as a child i hated snape with such a burning passion that when they tried to make me think that james was bullying him for no good reason i was like "snape was literally racist" and i reread the books that came before it just to see if i had missed smth and nah. james potter you will always be famous

in more seriousness, i love the marauders. i was really into fics about them back when i was a wattpad user. i even wrote a terrible god awful fic with an oc because i liked them so much. i miss that oc she was so silly and mary sue and i love her for it...

If you gave Chloe a redemption how would Zoe fit? Not Vespera just Zoe...

I discussed this in more detail here, here, and here, but canon Zoe has all the hallmarks of a Mary Sue. She shows up out of nowhere in the middle of the show and immediately becomes close to the main cast. She has no real flaws. Everyone loves her. She gets a romance arc with the main character. She's the only person other than Adrien to wield the black cat miraculous. You get the picture. She's the kind of character I expect to see as an OC in a fanfic, not an actual character in canon.

While I will defend the rights of Mary Sue's in a general sense, a Mary Sue has no place in Miraculous canon. It's the wrong type of story for an idealized self-insert that the audience can project themselves onto for many reasons, chief of them being that those types of characters only work as main characters. This makes it impossible for me to use Zoe as-is. I'd have to completely redesign her character so that she had depth and flaws and I have no interest in doing that.

It's not that I hate Zoe, it's that she has no reason to exist outside of being Chloe's perfect replacement. Take away that role and what is she even doing here? What purpose does she serve that you can't give to one of the twenty other teenage characters that canon already introduced!!! And that's not even counting the specials which introduced another three for some reason. Writers, what are you doing? Stop adding characters!!! You need depth, not breadth!!!

In theory, Zoe could be used as part of Chloe's redemption, but that would require them to have an actual bond. As best I can tell, in canon, Chloe and Zoe didn't meet until the start of season four. They're sisters in the biological sense, but that's about it. This once again makes it hard to see Zoe as value added.

If the Kwamis didn't exist and Zoe was Chloe's cool older sister, then she'd have some potential as Chloe's mentor, basically taking on the role I see Pollen in. She'd also have potential as a significantly younger sister who adores Chloe, making Chloe act nice because she wants to keep that adoration. But Zoe is none of those things. She's basically the same age as Chloe, Chloe doesn't care about her, and Adrien already fills the role of Chloe's same-age sibling who grew up in a different home, so why would she need another one?

Another theoretical path for Zoe would be to let Chloe redeem Zoe. We know that Zoe was a massive liar in the past. If she was introduced while still in that phase, then redeemed Chloe could show off her new skills by helping her sister. It would even give you a nice way to address how messed up their mother is.

As nice as that may sound, I still wouldn't go there unless Chloe was my main character. Zoe's redemption just eats up way too much screen time as you have to establish who she is, give her a relationship with Chloe, and so on. Not a quick little addition to the script and not worth the time when her only purpose is fleshing out Chloe. There's also the Sabrina issue. If Chloe is going to redeem someone, it feels silly to add a whole new character when you have an established character right there, ready and waiting. Writing wise, Sabrina feels way more like Chloe's sister than Zoe ever did so why add Zoe?

No matter what way you look at it, canon Zoe just isn't needed. There are no missing roles that she's ideally suited to fill. You'd have to totally redesign her to make her work and, at that point, you're not using Zoe, you're using an OC with the same name.

how did you create amara? she's so compelling. i'm itching to create an hotd oc (mostly for aemond tho) but i'm absolutely unable to. i grew up on the era where every female oc was called a mary sue and every time i think someone could think that of my oc i become unbearably sad. enlighten me senpai

Aaahhh the Mary Sues. Such a silly way to diss what were usually teenage writers simply trying to explore the foundational stages of creating a character. There are so many popular Gary Stus in popular media (James Bond is definitely one) but men don't get called out for it the same.

I will say it took time for me to lean into writing a character who isn't just better than me in every sense of the word, and is allowed to make her own mistakes. I have to empathise with her a lot when she does some stupid shit and I'm sitting there like girl...

The key is probably to mix the stupid shit we all do on a daily basis (and judge more harshly when done by a fictional character) with real emotions and inner thoughts that would connect to most readers. Insecurities, anxiety, etc etc. But it's important to show her wanting to get out of these pitfalls of human nature, striving to do better even when she fails. She can't be perfect and smart and sassy out the gate or there's no fun watching her become a more well-rounded person.

The most important thing about an OC isn't how she's created at the start, but how she ends up at the finish line of the journey you're taking the reader along on. Don't flesh her out too much. Give her a few key traits - habits, emotional instabilities, insecurities - and then let them expand as she interacts with Aemond. Let her be human. Rolling the eyes, smirking, and sassy comebacks are all well and good, but real people don't behave like that. Sometimes, I like to put myself in the situation and realise I would never have such a put-together response because a fic writer isn't actually writing me (unless God has something to tell me about the sham of a plotline my life currently is). Once you've figured out what you'd do in a scene where you're stuck on what to write next, then bring back all you already know about your OC and modify your own response to become hers.

I didn't plan Amara at all when I put her into Burning Jasmine. My aim was to give Aegon someone that he could call his own in a way no one else in his family was. But I also knew Aegon is a dipshit. So, their first meeting is him basically yelling at her to get him more wine and stop telling him he needs a doctor, and her immediate reaction is girl fuck you, ew. Then, he softens, because the urge to be loved always comes out in the end (see here's where canon existing does help), and then I created Amara's background with the kidnapping from Lys, and how her parents raised her with love, and understood that she would see his anger as a facet of his isolation and vulnerability, not as something independent to him that he wields like a weapon.

Also my last pointer is always going to be the same but read, read, read. I would suggest contemporary books as unlike with fantasy, they're not worldbuilding, all they have are their characters. Learn from them. Get comfortable with inner monologuing for your OC that doesn't constantly revolve around Aemond, and how she is an accessory to him. She's the main character in her head, with a whole inner world of her own, and that'll be the best way to approach it.

Family: Martin Kratt (Older brother, Chris Kratt (Second older brother), Mrs. Kratt (Mother), Mr. Kratt (Father)

Life Story: Jester was the youngest and smallest of the family but he had a loud and chaotic personality to make a name for himself. Despite his bubbly and reckless persona, he was a great, straight A student, also becoming the golden child. His parents loved the compliments and validation they got from Jester simply being talented but that wasn't enough. The Kratt parents thought it was best to sign Jester up for as many things possible, putting him up for Ballet, Art, Language Arts, and Inventing, and maybe more. Eventually, Jester found himself in a Science Camp, sharing a short-lived bond between his brothers' friend, Aviva. Both slowly started losing their connection and started to turn on each other. Then, Jester found someone who would change their life, that was Zach Varmitech, a self centered, prick who just wanted power and fame. Jester and Zach became best friends in an instant, becoming a reckless and loud duo together, often annoying Aviva but never really bullying her. They both stayed best friends even after summer camp for years until Mr. and Mrs. Kratts believed that Zach was getting in the way of their son's success. Years went by with no contact, causing Zach to almost forget Jester was a Kratt Brother. Jester, disheartened and tired of wasting his life in trying to make his parents proud, runs away without giving them a goodbye to forever hang out with his brothers and his pals.

i also love seeing people's self inserts, ocs, yumeships, rarepairs, aus, headcanons, cosplays, and roleplays!! i have my own complaints with aphverse (doesn't everyone?) but any expression of genuine love towards the series makes me way more happier than rereading the same twelve critiques endlessly.

Thanks for the ask, and first let me just say that I think all of the Vil guys are great. There isn’t a single one that I don’t like in some way or another.

Rating them on a scale of 1 - Jude……I guess I’m rating them in terms of how much I see them as LI’s, with Jude being a (10)? I won’t include Vogel because they are so new, but I will say that out of the three, I prefer: Nica, Ring and Darius. In that order.

William: Rating 5: He is such a gentleman to me, and he is sexy as hell. But, he’s simply not my villain. Will is….my bff I get manis done with and confide my life’s problems to. He’s like my psychiatrist? Still, I really appreciate how his lovers desires are important to them and encourages one to express themselves in general. I think that’s important in any relationship.

Harrison: Rating 4 - Harry is my super cool, aloof guy friend that I say hi to as I pass him by in the hall. He is sweet, hot and a total green flag sans the habitual lies, but I think it’s because he’s so green (I feel) that he’s simply not my villain. I love him in events though and how he can be a little mean to the MC. I also got emotional during his second wedding story.

Liam: Rating 6 - Meow meow. Oh my precious baby. Liam is just someone I can connect with emotionally, and he himself is so emotionally intelligent. I love how he can just pick up on things and he is often, as one of my friends who is a MAJOR Liam simp puts it, the voice of reason in the room. I honestly just fell in love with him on the first chapter and not to mention he is warped….I dig warped.

Elbert: Rating 7 - Elle is just…can I please put him in my pocket and protect him? He is so kind, tender and just precious. He doesn’t want to cause anyone pain, and I really love how protective he can be. He is quiet, soft-spoken and mellow. His presence is literally healing, and as greedy as he is, he is just as generous (I feel). Seeing him grow to the point of speaking up and putting his foot down just makes my heart swell.

Alfons: Rating 7 - Ally and I got off on the wrong foot, but I’ve come to love him. He truly cares for the MC in his very own unique way, and he is def the jelly type and I love that in f/o. But his character develops in such a wonderful way. Plus, he is fine asf. I got so emotional during his Wedding part 2 event. He’s won my heart over, so much so, that I am planning to create an OC for him eventually. Hm, maybe I should come to terms with it and bump him up to an 8?

Roger: Rating 4 - He’s a great guy! Still, Roger is very much a big brother to me. He is very insightful, fun, and totally dedicated. I wish I had a big bro like him in my life (I’m the eldest.) We'd go to the pub all the time for steak and ale.

Ellis: Ranking 9: My baby briar thorn. Oh, he is so warped, cute, sweet, selfish and I adore him. Ellis is just a very interesting character because his desires tend to conflict with each other, and as time goes on we see him grow more and more selfish and possessive, and again that is my cup of tea. He is also an extremely hard worker, has life goals and is extremely competent. Plus, I love his relationship dynamics with Harry, Roger and Jude. Seeing Ellis makes me…..happy.

Victor: Ranking 5 - Not because he isn’t mysterious, villainous, caring, silly, a Mary Sue, and drop dead gorgeous, but because I simply don’t know a ton about him. Does he lie and have secrets? Yes. Will he do anything to protect Crown? Sure. I think he has potential to rise in the LI rating department, but I need more information. One thing is for sure. I’m protective as hell over him, especially when it comes to Darius and his dislike of Vivi.

Anyway, I think each of the villains we love just clicks with us. While I was interested in Jude, I don’t think I chose Jude the day I rolled his five star card. I feel like the spiteful fairy chose me…and my wallet has been in the sweetest hell ever since.

You've been in the phandom and on tumblr for a while and i've always been curious as to if you have any takes on how it's changed over the years? or perhaps just the overall attitude towards trading has changed? if at all?

I think the changes in attitudes in the phandom and the changes in attitudes towards trading are two separate things (trading overlaps with multiple musicals and all while also having it's own separate shifts), so I'm just going to stick with changes in the phandom!

I will also note that I've only been in the phandom since around 2010, which might seem long to some but doesn't to me, because I know people who have been around at least a decade longer than that. I should also say that even though I interact with the phandom on multiple platforms, I'm not everywhere and I can't read, you know, every forum thread or every post on Tumblr. As such, there will be thinks that I'll miss, as I can only speak to what I personally witnessed on the platforms I was engaged in, because that's what I know best!

With all that said, I'm going to split this into four parts.

Attitudes towards characters. I talked about this to some extent in a recent ask about the role of Christine, but in a general sense, there's been a shift towards appreciating Christine, Raoul, the Persian, Carlotta, and other supporting characters, or at the very least, taking a more complex view of them. This also applies to Erik to a large extent, and I've also seen a trend of seeing him as less the seductive, commanding figure and more love towards him as, I dunno, a weird sewer man. Honestly I could probably devote entire asks to each of these, but suffice to say, way more love for characters other than Erik.

Attitudes towards ships and fic. I put these two together because they're so complementary, though it also ties into the above attitudes towards characters. I think it's safe to say that, just like Erik used to be the most popular character, Erik/Christine was also the most popular ship. But I've definitely seen a large swelling of love for the other ships in the last decade or so: Raoul/Christine of course, but also things like Pharoga (the Persian and the Phantom) and Firdre (Firmin/Andre), Meg/Christine or Carlotta/Christine, and many a crack ship such as Rerik (Raoul/Erik) or Erik/Mirror Bride, Erik/Therapy, or Raoul/Madame Giry (though maybe this is just from one place). OCs (Original Characters) are much more in vogue as well and I feel like people are more willing to accept ships with OCs without deriding them as Mary Sues or author wish fulfillment and what-not. I think E/C will always be the most popular ship but people are much more willing to say that they ship something that's not E/C, or even to say they don't ship it, and to write non-E/C fic without worrying about getting blasted.

Attitudes towards adaptations. Going to be honest, what prompted this was me thinking about the seismic shift in perspective towards Susan Kay's Phantom, namely that it went from "This is better than Leroux!" to "Yikes". But that's only one example of a general pattern of appreciation for other versions besides the ALW musical - Leroux for sure, especially as people start to figure out the differences, sometimes major, between translations, but also towards, say, the Yeston/Kopit musical, the David Staller musical, other film adaptations, even Love Never Dies (which I think people sort of look upon now with a fond, "Oh you, you silly trashfire musical, I love you"). In short, more love for other versions.

Social justice issues. Lastly, I think the phandom has really grown more aware of various issues within and without Phantom and its adaptations. There's a lot to cover, but just to hit a few major changes, I'd say: more discussion about the manipulation, toxicity, and abuse in Erik and Christine's relationship, much more discussion about grooming with regards to aspects of the 2004 movie, more support for racial inclusiveness in show casts as well as where adaptations tend to go wrong (see the gollywog in the ALW musical, the constant erasure of the Persian, Islamophobia and anti-Romani sentiments in various adaptations, etc.), a lot more open discussion of mental illness, ableism, and neurodiversity when it comes to various characters, discussions of characters being LGBT, and lots more. I think a lot of these things were either not discussed or just dismissed in the years before so it's really cool to see people being far more open about all this.

And there's lots, lots more I could talk about, but I'll leave it at those four major categories! Hopefully it gives you at least a broad overview of the evolution of the phandom in the last decade or so!

Okay okay back with more Bandit questions and observations now!!! Hi!!! First off, what's the model of his gun? Literally just curious, really doesn't mean anything unless I feel like drawing it lmao. Secondly, what's his thoughts on the people in power/the guardians + the queen (I'm lumping the Judge into the guardians)? You said he won't work when he can survive well on his own, but does his dislike stretch out to even wishing harm on the guardians? Actually, does he know if a guardian dies, their Zone dies, too? How knowledgeable is he on the world of OFF's lore and how it functions?? Thirdly, does he have any friends I should know about? You drew him interacting with Project Goldfinch/Just Finch to break up the text in my first ask, what's their relationship? Does Bandit scam him to hell and back, or do they just casually chat every now and then? Fourthly, I VERY BRIEFLY checked out Ask Bandit and here are some observations I made: Uno, how come you ship him with Red from Animal Crossing? Is it cuz they both steal and resell?? If so, that's hilarious and I love your sense of humor. Dos, when drawing him with Elsen 7 I did not know Bandit currently resides in Zone Three, because 7 lives in Zone One. This whole time I was under the impression he travels through Zones for some reason lol? I guess that's my curse of having a handful of ECU Elsen that do that themselves lmao. Last but not least, not something Ask Bandit related, just generally speaking, would you like to see any future doodles I make of Bandit, whether he's interacting with my own OCs or otherwise? I modeled Bandit's gun after a Glock?? Kinda?? I didn't really reference a specific model, more like loosely inspired. I probably should create a prop-reference for it, but I haven't yet.

Bandit's dislike for authority does not stretch to wanting to take out the guardians. It would be counter-intuitive to his role as a merchant to kill off his customers by killing off the guardians. Bandit cares too much about profit, and although the guardians are annoying, without them he wouldn't have profit.

Bandit is fully aware on how the world of OFF works, it's inner workings, and other meta things.

Bandit will say anyone is his friend, even if they clearly hate him. Louis would be the only one that would truly think of Bandit as a friend (except maybe my elsen-sona, but they're a mary-sue type oc and should probably not be counted if we're talking in-universe/story lol)

As Finch is the protagonist in my game concept, Bandit will be the merchant selling them items. Finch is distrusting of Bandit, but sees him as a necessity in their mission. I do have an idea where Bandit does steal something from Finch to propel the plot, but who knows if that'll stay in the final lol

Bandit x Redd is a joke ship created by @brandy-elsen (tagging the account it was posted on and not your current account because I do not wanna waste a tag on this I am sorry Brandy AHHSGFG). All the credits to her for the comedic genius. I think you guessed right as to why that ship exists tho. I just drew it for that post because it met the "two pieces of fanart" criteria I set.

Bandit travels the zones, your initial assumption was right. He is only in Zone 3 on the askbandit blog because of the story being told on there. He's gotta refill his stock of sugar manually since sugar happens to be one of the things he cannot magically pull from his pack.
