a very brief overview of chimpanzee facial expressions ^__^

(cut for Long and because i know some people find chimpanzee “fear smile” scary, so i dont want to jumpscare people lmao. fair warning, i move on quickly but there is a very scared chimpanzee under the cut. keep in mind that this expression is off-putting for a reason; the animal is communicating distress.)

(i am NOT an expert, and i have only been researching this topic for a limited time. this is just my understanding from what i have read from people who actually know what theyre talking about, lol. take this all with a grain of salt)

its a common misconception that chimpanzees only “smile” when they are angry, and while this is partially true, i would like to explain a bit what this expression means, and how its different from a chimps “happy smile”. i will also be touching on how you can tell the differences in an actual context.

lets start with a very obvious example. below is a well known stock photo of a chimpanzee “smiling”, or expressing whats actually referred to as a ‘fear grimace’:

clearly, this chimpanzee is extremely frightened and upset. i believe this chimp is juvenile as well, so the emotion is especially intense, in such a way that i think itd be fairly obvious to most people that this chimp is not happy. (he is likely being exposed to intentionally disturbing stimuli behind the camera in order to capture this expression)

basically, this face is more of a warning than anything; like a cat growling or puffing up its fur to communicate that it is frightened or dislikes what you are doing. this face is used by chimps to communicate discontent to each other, and doesnt necessarily lead to any kind of aggressive action; basically, this chimp is saying “stop! i dont like that!” or, in another situation, it might be used by chimps to communicate that they are on edge and somewhat wary of a situation, all in all it is not an inherent sign of aggression.

this image in particular is kind of hard for me to look at, so ill move on. for reference, below is a photo of what an adult chimpanzee looks like in a similar situation

i think that this is slightly more difficult to understand the emotion on a first glance, mostly because this looks a lot like a human smile. our brains automatically process this expression as joy. clearly it is not, though, so how can we, as humans, easily tell this apart from a chimp that is happy?

well, the easiest, most affirmative sign to look out for is actually the presence of the top row of teeth. below is a chimp making a friendly smile; hes ready to play!

notice how his top teeth are completely hidden by his upper lip! this is essential in the way chimps communicate to each other that they are friendly and not looking for a fight, and it is the expression you will see most often when observing chimpanzee interactions. people who work with chimps are often trained to make this expression instead of our normal full-teeth smiles, as to not frighten them.

here are some more examples! two young children playing together, a happy adult, and two female friends interacting cordially. do you see how their top teeth are almost completely hidden? this is key to understanding that they are comfortable!

chimps are extremely social, so it is incredibly important that we understand their social conventions and language when interacting with them. our many, many similarities cant blind us to the differences in how we present and express ourselves, and we must respect their space and unique societies, not treating them as if they were human (putting clothes on them, socializing them only with humans, etc.), because they are not, and treating them as though they are can be extremely harmful to both parties.

okay, so weve talked about a fear grimace and a cordial smile, but what do they look like when theyre actually happy? i think this is an expression that most people would be familiar with:

you can almost hear the noise they are making from these images… the soft breathing and cooing they make when pleased, interested, or comfortable. its very recognizable, and is a wonderful noise to hear.
