i love becoming proficient at using public transit systems i’m literally never going to see again in my life
#it’s ok though. it’s about making the journey as sexy as possible (i.e. i don’t have to drive and deal with other drivers)#i love you trains i love you trams i love you buses etc etc#📘.txt

What is life like in Melbourne? I’m looking into moving there from the UK and would love some insights and whatever else from people who live and work there 💕
Well you'll find the weather familiar that's for sure. In winter I'd say we're about the same, except our sunset at the earliest was about 5:25 this year. In summer it CAN get hot, it's gotten to 40C before but mostly it's in the low 30s or high 20s.
The central area of the city is kind of dead unless you work there. There's a few big shops, similar to Nordstrom I think??? But the cafe scene in there is slim pickings. Lots of really really cool bars these days though, and most have food and nonalc options! Some absolutely gorgeous parks dotted throughout the city, and if you can get out into the countryside it's stunning in the Yarra Valley, the great Ocean road, Bright and Beechworth, Gippsland etc. Some have trains, others have to be driven to. Be warned our public transport is about 20 years behind Europe (our fastest trains are 160kmh)(I literally work for a train manufacturer so this is legit)
It gets really cool in the suburbs, you'll find local cafes all over, some great pubs and restaurants etc. Some have really vibrant communities and markets that are great, like the south melbourne market, the prahran market, Fitzroy and Brunswick are must see Melbourne suburbs and easily accessible by tram. Be aware we don't have the same grandeur as London, but I still really like it. We have beaches too and some of them are even nice lol.
The east side tends to be more expensive but has better public transport (trans and trams), while the west is a bit cheaper but underserviced (you'd be relying on buses more). Driving in some areas can suck massively, especially the central part of the city (you'd avoid driving in central London the same way).
People say Melbourne is Australia's most European city and im inclined to agree, so if that means anything to you great! We have fantastic food and coffee, and I truly don't think it's just because I live here but the people are nicer than in syndey. That's not to say everyone will smile and wave at you but if you needed help or directions most people would stop and chat, where in Sydney everyone seems to rush around more and have a bit less time.
Something you might find very different to the UK is a culture of not seeing people as much. I think in the UK you'll frequently see people for dinner through the week and its normal (I think??) Whereas here not so much. We're mostly a weekend bunch, but I'm trying to do more weeknight easy meet ups.
@idsb is another great person to ask about living in Melbourne (and I think she needs to come back 🤧)
Sydney feels like a bigger city, but Melbourne population just overtook it. Brisbane is further north on the east coast and is locally called Brisvegas. I have never spent much time there because in summer it's humid as fuck and I can't stand that and the heat.
Adelaide is small, Hobart is gorgeous and only a short flight from Melbourne, but tiny. Perth people are loving these days but I've only been once so gonna need someone else to pitch in there! Same with Darwin :)
I would love for you to tell me more about living in the UK because IM considering moving THERE!

Everyone is a revolutionary until the trash has to be taken out.
Let me explain: most people who want the status quo AND a giant revolution with blood think the system will benefit them. However, the moment they have to do the annoying minutae of society, they suddenly refuse to engage in it.
This is because most people are under the assumption that they will benefit more in the new order, not that they will be the ones required to run it or do the dirty jobs nobody wants to. Some happily tell about having servants and the strong to rule and to kill the rich, ignoring that they may be the servants, the weak, the rich. They believe that their life will improve, not worsen.
Which is what oh so many revolutions fail at. They get the depose-replace part, but then fall into the same traps the old system had, or worse, create brand new traps and willingly charge into them.
Imagine, we go to a free buns party. 500 people can get free buns! Yum! However... there are a 1000 people. How should we solve it?
Give to the first 500? Great, and- oops, sorry, you are the 501st...
Oh, tickets. You can buy a ticket, get a bun. But it is not a free bun then... but alas. Oops, sorry, you can't buy a ticket, guy before you had more money.
Redistribute. Okay, give me two hours. And also service fee, one bun for me... got to get people to carry... my buddies in the council... oops, sorry, you JUST missed it. I mean, you look like someone who could use some less buns, you get me?
Free for all? Ok. Oops, sorry, those guys are bigger and faster than you. Sorry.
Oh, sharing! Lovely idea. Half a bun for everyone. There. It is solved, as long as we only got 500 buns for 1000 people.
Now... imagine it not being about free buns. It is about housing, plumbing, mass transit, jobs one can do, water, food, etc.
But let us imagine tomorrow we find out the Utopian Edict. It is suprisingly easy to implement and comes free! It even solves the resource problems all across the globe, and SOMEHOW none of us becomes a selfish jerk by political, national, emotional, sexual, racial or other identities we have. A true utopia, where happiness is free for everyone and nobody leaves unsatisfied.
Who will take out the trash?
Come on, you know we can recycle them, but someone still has to take out the trash. Someone has to deliver the mail. Someone has to put the buns in the oven and take them out, with the right time between the two. The books have to be printed AND written by someone for us to read. Someone has to make sure there are schools, libraries, hospitals, buses, trams, buns and so many more.
In the Utopian life, we won't just point to someone else. It ought to be either volutary - the people who like doing these - or rewarded well - so people do these and not much more.
Taking out the trash is not as glamorous as being the Hero of the Great Cause, but have you ever considered that after the Great Revolution wins, you have to build a new world, right? What world would that be?
Consider this: you are asked what should happen to the worst members in society. When you say the answer, a random roll is done to determine if you get the worst member role or not. Will your answer change?
In the Utopia version, you will be asked who should take out the trash and what we should give for them for doing such a job. "Nobody" wants to do it, but it has to be done. Surely, we find volunteers but it won't be enough...
So. In this utopia we fight for, we should consider what world we build. Not just shout for guillotines and firing squads and "we figure it out eventually"; not just "we can fix this all", and ignore the minutea like taking the trash out. Storming a palqce qnd blowing bridges up is the stupid eaasy part of a revolution, building houses and bridges and making sure there are trains and running on time is the hard part. Almost all revolutions failed on these when they started. Wwe will need logisticians, planners and people who are willing to take out the trash more than people good with bombs and guns.
Even in Utopia, you will need someone who does it. Except in Utopia, it would be a job that is not treated as trash.

Bold move to post this on a website that loves both trains (hi @amtrak-official) and famous skateboarder Tony Hawk.
A+ for misleading propaganda by including a photo that includes only cars and a bus, though. That is a great way to encourage people to forget that, besides cars, trucks, and motorcycles, this includes:
lifts/elevators and escalators (Remember, kids, up and down are also directions of travel.)
buses
trains, trams, streetcars, etc.
bicycles, tricycles, and unicycles
scooters (of all varieties)
roller skates
skateboards (You would do that? To poor Tony Hawk?)
skis (particularly cross country skis), snowboards, and snowshoes
snowmobile
zipline
sleds
cart, stroller, wagon, carriage, etc.
pack animals such as horses, mules, donkeys, camels, etc.
walking, wheelchairs, and any other form of "on foot" transit (Depending on your definition of transport, this may only include when the person is carrying items, but given that people can and do deliver items this way, I'm counting it. If nothing else, small children are transported by this method quite often.)
Depending on your definition of "ship", this may or may not include airplanes and spacecraft, but I excluded them from my list just in case.
All forms of transport that aren't ships or boats
#Also I may not understand the landlocked but I don't think we have enough rivers and canals for this to work.#I respect the propaganda hustle but that doesn't mean I won't disrupt it.#trains#public transportation#transportation#public transit#skateboarding#tony hawk#amtrak official#would you punt them#poll#poll game

Transit Talk Thursday
Transit Talk Thursday: I've been noticing recently that a lot of Transit Talk Thursday tends to be train-focused, likely a byproduct of trains being pretty cool. But transit isn't just about trains, it encompasses so many other different things. So for this week, I figured it's a good time to give a spotlight to one of said things, being the good ol' trolleybus! Yeah, that's right, this post was a clever way to totally trolleybus you all. You must now reblog this to totally trolleybus your friends. You know you want to. You are already moving to reblog this post as you read this. You will then caption this post saying "Reblog this to trolleybus your friends or you will smell like ham." Do it. I know you wanna.
*shakes head*
Sorry, where was I?
Oh, right, transit.
So what's the deal with trolleybuses anyway?
Well, in essence, they're basically buses tied to overhead wires.
Pretty simple, huh?
Pretty much.
How trolleybuses work is they use electric motors to drive the wheels, but instead of using a big battery, two trolley poles are suspended above to contact a pair of trolley wires, which supply the electricity required to move the bus. Two poles are required because to close the circuit and allow electricity to flow, there must be a way for electricity to return to the wire, so you have a positive pole, and a negative pole.
By contrast trains do not need a second point of contact with a wire to close the circuit, as the rails themselves function as the second wire. This is the same for overhead wire and third rail power. The more you know.
So what's all the buzz with trolleybuses?
A great thing with trolleybuses is how cheap they are to produce. Lacking a diesel engine or a battery, trolleybuses don't really require that much material vs their combustion engine and battery powered brethren. In addition, the lack of an engine or battery makes trolleybuses less maintenance-heavy compared to battery electric buses. Trolleybuses also have an advantage of being able to navigate traffic better than a tram, and with the introduction of hybrid trolleybuses, trolleybuses can even go off the grid when necessary. No wires needed here!
Like most transit, the trolleybus isn't a very new concept. The origins of the trolleybus can be dated as far back as 1882, when Dr. Ernst Werner Siemens demonstrated the "Elektromote" in a suburb in Berlin, Germany (pictured above). Back then, this was more of a thought experiment and wasn't actually feasible for proper passenger work. The world wouldn't see that until 18 more years, at the 1900 Paris Exhibition. At the exhibition, Louis Lombard-Gérin, a French engineer, would debut the very first trolleybus line in the world. Once again, this was moreso a experiment rather than something a city would use for moving passengers from A to B. 11 more years later, however, the towns of Leeds and Bradford in the UK would be the very first towns to utilize trolleybuses for actual service. Interestingly enough, Bradford was the very last town in the UK to give up it's trolleybuses, in 1972. It wasn't just Europe getting in on trolleybuses, the United States following the first World War would embrace trolleybuses, examples being Boston, San Francisco, and Philadelphia, all towns which use trolleybuses today.
So trolleybuses are cool and all that, but are there any catches?
Well, with everything in life, yes.
Higher rolling resistance, less capacity vs a tram, harder level boarding, wires create obstructions, etc. But out of all of these, the biggest two from what I've seen are:
Higher capital cost
The wires are seen as ugly
The less important one is going to be the one about wires, as that's very much subjective preference. Me personally, I fucking love trolleybus wires. They look pretty damn cool to me. But a lot of people see them as unsightly, and unfortunately, that tends to be ammunition for NIMBYs who will bitch and complain about it driving down the prices of their homes. And speaking of price, a big issue with trolleybuses is that they usually cost more than battery buses or just regular buses. And unfortunately, not every town is going to foot the bill for them, no matter what benefits they can bring.
A big problem trolleybuses are facing is that because of their increased cost, many cities/towns don't want to foot the cost for them, or they do, but the populations don't. This either results in two things happening:
No transit gets built
Something worse is chosen
For the "something worse", it's usually battery-electrics. Unlike a trolleybus, battery-electrics use batteries to power the bus, which results in the bus now having a finite range, requiring wasteful recharging periods, and material-expensive batteries to operate. And unfortunately, more cities are taking the bait.
A good example is in Berlin this year, plans for a trolleybus line got squashed in favor of battery-electrics.
I won't say that trolleybuses are the be all and end all of transit, because they aren't. Far from it. But in a future where the resources we have today may not be there tomorrow, we have to begin moving to more efficient usage of our resources. Battery-electric buses are not the solution to this problem, rather, trolleybuses are a puzzle piece in the solution. And if you don't believe me, there's a very specific country that saw trolleybuses and went "Hey, those are perfect for me, let's overuse the HELL out of them!" /pos
Yep, the Soviet Union saw trolleybuses as a cheap and efficient method of getting cities public transportation, and said "Fuck it, have all the trolleybuses." Some still operate in former Soviet countries to this day, like the one in Kyiv, Ukraine, shown in the picture above.
So what's the point of all this?
The first is to show some transit that isn't always rail. That's obvious.
The second is to show a form of transit that deserves some more credit than you think. The trolleybus combines some of the best elements of trams and regular buses into something that's easy to make and maintain today and tomorrow. Solutions to problems cities are having won't always come from big new innovations, rather, they will usually come from technologies in the past that we used to embrace, but we just don't anymore. Things are getting better, but it will take time. In the meantime, however, get out there, and spread the good word of the trolleybus. Oh, and to also trolleybus your friends. Can't forget that.

I would love to read your take on ‘Jamie through the stones’. What if Jamie travelled with Clare just before Culloden? What do you see happening?
Jamie would have some technology to deal with but not as much as people might think. One in 4 people still had an outdoor/shared toilet in the 1970s. We had an indoor toilet but we didn’t have a bath! When we were small we were bathed in the kitchen sink. Many houses/properties in Scotland needed to be renovated and that was a gradual and expensive process for homeowners.
We also didn’t have a washing machine (twin tub) until the late 70s. My mum, granny and Aunties used the Wash House (called the Wash Hoose where I lived). It was a social event. They went once a week. Did their washing and had a blether (a gossip).
We did have a black and white television in the 60s but we didn’t get a coloured telly until the mid 70s. Radio was still king! We did have a gramophone, then a record player.
People in offices and shops etc. still used handwritten records/accounts. Bigger companies had typewriters and a mainframe computer that took up a whole room but many small and medium businesses still did things the old fashioned way.
Trams, buses and train journeys were commonplace. We walked for the most part. A lot of people didn’t have a car. As prices of items came down they became more affordable and more widespread but often the wealthy were the first ones to have expensive items and the filtering down through the social classes took decades.

Oh gosh! I love this insight. Thank you for sharing!
As far as my take on Jamie through the stones: I think Jamie is a lot like Claire in that he is incredibly adaptable. Whether he was going through the stones to the 60's, 70's, or in the 2000's, I see him as practical, smart, and capable of figuring crap out quickly.
I've thought of writing a Jamie through the stones in the 1940s fic. I imagine him riding a motorcycle in a bomber jacket, getting into a few bar fights, defending some random broad's honor, and finding peace and solace in the countryside whenever he can.
I can see him being enthralled with technology, particularly transportation and communication. He could easily be in finance, architecture, academia, agriculture, publishing. Literally anything.
My fave Jamie through the stones fic to read is The Last All Clear. I love him protecting Claire and loving her before she even knew who he was.
If I were to write something, it would be from Claire's perspective, meeting this timeless man and falling head over heels for him. I don't think Frank would be a part of the story at all. Maybe Jamie being stuck in Scotland and Claire touring the countryside, meeting him, and falling in love. You all know my favorite thing in the world is Jamie and Claire together in the Highlands, making love and sleeping outdoors. Instead of a horse, they ride around on his bike. Perhaps she discovers the truth before he tells her. IDK.
That's the thing about Jamie and Claire for me...their surroundings hardly matter. They're people who can cope and deal with whatever life throws at them as long as they're together. The story for me is about what is between them more so than what is around them.
Ok, I need to stop thinking about this before I actually start writing it. I don't want to neglect my other stories! I need to finish a couple first!
Thanks for the food for thought and your insights into the time!

30 days of autism acceptance
April 1st: Introduce yourself. Talk about who you are as a person. Your age, hobbies, special interests, family, etc. Anything you feel comfortable sharing. (I might not be able to do all)
My name is Alex, I’m 19, I live in Central Europe, close to east. Currently a college student, who can barely pass semesters. My hobbie is drawing I guess, but I’m not an artist. I’m bad at drawing, and barely improved for years so now I rarely draw.
I have many special interests(listed in pin post), but the oldest one is cars. It started when I was 2. The second oldest is buses, it started at the age of 3-4. I love vehicles in general too, every shape and size! My other faves are trains and trams! My dream is to become a train driver, and when I get my driving license, get the family car, she grew close to my heart, she’s 17 years old!
My family? Pretty toxic. My grandparents from my mother’s side are evil(only grandma is alive today, cut ties with her years ago, long story). I have two half sisters, both 35+ years old. My dad is 60+, and my mom is 55+ years old. Like half of my physical and mental issues are inherited from my parents lol. I have two doggies, one is going to turn 9 next month, the other is 1 and a half years old! My chaotic duo <3

Submitted via Google Form: So, I have created a map, putting in cities with distances and stuff. But I am having a lot of trouble with transportation between places.
I am not sure about the real logistics of time, engineering, traffic, etc to have my transportation suitable and efficient.
Say, differences between actual high speed bullet trains, just high speed express trains, local trains and maybe areas they serve. Buses that bypass big cities, going through mountains to get to smaller towns?
I'm kinda attempting to design a whole entire system here actually but making it realistic is well, so hard. In actual real life, I always can't even understand the logistics of real transportation and keep wondering why there is no transportation between A and B, or even simple things like how very low speed cheap transportation like trams still actually work. And... that's just public transport. I also need to work on private transport as well, and you know, the oh so varying road signs, speed limits, laws, etc etc.
I have been actually attempting research on real life. I mean, sometimes I can get it. But, when faced with my own story, it's all a mess. I certainly don't have the facts and I'm messed up.
Feral: In brief, as with any cultural artifact, transportation is a social construct. The how’s and the why’s depend very heavily on the terrain the transportation will cross, the resources the infrastructure requires, and the economic and/or civil value of building up one type of transportation or building up of one area with transportation over another. Factors like politics, classicism, and racism play a huge role, especially if you are looking at American transportation networks and lack thereof.
The thing to keep in mind when trying for verisimilitude with worldbuilding is that most cities aren’t planned. Or if the center is planned, the rest grows organically as they city population grows. Most cities were well developed before the idea of public transportation systems or the need for travel by paved roads was a thing. Some defining features of cities that seem planned from the beginning were in fact, not, and only exist because someone was really inventive. See for example, the subway system of New York or the Boulevards of Paris. For writing purposes, if it is truly necessary for your story (like if you’re writing road-trip style narrative) and you need the kind of detail that a complete work up of transportation would provide, I recommend picking one or two real world examples that are culturally similar to the city or cities you are designing and just kinda… borrow.
Constablewrites: For me, the biggest thing that triggers my plausibility Spidey-sense is the amount of time it takes to get between places. Like, when you have horses covering 200 miles in a day, or people popping instantaneously around Los Angeles between locations that would still be 30 minutes apart even if there were magically no traffic.
Now, sometimes this falls under acceptable breaks with reality. (Would 24 have really worked if Jack had to spend an episode and a half sitting on the 405?) But I feel like in most cases, as long as the length of the trip isn’t way off in either direction given the mode of transportation, technology level, and other established facts about the setting, you don’t need to dig too deeply into the details.
Tex: Congratulations on discovering the field of civil engineering! To be more specific, transportation and traffic engineering. While Feral and Constablewrites bring up excellent points, I will gently deposit a grab-bag of engineering for your perusal:

Railway engineering has a lot of subfields, so you’ll need to be specific on that front. As in nature, engineering relies upon a significant amount of observation. Which cities use what transportation methods, and in what mixture? Why did they pick those? What’s the history behind those decisions? How much does the environment impact these decisions, and how much do cultural biases?
You’ve mentioned that you’ve already come up with cities and their relative distances - how did you come to these conclusions? What are the personalities of these cities? How do they interact with each other? Again, what is the environment like? What’s their level of technological advancement? How much money do these cities receive from their state, or from municipal tax revenue? What are their priorities in transportation?
It sounds like you wish to know the entire depth and breadth of a topic before you muck about in its waters - this is unrealistic, as in real life even the best-trained, most-experienced engineers don’t know everything. Figure out your priorities, and figure out what this world of yours requires in terms of transportation. Get the goals written down first and then work from there - that’s realistic, as is attempting to figure out the solutions to your stumbling blocks. Sometimes the most inane-sounding, ridiculous thing works and it’s not immediately apparent.
Bina: I’ll first answer some of your questions regarding why real life transport has the structure it does, then I’ll give you some advice on how to make “realistic” transportation for your map.
Why is there no transportation between A and B? Why not make a new path? The answer is typically because it’s already possible to get from A to B in an indirect way. And if it’s *possible* to get from A to B, why spend the time, money, and labor *optimizing* the path from A to B? Why spend potentially millions of dollars and months of construction just to cut time off a commute that’s already doable? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Furthermore, maybe there’s other external reasons. Maybe there’s a huge nature reserve between A and B. Or private property owned by someone who won’t allow the government to build across it. Or maybe the land is already reserved for some other project.
Now, why was there no transport between A and B to begin with? Well, lots of reasons. Maybe the landscape doesn’t allow it. Maybe the ground is too soft to build on, or there’s mountains too large to blast through, or the technology at the time means that a direct path isn't feasible and it's all you can do to go an indirect way. Another reason is because maybe a C existed first that was closer to A, with a path from A to C already in place. When B came up, it was easier to go from C to B rather than make the longer path from A to B. Years later it may be the case that C becomes an unimportant town and A and B are bustling hubs that people travel between frequently, but... why make a new road when one already exists? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
That same ideology applies to why “outdated” systems of transport are still operating today. If it works, why take the time and money to tear it down, pave it over, and replace it with something else? Even if these trams or carriages or what-have-you are a waste of money to maintain, a city might keep them for a number of reasons. Maybe they’re a cultural hallmark of the city and tourists love them. Maybe they service niche areas and the outcry of removing access to/from those areas would be huge. Maybe they operate in areas that are impossible for the city to safely and easily construct around. Maybe the city is just lazy or slow with its legislation and never got around to it.
Hopefully that provides some insight.
Now, as for how to realistic public transport in your map. I don’t know what technology level you have or what size cities you’re dealing with, so I’ll take a step back and answer the following: “how do I make a realistic road network across my map that connects all my cities and towns?”
For that, you can take a look at the mapmaking tutorial here. It gives advice on how to add roads to your region map in a natural-looking manner. Simulate which cities/towns came FIRST and connect those together based on how much those places need to communicate, taking into account the landscape. Roads are built between places that EXIST, and I’m assuming your cities weren’t all built at the same time. If you have one city that’s the oldest and largest one in the middle of the country I can guarantee that all roads will lead to it. If a city is particularly important to the economy, it'll have more transportation leading to it. If a city is in the center of many others on the map, it may become a crossroads of travel for the other cities to reach each other. Of course, there are stipulations, and those are listed in the link given. Good luck!

Geneva, the French and the Međimurci
After months of residing in the darkness of inactivity here comes a fresh review of the recent trip to Switzerland. Those 3 days were without expectations and with plenty of spontaneous decisions that turned out...awesome. I even managed get my Master thesis done and sent to print hours before the trip thus not having to bring my laptop there and work at the airport. I would also use this chance to thank again our hosts for the wonderful time we spent there as well as for helping us with the stay in Geneve. Merci beaucoup...or whatever you write it. Now what was all this about, when, why and how...please start scrolling. The whole trip was planned a few months ago as one our best and closest Uni colleagues was going to get married. Since we were sitting next to each other since the day 1 of the University life (and were breaking the Erasmus Intership Exchange ice together writing the letters and creating our portfolios in the bars between the Uni lectures...) there was no way for me not to come there. Wait a bit more to see the wedding pics. The interesting story is that she had met her future husband during Erasmus internship in Paris while I was in Vienna (maybe I should apply again for the exchange?). One of the last things in life I imagined was ending up on a wedding in Switzerland and be surrounded with the French and the Međimurci. On the trip there and back again I was with a few colleagues whom we will refer to as “the Noone”. Let’s start with...
DAY 1: Travelling from Zagreb to Venice Marco Polo Airport. Getting lost in Venice. Evening arrival to Geneve
Just before our trip there were several problems that were kept in secret in order not to spread panic. Our return flight with EasyJet was cancelled due to French Airline’s strike and luckily I was online to check us in on the next one an hour later. Had we not had the second flight the same evening things would gotten nasty with the bus schedule and arriving home on Monday morning to hand in our binded Master’s thesises.
The second crisis emerged early in the morning around 3am when I realized:
a) I left the sunglasses at my barber’s desk the day earlier
b) I forgot the headphones on my desk!!
We travelled with Flixbus, direct line from Zagreb to Marco Polo Airport, at 7.30am and arrived a bit later than scheduled due to traffic problems on the Italian highway and a traffic mess at the bus station in Trieste (sorry Italians, it was another prejudice come true...).
We came to our destination around 2.30pm and had almost 5 hours free before the flight. And what should we do?
Go to Venice of course! For the price of 15 Euros you get the bus return ticket from the airport to Venice. My colleague was there for the first time and for me it was the 3rd. I honestly didn’t expect going there but ... was worth it. The plan was to drink coffee somewhere but we didn’t have time as...umm... I wanted to make a tour around and we got lost on our way back...just a bit. : -) In the end we managed to get in time back.
The overall impression of Venice?
Crowded, hot, stinky...few buildings and streets that impress you in the beginning and then you get bored and start counting nationalities and bricks in the walls. As well as the shades to hide in.
Just before the security check in I realized that I totally messed up with clothes and items in the travel bag...bringing unecessary stuff that took plenty of space. Never again listen to the others and just keep it simple. So I was forced to put my pants, part of ceremonial clothes etc. into the bags of my colleagues. :-D Just like Voldemort with the horcruxes.
Speaking of food and water supplies on your trips and specifically at the airports...there are two kinds of people in this world. Those who buy the bottled water in duty free shops... and those who drink and fill them in the restrooms (toilets). During my 3 days I only drank water from the restroom. Save money, save the nature.
Our flight was around 8pm and I spent most of it (one hour) sleeping dead tired. For those of you who’ve been following me from before you might remember I’ve already been to Switzerland but never in Geneve. (scroll down the blog for those posts).
Geneva airport? While going towards the exit you pass by numerous billboards of the Swiss watches...Rolex, Rolex, Rolex...and Rolex..and so on for the next 5 minutes. The good thing is that all the arriving guests have 80 minutes free public transport ticket so we went to the next stop (Geneve Cornavin). Our hostel (Geneve Hostel) was about 5-7 minutes by foot and close to the Geneva lake. Boys in one room, girls in another to avoid the potential problems. And unplanned weddings.
At the hostel we were also given free public transport ticket that was valid for the whole Saturday and Sunday which helped a lot. It included the train, the boats, the buses and the tram within Geneve. Since France was super close (cca 4 km) there was even a tram line leading there (about 30 minutes)...we heard you can have a cheaper lunch there and planned “to visit France” on Sunday but plans changed.
Before the sleep we searched around the hostel area for some cheap place to grab some food. Now, the word “cheap” in Switzerland is not as same as “cheap” here and the best for your psychological health is not to convert the currency. We found the Ali Kebab place right next to the hostel and ate Chicken Kebab with some salad and French fries for 17,5 Franks, a meal we split for two. This was relatively similar to some prices here so it was not that bad at all. I could have eaten though the whole plate again but my wallet couldn’t. No complaints anyway!
DAY 2: Morning tour around Geneve. Going to the ceremony. The wedding and the afterparty.
I’m a morning person and Saturday morning was no exception. Woke up early, took a shower, breakfast when there aren’t many people and already ready to go at 7.30am. I got the public transport and city landmarks map at the hostel staff and went to the lake with another early bird. Here are some impressions of the streets, people and cityscape.
Plenty of runners with bluetooth headphones, people walking with dogs, the cylists, expensive cars you see in James Bond movies, the specific architecture, plenty of hotels and banks, mostly clean sterile streets, the promenade and the boats. Pretty much international population and French language everywhere. And I don’t speak French except for few words but was interesting to be in an “alien” surroundings. The lake that is as huge as the sea yet fresh water. Ducks everywhere. What I loved was seeing the bike roads across the promenade and the streets of Geneve. More about it on Day 3. Speaking of traffic behaviour they all more or less stop when you approach the pedestrian zebra crossing and stop even 0,5 m before it if the red light turns on. On contrary, here you’d get run over even if you were sitting on your balcony.
We went back to pick up the third early bird and started our little tour around. There were several bridges in the center and you had a boat connection with other side of the lake. There is the huge wheel with cafes around the big bridge. One of the Geneve’s landmarks is the huge fountain which we reached later and had a free shower. One of the things that pleasantly surprised me was (as I had found out later) the artistic project “Happy City” where there were ca. 20 painted pianos placed around the city’s squares, parks, streets and bridges...where you do as it says “Play, I’m here for you”. So I did what they required you to do. Playing piano on Lake Geneva was another thing I never thought about ... but now I can say “new achievement unlocked”.
We walked a bit more to the inside of the other side up and down the streets, seen some churches and lots of interenational bars and restaurants. Expensive exotic cars again..and then decided it’s time to go back to hostel.
On our way back we checked out Lidl and took some emergency food to have just in case of unexpected hunger. This saved us on the next day. I also almost forgot that right now I can buy and drink Rivella.
Travelling to Gland and the Wedding.
We jumped into our suits and wedding clothes and went to the train station around 2pm. We had to arrive to Gland which is ca 20 minutes away from Geneve and there our fiancée’s family was going to pick us up and transport to the ceremony’s place. While there we got to know our French roommates and colleagues offiancé.
What I liked (and probably others) there weren’t many people as it usually is the case here. I won’t go into details here and throw emotions but here are some things. Close friends and family from both sides, that’s it. The ceremony took place at the fairy location called Le Moulin du Creux. Beautiful house with garden, creek and forest around located 100 meters from the road. Check the nice photos of it and you’ll get the idea.
We had two-three pastors, the French ones and the Croatian one. Since most of us didn’t speak nor understood French we had a translator. And it was funny because she was a Slovene translating into Serbian mostly. :)) Nevertheless, an interesting ceremony and a special moment for our now married couple!
What was also new was that after taking pictures and rushing to the tables with food and drinks we also had a game organized - seek and answer game. They hid around 30 photos around the area and we got the papers with questions in French and Croatian. For my team it was kind of a fail in the end. We were trying to learn a few useful French phrases such as J'ai soif which means “I’m thirsty” when sneaking around the table with served drinks.
The other games included a catapult and a cubic football. There was also a gigantic version of the Jenga Tower which was fun to play. We took and received as a memory the polaroid photo with our couple and later moved inside for the dinner and the rest of the show. We watched short movie clips that fiance’s family created about him and our friend. The only problem we had was that we didn’t understand anything as there were no subtitles. :-)
After few more games and meals it was time to go out on the field and light the lanterns. This was a cool thing and my first time to show up and do the thing actually, I think we all enjoyed it. I have no photos of it though but you can imagined what it looked liked having many of them flying up. Let’s hope non of them fell on the forest below. :-D
Soon followed afterparty with some dance music. Some people already had to part and leave. Finally, around 2am we also decided to leave as we didn’t want to miss our train back to Geneve. And of course we missed the first one by being 5 minutes late.
We came to the hostel around 4am and straight to bed.
DAY 3: Tour around Geneve one more time. Coffee & city bikes. Departure.
The final day is here. So far everything great! We made a deal to meet with friends from Nyon around 10.30h at the giant wheel in the center. Shower, breakfast and baggage packed and locked in the hostel. Ready to go.
We took the boat to the other side and soon met with our friends. We then wasted around an hour going to the “old center” only to find nothing interesting there. However, we saw more of the public pianos and parks. For the next half an hour we were on a quest to find a solid cafe to sit and talk about life.
We ended up below the giant wheel and had a tiny cup of coffee for 4 Franks. Naturally, we stayed for 2 hours sitting & chatting there to compensate the loss. I ran out of cash and asked the waiter where to go. After all, Geneva is the city of banks and I hadn’t seen a single ATM machine there. Before running for some cash we decided to visit the giant fountain. On our way there I stopped by the public piano which was now free of ambitious moms and their kids who just pressed random keys but had a cool photo. Actually, I was doing the same. It was funny to have the unusual audience around you.
Soon by the fountain. Time for a group photo!
Time flew by quickly and our friends had to find the bus station as they were leaving sooner than us. We went to the center in search of places to eat and after parting with them three of the original squad left. We had a few hours left before rushing to the train station and the airport. Having lunch in France? Visiting France by trams? Visiting France on bikes? Using city bikes to go around? We rushed to the nearst bike station and...all the bikes were gone. Second chance at the one across the bridge. We somehow were lazy to walk and wasted time on the boat. What happened there? Only two bikes left. I agreed to run to the other station as the rest follows me. But the guy working there couldn’t find the keys of the bike so we waster 10 minutes there filling the papers and waiting for him to come to common sense. The third and the last luck before giving up was using the tram to the Station No. 5 ... and...three bikes left, keys in the hands and off we go!
There is no better feeling than going around the new place by bike. Pure freedom and flexbility. We gave 20 Franks deposit and decided towards the north along the lake. Bike routes almost everywhere. Going between the streets was fun. No fear of the vehicles around us.
youtube
We did cca 10 km in total in about more than hour stopping to take the pictues (the evidences). The idea was to go to France but by democracy 2:1 we gave up from that idea fearing something could go wrong and we get stuck in the middle of nowhere and miss the plane. So we returned the bikes close to our hostel, took the baggage and went to the train station. There we found a nice souvenir and chocolate shop....you can’t leave without one kitschy fridge magnet and a few Toblerones. We met the other Croats who were going back by plane to Venice and I again reorganized my bagge stuff into 2-3 bags of other people. The food from Lidl helped a bit. As well as the good old fresh water from the restroom. I slept again in the plane this time successfully hiding my cabin baggage under my seat as the plane was crowded and full of passangers because of the cancelled flight. New achievement unlocked. We had almost 3 hours to wait for the 2.15am Flixbus for Zagreb. Being dead hungry we checked the available offers at the backery there and found some snacks to survive till home. This time Flixbus didn’t have the second floor (on Friday we found the first row spots on the 2nd floor, the best view and the best way to get killed in an accident). But who cares, soon home! The route was shorter as we stopped only in Ljubljana...I woke up two times in total and the second on just at the Croatian border. The bus arrived precisely at 7.30am to Zagreb, to the most beautiful of the ugliest bus stations in the area. Finally, seeing “Mamiću cigane” grafitti around the station I can say “Welcome back home!”.

How To Get To Theramore From Stormwind
Dec 22, 2014 I know there's one from SW to the Nelf Island, Nelf Island to Draenei Island. Then the one to Borean Tundra. I know there used to be one from Menethil to Theramore? But yeah is the Theramore boat and the Booty Bay to Ratchet the only points for Alliance to get to South Kalimdor? Do the starter quest for Legion and get your hearthstone. Or thanks to u/bratleh just skip to Azuna and then fly up to Dalaran and get your Hearthstone. Garrison (WoD) Why? There are a few reasons. A garrison comes with another hearthstone and a level 3 garrison has a port to Warspear/Stormshield with ports to Orgrimmar/Stormwind.

Unit 1 - Part C
Silver Arts Award Unit 1 Part C: review arts events
What event did you attend? I went to two event. The first place I went to was the London transport museum in Covent Garden. Here I went to an event: a tour of the museum in which I learnt about its history. I also went to the London Transport Museum’s Depot in Acton, on a tour which expanded on what we learnt in the Covent Garden Museum in terms of the different vehicles and designs present in its history and the characters who drove these buses, but also gave us new insight into what goes on with the Museum behind the scenes.
What did you see/do?
At both events I saw old London buses, as well as trains, trams and even carriages (horse-drawn and electric) from times gone by. I asked questions about interesting people such as Isambard Kingdom Brunel and collated information on him from the LTN. In Acton, we learnt about the first black female bus driver and how groundbreaking this was. We also learnt that women could not drive underground trains until 1973, which shocked female members of our group.
When did it take place?
I went in late June to both places and am continuing to visit them for filming work throughout early July. I went on a Saturday several times and will continue to do so until shooting stage in Holborn House later in July, which will be during the week. Both actual tours took about half a day each and were each on a saturday.
Describe what happens at the arts event
Jenna took us on a tour of the TFL museum in Covent Garden. I saw some artwork which really stuck out to me from a creative point of view.
I really enjoyed the TFL posters, the favourite of mine being an old poster for ZSL (the London Zoo). The advert was effective, as it had a drawing of penguins standing in an amusing pose yet at the same time vivid and life-like. This would mean that it appealed to both children and their parents at the same time and not only made this zoo look appealing, but also made TFL look like a fun, enjoyable and, perhaps most importantly, welcoming, transport service. It was not something you would expect to see on a poster for a transport network and thus certainly caught the viewer’s attention.
Another thing which appealed to me were the TFL signs. The signs are of course iconic, but all put together in a display case made me realise their artistic value, not only as individual works of art but also as a whole. We learnt how the signs were designed to be really unique: a special font was created in 1916 (known as the Johnston font) and the signs - except special variants - all consisted of the familiar TFL colours (red, white and blue - perhaps not coincidentally also the colours of the Union Jack) and were designed in the shape of famous Roundel logo of TFL.
Seeing all these together was almost overwhelming and showed just how many stations there are in London supported by TFL. It reminded of how big our city is and how much work would have to go into not only providing transport from station to station, but also providing beautiful logos for each station. I looked at all of these signs in their glass case and it was quite moving to see some of them, as they were relics of a bygone era in my city’s history.
We also got taken on a tour by Jenna of the TFL depot in Acton, in which we saw old maps used by the transport service. My favourite were the novelty maps, one of which was made out of lego and another which had different tube lines showing famous figures in history put into different (e.g. leaders of China). It was interesting to see the different colours and seating designs (textile) used for different old trains.
Museum:
(taken at the Depot but I saw a similar picture at the museum - I used this bigger image to avoid pixelation)
Depot:
Which art forms were involved?
We were artistically inspired by the way museum was laid out, as it felt like the interesting objects were each leading on to the next one, thus pulling us through the chronologically ordered museum. We saw the design art form used in curating the museum, as well as the Moquette of TFL (textile design). We also saw the graphic design on old TFL maps, which inspired us in making our movie poster.
At the depot, what was used was textile and, like at the museum, curation was also important, as was transport design.
What was the context of the event? (e.g. was it part of large tour/a temporary exhibition/part of a film festival/an online event etc.)
It was part of a large tour of a permanent exhibition at TFL and was organised as part of our filmmaking project in association with TFL.
The depot tour was similarly part of the course we were doing and is normally only open to the public once a year.
Was there anything unexpected about what you saw/experienced?
Yes, I was surprised by how beautiful the designs of the various TFL signs (and map booklets) were and how much thought, creativity and love went into making them. I was also surprised by the various types of seats used in the trains, as not only would they be aesthetically pleasing for a film shot, but they were also designed to look beautiful and to provide comfort for passengers, perfected over decades (their design changed very music).
I was surprised to see how old buses could look like an art installation when all displayed together in their different colours (most were different shades of red, but one countryside bus stuck out with is magnificent dark green tint) - an amazing piece of curation. I was impressed also by the futuristic interior of a 1970s/80s train, which looked like a piece of art in itself.
What did you think was good and why?
I think the tour by TFL was good, as it let me understand the design aspects better and how they related to the history of London and TFL, which I would not have been able to work out on my own, as previously I had no idea about design or how something could connect so deeply to the people of London and they transport they used. The tour of both places was interesting and brought the old vehicles to life and made me imagine the sort of people who went on them.
I thought the colours of the seats was great, as the mixes of often reds and blues made these very old vehicles still come to life and would have made it a pleasant experience for the passengers.
Was there anything about the arts event you didn’t like ? Why?
I did not like that we did not get to link the design of the TFL logo, seats etc. more to how our films looked, as the design of these logos and vehicles was and is so beautiful that it would be a shame not to include these obvious sources of inspiration in our film-making process.
I did not like the fact that they did not have even older vehicles like very ancient horse-drawn carriages at the Depot, as I wanted to see a longer history from then till now, but it was still a great experience.
What was the creative impact of the event?
Seeing all the TFL signs together reminded me of the vastness of London, but it also reminded me how a transport network can create logos which not only serve a purpose but are also very beautiful. It also reminded me of the work that goes into TFL, not only in providing transporting but also of creating each of these logos and creating posters which can interest children and adults alike.
I have learnt that one must not forget the role of transport in making a city work. Transport functions beneath the surface (sometimes quite literally) and so those who use it can take it and maybe even its staff for granted, when in fact it has played a vital role in expanding London and creating the modern culture of our city.
I will take away with me the thought that transport can serve my local area and various modes of transport in all forms are highly beneficial to London. I will think of how hard the TFL staff work, as well those creative figures who worked on making the logos which are almost equally important in the transport service.
Did the event develop your knowledge and understanding of the art form(s)?
The first part of the event (museum tour) made me understand better the purpose of design in creating a positive public image of the transport service and made me see how graphics could be used to create appealing images to the public, which hadn’t really occurred to me before in the domain of public transport.
The second part of the event (Depot tour) made me see how transport design can be used to give new life to old vehicle and how curation can be used to show how vehicles improved over time without making any appear inferior to the other.
How will you share your review with other people, and how will you evidence this (e.g. photos, videos, feedback from others)?
I will include photos of the transport which I have taken and I will get feedback from other members of my group, as well as our advisors and the museum staff and I will upload all I have written, filmed and photographed etc. online on a blog run by the HCA and used by our group.

Traffic management in this game is a fascinating puzzle to me, it’s definitely solvable but it takes some creative management. It’s also quite different than SimCity 4. The most difficult traffic to management isn’t intra-city traffic, it’s traffic from the outside; tourists, new residents, and import & export trucks. You can’t survive without proper traffic flow. Industries shut down from lack of timely goods, and residents leave because there are no jobs because the industries shut down. Public transit is still useful because it creates more space *for* the outside traffic, but you really can’t get around having a proper highway system. I think I’m slowly improving at it. I’m trying things like giving the traffic more chances to split up before it actually leaves the highway system, putting more thought into where and how it connects, and avoiding planning pitfalls like making there be one correct route to get *everywhere*. That last one is harder than it sounds! Some of it is stuff you wouldn’t encounter in real life, like trucks trying to go down side roads and taking a much slower route through several intersections because it’s technically “shorter” than going over a little to main street. Connectivity is also VERY convenient for domestic traffic, and more importantly for services like schools, hospitals, fire stations, etc. It’s so easy and efficient (& somewhat true to life) to have a city grow out from a central “hub” road. So the trick is essentially to make it always more convenient for highway traffic to stay on the highway until they’re near their destination than to exit early and use local roads. But almost all of that traffic wants to also get back ON the highway, so it’s not like you can have constant off ramps & on ramps (because on ramps are always at least slightly disruptive to highway traffic flow). The more I think about it, you essentially want a branching structure for your highways; divide up the incoming traffic until only manageable amounts ever enter a particular region of your city’s local road network, and conversely aggregate traffic from that road network back into the highway system piece by piece. It’s not a perfect analogy but it’s roughly what you want.
Local traffic of course does still need addressing, though like I mentioned earlier at least there you have public transit. Sure, late game, external traffic can also be somewhat reduced with cargo docks & train stations, but that’s to a much lesser extent. I love how many options there are for public transit in this game. Except for ferries. Sure Blimps aren’t very efficient, but god it’s so much fun to see them floating through the sky. But anyway, to be honest, I haven’t ever had such dire traffic woes that WEREN’T related to highways that I’ve given local traffic flow as much thought. Even with just taking an educated guess at station placement, the metro is so good, and I’ve only just begun to toy with trams & monorails... buses do also help of course, though they’re less exciting.

Melbourne 2019
I’ve been to Sydney, Brisbane and now off to another popular place down under. Yes, I’ve been to Australia a lot! My latest trip was in Melbourne this time.
Sorry for the very late blog post. Fourteen days plus two more for a cancelled flight back home is not an easy trip to microblog. The best thing I can do is provide the most concise paragraph and just mesmerize you with the photos.
Anyways, here we go!
Tullamarine
Direct flight from Manila to Melbourne via Cebu Pacific (not highly recommended). I arrived in Tullamarine - aka Melbourne Airport (MEL). From there, I met my high school bestfriend Cindy is responsible for my trip.
Skybus
Off to the City Centre. The most convenient way to travel between the airport is by taking the SkyBus Express Airport Transfers. It is a double-decker bus that runs for 24 hours (varying frequencies throughout the day). The journey lasts 30-45 minutes. Riding this will give you a great view of Melbourne.
Travel Essentials
First thing’s first - get your transportation card. If Sydney has the Opal Card and Brisbane has Translink Go Card, Melbourne has Myki. It is your ticket to travel on trains, trams and buses in the City and many parts of regional Victoria. You can easily buy it at a station and top up at a huge range of shops (including all 7-Eleven stores), Myki machines and station ticket offices.
Southern Cross Station
From the airport via Skybus, we arrived at the Southern Cross Station. This is one of Australia’s most popular destinations - all sorts of enticing things you will see - cafes, restaurants, etc. I think it is a melting pot of people coming from every nation, speaking different languages.
It is actually the most preferred station for various distances and directions from the centre of Melbourne is just a straight-forward train ride away from here, providing perfect day trips for the savvy traveller.
MELBOURNE’S COUNTRYSIDE
Bird Feeding - Dandenong Ranges
From the City, down to the countryside - just like any other places in Australia, I started my trip by feeding them birdies. Melbourne also offers a variety of birdwatching niches to explore.
#BirdBite
Tesselaar Tulip Festival
Then off to somewhere I’ve never been before - Tesselaar Tulip Festival. This festival began in 1954. Held over four weeks. It offers various themed days and weekends including Turkish, Dutch, Food, Wine & Jazz and Irish along with eight days packed with school holiday fun.
When all the tulips are in bloom, there are nearly one million tulips on display. There are 130 varieties of tulips at the farm, so you could literally spend hours ogling and taking photos of them and their kaleidoscope of colours.
Orlinda Heritage Walk
Then we passed by the charming village of Olinda found at the highest part in the Dandenong Ranges. It has craft shops, antique stores, boutiques and cafés. It is renowned for its European influence and features a selection of German- and French-style restaurants and enjoy some of the region’s local produce.
St Paul’s Cathedral
Now off to the City the next day. First off is the St. Paul’s Cathedral. It is located at the opposite of the Federation Square, on Melbourne's busiest intersection.
This neo-Gothic St. Paul’s Cathedral is a Melbourne landmark, built between 1880 and 1931. Designed by William Butterfield, the cathedral’s architecture is described as Gothic transitional, combining Early English and Decorative Gothic styles. Highlights include the fine polychromatic brickwork, beautifully patterned floor tiles and mosaics, banded stonework, fine timbered roof and tiled dado walls.
Graffitti
Your city trip will not be complete without going through these alleyways where you will find awesome graffiti. Artists change it every now and then.
In these alleyways, just say “pssssst!” and they will turn around and look at your camera.. lol!
Footy Weekend
It doesn’t take long to see how much the locals love sport in Australia, especially in Melbourne. They would even consider it as a holiday.
Australians love a huge number of different sports, including cricket, soccer, rugby union, rugby league and basketball, but nothing quite matches their passion for Australian Rules Football. Originating in where else - Melbourne Victoria, it has spread around the country.
PINOY COMMUNITY
Sunday Church & Community Services
It was nice to be adopted by a Pinoy group for two weeks. They still carries Filipino culture and tradition even if they are in a foreign country.
Fratelli
But then we ate at an Italian restaurant :) Your trip will never be complete without a trip to an Italian restaurant here. Melbourne has a big Italian influence.
Frankston Pier
Frankston Pier has always been a popular fishing destination along Port Phillip Bay. The pier offers a good range of fishing species for anglers all year round. You just have to deal with the birds and the crows.
Lexie
Coming from Dubai is another best friend. This trip is sort of a reunion after the last one we had in Dubai. We just like meeting up in different parts of the world. Sleep over in her place is the first agenda :)
Grilld
Back to the city. Just along the Southern Cross station, you will find Grilld. It is a self-proclaimed 'gourmet burger' franchise Grill'd rolled into hipster laneways and streets across the country. If you want a change from the usual KFC, Hungry Jacks or Maccas, Grilld offers hand-crafted burgers made with high quality ingredients and interesting flavour combinations.
Grocery
Before sleeping over at Lexie’s, we did some grocers. Of course my fave Honey Soy Chicken Chips.
Just Chill Indoors
Taking a break from all the traveling and sightseeing. It is so nice to just have a chill day and have a movie marathon and do some laundry.
Deakin University
The main reason why we came to Melbourne - to witness my HS bestfriend walk on stage and graduate at Deakin University. Stage bestfriends. It was an experience witnessing a graduation in a foreign country. Best part is the post-ceremony function :)
Great Ocean Road Arch
Off to the Twelve Apostles. Our first stop was the Memorial Arch, which is located just past the city of Torquay. The arch is a symbolic monument as it represents the gateway to the Great Ocean Road. Not only that, but the Memorial Arch also represents a piece of history. It pays homage to the soldiers who survived World War I and built the Great Ocean Road. If you’re an avid history geek, there are actually a handful of plaques on-site which you can read up on.
Oorla Lodge Forrest
Because we arrived almost night time, we had to stop over at the Oorla-Lodge Forrest. It is situated at quiet residential street. Surrounding the area are cool waterfalls, lakes, dams and rivers. We just spent the night chilling at the lounge room over a wood fire and did movie marathon.
Platypi Chocolate Factory
The next day, in Victoria's Otway region, we visited was the Platypi Chocolate in Forrest. It is located on the township mountain bike and walking trailhead, Platypi Chocolate is a great place to break a trip, finish a walk or ride or start a leisurely day. You can sit amongst the trees and enjoy a hot chocolate that comes with a little theatre; sip a wine or an iced chocolate while listening to the birds sing; look for a real life echidna from the balcony while munching a honeycomb-filled chocolate variety.
Stevensons Falls Walk
There is a lot of bushwalking you can do in AU and one of them is walking towards Stevenson’s Falls. These falls are located at the end of a gravel road approx 6 kms from Barramunga. The valley has a campground available from the day picnic area. You can have the 500metre walk on a graded trail.
Port Campbell National Park
The Port Campbell National Park is a national park in the south-western district of Victoria, Australia. It features an array of sheer cliffs overlooking offshore islets, rock stacks, gorges, arches, and blow-holes. As part of the Shipwreck Coast, it hosts several tourist attractions; including The Twelve Apostles, the London Arch (formerly London Bridge), Loch Ard Gorge, the Gibson Steps, and The Grotto.
Twelve Apostles
The Twelve Apostles were formed by erosion. Their proximity to one another has made the site a popular tourist attraction. The harsh and extreme weather conditions from the Southern Ocean gradually eroded the soft limestone to form caves in the cliffs, which then become arches that eventually collapse, leaving rock stacks. These massive limestone structures tower 45 metres above the ocean and were formed some 20 million years ago as the sea gradually eroded the soft craggy limestone cliffs.
Though the view from the promontory by the Twelve Apostles never included twelve stacks. Seven of the original eight stacks remain standing at the Twelve Apostles viewpoint, after one collapsed in July 2005.
Loch Ard Gorge
Loch Ard Gorge is amazing and only a few minutes drive west of The Twelve Apostles. It was one of the most stunning beaches on the Great Ocean Road
Loch Ard Gorge is named after the ship Loch Ard, which ran aground on nearby Muttonbird Island at the end of a three-month journey from England to Melbourne.
Take the stairs down to the beach and sit in wonder. And there are three easy walks you can take to discover the area and getting viewpoints.
The London Arch (Bridge)
London Arch was formed by a gradual process of erosion, and originally was a complete double-span and was attached to the mainland.
The arch closer to the shoreline collapsed unexpectedly in 1990 leaving two tourists stranded on the outer part until they were rescued by a helicopter. Prior to the collapse, the arch was known as London Bridge because of its similarity to its namesake.
The Grotto
The Grotto is perhaps the most enchanting of all the rock formations in this part of Australia. Part-blowhole, part-archway, part-cave, it offers a peaceful place to enjoy the sea views and soak in the wonderful things nature is capable of.
Standing about halfway up the cliff from the sea level, the geological formation is reachable via a decked staircase that leads down from the viewing platform at the top. You can either view the wonder from above, or head down and explore it at eye-level.
Inside, the Grotto is filled with smooth boulders and serene rock pools that have been carved out of the limestone. For the best view, look into the Grotto from the lower viewing platform, where you can see the horizon, the pools, and the jutting rock formations in one go.
San Remo Coastal Circuit
San Remo is the gateway to Phillip Island, a lively seaside town where fishing and dining options abound and pelicans keep watch along the foreshore. Yes, it was my first time to see some Pelicans. The town of San Remo sits at the end of the bridge connecting Phillip Island to the mainland.
If you love yourself some good ol’ fish and chips, San Remo Fisherman’s Co-op serves up some of the best fish and chips in the area. We bought some before heading over to Phillip Island.
Phillip Island
Located a few hours from the city, Phillip Island is a weekend hot spot for locals looking to enjoy some beach time. The island is renowned for the nightly penguin parade (when thousands of penguins return from the sea to nest), its koala sanctuary, and the huge seal colony that lives offshore. The island can be visited as a day trip, but due to infrequent buses, I would recommend spending at least a night here!
Panny’s Chocolate Factory
Panny’s Amazing World of Chocolate is a series of experiences, each dedicated to another facet of the story of chocolate. Visitors embark on a self guided exploration of the wonders that come from the humble cocoa bean.
There are machines with buttons to push and levers to pull, games of skill, lots of chocolate exhibitions and attractions and a unique hands-on chocolate making device where you create your own chocolate masterpiece that travels along a conveyor belt and is delivered to you, ready to eat. You can learn everything about chocolate making from the bean to the bar and watch Panny’s creations being made by our chocolatiers.
On top of all this, you can produce your very own extraordinary chocolate bar with Panny’s Amazing Chocolate Machine and fill it with the weirdest and wackiest tastes you’re ever likely to find.
Philip Island Koala Conservation Sanctuary
A trip to the land down under can’t possibly be complete without seeing some koalas. Just a 15-minute drive away from Churchill Island is Phillip Island’s very own Koala Reserve. Here, you can get up close to and observe the koalas in their natural habitat, the Australian bushland. Along these boardwalks, you will have exceptional views and exclusive photo opportunities with the koalas. Not only that, but if you’re lucky, you might even get to spot some adorable wallabies and native birds!
The Noobies :)
The Nobbies is a must visit. Next to the Nobbies centre is a boardwalk. It is a short and easy walk with only a few steps and you are welcomed with some amazing views of Point Grant, Seal Rocks and Bass Straight… From the spectacular view of the boardwalk, you will see nesting penguins in the natural sea bird gardens.
Offshore from The Nobbies are Seal Rocks, home to Australia’s largest Australian Fur Seal colony, so drop a coin into the viewing binoculars and see how many you can spot.
Watching the waves pound against the 50 million year old dark basalt rocks is simply mesmerising and a bold reminder of how formidable Mother Nature really is spectacular!
Melbourne CBD
Back to the City to see more of Melbourne’s Sights and Sounds. First, a drop by to the Post Office to deliver something and the rest.. Just walking around. Here’s more:
The City Circle Tram
More than just a means of free transportation, the City Circle Tram provides “hop-on, hop-off” service between Melbourne’s sightseeing attractions, including Federation Square, the Old Treasury Building, Parliament House, and the Princess Theater. There’s a running recorded commentary as you pass or stop at a place of historical, cultural, or architectural significance.
Flinders Street
Right along the route of the free City Circle train and across the street from Flinders Street Station lies Federation Square. This open square also serves up stellar people-watching. I like to take lunch here and just watch the city go by. Below the square on the river are also a number of restaurants and outdoor bars.
Brunetti
State Library of Victoria
Originally built in 1856, the State Library of Victoria is a historic institution that sees 8 million visitors a year. The library has grown into an event space that’s a source of pride for city residents. There is always a queue of people ready to pounce on the open desks. The famous central rotunda with its octagonal shape, original dark wood furniture, and book-lined walls is definitely something not to miss.
Just fixing my baggage
The highlight of my trip was when my flight was canceled. I had to stay in Melbourne for a couple of days more. It was stressful but I just tried to enjoy the free accommodation and food. Anyways, cant really rely on Cebu Pac when it comes to long haul flights, I decided to book Qantas Air on my way back to Manila.
Between all the various day trips and the plethora of activities in the city, you won’t find yourself short on things to do while you’re visiting Melbourne.

Smart City Plan for Linux will be bit later
Smart City Plan city builder game just announced for Windows PC, but Linux support to come later. Thanks to developer Ambiera. The release is due to launch in early 2020 via Steam. The games also available to Wishlist too.
Linux Support:
Smart City Plan uses a custom created engine. The same as used by our previous game "Business Magnate". But extended quite a bit of course to be able to cope with bigger worlds, more cars etc. I personally also use Linux. So I'd love to do a Linux port as well. But it won't be available at release, unfortunately. But maybe a bit later, hopefully.
Take this as you will. The fact that Smart City Plan development already includes a Linux user. Chances are, we will see a native build. Sadly, not at release. Of course, Wishlist support from the community will benefit greatly. While the gameplay itself does look quite hopeful as is Proton support. While developer Ambiera is happy to announce their next upcoming game. Smart City Plan itself a modern city builder game. So you can plan zones, roads, public transport. While planning things like trains, trams, buses, subways, and even the hyper tube. Above all, you can set taxes and policies. Plus implement smart city technologies. And we also have the first gameplay footage available.
Smart City Plan - Announcement Trailer
youtube

Including those hyper cube tracks, bridges, or even spaceports.
Features:
Public transport for Smart City Plan. Such as trains, trams, buses, subways, hyper tube, and more
Decide policies about energy and water usage. Also things like insulation, smart garbage management, taxes, etc
Write laws about gun control and anti-corruption. As well as pollution, speed limits, gambling and more
Turn your city literally green. While enforcing the usage of green living walls
Attract special industries like space companies
Solve traffic problems with an array of utilities. Such as an intelligent road/rail building method
Unlock sandbox mode to place every building exactly where you want it to be
Zoning for commercial, industry, agriculture, and offices. Including 3 types of residential areas
Smart City Plan is already available to Wishlist on Steam. Since the game Preorders are also live on the official website. Priced at 12.99€ ($14.35 USD). Gamers can get access to the beta version this way as well (Windows PC), once available. While Linux support itself will be after the early 2020 release.

RECOLLECTIONS of HUNGARY
Our bus trip to Zagreb from Plitvice was definitely the 'local ' experience Tony had been hanging out for. Not only did we stop frequently to pick up local scout groups, wandering minstrels etc, but the driver engaged in a full on conversation with a man sitting in the 1st seat behind him. This entailed turning his head to conduct his conversation which resulted in our bus meandering all over the road regardless of oncoming traffic. The bus schedule had allocated 2 1/2 hours for a 135km distance but we were feeling seriously doubtful that we would arrive on time or at all.
At one of the villages a old man boarded the bus and he was 89 years old, had been an Olympian pentathlon athlete and had participated in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne. He spoke 7 languages and his English, while rusty, was adequate for us. He displayed such pride in his country and we got a run down of all the major landmarks en route to Zagreb-better than any booked tour.
Miraculously we arrived on time and after discovering where to catch our next bus we continued on to Hungary and Budapest. Our introduction to Hungary was less than welcoming: we stopped for a break shortly after our border crossing and after a couple of hours we needed it. The asking price to use the loo was 400 kuna- about $2. Unprepared, we had no local currency, and no euro note small enough for their change machine. Big queues at checkout too so we just had to cross our legs and wait to get back on the bus. The closed door lost its handle in the pitch dark. But (wee) overcame 🤣.
Public transport in a foreign country can be very daunting, especially with no internet and few English instructions. First we tried Uber-none in Budapest. Then we thought of a tram but couldn't but couldn't work our where to catch one, let alone which. In the end we decided on a train. We bought a ticket and got some garbled instructions on where to go and with little confidence boarded our first train. We found generally that people gave very vague instructions, leaving us frustrated and confused, but we gradually found our bearings.
Budapest is a city guaranteed to dwarf you. Every building towers over you and all the statues are massive. It is very ostentatious and almost oppressive, however there are many places of beauty and magnificence. Our first treat was the national gallery, where paintings of 5 x 3 metres were displayed. (Nicky) I'm not usually an art fan but these paintings, dated back centuries were amazing.
We also visited the Jewish synagogue and holocaust memorial. There were 600000 Hungarian Jews killed at Auschwitz during the Second World War and many were later exhumed and returned to Budapest, where they were placed to rest in a cemetery at the synagogue. It was a sobering experience. We managed to tick off most of the "10 best things to do in Budapest" - visiting parliament, the chain bridge, St. Stephens basilica (where we even went to mass), and a trip on the Danube. The first day we walked everywhere and were exhausted so next day we purchased a "hop-on, hop-off bus" ticket. This experience was not as easy as it seemed. Red buses, pink buses, blue buses, yellow buses and variations with and without giraffe heads, all ply their trade around the city forming a spaghetti like tangle of intermingled routes, some of which were included in our "package" and some not. Tony had a sense of humour failure of epic proportions and Nicky floated on and off buses with gay abandon, trying to placate the grumblebum. All this in 35 degree heat might I add. We did however, manage an included night tour of the city and a bowl of free goulash soup.
Hundreds of young people gather here every day, drinking, smoking and hanging out with their feet in the water.
This is a replica of the parliament building made from marzipan!
We "I'm making a gourmet breakfast" said Nicky. My anticipation grew as she piled muesli, yoghurt, banana, cream (bought from a Hungarian shop owner as "full cream milk"), topped off with a liberal sprinkling of sugar. It was only when we started tucking in that we discovered to our dismay that the white granules in the green packet were actually salt! Thanks Nicky!
Our breakfast provided a metaphor for our "charming, newly renovated flat...in the most gorgeous part of Budapest...with a terrace for a lovely breakfast or for smoking." More aptly phrased "derelict building still under reconstruction with rudimentary facilities overlooking decaying brick walls in a seedy Budapest back street". I can report that the breakfast was better than the terrace! The latter being a 4x4m patch of dirty, weed infested concrete surrounded by high stone/cement walls you couldn't possibly see over. Oh... and a rusty pipe that might have served as a washing line a couple of centuries ago. The bedroom, fitted with heavy burglar bars, looked out on the "terrace". Late on our second day there Nicky discovered that were unsecured to the wall, and easily swung out to provide easy access to our worldly possessions, not to mention us!
The night we arrived we piled a few days of dirty laundry into the provided washing machine, sans soap dispenser, which sprayed water as the cycle started. McGyver-style, I managed to stem the flow with a cover made from a plastic egg tray and sat back contented as the machine churned away. It was Nicky again who discovered a while later that the kitchen floor was inches deep in water, courtesy of a leaking inlet tap in the sink cupboard! It was at this point that we began to feel a little disgruntled, and duly passed our thoughts on to our charming host, holidaying as he was in far-off Sardinia.
We bore the incident stoically. However, our Airbnb review of the place did not mince words!
On our last evening there we attended a concert in St Stephens basilica - a string quartet playing pieces by Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, etc. It was a wonderful experience in this huge, centuries old cathedral.
It must be mentioned that while waiting for the performance in the nearby piazza, we happened across a fair dunkum italian restaurant, where Tony was persuaded to try an affegato- basically a shot of espresso topped with vanilla ice cream and served with a spoon. The rich aroma filled coffee oozes up around the ice cream and provides an ice coffee second to none. He had two in succession.
