i am also never trying to bash etain in any way to defend my favoritest blorbo kal skirata, i definitely think that her character arc was poorly handled and the narrative itself was unkind to her. i don't blame any of the characters for that and i choose to believe the best of her as a character despite the narrative fucking her over deeply

i just don't think kal reads as misogynistic

even narratively with many of the female characters beginning to do traditional 'women's work' like cooking ect, the characters treat laseema's ability to run a kitchen for several dozen people as a hugely valuable skill, and most of those women with like, the exception of rav, are not trained as fighters, and it would be hugely irresponsible for the soldier characters to be like 'hey do you wanna come on this mission even though you have no idea how to do black ops shit so that i don't look like im being discriminatory'

that rant aside, and LET US NOT FORGET BESANY MOTHERFUCKIN 'STARTED AN ARMED SIEGE IN A HOSPITAL' WENNEN

here is my take on how kal treated etain and her pregnancy announcement

-nobody ever mentions the Check Incident when they talk about this. etain did something that greatly upset ordo, and although she was right and her actions saved besany's life, one of the points of repcomm is that no matter how morally correct or justified your action was, the consequences of it don't go away. and then instead of trying to solve it directly with ordo (which is fair because ordo is scary as fuck and also violently angry with her about it, and kal is pretty approachable) she talks to kal about it instead. he was pretty unhappy about that, and to him that looks like her not really treating ordo as a man and an equal

-after the initial blowup, kal isn't unkind to her. i believe the next time they actually see each other in person was on dorumaa when she was having complications, and he was concerned and was nice to her despite how messy the last time they saw each other was. etain was anxious he would still be mad at her, but he wasn't

-yes, he is angry with her at first. he blows up. he's an angry person, that's a very, very core trait of his- he perceived one of his sons being taken advantage of, if he didn't get angry about that he wouldn't be kal skirata

-i hate to bring this up but it is canonical that etain intended to become pregnant, on purpose, while suggesting to darman that she wasn't going to get pregnant. and i choose to believe that that's kt fucking her over narratively. but she did do something without even talking to darman about it at all, and then just like with checking ordo, went to kal about it instead expecting him to be able to fix the problem

-and he did. sure, he made demands, he didn't leave her much choice at all, he threatened her. but he did give her what she asked for. her intention was to give darman a mandalorian son, and kal did what he felt he needed to do to make sure darman's son was raised as a mandalorian

honestly my ideal fix-it for that scenario is actually kal going one step FARTHER and forcing etain to resign from her rank, and possibly the order if she has to. you chose to be a mother. you can't also be a general. for both your safety, and the safety of the baby, you cannot HAVE A PREGNANT WOMAN ACTIVELY PARTICIPATING IN A WAR JESUS CHRIST (yes he thought qiilura should be as safe as possible but STILL)

and just like with etain and ordo, no matter how justified your action was, you still have to face the consequences. and kal does when darman punches his lights out about it lol

also #ETAINLIVES. in anything i ever write or draw or have headcanons about lol. 501st is a whump fic with interesting character information to me, basically. last couple chapters of order 66 on ain't canon. not in my heart.

Twoblasters appeared from thin air into Rana’s hands as she eyed thedoor. A wild smile spread across her tanned face in anticipation. Herundercover mission finally took a turn for the exciting.

“Wheredid those come from?” the Jedi asked half distracted in deflectingblaster bolts from the droids.  His eyes scanned her over again.“There’s no room in that dress.”

Hemade no attempt to ask about her dropped persona and she offered noanswers. The boring party was over and the fun one had arrived.

Ranaspun on her heel and let loose a barrage of fire into the four ofbattle droids heading up the hallway. They were such easy prey shealmost felt bad for them. Strength in numbers was their onlyadvantage. It meant nothing when they were bottlenecked trying tomake it to the balcony.

She cracked up at his awe. “A lady never reveals her secrets,” sheteased. Chaos was her element.

Threemore of the droids appeared then dropped with ease. Her grouping ofthe shots was tight but still off. Everything went a lower or higherthan intended. Pride wanted to blame they were out of the intendedrange of her blasters. Logic knew the flaw was her. Short rangeblasters had never been her love nor talent. Punching droids,however, was not an option when armored in nothing.

“Wasit under the dress?” he mused to himself, “There were no linesthough.” He was backing up from the balcony railing to herposition. The blue slash of his his saber through the air pretty.“The inner hem barely covers her butt let along a weapon or even ahand. It doesn’t make sense.”

Fora moment their battle slowed then halted. No more droids made theirway up the hallway or tried to climb to their position. It was aweighted silence. Their breathing sounding harsh as it mixed with thedistant clang of fighting. Others were still fighting.

TheJedi flinched when her laugh shattered their silence. “Do youmeasure everyone’s dress by if it could conceal your hand?” sheteased, voice low and near purring. In their few hours ofacquaintanceship he made himself into her target. His reactions werefunny.

“What?No!” The words sputtered from him with such force she had to fightback another laugh. His embarrassment radiated so deep into the Forceshe could pick it up with ease. “That would be rude.”

Ranareached out to rest her hand on his arm. Glancing upward she couldsee the red creeping up the back of his neck. Tangling her fingers inthe rough material of his robe to turn him around. “So, it’s justme? My dress is the only one you measure by if your hand could restunseen on my ass? I feel special.”

Thesheepish look he gave her melted into the guilt Jedi wore so easily.If honest, she was not made at his comments. From what she picked uphis mouth moved faster than his brain could process. His blush movedhim guy to something firmly boyish.

“Iam so sorry,” he rushed to say. “That was an improper thing toever voice and I offer you my deepest condolences.” He looked downto the duracrete and stone floor. “It was the first thing to cometo mind and should not have been thought. Let alone voiced.”

Thewords rushed past her as empty words. Instead she honed in the colorof his eyes. A fierce, bright shade of blue that made her think ofcloudless skies. Against his pale skin and red blush she thought of asunset.

Whiteteeth gleaned against the dark red of her lipstick as she smiled. “Itwas handy unit of measurement you mean?” Mirth sparkled in her darkeyes.

Itwas his turn to laugh as he made certain to focus on her face. “Thatpun was terrible.”

“Youdelivered the set up.” Her hand dropped from his arm reluctantly.

Leaningpast his tall frame she focused on movement over the railing. Troopswere backing their way toward their position. At range, and without aview finder, she could only make out they were mutual enemies butflesh made ones. One carried a heavy enough pack to be a transmitterdirecting droid attacks. “Looks like the Stars are blessing me withanother great set up.”

Turninghe followed her line of sight to the troops. “Can you take them outfrom here?”

“Notwithout a Verp sniper,” she hummed while analyzing the situation.Getting the drop from her current position would not be difficult. Atwo story drop was nothing to her. The ornate courtyard providedplenty of cover to duck behind while working her way over to them.“But, I have a different plan.”

Helooked at her curiously to prompt her continue.

“You,Mr. Jedi, are going to turn your back to have deniability,” shetold him. Letting him watch she slipped the small blasters back intoher holsters hidden in her boots. “And I am going to hop thebalcony to collect information.” Unable to resist one last chanceto tease him she smirked while slipping her hand beneath her dress.With drawing the blade from it’s thigh holster she straightened theskirt of dress. “I want to know their plan.”

Beforehe could object, like a self-sacrificing Jedi, she nudged him out ofthe way. Backing up to the wall she sprinted forward and leapt overthe balcony with a wild look. Stars she loved a good hunt.

okay so your post abt alpha-17 and the other alpha arcs got me thinking (and im sorry for using you as sw google but in my mind you're Alpha Legends Lore mutual) who ARE the oldest clones? I feel like everything got... really confusing with a bunch of super secret REAL first clones getting shuffled into the order. is boba the oldest? in my mind it goes 1 boba 2 nulls 3 alphas 4 the rest of the initial clones that obi-wan saw in aotc but I have no bloody clue 😭

ok so. sources probably conflict bc this is star wars, of course they do. what i care about is repcomm so we're just gonna go with that as our primary source with wookieepedia as secondary sources

first we gotta get some dates. unfortunately star wars doesnt really give months for most dates but years is still a starting place. these dates are all pulled from wookieepedia, legends page when applicable/different

also we're using geonosis as our date reference point since the timeline is honestly so hard to work with

order 66 happens 19 bby

1st battle of geonosis, 22 bby, the clone wars are 3 years long

boba fett's birth date is listed as 32 bby, meaning he was 10 at geonosis. cody, rex, ordo, fi, spar, and sull are all also listed with a birth date of 32 bby, so we're down to a difference of months here. essentially they're all the same age though- boba himself, troopers, nulls, commandos, and alphas

I REPEAT. ALPHA IS NOT SIGNIFICANTLY OLDER THAN THE CORE OF THE GAR. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. HE ISNT THE ONLY ALPHA EITHER.

but who's actually oldest? and is wookieepedia entirely correct? this is the part where i open repcomm and ignore everything else. i don't even know if anything else contradicts because i'm not checking

chapter 1 of triple zero, kal has just arrived on kamino. it's eight years before geonosis, and 2 years into the cloning program

he does see a lot of clone babies in gestation vats, just like we see in attack of the clones as well as cadets of varying ages- the kaminoans continue producing troopers through the entire ten years of the cloning program, so yes, the 'first generation' (clones deployed at geonosis) ARE older than a lot of later clones. but we dont really have a lot of those later clones as named characters as far as i know

anyways

the nulls appear to kal to be 4 or 5 (also peep jango apparently being legitimately shocked by them)

chronologically the nulls are NEARLY two, which probably means like 1 year and 11 months or something

(pause for me to cry about this entire scene, 'kal was instantly proud of all of them,' 'how would you like to be called ordo, he was a mandalorian warrior,' kal teaching them to embrace their fear as a mechanism their body uses to help protect them, but this is gonna be long enough as it is)

and then we have jango showing up with boba. no real indication of if boba or the nulls are actually older, but it's implied that they're very very close in actual age, if not the same age. we also get mention of the commandos and the alphas.

now, this is now just down to what i think and what makes sense to me. the whole point of the nulls is that they were experimental units- the kaminoans wanted to see if tinkering with the genome would be worth it, and ultimately decided it wasn't. it would actually make sense to me if the nulls were at least a year or two older than the rest of the clones- the kaminoans need time to see if their experiment panned out, don't they? but the nulls are also 10 at geonosis

while the nulls have been flash-trained and put through some trial runs at this point, it's indicated that the alphas and commandos aren't quite ready for training yet. this could be because the alphas and commandos are just a bit too young yet, it could be that the kaminoans put the nulls through training at a younger age than they're doing for non-experimental units. not totally clear

this is another point that is important to me: multiple times the nulls pass for clone troopers. i keep seeing headcanons of them being noticeably taller/bigger than other clones and while it is true that they're canonically slightly heavier, i think the difference is probably like 10-20 pounds, most people cannot easily tell the difference. ordo puts on corr's armor and just notes that it's slightly tighter than he's used to. mereel infiltrated kamino in trooper armor unnoticed, even while directly speaking to a kaminoan

here is my opinion on it: -the nulls and boba are basically the same age -the alphas were created next, but a few months after. by this point the kaminoans had decided (possibly because of the nulls' high mortality rate in gestation) that the alphas would be fully unaltered aside from the accelerated aging. the nulls' behavior 'issues' proved to the kaminoans that this was the right call -the commandos were created at the same time or shortly after the alphas. we're talking within weeks if not days. they have minor genetic changes to work better as a team but that's about it. -the troopers then begin production, now that the kaminoans have lots of practice altering jango's genome. heavy alteration for better social cooperation and obedience. -we're talking a span on like 4 months for all of this

you could say that ordo's gray hairs support the nulls being maybe 4-6 months older than everybody else, but i really think he is just that stressy, and there's also book evidence for clones actually aging at variable rates depending on how much stress they're under

quick note for omega: i think her existence is just insane and she's only here because disney was making a children's show and needed a child character (and girl so they can get inclusivity points), but i could see her being made anywhere from at the same time as boba to up to 3 years later. her wookieepedia page doesn't say, because the bad batch never bothered to give us any concrete information on... anything.

arligan strikes me as having very specific tastes, when it's possible to reasonably accommodate. not necessarily fancy or over the top, but precise. bardan, like every teenage boy ever, will eat anything that enters his field of vision

kalreen is a truly heinous choice but i dont see any better options so good old kal/ny it is

kal doesnt sing in the shower but he does have heated imaginary debates with politicians that he hates, fortunately his showers take about 5 minutes. ny deserves a long shower, actually a whole bubble bath, but i fear she is also probably brutaly efficient (and also they cannot go getting busy in the shower, think of their hips, neither of them has life alert)

ny is the fun(ner) parent which is hilarious bc kal is already a pretty fun dad and will give his kids absolutely anything they want, but he will also yell at them to wear armor while playing limmie. meanwhile i think ny would teach the kids to bake cookies and knows she isn't even vaguely the disciplinary parent (it is kal's job to not be angry, just disappointed, son)

it has to be kal winning the stuffed animals because he is a devious motherfucker who knows how he would rig the games, and is also very very very good at throwing stuff at other things

neither of them are scared of the dark, but i dont think ordo is really ever going to not be afraid of big thunderstorms. also kudos to besany for dealing with her husband burrowing under the damn covers like a nocturnal submarine

i scanned page 1 of their blog so i knew exactly what i was blocking before i hit that beautiful little button but i forced myself to not dig deeper bc i have like, shit to do

and i was going to try to be so hard to be normal about this but actually im going to talk about it and kal haters in general

everyone who really, REALLY hates kal seems to have very vague and unsupported accusations like 'he's a misogynist, he's a fascist, he's emotionally abusive' but they never provide, like, screenshots or specific lines, it's all just nebulous buzzwords with no backup

if a person is pulling specific lines, they might not like kal but theyre not going to call people who do morally degenerate for liking the fucking character

and when i've actually discussed kal with people who claim to not like him at all, it pretty much boils down to that they like him except for how he handled etain telling him she's pregnant

and i think we can all agree that the pregnancy and baby plotline was unfortunate at best regardless of how exactly we feel about who was right and who fucked up (answer: both. they both fucked up so hard jesus christ you two. and they both have sympathetic and understandable reasons for what they did.)

also i feel that it's very important when discussing these books to remember a) they were written 20 years ago and yes when you think about it, that is actually a very long time and they introduced some hella progressive and previously not explored concepts such as a completely genderless culture (even if it was maybe executed a little awkwardly at times) b) these are military characters and they're actually all VERY tame and considerate if you've ever met anybody in the military before, c) if you read. ANY. other military fiction. JESUS FUCKING CHRIST repcomm is so kind and politically correct and questions and criticizes systems and tropes that many many other military fiction books actively encourage and d) kt wrote the first married gay couple to exist in star wars canon

ok at this point im just rambling but basically if you wanna have an actual debate about repcomm i love that shit but you gotta come to me with FUCKING SOURCES and please remember the context

bardan wants to drive so so so bad. no sane person wants to be in the passenger seat when bardan is driving. arligan lets him drive SOMETIMES. he gets way too excited about it and makes arligan regret this decision immediately. just because you can drive with your eyes closed because of The Force doesnt mean you HAVE TO, BARDAN. fortunately he's a great getaway driver

arligan strikes me as having very specific tastes, when it's possible to reasonably accommodate. not necessarily fancy or over the top, but precise. bardan, like every teenage boy ever, will eat anything that enters his field of vision
