"You did what?!" For a moment, Alex hoped he had misunderstood Hanra. But it couldn't be. His senses were excellent, everything had been checked recently and no malfunctions had been detected. The cyborg ran both hands over his face. Sometimes he even forgot that he wasn't human. Finally, he let out a loud sigh and reached into his jacket pocket until he found a handkerchief. "Here, take this," he said in a calmer voice as he held the handkerchief out to the other. "Is this your blood?" The cyborg shook his head slightly and pulled up a sleeve. There was a cut on his forearm, but there was no blood, just metal and lots of wires. "Just a cut. Nothing serious. I don't think any important wires were damaged." Alex moved his fingers to check, but his pinky stopped moving. "Well, maybe one of the wires is a little damaged. No big deal. You better tell me why you destroyed the lab."

Any sad della headcanons you would like to share with the class? Thank you I'm ur biggest fan
Ahaha hi!
I think Della bounces back and forth between being FULLY gung-ho about space and total shutdown about it. Like it had to be one of her OG passions, and now that she's back she can't figure out whether or not she can engage with things about it. Space is just space, she's still got her star charts on her wall and she's still got her telescope out on the back porch and family movie nights are awesome 99% of the time. Nobodys putting on, like, Gravity or something, but alien movies are still just alien movies, she still loves SciFi because it didn't look anything like that, whatever its a concept thats EVERYWHERE and she gets to the point where she's making jokes about it, and then we get to a night of "Hell Yeah Lets Watch Independence Day Kick ET's Ass Welcome to Earth KAPOW 👊💥 " and its TOTALLY FINE, whatever its just a silly movie and then they have The Shot
and its a jumpscare that she doesn't really recognize until its been a day and she still doesn't feel right and has to backtrack and see what the fuck is happening.
della duck's sleeper ptsd my beloved it's so much worse bc she still loves it so much. Also, I think she spent a lot of time up there at war with herself because it's SPACE she made it!!! She's literally looking at space from space and its freezing and lonely and she's lost but she's literally holding space rocks and looking at the sky from a different angle and she's touching solar wind it's beautiful its beautiful she's stranded but its beautiful
#We watched independence day and I out loud went Omg just like disney XD's ducktales#and my mother in law was like what did she say pause it what did you say and I couldn't bring myself to repeat it#thank you for the ask you're so nice!!!#ducktales#della duck

Ngl I love Galileo's entire concept. Does he have double the ego-mask and double the insecurities?
hope you don't mind me using this message to compile some asks ^^ (if you don't see yours im probably planning on doing something else with it) thank you so much!! first off... yeah totally LOL
gali's being totally genuine here. i don't think galileo masks their feelings at all- they're a total emotional open book in contrast to both donnie and leo, lmao. when they're being egotistical, they mean it 200%, but its also the same when they're feeling insecure...
(a bunch more galileo asks beloooow)
made me giggle LMAO
in regards to powers: i'm still unsure on exactly how to handle it, but i do like the idea of being able to create more stable portal constructs... maybe being able to teleport constructed items? maybe being able to create more sci/fantasy constructs than donnie alone can...? much to think about. parmi definitely has a combined Even More Insane portal powers, messing with both dimensions and space... (but he operates on rule of funny, lol, so a bit unpredictable) they can probably still use their normal separate abilities to some extent, but probably are still affected by each other!
i love the idea of galileo getting Very hyperfocused Very easily- gali gets their love of learning and being right, and they don't feel hungry or tired as much as either donnie or leo would, so they can get really lost in the weeds... components of a fusion remember everything that happens and would probably retain the information learned, but wouldn't for example make leo instantly knowledgable on all the complicated science stuff donnie knows, and vice versa. aka: leo and donnie both ending up with a LOT of contextless, near-useless trivia after unfusing post-wikipedia binge. the image of them fusing exclusively to combine their ability to Prove Someone Wrong On The Internet is really, really good LMAO
THANK YOU !! galileo was a fun guy to design, i'm really glad people like them. i think being galileo is actually really fun, especially in the moment... like how initially excited donnie was + how hyped leo was to make scifi stuff in mind meld..
thank y'all for the asks!! i'll be tagging this stuff as 'fusion mayhem au' in the future. (again no promises this'll be a Formal AU Thing but i thought it be helpful for people to have a tag to filter!)
#im usually terrible with answering asks and replying to comments but i am Trying To Get Better about it ha#tmnt#rottmnt#turtle asks#(many of them. plural)#fusion mayhem au#is at least the temporary tag ill go with for this- feel free to filter if ya want! ^^#long post#sorry about the janky formatting- tumblr loves fighting me on this stuff aha#fmau#fmau asks

I'm a bit too anxious to say it out of Anon (because brain scream sometimes) but I want to say that I love all of the yandere wips/ficlets you've shared that I've read so far. ... which is funny because I normally dislike toxic routes in many otome.
I ADORE these short stories. Most of the Readers I've seen you've make so far? Are not frilly silly characters who are the Dumb Naive types that the narration tends to offer for immersion. And the Yanderes? TERRIFYINGLY COMPETENT. Whether they're terrifying on main or instead are very very good at hiding in plain sight.
The readers are smart and/or clever. Strong of will and the ones who fight go down swinging. It's not made easy for any of those yanderes even when they are stronger, although the ones I've seen that "hunt" the Readers are very much playing with their 'food'. Some Readers realize the threat too late but they try to escape too. And then some others don't catch on yet to the danger but its not because they're dumb but because there's no feasible way for them to realize anything's amiss yet, whether they're Isekais MCs or native OCs.
(I especially love the Chosen set. omg the chosen set. And the Aizawa and Yamada ones too, like oh my god yes.)
Probably the most Terrifying yanderes you've written (that I've so far read) are the platonic/paternal ones. Whether they lull the Reader into their web or outright steal them away for Bad Ending Hell. Just... god. The Grandmaster Demon Mage, the Mad Scientist 'Daddy'... and now the Villainess Isekai's King and Queen.
pray for those readers. At least "Grandlearner" is safe in the knowledge that no Route they're stuck in will last. The Golden Ending would require the other Routes after all. If Villainess Isekai realizes the danger... oof. And "Eve"? Hopefully she'll gain enough muscle autonomy to escape "daddy" because imagine being resigned to hoping for a quick death given the Dark SciFi Otome Backstory Hell she's trapped in.
I'm gonna send this before I talk myself down from it but thank you for writing these.
I... I'm totally cool and definitely not crying. I want this printed on my wall?? Oh GOD I AM HAVING EMOTIONS 😭😭😭😭😭 this is amazing and thank you and I TOO have thoughts!
Cause like? Yandere? In my mind? Shouldn't be Real™. Like "more at 11" depressing, restraining order REAL. They should be the horror monster that LOVES you. The "I cracked along the fault lines and something UNHINGED bubbled up" that? Technically we all COULD be... if that part of our brains that stops us from metaphorically biting through our own fingers? Either turned OFF or never developed.
Enough unhinged 20 somethings! That's not a proper yandere! That's probably a mood swing! No... let them COOK. Let the crazy FESTER into a smile that doesn't reach the eyes and movements that are FAR too deliberate.
The fun of a yandere is that they are... INEVITABLE.
It's kinda like godzilla in a way. Or a forest fire. The odds aren't HIGH? But if you DO happen to be unlucky enough? All you can do is try to survive. As this Force Of Destruction rages around you.
But WORSE! Cause THIS one? Looooooves you!
May have POWER. A willingness to plan. To wait. To commit violence. And the power of the fanatic to drive them. Because, after all, they fight for True Love. For your FUTURE together. For the God of their delusions.
Aaaaah! There are so many types? I got really tired of them all going for the same template of a person? There are many ways to set off a bomb, after all! I am probably rambling and contradicting myself. I just have SO MANY THOOOOOUGHTS. Seriously, this is the nicest comment I've ever gotten? Just?

SciFi Valley Con, what a weekend!
I need to share this somewhere because it was all so amazing, I'm still a bit dazed .
First, behold this set up, because holy shit was it a lot of work!
So, on to the details. Back in Charlotte, I'd promised both DJ and Ruth tote bags with my Garth & Rowena art, respectively (they'd seen other people carrying them around but I'd sold out before they stopped by looking for one.) Didn't know if they'd actually remember BUT Friday at SFVC was fairly slow so I went to get my autographs and hunt them down. First I went up to DJ who, as soon as he saw the tote bag, came rushing out from behind his table to give me a big hug. "I don't care if it's egotistical I'm carrying this around all weekend!" All Friday he had it out on his table, too, so that it ended up in one of the con's promo videos on Instagram.
Next up was Rick...who was just a doll, taking his time with each and every person! I was just going to get an autograph for myself but as soon as I showed him the painting he was just literally speechless for a while, came around to give me a hug, asked his handler to take that picture he posted on Instagram, I gave him a print and we chatted a bit but I felt bad taking up too much time. (I did go back on Sunday to get an autograph for Mr. Hawkland's office and totally cracked him up with my/our usual request for something mentioning feet, since the hubster is a podiatrist.)
Then I saw Ruth briefly had no line so I dashed over and handed her her bag and she was immediately all "Oh! Oh! Emily, come over here!" (Emily Swallow was signing the next station over.) "This is the artist who has that lovely painting of the two of us I was showing you!"
I'm now like....wait a minute...they're showing each other MY ART?!?!?! I knew Ruth liked the piece — it was the one I did for the femmeslash bang claimed by @father-salmon — Emily immediately slips out from her table where she had a long line and was like, "Hi I'm Emily" to shake my hand and I'm like OMFG I KNOW YOU ARE and they were just both being so sweet I could've cried. Ruth was asking if it would be ok if they made copies of that piece available for signing (like, absolutely?!?! I'M the one skirting the edge selling these prints...) Anyway, Ruth let me pick out a picture to get signed for free, I ran back to my table to get the new Amara piece I'd done signed by Emily and to print her prints of each. And she wouldn't even let me pay for getting it autographed either, just was being so kind, I mentioned how Season 11 is my favorite and how much I've come to enjoy Amara every time I rewatch and then she wouldn't let me leave without a hug. *sob* Saturday morning she even stopped by the table to look at more of my stuff up close and tell me how Ruth was carrying her bag around everywhere.
Oh and Sunday morning before we opened for the day, I'd just set up and stepped out to get something to drink, come back in and Mark Sheppard is at my table by my Crowley prints and postcards talking with his handler. He was like "Yeah I've signed a lot of these" and was surprised the big banner print hadn't sold yet (so was I). He actually remembered signing the original paintings back in Pittsburg 2-3 years ago, I do not know how he remembers these things.
Anyway. Sales were kind of meh since the crowd was only very partially an SPN crowd BUT I cannot remember having such wonderful interactions with guests/actors ever like this. It's a little freaky because it hit that the Creation con regulars (DJ, Ruth, Mark) definitely know & remember me. And I guess that's a good thing? I suppose we'll see how it all unfolds next year as this was my last con for 2024 (next year I'm planning on doing SPN Boston, New Jersey, Novi, Philly and maybe Chicago too.)

I got tagged by @gunkreads to give 3 book recs. Apparently this was supposed to be 1 sentence a book originally but who gives a shit.
1. A Memory Called Empire (Teixcalaan #1) by Arkady Martine
A Memory Called Empire is the first book in the Teixcalaan duology, a scifi space opera which focuses on the intergalactic empire of Teixcalaan, loosely based on the Aztec empire. The first book follows Mahit, a newly appointed ambassador from the independent Lsel Station, who comes to Teixcalaan's home planet after the mysterious death of the previous ambassador Yskandr. She soon finds herself caught up in the brutal yet seductive political intrigue of Teixcalaan as she investigates her predecessor's demise.
Mahit has a deadly secret-- a brain implant known as an imago which is imprinted with the memories of a younger Yskandr. Periodically he 'talks' to her and gives her advice. The imagos are a proprietary technology essential to Lsel Station's way of life-- a means to quickly train each generation to perform and survive dangerous jobs in the void of space-- and are a closely guarded state secret. But they're also a taboo concept to Teixcalaani culture, and discovery would put her and her people in danger.
This book and its sequel A Desolation Called Peace were both such a pleasant surprise to me. The prose is lovely-- elevated and intelligent without being pretentious. Frankly I love everything about these books. The characters are fascinating, and the thematic explorations of empire, identity, and sense of self are exquisite. The writing is so layered and intricate it's a joy to read. Specifically I love how Martine weaves the themes of the story directly into the characters' thoughts and actions. Like it's fucking CONSTANT but in a way that makes me chew at the walls and go crazy. The second book is probably my favorite but the first book is a great start.
You want a book where politics are performed through poetic verse? Fucking read A Memory Called Empire. Ok I love you bye
2. Jade City (The Green Bone Saga #1) by Fonda Lee
Jade City is the first book in a trilogy of what I can only describe as a fantasy/mafia/martial arts fusion series. Basically it takes place in a world similar to our own but with one main difference: jade grants people magic powers, and the China analogue Kekon is the only nation with access to and control over it. The story follows the No Peak clan, one of the Kekonese crime families with control and political influence over jade as a resource.
The whole trilogy takes place over a 50 years or so span and it's fascinating to see how the main cast changes over time alongside the country of Kekon and the world at large, and how jade as a resource influences international politics. There's a lot of intrigue throughout the series and I found it super entertaining. It also has some of the best fight scene choreography I've ever had the pleasure to read. Definitely a strong recommendation from me.
It's been a few years since I read it so I'm vague on some of the details, but that's the general gist. Sorry if I totally missed something lol
3. Annihilation (The Southern Reach #1) by Jeff VanderMeer
One of my favorite books ever- Annihilation is a short horror novel following an expedition of four women sent into a supernatural 'pristine wilderness' known as Area X. Told from the perspective of a character known simply as 'the biologist' we gradually learn about the downfall of her expedition and the bizarre happenings within Area X. While some questions are answered, many more remain by the end.
Annihilation is the first book in the Southern Reach trilogy, soon to be a quadrilogy with the surprise release of a new book Absolution this year, which I'm looking forward to. But even on its own it's a solid, creepy ecological horror story. Despite the short length, Annihilation has many layers to the narrative and plays around with unreliable narration a lot. This holds true for the series as a whole, and I HIGHLY recommend re-reading Annihilation after finishing the third book should you decide to continue the series. It's really crazy how much it sets up and foreshadows the later books while standing on its own. It's a short read but I wouldn't call it an easy read, and I mean this as a compliment.
Before you ask-- while I enjoy the movie adaptation, it is very LOOSELY based on the novel. I think the novel is much better, but outside the tone, atmosphere, and basic character setup, the book is a much different experience.
As for tagging people i think the whole mutual group has been tagged 😭 so i tag @mistressofmuses, @heywizards, and anyone who wants to do this!

Hiiiiii I have 📱, 🤔, 🖖, ❓ from your scifi themed ask game for youu °u° Thank you for making all of these as games btw, it's SO useful for worldbuilding!
thank u for the ask, and for enjoying my games!! i love making them :3
I will answer these for my Space Cruise WIP!
📱What’s the state of communication technology in your WIP? Do people communicate through their microchipped brains, or is a cell phone still the best way to get a hold of someone?
Not quite at brain chips yet, but we're past phones too! Most people carry around or wear infoscreens on their sleeves. I know it's a hologram phone/computer thing attached to a little metal stick that projects said hologram and can be clipped onto/sewn into clothes, but I have not ironed out all the details yet
When it comes to translating alien languages, there is quite an advanced technology for that. The translators that Kavi wears on both their ears are sort of like if a bluetooth earpiece was awesome. It's a little strip of metal that gets glued inside your ear (with medical grade adhesive or something idk) without blocking the hole, and can translate everything you hear in real time. It hears the words before they reach you due to soundwaves or whatever, and blasts the translation into your ears instead. It can take a little bit to get used to the fact that people's mouths aren't moving in sync with the words you're hearing, but it's a small price to pay for Understanding.
The translator can also be paired with whatever infoscreen you have, and you can mess with the settings of how specific words get translated and such
🤔What kind of technology is still being developed in your WIP? What’s something they’re still trying to figure out?
I answered this one already here! But I'm sure I can come up with more...
Laser guns aren't a thing, at least not for the average person. The only kind of laser/ray weaponry that exists is under lock-and-key in military files, and are so huge they can only be attached to spaceships or tanks. They're working on a smaller scale version of those lasers, but ONLY for military reasons. The power is too great for civilian hands etc. etc. you can totally trust the military with this power don't even worry about it
🖖Did the aliens reach out to humanity first? Why?
So humans and aliens got into contact sort of on accident?
Humans were chugging along, looking for a planet to park their spaceship on, and the aliens pulled alongside us in their spaceship and then this happened
To get another kick out of this, the aliens were in the equivalent of a BMW and the humans were in our dad's 2007 Honda Civic.
Humans were like "WOOOOO SAPIENT LIFE EXISTS WE DID IT YIPPEEEEE" and the aliens went "oh my god these little things need so much help"
❓What took humanity’s place on Earth, if anything?
There are still humans on Earth! Either the descendants of people who refused to leave when space exploration became a thing, or people who have returned to humanity's ancestral home to Find Themselves 🙏
It's not a very popular place to live, and the people who stuck around were considered either regressives or "so progressive they horseshoe theory'd themselves back to being regressive" but the people who stuck around have plenty more reasons than "we don't wanna" for staying on Earth (although those groups do exist, and hate aliens quite a bit). Money, access, power, fear of the unknown, and fear that another planet like Earth will be squandered before humanity has even finished cleaning up the first one.
[try out my sci-fi worldbuilding ask game]

miiiisssss me? :]
HEHEHE OKAY SO
apus!! who gave him that name. did binary pick it out for him as the Resident Name-Giver or did he choose it himself? if so, what's it in reference to?
what would everyones favorite books / book serieses be?? i feel like i might be projecting a little but i think binary would like pjo he gives those vibes to me hjsdhds
actually wait. how did nebula react to the 5000 dimensions collapsing, or has that not happened yet in the timeline of the fic-? i feel like he would be absolutely devastated but hey!! at least he has less dimensions to look for a moon in-?
what kind of festivals are there? there's one adjacent to christmas but i'm curious if any others holidays carried over? (eg. halloween, Eid, etc etc)
also i was rereading lltk (because God it's such a good fic) and i just realized that. eri gives off immense susie deltarune vibes sdhjdsjh i can see her just picking up kris off the floor and dragging 'em to noelles house or smth like how eri dragged nebula to the library
:D you return!!
apus is named after the constellation apus! it represents a bird of paradise and i thought itd be fitting uwu.
as for who named him, shrug! open to interpretation, but either way binary was involved.
honestly i think binarys favorite book series would be The Babysitters Club. now forgive me for i read a small variety of books BUT
apus is the one who enjoys the pjo series actually! they like the idea of being born for something big and grand. its fun
eridanus is rarely trusted with books because she keeps forgetting she can't read them safely underwater and binary almost jumped her last time. she Did read a random mid-series Warriors book and was very confused and oddly invested. totally never happened to me.
nebula actually loves childrens stories and folk tales! they make him nostalgic <3
rust likes reading horror books, with an affinity for scifi!
nebula read All Tomorrows once and it haunts his every moment post-star (he may or may not have a mild fear of turning into the Qi. he will never speak of this.)
THE DIMENSIONS im not quite sure if itll be canon to lltk if im honest! it might, but either way i Can tell you nebulas reaction.
he would absolutely be devastated over the mass destruction, he would be mourning for weeks for people he never knew and would never meet.
halloween is definitely carried over, it wasnt even a conscious decision for nebula he just mentioned it off handedly once and next thing he knew it was Surprise Halloween. someone found him laying face down in a smashed pumpkin four hours later. its not clear if he tripped and just stayed there, or actively chose to lay there. it was a very long debate over his body.
also youre right eri Does have those vibes. bully with good intentions. at least most of the time maybe. either way she probably bites.
#long live the king au#king sun | nebula#harpy lunar | apus#sun | binary#mer eclipse | eridanus#bloodmoon | rust#sun and moon show#WOO BOY THIS IS LONG#i wrote this on my phone so please forgive typos#anyway yippie content!

Listened to Ada Rook for like two hours and these are my thoughts about the songs I listened to (very random bc of spotify mobile)
Thank u for showing me ada rook @highoncatfood
Sardonica
Yo that guitar slaps
I have no idea what she's saying but I can groove to this
This is likeeee. Animated musical villain is hypnotizing a character music
Yo is breathing part of the beat? Love when music does that
Very good I'd say likeeee 7.5/10 would listen again
Curse (for Devi)
Again that's a good guitar
Oh is this like a love song
Like the whispery type thing she's got going on
Still barely know what she's saying but it's okay !!!!!
Kinda less funky than sardonica, still good though. Id say 6.5/10 because less funky but I can understand the lyrics better
Tru U
AYOOO FIRST SONG I EVER HEARD
Still so good. Can really understand what she's saying
Makes me want to junko pose /pos
The chorus has such a good beat I bop to it
Definitely like. 8.5/10 because it hurts my ears sometimes but I adore it. Fave so far !!!! Which is funny because it was the first one I heard she just knocked it out of the park immediately.
Time dilation
more lowkey…. Kinda sad sounding
I like it. different vibe from the others But it's good!!!!
I like the flute thing going on in the back. And guitar as always
Kinda sounds like something that would play during a sad party scene in a movie. But actually good
Solid 7/10
Moth
Hmmm that tune seems familiar
I swear I've heard it before… Like a synth song or smth
Also a sadder one
Like the acoustic guitar here, sounds less funky but is nice for the song
Idk it's kinda. Boring ? Tru U set me up for Screaming Battery Acid and This is not that
It's not bad though! I'd say likkeeee 5/10
Starlight Zone
Oh. Hm
The screaming has never sounded like that Before
it sounds like it hurts her voice :<
am Not grooving to this one sadly
4/10 this is not the vibe for me
Host
Omori battle music right here
Honestly the instrumental is really good
I love the way it sounds
This is making me imagine an Infinity Train AMV???? It's got that sad scifi vibe
Also like the beat of the singing
WOAHHH THATS REALLY DISTORTEDDDD
Battery Acid here we goooooo
Will definitely hurt my ears like Tru U but it's okay this is good
FUCKK THAT PIANO AFTERRRR OHHHHHHHHHH
Original rating was 6.5/10 I judged too soon. Bumping that up rn
This song makes me realize that Ada rooks voice reminds me of. Scaramouche’s English va when he sings yes I'm making this about blorbos
Solid 7.5/10
Escape
Oh I can understand her this time
I thought the drop would give More but this is a vibe
Enjoyable !!!!
The instrumental is great
6/10, good!!!
Otherworld
Beginning reminds me of porter Robinson
This is a chill vibe so far
Hmmmm. Unsure
Not very boppable
I'm gonna sayyy 5/10 it's not bad I like the instrumental
Mystery School
This sounds like a more lowkey 100 Geccs
I enjoy it… good stuff
Not much of a beat but the instrumental Is sooooo funky
Good shit !!!!
Boppin
7/10
Ur gonna live
OHHH BOPPIN
This could make a good Lemon Demon beat
Love the instrumental
Kinda loses steam
But the guitar is good
Like the ending…. Oooo
6.5/10
Total memory failure
Another sad one but I like the “ahhh” in the instrumental
I can imagine sad amvs to this
Definitely has more of a beat
It sounds like they're tapping glasses in the instrumental that's a vibe
Ohhh that slowing of the tempo
Good stuff….
7/10
Sabotage everything
Hmmm

I read that you don't watch bible shows or write bible poetry anymore, but can i ask you if there a specific reason (apart from being an atheist, my friend is agnostic but she's interested in religion)? I mean, you used to write magnific poetry and i saw that you recently re published them on ao3. I don't mean to be rude or disrespectful or anything, if this is too personal feel free to not answer.
(It’s probably too personal, but when has that ever stopped me!)
For me, I think it boils down to:
The Christian Bible is only a truly meaningful and unique story if it is a deadly serious exercise in communicating with, reaching for, finding the limits of, and generally exploring/naming/scoping/realizing/reaffirming the divine. Don't get me wrong, I loved writing about angels, prophets, the early church, Peter and Judas, Eve and Mary! But the thing I really loved, the thing that rung like a struck bell, was that in doing so I was reaching for God, and everything that capital-G-God implies. The seriousness of it, the truth of it, was the point. If I just wanted to write about social institutions, there were better examples; if I wanted to talk about alternative dimensions where the laws of physics are different, there's plenty of room in scifi and fantasy. Writing about the Church, about Purgatory in the very Catholic sense of exploring something that could actually exist in the theological universe and what it would look like, is a totally different project than "hey it would be crazy if the lion that is also jesus talked."
I loved the Christian Bible as a way of exploring these ideas as well as something I felt, deeply---and in doing so, affirming that these feelings were a mirror, an extension of a greater ontological reality that I could only catch in glimpses, out of the corner of my eye.
Now I don't feel that! And I don't believe that particular reality exists. It doesn't make what I wrote before meaningless, but it does mean I have little interest in returning to it. What joy could I take in seriously communicating with the divine, if I don't believe there's a divine to reach for? I'd be better off divorcing myself from the rituals, the hierarchy of angels, the Aristotelian physics embedded in the Catholic universe---writing fantasy, essentially, at least I can return to these things with more distance, insight, and interest.
(To be fair, I'm still wildly susceptible to depictions of faith in literature---there's a reason that The Silt Verses is one of the only podcasts I've been able to keep up with. But that's fictional religion, separate and apart from writing, reading, and thinking about the characters of the Christian Bible with deadly seriousness.)
None of this means the Christian Bible isn't meaningful in a general sense of Western thought, literature, art, history. I still think the Psalms are beautiful, am intrigued by the stories (and recastings and retellings and musicals and---) that the Christian Bible birthed. But if I'm interested in religion as a political force, or the church as a sociopolitical institution, I don't have to sit through Passion of the Christ 2: Christ Harder to do it. At the end of the day, I don’t believe in god, so I don't feel any particular interest in returning to the spaces where that’s a valid question.
And for someone who grew up in a faith that regularly had us chant “I believe in one god, the father the almighty....” I’m not sure what place there could be reserved for me now.
#.......did I write this whole post and go ''hey maybe you're still mourning your loss of faith?''#maybe so. maybe so.#tw religion#tw christianity#it begins in a garden#also I posted that stuff on ao3 because I haven't written anything new. it's really not that deep.

i'm gonna be talking about the weird porn game stuff i'm working on now, so you know, watch out
so as you may have gathered from my various posts, i've been working on the hell game 2 engine. currently i have events running mostly-correctly from data files, but i don't currently have state & pc data hooked up correctly so i can't actually e.g., test out various different sex scene variations based on the pc's bodytype. given one of the big failures of hell game (the first) was that i never really got complex event interactions working, i should probably think up some multi-stage demo events and get them working early on, so i don't end up repeating the same mistake
anyway as i have been putting this together i've been reflecting on the stuff i was dissatisfied with with hell game. unfortunately for me one of those things was "the sex scenes weren't as parametric as i wanted". hell game tended to break sex scenes down based on fundamental body plan (what i usually call 'bodytype' b/c that's the variable name for it in the code). that was stuff like: biped, centaur, quadruped, naga, snake, and 'other'. that's already a lot of totally-different variations but given i also let people change size there did kind of also need to be at least some size-based changes. but that's even more stuff to write for a single sex scene to have full coverage.
(this kinda thing is why i love to bring up the whole thing about nagas having a thigh gap in TiTS. they didn't want to change the scene blocking for all the doggystyle sex scenes! you can just say "between your thighs" either way!! i mean i get it, just, lol.)
but the other thing with hell game is that it was always uhhh a very early demo. it was basically a collection of contextless sex scenes with demons, and while there are worse things for a game to be, i did kinda have aspirations of, you know, plot, story, named characters that weren't just procgen demons, etc. so one of the things i've been working on currently is a ~design doc~ that covers setting & story details in a concrete enough way that i can reference off it and not end up writing myself into a corner.
and that gets us to the weird porn part of the post. i haven't fully committed to the current setting concept (scifi space station sucked through an interdimensional portal so it's now orbiting around hell, a la your dooms and hellpoints and the like; i feel like i'm maybe being a little too derivative here) so i won't go into too much detail but on the whole there is probably gonna be a more pronounced, you know, horror/grotesque influence. we'll... see how that works given that it is also a porn game
like yeah yeah plenty of porn games are kind of libidinal nightmare realms. coc had the parasitic dick worms. people love gross sex stuff. i feel like i kinda lost touch with a lot of my audience and now i spend more time around, uh, normal people who don't have deeply-rooted fixations. currently the first encounter i have outlined for this is uhhh a reanimated zombie who... lemme just paste the description in
A thing that was once a dead body, overtaken by something new. Its skin is a faded grey and its muscles are overgrown, proportions inhuman: shoulders impossibly wide, arms and legs slabs of striated muscle. It moves with an inhuman gait, as if the thing inhabiting it is still getting adjusted to human articulation.
There's a squirming thing wrapped around its head, all leathery purple-black flesh. A central mass covers the corpse's head: face smooth, back of the head a mess of overlapping tentacles. It has many long octopus-like tentacles that fan out across its shoulders and back. The tentacles trail down its body, clamped tight to the skin, before they sink into its body across its shoulders, chest, and back, squirming under the skin like gigantic veins. The skin around the punctures is painted with purple-black bruises. Glowing green ichor pulses through its body, pumped into it from its penetrating tentacles, feeding its muscles with unnatural energy. Its skin is a faded grey, streaked with ash, save for where its glowing-green blood flows, forming branching lines of bulging veins that cover its shoulders and chest.
A single loose tentacle extends from its face like an enormous proboscis, tapering in wormlike rings to a squirming tip, slavering shed ichor in gummy lines down its bare chest.
Its cock hangs heavily between its thighs, perpetually bloated and half-hard, with its glowing green ichor visibly pumping through its altered flesh. Its massive, oversized balls churn and lurch behind the fat stalk of its dick, pulsing with burgeoning larvae. Thick, translucent grey pre perpetually spills from its bloated glowing-green cocktip, painting wet smears of fluid down its monstrously-muscular legs.
it talks to you and asks if you wanna get pumped full of squirming zombie larvae so it can reproduce and reanimate more corpses. a lot of the encounter design is very much "what if you could fuck this DOOM monster"
anyway, that's like, normal. that's completely usual actually. having a cop fetish is what's weird and disturbing. okay okay that's just dumb glib moralizing i don't actually think that. but i mean, it is super weird to write stuff like that and then go back into the normal realm where people keep talking about college jocks or w/e.
but before i do much more writing i gotta hammer out the rest of the engine. next up: a lot of variable storage & thinking about how to separate npc data from the events they take part in. that's all stuff that needs to get coded regardless of which setting i go with

you mentioned liking military fiction, I'm curious whether you see the emphasis on disobedience in tcw and tbb as something specific to star wars, or as something that applies to fiction in general?
I wouldn't consider myself a military fiction sort of person, but similar franchises that come to mind, (destiny, mass effect, etc) also portray orders in a military setting as being optional for the main characters, that heroes can go against the grain if they know in their hearts it's the right thing to do, and don't face consequences, because things always work out in the end. this can partially be attributed to being games instead of a non-interactive media like a show, but it seems to me like the option to disobey an order is something a main character very often has in fiction even if it's unrealistic, displaying either a misunderstanding by the writers or an attempt to make a military hero more palatable to the general public.
idk, just spitballing, something to think about if you want ig? I don't mean to throw so many words at you lmao. I love your pulls from the books, maze saying "crazy null boy" is an all-timer for me LMFAO
omg yeah absolutely, it drives me insane every time in pops up in stuff like video games and other tv shows, where the Main Hero gets to disobey a direct order, not die, and then miraculously pull of a huge save, and not face any consequences. this even bothers me in pacific rim, where raleigh has a very anakin-esque attitude and that little nerdy doctor does the stupidest thing possible and saves the whole world because of it
i guess it especially bothers me in tcw and tbb (even though, like, theyre kids shows, its fine, this is something that even adult military fiction frequently fucks up) because i really see the inhibitor chips as the writing team scrambling to reconcile fucking this up with the ending that has to happen and pulling out mind control, which is second only to time travel on the list of Total Clownshoes Scifi Tropes to me
now that i've claimed to like miltary fiction i'm struggling to think of more examples lol. Halo Kilo-5 Trilogy also did 'following orders is good actually' really well, but that's not surprising, because kt wrote that too
murderbot does pretty decently although i don't know if that counts as military fiction. murderbot has to balance appearing to follow orders with its own limited expression of free will, especially at first, and is Extremely annoyed when the dumb humans dont follow the orders it gives them for their own safety
that episode of the mandalorian where din has to deal with that fuckin newbie does it well- the kid doesn't follow orders, nearly dies multiple times, almost gets everyone around him killed, improvises at the end because he thinks he sees an opportunity, and gets his ass killed in the end for it. ten outta ten very satisfying, because in another story, that idiot would have won
andor did this pretty well, in that when cassian improvises he causes himself and everyone around him enormous problems, and luthen's entire Thing is very much about putting the collective good above heroism, but andor did literally everything well
'it seems to me like the option to disobey an order is something a main character very often has in fiction even if it's unrealistic, displaying either a misunderstanding by the writers or an attempt to make a military hero more palatable to the general public'
i think you're totally, completely spot on here. i suspect it has something to do with how western society values independence and heroism over a collective good. we love to see our hero Stick It To The System and Follow Their Heart, and then Come Out Victorious and Prove All You Boot-Licking Cogs In The Machine Wrong
hell. even repcomm DOES do this. the skirata band explicitly disobeys so so many orders, breaks out of the system, and comes out (mostly) victorious. i guess i'm fine with that because of the context and how the system they're sticking it to deserves to be escaped from, and they don't do it as an individual, but as a collective that has to be very, very careful with how and when they go about disobeying orders
i sort of laser focused in, but everything i'm saying about orders applies to improvisation, too. in hard contact specifically, omega squad plans their asses off and still has to improvise at the end, and it's actually treated as extremely dicey
and then there's the bad batch that never does any recon whatsoever and just runs blind into most situations, narrowly avoids death through sheer luck and Main Character Gumption

📚August 2024 Book Review (Part 2/4)📚
This batch is all over the place theme-wise but I faced some of my most terrible ennemies: romantasy, contemporary literature, saw-the-film-before-reading-the-book-and-now-I'm-biaised and the all or nothing Time Travel. This was eventful.
Sea of Tranquility by Emily St John Mandel
From the early 20th century in Vancouver to the 24th century on a moon colony, the same phenomenon occurs: a sudden earth shattering hallucination of violins played in an airport terminal echoing in the middle of a forest. What is it? Where does it come from? The detective Gaspery-Jacques Roberts is sent to investigate.
Did I already say that I love time travel stories? Because I love time travel stories. But I'm picky as hell, if it doesn't make sense you will lose me immediately and never get me back.
That said, this book had me hooded from the beginning (passed the wonder as to why this sci-fi novel starts in 1912) and never let go.
The pacing is relatively slow but it works out well with the eery atmosphere and the feeling of déjà vu I couldn't scraper off. And there IS an element of déjà vu, something that comes back through different times with different characters so great job bringing this so deeply in the reading experience!
It also deals with the question of pandemic too but I liked how reminiscent of Covid it was without being specifically about covid. It didn't felt forced "hot typical you need to include to be relevant". It felt lived through (which it was) but always at the level of the character rather than an bigger perspective.
The story does a great work of binding together the different timelines in one chronological order and wraps nicely at the end, it was so satisfying! If is one of my favorite SciFi read of this year.
It's Kind of a Funy Story by Ned Vizzini
Craig Gilner must succeed in life, it is the only way to be happy. He needs to get to the best high-school to get into the best college to get the best job or he will be a total failure. But once he gets into an elite high school program the pression gets to high, Craig nearly tries to kill himself. He is admitted in a mental hospital and there he will meet a cast of diverse people who aren't so different from him deep down and face his anxiety.
TW for suicide ideation and a near suicide attempt
This was a wierd reading experience for me, I picked this book because I liked the Be More Chill Musical, which I admit is a wierd reason to pick a book but here we are! I did not read anything other than the back cover before diving in. I was aware that it dealt with mental health and suicide but that was about it.
The first part was a punch in the guts, just like Craig I went through an elite program (mine was after HS) and it did not go so well. I saw a kinda uncomfortable amount of myself in Craig: the overachieving mindset, the "you can do it, so you have to" mentality, the fear of not being enough, the feeling that however loving and caring my parents could be they just couldn't understand what was going on. The loneliness even when there's a crowd around... it did not go as bad for me as it did for Craig but it was painful to remember it could have. Some quotes hits right were I was 5 years ago and I wasn't prepared for it.
Thankfully Craig gets help before it goes too far and so he ends up in the mental hospital for a few days. The characters he meets there are touching, sometimes funny. One downside note for me is the transgender character (I can't remember for sure but I think it was a trans women) referred to with the wrong pronouns - which I don't think was malicious, might be early 2000's prejudice, might be the author not knowing better but as a trans person myself, but it rubbed me the wrong way.
It was also heartbreaking to read a bit more about the author and realise that there is probably a (not so) little bit of himself in this: he also spent some time is a mental hospital, and he killed himself in more or less the way Craig almost did. That made me really emotional and I wasn't bracing for that at all.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (The Chronicles of Narnia #1) by C S Lewis
Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy are sent to the country to escape the Blitz, but there's not much too do in an old house with a severe housekeeper for the four siblings. Then one day while playing, Lucy discovers a wardrobe which opens on a fantastic land trapped in perpetual winter. The inhabitants see in the children a new hope: they will help Aslan the lion to defeat the terrible White Witch who took over Narnia.
The Chronicles of Narnia are such a classic young reader novel that I'm surprised I never read them before! Turns out now I might be a little to grown up for it but nonetheless it was nice.
The Christian parallels are more obvious than in the film but the style is nice and it adds details that make the characters' actions, especially Edmund's sounds a little more logical.
Some elements are also really nice and funny with the knowledge of Lewis' friendship with Tolkien. I wouldn't have had it as a kid so for that it's good to read them as an adult.
I will probably read it all at some point but peppered through the TBR, they are nice when you have a sick day that you need to occupy or just want to chill for an afternoon. Easy, nostalgia inducing, that's perfect.
Magie et Sentiments (Les secrets de Longdawn) by Ariel Holzl
After years of war and centuries of uncertain peace, the Earth and the Moon are set to create a new alliance. This would be symbolically marked by the marriage of Nathaniel, the son of a Moon noble family and Rebecca, the daughter of an Earth Duke. Conveniently for the England Crown, Luke, Rebecca's brother, is a spy and will accompagny the affianced couple and secretly make sure of the Moon embassadors good intentions. This is without counting on Sheva, Nathaniel's beautiful but cold sister.
The title is not really subtle, "Magic and Feelings, the secrets of [pun on a city name]" is pretty much what it says on the tin: a romantasy set in a fictional England. I was very invested in the fantasy but the romance I gotta admit, was fun. This is not my favorite read of 2024 but I was not huffing loudly every few pages so that's a win for romance novels in my book! The couples are kinda cute, the pacing isn't too slow and there is enough action to keep me entertained through the romance bits.
There is also a really cool setting in the Moon Empire, with it's own culture, laws and ritual which was nice to discover. The magic system both of Earth and on the Moon are also interesting, even though the elemental one isn't super original it works well in the setting.
The earth is an uchronia, which I love, it is always fun, set in a fantastical England whose city name have been changed (see Long Dawn -> London). Sometimes it was done in a rather elegant way, but at several times the book spells out the pun in a very artificial manner ("look ah ah, the working class have SUCH a funny accent, they say Loooon-doooon, did you see what I did there??" *author winking with both eyes through the pages*) and that threw me out of the story.
This is a late Middle Grade/early Young Adult book: I think a highschooler might be bored and it's a bit hefty for an elementary schooler but middle school kid would like it qi think. No shade to the author, I was just too old for this book but maybe that's why I could appreciate it: at the very least no explicit sex scene.

Do you have any convoluted military sifi recommendations?
Ooohhh, I really just started in on the genre kind of recently, and not all of these are military/serious. Tones will vary.
To start with a tumblr-popular series and all time fave
The Murderbot Diaries
This series is funny, not That convoluted but has a lot of world building, and includes a lot of shenanigans. Murderbot is a rogue AI/android trying its very best to not get attached to these dumb fragile humans. (Task failed successfully).
Ancillary Mercy by Ann Leckie -
one of my few 5 star series. I love everything about the characters in this book. The main character is the AI of a destroyed spacecraft that is hundreds (thousands?) of years old. She used to be part of a hivemind made of overridden human corpses but is the only remaining part of the whole. And she's out for revenge.
Winter's Orbit and Ocean's Echo by Everina Maxwell
In all honesty, these are both really romance novels set in a space-opera/military backdrop. I think I liked Ocean's Echo more than Winter's Orbit but I'm a sucker for soul-bonding tropes. These are both m/m romance books set in the same universe but each is a standalone book, and you can read them in any order. I did them backwards and it didn't make much of a difference. Winter's Orbit has a murder mystery/conspiracy plot and Ocean's Echo focuses more on the military system.
Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
Is it fantasy? Is it scifi? Is it horror? YES. The Locked Tomb series starts out as a science/magic system oriented And Then There Were None murder mystery set all in one house, but the universe is sprawling and covers much more than that. The sequel, Harrow the Ninth is much more experimental in its prose style, and takes place on a spaceship. The third installment, Nona the Ninth, is more traditional military scifi that takes place on a conflict-ridden colonized planet. All very good.
The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling
Okay this one's not really convoluted or military but it is sci-fi and I love it a lot. This is an extremely claustrophobic book with a two-person cast set in an abandoned mining cave on a distant planet (moon? i don't remember). Very spooky very good and I love the two VERY flawed characters and their whole dynamic. The main character lies her way into a job recovering something from this old cave system, but the woman on the other line has an agenda of her own.
EDIT: I totally forgot to mention the series I'm reading now, the first or which is Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee. it's about a space empire's extremely fucked up governing system and a military officer who gets bound to the revenant ghost of a dead war criminal. the first one is pretty dense but I'm enjoying the sequel better. Yoon Ha Lee is a trans man married to a man and these books have Lots of gender going on.
Things I haven't read yet but are on my list and I've heard good things about:
The Red Scholar's Wake by Aliette de Bodard
The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson
The Outside by Ada Hoffman
The Light Brigade by Cameron Hurley

Hiya!!
I just wanted to stop by and say just how much I loved reading If I Bleed (currently ranking high up as one of my favourite Leigh Shaw fics). The way you captured Leigh's personality and worked it into your own story was just incredible and omg so good! I can't get over that ending either; and I'm a sucker for love gained, but honestly this is an ending I'm satisfied with.
I hope to read more of your stuff in the near future! You totally deserve more credit that what you get now!
Also, would you have any advice for beginner writers who aspire to have their work published? Totally not asking for a friend haha
hey there!! 👋
Thank you much for reading and loving this series. I really enoyed writing it, and for you to tell me that it's one of your faves is just amazing :)
I hope to write more, but for now i'll take a little break :)
Work published as in fiction or you're talking about fanfiction? I've never published fiction except for some few short scifi stories under my real name, but for that i just submitted them to publishers online. For fanfiction, your biggest platform would be ao3, but it depends on the fandom. For wanda or other lizzie olsen characters, tumblr will get you the most exposure. But for other more mainstream ships, ao3 is your best shot. You can also upload on Wattpad. Most of all, write something you yourself want to read. You cannot expect others to get into your story if you're not into it the same way :)
