i apologise for the long absence as i've started my internship not too long ago and it's been taking a toll on me. 😮‍💨 my prof had set me up with this company and i guess i got the short end of the stick because the travelling time it takes from me to go to and fro from home to work is close to 4 hours: around 2 hours per trip. well, it was mostly my fault for not finding a suitable company to intern by the allocated time, but have mercy on my poor soul 🥲

anyways, enough about me. how have you been? anything interesting or exciting events happening that you've been waiting for? perhaps an event has passed that you're dying to share with someone? let me know!ヽ(＾Д＾)ﾉ

omg you're here! of course i remember you. i'm glad you're back! 2 hrs going and 2hrs back?? do you do that everyday?? here i am complaining about a 1hr and a half trip, back and forth, to my lecture. when does your internship ends? i hope you get a deserving credit for all the effort you put into your work.

you study engineering? chemistry? what was it again? i only remember it being a difficult major, maybe it includes math or smth bc i'm terrible at it lol

about me...well, i'm not sure if you know this but i graduated from uni! i'm taking lectures for a national exam, that's in line with my goals to continue my studies to grad school. so, i'm currently busy with that. also, i started taking japanese language classes early this year! it's fun but challenging, but mostly fun. i love learning languages (i was this 🤏🏼 close to pursuing linguistics as a major back when i was applying for uni). that's all ig, all is well. 😊

OH and i play genshin and am obsessed with it. do you play any games?

they’re all watching a movie adaptation of one of gentaro’s books!!!! it was not by choice tho lmao gentaro, in true leader/2gumi twin souls fashion, concocted a web of lies to bring everyone together for it LOL

juto and hifumi went to nab their seats while rosho jyushi and jiro chose the snacks!!!! jyushi and jiro started to get into an argument over which is the best popcorn flavour, jiro’s on team caramel and jyushi’s on team butter lmao

when the movie got started, they let gentaro on stage to give a message as the author of the book and when he took stage, jiro and hifumi immediately began loudly cheering for him lmao 🥹🥹🥹 rosho loudly told him they were being too loud so they needed to shut up, juto told him that he was being too loud too so he should shut up and jyushi tearfully said that everyone was too loud pls be quiet LOL

UNIT, self-preservation, and the Doctor

so UNIT is sus, right, we know this, they're getting too powerful for their own good and I feel like everyone is expecting them to get infiltrated or corrupted or something for a season finale plot twist in the near future. but lately I've been thinking about the weird and impossible position they're in.

so! you're in charge of the planet's main (only? idk what torchwood is up to these days) line of defense against alien attack, and your species has been adopted by a sort of alien trickster god.

this eccentric, erratic alien with apparently godlike power has decided to attach themself to you. The Doctor is benevolent and willing to sacrifice almost anything up to and including their own life for the good of the human race, but they're also unpredictable, unreliable, egotistical. you know what happened the last time a human authority crossed a moral line they decided was unforgivable:

so your organization is technically independent, but there are certain decisions you can't make, otherwise the Doctor might decide the weeds need trimming. you're in theory the highest military authority when it comes to alien conflicts, but if you decide to shoot those guys attacking you with your giant ray gun, there's every chance this guy could crawl out of the woodwork to burn your house down. you can't take any action without also taking the Doctor into consideration.

so what do you do?

maybe when they show up, you take them under your power. they're humanity's strongest asset and you need to make sure you have at least some measure of control over their actions.

but now that you've got them, how do you keep them from wandering off on a whim? how do you keep them inclined to work with you?

you formally grant them the power that is de facto already theirs. you rely on them, blatantly and obviously, making it clear that you need their help and their presence to have any hope of survival. you flatter their ego and encourage their attachment to you.

but in the end, it's been proven that nothing will keep the Doctor anywhere they don't want to be, and nothing will stay their hand when they've decided something needs to be destroyed for the greater good. so how do you make sure your organization stays on the safe side of that line? how do you sway the Doctor's judgment?

you employ their weak spot.

the people the your alien protector trusts, loves, has chosen, you bring them into the fold, and so you bring yourself into their fold. the Doctor can't attack you without attacking them, and their trust will rub off on you and your organization. you find what they value most in the world and keep it close.

so you end up with this defense organization which is semi-independent, but also built up totally around this one individual.

the Doctor is the most passionate defender you could hope for, but they also cut off your own ability to defend yourself. a good amount of your defense protocols center around hoping this guy happens to turn up. you HAVE to rely on their support, and you also have to fawn, flatter, and appease them if you want your organization to go on existing. if you want to get away with anything they might seriously disapprove of, your only option is to dazzle and flatter them, collect their friends, and hope they won't look close enough to find your secrets.

I'm not saying Kate Lethbridge-Stewart is some kind of Machiavelli spending all her time finding ways to manipulate the Doctor. but I am saying that UNIT probably has a protocol somewhere saying that in times of absolute crisis, if the Doctor shows up, the first thing you should do is dangle candy in front of their face by means of having someone they like give them a great big hug.

do not read this if you don't want to hear annoying incel internet drama about angela it's not worth your time to get mad about

but i'm mad about it. i am mad about the "backlash" towards the angela redesign in the silent hill 2 remake and it being attributed to "going woke" or whatever. people won't admit that they don't like it because she doesn't look a certain standard of conventional attractiveness but that's literally the whole reason.

edits of her model, including even the "better" ones that are less sexist, basically trim her face/jawline down and stereotypically feminize her - even if they do give her eyebags or bruising to show her internal pain. which i also have a gripe with, because people struggling with intense pain and trauma don't always look it. there are subtleties possible, yes, but we can have round, childlike faces - especially at only 19 and right after coming out of the traumatic event, rather than the aftermath of dealing with it.

i honestly got so excited when i saw angela in the new one because she looks like a real person. not saying nobody has ever looked like the original angela, but she looks like women i know in real life, and girls i knew at her age. she looks like people i love dearly but never get to see in media, even as secondary or side characters. and it fits her so well. i have so many friends who are women with her demeanor and looks like! women like this exist! and they are worth love and enjoying, fictional or not. she doesn't exist to be sexy. you can protest all you want and say it's not about that, but then what it is about?

i get she was intentionally made to look older in the original due to the trauma she sustained, but that's not wholly realistic. some of us have been beatened and battered in life but are babyfaced. you genuinely cannot, even in intentional character design, infer someone is traumatized just because "they look older than they should". there's a variety of genetics and circumstances at play beyond that.

and also she's literally based of of her voice actor's looks, like completely scanned-in mocap of her. everytime you insult her looks or make fun or her you're making fun of a real woman. but obviously people (men, anyway) who are willing to see it as such an appalling offense don't care if they're hurting an actual human being with what they have to say.

from a character design standpoint, the casting of angela is really good in my opinion. but beyond that subjectiveness, that is what actual people look like

they say ur a crackship professional what do u think of minfies (minute and wifies) they never interacted but they have such strangely similar tendencies with self sacrificing. they have a flavor of self sacrificing every other character doesnt and its rlly funny

i know way less about minute than i know about wifies, but i kind of see where you're coming from. okay yeah if we're talking about uu!minute, then yeah, they definitely have some similar traits. i do agree that they're both self sacrificial and i feel like their personalities are kind of similar too. they're both pretty rational and logical people. it's so silly to think about, but i honestly don't mind it.
