2024: A Re-Entry to Fandom

I guess this is a thing? (Oh shit this brackets bit was written at the end and I appear to have emotionally vomited an essay. Sorry ‘bout that.)

In late 2023 I experienced a personal tragedy and retreated to where I had always found comfort: books.

I read a series that had been recommended to me before, but I hadn’t had time to read it - The Simon Snow Trilogy by @rainbowrowell and it awoke a dormant-but-never-forgotten love of fanfiction in me.

In my teens and early 20s I wrote a lot of fan fiction on the ol’ FF net, all of it of atrocious quality I’m certain, which is why I haven’t tried to rediscover that account.

Instead I found AO3, and restarted regularly writing for fun instead of for work or study/research.

I didn’t do any summation for 2023 because I think my first fic was posted on like 10 December 2023, but AO3 tells me I wrote 4 works, all SnowBaz, at a total of 55,154 words.

In 2024, I’ve published 5 works, at a total of 94,323 words.

What truly blows me away (and honestly makes me a bit teary) is the 1013 kudos, 100 subscribers (inc 15 subscribers to just me rather than a fic!), and 222 comment threads on my works. 🥹

My opus, as it were. It originated from a fluffy cute prompt of “what if Baz and Lady Ruth were work besties?!” And I came along like “YEAH! But with trauma, exploration of love in mental illness, and alcoholism!”

I began posting it in March and it’s about 2/3 done now. But for Becky it would be both an absolute pile of horse poop, and an abandoned WIP. Instead it has a clear direction and she found motifs that I’d repeatedly used by accident in my drafts and built imagery, greater meaning, and also debated me ad nauseam on my preference for spelt over spelled.

I was a big consumer of WolfStar in my teens and was recommended Lumosinlove’s Sweater Weather and, like many before me, fell in love with the story, the original characters, and ice hockey itself (much to the surprised glee of my Canadian spouse, who for a decade has tried in vain to get me on board. Little did he know the key was obviously gays.)

This is a lil’ slice of life sick fic examining how each of the Cubs responds to getting sick.

I have a lot more unpublished drabbles about these characters and some fics that are being cocreated so stay tuned for 2025?

Preliminary, my dear Basil, SnowBaz, Rated: T, 1,494 words

A gift fic for @martsonmars as part of the Carry On Discord’s Secret Snowflake Exchange.

Among their suggestions was “Sherlock AU, but not BBC Sherlock, 19th century Sherlock” and it hooked me with the idea that Baz would absolutely fancy himself as Sherlock. I actually sketched out a plot to SnowBazify 4 of the Holmes stories, so maybe 2025 will see them unearthed.

There is one other published fic I worked on this year, but as a beta rather than a writer for @swoopswrites @rsbigbang piece Class A which was super fun to do (and got me to watch a great series - The Gentlemen on Netflix) and Swoops has a fantastic mind so I’d encourage you to to check it out.

Finally, I have always been a writer rather than an artist, but I do enjoy drawing, and the need to upgrade my iPad for work arose and so I also tried my hand at drawing again for the first time since I was 17 or so.

@thehoneybeet tagged me to say what my various drarries do to celebrate Christmas/the holidays (tysm I rlly wanted to be tagged 🥹). Read their version here.

Queen of the Weeds - Harry loves to cook and bake and he’s trying to teach Draco to cook, so he probably comes up with some kind of cooking challenge where they have to make something different every day in December. Draco hears a snippet of the Nutcracker over the tannoy in some shop or other, and he is immediately Enchanted. Harry finds a local performance of the ballet to take him to and gives him a recording of the music for Christmas. And obviously they’re furiously recording mixtapes.

If the Fates Allow - I see them hosting! Harry sews them both a new outfit for the occasion, and they invite everyone they can think of. It’s So Loud even before Teddy starts pulling crackers with Victoire. Everybody gets tipsy and they sing wizarding carols together ans half the guests stay over because they’re having such a good time that they stay too late to travel home that night.

A Forgivable Fascination - Way too busy with their research (inventing new forms of magic and doing weird sex about it) to host. They go to Ron and Hermione’s Christmas party and 🫣 they leave early. They have a codeword between them that means they’re leaving to bone, and it’s transparently obvious to all their friends that they’re doing so.

Imperio - They go on like a skiing vacation and have boozy hot chocolate and noisy sex in some chalet.

The Tune Without the Words - If they haven’t gotten back together yet, Harry keeps startling and changing into a dove when Draco accidentally on purpose keeps coming to the same Christmas parties as him.

A Bottomless Well - They’re like stupid ridiculous rich because of Draco’s invention, so they give annoyingly extravagant presents to their friends’ kids AND they get the kids all overexcited by romping with them too hard.

A Gift of True Esteem - Since they’re both Hogwarts professors, they have 2 weeks off, so for the first week, they usually go stay at the Palace of Beauxbatons and go to Madame Maxime’s Christmas party and get drunk with Hagrid and dance like fools. For the second week, they hole up back at Hogwarts for the coziest activities they can think of and probably invite Ash Greengrass to visit (and he’s soooooo smug about them getting married too). Harry also really likes ghost stories for Christmas, so he combs the library for them, and they take turns reading them aloud for each other. At some point, they visit Ron and Hermione, because Harry is doing his best not to be a stranger. They give lavish gifts to Rosie, Hugo, and young Miss Fredericka Faline Weasley.

The Joy of Bleeding - Draco feels Some Type of Way about the holidays after losing his mom. They go to the Burrow and they spend time with Andromeda and Teddy. It’s hard for them, both being orphans. They keep things low key and try to be gentle with themselves and each other.

Homing - Draco’s family doesn’t speak to him anymore, so Harry likes to do the traditions Draco misses from his childhood. They go ice skating on Christmas morning. They sing the songs Draco remembers from his childhood. Harry bravely attempts peacock pie one year. They do have a new tradition of spending Christmas Eve at Fetê.

Names For a House - They like to make a big fuss over Theodore when he comes home from Hogwarts. They plan lots of activities to do together, and they try to make sure that Theo sees lots of Victoire, since she’s at Beauxbatons and they don’t get to spend much time together during the school year. Sometimes the full moon is close to Christmas, and Draco and Theo have to take it easy. Usually when that happens, everyone gets into the same bed (including Shadowfax) and they watch movies together all day. Often a Star Wars marathon bc they all love the original trilogy.

Propinquity - They always have a big party at the Grotto! Pansy sort of took over the planning while they were in Paris, so they barely even have to lift a finger anymore. Their house is simply filled with people. All they have to do is hide the honeymoon box and make sure nobody else makes the same mistake Harry made. Sometimes Draco will play the piano (mostly Britney Spears tbh).

Moonrise - After they leave Grimmauld Place, they don’t host so much because the cottage is too small for any group much larger than the classic gang. But they’ll get everyone to come down to the Three Broomsticks, and there’s always some lovely live entertainment around the holidays. Draco exchanges Christmas cards with his friends from the Citizens Committee for the Ethical Treatment of Lycanthropes. They usually wind up at the Burrow for the day of. Harry helps Molly cook the meal, and Draco sneaks off the get high with Ginny and Fleur. Toad gets underfoot and helpfully licks up any scraps that fall on the floor. If it’s not too cold for the little ones, they go caroling in the village.

The characterization of Echo in this story is so fantastic…and the Batch are wonderfully portrayed as well. I return to pieces of this story often because it is so sweetly written. The writing is beautiful.

▪️Sing Me A Song by Tanwyn

(And all the TBB stories by Tanwyn are fantastic, but this is definitely a must read)

This story focuses on Crosshair’s bond with Echo. The end made me cry. Ugh! This will always be on my favorites list.

▪️ The Bad Batch's Guide to the Care and Maintenance of a Reg by TechsDatapad

This story focuses on Tech’s relationship with Echo. It is such a sweet story, a roller coaster of emotions. It’ll make you smile and cry. Sometimes at the same time 🥹

▪️ A Precious Sister in a Sea of Brothers Series by Optimistique

This series starts at the end of Season 1 and diverts from canon from there, but it is a very sweet AU!

▪️Introductions by Kaydear

I could read Kaydear’s writing style forever…and would highly recommend this Modern AU. It’s the first story in the series (most of them are Gen or Teen rated), and I reread them often 🥹

Are you named after anyone? After, of all things, a 15th century noblewoman (whom I always thought was a saint, but actually wasn't, I just found out!) My mom saw an amazing statue of her on a trip and loved it, and her name, so much that she named me after her.

When was the last time you cried? I teared up a little yesterday when I got my friend's wedding invitation in the mail. The last time I properly cried was... huh. I think a couple of weeks ago, watching TV. That's a fair amount of time for me to go without crying, so go me!

Do you have kids? No, and I don't want any.

Do you use sarcasm a lot? A bit less than I used to, and not a lot in general. Only when I think it will be funny, or when I need to make an underhanded comment about something that ticked me off but I can't do much about.

What sports do you play? None. I am a very inactive person, sadly. I hope I can at least start going on more walks as the season keeps warming up.

What’s the first thing you notice about people? If they seem friendly or not.

What’s your eye colour? A very, very dark brown.

Scary movies or happy endings? Happy endings all the way. I can't handle scary stuff very well at all. 🫣

Any special talents? I'm fairly good at languages (I learned them easily in school and I usually have a decent shot at figuring out what a word might mean if it's in a language that has at least some relation to the ones I know/have studied). Okay now that The Little Mermaid has surpassed $500M world wide, I’m ready for Disney to release a limited 2D animated tv sequel, titled ‘Uncharted Waters’.

And yes, i think it should be 2D. 12-15 episodes, 45-60mins each.

Each episode will detail the adventures Ariel and Eric go on traveling from place to place, learning about new people and their cultures. Along the way, the pair become even more of not only lovers, but best friends. They tell one another about their lives leading up to when they met on land. They discover just how MUCH of soulmates (platonic and romantic) they are, and how much they’re meant to be together - how they’re similar in so many ways, and their differences balance each other out.

(And ofc, they butt heads and disagree from time to time bc no one nor couple is perfect but that’s what makes their relationship and friendship so much stronger).

Then the finale of the animated show will have some sort of complicated situation down in Atlantica (I know they don’t really refer to Triton’s Kingdom as Atlantica in the movie) that only Ariel can solve, which will lead into a live action movie sequel called, you guessed it, “Return to the Sea”…. In the live action movie sequel Ariel gets to be a mermaid for like 85% of the movie, and Eric also gets turned into a merman and he can see what life is like under the sea. They each get to experience the best of both worlds (word to Hannah Montana)

And when the tv and movie sequels do amazing numbers there will be a third movie which will have Melody 🥹🥹🥹 the movie plot would somewhat similar to the animated movie sequel but no Morgana (love her down but no thanks)

Disney, pay these writers, animators, and actors what they’re owed so we can get these projects going! Animated TV series in 2025, live action movie sequel in 2028, live action trilogy in 2031!

I know I usually ask about PJO stuff here, but what are some Star Wars stuff you like and opinions you have? Maybe a specific ask, but do you have any feelings on Mara Jade and Winter Celchu? Any other less known characters you feel strongly about?

Oh my friend, this is a GREAT ask. No one ever asks me about Star Wars, and Star Wars was probably my first fandom! Because I just cannot abide the discourse, I haven't been as involved in it since the sequel trilogy came out, but I still have deep, deep affection for the galaxy far, far away. I, like everyone, have my opinions about which parts of the various universe I love and which parts I don't love as much, but my hottest take on it is that I enjoy pretty much all of it, lol.

I grew up on the Original Trilogy and Prequels, but also on the old EU (now Legends) stories. So I am THRILLED that you mentioned Mara Jade - she is one of my all-time favorite characters. Like. Ever. In any media. I know for a fact that she was a formative character in my life, and she and Luke's amazing, heartbreaking, swoon-worthy relationship continues to be one of the two OTPs that I still have. (The other, of course, being percabeth, lol.) I don't love Winter quite as much as I love Mara, probably because I have always been mildy horrified and saddened by her perfect memory - there's a line in Heir to the Empire, I think, about how she will feel the pain Alderaan's destruction perfectly, forever that really gets to me - but she is a fascinating character I have a soft spot for. As far as other characters I really love: I'm a BIG Talon Karrde fan, and love his thing with Shada, and the Rogue Squadron guys and gals will never fail to make me laugh. I re-read Starfighters of Adumar any time I need a pick-me-up. Wes Janson, you goofy charmer, you. Honestly, I love every character Timothy Zahn or Aaron Allston or Michael Stackpole ever created. 🥹

I could literally exclaim delightedly about the old EU forever though, so I'll shut up now. 😂
