The new Defunctland video “Journey to EPCOT Center: A Symphonic History” is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. I’m so blown away. Kevin Perjurer is a master storyteller & documentarian. The man is an artist. Everyone that worked on this video is an artist.

im just feeling amazed at the internet and how anyone can make a story and then a whole multiverse can grow from it, so many different ideas and au's and gorgeous things and memories. you can practically build an entire universe right inside your head.

Creativity is a rotten thing.

I meet them in the office sometimes, though their schedule is rarely consistent. No matter the project, time of day or year, or how many messages I leave on their answering machine, they continue to appear in only the most random of places. I once found them in the grocery story, nestled between ripe tomatoes, humming a little tune to themselves.

When they do appear at the office, they rarely help. Always off topic, talking about the latest book they read or the next movie they want to see. My coffee often goes cold while I try to keep them on task. Though I can’t prove it, I also suspect they are stealing the staples from my stapler. My thoughts and papers are left in an absolute mess with no way to join them. Sometimes, they rearrange the folders on my computer as well. They give them funny names and place them in different spots, inevitably leading to lost files and restarted work. The names make me smile. By the time everything it back in its proper place, my coffee is cold again and I get up to make another pot.

Creativity is a messy thing. Once glance in their office reveals stacks of mismatched papers and notes. A computer screen that flickers and a careful arrangement of half empty pens litter their workspace. There’s genius in there… somewhere. If one could connect the scattered notes and discordant thoughts, I know they would find something truly special. In flashes of inspiration, I’ve seen creativity create things that steal away my breath and spark awe in my mind. Then, they disappear for another week. I find them tucked away between the treadmills and the weight rack at the gym.

Yes, creativity is a fickle, rotten thing. Never on time. Always unorganized. Endlessly frustrating.

And yet.

I wouldn’t wish them any different. The office would be quite boring without them.

I love creativity.

How to Stop Hating Everything You Write

1. Don't be afraid of making mistakes.

Quit judging yourself for every mistake you make along the way. Whether you're writing fiction, fanfiction, or nonfiction, just write. If you can't correct your errors as you go, that's okay. When I don't have the brainpower to multitask, I focus on the writing stage one step at a time. Just write!

2. Don't aim for perfection.

"It's not ready if it's not perfect." That's a lie. When you're in the process of writing, it's best to concentrate on getting your thoughts on paper.

3. Seek feedback and learn to receive it.

Join lively communities with active writers or forums that host events inviting writers to share their work for critique. Not every critique is constructive; learn to discern which feedback to take on board and which to ignore.

4. Read, read, read.

You can't give what you don't have. You learn a lot from reading similar pieces in your chosen genre. Reading is also a source of inspiration that fuels your writing process.

5. Cut yourself some slack.

Writing is no small feat. It takes talent to formulate a story with your mind and skill to visualize it for others to see. Do you love writing? Then keep doing it because it takes practice.
