One of my favorite scenes from A Separate Peace, taken from chapter four:

A French examination was announced for one Friday late in August. Finny and I studied for it in the library Thursday afternoon; I went over vocabulary lists, and he wrote messages—je ne give a damn pas about le francais, les filles en France ne wear pas les pantelons—and passed them with great seriousness to me, as aide-mémoire. Of course I didn’t get any work done. After supper I went to our room to try again. Phineas came in a couple of minutes later.

“Arise,” he began airily, “Senior Overseer Charter Member! Elwin ‘Leper’ Lepellier has announced his intention to make the leap this very night, to qualify, to save his face at last.”

I didn’t believe it for a second. Leper Lepellier would go down paralyzed with panic on any sinking troopship before making such a jump. Finny had put him up to it, to finish me for good on the exam. I turned around with elaborate resignation. “If he jumps out of that tree I’m Mahatma Gandhi.”

“All right,” agreed Finny absently. He had a way of turning cliches inside out like that. “Come on, let’s go. We’ve got to be there. You never know, maybe he will do it this time.”

“Oh, for God sake.” I slammed closed the French book.

“What’s the matter?”

What a performance! His face was completely questioning and candid.

“Studying!” I snarled. “Studying! You know, books. Work. Examinations.”

“Yeah ...” He waited for me to go on, as though he didn’t see what I was getting at.

“Oh for God sake! You don’t know what I’m talking about. No, of course not. Not you.” I stood up and slammed the chair against the desk. “Okay, we go. We watch little lily-liver Lepellier not jump from the tree, and I ruin my grade.”

He looked at me with an interested, surprised expression. “You want to study?”

I began to feel a little uneasy at this mildness of his, so I sighed heavily. “Never mind, forget it. I know, I joined the club, I’m going. What else can I do?”

“Don’t go.” He said it very simply and casually, as though he were saying, “Nice day.” He shrugged, “Don’t go. What the hell, it’s only a game.”

I had stopped halfway across the room, and now I just looked at him. “What d’you mean?” I muttered. What he meant was clear enough, but I was groping for what lay behind his words, for what his thoughts could possibly be. I might have asked, “Who are you, then?” instead. I was facing a total stranger.

“I didn’t know you needed to study,” he said simply, “I didn’t think you ever did. I thought it just came to you.”

It seemed that he had made some kind of parallel between my studies and his sports. He probably thought anything you were good at came without effort. He didn’t know yet that he was unique.

I couldn’t quite achieve a normal speaking voice. “If I need to study, then so do you.”

“Me?” He smiled faintly. “Listen, I could study forever and I’d never break C. But it’s different for you, you’re good. You really are. If I had a brain like that, I’d—I’d have my head cut open so people could look at it.”

“Now wait a second ...”

He put his hands on the back of a chair and leaned toward me. “I know. We kid around a lot and everything, but you have to be serious sometime, about something. If you’re really good at something, I mean if there’s nobody, or hardly anybody, who’s as good as you are, then you’ve got to be serious about that. Don’t mess around, for God’s sake.” He frowned disapprovingly at me. “Why didn’t you say you had to study before? Don’t move from that desk. It’s going to be all A’s for you.”

“Wait a minute,” I said, without any reason.

“It’s okay. I’ll oversee old Leper. I know he’s not going to do it.” He was at the door.

“Wait a minute,” I said more sharply. “Wait just a minute. I’m coming.”

“No you aren’t, pal, you’re going to study.”

“Never mind my studying.”

“You think you’ve done enough already?”

“Yes.” I let this drop curtly to bar him from telling me what to do about my work. He let it go at that, and went out the door ahead of me, whistling off key.

Green Witch Arc Appreciation Post

This is nothing new, but I'm obsessed with the shift that happens within Ciel and Sebastian's relationship at the end of the Green Witch Arc.

I always joke that the two of them are insufferably clingy after they are briefly separated between the time that Ciel recovers from his psychosis and during the climactic battle. However, I wanted to bring attention to the significance of this shift and why it is so important to their dynamic.

When Ciel is first inflicted by the mustard gas, he rejects all forms of physical touch outside of Finny. Perhaps most alarmingly, he rejects Sebastian's touch. Ciel's sensitivity to physical touch is nothing new either, since he continually displays his distaste for Sebastian's touch without his blatantly given consent.

Once Ciel recovers from his psychosis, and is later reunited with Sebastian we go from this:

It's honestly jarring to me how much they touch each other during these chapters, and how overtly possessive they are of one another. I might even argue that physical touch becomes one of their "love" languages, for lack of a better way of phrasing it. The two have always had a way of silent, covert signalling towards each other, as well as Sebastian's obvious acts of service. But their comfortability with touch seems to shift drastically after this arc, as if their relationship is moving from passive ocular desire to physical action that displays loyalty/trust/endearment/possession.

Anyway, TL;DR, I'm obsessed with them.

a coming-of-age novel set at an all-boys new england boarding school. follows two boys, Gene and Finny, and their experiences during the summer and winter sessions of 1942. talks a bit about WWII and what role the boys may have to play in that, but it stays pretty focused on the school and the emotions involved during this time in one's life. all the growth and transformation and oddly homoerotic, perhaps very codependent, friendship of a bildungsroman that we love to look for.

one of my personal favorite books, even considering that it was assigned reading. i truly believe many of you would like it and i know for a fact some of you can vouch for me

very emotional. that's all! i preferred the movie, but i liked the format of the book being completely in letters that Charlie was writing. they're both good! (if you watch the movie, the english teacher's name is Mr. Anderson. so do with that information what you will...!)

JUST HEAR ME OUT ON THIS ONE okay. it's about a trio of siblings, orphaned, who are shuttled from one parental unit to another while being followed by a man after their immense wealth. they quickly discover they are in the midst of an intellectual conflict in a secret organization. they must rely on only each other, seeing as all the adults around them are wildly incompetent and/or unhelpful. and it is filled to the brim with literary references!!

both versions have really fun and witty narration, and the tv adaptation is extremely faithful. i don't know how else to describe it without going overboard so i'll settle for not descriptive enough! just trust me. yes it is a kids' series and yes it is one of my favorites ever. it's the vibes of it all

about a group of Shakespeare theater students at a very pretentious arts school who find themselves in a very high-tension dynamic following a disaster that occurs after their halloween performance of Macbeth. lots and lots of Shakespeare, lots of dramatics, and the book itself is divided into five acts.

i finished this in about two nights and it was extremely creatively inspiring. it was a bit predictable, but that's not a bad thing. it still had me clutching my pearls and dropping my jaw

House M.D. (2004-2012) - tv series about genius diagnostician Dr. Gregory House and his team at a hospital in new jersey. Robert Sean Leonard stars as House's best friend and head of oncology Dr. James Wilson. very comedic but also very heartwrenching.

Tape (2001) - three friends meet at a motel room and dredge up and argue over unpleasant events of the past. starring Ethan Hawke and Robert Sean Leonard.

Before Sunrise (1995) - from letterboxd: "A young man and woman meet on a train in Europe, and wind up spending one evening together in Vienna. Unfortunately, both know that this will probably be their only night together." Ethan Hawke plays one half of the lead duo.

and yeah there's a LOT more but those are the ones i've seen and sincerely recommend. not to say others aren't good but this is a (very) curated list you see.

🩵Finny - Trollsona💐

Loving their design, literally my new persona I love them SO much. I decided to give them a little plot device to connect to Canon because I'm writing the MOST EXTENSIVE BOOK AND RESEARCH STUDY ON JOHN FUCKING DORY it's driving me nuts WAY more then BRANCH AND FLOYD I hate John sm he just reminds me of my fucking dad which HEY- is basically Finny and John's dynamic here (but it ends up very heartwarming)

I also don't like one specific music genre?? I'm a huge mix of all kinds of music so I decided to implement that into Finny! As an example; I utilized Hip-Hop as more of the typical environment that Finny was raised in, adapting to enjoy that type of music, while having the intensive personality and passion of a Hard Rock Troll (in Finny's case, Modern Rock) AND their appearance typically fits that of a Hip Hop/Pop Troll (similar to Cooper but anthropomorphic, giving a more Pop/Gradient troll apperance then Funk) I've always been such a mixed bag with different traits so this felt very fitting!

Gene and Brinker, good sir?

AHHH okay okay

what made you ship it?

reading the book lol. ok so i feel like there's a lot of context i need to explain for this beyond just the book's subtext bc there's a bit of personal lore here. before teaching us the book, my middle school english teacher introduced each of the central four characters with this powerpoint with a slide on each one, and the way she described them like archetypically and physically made it sound almost like (to MY middle school brain) a dating sim, in which gene was the main character. like the blurb already sounds very romance novelesque so jdkshfkh. ig it wasn't too big a leap. so we already have a baseline there.

i also think that in the book brinker and gene are a secondary and competing rivarly/friendship to gene and finny's rivarly/friendship, and i think that's where the tension between brinker and gene and brinker and finny comes from. in fact this is kind of just text, like brinker and finny i think are pretty explicitly competing for gene's attention. i'm pretty sure there are some like old asp posts from the earlier 2010s era of the fandom where people are like "brinker and gene/finny have such ex energy", but iirc it was more often finny? like i'm definitely not the only person to see this Thing brinker has going on with gene, but at the time i'm p sure brinkerfinny was the more widespread take. anyway. brinker pursues gene so relentlessly both as an antagonist and as a guy who just Needs to be doing things with him, Needs to be occupying his time and attention. and yet they maintain this weird friendship/understanding throughout. to me this was most pronounced with the whole enlistment thing, and that dynamic where gene had to choose between finny and brinker for the enlistment/not enlistment??? it just gave very love triangle energy. the intensity with which brinker is fixated on gene is like. it gives repressed queer guy with problems. it's beyond wanting to antagonize him, he just is constantly coming up with excuses to be around him and to orient his focus around the pursuit of this one guy. his need to be morally superior to the object of his pursuit feels very queercoded to me. it's a very funny contrast to other parts of the book where he and gene are seemingly chill and normal friends? boy has issues

2. what are your favorite things about the ship?

HOOOOOO okay i have a long answer for this because it has to do with how i accidentally made myself insane about them. so i have this really long winded headcanon-turned-sequel fic in my Brain and Mind about gene and brinker moving in together after the war for kind of money reasons and kind of personal reasons. gene has been depression camping in finny's family's attic for a long undefined amount of time, and brinker is like hey you need to get the fuck out of there come live with me idiot. cue several years later and this is where the fic starts. i usually have it start at the time that gene would've gone back to visit devon, because i like the idea of that whole thing happening during a hs reunion in devon town, in which he and brinker joint travel and stay with his family which is its own whole awkwardness but anyway. <- culmination of everything i've ever thought about them since eighth grade

most of my genebrinker thoughts center around this period of adulthood where they're not young anymore but they're not old either, and they have all this unresolved tension and shared trauma and resentment that spills over into their "present" relationship. i think this is where genebrinker would theoretically "actually" start, in adulthood. i think there could've been ambiguous things earlier, especially during their joint enlistment period if they happened to be together, but nothing very deliberate or openly acknowledged until much later. it's this delicious mix of both having an established very domestic and familiar dynamic, knowing this person's routines and habits inside out, and yet having this pent up unspoken something. and for gene and brinker, it's not just this quiet tenderness, although i think that's bound to happen sometimes when you're essentially apartment husbands. i think they'd blow up at each other and let things slip during heated moments that they don't mean to, mostly on brinker's side, bc i think brinker's been nursing some kind of crush since hs, whereas if gene returned brinker's feelings, i think they'd slowly build over time. their familiarity with each other is also very interesting because, while they have this odd like, daddy issues(?) solidarity in the book that again feels very queer, in adulthood, it's also this thing of like, they kind of shared the murder of one of their closest friends. my fav think about genebrinker is that they know the worst of each other, that they actively participated in some of the worst parts of each other's lives, but it's that coupled with like, arguing over dinner and visiting the parents and trying to hold down stable jobs. or i guess for something more connected to the actual book, that coupled with like, accompanying your friend to an awkward meeting with his dad

this is not even all the things i think about their dynamic or all the like underlying sources of tension in their adult relationship in my head, i also think they'd be in very different places in terms of sexuality, and that would come to a head at some point, but i'll stop here because this is a question about my favorite THING, not explain every thought you've ever had about them

3. is there an unpopular opinion you have about your ship?

i think the entire ship is an unpopular opinion lmfao. like 90% of this is my headcanons. ummm i have brinker being the more responsible of the two when i write them as adults, if still the more temperamental one, so that might be controversial? i think at this stage of their lives, he's more practical and better at home ec stuff, and gene cannot fucking take care of himself for the life of him. gene is running himself into the ground while brinker is like get your fucking socks off my floor

hey so who are your favourite characters in black butler? like a top ten or something

heyyyy thanks for asking! sure, always nice to cover the basics. ofc this will probably not be surprising to anyone who's heard me rant for a while now, but I'll explain it anyway.

top 3 first:

1. Ciel: an atrocious guy with very little social personality, and one of the best written protagonists I've personally read. I'm just really into digging through this guy's brain, and when he isn't destroying people he's doing things that end up being funny.

2. Sebastian: another well written protagonist, despite the fact that we know absolutely nothing about him other than the fact that his personality is "cats, I'm better than everyone, except for agni maybe". I remember in my first year in the fandom a friend and I had a like 2 hour long text conversation about how much we hated and loved Sebastian. terrible guy, couldn't have the series without him, leaves a lot to think about.

3. Grelle: she's just as if not more atrocious than the last 2 cause she made these awful decisions herself, but that doesn't stop me from respecting her work ethic and just thinking she's awesome in general. and aside from how cool she looks, I think her inner thoughts and relationships with her coworkers is so curious, there is a lot to explore here. compelling character for me.

4. Elizabeth: she's one of the purest characters out there and she is so complex. a good amount of people hate her or just find her annoying for whatever reason, but I think the trend here is that the more flawed the character is the better. she's trying so hard to please everyone. probably one of the most relatable characters in her own way.

5. Soma: the source of joy in my life, God I wish he was my friend. he and Agni are basically equal in my ranking, I think they're just the kid mentor duo, but unfortunately only one of them has the chance to keep developing... ;;;^;;;

6. Agni: "agni" was good every day of his life until the end. the only thing he did wrong was out of loyalty for Soma, Sebastian should be jealous of him cause he is all the butler that Sebastian will never be. plus he just cries sometimes and I respect that.

7. Ronald: this is such a fun guy, and yet I am capable of having long conversations about him and everything that he could have possibly been through, it has been done. his workplace dynamic is perfect. everyone needs a Ron.

8. Finny: another pure being, he's such an interesting and honestly rare character, I don't often see other people like him in media, so obviously he's interesting. he's one of the only characters in kuro who have deep trauma and yet doesn't act negatively on it, either because he's unable to comprehend it at length or because his love and positivity for all things is just stronger. also he's Ciel's big bro fr.

9. Meyrin: she's awesome, Hollywood and feminists alike wish they were able to write a strong female character like her😏 she's freakishly powerful and one of the most feminine people out there, and she deserves that after what she's been through. I will never stop supporting her, she's everyone's big sis and she's adorable.

10. Bard: proud dad to all the servants, he's the wacky beer uncle that we all wish we had. he's conservative but just give him some time cause he does care about people and what makes them happy.

I also LOVE Stu as an out going, happy, out in the open omega who embraces that rather than shies away from it. It’s refreshing to have Stuart happy and content. --- yeah i know!! especially because actual overse has their dynamics completely switched; stu is the one who gets put through shit, and is shy and scared as a result, while vk is the one who's all confident in his own skin. ngl it's nice to flip the roles here! 😁 i love to see stui owning it in life!

ahhh vk meeting finny, i agree he'll be so confused, because he can't fathom the idea of an omega dating a beta, he's grown up being told that once he's 18, his family will find a nice alpha for him. a beta or another omega was never considered a suitable match.

ahh yes i forgot jimmy was supposed to be vk's late husband's business associate 😝 i can see jimmy not really seeing much of vk during his stay, because vk is an omega and so naturally he's kept cloistered and sheltered, far away from a stranger alpha. the only time jimmy really sees vk is when he's serving the alphas their meals, and even then only for a brief moment, as vk does his work and immediately scurries back into the kitchen. the environment in his family is such that omegas aren't permitted to interact or even see alphas outside their family. since jimmy only ever sees vk when he's doing the housework, and he's never ever heard him speak, he at first assumes that vk is the domestic help 🤪 then vk's alpha introduces him as his omega, and jimmy's like, "does he speak?" honestly, it would be so funny if the first time jimmy heard vk talk in front of him is on the day his husband died, and he's protesting against the husband's family wanting to burn him. 😂😂 then jimmy's like, "oh so you can speak. good to know!" xD

Ahaha yes we love a role reversal!

To him the only option for an omega is an alpha. And omega not only dating but carrying the bond mark of a beta is absolutely fathoming to VK. He tries to touch the mark because he's intrigued and everyone in his new life has let him feel like he's free to do what he wants and Stu just grabs his wrist like:

"What are you doing?" "What IS that??" "It's my bond mark." "So you have an alpha AND a beta?!?" "No. This is Steve's mark. I don't have, want or need an alpha." "... What?!?!"

His poor mind is so blown with this information. The only beta he really knows is Ali, who wears Jimmy's mark, but he's never seen anyone with a beta mark on them. He didn't know that was possible.

Ahha Jimmy would so be like that. it's also why he instantly jumps in to help VK because things are all starting to click and he understands what he was actually a witness to and he quickly discovers he is not a fan of it.

First of all, you and Ciel are really cute together. Hopefully you will be able to stir him up and get him to have some fun... You two seem to represent that kind of "troublesome guy x unfortunately has to deal with them" ship dynamic that I always loved.

But now I wonder, what other canon events would have gone differently with your s/i in it? Especially since Ciel and Sebastian decided to use your s/i for his knowledge of canon events (even if it barely helped). You also mentioned that lately you've been thinking a lot about the current arc, so what about that?

And it's kinda funny how both of us have our Black Butler s/is isekai-ed into their world from ours. I also got this idea from similar "x reader" fanfiction I was reading a long time ago.

Except my s/i ended up getting adopted (kinda) by Undertaker instead, and later was too busy working in the funeral parlour and slowly slipping into the madness to influence the plot...

Anyway, about your s/i again. How does he look? Do you have any drawings or picrews or just written description? Asking just so I could picture you and Ciel together.

funny you mention your s/i being adopted kind of by undertaker bc i’ve been playing with a similar idea! instead of adoptee, it’s more kidnapee-but-not-really. he was already suspicious of komie, what with ciel just appearing one day with him and even more so by the fact that he always seemed to be five steps ahead of everything, like he always knew what was next. at first he dabbled with the idea of something supernatural, but i think at the end i’ve been toying with the idea of him ‘kidnapping’ komie during the whole blavat sky thing (that arc) but honestly im still not very sure what with the manga still going.

kidnapping in quotes because it’s not so much as kidnapping as me more or less willingly going with him, though originally that was the first draft, i switched to pinning komie’s departure from ciel’s side to his own selfishness. undertaker did have a part in his convincing to leave though.

i’ve been thinking a lot about the current arc trying to figure out how komie ties into it, whether having him be an active player as he’s always been or kind of just sitting on the sidelines watching everything play out for once. this is also in part due to that i really have no idea how the manga is gonna play out, i kept flip-flopping between being with r!ciel and lizzy (in my universe lizzy and i are close), and being wherever undertaker is, (essentially switching me always following ciel to me following him).

yeah, the current arc is messy for komie i don’t know what im doing with myself yet (￣w￣;)

that’s quite funnu though! that both of our inserts have both been just dropped in the story! i’m curious on what you mean by too busy descending into madness ??

the emerald witch arc (the next one to be animated, hooray!!!) is the last arc i have more or less thought out well (all my self ships are more or less thought out, lol)

i think komie ends up taking a lot more of a caretaker role for ciel, and he’s also a lot more careful with him during the emerald witch arc. at first he stops ciel from going into the forest too, because at this point he’s very fond of ciel and doesn’t want him to hurt, but at some point he does push ciel to go into the forest as he’s meant to.

like how finny takes care of ciel, komie also does as he’s more like a kid. at this point, guilt starts to creep up on komie because he just has to let bad things happen to the people he’s grown to care for and he becomes a little detached (this leads into the next arc, similar to lizzy). at some point between these two arcs, i think ciel and ki have a moment and for a little, ki goes back to the same but i think it’s a quick regression to his state during the witch arc.

speaking of witch arc, i remember i had an idea that i kill someone (one of the german women who tried to kill wolf, but id have to reread the arc to actually flesh that out… i forgot what happened…)

also funny ! sometime before the actual start of the green witch arc / during the public school arc, ciel finds out komie’s actual age�� lizzy was trying to find out my birthday, lo and behold i admit my eighteenth was a month ago. ciel just goes quiet and looks at me— he genuinely didn’t believe i was that older than him.

its a funny moment, lizzy’s sad i didn’t tell her during easter, edward has his head in his hands— his mind is running crazy— he’s like oh!, and ciel is just staring. he blushes a little. anyways komie is just like sry gang (victorian version)

for the visuals of komie i have these 2! the first’s purpose is mostly to get a feel for the dressing/how he dresses + hair and the second is for the more actuate body type :3 obviously i dress very differently given… 1800s… but it’s a good representation of how i looked when i landed in the phantomhive garden in the first place (also my pajamas)

but if you want a kind of not really… more accurate to the kind of clothes i switch to wearing once actually in the 1890s, that’s the third picture (a little plain, it’s probably be more detailed / different in reality but just a vague idea! the general idea is more coverage lol)

we go back and forth for a while, having me go through the different fabrics and try to explain how they are and the differences as he gauges my reactions. it’s embarassing because i can tell he doesn’t really get it, but he also doesn’t relent. we leave and i get a new blanket. a few weeks later, a little before the trip to germany— i find a few new clothes on my bed.

“ciel?” i examine the neatly wrapped package. its green. i look back up at him from the doorway across the room. “what is this?”

“clothes,” he doesn’t look up from his paperwork. “you were uncomfortable before, weren’t you?”

“sometimes,” i answer.

his pen stops. “now you won’t be.”

i stare at him, the quiet scratching of his pen being the only sound filling the air between us. that’s kind of you, but i don’t say it.

“oh…” i turn the package around in my hands. did he have sebastian wrap it? “thank you.”

Vampire Finny being the most loyal of the crew hell probably more than Sebastian when it comes to protecting Ciel. Finny over time and years of being with Ciel becomes Seb's fledgling learning how to be head of the house and eventually does so while Sebastian works in the shadows being Ciel's true guardsman. Idk it'd be an interesting dynamic concerning the passage of time and of course Finny does the Gardening, he insists to do it regardless of his already huge workload.

finny doing his best to learn how to be a good right hand man, maybe he's not great as a butler but he tries so hard. he wouldnt learn as quickly as sebastian did (partly because he's got canon learning issues and cuz sebs demon ass retains info faster than a human) BUT he could get help from tanaka too and over the years become better and better. and he absolutely would still do the gardening, it would tire him out so much but he'd be so dedicated that ciel wouldnt have the heart to tell him to hire a new gardener. with every cup of blood he serves he'd put a flower on the tray for ciel who tells him its silly but always takes the flowers and holds them like a lovesick teenager when finny leaves the room <3

god and to add in some vampire flavor, whenever ciel is sick or injured, he immediately will offer up his wrist or neck or anything else for ciel so his blood will help him heal faster, and if anyone says anything about it he simply states "i'm ciels right hand man, of course I would do this for him ^-^" (while secretly getting really excited and lovestruck whenever ciels got his teeth in him because he chose finny to drink from and not someone else)

quick lil context of me even getting into this also! so my roomie and I have a tradition of watching really bad animes during finals weeks and this time my rookie suggested we watched black butler 2 (still so funny it’s just 2 not season two not book of ___ no. just two. Peak comedy) first half of that was laughably bad and then like ep 7 onward it was frustratingly good. Some bizarre pacing some bizzare writing choices but I liked it overall. anyways over winter break out of nowhere I got manga spoilers on my tiktok for Agni’s death and. It emotionally devastated me bc I loved him sm bc of the like one ep in 2 where he appeared. i told my roomie that and we decided to like actually watch the good parts of the anime so I could get a taste of the actual plot (and eventually we watched s1 lmao)

so yeah that bit didn’t impact me as much when I actually read it but 😭 Agni I miss you dearly you’re like one of the only people I’d trust to hold my drink in this series I KNOW you would take care of it and not spill anything. Also, I read the entire (post campania) manga while procrastinating studying for my organic chemistry exam bc chemistry is a pain in the ass and I didn’t want to look at it

Other arcs. so the school arc has some BIZARRE pacing- (and i never got used to the just casually dropping the F word even if it was used iba like historical context) I was half skimming some of the pages bc I thought it was gonna be basically a fluff filler arc so that end caught me off guard- deffo enjoyed the soma content though! i sure hope he stays happy and nothing awful happens to make him stop smiling! hahah fuck.

Emerald witch arc is kinda funny to me. like yeah, okay queen of England, send this 13 (14?? I forgor) year old child to a different country to deal with werewolves. this isn’t even ur country girly what. Wolf and miss sullivan (can’t spell her first name) r fun characters I like their addition a lot. Could’ve done without the uh. weird scenes with sullivan but. whatever. (The scenes with finny taking care of ciel also were so sweet Omg I will cry- finny is probably one of my top 5 charas I love himmmmm he scares me tho )

Notes - The start of the book was a bit slow, but it was a great introduction into seeing finny again after the first books original release a few years ago. I just read it a few months ago so all of this is fresh in my memory still. Seeing the glimpses of Finns point of view was a sweet thing that i think played out nicely. The way the perspectives are split into three is actually really cool. I caved when i first bough the book a week ago and read some bad (and good!!) reviews. Some people really HATED the three-part-pov thing. I think it’s very creative, and i’ve personally never seen a book laid out in this manner before. It’s smart. I really do like finns perspective, though. Getting to see the relationship through his eyes is opening in a way i didn’t expect. He ALWAYS loved her, and he fell first and hard. Unrelated but related to the book, I’ve sort of falled in love with morally grey characters like “accidental” cheaters (there is no accidental cheating btw but you get my drift) who are just like finn, who have girlfriends but are romantically engaged in another person. This could be physically, like finn, or even just romantic feelings. It’s morally grey. It’s up to opinion. I hate cheaters in real life but in media i find them very fascinating and dynamic and i think it gives them a lot of character they have to grow from. The reveal that Autumn didn’t know he loved her made sense for me. After reading the first book, we know she settled for Jamie. She didn’t love him the way she loved Finn, the way Finn loved her. They were both blinded. I kind of think Finn and Autumn are perfect together, and make so much sense. If i’m being honest, i dont exactly remember jack as a character from the first book (as i said, its been a couple months) but i like whats being depicted of him in Finn’s chapters. I also saw that people were upset that Jack gets his own dedicated section, so we’ll see how that plays out. The confrontation scene from sylvie was strong and needed, especially after the cheating. She handled herself very well, which is almost not accurate, but there WAS anger there. It was just..well handled. The accident makes sense with the rain, but i don’t understand why the death... was retconned? I always imagined he died IN THE CRASH from the first book. Maybe im a bit illiterate, or maybe it’s just been a couple months and i forgot. there’s a lot of maybes. maybe Laura Nowlin just wanted a better explanation for his death, and a thrown wire explains it. At least, thats the only thing i can explain “electrocution��� for. I’ve finally decided that Jack’s chapter was an important part to include. Sure, he’s “just his friend” but its an important chapter of grief that shows how EVERYONE is coping, not just jack. Finns story ended short. Autumns story is about pregnancy. But Jack? His story is the one about the aftermath. It was needed. Necessary. This book would’ve contained TOO much had it not been split up the way it was. The grief is strong throughout this book, and i think it was beautifully written. The way people handle it differently, and the way all react is so poignant. The way Alexis gets Friend Broken Up with by Sylvie was so justified. I feel like, personally, Jack could rely on Sylvie if she allowed it. it’d give them both a chance to grieve before leaving for college. The reveal that everyone doesn’t really want to be friends with Jack after the accident is a shocking reveal, but it makes sense because they’re all just processing in their own way. The talks of Jack having to go through college without Finn are so tough. Usually when college students are upset, its because theyre homesick, they miss family, or they want to go home. It’s hard, but Jack’s is different. He just wants Finn back. Brett and Jack bonding together was so sweet for me. Brett sharing a similar story with his twin brother dying helps him connect with Jack, when previously, jack just thought he was an asshole. Autumn attempting suicide was another darker moment in the book, and the reveal that she’s pregnant made it 10x darker for Jack to process. He see’s pieces of Finn in autumn, and if she died, it’d be like the rest of Finn dying. It’s selfish, but it’s true. The end to jacks part was sentimental, and sweet. The reveal that Autumn is still struggling even while pregnant is, again, tough. Autumn choosing to keep the baby for herself and not just finny was a strong moment to include, and i’m shocked it was if im being honest. I didn’t think the topic of abortion would be addressed at all. The dynamic between Angie and Dave is... interesting.  He’s kinda toxic. I like that Sylvie is supportive, and doesn’t blame Autumn. I know she IS to blame, but so was Finn. And she was mad at finn, not autumn. The therapy sessions are also interesting and i’d like to see how it progresses. Autumn likes her therapist but doesnt exactly vibe with the people all that much-- yet. I like the dynamic between Brittaney and Autumn. They make a good grouping of people, but i dont know if i’d call it a friendship. They’re just there for each other. The reconnection between John and Autumn is cool to me because he genuinely seems to be trying as hard as he can, while still failing. It’s his fault, and it’s not his fault. It’s very hard. The baby having a hole in her heart feels very symbolic for me. People die, and you cant stop it. Your children, the people you love, your friends, everyone dies, and if we see risk everywhere, we’ll never outrun it. She’s missing a big piece of her life (this baby) and she’ll have to learn it from those around her. Jack and Sylvie getting together was my DREAM SCENARIO!! if you remember, i SAID THEY WERE PERFECT!!! I like how the book ends with Autumn still in therapy, still depressed, but working through it. She has this big support system, and eventually, a baby. It’s very sweet.

Well since I'm on the subject, Finn Mcmissile and my carsona Alma Mater. Alma is a mechanic (medic in their world) who originally studied under Doc Hudson before moving on to join CHROME. She's reserved but has a natural curiosity about the world and interest in travel. In car form she is a bubblegum pink & mint tow truck.

They meet at Miles Axelrod's prelaunch party. At the time Finn was in disguise spying on the guests and Alma was wandering about lost in the crowd. When a dancing song came up, in the heat of the moment Finn pulled her into his arms - er wheels - to make himself as normal as possible. This surprised Alma and she asked him who he was. Finn responded with "a friend" and while she was suspicious, she sensed he wasn't a threat and danced with him.

When Alma was told the truth she was surprised but, knowing lives were at stake, decided to help him on his mission. They got along pretty well (what u thought this is gonna be another bickering couple cliche?) Finn was impressed by Alma's talents and kindness. Alma was also surprised to find Finn to be a welcome character for his compassion and gentleness with rookies like her.

A defining moment would be in Italy where they visit Luigi & Guido's family. There's some moments like going to the market place, or to the beach. It's like both admit they want to take time to settle down but are overwhelmed with work and other personal problems. Seeing their friends interacting with the townsfolk gives them a better perspective on balancing their lives.

Finn and Alma are open with their feelings. I think it takes a few months after the events of 2 where Finn visits her in Radiator Springs & admits he has developed a romantic attraction. Alma decides to give romance a try.

Finn calls Alma "love" "dearie" "sweetheart" it makes her swoon. Alma calls him babygirl as a joke - it throws him off! 😆 She also calls him Finny, or love.

Their first date would be visiting the waterfalls followed by late night tractor tipping. In UK Finn takes her out to the little ferris wheel in london, or the pubs

Due to the nature of their jobs they do things very late at night. Alma doesn't mind it as she's used to doing nighttime activities and even finds it soothing. If she's in Scotland they go to the pub.

After Alma joined Chrome she moved in with Finn in his countryside estate. They also have a flat in London where CHROME HQ is located. In America they stay at Alma's cottage.

Finn does words of affirmation, gift giving and acts of service. Alma is physical touch&quality time.

Finn befriends almost everyone in Radiator Springs not just for Alma's sake but also because he's simply a pleasant person to be around. Alma becomes close to Holley Siddley and Rod (who doesn't die in my au)

Finn's family are actually relieved he found someone because they were starting to get worried that his lifestyle may get too isolating for him. Ofc Mater and Lightning were very supportive of Alma & Finn. Everyone else too, save for the Sergeant: he felt finn was a bit too old for her XD

Gadgets, sleek futuristic, neon hearts, and travel are themes in Finn x Alma. Also Sky x Fire dynamic

Finally checked out the Phantom & Ghost game and it was very cute. It was fun to see the early dynamics between the characters, esp lizzy/ciel since the manga didn't have room for it. So here are some parts i liked:

- ciel really tries to play everything cool, especially in front of sebastian. like, he doesn't want to act too childish? he gets impulsive thoughts to sneak up on sebastian or throw a fit about his pillow or sweets, even though he knows he's being unreasonable. it fits his manga personality from the early volumes when all he wanted to do was steal sweets and take naps. its nice to see that yana considers ciel very much like a child from his pov.

- sebastian and lizzys dynamic! it's soo cute! I really love the way that they prop each their up and flatter each other that it's becomes a cycle. like a little game between them. ciel cannot stand it lol.

- Omg finny!!1💞💞💞 I loved his interactions with sebastian so much, playing detective with the village's children. also like sebastian making mey rin sweets. Kinda wish the game had more cute moments like this than just playing minigames all the time.

- lau and lizzy were unexpectedly cute! so nice of lau to entertain lizzy with games or walks around the manor. I really would like to see more of them but alas... (T���T)

- nice that yana had lizzy apart of the adventure this time? she doesn't become an active character until much later in the story, so it's nice she got to do this now. cute seeing her sneak around the mansion with ciel and him openly relying on her with the case. lizzy and stella were adorable btw!! ghost besties for life!!1💗💝💕

I can’t wait for Finny and snake story, first because Finny is a sunshine and Snake is so mysterious to me, like at first I thought he was just a shy boy but then reading some posts saying he could be a demon or smth, tbh I don’t think he’s an experiment subject like Finny because he was shown inside a circus cage like he doesn’t have any memories of being a test subject, maybe he never met his demon parent he was in a circus environment since little. And also I have to add that the interaction between Finny and snake is really cute and I feel like they can be genuine friends, Finny is more like an older brother to Ciel imo, and Finny and snake had similar childhoods being neglected and abused.

Norfolk flashbacks

I think the main idea of Snake being an experiment is one in which Snake is born as an experimental genetic cross between human and snake… or something like that. Not like how Finny was given injections. Still, it’s a stretch. It’s actually easier for me to believe Snake might be part demon, and I’ve posted a time or two about that.

I don’t know which one of them we will get the major flashbacks from. But I say it’s probably Finny, since he was the first servant to be hired after our earl’s return to the manor, and because he’s so completely loyal to our earl. We have hints about his life at that research facility, and we have hints regarding how he escaped, but that’s about it. We don’t know how long he was there or how he got there, but I have a theory he’s the son of the researcher who was sent to kill the subjects. I take special note of how the guy kills the other two subjects first and then still hesitates on S-012. I see Finny and Sieglinde as having very similar situations, growing up in military facilities where they are lied to and forced to do as they are told. And it’s their own parents, who should be protecting them, who get them involved. We know that’s the case with Sieglinde, but I theorize it’s similar for Finny, except that his father didn’t want to kill him, whereas Sieglinde’s mother was perfectly willing to sacrifice her own daughter to keep the military’s secrets. And Sieglinde leaves with the knowledge her own mother set her up. If that researcher is Finny's father, he might have escaped without learning the truth.

I would love to see Finny's story, because details are definitely missing from the snippets we've seen. I wonder if the guy (if he's Finny's father) ends up confessing this to his son... and then takes his own life. We don't actually know who kills this guy; is it Finny or himself? I'd previously assumed it was Finny, but now I'm not sure. Either way, this guy has a reason for hesitating to kill S-012, when he shows no such hesitation towards killing the other two kids. Even more interesting if the guy calls him by anything other than S-012 before he dies.

We could get some more background on Snake, but I don’t think it matters quite as much. Plus, we saw him join the Phantomhive household, so Yana-san doesn’t need to cover that again. It’s quite possible Snake doesn’t even know whatever particularly interesting truth there is to learn about him, like why he looks part snake, why he can communicate with snakes, why the pungi (snake charming instrument) affects him, etc. Reminds me of the first kuromyu, Friendship, in which the demon, Kirito, is fatally injured by Yuuki playing this special flute that exorcises spirits and demons. I see that musical as a huge parallel to Agni's later death. He's not a demon, but he can go toe to toe with one, thanks to the Right Hand of Kali. In the link just above, there's a discussion about this.

And here's another post on the topic... making parallels between these dynamic duos: Yuuki and Kirito, our earl and Sebastian, and Soma and Agni. Kirito and Agni each become better people, and they both end up dying to protect their masters. Could Sebastian, particularly if he learns to become a better person, end up dying, too? Even if Snake isn't a demon/part demon, he has very special non-human abilities, while Finny, though "fortified", is still apparently 100% human. And even though Finny isn't Snake's master, Snake could end up dying trying to protect him... or dying trying to indirectly protect our earl. Whatever the exact scenario, if we lose Finny or Snake in Norfolk, I envision us losing Snake.
