auouaoagh having the itch to do vocal arrangement stuff again, tho since i can't sing for shit also voice dysphoria i've tried a few solutions over the years. none of 'em really stuck. forever ago i uhhh """acquired""" a copy of IA for some version of Vocaloid (3 or 4?), she was neat but she also sounded kinda flat. I tried UTAU but I literally could not get a single sound out of that program, even with the default voicebank. Never figured it out despite efforts, best guess is that it didn't like my audio interface drivers. Closest thing that somewhat stuck is Neutrino, technically a neural network sort of processing (but the banks are specifically made for it, without stealing shit ffs) with a bank named Seven:

Seven sounds pretty cool, but like. Rolling Girl in its default key here is a bit high for her range. Her pitch tends to be pretty shaky, and requires exhaustive tuning and tweaking after export to wrangle her in. I'm fine with tuning, I honestly love having that much fine control, but I wish I had more control over the initial rendering. That whole process just, kind of sucks? Set up the midi with hiragana lyrics in Cubase. Export as music XML. Open it with fucking Musescore just so I can re-add the tempo information. Re-export as uncompressed musicxml. And finally slap it in a source folder and run a .bat file via command prompt to render out the vocal to a .wav. Reimport into Cubase. Fucking exhausting lmfao. And even then, sometimes the bank just sings things in a way you really were not looking for. Rendering is a frustratingly hands-off process, and it's one of the reasons I wish I could get UTAU working on my machine. I want to find a voice bank that can really belt and growl, y'know?? I wanna be able to dial that in by hand, adhd hyperfocus style.

Anyway here have some pared down mixes. Dunno if I'd call the vocal harmonies final or anything, but I like the direction this goes in. I can't really say I'm good at it, cause I don't have much experience? But I really love arranging vocal harmonies n shit. Also u can hear my sloppy bass playing (yes that's me playing the bass and guitars lol)

”King Ruffgore” finally has his battle theme now. I called this version 1 because I might remake it. Also, I am working on Blossom’s theme right now.

The melody is based on the FETCH! theme song and one of my arrangement compositions for the FETCH! video game that, again, will never happen unless I master coding.

I hope this prototype sounds okay.

Playing around with something called Neutrino AI which is basically an AI powered version of Vocaloid lol. The audio has a female voice, male voice, then all together 😜

I thought it worked really well, given that I synced it with a random midi. If you want to try it out then here’s how I did it (to help me remember and save you some time).

Step 1: If you don’t have a song in musicxml format, download a midi.

Step 2: Download Musescore and edit the midi to be sing-able. This means only have one instrument playing, and make sure only one note plays at a time (i.e. no chords).

Edit -> Instruments -> Remove from score to remove instruments. You’ll manually have to remove notes if there’s chords.

Step 3: Export the midi as musicxml. You can do this multiple times for different instruments if you want to make an acapella or something.

Step 4: Make sure all notes (except rests) have a lyric. Currently, it has to be in Japanese.

The way I did it was directly edit the musicxml to have this within the < note > (without spaces) tags:

To add it to all notes except rests, replace all instances of < pitch > (without spaces) with:

You can also add the lyric in Musescore too if you prefer to do that.

Step 5: Put your musicxml in the “score/musicxml” folder of Neutrino. Rename it to “sample1.musicxml″ (because, for me at least, the Run script references a bunch of voice-related files needed to generate the voice as “sample1.″ If you happen to have your own version of these files, you can basically skip this step and edit the Run script to use your files instead.)

Step 6: Run the script to generate the voice. It may take a long time, especially the NSF step.

You may want to check on sample1_syn.wav while it is doing the NSF step to make sure it doesn’t sound broken and save yourself some time. It should be roughly the length of the song (or whatever length you made it).

Step 7: Check sample1_nsf.wav. If you like it, you’re done!

I noticed for the male voice, the voice kind of breaks if the notes are too high pitched. You can make the notes lower by doing this: Go to Musescore, highlight all notes, Transpose -> To Key -> Down. Listen to the song to make sure it sounds okay. If it does, export it as musicxml.

Note: By the way, the reason why I posted the XML as a screenshot instead of just text is because it breaks Tumblr. Sorry, I know it's annoying.

Whats your method for transcribing music from BotW? And, while I'm at it, whats your method for composing?

oh?? Oh??? OH??? Questions about music? Questions about composing for Kip?? You know not what waters you have just unleashed. 

Ok so for the first question, I just transcribe based on the internet, and just by listening to the soundtrack by ear. I kinda just stitch together the melody based on sheet music on musescore, and covers on youtube, and I just kinda see how those versions are composed and then based on that I craft how I want the music to sound on my own version. 

I have this decade old Yamaha DGX640 keyboard that only has five song slots so the most I can(know how to) do is record one two-handed harmony and use my phone to record me playing the melody on top of that. But it’s kinda tedious and the botw songs are usually easy enough to play with just two hands anyhow so I really only use that method when I wanna be fancy. I have a habit of just using left to play arpeggios and by then the music usually sounds full enough. (cough cough that Rito Village one cough cough) So yeah it’s basically a method of studying the basic material online and then making up and crafting whatever stuff sounds nice around it

As for the original comps, well they’re all usually based on some botw concept (as I’m guessing most of the ones you’ve all seen are just the oc themes lol) so I do one of two methods. The first method is I take the key signature of a botw melody that is related to the thing I’m composing for, then I fuck around on a keyboard until I have a melody I think sounds cool. USUALLY I make it on a typical build to coda/climax thing, but the example I’m using is an exception (cause it was my first draft and all I did was repeat the first half with additional harmony)

Ok so I take the key signature, I craft my original part of the music, and then based on the “story” I want to tell, I fuse in a bit of the botw bits within “lows” of the song. So in Zimiri’s Theme for example, I had this certain segment of Kass’ Theme that I liked, so I started based on that key signature. Then I just completely forget about botw while I compose the parts for my character. So Zimiri is a Sheikah poet for the royal family, and also a bard, so I made his theme in 3 to give it that waltz feel. The Eflat key has that...idk the technical term, but it just has that vibe of kindness and serenity and wisdom which is what I’m going for in his character. Now, Zimiri also has a crush on Zelda, but he knows that’s unrequited and he’s mostly ok with that, but that doesn’t stop him from at least dreaming of some unreality where he could dance with her under the stars (uh fic spoilers I guesss). Hence, his main melody, (0:10) the half note Eflat to D to Bflat, is of the same beat pattern of Zelda’s lullaby. And then, uh character arc spoilers! The story I’ve constructed for Zimiri is basically this idea that he comes to understand this battle between what he wants and what he knows he needs to do. He has a harmless crush on Zelda, but he knows he needs to respect her and do what he can as her friend during these rough times. [I mention Zelda a lot but I swear that’s only like 7% of his character] He recognizes that Adello and Revali and a bit of Link, they all want to [REDACTED REDACTED REDACTED] but he tries to push them to be more [REDACTED REDACTED REDACTED], even if that isn’t always successful. He’s mostly a static character, that recognizes what other people want, but wants to help them be better through what they need, which is an ironic trait since it’s a bit contradictory to his whimsical and almost naive cinnamon bun personality as a bard. But that’s like his main thing, you see like, he wants nothing more than to be the hero of the story and to wield a sword and save everyone, and while its OK to dream that, he still is content and fills his role as support, as the “harmony,” the background to the melody if you will. So THAT is why, the song is crafted where it’s grounded into his main melody, those three notes, the halfnote Eflat, to D to Bflat, and while the song ascends and seems to dance in the stars and the harmony (wink wink parallels) rises and becomes more prominent over the course of the song, it ultimately always Always comes back down to those three main notes. It’s like a dream that will eventually fade back into reality. The whole song is an ascension to those higher, magical notes in the “stars,” that comes back down to the essentials of Zimiri, those three main notes, that as said before, are similar to Zelda’s Lullaby, but is purposefully, a full descension in the scale, it doesn’t rise. 

Ok and then Finally, finally finally finally, we come back to that botw aspect. Like all of that, is just the original stuff and the thought that goes into where the notes go and how the stuff moves and plays out, it’s basically like planning a fic outline or something. But anyhow, this idea that I’ve been crafting for Zimiri’s theme, this concept that he understands that even though he might not be the one to save the world or see the fantastical end to the story, this whole ascension and descending thing, with the higher parts being a the stars that aren’t yet in your reach or the dreams that are not yet reality and all that sap? Right so now that’s when we can put a bit of Kass’ Theme into those higher parts. 0:33 and 1:07 are just bits of Kass’ Theme slowed down, specifically, the parts in Kass’ Final Song the time and sacrifice aspects of the legend. “Now resurrected after 10,000 years//Her appointed knight//Gives his life//Shields her figure and pays the price.” You could probably hear the “10,000 year” part most prominently. So one, the botw aspect serves to the themes that I’m going for in this character, and two, it serves as that connection between Zimiri and his eventually successor, a successor who would live out to see a dream that he couldn’t wooAAAoooh parallels. And even still, the segment that I’ve drawn out of Kass’ Theme still descends (seamlessly I might add, if to toot the horn a bit) into Zimiri’s core 3 note theme. So while I’ve written the piece to pick up at those whimsical parts, and to foreshadow and encompass the journey I have planned for this character, I’ve ultimately grounded the music itself to a specific scene that I have written, (and not yet posted I need to finish some other things) where Zimiri playing music to himself under the stars, the melody on his lute serving only to keep the sky company. 

OH RIGHT and I said I had a second method for composing stuff didn’t I ahaha...this post it already way too long and full of uneditted rambling so maybe I’ll gush about that some other time :p

Dev update! 9.30.2020

Well... I have to come clean now. The rest of the game is still very much in its bare bones. Everything is a mouse drawing, to focus on progression and concept. No animations, so everything is just sliding around. And most rooms are completely silent, which is haunting to playtest in LOL. 

But I still want to update you guys. Not pull a YandereDev. Some of you have donated to help my process, and many of you who have enjoyed the demo have expressed it to me, which means the world to me. This is my first real project that I put my heart and soul into, and because you all have enjoyed it thus far you shouldn’t be disappointed to not hear anything from me for ages. Even if that means most updates for now will look like childish sketches.

That being said, let’s talk about the update. I want to make the rest of the game much more interactive than the demo, which is why I’m still in this phase for the graphics, because holy cow are there a lot more areas alone than the demo, which calls for a LOT of interactions. A lot of you maybe didn’t notice the Talk function in the demo, which WHOOPS I should have made that more evident. The final game definitely will. But you can talk to you party members and they’ ll give advice or menial comments depending on how far you’ve come in the game. There are nearly 40 different interactions with Cai in the demo alone, so you can imagine how much more I have to write for that.

Great news for the OST as well! Unfortunately the demo could only have 2 original songs due to all the technical difficulties my brother and I have been having, but now we have a solid computer and use Sibeluis for our program instead of MuseScore. I’ll definitely make an OST post once we have a coupl’a bangers all finalized and good to go. So look forward to that!

I use Logic Pro X now and I love it, though it is very complex. Started with Musescore though!

I’ll give two pieces of advice that are common and both things that I personally have worked on in my music:

I think a rookie mistake people (me included) make is with chords. Chords are really really important. If you’re trying to make a rock song but you’re missing the 5th of the chord, you’re not gonna make a rock song. If you’re tryna make a jazz song, but your chords are all 1, 3, 5 majors, then you’re not gonna end up with a jazz song.

Chords really make or break songs, and they’re something a lot of people don’t really understand. Whatever genre you’re making music in, I highly recommend looking for video tutorials of example chords in that genre. It’s something I still do regularly, because as you progress through genres the chords get more and more complex and situational, and also chords are hard lol.

Here’s an example of something I made with good chords, and here’s an example of something I made with bad chords.

The other piece of advice I have is that less is more. A common thing people starting out do is they try to fill every instrument with something. They’ll have like 3 basses doing different things, a melody, and like 2 counter melodies, one of them probably in the same octave as the melody, everything’s panned center, and it’s just a goddamn mess of sounds. 

So look at your instruments, and divide it up into low, mids, highs. Who’s doing what in each range of sound? Do you have a melody and a counter melody both playing in the same octave? If that’s the case, delete one of them. Is your counter melody as complex as the melody? Delete it. Do you have instruments that were just given parts just cuz with no real thought involved as to why? Delete it.

You don’t NEED so much happening at once. I often will double parts on different instruments, but I make sure that they serve a purpose. 

Here’s an example of something I made with good sound placement, and here’s an example of something I made with bad sound placement.

So those are my top 2 pieces of advice; pay attention to your chords, and don’t over-saturate your songs with random instruments or melodies that don’t add to the overall sound.

Now I’m into this so I’ll give some random tips down below:

Doubling octaves in the bass is 👌

If you’re making an electronic synth bass, and need to beef it up, harmonics are a great lifehack

Pan your instruments. If everything’s in the center of the speaker, it’s going to sound muddled. Pan stuff around to the left and right, with bass and melody staying in the center. Listen to songs with headphones to learn this one.

Dissonant chords (in many but not all contexts) are great.

Double up instruments, panning them hard left and right, and offsetting one just a tinyyyy bit from the beat (if you’re on a DAW) is an awesome way to beef up sounds.

Music is like painting. Make the foreground stuff prominent, but make sure to send the less important sounds to the background. Not everything needs to be so obvious. Use the mixer to help level your sounds to achieve this.

If you’re on a DAW, white noise is amazing.

If you’re struggling to find a melody or counter melody, just play what you have and start singing or humming over it.

Don’t be intimidated by percussion. I’m working on this rn too, but have fun with it! Percussion can be a great way to add color.

This is my first FetcherTale track (that has developed over the course of 2020-2021 as my MuseScore operating skills have improved. Also, yes. I made this in MuseScore 3 of all programs). 

YAY! 

This track is called “Glovejumble,” the FetcherTale equivalent of the song “Bonetrousle.” The song motif is an arrangement of an arrangement of a song that was sung/played in the first episode of Season 5 of FETCH! with Ruff Ruffman (The episode where Ruff picks his FETCHers). I think it was Shreya’s song.....? (It was based on her song I believe. I'm just hesitant to answer lol)

(If you have headphones, I recommend listening to it with them to experience better sound quality. ^_^)
