#because they see a man of color w vaugely long hair and go ah yes i will she/her#this character without thinking of the various compound biases probably encouraging me to do so @glitching-desert-snake
Can I bring up these tags for a sec actually?
I have a lot of...complicated feelings about how race is brought up in the danger days verse/fandom bc 1. it's not handled well in the source material to begin with (see the blatant villainization of eastern Asians in the mvs, the white-washing of The Girl in the comics, etc.) and 2. bc this is connected to MCR, a great many of the fans are hailing from emo bandom, which is a notoriously racist space!
So we're already working with a group of people who generally aren't going to be thinking about the implications of racial headcanons and how they interact with gender and stereotypes.
The thing is however, there's a SIZEABLE portion of the danger days fandom who are (and I say this with affection, if not a small amount of annoyance) baby gays. Teenagers who want to put gender headcanons on everything they can bc they want to see themselves in their stories/fuck around with gender in fiction and again, aren't thinking about the implications of their various racial and gender headcanons.
How many people are actually aware of the extensive history of Latino (and in the continental US, Native) men simultaneously being feminized/emasculated AND portrayed as disgustingly and overbearingly masculine/threat to white women due to having long hair?
And how many of you draw Jet Star, who is portrayed by a light-skinned mixed Puerto Rican man, as SIGNIFICANTLY darker skinned to make him more 'visibly ethnic' while keeping the rest of the cast white as all hell?
What some of you need to understand is that:
Having long hair, especially as a man of color, is not automatically GNC or feminine.
There are a lot of implications when you take a predominantly white story, mix it with a predominantly white fandom, and then try to slap racial and gender headcanons onto that without examining the foundations on which the story is built.
This all gets worse when you combine it with the danger days fandom/bandom's long-standing tendency to make Jet Star/Ray Toro the 'mom friend' in fanworks, which is just entirely fucking racist. A lot of people take a look at a real-life man and a character he plays-who doesn't have a single line of dialogue in either the mvs or the comics to give us a characterization-and say "yeah this is a 'mom friend', like every other person of color in media I like."
THAT SAID. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with slapping weird genders onto stupid comic book characters. In fact it's really fun and I do it regularly! But I'm also coming at this from the angle of 1. giving all the characters weird genders, not just one of the two people of color in the danger days cast and 2. I'm literally a light-skinned trans mixed Puerto Rican dude.
No, this is not a 'write only what you know' situation. It's a 'think for a hot second about the implications of gender and racial headcanons and how your biases are influencing what you're putting in your art'.
There's nothing wrong with using she/her for Jet Star. But if that's the only character you're focusing on for gender headcanons and specific racial headcanons, think about why, and then knock that shit off.
why do people always use she/her for jet star?
#sebastian speaks#twice as shiny#danger days#I could say a lot more about how I love love love when people do racebending and HATE it when no one puts any thought into it besides like#brownie points for putting some brown people in their work#I personally make most of the killjoys black or chicano in my works bc like they're in the desert outside LA. they gonna be chicano#I also headcanon Jet Star as non-binary and using both he/him and she/her#partially bc I think it's a cool way to examine gender in a setting where there isn't strictly terminology for that shit#and also bc I briefly used he/him and she/her and it's fun#BUT I'M ALSO making literally all the other 'joys trans and keeping the racial headcanons consistent#i make them brown bc im tired of white people#some people make them brown bc they want diversity points

Two-Bit has said I love you to multiple people throughout the course of his life but only ONE of them has ever reciprocated it. (Or did he?) you decide. I wrote this to throw you in for a loop and or to see if you would like it.
1. When he was five and it was the night before his dad left he said it to him. Only to be greeted with empty silence and a small yet tired smile.
2. To Darryl when he was fifteen and the two of them were still in HS together. He said it the night during the homecoming dance. Darry played it off like Two was drunk (even though they both knew better) and didnât talk about it after.
3. He said it to Dallas once when he turned seventeen. It was a slip of the tongue, he didnât even mean to say it. But Dallas in the evening seemed to sparkle like one of those stars that Ponyboy was always talking about. Dallas found this amusing, he didnât tease two but he didnât say it back either. Instead it became a hook-up, just like it always did with those two.
4. Marcia, the first girl he ever really set his eyes on. Who was a Soc but was so pretty and sweet that she was hard not to fall for. Someone who he properly courted and took out. No this wasnât just a mere hookup for two, it was something more. But Two never did have any luck when it came to love. He says it to her, sober and so softly you almost couldnât hear him. Yet Marcia looked at him with her soft and apologetic brown eyes. She didnât say anything, but she didnât have to. After all socâs and greasers are like oil and water right?
5. The last I love you that Two-bit says starts out like the first one. Except heâs no longer five, and heâs no longer waiting for anyone to say it back. This time heâs nineteen years old, heâs a little older and a little more sober. Itâs been a year since Dallas and Johnny both passed on. He isnât quite the drunken and reckless boy who he use to be. That doesnât stop him from having his moments though. Such as tonight where he had a little too much to drink. He feels his knees give weigh and collapse underneath him. He feels like heâs falling until suddenly he isnât. Heâs being hold up by something- no someone. His eyes soften as he notices those dark curls from anywhere.
He smiles wide, showcasing his shape white teeth. He cracks a joke about him falling for the boy. The boys blue eyes shine in the night, and for just a second you can catch the amusement in them. The Boy helps to walk him back home. And maybe because itâs drunk that those words slip out again.Or maybe heâs just a kid who still hasnât grown up yet. But when he says the words âI love youâ, this time though he isnât met with silence.Instead the boyâs blue eyes soften just slightly.Itâs a softness that the Shepardâs leader hardly ever shows outside to his own kin. After all to be soft on the east side is a luxury that few can afford.
The boy doesnât say anything back, but the simple gesture says it all.
So no Two-Bit Matthews is not lucky when it comes the field of love. But on this night he starts to learn that perhaps thereâs a different kind of love to look for. A love that while might not be conventional, is no less precious to him.
yknow what??? look, what i love about the two bastards is that they r DEFINITELY not romantic in the way that other two but ships r, but it could b just as passionate as them, its like tally but like,,,,not as fucked upâ€ïž
im clawing at the bars of my enclosure at the last line actually
BUT PLEASE!!! two bit has 2 hands, we all need to get together and help him grow more so he can have all of em!!!
let me b delusional and say that the reason y darry didnt say anything back was partially bc he was 17 and didnt want a 15 year old crushing on him, make him regret it and maybe they get together in the future,,,or at least theres something there,,,,
marcia and two bit, u guys r like romeo and juliet to me, at LEAST let them kinda keep in contact but like from a far,,,i beg,,, (can u tell im coping)

A Complete Guide To Chaotic Academia
bc its my fav aesthetic and there is not enough content about it
Outfits
most people say that chaotic academia is just dark academia but a little bit more messy, and, well, chaotic. the truth is, chaotic academia is A LOT more messy than dark academia. you can still use dark academia as kind of a "base", but you are going to replace your blazers with flannels, your turtlenecks with tshirts. as for pants, you can go with litteraly anything: cigarette pants, tailored trousers, ripped-up jeans or normal black leggings. i personally really ike ripped up overalls bc they give that "i dont really give a damn, im so misunderstood, my parents didnt love me, im a crazy lonely introverted teenage child" vibe...idk. whatever you wear, make sure you feel comfortable in it! even tho in chaotic academia there are almost no rules at all, here are some things that might help you!
colours: any earthy tones are fine, brown, caramel, dark green, dark red, white, etc etc
fictional characters that might inspire you:
-remus lupin
- any dpc character
- jess mariano
- sydney novak
accesories: flannels (a personal fav + they make even the most boring fit look better), cardigans, converse (bonus points if you draw/write on them or if you have them laced in a weird way), bracelets or necklaces that mean something to you, harry potter back packs, tote bags...
hairstyles: whatever you want, just make sure your hair is ALWAYS messy, looking like you just fucking woke up
Activities and Traits
ok now we're getting to the actually important part bc (repeat after me): chaotic academia is not about how you look, its about how you live and how you act. so here r some thing that might help:
- annotating books with the most unhinged random thoughts
- learning poetry or speeches word for word but not remembering most of the things for school
- studying in the (school) library and being besties with the librarian (optional)
- leaving notes (on trees, mailboxes or library books) for strangers to find
- "studying while listening to classical music" and then instead of studying you end up agressivly mouthing your favorite song
- im sure yall already heard this one, but yes, swearing and slag while discussing deep academic topics is incredibly important
- speaking of important topics: posting something important on social media knowing no one will read it
- doodles on your hands 24/7 (NO SUSAN, I DONT GIVE A DAMN THAT ITS BAD FOR MY SKIN)
- sarcasm. a lot.
- random thoughts
- random quotes
- knowing a ton of conspiracy theories that you dont even beileve in by heart
- listening to all different types of podcasts
- one day reading the classics, the next ya fantasy and day after that ao3 smut
- multifandom, multishipper
- tea/coffee addiction
- adding b.c. to todays date when writing it in school
- random thoughts and the weirdest annotations in your school notebooks, especially the classes that you find boring
- "going to the bathroom" and then spending half of your math class drawing/reading/smoking/crying/thinking/whatever the fuck you wanna do there bc ur tired of everything
- stealing random stuff from stores (tho it is not encouraged blah blah blah)
- watching gilmore girls every fall
- telling people ur favorite colour is green even tho it isnt just to let them know that ur gay
- reading in class, on breaks, at home, parks, meetings, aethletic events, and generally all the fucking time
- doing (mostly) everything last minute
- bad at photography, but you enjoy it
- cold tea my beloved
- wearing one item every day: it can either be a necklace, a flannel, a bracelet, a badge, headphones, earrings etc etc
- extremely messy handwriting, always writing with black pen
- crying at least once a day, but only when ur alone, being super emotional but never showing it
- hobbies include reading, screaming in your pillow, learning unique languages that you will probably never use, rewatching dead poets society, harry potter, enola holmes, end of the fucking world and gilmore girls
- massive bookworm, reads all the time, always has a book with them
- skipping class, not that often tho
- đ«anger issuesđ«
- hyperactive and lazy at the same time
- uses big words but makes fun of other people when they do it
- writes (rebellious) book quotes everywhere, every single one of their notebooks had IF WE BURN, YOU BURN WITH US written in them lol
- random useless powerpoints
- analysing taylor swift's folklore and evermore instead of sheakspeare because its just better
- retired almost-emo, had a phase when they wore black and acted all mysterious but were never really emo i cant explain it
- likes mcr. this one speaks for itself.
- gay and sad. no explanation needed.

im not even a major dunk & egg fan but i. still legit can't believe that they deadass cast a white man to portray baelor breakspear who is CANONICALLY NONWHITE. HE IS VISIBLY BROWN. HE IS A VISIBLY BROWN MIXED RACE TARGARYEN. & HE WAS THE LITERAL HEIR TO THE IRON THRONE. like. ppl get all stuck up that pedro pascal who plays oberyn martell is "spicy white" or w/e the fuck but ignore the sudanese actor, the indian actress, the black actresses, etc etc etc etc. like. the whole show franchise created an environment that encouraged casting for characters of color but when it comes to the targaryens they portray them as all white except for baela & rhaena in hotd & they barely do anything with them & its. genuinely infuriating. it's obvious cherry picking on their part bc OF COURSE they don't want to center characters of color when they could have pretty white people main characters. ie the velaryons & the dragon twins ie baela & rhaena being casted as black & mysaria & being sidelined by the writers & as an indigenous writer of color that's insulting. actors & characters & fans of color deserve so much fucking better than this bullshit. it's just racist colorist bs atp & i'm so tired of people making excuses for these writers. & you STILL see people say "dOrNe Is wHiTe!!!!!!!" or "tHe NoRtH cAnT pOsSiBlY bE InDiGeNoUs CoDeD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" while they BOTH literally experience inworld fantasy racism & then people STILL continue to pretend to act like both dorne & the north aren't treated differently than the rest of the seven kingdoms lmaoooooooooooo.
#ooc.#i am. So Annoyed#but honestly as an indigenous poc im not even surprised anymore lmao#& i still see ppl go like ''oh but he's never rly described!!'' but. there are people literally siding with daemon blackfyre BECAUSE#baelor looked ''too dornish'' for their racist minds to comprehend. that's literally the entire reason why the blackfyre rebellions happen#& not to mention aegon / egg & his siblings are literally 75% dornish through both maekar AND dyanna dayne which. is a LOT#the casting choices were DELIBERATE & INTENTIONAL#& EVERY TIME we have a nonwhite targaryen or otherwise nonwhite character they're ALWAYS on the fucking sidelines. FUCK that#like. i figured black & brown & otherwise nonwhite targaryens were wishful thinking bc we KNOW the show loves them white as shit#(& honestly most of the fandom & rpc is like this too be fucking for real) but like jesus christ this is literally embarrassing lmao#/ vent#/ racism

i donât mean what iâm saying with malice, however, can you please stop putting all your inbox asks regarding the issue of listener designs on the main tag. i understand you want people to know about this issue (if this is your intention), but all youâre doing is making the artists who draw as a hobby feel bad, and just adding negativity to the main tag. i understand how it feels to not see yourself represented, but thatâs where you come in. for those wanting rep, you can either draw it yourself or if you canât draw it and are so adamant on wanting rep, commission and support an artist! consistently complaining wonât get anything done but draw artists away from the fandom itself and make art we see for these characters we all love become sparse and less.
additionally, listeners, at the end of the day, are us. if an artist is an afab female, chances are that listener will also be an afab female. some artists may not draw pocs not because they just donât want to, but because they arenât well-versed in depicting their features and donât want to do it an injustice. thereâs no need to rush to the worst possible and negative explanation. i have never seen myself represented in a single piece of redacted fanart, however i know better than to just nonsensically complain about it â because complaining wonât get anything done (itâll only do more harm if anything).
thank you for making your points known, and i hope what iâm saying comes across to you as i intended it to
Out of respect, I did remove the unnecessary posts from the tags bc they did clog up the main tag (my bad, but also if its that bothersome, you can literally scroll past it, your not obligated to read everything)
Iâm not slamming anyone or shaming people, that was never the intention here. It was to make light on how some artists choose to make characters (not self inserts) white simply bc of mainstream/kinda racist ideas that characters in media can only be portrayed as white to be popular or liked bc of white beauty standards. I want people to reflect and think about that, but I never said ppl *couldnât* make them white or afab. Im not trying to gatekeep or force people to suddenly get rid of all their white characters just bc i said there isnât enough representation
Also *I do* have characters for fandom rep, I have lots of them. The only reason why I donât post them is because they arenât finished yet. But whatâs wrong with having an opinion on something? You have to admit, people wouldnât be in my inbox telling that *I* have to create the representation needed and that my opinion is hurting everyoneâs feelings if I was a white creator. Just think about that
Also im sorry but the whole âsome ppl dont draw poc characters cause they dont know how to!â is an argument thats just very fucking tiring to hear. It truly isnât that hard, like im being serious. There are *a lot* of free recourses out there to learn if your super keen on learning how to draw the different ethnic facial features. But if you wanna create a black/brown person for example, this is what you do; draw the character, make their skin color a darker brown. Congratulations! Youâve made a poc character! Ladies and gentlemen its really not that difficult, if your not willing to challenge yourself on how to draw different types of people or your too scared to- its gonna stunt your growth as an artist
This was the first time I opened up about an opinion I had seeing in this fandom, so idk what you mean by âconsistently complainingâ when this whole situation has only happened once (for me)

I know the topic is a bit old but I want to comment on a topic. I have white skin, blonde and green/blue eyes, but I hate myself. I think brunettes always look better. That's why Erling may have made such a choice or more importantly, he liked her personality. Ahh whatever. I'm so tired of the beauty standard set by society // totally valid. As humans we donât see ourselves the same way other people do. Im brown (north african) and I grew up in italy and Ive always hated the way my skin was since I was a kid, I just wanted to be white like my other friends and thought less of myself bc of it. Growing up especially in hs and now people always tell me they wished they could have my skin color or have my tan etc but I still donât fully like myself. U have people going beyond their ways to look like you but you want to look like them. If you have curly hair you want straight hair, if u have straight hair you want wavy/curly hair. Im also very skinny, when I was younger everyone like teachers or others would make comment about it and say that i should eat more not knowing that I just dont gain weight easily and that im not unhealthy or starving myself, I gained a bit of weight in my late teens but im still skinny and I get people saying they wished they were skinny like me while I look at them and they have the perfect average sized body that I dream to have. It doesnât matter what we are giving in life itâs very hard to like ourselves for what we are so donât feel bad for how you feel, letâs just all work to become the best version of ourselves which is the one where we absolutely love and adore our features. Thereâs that quote from Billieâs song that says âIf I could change the way that you see yourself, you wouldnât wonder why youâre here, they dont deserve youâ and I think it fits perfectly.
LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!!!!! perfectly said anon!!! THANK YOU for sharing this!! đ«¶đŒ - arlene

do you have any thoughts on how dune approaches and uses islamic language and concepts? genuinely curious bc i feel like there are lots of layers to the situation
ok so before anything i gotta state a few things so no one on here acts a fool: this is MY opinion as a brown practicing muslim whos like halfway thru the first book and has seen the villeneuve movie like 4 times. so,
as i said i cant rly talk about the book(s) cause i havent finished it/them but ive seen the movie. here is my general feeling about it : it felt good to me. TO ME. yes my standards are awfully and scarily low but im so fucking tired of seeing us portrayed as tyrans, terrorists, Bad Desert Guys, that Dune felt GOOD. im an african melting pot of several countries and ethnicities but im mainly north african and specifically from the edge of the Sahara, i have touareg roots. ive heard some people say the fremen are a bastardized version of us, but i PERSONALLY didnt think so. it was a shame that stilgar was played by javier bardem tho, wouldve been great if they casted an african or middle eastern actor instead.
now all that isnt even an answer to ur question im sorry skfhkd but i just felt like saying that it felt. good. now more specifically about the way some parts of dune were heavily inspired by islam and islamic language.
to me, again, TO ME. it also felt good. i didnt see a problem with it, becausz it wasnt mocked or misused or anything, like. most religions have the concept of messiah. most religions have prophecies. again, dune didnt mock any religious or spiritual concept. there ARE layers to this but to me none of them felt insulting. when we see in the movie fremen pilgrims praying and meditating for a few seconds, i felt so warm bc. its me!!! its what i do!!! and its on screen!!! and its not used as a way to degrade or ridicule the people practicing it!!!!!
i'll finish this by saying that even if i havent finished reading the books....isn't dune supposed to be criticism about white people invading the middle east for oil anyway???? like. the fremen arent the bad guys. theyre PAINTED by the harkonnen as the bad guys. yes YES i know paul atreides is a white savior but tbfh i couldnt care less like this fucking book was written in the 60s lmao
anyway i hope at least some of this makes sense bc im rly tired and also i almost broke my ankle today so im in pain rn lmao but yea thats a general summary of my feelings about all that. it probably doesnt cover everything i have to say but thats all for now
again before anyone opens their throat at me : i have not finished the books, im brown and muslim myself, and most importantly its fiction. i have real problems. i better not see any white or non muslim people clowning on this post trying to explain to me what islamophobia is. thank u <3

I feel so conflicted about the Sumeru character leaks. On one hand, it would be super nice to have characters with darker skin tones/complexions, to add both representation and also some design diversity. On the other hand, itâs a little odd to see people losing their minds over the designs. I mean, you reblogged a post that showed a lot of proof that people with lighter skin tones can, did, and do exist in the countries Sumeru is based off of. And there are lots of POC who have lighter skin tones! We deserve representation as much as any other POC. Calling light-skinned POC âwhiteâ erases a lot of the struggles we go through. (And to be perfectly honest, I donât want even white people to feel bad about themselves).
I understand the frustration though. It would be really nice if Hoyoverse made characters with darker skin colors, and I want everyone to be able to see themselves represented by their favorite characters. But light-skinned POC exist, and genshin players calling characters that represent us gross just because they donât like light skin color is disgusting.
i 100% share the sentiment. im tired of people calling liyue, inazuma and now sumeru characters white just bc they're light-skinned/"white-passing", ans their overall obsession with dark-skinned poc as if they're the only valid ethnic minorities??
it's a big issue in the genshin fandom, but also in the anime community as a whole imo. i talked about it before but as a black person myself i absolutely hate when people draw over characters' design to add the most stereotypical black features (comically big mouth and nose, for example) and call it representation or even worse, fixing the design ESPECIALLY if they're already poc. i saw a white person do this on twitter, while completely ignoring the actual black ppl who told them that it was closer to blackface or minstrel shows that representation. and im worried this mentality will be even more present with sumeru, as everyone is somehow losing their shit over the characters' skin color as if it's the only factor that makes you a poc. the obsession over black and brown people makes me so uncomfortable tbh
im gonna be honest. im exhausted, completely tired by this community, and if i see another white person throw a tantrum over this issue for brownie points im gonna become violent
anyway, i hope this shit calms down quickly and people just... move on, bc it's honestly the least of our problems as poc, whether might or dark skinned. not to mention, once again, that this is hyv, a chinese company, literally what did people expect sighs

Ngl, Iâm not really happy about The Winchesters being picked up even though I expected it. Jensen has made it very clear that weâre not his intended audience, so I doubt a lot of us would actually like it. Itâs probably just gonna be a newer version of the first three seasons of supernatural but with more women and poc. And Iâm sorry but even his attempts at diversifying the cast doesnât seem genuine to me. Iâm definitely not saying itâs a bad thing but it seems like heâs trying to get brownie points or fill some sort of quota.
First off anon Im so sorry, i was planning to answer and then forgot.
I pretty much feel the same. Marginalised people getting to see themselves in media is a good thing, so them having a queer guy and a woman of colour in the main cast is a good thing on paper. However a lot of people (including me and you) have the weird feeling that theyre doing this for clout and bc they think marginalised people will take any scraps theyre given.
Ofc we have no way of confirming this suspicion and we may be waaay off base, but i dont get tired of talking about how ive been here for a decade and ive seen jackles be weird around gay shit on spn, the most recent example being the very weird no homoing of the confession by calling it "holier than human love" or something. i dont think hes a straight up homophobe, but you will excuse me for being suspicious of his motives here.
also yeah he literally said people who werent gonna watch the prequel arent real fans, which was OBVIOUSLY a joke, i get it, but idk what hes expecting when he makes a prequel about john winch.
i think jackles is a lot more fandom savvy than he lets on, he definitely knows that the destiel/gay/not straight white american part of the fandom doesnt like john, so specifically the inclusion of a bi man and a brown woman feels like hes trying to bait that part of the fandom into watching the prequel anyways and it just sucks that we have reason to feel like our identities are deliberately being used to increase viewership.
if he wants to make a little show about john fucking winch and rewrite him into a better person than he canonically was, i cant stop him, but i see very very little chance of me paying any attention to this show once it airs and if that makes me "not a real fan". uh. idc lmao.
and what i find a bit annoying is people trying to guilt trip others who say they wont watch it bc "if this show fails jackles might not get to make other, better spn related shows". im glad you still havent given up hope, but im not waiting for jackles to come up with a stellar spn spinoff or a destiel show or whatever when his first and best idea for a spn related show was "prequel about two characters we literally already know everything about, one of which is hated by a big part of the fandom". I hope the actors can use this to jumpstart their careers, but other than that this can get cancelled after one season for all i care...
#i am ready to admit i was wrong if the show ends up being good#but as of right now i have close to 0 evidence that its gonna be anything other than boring and a-canonical#ask#anon#jary prequel#m

Do you have any fan casts or strong takes/feelings on the foxesâ appearances? Fandom tends to use the same Pinterest models, which feels wrong to me.
i do in fact! i've actually been meaning to make a post about how i choose to write all of the foxes' ethnicities anyway
but yes i absolutely agree that the typical pinterest model types u generally see on edits is not how i see any of them. nor is reece king or froy gutierrez or lucky blue smith one of my FCs for anyone
for a lot of them i don't necessarily have a single specific FC so much as i have like,, a general impression of features that i will see on various different people, who all may look wildly different from each other or who may not even look how i see the character as a whole but do have a specific feature i associate with them. mostly it boils down to the Energy i get tbh and that's just a Feeling i cant even explain
fun fact im a tiny bit face blind so that might account for some of why i'm so all-over about this
may as well go chronologically. some of them i definitely have more thoughts on than others
1. Dan
ethnicity: Afro Native (Sioux)
features: medium dark skin. buzzcut, killer fade. she often styles it in waves. she's very butch, wears a lot of basketball and cargo shorts, tank tops and flannels and jerseys, hiking boots. skinny but muscular, with a very rectangular body shape. defined jaw. probably like 5'4 or 5'5
FC/Energy: sometimes i get some dan energy out of janelle monae but more butch. lotta dan energy out of samira wiley. lashana lynch
2. Kevin
ethnicity: a lot of things tbd, but he's pretty multi-ethnic. i like the idea of kayleigh being half- or a quarter-japanese in addition to irish because it gives her more of a reason to go to japan for her undergrad. wymack is from d.c. which is a majority black city for its actual residents, but i also like the idea of him being Pasifika/Hawaiian. HOWEVER - and this is pretty important to my read of kevin's character - he's white passing, and has been mostly treated as a white guy who tans his whole life, like occasionally asked if he's italian maybe. learning that his father was a Distinctly Not White Man was a big shock to him.
kristin kreuk, lindsay price, phoebe cates, and marie digby are all half-asian actresses i base kayleigh on
i suppose i base his story partially on broadway actress carol channing, who revealed publically that she was a quarter black when she was like 80 years old. though maybe wentworth miller, a biracial actor who knows his father is black but also doesn't know him, is more accurate to kevin's story. then keanu reeves is a white passing actor with asian ancestry
also none of these people look anything like how i picture kevin lol. kevin is just like,, a guy. handsome ig. but kind of in a CW character kind of way
actually
kevin looks exactly like young jason momoa
3. Andrew
ethnicity: kayin/karen from myanmar
features: fat and muscular, very wide and heavy. this blog is basically all andrew body type refs. medium-olive skin, has a bit of a greyish tinge that makes him look a bit eerie or unhealthy. deep set, droopy eyes; looks so tired. flat face with a low-bridged nose. crooked teeth, especially his canines. natural hair black-ish but he bleaches it light blond. has the beginnings of martial artist punching callouses in his knuckles
FC/Energy: holy shit the characters i feel have Andrew Energy are all over the place. pedro pascal. babe ruth (yes fr). oddjob (harold sakata) from goldfinger. the jinn (mousa kraish) from american gods. gaear grimsrud (peter stormare) from fargo. takeshi kovacs (joel kinnaman) from altered carbon. and i wanna be clear, it's these characters specifically, and generally NOT the actors outside of that specific role. except pedro â€ïž
4. Matt
ethnicity: cuban
appearance: matt has more of an Energy than specific features to me rn. that energy is Warm. he has that Warm bro jock dude energy. kind of a marvel hero build, hunky and muscular. very rectangular face. has this haircut:
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/9f06f4ade556bbaa551872d1d7958230/2b90ca04cfc477bd-fb/s500x750/7aa3e4ac51c27b805f38ad4dc31f9e1f5d4c79ca.jpg)
5. Aaron
i get to cut myself some slack and not go AS in depth about aaron because he and andrew are identical twins
ethnicity: kayin/karen from myanmar
appearance: similar build to andrew, less confident and casual posture and body language. less apathetically murderous and more emotive expressions. better teeth bc his mom took him to the dentist. yes also bleaches his hair
celebrities: probably a lot like the difference between the characters and the actors. andrew is the characters and aaron is how the actors actually look. idk ive never looked at someone and thought 'hey! looks like aaron!'
6. Seth
ethnicity: have been going with half-vietnamese. considering looking into various south asian possibilities like pakistani
appearance: string bean build. that's all i have to offer
7. Allison
ethnicity: allison's very up in the air for me. she and seth are the two foxes i feel fine with being white, but im committing to having no white foxes sooo. i would say i generally see her as either half-middle eastern or chinese
appearance: plus sized and hourglass shaped. heart shaped face. taller, like 5'8 or 5'9. she has a pretty fraught history with her appearance and her parents payed for/pressured her into getting a nose job to have a 'prettier' nose. she also bleaches her hair blonde. she gets it done at a salon tho the twinyards do it in their bathroom
FC/Energy: elle king and nadia aboulhosn are my main inspos for her, esp body type but nadia esp in Vibes
8. Nicky
ethnicity: multi-ethnic. his mother is southern mexican Indigenous, possibly oaxacan. his father is mixed white/kayin
appearance: definitely takes after his mother while his father is white passing. dark brown skin, warm undertones. slightly stocky build. tall ovular head and thin aquiline nose. he's kind of just,, the opposite of the twins ig, so like their facial features look very different, which is a big part of why people don't make the connection between him and the twins alongside the difference in their skin tones, heights, and builds. nicky's build and features are very vertically-oriented, with a tall head, narrow-set eyes, thin nose with a high bridge, etc. the twins are horizontally-orienged, with broad, flat faces, wide-set eyes, wide noses with a low bridge, etc.
FC/Energy: yalitza aparicio, not a guy but one of the few Mexican Indigenous stars in the film industry and i really like her features for nicky. she's oaxacan
9. Renee
ethnicity: Black. african american
appearance: plus sized, circular/apple body shape. round face. dark skin. microlocs to a bit past her chin, bleached white and dyed at the ends. she and allison go to the salon together. femme but plain style, a lot of blouses and long skirts, practical shoes. knuckle callouses. about 5'6
FC/Energy: dominique fishback. tracie thoms, esp in RENT. gabourey sidibe. nicole byer, but not in Energy. brandy, for some reason, probably bc i think she has very serene Energy and is a little bit otherworldly. like if brandy played arwen or galadriel from lotr it would make perfect sense to me, and that's the Renee Energyâąïž
10. Neil
ethnicity: mixed. Black/Jewish on both sides. his father is polish ashkenazi and afro-brazilian. his mother is Black British and algerian jewish
appearance: very... sharp. like sharp all over. does that make sense? sharp features, sharp face shape, sharp angles to his body. he's got what i vaguely think of as a 'basketball build' not meaning tall but meaning very rangy and angular and lean. all limbs. seth has a similar build. lighter brown skin. he has waardenburg syndrome which is actually where he gets he gets his eye color, and his eyes are very large and widely spaced as well. freckles freckles freckles. freckles everywhere. 4a hair but at least during canon it's not very healthy and thus the curls aren't well-defined. he grows it out long enough to tie back and starts taking better care of it in post-canon. wonky, slightly crooked teeth, with a gap between the fronts
FC/Energy: now neil i actually have a ton for. mostly models which im a lil ashamed of bc i do try to draw more from athletes. alton mason is a main body type ref. mugsy bogues is good to see what i mean about the basketball build without the height. here're the boys: cykeem white, luka sabbat, désiré mia, Leo Hoyte-Egan, dylan hasselbaink, this beautiful stock photo model i've never been able to track down

Im from Brazil as well and the existence of Cap America ALWAYS baffled me since you know, this mf is representing the US and not the Americas. He represent the "police of world" aka os Estragos Unidos @ariel-seagull-wings (Ă© como eu chamo os The Us) and and is natural for Brazilian community to not like him or have him in the best light (dude has a the US's flag as costume. Its strange for me, and hm even more when I, a Brazilian, can't help to associate nacionalismo to a step closer to fascism ....I see many patriots disrespect their own country in the vile sense "we are protecting our country" and you read this sentence right)
The X-Men fandom, to me, are a bit complex even if they don't admit it. Some say "viva la minorites" referring to white mutants that you could say "they are queer coded or have some mental illness" fair, but those fans are the one vocal about not liking brown characters.
I do remember the whole X-Men vs Avengers ...and it was peak in the endgame (deep down, I thought those fans were jealous the avengers got a franchise and the X-Men) like there an artist who makes art where some white characters of the X-Men are brown (which ok) but a piece of art that calls my attention to this day... Is an art where ...Kitty Pryde was talking down to the Avengers who can't organize to defeat Thanos but the X-Men can....but in the comics many heroes get together to defeat Thanos.
I don't like the whole extermination plotlines for the X-Men. Its tiring. Look, I'm not saying the X-Men can overcome racism and everyone loves mutants...but extermination is just something lazy to me now. We can't see different stories about mutants bc they are always dying or trying not to die.
To be clear, it's not that I think there shouldn't have the sentinels or hate groups anti mutant, hell, I like them as villains and they can work. A bunch of white people who hates mutants. A bunch of white people who enlisted poc people who aren't mutant to be anti mutant ...there many to add here, many commentaries.
Nope. Extermination
Who is liking the new era of marvel? Kudos to you. As a Brazilian ...marvel broke my heart a long time ago.
Hey Ariel.
As an X-Men fan, I wanted to know.
Why do so many X-Men fans and even writers have, let's be a real, a massive superiority complex?
As I'm sure you know by now, for about a decade, the X-Men comics have had a bad track record when it came to writing characters outside of their bubble of the Marvel Universe.
Being that they were painfully written out of character and in rather non-flattering lights.
ESPECIALLY Captain America.
Usually portraying them as being against mutants (when they've been shown before not to be).
And the worst part about all this is that they try to say that the X-Men are the only REAL heroes in the Marvel Universe and that the other heroes ain't shit!
The ONLY one who doesn't get this is Spider-Man.
But as we all know by now, Spidey gets written with more respect in literally every other title than his own.
It's pretty clearly done to make the X-Men look good, but ironically enough, it doesn't.
If anything, it makes them look like a bunch of narcissistic, self-serving assholes who love to make their problems everyone else's and shame people for their issues even when they have nothing to do with it.
And I find that incredibly disingenuous.
Like, these motherfuckers have saved the entire world multiple times and tend suddenly, they're being shamed and told that they're not real heroes?!
Blow me.
I think the most egregious is in the case of the Fantastic Four.
Like, among all the heroes of Marvel, they're arguably the most respected.
Like, these guys literally save all reality on a weekly basis.
But then you'll have Cyclops causally shaming them and even threatening to take their son against their (and maybe even his) will.
But I guess that's to be expect since most other comic fandoms don't respect the Fantastic Four (largely thanks to their horrible track record with movies).
I'm glad we're FINALLY moving past this era since in the recent comics, we've seen Cyclops and Captain Marvel are committed to having their respective teams being allies who have each other's back.
But still, why did so many fans and writers just love to trash the other heroes?
Side Note: You remember those pieces of fan art that had the X-Men dogging on The Avengers? Like that one with Cyclops having a class that basically taught that The Avengers are losers and had pictures of several members up on a board with the word "Bitch" written over them. Yeah, I'm so glad that phase finally died out.
Eh ... it's a bit more complicated then "superiority complex", and I will need to give you a brief history and geography lesson along with writing office analysis for context...
So I'm brazilian, and my country has a very complicated love and hate relationship with US American Pop Culture since it started being exported to us during the Cold War (And by complicated I mean that intelectual circles even were split about the Electric Guitar being used in our music, with some youths embracing it in the 1960s while other youths went to the streets to protest against it as a Imperialist Symbol). This complicated relationship affects as well the perception of superheroes, arguably the quintessential American Genre of comic books: some people go to the Golden and Silver Ages and see the characters as simbols of progressive figures of cultural exchange instead of domination, while others who lived enough to see the conservartive forces of Capital dominate the industry of superhero comics and films, can't separate the influence that military powers exerced in the narrative, specially post 9/11.
Without mentioning that even color of clothes can be triggering: so you see the clothes of Captain America in the Red and White And Blue spangles, if you are in the US, you are more likely to see first the hero who punched Hitler in the face as stand against fascist opression, but if you are Latin American like us, you see the modern Uncle Sam, the figure that simbolizes American Invasion. With the MCU encarnations being now the primary way that people know the Avengers, with Military Influence over blockbusters being secret to nobody, is inevitable that they become defenders to the status quo and revolutionaries who question American Intervention become villanized, so while the figures might not be literal cops to an american audience, to us they are simbolically the World Cops.
The X Men adaptations become more engaging for us because they work outside the American Goverment: they live in their own house their leader purchased, most members are born in other countries, they have to constantly fight not to be exterminated by the authorities of the american goverment, ocasionally try to trust said authorities only to be betrayed again and again, deal with issues of assimilation vs embracing their difference and creating their own culture and society, changing within the system vs changing the whole system, pacificism vs guerrilla, which are themes very rooted in the history of Latin America, so is expected they will be embraced by us as symbols of rebellion
Fandom action and reaction also hasto be considered: in one country it may appear that a fan of Avengers might be the comics "underdog" in the sense of not selling much the way the X books sold, while in other country it was considered acceptable to be an Avengers fan because they were considered "the masculine team" while the X Men fans, identifying with the queer coding and social commentary of the mutant metaphor, would be target of homophobia from people in the Avengers fandom, and in the proccess while the homophobia was not the fault of their characters and writers per se, it still left a trauma that tarnished them in the eye of some bullied X-Men fans.
As from a writing office standpoint, there is also the aspect of the Shared Universe, that has been a Double-Edged Sword for Marvel when it comes to their worldbuing: the way the Shared Universe was conceived in the 60s was mainly a publicit stunt, a way to make readers buy other titles, not necessarily a slowly well planed project. There is no way every reader will have time or engagement to collect and read every other title besides the main series they follow of their favorite character or team, AND the writing offices were still as much separated from each other as DC Offices were.
When the company expects each series to be independent from one another, yet still hold to the concept of Shared Universe as a selling tool, there will be, and has been, problems: writers each are put in the bubble of their own series rather than be constantly updating on reading other titles and collaborating with one another to make the Universe feel coherent and cohese, so characters will also be put in their bubbles, and readers will ask "Why aren't the heroes and teams helping one another and discussing this issue that concerns everyone together when they all live in the same world and mostly in the same cities (New York and San Francisco)?"
So one may say that X-Men writers don't know how to write the Avengers... but people forget the reverse can also be true, with Avengers and solo hero writers having trouble writing X-Men books and characters.
There is no understanding between writers of each others characters and no team work behind the scenes, then how can you expect that readers will get invested in aquiring different titles/team books instead of becoming tribalist for one particular hero or team? How can they really share the Same Universe?
Civil War might not have been the event it was if Avengers and X-Men characters were put in the same book to discuss the situation, because mutants have the experience with the violence of Registration Acts and would talk Tony Stark out of supporting, which would make impossible the Team Iron Man x Team Captain America fight that the company wanted to sell.
The Fantastic Four might save the planet Earth from Cosmic Beings like Galactus, but the Sentinels would still come for the son of Reed and Sue, Franklin, so is understandable that mutants will ask the question of "What use is saving the Planet if those who are born on Earth like us still will try to kill us for existing?". That Reed tried experiments to supress Franklin's X gene (before the retcon) while saying condescendingly "You are a child, you don't what you want" reminding people of cisstraight parents in denial of their children being queer didn't help.
One Incredible Hulk comic had Bruce Banner say to an alternate older Scott Summers that "Mutant Fear was never prejudice, just a correct fear that people born with superpowers would run out of control and harm humans, just like people feared the Hulk would do and did".
Which if you only read Hulk, might sound true ...
But if you follow the X-Men for decades, you will bring this argument into question because there were mutants that never didn't harm anyone and were experimented upon, enslaved and were targets of genocide, God Love Man Kills, the graphic novel that extablished the danger faced by mutants along with the Days of Future Past storyline, even showing us the Reverend Stryker killing his mutant newborn son just because "he looked different" and soon killing his wife as well for giving birth to a mutant child, which is a context a casual reader has no obligation to have, but a professional writer working at MARVEL should have, then obviously fans will get frustrated, specially when a lot of X-Men fans are from marginalized comunities and see in this speech by Bruce Banner the same speech some people give to them when they bring their own opression:
"You are exagerating, you see prejudice where there is none, this is just victimization!"
And of course, there is the Elephant in the Room called House of M: with Joe Quesada erroneously thinking that minority meant "small quantity of people" and not the actual meaning of "sociopolitically underrepresented and opressed population that often is the majority in quantity", the editorial mandate to reduce mutant characters trough a Decimation happened at Marvel, but instead of choosing an X-book adjacent character to be responsible for said Decimation, an Avengers character was choosen, and Wanda Maximoff suffered with a poorly written mental breakdown to be used as an easy Mcguffin to put mutantkind in the brink of extinction.
It probably also didn't help that since there was the whole "Movie rights battle where Fox held the movie rights to the X Men characters" Marvel itself was spitefully trying to reduce the proeminence of the X Men in comics to push other characters like the Inhumans... who are a royal family with a history of practicing slavery and eugenics.
This caused an important concern for fans: if a company already tries to erase and silence the METAPHORICAL marginalized characters even though they have been their best selling series since the 80s, what chance does NON METAPHORICAL marginalized characters have?
Basically: different writing teams not understanding each other's characters is a simpton of an editorial problem in the comics industry, and fans reacting with mistrust over other teams and fandoms like the Avengers and Fantastic Four is a coping and defense response.

some other things since my nose is out of joint already
the most frustrating thing is not when people call me âpaletteâ or some weird pronunciation, but when iâve told them my name theyâve heard MY pronunciation and yet the next time they say it they make a point of using the italian pronunciation. like no. thatâs not how my family says it, not since great grandpaâs day. please stop, it annoys the fuck out of me. this is probably perfectly normal for most other people, but it reminds me of my mother who was so keen to pretend to be italian that she used my dadâs last name this way AND kept it after she left us instead of reverting to her maiden name. i hate it when people try to force me into a cultural box that my family definitely doesnt fully claim anymore. (unless obviously they already have that italian or spanish accent and thats just how they say the name)
in another note my friend came by to help me with my car tire, very very generously and kindly taking time out of his insanely busy schedule. and he managed to get it down to paulâs with me, and my friend being a car guy he kind of hovered around the mechanics a bit as they put the tire in a pool to find the hole. anyway i was standing off to the side watching and knowing i was perfectly useless in this endeavor so should get out of the way. and this white man sitting under the umbrella waiting for his own car to be done asked me in a very dismissive tone âis that your mechanic?â and gestured to my friend. and it took me a minute bc i was confused by the question like - no of course not im here at pauls bc paul is my mechanic???. and then i realized that bc my friend has a heavy accent and bc he is a little bit more brown this asshole just ASSUMED things. i just snubbed the white dude with âno, heâs my friendâ and walked over to wait beside the tire pool instead. and then when my friend was asked his name, he gave an americanized version of it instead of his actual armenian name.

shadow and bone s1 thoughtsies
gonna put this under the cut bc i donât wanna annoy anyone <3 also bear in mind i only read the six of crows duology so any grisha trilogy opinions are biased <3
overall rating of the show: 7/10. it was really fun and i had :0 moments constantly
pros, aka things i liked:
- alina and mal. as far as im told theyâre very annoying and without chemistry in the books so i applaud them for making them more interesting and nuanced and i rooted for them the whole time
- the aging up. tbh if they had tried to make this a ya series i would have started to beat some people up because alina and the darklingâs realtionship just gets really fucking awful if sheâs a 17 year old kid so im glad theyâre all in their 20s now. especially for the crows bc there is really no reason they had to be teens in the books even, they all act like theyre 24 already.
- most of the cast. they were really good. jessie mei lin and archie renaux were surprisingly fun. ben barnes as the darkling was such a good choice because he is literally older than the rest of the cast and that made him even creepier. i dont know much about the shadow and bone characters but bregha seemed great to me too.
- the story from the shadow and bone aspect. it was really well paced, i liked those flashbacks and the way alina started to get more and more submersed into the little palace world, how she started to forget who she was little by little.
- malina. the ONE LINERS THEY THREW AT EACH OTHER. WOW. love.
- the worldbuilding. the magic and the locations felt so alive and refreshing after swallowing got for like 5 years. effervescent.
- VERY good ending, i liked the high stakes, i was gripping my seat.
cons, aka things i didnât quite like:
- the fucking. six of crows storyline. what was the reason!! what was the reason!! asides from them trying to ponder to the soc fans, there was really no motivation for them to be there. if you took all of their scenes away the show wouldnât change?? we can have a miniseries spinoff guys we dont need the weird combo. i would have allowed the nina matthias storyline even but why drag the rest of them here?????
- kaz. this is not my boy! this is not my boy. the actor they chose.... i donât vibe with him. who are you. also his characterization was all over the place this is not scheming face brekker this is some common white boy! also not relevant for his character technically but relevant for ME. why arent his eyes brown. i feel that was an important thing why arent his eyes brown like bitter coffee
- also this has been bothering me since the cast was announced but nina. what happened here.
- i have to mention the weird racism. like. again i havenât read the grisha trilogy, were they this anti shu in the books? like, in the soc books there is the casual microagression and small shit but this was so??? and also i dont understand why zoya was being fantasy world racist against alina because as far as i know zoya is a brown woman? so like? its very strange and clunky and im thinking it would have been better if they scraped that whole subplot
- alinaâs shu heritage. this is kinda connected with the point above. im glad they had an actress of color play alina, because im tired of white ya protagonists, but this whole âthey bully meâ subplot felt kinda lacking? like, i would have liked to see her react more about the anti shu sentiment, speak more about it, also her reaction with the instructor who was shu, or her speaking to other poc that were part of the second army like??? we could have explored that a lot more and given her depth? and also the fact that there are no other shu in this season was odd. one would think theyâd be interested in the fact that the sun summoner is half shu
- the first two episodes were a little bit Too Much because they were trying to throw all of this info at you and things were happening at the same time. which wouldnt have happened if you didnt have all of that kidnapping plot to begin with!!
- just. the amount of characters they had left the secondary characters feeling too flat. they should have focused on the shadow and bone characters and nothing else!!!!

im latina and pretty pale, so i don't know how much i get to say on this, but it really hurts when people say i don't look "latina enough". apparently i'm clearly not white (i get asked where i'm from a LOT) so some say that i'm still poc, but others say i'm white passing since i've never had to experience racism (or i'm too oblivious to notice). but i'm just tired of having people debate over how mixed ppl are supposed to look. (but it would be nice to have a main character with brown eyes)
i mean your perspective is kinda perfect, bc itâs living proof of the damage the debate of âwhatâs [insert race] enoughâ can do to mixed race people by making you think you may not have a valid place in this conversation when you definitely do. so thank you for sharing, i really appreciate it.
as for the eye thing, thatâs something i try and be aware of myself. like originally my core protagonist and her sister of my original works were white girls with blue and green eyes respectively, but now that iâve made them asian (i think indonesian but iâm not sure yet, iâm still doing research) itâs still a fantasy world but theyâre gonna have brown eyes. i gave myself one kinda âpassâ of a black character with fire powers having golden eyes, and thatâs that.
iâll never forget having a conversation with someone i was more friendly with a couple years ago, who was an overall nice decently educated person, who emphasized how much she preferred/liked green and blue eyes. and i pointed out, almost baffled, âyou do realize how much that excludes people of colour, right?â bc like there are some exceptions of poc with green or even blue eyes here and there, but to act like the romanticization of those eye colours exists independently of eurocentric beauty standards / colonization / racial stereotyping / western literature, etc. just doesnât hold water
i always liked blue eyes bc i am blue eyed, and green eyes with dark hair bc it was a nice colour contrast (which admittedly does feed more into character design) but it was a favourite character of mine six ish years ago who was an asian girl with brown eyes that really made me fall in love with brown eyes, so it really can change things
#thanks for asking#anonymous#idk what else to tag this but i'm loving this discussion so#perhaps i will scrounge up a tag somewhere for it#Anonymous#in regards to

we make up more than 19% of the usam population that is a LOT of us. yet the way we are viewed or not even seen at all in media is unrepresentative of that. just scrolling through all the different hispanic heritage collections shows that media sees the majority of us as a monolith of light skinned straight dark haired people and it affects us so heavily. i cant just go and pick something to watch that reflects me as a mixed brown hispanic living in america the way monolithic people can and immediately feel like one of those characters because of how badly media wants to simplify us
we dont all look the same yet whoever is in charge cannot fathom that maybe just maybe not all of us look like sofia vergara, jenna ortega or any of the hundred pale latino actors that are showcased in the film industry. and itâs exhausting feeling like an echoing chamber when we get sad or frustrated or pissed off when a beloved latino comic book or cartoon character that once had beautiful tan or brown skin be portrayed by a much lighter actor. im not saying our stories dont exist im saying we dont have enough of them
and its nearly just about every time and frankly more people need to be ashamed about the fact that its 2023 and we finally for once have brown latino main character rep and its in the form of some fantasy ass world. like man he did his shit and he did it well but what about the million other stories we have to tell what about a story about just us as normal regular people that isnt some sob story about trauma or racism or a tired ass stereotype its simply the fact that the TINIEST fraction of latinos (the ones that are accepted easiest by white people and the ones that white people can âsympathizeâ with) stories are told when theres so many more of us out there as well. we want to be the main character too not just comedy relief or a sidekick to our paler counterparts. i exist in the real world so why cant i see myself in its stories
also adding âen españolâ doesnt suddenly make a show hispanic either bc theres a whole ass category of that shit too
idk if its just me but looking at streaming services hispanic heritage month collections and seeing a lot of movies and shows in which a non hispanic white character is the lead like i dont want a movie to open with some blonde white girl having a nightmare (when typically the first person you encounter in film is the center of the story) i want the movie to open with a latino character like me. i dont want to be a side character in my own life why should i have to watch me be a side character when âsupposedlyâ the celebration of my people is the center of hispanic fucking heritage month
#it sucks that i cant just be like oh damn theres so many options for me to choose from how could i ever decide what im going to watch today#colorism is fucking crazy
