the rescue party that saved his and Jane's lives, though he suspects as much even before it's confirmed. He sees their bond. He's grateful for it.
How grateful though, is the thing, when Susannah plonks herself down on the log where Guildford's seated, and follows his eyes, smirking to catch him gazing at Jane.
"D'you ever let your wife ride you?"
He can't look at her as he responds, "Just the once, escaping execution."
"Ah, y'know that's not what I mean."
"No, I don't know that," Guildford says stubbornly.
Susannah hunches forward and catches his eye.
"How come you're blushin' then?"
"Piss off."
"No."
He looks at her, and she's grinning. While Jane was raised a lady and Susannah supported herself in service, Guildford's found them to be cut from a very similar cloth. They're both unflinchingly bold when they want to be. Cautious, at other times, but not timid. Not everyone can tell the difference. He's been learning Jane, and is beginning to know Susannah, and he can tell she's teasing him for a reason. It might be friendly, or a protective test of Jane's husband's mettle, or something else. Whatever it is, Guildford realizes he's probably better off not trying to shut her out. They're persistent, these two women.
"Want to know why I'm asking?" Susannah prompts.
"I'm guessing you'll tell me."
"Very good!" She shifts closer and lowers her voice. "It's 'cause I've heard you screamin' your feckin' head off the last three nights."
"And you thought Jane was responsible?"
"Yeah, I hoped she was ridin' you like there's no tomorrow. Two reasons for that. You want 'em?"
"Terrific," Guildford says flatly.
"One," Susannah says, holding up a finger to show the count, "because back when Jane and I lived under the same roof, I was beginning to have serious concerns that she was never gonna let herself enjoy herself. It was a virgin you took to your marriage bed, Guildford, no question."
"You are nosy, aren't you?" He scowls at her, but Susannah stares back, unfazed.
"It's the same for her with me. If your hair wasn't curled already, she'd have stories to tell you that'd do the job."
"Please just get to your second reason."
Susannah sighs.
"If it's not Jane, somethin's troublin' you, and it can't go unaddressed. We can't have that. You'll either attract trouble to our camp or somebody already livin' in it'll stab you themselves to keep you quiet. Probably your wife."
Guildford sags. He knows she's right—the last thing he wants to be is a liability. He doesn't want to get anyone else hurt or killed. Especially Jane. Jane, who was sentenced to death for marrying him. Jane, who stood in the fire with him, the bond between them even stronger than the rope that wouldn't split. She would die for him. Without question, without thought, without hesitation. But he wouldn't survive getting her killed.
Susannah has fallen silent, apparently waiting for him to suggest a solution. Guildford doesn't know if this is an Ethian thing or just a Susannah thing: allowing that the person with the problem probably knows themselves best. He thinks it's likely that she's wrong in his case, believing himself the picture of stunted self-knowledge and repressed memories. He takes a deep breath. He can't be that man anymore. It doesn't do anyone any good, himself included.
"I keep dreaming she was executed. You and the Ethians don't come, and I can't get free of the ropes, and I see her beheaded." His own throat feels painfully thick as he forces the words out.
"I can see why that'd be botherin' you."
"It nearly happened," Guildford agrees.
"That's not why. I don't think it's about Jane."
"Of course it is!"
But Susannah's shaking her head.
"It's not her who's powerless, it's you. In the dream, you're tethered. Outside the dream, what is it you feel you can't control?"
Slowly, Guildford understands what she's getting at. He answers, "My transformation. My Ethianism." He narrows his eyes at Susannah. "You're very insightful."
"I'm not, actually. You just have a very straightforward problem: mental impotence. See it all the time in men. Tragic affliction."
He catches sight of her smirk and wants to shove her off the log.
"Have the two of you been able to fuck since the near-execution, by the way?" Susannah asks.
"Thank you for the advice, doctor," Guildford says sarcastically, head cocked to one side, "but that is really none of your concern. Try meddling in your own relationship."
"What relationship would that be?"
He frowns.
"Are you and Archer not...?"
"Archer?!" Susannah catches herself and continues more softly. "In his dreams. Not to be insensitive," she adds, making Guildford roll his eyes. "But no, definitely not. Trust me, if he'd been lucky enough to have me in his bed, he wouldn't have been lookin' at..."
It's far too obvious that Susannah has just caught herself again, but Guildford's glad she did. His trust in his wife is absolute. That doesn't mean he would appreciate Archer attempting to come between them. He rises, deciding to forget Archer and focus on Jane.
"Try the sex thing," Susannah says on their parting. "It might help, is all!"
"Try the minding your own business thing!"
Guildford actually does plan on trying something thanks to this conversation, but it's not sex. (Yet. Later? Gods, yes.)
He doesn't try to sleep that night, not yet. He lies on his back in the dark, listening to the low murmur of conversation from the lookouts tending the campfire, to the sound of his own even breathing. He stares up at the trees, their shapes black against the blue-black night. Sometimes, he stares past them at the stars.
Before dawn, Guildford gently rouses Jane from where she sleeps beside him. Between treating the injured and being startled awake by his screams, she hasn't been getting as much rest as she needs, but he hopes she'll understand. Taking her hand, he leads her to a clearing a short distance from the camp. Someplace they'll be able to see the sky change colour ahead of sunrise. They walk with soft steps. The yawn Jane can't stifle has the round, open notes of birdsong. Soon, real birds begin to sing. He wonders whether any Ethians are among them.
Gradually, everything brightens.
"Stand here," Guildford says, taking Jane's hands in his plea, then dropping them and backing off to a safe distance.
She doesn't argue. He's told her about his mother.
Before the light of day can rush across the horizon, Guildford closes his eyes and concentrates. There's no risk of imminent death to compel him now. He has to know if he can do it anyway. Instead of resisting thoughts of the past, he permits himself to recall how it feels to change, concentrating until the sensation is alive in him. Instead of disconnecting from the present, he inhales the earthy scent of the forest, shifts his boots on the ground, knows without looking that Jane is standing where he left her, waiting for him, trusting him.
He changes just before daybreak.
In this form, his hearing is keener, keen enough to pick up Jane's quiet gasp from across the clearing. His own steady breathing expands his strong lungs, drawing in details of his environment that are beyond his human senses. What he likes best is Jane's smile as she approaches him, the soothing strokes of her hands on his face. He stands there on four legs, enjoying her gentle touch and the heat of the sun on his flank, then, closing his eyes to the world once more, Guildford changes back.
He's stumbling forward into Jane's arms before he realizes he never moved away from her before trying to transform. Obviously, his human form is smaller and therefore less of a hazard, but Guildford isn't convinced that was the ruling instinct. It felt more like... he just knew he could do it. He was sure of himself, in that body and in this one, and in whatever he is during the fleeting moment in between.
"Guildford! How did you do that?" she demands, full of awe and urgent curiosity. "I haven't seen you control it since the night we escaped the Tower!"
Yes, that's true. After bearing her away from that place, he turned back into a man. That's how he was when the Ethians found them, and how he remained through the night. At dawn, he despaired, once again becoming a horse against his will. It persisted. Day, horse. Night, man. The terrible dreams. This morning has been Guildford's first time taking the reins, so to speak. It's a colossal relief, and he looks lovingly into Jane's eyes, knowing she understands that much, even if she can't yet explain the rest.
It seems to him that the best words to say are, "I've always wanted to kiss you at daybreak."
"That's a lot of effort for a kiss," Jane observes.
"Then you'd better make it worth it," he retorts with a grin.
And he holds her, and she does.

One of the firsr times MK actually sees Luzhen acting serious and maturely is during the New Years fiasco. When Wukong got captured by the Spider Queen, Luzhen has wanted to go to him immediately but Wukong had mad him swear to make sure MK and his friends are safe first so he ended up with the team that went to the Celestial Realm, this ended up being a benefit because that means they had someone familiar with he place.
He and MK ended up pairing up to get the Furnace, but they both ended up trapped inside. While they were there, Luzhen had a lot of memories and regrets from long ago pop up, being in the same device that was once used to torture and nearly kill his older brother. The Furnace that took Wukong away from him. And MK notices this during his own self-deprication episode.
MK, feeling bad for himself: This is all my fault, why did I ever think I could ever do this!? I can't ever live up to the Monkey King!
Luzhen, quietly and turned away from MK: Yeah, I know the feeling, kid.
MK, realizing for the first time he wasn't ghe only one trapped: Huh? Luzhen!?
Luzhen: Yeah. I'm stuck here too, kid.
MK: Oh great, not am i useless. but I got the Monkey King's brother trapped there too!
Luzhen: Kid, it's not like that. I'm in here... because I jumped in on my own. Same as you.
MK: You... jumped in on your own? Why!?
Luzhen: Aw, c'mon kid, you know the story don't you? How did Dage get his Eyes of Truth?
MK: The gods put him here, in an effort to burn the immortality elixir out of him... right? Only instead of killing him he got gold vision.
Luzhen, nodding: For nearly fifty celestial days and night my brother anguished in here, burning alive from the heat of a primordial flame... all because I made a mistake that he took the fall for.
MK, suddenly realizing: Oh...
Luzhen, quietly, eyes dtill fixated on the corner wall: Wukong... I owe hin so much. He's my older brother, he always took care of me... protected me. I knew he was special, even moreso than me, and I swore I would repay him his kindness and care one day by making sure everyone knew thay. I hadn't meant to hurt anyone but... Wukong was so shy and timid back then, still is in some ways. So when he learned the truth about how much of an insult the position of Biwamen actually was and was going to just... let it go... I snapped.
MK: Are you saying you're the one who... caused the Havoc?
Luzhen: No. I caused the events that led to the Havoc. I'm the one who threatened the dragon gods and removed my brother's name from the Book of the Dead, I'm the one to let all the horses loose and then declared for all to hear that Wukong was the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. Everything that happened after... *Luzhen shakes his head as he starts to get emotional* I owed my brother everything, but my stupid, reckless actions were what led to his downfall.
MK, worried about the implications: Luzhen... why did you jump in here?
Luzhen: ...I-I don't know... *huffs in hysterical amusement* I guess... I guess wanted to. No... I needed to know. What he went through in here, to try to get an idea of what I did to my brother. See what it was like for myself. The stories say that he survived because he his himself in this corner right here. *points to the side he was facing, where a very old imprint of scratch marks lay, as though something had been clawing at the walls* It's marked by the wind trigram and had less of the fire. That it was his cleverness that let him succeed... but I know my brother.
*Luzhen runs an hand along some of the faded scratches*
Luzhen: Wukong wanted to make sure he could come home... the only reason he survived was because he was determined to make it home to us... to me.
Luzhen may not have known it at the time but hearing his own thoughts on the Furnace and how Wukong had survived had inadvertently given MK the push he needed to find a way to get them both out. After all, if Wukong had survived being in here for that long to get back to his family, the least they could do was escape the damned thing and save him in return! Both MK and Luzhen have a silent pact not to bring up what happened in the Furnace or the conversation they had up, What Happened in the Furnace, Stayed in the Furnace.
YEE
Luzhen is such an interesting character to unpack in this au simply due to his role as the "dodged culprit" in the Havoc in Heaven. And he's never forgiven himself for it.
He's suffered the ultimate pain of being the younger brother who Wukong would do anything for. Nearly losing him.
A lot of MK's feelings of unworthiness are mirrored in Luzhen, who's lived his entire life as a mere shadow to his brother, not even believed to be a real person by many.
His big bro's successor is a good kid. Not like him. He shouldn't have to worry about this junk,
Though I love the idea that they spent the time in the Furnace hashing out emotional issue they have, and both agree that "Furnace-stays in the Furnace"

Special Halloween Party Event
Chapter 1: Summoning Ritual
This is a rough translation of the story. You may encounter minor errors on the way, please be understanding and considerate (*´ω`*) With that being said, enjoy reading!
October has arrived, the season of Halloween is upon us. The mansion is lively, pondering what kind of Halloween we'd do for this year. One day... Me, Berrien and Miyaji are waiting for a "certain someone" in front of the mansion's door.
Clop... Clop... Clop...
Berrien: Oh, Elvira-sama's carriage has arrived.
Miyaji: She said she has an urgent request according to her written letter... I wonder what exactly happened.
I hope it's nothing too serious.
Elvira-san comes down from the coachman seat as I said that.
Elvira: Pardon me for my abrupt visit, Master of Devil butlers.
Greetings.
Elvira: Things have gotten a tad troublesome on my end...
???: Looks like the horses have stopped?
???: Have we arrived~?
???: Piano-chan, do you want a cookie?
???: Can I? Thank you ♡
T-This voice...
Miyaji: There are children inside the carriage...?
Berrien: Their voices sound quite adorable.
Elvira: I suppose it'd be quicker to show you.
"Kitty-chan..."
Eh!?
K-Kitty-chan...
Elvira: Could you come down from the carriage? I'll open the door now.
Kitty: Okay ♪
*Door opens*...
Kitty: Hello! I am Kitty! Nice to meet you!

It's the real Kitty-chan...
Berrien: Aruji-sama, do you know this person?
Yeah.
Elvira: I get it now... It appears that Kitty-chan and the others were summoned from your world.
Berrien: Summoned...?
Elvira: I'll explain the situation.
[According to Elvira-san's story... Another witch performed a certain summoning ritual... And as a result, Kitty-chan and her friends were summoned to this world from the looks of it. The magical effect is only temporary... So they can soon return to their original world in a few weeks... But the witches' territory is an extremely harsh environment... So they were brought here to the Devil's Palace.]
Miyaji: In short... The urgent request is to take care of these children for a few weeks?
Elvira: Indeed, it is.
Please be careful not to attract people's attention to them just in case.
I apologize for having this matter imposed on you.
I'll leave the rest on your hands, Master of Devil butlers.
U-Umm... Y-Yes...
Kitty: Elvira-chan, you're going home?
Elvira: Yes... These people will be very considerate to you.

Elvira: Well then... I'll be leaving now.

[We held a strategy meeting at the foyer after welcoming everyone from the carriage.]
Miyaji: I'll be giving them sweets to eat in the cafeteria first, but... What should we do next?
Berrien: Indeed. We have to inform the other butlers about the situation...
Kitty: Excuse me~
Wah!
Kitty: Oh, I'm sorry for surprising you.
Berrien: Kitty-chan... Right? Is there something troubling you?
Kitty: Can I know everyone's name if possible?
What's your name?
I'm [Player Name].
Kitty: Your name is lovely ♡ Are you the master of devil butlers?
You're right.
Kitty: So that means you're the master of this giant mansion. That's amazing!

Flure: I don't have the slightest idea at all...

Lato: Mm? Miyaji-sensei, and there's Aruji-sama and Berrien-san too.
What are you doing...
Wait, oh? Who might these little guests be?
Kitty: Hello ♪ I'm kitty!

This mansion will be holding a Halloween party!?
Flure: N-No... Err... We still haven't decided on a party exactly...
Kitty: Actually, we were talking about Halloween while on our way here ♪
Could Kitty join the party too if possible?

Miyaji: It seems they're following how we act... So Cinnamon and the others are also calling you with "Aruji-sama".
Role-playing as butlers, correct?
Cinnamon: Yup!
[Cinnamon laughed with Miyaji after he said that. Seems like they have gotten close. I asked about the costumes that I've been so curious about ever since I entered the room.]
