july 5th, 1978 was pierced with a shriek.

“name her portia, like the car. ‘always wanted a porsche.” he says it like it was the babies fault.

simone looks up, rocking the crying baby back and forth in the crook of her arm. the hospital room drowned in the smell of sweat and blood.

“portia rae..” simone says softly, her mind fuzzy with blood loss and exhaustion. “little portia rae.”

born july 5th, 1978. portia rae was born in a small hospital on the outskirts of town to teenaged parents laurence & simone jones. this baby, swaddled in hand knitted blankets the catalyst to their relationship.

a six year old portia had learnt quickly that babies truly do ruin lives. a blurry, almost distorted image of father storms out through their tattered screen door and simone does little to stop him. portia thinks her mother saw it coming long ago.

“he’ll come back,” simone curses.

he doesn’t come back. no phone calls or post cards either. but portia had long forgotten about the father she never got to know.

1984 marks the rapid decline of simone jones. portia would often say her mother died the day that man walked out the door.

the year 1984 smells like alcohol and cigar ash. it looks like different men coming in and out of the same screen door her dad left out of. portia doesn’t think him leaving affected her mother that much because she moved on in less than a few months and a six year old portia had to find other things to keep her occupied because their rinky trailer was off limits at certain hours.

portia goes door to door to ask unsuspecting families if their kids would like to play with her. most of them say no until she finally gets to the door six trailers from hers. natalie scatorrcio peeks her head out the crack in the door, little brown hairs sticking up and her eyes narrowed and squinted, as if portia was suspect.

“hi, my name’s portia. my mommy’s busy.. do you wanna play? i have barbies,” portia says, holding up three barbies, they were the expensive kind.

the little brunette girl looks behind her and then back at portia, “okay.. sure. i have another friend, next door. her name’s van, she can play with us too. my name’s natalie by the way.. but everyone calls me nat.” nat smiles, portia does too.

natalie’s grubby hands bang against the palmer’s screen door and a little red head girl stumbles out the door with a wide grin on her face. she’s missing one of her front teeth and her face is littered with freckles. “hiya, nat. who’s that?” the girl says as if portia isn’t right there.

“portia. she’s our friend now.”

“oh, cool. i’m van!”

“hi, van. i’m portia!”

portia would never have friends quite like natalie and van again, those girls were one of a kind.

portia is #3 on the whs yellowjackets and she plays a mean defense. she never particularly enjoyed sports or all the sweat that came with it, but soccer was a way to get away from her mom.

who to no shock, had fallen deeper and deeper into the bottom of a beer bottle.

when jackie scores the winning goal and their shot to nationals, portia practically jumps on van, nat quick to come over and join their rather emotional group hug.

her fingers dug into the soil, no tears to spill because she had hardly registered what was happening. it was as if her body was working on autopilot to protect itself. the girls pretty quickly settle into their roles of the wilderness.

portia takes on the role as a pseudo medic alongside misty. she takes on what little sewing skills she has to make blankets and mismatch patterned clothes to keep the others warm once the winter hits.

during the spring portia helps akilah with the animals, but really she’s just seeking the warmth their fuzzy coats give her. once shauna butchers them and peels back their fur which is coated in red, portia washes it in the lake to be worn once the cold comes back around.
