I love that in the Podcast they specifically said they wanted to frame the hospital fight not as this action packed scene, but as sad. Because Joel has completely disassociated. He’s checked out because trauma can do that to a person, let’s you separate what’s happening. They said this is him burning his soul for this one girl. He’s doing what needs to be done in the same way Marlene did but while her focus was humanity, his focus is just Ellie. It’s tunnel vision. He kills anyone who is a threat and even if they drop their weapon, they could change their mind and still shoot him and then Ellie dies. He doesn’t kill the doctor until he becomes a threat by wielding the scalpel.  And them saying Marlene actually signed her death warrant the moment she said “let me go” because it meant she planned to try and survive her wound. There would be a tomorrow and in that tomorrow, she would try and come after them. So of course she had to die because her living meant Ellie wouldn’t be safe.

things to look at here: Joel's face when they turn around, and how it changes when he realizes what he's looking at the way they're walking so close that Ellie's touching his shirt casually, comfortably, affectionately the way he becomes a human shield and covers her body with his ouch.❤️‍🩹

I want to draw mommy Dina because I love Ellie with all my heart really but Dina truly is a pillar of strength. She took care of Ellie and JJ, she was ride or die for Ellie and I think she would’ve done all of it even if she and Ellie never got together. She also made the hard choice of moving back to Jackson instead of waiting for Ellie to come back.

This is my own headcanon but I feel like if Ellie were to come back and try and grovel for forgiveness then Dina is gonna make her work for it. I also like to believe that Dina refuses to let Ellie back into JJs life until she’s absolutely certain that Ellie won’t leave again.

I need more Dina love please send me headcanons or something I need the motivation.

I don’t know how the series will end but Ellie and Dina have to be endgame. We spent so much time with them in the second game that it’ll feel wrong to just have them end there.

idk if this makes sense. but i kind of love that the last of us makes me cry and viscerally FEEL true emotions on a weekly basis. like i cant remember the last tv show i watched that had me consistently bawling my eyes out and so immersed in a show because of the characters, the story, the incredibly strong writing, etc. and it doesn't feel manipulative. it just feels profound and beautiful and poetic but also tragic and... human.

I am so curious what the context behind these shots are, Catherines voice sounds accustory right? This could be before the whole confrontation. Maybe the town people and Maria notice how traumatized Ellie looks and connect that to Joel, prompting the "did you hurt her?" to which Joel sounds fucking distraught. Does this mean the whole conversation with Tommy doesn't happen, what does he even tell Tommy?

Is Catherine a therapist? Sounds reasonable, but why is he there. He doesn't regret saving Ellie, maybe the turmoil of having to lie to her, but I can't see Joel going there by himself, so has someone send him there? Tommy would say it but Joels stubborn, I can see Maria sending him there, she has the power, and it would be reasonable for her to not trust him, maybe that's why he's so emotional, because he's being accused of things and Catherine then is a member of the council. He is definitely being forced to be there, I feel like that second shot is him storming out after being done with whatever the conversation is about. This is straight up a crack post...

Or maybe this happens after the confrontation and Catherine is a therapist and Joel is struggeling badly, but dammit the hair is not right, cause his hair is longer after the confrontation right? Like the still we got?

being a huge fan of tlou but also like. thinking that certain stories are built for certain mediums. like the entire theme of tlou2 is grounded and fresh because it’s a railroad/story video game that still affords you mechanical choices in how you navigate the world. i just don’t have a lot of confidence that presenting that story in a tv show with the minimal adjustments that they did in s1 will be fulfilling or compelling in any comparable way. because with tlou1 some of the like. beauty of that story was simply that it was such an emotive story contained in the medium of video games. and some of that was retained just by hitting similar or expanded emotional beats in the show, like the episodes that expanded on the life of the characters and the realities of that world. but truly so much of tlou2 emotional depth and ‘why does this story matter’ rests in the fact that’s it’s your hands on the controller, continually choosing to go forward in the story and have hope that it will work out in your-as-ellie-or-abby-or-somehow-booth’s favour. and you simply cannot get that in a non-interactive medium like television. like i do think tlou2 is a good story but it’s a good story because of the investment required by the player to keep pressing buttons and keep returning and to feel the adrenaline like responses of high intensity moments and be jarringly shifted into backstories that only increase the frustration. in general i’ve been thinking a lot about cross-medium adaptation and on the one hand i am glad that season 1 makes the story of the last of us more accessible to people who wouldn’t pick up a video game but it’s also like. maybe instead we can destigmatize video games as this inaccessible and dangerous medium a bit more instead of just . implicitly agreeing . like no maybe your mom won’t pick up a video game controller and play the last of us . but maybe you can play the game in the living room. sometimes the mediums that stories are told in aren’t just important but are actually foundational parts of how the information of a story is conveyed and that’s not only okay but is fucking fantastic. we should be happy actually that there are so many ways to collect a bunch of themes and ideas and put them together and hold them out to someone else and say “won’t you consider this with me. won’t you feel these emotions and care about these characters with me.”
