I was both excited and scared for the new season bc I wasn't sure what they were gonna do… And now two/three years later, I get the courage to watch it all the way through and… Yeah, some things I'm Upset about (listen to me Yuri is FINE, he's FINE, he got therapy and retired and moved to the country in a little cottage w/ a flower garden and his goth af boyfriend and he's FINE—okay fine that's my oc shut up, point is, they're FINE), but all in all, genuinely fucking loved it. They pretty much kept up the energy and quality from s1.

The kids are gonna be okay. Like tbh, I'm not bothered by Kotetsu retiring bc it was never played as he's completely cutting ties, which these things sometimes do. They knew there'd be a riot if they acted like those two were gonna separate forever, so they didn't. Plus, they successfully created a set of new generation heroes that made me feel comfortable leaving things in their hands? Like, genuinely, the kids are gonna be goddamn okay. Bunny's got maybe a couple more seasons in him, and Nathan, Keith, and Antonio are taking good care of them anyway. And the kids are okay. Thomas and Subaru are already having the Tiger and Bunny brand of miscommunication (I'm trying to spare your feelings, but you're trying to spare mine etc. etc., but if we're in a fight we're telepathic), Pao-Lin is so excited to be a big sister, she and Lara will do great. Ivan, Karina, and Ryan have all matured and are not just competent heroes, but also strong mentors for the younger ones as well. This was passing a part of the torch and it ended up working so damn well. I absolutely think that Kotetsu will always be the Team Dad of all of Stern Bild now (get me started on the implications of him being the one to start the speech when they called out Fugan and Mugan—bc he's Tiger, and in Stern Bild, if Tiger says it's okay, it's gonna be okay), that he's a symbol of endurance and hope and just The Heart, but it's gonna be okay if he can't be in the field. He's gonna be okay, and the next gen has got it covered. Bunny can finish his run, and then they can retire to the suburbs to be closer to the family, and check in periodically.

It'll be okay. The kids are okay. Everyone is okay.

Especially Yuri, who is FINE.

Wordplay in Xie Wanqing's fate poem

One of the things that confused me most in Love Between Fairy and Devil is why our protagonists insist that Xiao Run has to be the destined lover and murderer of Xie Wanqing, when the English subtitles only say she has to die at the hands of her "beloved," which could be Dongfang Qingcang, right??? Easy! Why do they lose all hope when Xiao Run doesn't follow their plans?

The TL;DR is that there's a bit of ambiguity in Xie Wanqing's fate poem, and xiao-Lanhua and co. interpreted it a little too literally, while the Netflix subs gave us the more abstract meaning.

Here is the crucial line, according to Netflix subs:

Then she meets her beloved who understands her well

In Chinese, it is

偏逢萧郎解语人 pian feng xiao lang jieyu ren

In particular, the two characters 萧郎 or Xiao-lang, superficially mean "a man whose surname is Xiao," the same Xiao character as in Xiao Run. This line could conceivably mean, "Then she meets Mr. Xiao, who understands her well," which is how xiao-Lanhua and friends interpreted it.

However, if you search for Xie Wanqing's fate poem on the web, you'll find lots of posts in Chinese explaining that 萧郎/Xiao-lang is actually a poetic way to indicate a woman's beloved. It has origins in multiple historical figures surnamed Xiao, but the definitive usage is in a poem by Tang-dynasty poet Cui Jiao, in which he laments that his lover, a maid, was purchased by another man, and alludes to himself as Xiao-lang [See https://www.gushiwen.cn/mingju_576.aspx]. Hence "Xiao-lang" became a way to refer to the person a woman loves. And as we see later in the show, the Netflix subs are actually right in interpreting "Xiao-lang" as "beloved," and not an actual person named Xiao.

To draw an English parallel, I think it's a bit as if the poem had mentioned a person named Romeo, and there just happened to be a guy named Romeo in the vicinity. I, as a viewer with a modicum of English literary education, know that "Romeo" can be a general epithet for a loverboy, but a thousands-years-old immortal with no connections to the human world might not.

That's not the end of the wordplay in the fate poem, though it is the most important. Here are some small things I found on the rest of the lines:

Nakano being portrayed as a clumsy idiot in the anime really sucks because he’s really more than that.

If anything I realized that for someone with such dumb luck, he is actually quite dexterous!

I mean, him saving Akiyama from Tanaka in a spur of the moment and then getting away quickly. Even Tanaka had to comment on how fast he was!

His entire suit encounter. He was dodging multiple shots and skilled hit men chasing him down and if that’s not badass idk what is. Sure he looked a bit clumsy as he did so, but he was doing it. And he still managed to try to keep Hirasawa safe.

His chase with Kei also shows how quick he thinks, though it’s not always right. But I think what mostly threw him off with the Kei fight was his hesitation. Tbf that would throw anyone off tho lol

And then BOTH car chases where he managed to get them where needed even with cop cars chasing or crowds of people around

His skill is literally running away but he’s too stubborn to do so completely from the fight. He keeps pushing forward and yk I love him for that.
