I watched the episode of House of Mouse where its the Christmas special and Pete's in and that got me thinking-

I cannot remember if you've already made a post regarding Christmas at the HoM, so consider this in September:

Since it's implied Christmas doesn't exist in TW, let's say Yuu starts making gingerbread cookies out of habit. And after that, she is halfway through the pudding when she realises that Christmas, in fact, has never been brought up before amongst her friends.

A quick check later and she leaves the pudding to set while wondering where she's going to find the occasion to give her friends holiday treats.

So sometime before Christmas she brings the cookies and pudding over to the HoM after wrapping them up fancy for her work family-

Only for Pluto to flaunt his special sugar-free gingerbread biscuits in full view of the villains' table.

And then Maleficent calls Yuu over to ask where did Pluto get such cute cookies with pine trees piped all over them-

Yuu, most likely: 'I made them myself for Christmas :). But Christmas doesn't exist in TW, so I couldn't think up a special occasion to give my friends Christmas treats :(. Especially considering all the effort that went into the cookies :( Jamil wouldn't call that cost-effective :(

Jafar is internally cursing out his protege, while Maleficent and the Queen of Hearts immediately start trying to convince her to make their twisted versions cookies :) and only their versions :) no, shove off mal, she's going to make dear riddle cookies that don't break any rules whatsover :) not your grandson :) sod off you hag :)

Anyway, I was going to add something about a kiss under the mistletoe but it's not even November yet so I'll save it until then

Wow, I am loving these House of Mouse!AU asks. Life has been crazy these past few months so coming back to Tumblr to see that people are still interested in this really makes me smile 🥰

I remember writing something about that special last year that was kind of similar to what you said - I love the fan trope where our/Yuu's world's holidays/traditions don't exist in twst. The angst and fluff potential is just so good (I remember there was this one episode of Winx Club where the fairies try to cheer Bloom up by having a christmas party but they misunderstand everything and Stella interprets 'christmas cheer' as 'a christmas cheer' like the type cheerleaders do and I feel like that's the kind of endearing shenanigans you'd get in NRC)

I think that's what makes the House of Mouse so neat - it's kind of like a best of both worlds situation where there is a mix of both fantastical Disney magic and parts of our world (so Yuu can feel more at home, in a way)

Okay but back when I was in another fandom, I wrote a christmas themed drabble where a character made personalised gingerbread people for his entire class where he decorated each biscuit to look like them and I think that's definitely something Yuu would do (as well as the usual christmas themed ones, of course - she likes to go all out like that)

But yes, I see the shippers using this as a way to sail their ship. Yes, of course they want to throw a christmas celebration as a way to make Yuu happy - but it wouldn't hurt if they indulged in some light trickery now would it. Cue cartoon shenanigans where everyone is sabotaging each other, leading to total chaos and a Yuu that is both frazzled and totally oblivious.

"C'mon, Jaffy - just 'cause your little protege doesn't appreciate Yuu doesn't mean you have to ruin things for us. Where's your christmas spirit?"

"You don't even celebrate christmas!"

"Neither do you!"

Not to mention all of the animal companions that want special christmas treats as well (much to Pluto's irritation and obvious jealousy)

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!

Rex

He is obsessed with the lights. And the pretty decorations. Everything pretty about christmas basically.

Rex is obsessed with the pretty-ness of the snow. But only to look at! No touch. 

Gets everyone really nice gifts and makes pudding.

Obsessed with older Christmas films like Holiday Inn and stuff.

Idk why.

On Christmas Day he’s up at his normal time and makes a coffee and drinks it before doing anything.

Fives

An actual fucking child.

Bro’s fav part is the gifts, and we all know it.

He loves kind of comedy-Christmas films.

I think first Christmas was when he gave everyone their hoodies but from then on, he gets like food or sweets for everyone.

He’s the first up on Christmas.

Boi falls down the stairs trying to race down, but he does wait for the others to arrive before unwraps his gifts. Impatiently. He waits impatiently.

Gives out free hot chocolate for the day.

Although he doesn’t really like to admit it, he likes the subtly romantic-Christmas films.

He buys everyone books and writes a message on the front page for them.

He loves the peaceful and beautiful side of Christmas. He 100% goes to the Church and listens to the carols even though he’s so not religious. 

Gave cards to like, basically everyone. Like, those cheap ones you buy at the fuckin post office but then he writes like a beautiful paragraph for every person.

Holds a snowball-fight that ended up including like 90% of the town.

Kix still worked on Christmas Eve, but not on the day.

THAT Harry Styles is certainly getting all lovey-dovey with his new girlfriend. The One Direction Romeo took American superstar Taylor Swift to meet his mum after treating her to a meal at his local village pub on Tuesday night.

And yesterday they fed doves and swans together on a visit to a Lake District beauty spot.

Harry pulled out all the stops to impress multi Grammy award-winner Taylor on her visit.

After treating her to a slap-up meal at The Rising Sun in Derbyshire’s Peak District, the pair made their way home to his mum Anne – via Tesco.

At the supermarket, 18-yearold Harry splashed out £3.89 on a tub of VO5 hair styling wax while Taylor wandered down the aisles looking at the vegetables.

Last night pub manager Sarah Walker revealed the celebrity couple met up with Harry’s sister, Gemma, and her boyfriend at their local in Hope Valley.

Pub regular Gemma strolled in at 7.30pm just before Harry and Taylor arrived in his Range Rover Sport. After ordering a round of soft drinks, they sat in the window, next to the crackling log fire.

There truly are so many good episodes of Tokyo Mew Mew. I'll share some of my favorites under the cut. (Mew Mew Power mention in here too because I won't ever shut up about the English dub).

These will be in order of episode numbers! *cracks knuckles*

I feel that I am not the best with explaining ~why~ I am a fan of something and think my vocabulary is lacking (that is what I get for not reading huh 😔) -- so I'll mainly post screenshots and go: *point* "I like that!" or just type whatever thoughts come to mind when I think about the episodes.

Episode 10 and 11

Grouped together because these go hand-in-hand. These are the episodes where the girls find the final member of their team, Zakuro Fujiwara. She has no intention of joining them in episode 10 (lone wolf ™) but does swing around and joins the girls in episode 11.

Sorry to Mint but the animation when she has her soul crushed is amazing.

Mew Mew Power is especially funny for this scene because the 4Kids dub made Renee (aka Zakuro) say: "I don't need you guys, you're all freaks!" GIRL! What do you mean? You're one too. 🤨

Episode 12

THE TREE EPISODE!!!! Kishigo battle angst.

Aoyama also has so many "standing man emoji" moments in this series and they make me chuckle. The part of the episode where he sees Ichigo as a Mew Mew for the first time (and it's so early on in the series too!!) will never not be a "🧍🏻‍♂️" moment to me.

Episode 18 and 19

Pretty much every two part episode is one of my favorites. These two are no exception. Blue Knight vs Kisshu fight scene.

Episode 21

Mint goes rogue. We see Zakuro do this throughout the series but to see another Mew do the same is all the more refreshing. This is also the closest thing I'll ever get to an "evil" mew mew (a magical girl trope I think about often, and one I wish happened in TMM..) so I like the episodes where they go against (or away I guess) from the rest of the team for that reason.

Episode 25 and 26

Tokyo Tower! Poison moth!! Someone save us!!!

Not only because of the animation but just in general... episode 25 has one of my MOST favorite scenes in the entire series. There is this part where Kisshu is laughing in Ichigos face after the Blue Knight makes his exit. Kisshu is basically like 'ya'll are so cooked!' and it gets extremely quiet when Ichigo says "I won't let you" for the first time and all we hear is the rain in the background.

Ichigo is always standing up for herself in TMM (a quality that I lack in real life, lol) and I think that is why I appreciate/look up to her character so much.

Goose bumps whenever I watch this scene (yes in MMP too).

Episode 35

Soft side of Zakuro. Episode 35 was great for chill Zak moments. She saw herself a lot in this kid.

Everyone and their dog talks about when Zakuro punches Kisshu in the face. I remember watching this part a lot when I was younger and it's definitely a great moment for sure. I love Kisshu but I do like when he gets his shit rocked too.

It's cringe to get your face punched in by a wolfgirl. =/

Episode 37 and 38

Christmas episodes!! + This part specifically.

The whole alien vs human talks in these episodes. 👍👍

Ichigo was filled with so much emotion during this part. Go girl!!

Episode 39

Emo Kishigo angst truthers ™, this episode was made specifically for us. The way this one had an absolute CLUTCH on me. I have watched it an ungodly amount of times.

Dude needs medical attention immediately but he is bleeding out on the rooftops brooding instead, nice.

I love poking fun at Kisshu but the rooftop scene is actually so sad to me. AND.. YA'LL.. THE OST DURING THIS PART?! HELLO!! (x) This track is on repeat in my brain and it never stops.

(I also really like that screencap of Pie going "Tokyo Mew Mew, Die!")

Episode 40

Pudding was my favorite mew growing up so episode 40 makes it as apart of one of my favorites for sure.

I appreciate all of the girls, and while Pudding is not my favorite character from the series today, she is literally the connection between how I met some of good online (and now also irl) friends, LOL.

More unhinged Kisshu. He has a really insane good laugh in this episode.

Episode 49

BOY HOWDY do I love Pie in this episode. Kisshu talks about not relying on//betraying Deep Blue (basically their Jesus in the series) and Pie CANNOT BELIEVE WHAT HE IS HEARING. He is a loyal to DB and he is pissed about it.

After all they've been through together on their planet and earth.... this conversation ends so cold with Pie going "The next time we meet, we might be enemies..." and when Tart leaves with Kisshu, even he is conflicted.

Episode 50, 51 and 52

Just grouping the last 3 together. We are introduced to the Big Cheese (Deep Blue) in these final episodes.

(The father, the son and the holy spirit respectively.)

Episode 51 has some of the best animation.

December 8: Sweets (Senator Kimara Cretak x GN!Reader)

“And, what did you say this was called again?” Kimara asked as she sat, slightly wide-eyed, at your mother’s kitchen table, the few brown crumbs dusting her lips begging you to kiss them off.

You laughed and wiped your floured hands on the towel slung over your shoulder before taking a seat across from her, the Christmas platter of shaped cookies resting between you.

“Gingerbread,” you reminded her.

“It is… spicy,” she murmured, reaching for another Human man-shaped cookie. “But also sweet.” She studied it intently before gingerly taking a bite.

She nodded thoughtfully. “This is excellent,” she mumbled around the cookie in her mouth.

More of your laughter bubbled over – while you never imagined you’d refer to a Romulan partner as “adorable”, Kimara’s curiosity was endearing and it made her all the more lovely to you.

You knew, of course, about the Senator’s penchant for sweets. In the time you’d known her, she’d never passed up an opportunity to try a new confection. She’d actually introduced you to jumja sticks after you’d arrived on Deep Space 9.

But being back in your family home on Earth for Christmas meant introducing Kimara to scads of novel, handmade Terran desserts – so far, there’d been some hits and some misses. She wasn’t a fan of sweet potato pie, which you’d lamented dramatically, or peanut butter fudge. But she’d eaten enough lemon bars to make herself sick and was “delighted” by the lightness of your profiteroles. Gingerbread, it would seem, was another hit.

“I’m glad you like it,” you offered. “It’s a pretty traditional Christmas dessert, around here anyway.”

A loud clinking carried across the kitchen as your mother entered, carrying a tilting stack of ceramic casserole dishes. She swore loudly as she caught her hip on the corner of the counter and dumped the pile of pans on the countertop in annoyance.

“I’m fixin’ to make my famous banana puddin’, Kimmy,” she divulged, leaning against the counter with one hand on her hip. You snorted lightly at your mother’s diminutive nickname for your dignified, Senate office-holding partner. Kimara glanced between you and your mother, her eyes still wide.

“Bananas are a sweet, custardy kind of fruit – and in banana pudding, you slice up bananas and layer them with cream and crispy vanilla cookies,” you filled in.

“And mine’s the best,” your mother added, fluffing her hair a bit. “Won the blue ribbon at the holiday bake-off for the last three years.”

“That sounds like an exceptional accomplishment,” Kimara replied earnestly, and you reached for her hand over the table to give it a squeeze. Her kindness never ceased to amaze you – it was unexpected from someone who’d previously described the Romulans’ “well-earned” arrogance to you.

“I look forward to trying it,” she added with a respectful incline of her head.

“Oh, you’re too sweet, Kimmy.” Your mother flushed and began making a racket as she shuffled her dishes around and started setting out ingredients.

A timer sounded from beside the oven and you ruefully pulled yourself from your Senator’s grasp to pull your thumbprint cookies out of the oven. Navigating around your mother’s chaos in the kitchen, you set your cookies to cool and poured a cup of tea each for you and Kimara. As you turned toward the table, you spotted her finishing her third gingerbread cookie and chided her softly.

“You’ll make yourself sick again,” you warned around a grin, setting the cups on the table and seating yourself beside your partner. 

This time you couldn’t help it, leaning in to kiss away the specks of gingerbread clinging to her soft lips, your eyes fluttering closed as she kissed you back, spice and sparks crackling to life between you.

Just whatever my papa thinks is cutest on his little doll (me) =w= BUTTTTT!!!! I do draw myself in the teeniest tiniest pigtails mostly!!! OwO

With my sibbies anything like games n stuff to play together!! And we would have matching outfits!!! And we could do a sleepover too!! (Me n my papa live together so every day is the bestest sleepover!) Anything would be okay with me as long as it's super fun with cute clothes!! :D

If they only knew what was really going on here, we would have all been fired long ago. My eyes lifted as I saw y/n approaching with two puddings and sitting next to me.

She had just scolded me moments ago, and now she was handing me a pudding. A broad grin spread across my face as I accepted the pudding. "I love you too," I said joyfully as y/n handed me a spoon.

Y/n rolled her eyes but smiled slightly. She opened her pudding. "You have to be careful, Yuna," she said softly. She sighed as she looked out the window.

"You're the youngest, but even you are sexualized... I don't want that to happen. None of you should be sexualized," she said, taking a bite of her yogurt. She sighed again.

"Your fans and even your haters... they analyze everything to know more about you. They don't even do it on purpose. They just want to know more about you... but it can backfire," she added.

I smiled faintly. She didn't like giving me or anyone else such a lecture. She took a deep breath again. "Just one situation... if it's misinterpreted," she began, but stopped as her phone suddenly rang.

She looked at me. She apologized slightly and answered the call. I watched her intently. She had a smile on her lips, but it disappeared shortly after. Her forehead creased. "I'll check right away," she said and hung up.

I saw her open TikTok and search for 'Itzy's manager.' I moved closer as she watched all the videos about how JYP mistreated Itzy. As she scrolled further, my eyes widened.

There was a video of y/n looking annoyed at that girl at the airport, ignoring Ryujin at the airport, then flipping off an interviewer near the van, and also glaring angrily at Yeji before Yeji got into the van.

It was also written that Itzy's manager is a real bitch and treats Itzy very poorly. My eyes fell on the number of likes, and it had over a hundred thousand likes.

"What are they talking about?" I asked, visibly upset about this video. I had long forgotten about my pudding as I looked at y/n's face. She remained calm, showing no reaction. She then clicked on the comments.

"No. You told us never to read the comments!" I exclaimed, my eyes widening as I saw that y/n wasn't listening to me. I heard y/n swallow.

There were many English comments, and I could decipher most of them. The words 'bitch,' 'fire,' 'abuse,' and who knows what else were mentioned frequently.

Y/n continued scrolling, and there was another video where y/n was wearing Ryujin's cap. Or at least it looked exactly the same. The caption mentioned that they were probably dating.

Y/n took a deep breath and put her phone away. She closed her eyes for a while before opening them again and continuing to eat her pudding.

"How can you be so calm?" I asked, visibly agitated. I had even stood up from the couch. My mouth was open, and my forehead was furrowed. Y/n looked up at me and smiled gently.

"I know what happened, and you know it too. That's enough for me," she replied, and my eyebrows raised. Surprised by her response, I looked at her for a few seconds. Was she... indifferent to the hate?

I sighed softly and nodded my head. She was right... It was all misinformation... So I sat back down next to her.

"Oh, don't say anything to the others. They don't need to know, understood?" she asked, now looking at me with a slightly more serious expression. I swallowed nervously and nodded my head.

"But Unnie," I said. She blinked in surprise and then laughed, "Since when do you call me Unnie?" she asked, lightly nudging my arm. That made me laugh too.

That's right. I only called the others Unnie when I wanted something. Or when the camera was on.

"Are you really okay?" I asked, and y/n nodded her head. She also gently stroked my head, a soft smile on her lips. "Of course. You don't need to worry about me. But thank you for caring," I heard her say.

I smiled faintly and immediately rested my head on her shoulder. "Can we... do a Vlive together?" I asked softly, knowing the answer already.

Y/n laughed and shook her head. I sighed and rolled my eyes. Why was she just our manager? She could have debuted with us!

"Oh... that one video... are you dating Ryujin? I mean... you two are really close," I said as I lifted my head from her shoulder. Y/n's eyes widened as she looked at me in shock.

"Exactly. I'd like to know that too," suddenly I heard someone say. Yeji had just entered through the door, her sports bag on her shoulder, which she immediately dropped to the floor.

Almost immediately, y/n tensed up next to me. Confused, I furrowed my brow. I watched as Yeji grinned and approached us, sitting right next to y/n. Their legs almost touching.

I looked at y/n, who blushed slightly. Yeji simply smiled as she looked at y/n. "N-No, Ryujin and I are not dating," she answered, visibly nervous as she started to laugh.

My eyes widened knowingly. "Then... you two?" I asked, and even Yeji looked surprised now. But I only looked at y/n. The older one laughed nervously again, "N-No," she answered, sounding intimidated.

My forehead furrowed as I hummed, "But I really think Ryujin is dating someone... I heard a woman's voice in her room last night. Couldn't identify who it was though," I hummed as my eyes turned back to the door.

The other three were just arriving. Ryujin's eyes widened, "A woman's voice?" Lia asked, and I nodded my head.

I looked at the remaining Itzy members and smiled. My eyes fell on Ryujin, who sat right next to me as Yuna got up to get something to drink.

Surprised, I looked at her but just smiled. "So? Who is the voice? Are you really dating someone?" Lia asked, her eyes narrowing into slits as she turned to Ryujin with evident interest.

Suddenly, I felt a hand on my thigh. My eyes widened as I looked at Yeji. However, she didn't look at me. She simply had her hand on my thigh while looking at her phone, her jaw slightly tense.

Uh-oh... She was angry.

"N-No, I'm single," Ryujin said, defensively raising her hands. Ryujin's face visibly flushed as she nervously giggled. Her eyes turned to me. I just smiled.

"I'm single," Ryujin said, much more seriously, looking at me. I swallowed slightly as I nodded.

No one could know that I was the woman in the room... Unfortunately, Yeji could already guess.

I swallowed as I felt Yeji's hand slide up my inner thigh. My body automatically tensed up.

"Uh... guys?" I heard Yuna say from the bathroom. With wide eyes, she emerged from the bathroom, holding something in her hand. Almost immediately, my eyes widened. My heartbeat seemed to stop.

"Who... among you is taking birth control pills?" Yuna asked as she looked at each of us. My breath hitched. Yeji and Ryujin immediately looked at me. Both of them knew that I had started taking them. After all... Both of them always came inside me.

My mouth opened as my entire face blushed. "T-That's mine," I said, embarrassed, as I got up from the couch and took the pills. Immediately, I went to my bag, but I saw my birth control pills in my bag.

Confused, I looked down. However, Lia slowly raised her hand. "T-These are mine," Lia said, and I looked at her with wide eyes. My mouth hung open as I simply stared at her for a while.

"Oh... I... oh," I simply said as I handed her the pills. We both laughed nervously. "But aren't you lesbian? Why do you need the pills?" Yuna asked, visibly confused.

My heartbeat accelerated at this question. Yeji looked visibly amused, a small smirk on her lips. She enjoyed seeing me like this. Ryujin seemed to enjoy it too. She always teased everyone around us, especially me.

"Oh, maybe she has acne or something. It's supposed to help with that," Chae said, and I nodded in relief. "Exactly! That's why!" I immediately replied, but Lia looked at me. A knowing grin on her lips.

But then my head turned to Lia. "Jisu, is that your reason too?" I asked, and Lia shook her head. My eyes widened in astonishment at her honesty. She smiled, embarrassed.

"He's an old friend of mine... nothing serious, but... I have feelings for him," Lia said, and my head was spinning. I was happy for her, but the manager in me also started to worry.

"How old is he?" Chae asked, visibly interested. She smiled happily for her friend. "He's 25," Lia answered as she finally sat back down. Ryujin patted the spot next to her, indicating for me to sit down as well.

"But back to the topic at hand! Ryujin... who was that woman in your room then?" Yuna asked, taking a sip of her glass of water. Her eyes fixed.

Ryujin chuckled nervously. "T-There was no one," Ryujin replied, and then she grinned and looked at me. My eyes visibly widened.

Yeji next to me let out a quiet snort. Her jaw was slightly tense as she continued to stare at her phone. Her hand was on the backrest of the couch, right behind my head.

I swallowed. "What? Me? Yesterday?" I asked as I pondered for a moment. "No, I don't think so," I replied as calmly as possible. But I was nervous. Yeji remained silent the whole time, not saying a word. She just stared at her phone.

I knew it exactly... She was jealous... Or angry... Or both!

I took a deep breath. "But I should go now. I still have a lot to do for tomorrow. Enjoy your day off today, and tomorrow morning, we'll start exploring America," I said cheerfully as I clapped my hands together.

The Snowman (ZX Spectrum) 

Developed/Published by: David Shea/Quicksilva Released: 1984 Completed: 12/12/2024 Completion: Built a snowman! Well, near enough anyway. 

Do people who aren’t British know The Snowman? It just struck me as I began to write this that one of the most ubiquitous symbols of Christmas, an animated film based on Raymond Briggs’ wordless children’s book (although the book doesn’t feature Christmas at all, and Briggs himself considered “dragging in” Christmas “a bit corny and twee”) is probably as foreign to people outside the UK as, uh… Bernard And The Genie.

I might be wrong, and if it is unknown, it’s not for want of trying, as for most of the film’s life it featured an introduction from only David bloody Bowie, implying that the film–in which a wee ginger haired boy goes on an adventure with a Snowman and meets Santa before, well, what happens to snowmen happens–was something that happened in his past. Which makes me imagine that at some point Santa was watching the telly and he was like “hang on… this Ziggy Stardust fella… looks like that wee boy that I gave a scarf once…”

Anyway, I suppose none of that especially matters. For context, all you really need to know is that The Snowman is played in the UK every Christmas… and I don’t give a fuck about it.

Which at first glance is probably a bit weird, as I’m a huge Raymond Briggs fan. As a child, I had a copy of Fungus The Bogeyman, which features an absolutely bonkers amount of world-building for a children’s book, and which disgusted me yet I endlessly poured over it. I loved his grumpy Father Christmas, particularly when he went on holiday… and has anyone ever created something like When The Wind Blows? He is an absolutely unique artist, one who should be forever celebrated.

The thing about The Snowman is… it is twee. In fact, it’s soppy. Bloody soppy, and I don’t think you can argue when you consider its most famous sequence involves a flying sequence while a boy soprano warbles out the song “Walking In The Air.”

To this day, I do not know how anyone can hear this song and not immediately want to stop listening to it. It is like nails on a blackboard to me, and really the only thing I’ll give The Snowman is that it’s led to a couple of great Irn Bru adverts.

But look, it’s all a matter of personal preference, and it’s pretty unlikely that they’re going to start showing When The Wind Blows every Christmas. At least Briggs is remembered.

What isn’t remembered, I’d say, is this: the ZX Spectrum, C64 and MSX game based specifically on his book (a quirk of the rights.) I would have assumed that this was going to be some sort of snowman fly-em-up considering it’s the thing about The Snowman everyone knows and we’ve had endless Santa fly-em-ups by this point, but instead it’s a… single screen platformer!

It’s not quite a BurgerTime, but it puts me in mind of it (I’m sure there’s a better point of comparison, though). As the “boy” (David Bowie???) you are trying to construct the Snowman by running around the level, grabbing up piles of snow (or snowman clothes) and then dropping them off on a specific platform. You can’t jump and if you run off the end of a platform you die (er, fall back into bed?) so it’s really more of a maze-chase game. On the first level, you’re being chased by flames which don’t hurt you but melt any snow you’re carrying, but on the second and third stages there are “sleep monsters” who kill you on contact. On the fourth it’s back to flames, and then the game loops with a different level layout. Oh, and on the levels where the enemies can’t kill you, the challenge is getting it all done before you starve to death, as you have a timer counting down that you can only reset by eating the turkeys and Christmas puddings that randomly appear. Though as you’re playing David Bowie, it does feel like you should be subsisting on cocaine and red peppers…

Falling to your, uh, sleep.

As far as an adaptation of a beloved (but less beloved than its TV adaptation) book, it’s a bit like adapting The Hobbit and making the entire game about Bilbo Baggins making his breakfast before the dwarves show up–there’s really no relation to it at all. This is most egregious when you manage to complete a level, because the game plays a bleepy rendition of Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer because, of course, they didn’t have the rights to Walking In The Air. I don’t even like Walking In The Air and it feels wrong. (“They couldn’t get Little Drummer Boy?”--Bowie Ed.]

And as a game The Snowman is… not good. Maybe the play is smoother on the C64 or the MSX, but it suffers the classic issue of an old home computer game: you need pixel perfect positioning to get off a ladder. I mean literally, if you’re a pixel off in one or another direction, you won’t get off, and as the enemies in this are pretty relentless, it leads to a lot of frustration.

There are other issues–the inconsistent pickup placement is a nightmare. Food often doesn’t show up in a timely manner, and it’s a bad sign when the game only feels bearable when the snow you’re trying to pick up is placed right next to the place where you drop it off and it’s miserable when it’s repeatedly on the other side of the screen but you’re unable to dodge the flames or sleep monsters. The design is simply too punitive to feel fun.

I’d imagine that for most players who got this it lasted as long as the titular snowman before it never got loaded up again, though I was surprised to see there was a freeware PC remake, though quite notably they add the ability to throw snowballs at enemies to try and make it more playable which is pretty damning, honestly. And looks so unlike the Raymond Briggs art I can’t take it seriously! On the Speccy, at least, you can use your imagination.

Will I ever play it again? Definitely not.

Final Thought: I don’t have the same kind of amazing revelations about the development of this as I did for Special Delivery: Santa’s Christmas Chaos, but I can’t help but remark that this was designed by David Shea, who has worked on a ton of stuff across the years but also developed… The Thompson Twins Adventure! One of the very few games ever released on a record (and a freebie flexi disc, no less.) So not only did he design a game where you play David Bowie (well maybe) he designed one where you play, uh, The Thompson Twins. I dunno about you, but I’m impressed.

last book: 2024 hasn't been much of a reading year for me (and it's almost over too lol), so... ooof. Which one was it again? The Betrayals by Bridget Collins if I'm not mistaken. It was an entertaining read, tho I didn't enjoy the plot twist about one of the MCs.

last movie: The Talented Mr. Ripley (tho I had to consult my viewing history to be able to answer that one)

sweet/spicy/savory: savory for main dishes, but I do love sweets as well (also waffles, pancakes - the German interpretation, not the American, but vegan, pls and thank you - semolina pudding). Still, if I were to have sweet dishes for lunch or dinner too often, I'd grow sick of them.... Spicy food... rn, my stomach isn't the biggest fan of that, but would looove to eat some delicious Thai curry again as soon as I can 'get away with it' again :D

Have you ever seen the George C Scott one? Wasn't bad but not a particularly great Scrooge, but really good Tiny Tim, fantastic Ghost of Christmas-Yet-To-Come and probably the best Marley ever put to film.

I have now! It was already on my list, because at least two or three other people have mentioned it, and I've finally finished it.

Thoughts:

When it comes to atmosphere and mood, this is my favorite so far. It's so cozy and Christmassy and has all the vibes I love from the best '80s shows and period dramas.

That '80s atmosphere comes with some weird '80s computer effects, which is both unsettling and endearing.

Scott's Scrooge is charming--too much so. I like him from the beginning. He seems less like a harsh, disgusting miser and more like someone's grouchy but genial businessman uncle who just goes too far with his jokes. Like, the way he laughs through, "Every idiot who goes about with Merry Christmas on his lips should be boiled in his own pudding and buried with a stake of holly in his heart," makes it seem like he doesn't really believe that, but is getting carried away with his own joke. It seems like he just needs a minor attitude adjustment rather than a complete character reformation, which makes him not really Scrooge.

I don't remember what I thought of Marley one way or the other.

I loved that they included the fireplace tiles with the Bible scenes.

I didn't much care for this version of the Ghost of Christmas Past.

This is the only version I've seen that includes Scrooge rhapsodizing about his childhood reading, and I love it for that.

Yet again we have Scrooge's father hating him for killing his mother in childbirth. What part of "Fan is much younger than her brother" do they not understand?

This Belle was gorgeous, and pleasant enough, but I didn't like that they had her break up with Scrooge after he was late meeting her. It made her objections come off as passive-aggressive pettiness rather than mature reasoning.

I adore that this included the scene of Belle with her daughters. I'd given up hoping I'd ever see that scene in an adaptation, and they did it so well.

The Ghost of Christmas Present was fantastic. Looked great, had a good demeanor. At least until the scene in the Crachit house, where he became too harsh and mean. And what is with adaptations making the end of Christmas Present a horrifying nightmare moment?

Tiny Tim is adorable. The whole Crachit family is a bunch of adorable moppets. I love them to bits. This is just about the only "God bless us, everyone," that felt like something an actual child would say, because his adorable little lisping voice sounds like he's repeating something he's heard adults say before.

I liked that Scrooge played along with the party games. Did not like that they framed it as "he's sneering at these idiots who can't get the answers".

The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come looked fantastic.

This might be my favorite version of Mrs. Dilber. She's not shrill or grasping--just a genial old lady who justifies herself, much the way that Scrooge does. It's a much more interesting and realistic-feeling take.

Scrooge was so dedicated to justifying himself every time someone criticized his behavior that his arc just didn't feel real to me. He was denying he needed to change, then denying that the dead man was him, so the last-second change at the gravestone didn't quite feel earned.

I figured Scrooge's genial nature would make his post-reformation scenes excellent, and I was right. He seems like a charming old man who should have a bunch of daughters and grandchildren. Makes me really mourn what he missed out on with Belle.

Though I didn't like his behavior at Fred's house. Instead of being uncertain and repentant, he seems smug and self-assured. Practically inviting himself over.

Tiny Tim running to Scrooge at the end was adorable and I may have shrieked at how cute it was.

Overall, not a very accurate version, but I love it for including some of my favorite non-adapted book scenes, and I love the atmosphere so much that I will likely visit it again.

I felt pretty horrible today. It didn't help that emotionally I feel all torn up because I think I should call out tomorrow but with the stupid miscommunication on Friday I don't feel like I can and I feel hurt over it. So today was 80% sleeping, trying my very best to recover.

I struggled last night. I was incredibly congested and a terrible temperature. Having the fan on helped but I was just not having fun.

I slept in late. Waking up at 9. Then 10. 10:30. I wasn't having a great time.

I made the bed and felt really bad. But I was really hoping I could shake it. I took some medicine. I drank some water. I went and had some cereal.

I would pull out the table for my sewing machine for when Kim and Naomi were coming over. I seriously considered canceling because I felt so bad but I thought I could hold it together. And I really think I did a good job.

I would fall back asleep around noon and woke up at 130. I had meant to set an alarm for 1 but I messed it up. Thankfully my body woke me up and I was able to drink a bunch of water and wash my face and be normal when Kim and Naomi got to me.

It was so nice to see them. They would be here for almost two hours. And it was fun. Naomi got a sewing machine for Christmas and it took me a bit to figure it out but I got it and was able to show them both and by the end Naomi was able to thread the whole thing herself without any help. Amazing.

We had fun though. We would make 4 shirts for her koopaling plushies. Hawaiian shirts. And while Naomi sewed and I helped trouble shoot me and Kim talked. I gave her a bit of a tour of the house and she was very impressed. Made me feel very good.

We also just talked about autism and support needs. How schedules and routines are so important. And I felt very scene when I told her about how upset I get when schedules change without warning. It was a really nice conversation.

Naomi barely needed my help, she's getting to good at this. And I think that's just so cool to see. Also she started calling me "friend" because that is what I say!! I thought that was really cute and sweet.

Naomi decided when it was time to go. Totally fair. They helped tidy up and said goodbye. And I was able to fall apart again.

I would deteriorate pretty rapidly. I got on the couch after eating a veggie dog. And waited for James to come home.

When James got back I was pretty miserable. They opened the back door for fresh air and got me some medicine. And would stroke my face and tried to make me feel better. I had some ice cream and some cheezits. And I just tired to not completely fall apart.

James would work on some bread pudding and then went to play a game with friends. And I have come upstairs. I might take a bath. Maybe that will help me feel better.

I have a field trip tomorrow. And then my rhumatologist appointment. I really hope I can get through the day and that I feel normal again. I'm really upset about having to work tomorrow. Like it will be fine but I am angry about it. I just hope it's a fabulous day.

🍩 DONUT - favourite sweet treat?

Melody- MELODY LOVES SWEET TREATS THIS IS SUCH A FUN QUESTION!!!! I think her FAVORITE must be vanilla pudding cake!!!! WITH FRUIT AND ICE CREAM YESSSS I'm getting hungry just thinking about it LOLOL!!! And she has a fondness for pudding cake in general, she loves preparing it for friends or family!!!!! But she likes most cakes!!! Including pound cake and bundt cakes (probably her second faves).!!!!!!!

Sacha- THIS IS AN EASY ANSWER FOR HIM HEHE IT's CHEESECAKE by a landslide!!!!! Specifically the standard, white kind. Sacha isn't one for super super sweet foods, so a chocolate fudge swirl cheesecake or like a caramel chocolate cheesecake would probably be too much. THOUGH, the default kind is good and he likes a couple strawberries on the side with NO whipped cream.... He's rather particular about it actually LOLOLLL

☕️ HOT BEVERAGE - do they prefer hot or cold drinks? what is their favourite drink?

Melody- She is definitely a HOT DRINK GIRL!!!!!!! She loves lattes and hot cappuccinos perhaps a little less often BUT Her FAVORITE drink is probably Hot Cocoa! It gets her in the mood for WINTER and CHRISTMAS (her fave holiday!!!!!!), plus it's just so sweet and rich, SHE LOVES IT. Though she has tried Boba Tea and liked that as well! It took her some getting used to, but I think that might be her favorite cold drink!

Sacha- He also has a preference for HOT drinks but his taste is contrastingly less..... SWEET?? 👤 I SUPPOSE!!!! His favorite is black tea!! She most commonly drinks it at home while she's working on creative projects and she is in fact a tea FAN, so she's got all kinds of teas back at his dorm!!! It's practically a must-have for him LMAO! Though, I suppose an exception to his not-too-sweet tastes would be sweet Chai, which he grew up drinking a lot and still has a fondness for! IT'S MORE LIKE A TREAT FOR HIM or something that he has when he visits family!!!! Very seldom does he ever drink it on his own!!!

🌌 MILKY WAY - what was the inspiration behind your oc? what was the first thing you decided about them?

Melody- I ACTUALLY HAVE A VERY FUN IMAGE TO SHARE WITH YOU FOR THIS QUESTION!!! I FOUND THE FIRST PICTURE I EVER DREW OF MELODY (side by side with her most current design!!!!! :9)

Of course, her name was originally TIPSY. That's what that's all about HAHA AND I unfortunately can't recall my thought process through physically designing her... :2 I think I was just doodling and she came to be HEHE. Design-wise, I think the first thing I decided for her was that she was going to have a cute, rabbit ear style bow (funny because she no longer has it at ALL 💔, though I think that's where her beret originated from)!!! As for personality, she was inspired by a change I was going through at the time!! Particularly my first experiences with psychosis, interestingly enough! She was sort of a way for me to cope with the scariness of it, since a large part of her character is and was her religious delusions and delusions of prophecy. She's not a PERSONIFICATION of those things necessarily, but rather a character I can share something in common with if that makes sense!!!! :3 I'm super attached to Melody for that reason, maybe that's why she's a fave of mine hehehe.... *twirling my hair giggling etc*

Sacha- HAHA For Sacha, the answer is much more simple: The first thing that I decided about him was HIS MASK!!!!! I think I saw some cool pictures of old, animal based folk art and immediately had the inspiration to make a character with a colorful, tiger mask !!!! :DDDD Sacha was a very hollow character when I first designed them... I really had no actual STORY or CHARACTER TRAITS laid out for them until about a year ago 😭😭😭!!!! BUT I think in terms of personality, the first thing I decided about her was her stoic nature 🧍‍♂️!!!!!!! Sacha has always been a bit cold and stand-offish, though AGAIN I FIND MYSELF UNSURE OF WHY or what correlation it had to his mask originally!!!! LOL 😖

🌪️ TORNADO - what is the biggest change you've ever made to them? how have they changed from their original version?

Melody- I THINK she changed the MOST in 2021, when I revamped several of my OCs at the same time!!!! Here, she went from light skinned to dark skinned and I made her chubbier as well (consequently darkened her port wine stain too)!!!!!!! I have a picture of her (in a silly outfit) from around this time to show the changes that I made!!! :333

Eventually, I would also exchange the port wine birthmark for piebaldism as well, I think because I wanted to give Jacques his neurofibromas and cafe-au-lait spots but it mirrored Melody's former spots a little too closely... ANYWAY!!!!!!

Sacha- SACHA ON THE OTHER HAND has remained mostly the exact same 😭😭😭 Ever since I first made him .... As far back as 2020. FUNNILY ENOUGH THESE PICTURES ARE FROM 2020, 2021, and 2023 RESPECTIVELY

LOLL ALTHOUGH He used to have this cool thing where his eyes could dilate and constrict like a cat's!!!! But I had no explanation for this . LMAO . I guess the largest change I've made was that!!! Just to make them (more) human since I strangely prefer working with OCs who are just some messed up guy LOL RATHER THAN A CREATURE 👹

☁️ CLOUD - a soft headcanon

Melody- Melody volunteers at a local church as a choir singer!!! She has a bit of a natural talent for singing actually heehee... She was never FORMALLY TRAINED or anything like that though. AND SHE LOVES BRINGING PASTRIES TO GIVE TO THE OTHER CHOIR MEMBERS. I think she has a close friendship with the old lady who plays the church organ HAHA

Sacha- I'M GONNA TALK ABOUT JACQUES x SACHA FOR THIS ONE JUST A LITTLE BIT 👹 I HOPE THAT'S OKAY. BUT Sacha gives Jacques kisses to wake him up.... LIKE IF they are spending the night together and Sacha wakes up first, he'll gently just kiss his face and whisper at him in French until he opens his eyes. GRRRRR *TEARS EVERYTTHING DOWN* Sometimes Jacques will pretend to be asleep just to get more kisses. 🧍‍♂️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️

💐 BOUQUET - create a bouqet for them! what do those flowers mean? are any of the flowers their particular favourite?

Sacha- FOR SACHA I CHOSE Alstroemeria (represents passion and devotion), Salvia ("forever mine"/deep love), Kniphofia (good fortune), Snapdragon (deception/concealment), Tiger Lily (prosperity)!!! Also Tiger Lilys are sort of the obvious answer LOLOLLL I KNOW ITS PREDICTABLE BUT I'm a sucker for the tiger motif... 😞 HAHA I think of THESE ONES, their favorite would be the snapdragon since he likes the delicateness of it hehee... Though I think that he is a fan of most red flowers because of their intense/bold coloring!!!!

Melody- AND FOR MELODY: Roses (passion/love), Poinsettia (good cheer and mirth), Camellia (adoration/longing), Tulip (holiness/forgiveness), Sweet Pea (friendship/gratitude)... AND I THINK POINSETTIAS HAVE TO BE HER FAVORITE.... YET AGAIN, because they remind her of Christmas and winter in general!!!!! Also the texture of them is really pleasant to her, she used to love touching the poinsettias at her family's Christmas celebrations as a child LOL

Sacha- He acts as a sort of fashion model for Jacques and Melody so they can dress him in their fashion projects for college! He won't show it (much), but he loves it HAHA.

Melody- She used to be a cheerleader!!! She was quite popular in high school too. She was part of several clubs and participated in school events Regularly. Her social friendly nature..... 🫶

UK vacation recap continued...

After the best flight ever, we rested at our Bloomsbury hotel a bit before heading to Victoria Coach Station. Very confusing over there, as there's a Victoria tube station and then a Victoria hub, etc... Any way, we booked a Christmas Lights tea party bus tour. These old timey buses are adorable but man do you feel every bump in the road! I think we all got a little motion sick.

The food was great though, as were the staff. The kid didn't like the paper crown that came with the cracker but she did enjoy asking us the riddles. And seeing all the Christmas decor was just lovely! I asked my sister how on earth did businesses put out these things without being stolen? And she said that they just do?, and I'm thinking with an Atlanta frame of mind (note: we laughed about it but an ATL community Christmas Tree had been stripped of all its decorations a la Grinch last week.)

We were all super tired by the time the tour ended, so the plan was to head straight back to the hotel. But when we got out at Tottenham, we saw this amazing thing! Despite being exhausted, we hung out here for a bit.

I love love LOVE Tetris! There was a QR code to scan if you wanted to play, but there was a queue already and I was happy just experiencing it. I had known that there was some kind of immersive video show near our hotel, but I took it off our itinerary because I didn't think we'd have time to see it. So happy to stumble upon it accidentally!

On the way back to the hotel, I noticed a man lying face down against the curb and I became extremely worried. Years ago, I went on a trip with my old French teacher, and when she noticed a homeless youth passed out on the street, she insisted that a nearby business call an ambulance. She taught us that just because someone is poor doesn't mean we step right over them when they're in need. So I was ready to call the police for this poor guy getting stepped over in London but my husband told me that the guy was in fact absolutely fine, and had been running away from the police just seconds earlier, which I failed to notice 😅

The next day we went to see Big Ben, who said, "BONG BONG BONG" etc. I know I'm immature, but I couldn't stop giggling at the shape of the sun on the sidewalk heeheehee

Afterwards we walked to Buckingham because the weather was gorgeous and saw the changing of the guard. I'm not a huge fan of royalty but the guards played Lady Gaga, which was nice.

Then we had lunch at the Grenadier in Belgravia, which is supposed to be a super haunted pub. Last time I was there I thought Cedric the ghost was messing with me when the toilet wouldn't flush. This time I found out that everyone has trouble with it, since the flusher is a chain from the ceiling 😆

(My sister had trouble walking on these types of streets. She was dying in her high heeled boots, and the other pair she brought were also high heeled boots? Tf? I told her she was dumb and she agreed, which led to her buying some sneakers at Covent Garden later.)

After the best sticky toffee pudding in the entire world, we went to the Natural History Museum. We saw a T-Rex automaton (which they had a warning sign about, as it could be "distressing") and the husband took a pic using that "get rid of people in the back" feature. It looks like everyone got raptured.

The museum itself was...a lot. Really great if you're a kid, but super overwhelming to an adult with sensory issues.

Then my sister took the kid to go shopping and stuff while the husband and I went to dinner at The Ivy. These are the things we saw while walking. My husband couldn't get over how nice London was, all these little neighborhoods and how they all get so festive for the holidays. We sorta have "neighborhoods" in Atlanta, but nothing cozy like the little streets and alleys we saw.

Dinner was all right, but I think my husband and I must give off povvo vibes. I was dressed nicely enough and my husband was dressed up (for him anyway), so it was a little funny when we went to the restaurant and the doorman was like, "How can I help you?" instead of opening the door for us. And I said we had a reservation, which ??? Why else would I come up to this establishment, to sell cookies? Our server wasn't the most attentive either, though we did see how kind he was to our neighboring tables. My husband chalked it up to his fluffy hair, which I conceded did make him look like a ragamuffin. But the food was good, especially! The chocolate dome! Which is where they bring out a small chocolate sphere in a bowl and they pour hot caramel on it to melt it so it reveals the cake inside. Honestly, that was the main reason I chose that place, lol. And this may sound absurd, but I absolutely loved the Ivy's bathroom. It was pink and gold and vintage-y and I wish I had taken my phone for a pic. I walked in and gave a soft, mournful "Ooh!" at how nice it was, which might've confused the other women in there, lol.
