that's what i first meme when i saw your lovely ask! hahahah

Introductions

So its a fandom based on the epic fantasy series that follows for the most part, 2 soulmates, from their childhood all the way to their older years as they grow from friendship, partners to lovers. And I have to admit, the way it's written is almost euphoric. It's utterly lyrical.

So introductions now put aside, 'Fitzloved' is the ship name for "Beloved" (one of his many names) name of the characters and "Fitz". They are the two ongoing protagonists in one of the most respect and wonderful high fantasy series ever created, Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb. They are the main couple shall we say that span the 16 book series. I think a lot describe it as the "mona lisa of fantasy series" within the genre. It's aesthetic is very much evermore meets folklore meets Merlin. Its veryyyyy cozy fantasy and perfect for the season but also the Fall/winter.

The big 5 writers of fantasy rn i have been told are: Brandon's, Robin Hobb's, GRRM (Although he's lost a lot of respect in the community because of his insane hiatus!), Steven Erickson's (Malazan series) and Joe Abercrombie. While you will see with the Cosmere, Brandon is very much straight to the point, prioritises fights, magic system building and very cohesive ensamble casts. Unlike her peers, Robin Hobb on the other hand, is a delicacy. A slowly made dessert that has sweet and salty tastes if you will. And another defining feature is that her series does not involve a massive war at the epicentre of the fantasy plot, which ironically is rare in high fantasy now a days.

HOWEVER. The WAY in which i was introduced to this series is kind of dumb and silly, i.e. very me lol. i stumbled across a fiction on ao3 under 'in a the cabin era way' tag and stumbled across @tragediegh's soul-binding, amazing wonderful fiction called Of Cats and Closed Doors that is still ongoing and she updates mostly weekly! At first, not joking i thought it was an original work, but only well into crying, loving, reading, laughing, did i realise when i looked better at the tags it was actually based on ROTE lol. I was new to ao3 that's my only defence :P

And what @tragediegh and Hobb are doing probably tell from my handle, is make literally my roman empire. Like I reread chapters everyday before going to sleep. It's fr fr my safe space. and what i love is the maturity in which they both write, as they create stakes in different ways. She creates a very tangible atmosphere, a world you can touch, the foods cooked, how they smell, and what the character's rely on. From banquet halls, to the wood carvings the Fool leaves behind, the well lit fireplaces, mugs of ale and coffee on the table, through jewels adorned, to how the dragons gleaming like jewels in the sky… it's simply amazing. You get me. There is NEVER a moment where you feel like it's a slog or dull moment. Like I did sometimes while reading the Stormlight Archive or Outlander (those books in their defence, are longer individually).

And like I said, the thing I LOVE the most with how they make us and fall in love with Fool (one of the protagonists) through the eyes of naive and a socially sometimes challenged Fitz. Fitz himself, is the most passionate, handsome, humble hero i've ever read. He is a bastard prince who from day 0 was neglected, abused, unwanted, un-named, manipulated, gaslit just all around most traumatised character one could read. Which most people end up overlooking and resenting bc he is riddled with insecurities (despite him being a hotttie hot chiseled smokie pie that everyone wants to cuffff) and developed unhealthy copying mechanisms that can effect the readability of the main series. Which is entirely relatable. I strongly believe the hero of Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson that everybody loves, is heavily inspired by Fitz in ROTE. In fact I think Brandon said it was one of his fav series.

But really, the masterpiece of this world is obviously the Fool. When I look at the other characters, its a bit like watching a glorious puppet show - I can see how the strings are moving and what the puppets are made of…But not so with the Fool, he is an infinite mystery and creating a character like that is something I`ll never be able to get out of my head. he is other worldly. Put Tolkien fae and beautiful faeries to shame with his grace, elegance, mysticism. His story with Fitz (the other main character) with that @tragediegh and Hobb are doing imo is one of the greatest love stories of all time.

Gender Identity

And I think also, Fool (also known as Beloved to a special someone 😉) is a lgbtq+ individual, and their identity and how they chose to present and address themselves daily (and not address it!) plays a massive role in the ROTE/OCACD overall. It extremely realistic, how it's writen, where for the most part some characters are confused, don't know how to navigate the topic. Which isn't helped by how private and mysterious the Fool remains. But for the most part, is heart warming, as the gender fluidity of the Fool is openly accepted by his mate (YES MATE) with open arms as he accepts it, and it's got me CRYINGGGG as i type this fr....! These characters were created pre-2000's, which just goes to show how timeless these gender questions and acceptances really are i think!

Conclusion

So yeah, I cannot recommend enough this ongoing story and series to you.

TLDR: Fitzloved is a ship i read myself to sleep every night and cry about how amazing they are XD

Sophie is Fitz's "lacy"

Think about it! As of late in the series Shannon brings to jarring light, in the cognate inquisition scene, the jealousy Fitz has of Sophie and how Fitz puts her on a pedestal. So, all at the same time, he views her as perfect, is jealous of her capabilities and has feelings for her. I can't help but hear that phenomenon when I listen to Lacy. The lyrics in Lacy are also just so juicy and fun to analyze.

Full lyrical analysis below the cut (it's a lot, but I love doing this sort of thing)

Lacy, oh lacy, skin like puff pastry.

Aren’t you the sweetest thing on this side of hell?

Dear angel lacy, eyes wide as Daisy’s,

Did I ever tell you that I’m not doing well?

(this is the longest paragraph, I promise)

The first lyrics here set up the whole song by characterizing the subject of the song. The emphasis on calling lacy “sweet” and an angel is the narrator criticizing this person for the fact that they can never seem to be wrong, and that they just seem like an angel who always has the best intentions. Of course, these lyrics are also just literally calling the person sweet and caring in nature (most of this song has lyrics that have double meanings, which is why this song fits Fitz’s feelings about Sophie as of the latest book so well imo). Sophie is a pretty sweet girl, but most importantly she calls all the shots and doesn’t get as much flack for what she does, whether it be a good call or not. For example, Sophie was BARELY held accountable for when she let Alvar go in Legacy (not hating on our favorite Sophie, but that was a horrible choice). In Marella’s short story, Marella is faced with a hard choice and so she thinks of what Sophie would do in her place. For Fitz, it seems to him that Sophie can just do whatever she wants and not get any criticism for what she does. Where HE wants to be perfect and always do what is right, he seems to only do what is wrong, and compared to how Sophie can only seem to do what is right it is probably frustrating for Fitz. Of course, none of this is Sophie’s fault. Fitz needs to learn find peace in himself and not to make Sophie something other than mortal (I would say human but they’re not actually human are they?). Fitz cannot do this at the moment, however, because he’s “not doing well” as is said by the song. He still never fully has gotten to process his feelings about Alvar, as for the ENTIRETY of Flashback he literally had to bottle all his emotions or he would die. That’s lowkey traumatizing.

Fitz is just not doing his best, simply put.

Ooh, I care, I care, I care.

Like perfume that you wear, I linger all the time,

Watching, hidden in plain sight.

The emphasis on “I care” reveals that the narrator is pained by the degree to which they care. They don’t want to care as much as they do, but still they’re always watching and needing to know more about the “lacy” that they loathe. Fitz doesn’t want to let his jealousy affect his friendship and his feelings for Sophie as much as they do.

Ooh, I try, I try I try,

But it takes over my life, I see you everywhere,

the sweetest torture one could bear.

Fitz really does try. He’s always saying he’s working on himself, and he does. Yet, the progress isn’t instantaneous, and the rate at which Sophie’s success conflicts with his own is greater than the rate at which Fitz tries to manage his feelings. Fitz’s entire life is supposed to be about being the greatest and the most “perfect” elf there is, but when Sophie comes in and starts to fill in all those standards, it can’t help but conflict with Fitz’s pursuits in an ugly way. So the lyrics "it takes over my life" and "I see you everywhere" are pretty fitting.

Yet, Fitz wants her. He wants to spend his life with her. Fitz admires her and can’t help but develop feelings for this pretty girl who was a breath of fresh air from his life of perfection (though distorted by the warped view elves have of romance because of the matchmaking system). So, torture though it is for Fitz to watch Sophie take his place as the greatest, it is sweetened by the fact that he’s watching someone he admires (matching the lyrics "the sweetest torture one could bear).

Smart, sexy lacy, I’m loosin’ it lately

I feel your compliments like

bullets on skin

Coming from someone above you, compliments can feel untrue, and when you’re jealous of that person who is above you, those compliments can just feel painful.

Before Legacy, Fitz and Sophie were on the same page, and their relationship with each other was great, too great. Fitz also seemed be more useful in past books in the series, but as of late he hasn’t been very useful (as Rayni joked about in the beginning of Stellarlune. It was funny but also I felt bad for Fitz).

Sophie starts to ghost Fitz during Legacy. Then when Fitz tries to find Alvar by searching through Cassius’s mind (bold, Fitz), Fitz finds out Cassius was playing him the whole time! Cassius was never really going to tell Fitz where Alvar was, but Cassius had no problem letting Sophie know. Sophie was just better than Fitz in that she could search Cassius’s mind and that she found Alvar. In a single day, Sophie did both of Fitz’s projects for him. Then Sophie reveals in book 10 that actually she has feelings for Keefe, so even romantically he isn’t good enough. Ouch. As of late, Fitz is loosing control of his perfect facade and of his ability to control his life, and so in turn he spirals inside and looses control of all the little things he used to be able to control about himself.

Dazzling, starlet, Bardot reincarnate,

Well aren’t you the greatest thing to ever exist?

While Sophie isn’t aspiring to be an actor, she is aspiring to be a “star” in the sense that she’s the symbol of change and she’s aspiring to be something great (referring to the lyric “starlet”). From the moment she entered the lost cities, Fitz's pride in life, everything he was made to be and told he had to become, starts to be fulfilled by this talented girl named Sophie. She begins to overshadow Fitz in a lot of ways during the series, like how she ends up in the nobility (Fitz's dream job) or ends up finding Alvar (something Fitz has been trying to do for months and months). So the judge-y tone in which Olivia sings “well aren’t you the greatest thing to ever exist?” are a pretty great way to represent the contempt Fitz likely seems to feel.

Ooh, I care, I care, I care

Like ribbons in your hair, my stomach's all in knots

You got the one thing that I want

The simile of “like ribbons in your hair, my stomach’s all in knots” describes a feeling emotional turbulence. Which, in relation to Fitz, is fitting since he likely feels strongly about his current relationship with Sophie. The beginning scene of Unlocked actually details it. When Keefe could feel Fitz’s emotions, Keefe said he felt, “Sadness. Nervousness. Regret. Loneliness. Plus a hefty dash of anger” (idk what page number). He really does like Sophie, their friendship is priceless.

The lyrics “you got the one thing that I want” have a double meaning. On one hand, Sophie is the one he wants. She stole his heart (and now she broke it, oops). On the other hand, she has leadership, a position of power that makes Fitz secretly so jealous. All these conflicting feelings surely turn his stomach up in knots.

Ooh, I try, I try, I try

Try to rationalize, people are people

But it's like you're made of angel dust

These lyrics convey that the author struggles to view this person as a normal human being because they’ve idolized this person in their mind.

What is also frustrating is trying to be rational about someone when you’ve idolized them. In the cognate inquisition it was revealed that Fitz viewed Sophie as this strong, fearless and perfect leader. Now that it's become a problem, he has to try to see her as a normal elf, full of flaws (just like everyone), but it's hard for him to let go of the expectation of perfection he’s lived under his whole life.

I’ve often wondered if that’s why he views Sophie the way he does. Maybe he’s just been projecting his own need to be perfect onto her, and has been falling for the Sophie in his mind that would please his Vacker family instead of the real Sophie.

Oh, oh, oh

This doesn’t have to do with the lyrics above (it's just “oh” so not much to go off of), but the way Olivia sings this whole song is whispery and angelic, but strained, almost as if she’s fighting herself. She’s singing a song about an ugly flaw in a beautiful way, painfully unearthing the jealous side of admiring someone on top of condemning them for being seemingly perfect. Fitz himself is this image of perfection. He’s the epitome of elven culture. He’s a beautiful, ethereal elf, who has the most perfect life and does everything right. Yet, his flaws are such a stark contrast in comparison. The way Shannon has written him has a heavy emphasis on his struggle to work on his flaws. His whole character sort of symbolizes the elven world, in that it's so pretty and perfect on the outside but broken and hiding horrors inside. As the elven world crumbles throughout the series, so does he.

An angelic song about one’s own flaws is very fitting for him, I'd say.

it's like you’re out to get me.

You poison every little thing that I do.

This last, whispered bit of the song reveals the true loathing. For every lyric before the this point, any feelings of true loathing were braided into comments of adoration. Here, however, it is confessed that the author is scared of the way this “lacy” threatens them. This “lacy” really effects them, she poisons the authors life. The speaker feels targeted by lacy’s success, like it's a personal attack, and to the author it is personal. This “lacy” makes the author feel smaller in comparison. It's a deeper, hidden self loathing. The author is jealous of lacy’s perfection because the author loathes themselves for not being perfect like lacy is. So everything the author does seems to be disgustingly unworthy compared to what lacy does.

This is how Fitz feels about Sophie in a sense. Maybe not as strongly, but certainly Fitz’s subconscious desire and pressure to be perfect generates feelings inside him that parallel what Olivia Rodrigo describes here.

Sophie is Fitz’s “lacy”.

Lacy, oh lacy,

I just loathe you lately,

And i despise my jealous eyes and how hard they fell for you.

Yeah, I despise my rotten mind and how much it worships you.

Fitz never used to feel this way about Sophie, at least not to the degree that he feels now. As things have shaken out, he’s been loathing her.

This is something that likely frustrates him, because he likes Sophie. She’s his best friend besides Keefe (debatable). Nobody wants to be obsessively jealous over someone they love. Yet, this obsession with Sophie, the reasons that he is jealous of her, are also why he started to fall in love with her, and pretty hard. This is why the lyric “I despise my jealous eyes and how hard they fell for you” goes so hard (excuse my un-academic language). His mind is poisoned by the need for perfection that growing up as basically elven royalty, as a Vacker, conditioned him to. He has a spoiled mindset, he’s used to getting what he wants, and for things to go his way (relating to the lyrics "my rotten mind”). Maybe he just wants to get Sophie out of his head, maybe he just wants to stop feeling for her the way he does.

Maybe he just wants Sophie to stop being the thorn in his heart that she has likely, unfortunately, become because of his "rotten mind".

Once again, in no order in particular, we have:

1. Tarantula by This Mortal Coil (1986)

This is my favourite verse from that song! Dark, poetic, and almost ethereal folk track. The synthesised choir sections send shivers down my spine every time I listen to it.

2. Princes Of The Universe by Queen (1986)

Queen is awesome and so is this song! 😍🥰 I love love love LOVE it so much, and it’s one of the band’s most underrated in their entire discography. It’s triumphant, it’s powerful, and it’s epic! I’m planning on using this song for a future F1 edit someday… 👀

Honourable mention: The Show Must Go On (1991). Another triumphant song about never giving up through all the challenges we face.

3. Flares by The Script (2014)

I feel this song is hugely overlooked. It’s such an emotionally driven track that makes me cry a little while listening to the lyrics. What ever happened to The Script, honestly? They’ve made such lovely, poetic and powerful songs throughout their career. No one seems to talk about them anymore. 😢

4. Out Of My League by Fitz and the Tantrums (2013)

You can blame Heartstopper for this one! 🥰😘

A lot of the songs that feature in that show are so fun and fluffy and just plain adorable, and they all fit the vibes so well. It’s just a nice, happy little song, that’s it! ☺️

5. Muscle Museum by Muse (1999)

I like how minimalistic this song is, if that makes any ounce of sense. This, along with many other tracks on the Showbiz album, shows the band in their “beginners” stage. This is their debut album after all, and they likely hadn’t quite figured out a particular style to go for. Don’t get me wrong, I love pretty much all of Muse’s music, especially the loud and chaotic ones. But this particular song has been stuck in my head all day and I can’t get it out of my head. So yeah, that’s my excuse! 😂

Daisy Johnson/Daniel Sousa - Invisible String by Taylor Swift

so i said i would write an essay on this. So I will.

minor mentions of PTSD, therapy and the traumas they've both been through

A huge theme for Daisy and Daniel is time. Obviously.

"time, curious time. gave me no compass, gave me no signs."

neither of them expected each other. For Daisy, this was just another mission, where everything was on the line. For Daniel, it was literally just another day at the office. Until he opened that office door.

"were there clues I didn't see?"

It has been said that their relationship was rushed in that last season of AoS and it was, due to the fact it was a short last season of the show where there was everyone's plot points to wrap up. BUT, I could wax lyrical about little things that you can pick up in both of their character developments through the respective shows (AoS for Daisy, Agent Carter for Daniel), that make them ideal for each other. Both bullheaded, quick witted, willing to do whatever it takes for the good of other people. The way they compliment each other's personalities. Sousa's measured calm to Daisy raging storm.

"time, mystical time. Cutting me open, then healing me fine."

this applies to them both, but I mainly think about it from Daisy's perspective. Throughout the show she goes through huge trauma, huge things that, through lack of time to process or just huge attempts to internalise it she moves on from. Her whole childhood. Trip giving his life to try and save hers. Her mother almost killing her. Lincoln's death. Coulson's dying and coming back in various forms. Fitz forcibly removing her inhibitor. Fitz dying. May dying. Although she's not healed completely, time forced her to move on. I feel like she's the kind of person to say she was 'fine' when she is indeed, not.

"A string that pulled me, out of all the wrong arms."

Whether there was something, fate or subconscious, that moved Daisy away from the darker paths she could have gone down. Something cosmic that would lead her to something even better. To a life with him.

"Something wrapped all my past mistake in barbed wire"

Theres a deep debate in my heart about the way the rest of the team treat Daisy over the seasons. Don't get me wrong, I love them all dearly but I think a lot of pressure is placed on her shoulders. Knowing someone as well as the team know each other, leads to past mistakes being brought up even years later. Think Fitz (I love him don't come for me) saying "do you want me to list all the times you did [turn her back on the team]". I think Sousa, our protective boy, would provide a relief from this, a comfort that she was more than the mistakes she'd made, how she'd proven herself time and time again. Maybe it's due to the fact that he hadn't been present then, the fact he solely knew the person she was now and not how she'd got there.

"Chains around my demons, wool to brave the seasons"

All I can think is Ghost Rider here sorry.

But I'd also like to think that they both force each other to confront things, I like to think Daisy suggests going to one of the Shield therapists Mack hired would be good for Sousa as he is thrown into the 21st Century as well as the PTSD he likely has from his injury and the war. I also think he would suggest it as a good option for her, after a few sessions of his own, and they's have therapy and then go on lunch dates. Dealing with the demons, together.

"One single thread of gold tied me to you"

NEED I SAY MORE - THEIR LOVE IS GOLDEN. sorry.

"Cold was the steel of my axe to grind."

To me, this is Daniel and their first meeting. The frame of mind he was in when he found that fake CIA agent sat at his desk, after the emotional ringer he'd been put through thinking Peggy had arrived and then finding out it was a imposter. The anger and emotional rawness he was feeling. That (after some initial defensiveness) was healed by this fun to be around superhero that says what she means.

"Gold was the color of the leaves, When I showed you around Centennial Park"

This is off topic for this piece, but imagine, the pair of them taking a walk around the town close to the Lighthouse when the mission debrief was over. The pair of them chatting, Daniel enraptured when Daisy throws her head back in a laugh as they walk through the park, leaves crunching beneath their feet. And it just feels so normal.

"Hell was the journey, but it brought me heaven."

I have nothing to say, both of them went through hell and back,

"Time, wondrous time. Gave me the blues and then purple pink skies"

Time brought her to him. Time hopping kept them connected. TIme loops bringing them closer, at least for Daisy.

"isn't it just so pretty to think, all along there was some invisible string tying you to me?"

I like to think of Daisy, on a early morning watching a sleeping Daniel in the light of a beautiful sunrise, looking back on her life, wondering if everything she's gone through, although awful, meant that it lead her to this life with him. This unequivocal support, this life outside of shield that she never thought she'd have.

If you had to assign a theme song to each of your characters, what songs would they be and why? We think about this a lot with our OCs, and we believe personally that Ace's theme might be Crazy = Genius by P!ATD. But that might just be bcuz we fangoy over that band!

On a side note, we'd like to know what bands you enjoy listening to? And which genres?

hihi! oc questions make me very happy and are always welcome <3 just for fair warning, I’m a little bad at assigning songs to characters but. I’ll try! I don’t really have a definitive single theme song(tm) for some characters so these are tentatively unofficial haha, but just for fun!

sol- mulled over different ones but the one that kept sticking out is ‘Hope for the Future’ by Bastille. very in line with their character themes and the kind of person they are.

lyra- this one was the hardest surprisingly. but ‘Passing Through’ by Kaden MacKay feels right. both the calm vibe of the song feels fitting as well as themes of making the most of their time and being with the people they love. kinda taking time to slow down in the moment of life being fast.

niko- think I’ve mentioned this one before, but I like ‘Get Used To It’ by Ricky Montgomery a lot for him. a lot of her backstory’s about trying to make things better than they were, both for themself and for others. so this one feels right.

june- the only one that wasn’t hard at all. ‘The Villain I Appear To Be’ by Connor Spiotto/Molly Pease. the most junecore song to ever song

hazel- ‘Synesthesia’ by Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness for them. song gives me autumnal vibes for a reason I can’t describe, and the calm feel and the lyrics fit them and how much they love their partner Robyn and would do anything for them. <3

regan- haven’t shown them off here yet (soon), but to those who do know them :> ‘The Ruse & The Caper’ by Coyote Theory. they’re very close with their partner Ozu- they have a really strong connection with each other, and love each other for who they are. this song is very rezu to me

as for ace- it is hard for me to assign One song to them bc they are such a complex chara along with the fact that I struggle at assigning songs anyways so I’ll try for a few (mostly based on lyrics). - ‘Kaibutsu’ (eng version) from Beastars! (linking this one bc there’s a few diff versions! I did a redraw of this album art with them actually :>)

- ‘Warmth’ by Bastille. this song is very ‘finding comfort in the people you love when the world around you is so overwhelming’ and that strikes me as the kind of person that ace would want to be for others.

- ‘Humpty Dumpty’ by AJR. fits with their struggling with hiding their problems from others because they don’t really have a good support system, and don’t want to burden or worry that others already have enough going on. they do end up confiding in the player- I think the player’s one of the people who they trust and care about the most.

- if I had to pick a P!ATD song for ace, I’d probably pick ‘Dying in LA’ myself. it feels very ‘ace while they’re in team meteor’ to me, where their desperation and loneliness gets taken advantage of and they’re recruited into this Unhealthy Bad situation that they clearly don’t agree with- but hey, it’s better than being alone like they were before, right?

as for me, my favorite band is bastille! as you might’ve been able to tell already, haha. although I’m also fond of AJR, fitz & the tantrums, coyote theory, ricky montgomery, imagine dragons, and p!atd :> in no order! as for genre, it’s hard to describe what single genre(s) I love since it tends to depend but I like stuff that Feels right to me. a lot of once off songs from someone I’ve never heard of just catch my attention immediately- sometimes that’s something meaningful and chill, other times higher energy, fun to sing along to. that kinda stuff!

1: For a Pessimist, I’m Pretty Optimistic - Paramore

This song is about Keefe’s tendency to run from his problems.

Who is the speaker? Possibly Sophie, or Fitz, or Elwin, or Dex. It really doesn’t matter, because it’s all the same.

The point is that Keefe never was going to stay. All through Neverseen when Sophie has to try to convince him to take a moment and make a plan, and then in Unlocked when they’re trying everything to “fix” him and nothing works...

“You never wanted to stay / I put my faith in you, so much faith / And then you just threw it away” — after dedicating so much attention to him, he still runs, because there wasn’t an option he could see where he doesn’t leave. He’s putting them in danger by staying, so he won’t.

“Just talk yourself up and tear yourself down” — That’s Keefe in a nutshell.

2: doomsday - Lizzie McAlpine

This song is about Keefe’s lack of control in his own legacy.

He wants to be able to take control. He travels to Loamnore in Legacy because he thinks he can escape Gisela’s plan for him, but she’s ready. His new ability is unlocked no matter what he wants.

“I don’t get a choice in the matter / Why would I? It's only the death of me” — his coma and his ability are out of his control. The betrayals, the experiments, his entire life, it’s already planned for him. He doesn’t get a say.

3: Guiltless - dodie

This song is about Gisela’s attitude toward Keefe, and how she expects him to react.

“You opened a door that a kid shouldn't walk through” — literally Nightfall. She uses his blood to open the door and create her beasts, literally molded him into something she could use. “Ooh, don't say it's genetic“ — Come on.

“Is it real? You believe you're guiltless / Oh, I can tell you believe you're guiltless” — Gisela consistently points out that it’s all for his own good, that he’ll understand later, that he should be thanking him.

4: Metabolism - The Strokes

This song is about Keefe’s reach for perfection and the Vackers, while he knows he can never reach it.

“I wanna be outrageous / But inside, I know I'm plain” — He wants so badly to stand out, to get attention and acclaim like Fitz and Alvar, his old hero. But he knows that he’s tarnished, even before Gisela is revealed. He uses comedy and pranks to make his name known, because he thinks there’s nothing worth knowing about who he really is.

“I wanna be somebody / Wanna be somebody like you” — Similar ideas. He wants to be anyone but himself.

5: midnight love - girl in red

This song is about Keefe not wanting to be the last resort for Sophie, even though he can’t say no to being around her.

“I know I'm the last one / You try to call but / I always give in / To give you it all” — After Sophie fights with Fitz, she turns to Keefe. He’s not the boyfriend, not the first option, not really with her, but he’s there for comfort. And he can never turn her away.

“I can't be your second best / Close but not your favorite / I keep going back for more / Where there's nothing from before” — He wants to “let them be happy” like Alden urges. But he can’t say goodbye to her, even when he feels like a consolation prize.

6: Burned Out - dodie

This song is about Keefe not being truly known by anyone, and his cries for help being ignored as just another joke.

“’But they love you’ / Over and over, ‘They love you’” — He’s famous and wanted at school, known for his pranks and his jokes and his looks. But they don’t really see him for what he is.

“Cry for help, I am not joking / I might just leave soon” — All his tears and breaks aren’t taken seriously until they happen, with Sophie being the only one who truly notices and helps the first time in Neverseen. He covers up any breaks with joking, but the result is a “Boy Who Cried Wolf” where no one can tell when he’s actually being serious.

7: Wake Up - Meet Me @ The Altar

This song is about Keefe knowing he’s broken and trying so hard to heal, but it’s near-impossible.

There’s a whole verse dedicated to needing to wake up and fix all that they’ve messed up, knowing they’ve made so many mistakes. Keefe knows he’s broken everyone’s trust in him time and time again, he knows he wouldn’t have had a new ability if he’d stayed away from Loamnore.

“I know I need to figure this out / It's all on me now” — he also blames himself alone for these problems, and tries to fix them all on his own by running away, not waiting for Sophie or the Black Swan or common sense to catch up.

8: it’s my turn - MisterWives

This song is about Keefe’s urge to just snap and run away, as well as his distaste for consequences.

“Watch as I'm running away / Just let me go / I'm not gonna stay” — probably doesn’t need an explanation

“I'm sick of saying sorry / I'm sick of always having to explain / Couldn't breathe underneath all the pressure” — Keefe loves saying things like “Just trust that I know what I’m doing.” when there is so much proof that this is not true. He doesn’t like being held accountable and he also doesn’t like always being shamed for things he definitely did.

9: Control - Halsey

This song is about Keefe scaring everyone with his new powers and not knowing how to handle it.

“And all the kids cried out, ‘Please stop, you're scaring me’ / I can't help this awful energy / God damn right, you should be scared of me / Who is in control?” — His ability is something new and dangerous, since he can’t control it. He scares his friends, even the ones who have accepted him for the disaster he is. Can Gisela control him? She implanted the tracker in his heart, after all.

“I'm bigger than my body / I'm colder than this home / I'm meaner than my demons / I'm bigger than these bones” — he doesn’t know himself anymore. He seems like something new and far too powerful.

10: Rue - girl in red

This song is about how Keefe tried to change himself, tried to fix himself, but it all failed.

“All the crazy shit I made you do / The long nights you held me through” — the treehouse sleepovers with Sophie, all of Elwin and Dex’s contraptions and solutions, which he feels like he forced them to do. They stayed with him and he just ended up causing them more distress when none of it worked and he was still broken.

“Yeah, I tried / To get it off my mind / To leave it all behind” — Keefe’s attempts to diagnose himself, to discover why he hadn’t found out about Gisela earlier, the sticky notes on the walls, no sleep, and eventually running away when it was all too much. He tried. It just didn’t work.

In conclusion,

and because of jensi being talentless stina always teams up with him for chicken fights so he doesn’t feel left out but he’s also weirdly good at it so she won’t admit it because she feels bad for him and says it’s because he’s good at it

this group is so chaotic btw

Lance's Playlist (as told by me)

Like my Keith "playlist", I've see a lot of same-y character playlists for VLD characters on Spotify, so I took it matters into my own hands.

Disclaimer: I know next to nothing about music, this is based off purely vibes and that one edible I took

Firstly, I wanna say that Lance differently listens to a wide range of music. His family definitely has influenced what he listens to, as well as his friends. But he also finds a lot of more current, popular music himself, as he tries to form his own, unique taste in music.

Secondly, this songs seem really random when you put them all together, but I swear it works.

So with that said:

1. I Wanna Dance with Somebody by Whitney Houston

This is Lance's go-to karaoke song. He knows every word since birth and when he sings it, he sings it with his entire body.

2. Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy by Queen

He's "Lover-Boy Lance" and he knows it. And idk I just feel like he likes Queen. Probably has Queen t-shirts and posters and shit too.

3. STAR WALKIN' by Lil Nas X

I think most of the songs are pretty in line with who I am and my music taste honestly

Brutus by The Buttress: This song is so good and its message is so clearly captured throughout the lyrics. Very much more of a lyrical piece as opposed to music or style but those are beautiful as well.

The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie by Colter Wall: It's been on my playlist for a while. It's a good song and although I probably wouldn't listen to it all the time, it's a great song and the beat of the guitar and everything is wonderful.

Canyonland by Kaia Kater: I love this song so much. It has such a nice vibe to it and I found it a while ago so it's kind of been on my playlist forever.

Oh Ms Believer by Twenty One Pilots: Once again, has been on my playlist forever. Reminds me of reading fanfictions from fandoms I was in like five years ago or so. A great song honestly and love the beat.

Humpty by Mitski: Honestly, it's not my favorite Mitski song but it's a good one and I like it.

Burn The House Down by AJR: I always forget how this one goes, but I always like it when I listen to it.

Walk This Way (feat Aerosmith) by Run--DMC, Aerosmith: I have to be honest and say I put this on a playlist for a story I was writing after I heard it on the radio, but I like it enough to keep it.

Sleeping on the Blacktop by Colter Wall: One of my favorite Colter Wall songs. It just has such a nice vibe to it and you can picture the story he's telling through it.

Out of My League by Fitz and The Tantrums: This has been here forever. It was one of my favorites back in my Roblox days and I always expect to hear, "Bangarang." at the end because of the lyric video I listened to.

Pon de Replay by Rihanna: I remember hearing this in my friend's car and needing to have it on my playlist immediately. I love it, it's such a bop.
