Aoyama's Let's Talk Day 2025 Translation [Official Source]
Tumblr media
They've released the official transcript for Aoyama's yearly Let’s Talk Day, a day when a lucky few audience members chosen by lottery have the chance to ask him questions. The official transcript has a lot more (haha)s, but I translated it regardless.
Generally, there was no new Conan information in the official transcript compared to my unofficial sources translation, but some of the discussions Aoyama had with the audience members were described in more detail compared to tweets about the event.
The official transcript redacted questions that were considered "secret". Some of these questions were reported by unofficial sources. For simplicity, I've included a list of these questions with their sources at the end of this post from my original translation.
Without further ado:
Q&A with Aoyama Gosho-sensei
Questions from Middle Schoolers and Younger
Q. Will the Kuroba family and Kudo family ever properly meet each other?
Aoyama: Huh? In the future?
Questioner: Yes, in the future.
Aoyama: Ah, well… they won’t, but do you want to see it? (haha)
Questioner: I want to see it. (haha)
Aoyama: Then I’ll think about it. (haha)
Questioner: Thank you very much. (haha)
[The audience claps.]
Moderator: “I’ll think about it,” is a great answer, sensei (haha)
Aoyama: Right? (haha) It really is great (haha)
Q. After appearing on Kōhaku Uta Gassen [T/N: A music show that traditionally airs around New Year’s in Japan], do you have plans to write a case based around it?
Aoyama: Ah.. (haha) Right. (haha) Well… I wonder, there’s NHK to worry about. Ahaha…
[The audience laughs.]
Aoyama: They might not allow it. (haha) Well, I did think something like a music show case might be fun, but it might also be troublesome. (haha)
Moderator: What if you changed the name? Like, a West vs. East tournament.
Aoyama: Right… a music show murder case. (haha) But yes, I’ll think about it. (haha)
Q. What will happen with Momiji now that Heiji and Kazuha are dating?
Aoyama: Right… Momiji herself hasn’t given up, so. (haha) I’m sure she’ll be doing her best in the background somewhere. Something like that. (haha)
Moderator: So you’ll have her do her best. She’s like, a woman who doesn’t give up?
Aoyama: That’s right. (haha)
Q. Why can you think up so many different characters?
Aoyama: I have no idea. (haha) It kinda just pops up in my mind. I guess I’ve uh, watched a lot of movies?
Moderator: If I recall correctly, last year you mentioned that a large number of criminals have appeared but you’ve never drawn the same person twice. That you change them in some way every time.
Aoyama: Mm… yes. (haha) That’s right. (haha) I watch lots of movies and dramas and manga. (haha)
Moderator: So it kinda just pops up in your mind. That’s amazing.
Aoyama: It kinda just pops up. (haha)
Questions from the Entire Audience
Q. Do you plan to write a Police Academy-related case where Chihaya-san and Furuya-san meet, or cooperate to solve a case?
Aoyama: Ah, so Chihayafuru, you mean. (haha) Right… it does sound a little interesting, so I’ll think about it. (haha)
Moderator: “It sounds a little interesting”? Don’t tell me you stole that idea just now. (haha)
Aoyama: Ahaha.
Q. What’s your favourite case among those you’ve written until now?
Aoyama: Ah, that would be Ran GIRL and Shinichi BOY of course. [Detective Conan Vol. 87] Not to toot my own horn, but I do think it came out well. (haha)
Moderator: Every year you talk about how you love Ran-chan, romance, and love comedies after all.
Aoyama: That’s right. (haha)
Q. [Asked by a small boy] How did Kogoro become a detective when he’s not good at deductions?
Aoyama: Ahahaha.
[The audience laughs.]
Aoyama: Yes, well… it’s true he’s not good at deductions. (haha) But he has all sorts of other things he’s good at, like Judo… (haha) And like how he’s strong at Judo. And… well, he’s got Conan with him, heh heh. Everything works out. (haha) Yes. (haha) That’s all. (haha)
Moderator: That was a fun question. (haha)
Q. When in September is Nakamori Aoko born?
Aoyama: September, right… (haha) I haven’t decided. (haha) When would you want it to be? (haha)
Questioner: Huh…?
Aoyama: If you give me a date, it might become true.
Moderator: Amazing, it’s your choice.
Questioner: Wait a sec… then… Since Kaito is born on the 21st… maybe the 12th…?
Aoyama: September 12th? Is that good with you?
Questioner: Ah… um… yes…
Moderator: They say that they’ll leave it to you, sensei.
Aoyama: I’ll think about it at least. (haha)
Q. What does Ran-chan usually talk about with her karate club friends?
Aoyama: Huh…? (haha)
Questioner: Do they talk about romance?
Aoyama: I’m sure they do? (haha)
Questioner: I’m happy.
Aoyama: I think everyone is interested to know how things are going with Ran’s love life. (haha)
Questioner: I almost want to join them myself.
Aoyama: Ahahaha.
[The audience laughs.]
Aoyama: Then I’ll think about it including that kind of scene if anything comes to mind. (haha)
Q. Do you ever plan to draw the moment Kazuha-chan fell for Heiji?
Aoyama: Oh…? (haha) Do you want to see it? Then I’ll think about it. (haha) But this… well, I might just actually draw it. (haha)
Q. After the scene where Heiji-kun confesses to Kazuha-chan at Abeno Harukas, they come back down holding hands. Should we interpret this as Heiji-kun taking the initiative to hold hands, and do you plan to ever draw how that happened?
Aoyama: Right… (haha) Well, I think Heiji was the one to try and hold hands. (haha) I don’t know whether I’ll ever draw it, but I’ll think about it. (haha)
Questioner: Please do.
Aoyama: Um… if you go to Conan Tanteisha [the hometown museum], you can see a coloured illustration of something similar. (haha) Please go see it. (haha) I recommend it. (haha)
Aoyama: It’s very fun. (haha)
Q. At Kōhaku Uta Gassen, were there any artists that made you go “Woah, this singer is amazing!” other than aiko and B'z?
Aoyama: Huh…? Oh…? (haha) Hey hey. (haha) No, no… yes, yes… (haha)
[The audience laughs.]
Questioner: Fukuyama-san is also forbidden.
Aoyama: Huh…? (haha) I wonder who I can go with…?? (haha)
Moderator: They’ve zeroed in on all of your answers.
Aoyama: That’s right. (haha) I liked them all? Ahaha. The main thing is that B’z was amazing. The stage was pretty dark to us in the audience, you know. It was pitch black, and I was thinking “I wonder if anyone’s there? I can’t tell…” and then B’z showed up on the screen and I was all like, “Wooooooah!!!” (haha) It was amazing!!! …My choice is B’z. (haha)
[The audience laughs.]
Questioner: Thank you very much.
Q. Are you thinking about a spinoff featuring Hattori Heiji?
Aoyama: A spinoff? Like Zero’s Tea Time?
Questioner: Um… more like Hanzawa-san.
Aoyama: Ah, Hanzawa-san. (haha) H-How are they different? Ahaha.
[The audience laughs.]
Aoyama: We don’t have any plans for that right now. (haha) I apologize. (haha) Did you want one?
Questioner: Yes, a manga where Hattori is the star…
Aoyama: Right… (haha) We don’t have any plans for that right now, so I’ll leave it at that. (haha)
Q. Last year, Heiji-kun and Kazuha-chan were the main ship to have romantic developments. But if you plan to have romantic developments for any other characters moving forward, which ones should we keep our eye on?
Aoyama: That would be Kansuke and…? Something like that? (haha)
Questioner: And…?
Aoyama: Well, um. (haha) A ship I shouldn’t mention just… floated up in my head… (haha) It’d be bad to say. (haha) Well, that’s about it. (haha)
Q. I’d like my question to focus on Gin. I imagine Akai-san and the rest of the FBI are constantly on his tail, so he must travel around to many different places. Does he have safehouses across the nation, or does he stay in hotels like Mary-san and Masumi do? But it might be bad to leave any clues behind, so he wouldn't use the hotel amenities, and would pay for everything himself of course…
Aoyama: Ah… (haha)
Questioner: I really want to know if Gin-san would wear hotel bathrobes, so please tell me if you can.
Aoyama: Ah… (haha) Is that so? (haha) Um…? But I think they’d sleep in their cars or something, right? (haha)
Questioner: They wouldn't look for lodging?
Aoyama: Lodging… right, they probably stay somewhere no one would know about. (haha) Else, maybe Organization-controlled apartment buildings, or getaway houses. I’m sure they have them all over the place. (haha)
Questioner: So he flits from place to place to keep himself from being caught by the FBI…
Aoyama: Right, without being caught. He’s probably not caught. (haha)
Questioner: Does he wear bathrobes?
Aoyama: Gin? (haha)
Questioner: Yes!
Aoyama: Right… (haha) Ah, well, of course he does. (haha)
Questioner: I think it fits him!
Aoyama: I think he probably struggles to wash all that hair too. (haha)
Q. I came from Hokkaido. Last year’s movie was set in Hakodate and if I recall correctly, even had the clock tower show up. I’d be happy if Sapporo tourist attractions showed up next. Are there any plans for that?
Aoyama: Well, it’d need to be a long time from now. (haha) Right? (haha). We might. Where would you recommend?
Questioner: Right, um… maybe Oodori Park?
Aoyama: Ah… (haha) Yes.
Questioner: Um… we have romantic spots too… like the TV Tower, yes.
Aoyama: Yes, then well I’ll think about it. (haha)
Q. I have a question about Azusa-san. I’d like to know how long she’s been working at Poirot.
Aoyama: Azusa? I wonder? (haha) I don’t know. (haha) Well, hm, but maybe since her high school years…?
Questioner: Since she was a high schooler… thank you very much.
Aoyama: Of course. (haha) It was totally off the top of my head though. (haha)
Moderator: It’s interesting to find out what people want to know about.
Q. I’m born and raised in Tottori. Are there any plans for a movie set here?
Aoyama: Huh...? (haha) None right now. (haha)
Questioner: I’d love to see one if ever possible.
Aoyama: I used Tottori dialect in one of my works before, but I was told it was incomprehensible. (haha) Osaka dialect, Hakata dialect, etc. are pretty easy to understand, but Tottori dialect is hard. If we did do a Tottori movie, I’d want to have people speaking Tottori dialect, right… so… (haha) I’d have to find some kind of solution. I’ll think about it. (haha)
Q. [Per a previous question] you said that Momiji will do her best even now that Heiji-kun and Kazuha have gotten together, but will her butler Iori continue to stay by her side? Will he have to leave perhaps because of issues related to his old job?
Aoyama: Ah… no, well, I think he’ll be by her side forever. I think he’ll stay by her side until the day Momiji dies. (haha) I think he’ll keep protecting her.
Questioner: Thank you very much.
Q. I’d like to ask about Conan cafés. I know that you love curry rice, but is there anything else you’d like to eat at a Conan café?
Aoyama: What do they serve at Conan cafés again? (haha)
Questioner: It changes year by year.
Aoyama: I don’t know what the current menu is, but I like dishes like naporitan spaghetti that children like, so. (haha) Also, hamburgers and hamburg steak. (haha) That’s what I like. (haha) Sorry it’s so vague.
Q. Did you meet in advance with aiko-san to plan for the moment where you shot her with a tranquilizer watch? [T/N: Aoyama mock shot aiko-san with a tranquilizer watch at the end of her song on this year’s Kōhaku Uta Gassen.] Or at least, that’s what I wanted to ask, but there might be stuff you need to keep secret…
Aoyama: We had a lot of meetings about that! At first, I uh asked whether I should say “Funya?”, but that was shot down. (haha) [T/N: I don't know enough about aiko to say what "Funya?" might mean. Maybe a catchphrase?]
Questioner: I’m a aiko-san fan so I’ve gone to a fair number of her concerts, so I’ve watched the video of her song on Kōhaku Uta Gassen. Did any murder cases come to mind after seeing aiko-san?
Aoyama: Ah, well, hahaha. No, I can’t say any did. (haha) Do you want to see one? (haha) I’d feel too bad to kill off a singer, but, well, I’ll think about it a plot that would have a singer involved. (haha) aiko-san was very cute.
Q. Since Akai-san was raised in England, were there any sports he was forced to play aside from Jeet Kune Do?
Aoyama: I wonder? But Jeet Kune Do… he probably learnt it from his father, so I think he wouldn’t be interested in any other sport. (haha) But he seems like he’d be good at cricket. (haha)
Questioner: Maybe baseball in America…? Too?
Aoyama: Right, right. (haha) I think he’s good at cricket.
Q. I live in Kurayoshi. The Kurayoshi phone number area code is fairly important in your work, but what kind of role will Kurayoshi play in Conan in the future?
Aoyama: Ah… no, it’s just a coincidence. (haha) Kurayoshi, well… Kurayoshi residents would get mad at me, so. (haha) It would be difficult to use the city. (haha) It’s just a coincidence, I apologize. (haha)
Q. Do you have any New Year’s memories from when you were little?
Aoyama: Memories? Usually my family would ask me to visit a shrine with them, but I’d stay at home since it was too much of a pain. [T/N: In Japan, it’s tradition to visit a shrine on the first day of the new year.] That about sums up my New Year’s memories. (haha) But I always go these days. For my health. (haha) “Um… I’m counting on you this year again.” (haha) That’s what I go to the shrine to pray, basically. (haha)
Q. There was a scene in a chapter the other day where Hiro faces off against a criminal, but did he always have experience with martial arts?
Aoyama: I’m sure they learn uh… self-defence techniques and martial arts at the police academy, so he might not have any experience originally. But Hiro is strong. Though he’s weaker than Kyogoku. (haha)
Q. I’d like to know about Kyoto’s Inspector Ayanokouji’s personal life. Please tell me his hobbies, or what he does in his spare time.
Aoyama: Ah… (haha) Maybe he feeds Maro-chan and such. (haha)
Questioner: Does he have no other hobbies?
Aoyama: Hobbies? (haha) He loves Maro-chan, so that. (haha) Hey, what do you think would be good?
Questioner: Maybe archery…
Aoyama: Archery?! (haha) A bow?! Huh… (haha) Well, I’ll think about it. (haha)
Q. Do you have any plans for a triple date with Shinichi-Ran, Heiji-Kazuha, and Kyougoku-Sonoko?
Aoyama: Not at all. (haha) A triple date, huh? (haha) Ah, well, I see. (haha) I’ll think about it. Ahaha.
Moderator: You aren’t thinking about it at all, aren’t you? (haha)
Aoyama: I apologize. (haha)
Q. I watched your Professional interview. Since you were eating a lot of curry, I went out to eat at Curry Bondy too, and it was good. I’d love to hear about any other meals you enjoy while working, or food you’d highly recommend.
Aoyama: I wonder if I have anything to recommend…? (haha) All I eat is cheap stuff, so. (haha) I’m really into the beef don mini-pack from Yoshinoya- it’s a pretty small portion, so um, it’s good.
Moderator: The portion size is good?
Aoyama: Yes. Oh, any curry from Coco, of course. (haha) I like it.
Moderator: Sensei, you’re very economical.
Aoyama: Well, yes. (haha) It tastes good.
Q. I live in Saitama. Even though it’s so close to Tokyo, no Saitama detectives have made an appearance…
Aoyama: Ahaha. I apologize. (haha)
Questioner: I’d like you to draw a case set in Saitama.
Aoyama: Ah… yes. (haha) One day. (haha) Yokomizo did show up in Saitama at first, but um… he transferred to Shizuoka. (haha) I apologize. (haha) So, I thought to have Yokomizo transfer all over the place, but I was told that almost never happens. (haha) Right… then, I’ll draw Saitama… one day… (haha) I’ll think about it. (haha) I apologize. (haha)
Moderator: Which is it? You’ll think about it, or you’ll draw it?
Aoyama: I’ll think about it. (haha)
Q. Does Kazuha-chan have anything she likes aside from aikido?
Aoyama: Ah… she does like Heiji. (haha) Right, I think she’d like cooking [like others like her would.] Um… also cooking… and uh, I wonder… I hadn’t thought about it at all. (haha) You sure asked a tough question. (haha) What would she like… do you have anything in mind yourself?
Moderator: What she would like? It’s up to your [the questioner’s] imagination…
Questioner: …
Moderator: The questioner says that they wanted to hear it from you.
Aoyama: Right. (haha) But well, I handed them the power to choose, so. (haha)
Moderator: If they think of anything, it might become true, after all.
Aoyama: Does anything come to mind?
Questioner: …
Moderator: Then, please think on it, both of you. (haha)
Aoyama: Well, then, it’s fine. (haha) I’ll think about it. Me. (haha)
Q. I’m Taiwanese, but I currently live in Japan. Aside from the movies, Conan-kun has never been to any country but England. Are there any plans to have him visit other foreign countries? Like Taiwan…
Aoyama: His passport is an issue for him, so… (haha) Um… so he can’t really go overseas, um… because see, he doesn’t have any options aside from being stuffed into luggage by Kaito Kid, so. (haha) Um… going overseas would be difficult. (haha) Well, if he returned to his original body, he could go, but well, in his current situation it would be hard for him to go. (haha) I can’t use the same plot twice, so.
Moderator: It’s more about [the questioner's] feelings of wanting him to go to Taiwan.
Aoyama: Ah, is that so. I’d like to visit Taiwan too. (haha)
Moderator: Huh? You do?
Aoyama: Yes, yes, yes. (haha)
Moderator: Please do. (haha) Make some time. (haha)
Q. Organization codenames are so cool. I love them. I’d love to see new codenamed members appear, but do you have any plans for that?
Aoyama: What kind of alcohol would you like to see appear?
Questioner: To be honest… ●● [the name of an alcohol] or something, perhaps… (haha)
Aoyama: ●●…? Don’t tell me- are you ●●-san?
Questioner: Huh?! You could tell?!
Aoyama: Really?!
Questioner: Yes…! Thank you very much.
Aoyama: Amazing! So you managed to win a Q&A slot in the lottery… you’re the one who loves Koumei…?!
Questioner: Yes…! That’s right!
Aoyama: I’m happy for you. (haha) Koumei will play a big role this year, so. (haha) Please look forward to it. (haha)
Questioner: Thank you very much!
Aoyama: Please do your best. (haha) Ah, wait, I’m the one who needs to do their best. (haha)
Moderator: ?
Aoyama: Amazing… they’re someone I always receive fanmail from.
Moderator: Ah, I see! So that’s why you got so excited?
Aoyama: Yes, yes. (haha)
Moderator: I feel like everyone was out of the loop there. (haha)
Aoyama: Ah…! (haha) I apologize. (haha)
Moderator: I’m sure they’re happy they were noticed by you. (haha) Sensei, onto the next question…
Aoyama: Ah, right. (haha) I was too focused on ●●-san. (haha)
[The audience laughs.]
Q. Do you plan to draw Shinichi and Kid facing off?
Aoyama: Ah… right. I’d like to draw it. (haha)
Questioner: I’ll look forward to it.
Aoyama: Ahaha. Shinichi, huh…
Q. My name is Hattori. I grew to like my name thanks to Detective Conan.
Aoyama: Ahahaha. Wait, wait, wait. (haha) What about Hanzō? [T/N: A famous samurai was named Hattori Hanzō.]
Questioner: Please tell me what last names you like, or would like to have, in your works.
Aoyama: Ah… Kudo. (haha) I do really like the Kudo-chan that Matsuda Yuusaku played in Tantei Monogatari, so if I could I’d love to become a Kudo. (haha)
Q. Heiji and Kazuha deepened their relationship in the most recent chapters at Abeno Harukas. Had you already decided to an extent what would happen even before Abeno Harukas was made? [T/N: The building opened in 2014.]
Aoyama: From before it was made…?
Questioner: From before it was completed… did you already think of… a story where… he confessed, or well conveyed his feelings, somewhere high up…?
Aoyama: Ah… no, I thought it up after its completion. (haha) When was it completed?
Questioner: So essentially it wasn’t a plot you had planned for a long time.
Aoyama: Yes… right, it was after it was completed… But well, I did think that I definitely wanted to include Kazuha’s mother. I thought I’d trick you all. (haha) I wanted to make everyone think, “He’s gonna confess to her mother, right?” then pull the rug under you when he actually confessed. (haha) I had that planned for a long long while. (haha)
Q. Who’s stronger between Kogoro and Ran?
Aoyama: Who’s stronger?! (haha) Right… (haha) I wonder… hm.. A tough question. (haha) But well, Kogoro is strong! But, Ran is catastrophically strong too (haha).
Moderator: Catastrophically, huh? (haha) That’s true.
Aoyama: Well, I think it’s hard to say. (haha) But well… if they did fight, Kogoro would probably hold back since he’s her dad. That would probably be how it ends. (haha)
Q. My hometown is in Kyushu. When I go to Tokyo for work, I can really feel the cultural differences. Could you write a case related to that kind of thing?
Aoyama: Ah… I do want to write a case that incorporates dialects somehow, but it’s tough. I do want to do it one day though.
Questioner: Please do it in Kyushu.
Aoyama: Kyushu, huh? Right, right. (haha) With Hakata dialect?
Questioner: I speak Saga dialect though.
Aoyama: Saga dialect?
Questioner: Saga dialect.
Aoyama: Ah, so there’s a difference?
Questioner: Yes, it’s a little more hickish.
Aoyama: Ahahaha. Right, yes, I understand. (haha)
Q. Tottori has a Mystery Tour. If you have any memorable locations or tourist spots you’d like to include in that tour, please tell us.
Aoyama: Huh…? I wonder? It’s been a long while since I moved to Tokyo. (haha) Odaiba is quite near here, so maybe something that used that… I wonder. Aside from that, hm, Tottori makes you think of crabs, and uh, apple-pears. That kinda thing, I guess. (haha) I have no clue how you’d make use of it though. (haha) All I talked about was good food. (haha)
Q. Who’s the tallest among all your characters?
Aoyama: Tall characters? Right… Gin or Kyogoku.
Questioner: I heard that Date-san is over two metres tall…
Aoyama: Ah…! Date then, maybe?! (haha) Gin and Date might be close in height. Kyougoku might be a little smaller than them. Well, the point is, the three of them are big. Um… it’s definitely not Kazami. (haha) In my heart, Kazami is about the same height as Amuro. (haha) Well, Gin or Kyogoku or Date. (haha) That’s the top three. (haha)
Redacted Questions
These questions weren't mentioned in the official transcript, only by unofficial sources. As with before, I can't guarantee their veracity. Questions with multiple sources are likely more trustworthy.
Q. What can you tell us about this year’s movie at this point? Q. What’s the best part of this year’s movie? [T/N: I'm fairly sure these are referring to the same question.]
Aoyama: When I told Rikiya Koyama [T/N: Mouri’s VA] that Kogoro is the main character this year, he told me he was nervous. Once he was done, Takayama-san [T/N: Conan’s VA] told him he sounded cool. I'll be drawing a key frame for it.

Q. Akai and Amuro infiltrated the Organization and know about Sherry, but don’t know of the existence of APTX4869?

Q. Do you have any special tidbits for us aside from what you’ve already told us?

Hi! Let's talk about: Conan's terribly kept secret, and how come he doesn't seem to mind that Akai has pretty much figured it out (and teases him about it)
I'm not going to lie, I think about this a lot and I've wanted to make a post dissecting the whole thing for a while. It's one of those details within two characters' relationship that says a lot about their overall dynamic, in my opinion.
So, to start off, let's address the secret in question and what it means to Conan. Basic stuff, but it's a useful starting point.

The first and greatest motivation behind Shinichi's efforts to keep his situation a secret from Ran is that he doesn't want to endanger her (good idea in theory, not so easy in practice, but this post isn't about that).
In time, this also becomes valid for everyone who associates with Kudou Shinichi and/or Edogawa Conan, given all the stunts he pulls as the latter. Just to be on the safer side, those two identities should remain separate.
Now, here's the first real "outsider" who figures out Conan is Shinichi.
Tumblr media
I'm kind of reading this as Conan attempting to call Hattori's bluff, but as soon as he realizes that the guy is serious about telling Ran everything, he drops all pretenses and comes clean about the APTX.
Now, since this is still pretty early on in the manga, we can argue that Conan's identity hasn't been solidified just yet and Shinichi doesn't know how dangerous the Organization actually is, and combining that with the fact that Hattori is pretty much a stranger, the pros of conceding defeat on the matter and explaining himself to a fellow detective definitely outweigh the cons.
(This also gifts us with the funniest swaggest most whimsical duo ever, but I digress /silly)
And after Heiji, we have the man, the myth, the legend. Hondou Eisuke. His case is kind of particular, in that he doesn't really try to get the secret out of Conan. The truth is presented to him due to something unrelated (asking Ran out), which is apparently reason enough for Shinichi to out himself.
Tumblr media
I do believe that Shinichi felt secure enough in doing this for a couple reasons: first and foremost, Eisuke is at least marginally aware of the Organization and the danger it represents, and he knows the importance of keeping secrets given both his sister's situation and his career choice. Secondly, Eisuke is leaving Japan: sure, there's a chance he might stay in contact with his friends via text, but he has no reason to tell Ran about Conan's real identity in the first place.
The real "danger" here was the possibility (very, very small. Basically non-existent, to be honest) that Ran would say yes to Eisuke's proposal to go to the States together (where, in Shinichi's mind, he wouldn't be able to follow, where he wouldn't be able to watch over her, where he felt he would lose her in every way that matters), and that chance, no matter how small, warranted an intervention. Not exactly pure logic, but that's teenagers for you (affectionate).
Alright, so what about people like Masumi? She even has an advantage in that she already knows about the existence of a drug that makes people shrink: her own mom looks like a middle schooler because of that. She's in danger no matter how you look at it, and she's clearly been keeping that secret the same way Agasa, Hattori, and the Kudous have for a good while. So how come she doesn't get to join the club?
The answer is, of course, the risk factor.
Masumi, as we all know, wouldn't know the meaning of subtlety if it hit her in the face with a baseball bat. We love and cherish her regardless, but admittedly, that's not a trait that would inspire trust in a pair of teenagers hiding their continued existence from an evil syndicate.
That's right! We have her timing to keep in mind as well. Masumi is added to the scene well into the main timeline's events, which means multiple things:
Conan's identity is finally well-established and separate from Shinichi's. Ran has had her suspicions in multiple instances, but they've been assuaged every time. Still, that balance is hard to maintain.
Shinichi is now fully aware of just how dangerous the Organization is: he's now much more reluctant to just share his secret willy-nilly with random strangers, even though they might prove to be useful allies in the long run.
Conan isn't the only shrunk teenager running around anymore: Haibara has just as much reason as him, if not more, to want to keep the number of people in the know as low as possible. By revealing his own secret, there would be virtually no way for Shinichi to keep Haibara out of the metaphorical line of fire.
Therefore, a variable that behaves like this...
Tumblr media
Or this...
Tumblr media
Isn't very likely to garner much favor from either of these two.
Something to take note of, though, is the fact that Conan pretty much only ever panics when Masumi brings up his identity if she's making an active effort to also bring the matter up with people who are firmly on the "Absolutely Cannot Find Out" list (Ran especially).
In multiple other instances, when Masumi alludes to being aware of Conan's ruse but talks to him one-on-one and makes it clear that the comment is a one-off occasion (and that she's not going to push it this time), Shinichi doesn't really lose his cool.
Tumblr media
He may stumble over his words a bit, but the moment isn't played as dramatic or high-risk, per se. It's more as if he were being privately teased about his situation— sort of like as inside joke. It's not exactly welcome, but it also doesn't raise any alarm bells since it stays between him and Masumi.
Now, would Conan's problems with Masumi's nosiness be solved if he gave up and admitted the truth she already knows? Of course, but that's not really the point.
The issue is that this wouldn't be happening on his terms. He would be giving in to someone's else's demands, and in addition to that, Masumi has been asking non-stop about the antidote that Shinichi intermittently uses to get back to normal.
That, above all else, is what makes the endless dance of denial necessary, I think: admitting the truth also means outright admitting that prototypes of an antidote exist, and that means exposing Haibara (both her past work and therefore criminal background, and what she's been working on these past few months: letting Masumi have even a single pill would mean the MI6 getting their hands on it in turn, and that's pretty much not something anyone wants), which in turn would probably set off a very unpleasant chain reaction for everyone involved.
When Shinichi conceded defeat with Hattori, it wasn't on his terms either, but at least he knew the guy didn't really have any ulterior motive apart from his one-sided beef with the Detective of the East.
With Masumi there is no such certainty— quite the opposite, in fact, which is why I think this is the reason he's been so insistent on denying the truth even when he now knows full well that Masumi's can be no mere suspicions.
With all that said, let's get to the point of this bad boy! (I did not think this analysis would get so long. Holy shit)
Let's start with the fact that Akai operates on a pretty simple need-to-know basis. If something isn't relevant to what he's trying to do, he tends not to mention it. Still, he's not exactly strict about this: when Conan mentions Akai and Masumi's familial relation, he takes it in stride and gives his own confirmation because he sees no reason not to.
Now, this of course doesn't mean that he can't get curious about things himself, or that he won't conduct his own investigations on said things. His M.O., however, is very different from that of, say, Hattori or Masumi. It can probably be chalked up to maturity and years of experience, along with the simple matter of his personality, but Akai doesn't exactly make a spectacle of things.
He knows when to push and when to let go in a manner that still gives him the answers he seeks. He easily manipulates Conan into giving himself away as Shinichi while still making sure to be the only one witnessing that moment.
Tumblr media
And then he decides to be a bastard and give Conan a heart attack... for about a tenth of a second, since as he does that he also carefully words things in order to give the kid an easy out.
Tumblr media
All Akai wanted was to figure out the mystery in front of him (he's by admission a curious guy. He likes solving puzzles): now that he has his answers, he's not really going to do anything with them because he has no reason to— Conan is already willing to cooperate with him and the FBI (and has already done so before), after all. They already share intel more or less freely. He's literally living in the kid's house. For free. Why would he jeopardize any of that by falling out of favor with him?
This, I think, is a pretty solid basis upon which I can build my beautiful sandcastle.
Of the couple times in which Akai respectively asks Conan about his identity outright and mildly teases him about his circumstances, the context always plays a huge role.
In the first scenario, the two are speaking in public, yes, but at the same time the conversation is:
Pretty much kept private
Initiated by Conan (he asked for information first!)
Framed as a proposal of a mutual exchange by Akai, who also backs off immediately as soon as Conan turns him down
Tumblr media
Of course, Shinichi is already reasonably sure Akai has him figured out anyway, so the point is moot, but it's still nice to get plausible deniability and still be somewhat in control of when he's going to come clean to the guy of his own volition.
In the second scenario, the situation is even more "secure" so to speak, as:
They're sitting in Okiya Subaru's car
They're completely alone
They're in a hurry to do something else (God fucking dammit, Shuukichi)
Tumblr media
In this case, Conan doesn't outright react to the jab. Maybe it's because he doesn't really know what to say, or maybe it's just that he doesn't have enough time to come up with a reply before Shuukichi picks up the call. Either way, he does perhaps look a little put on the spot, but there's no real panicked reaction, no telltale change in what Conan's pupils look like in true DetCo fashion, which I'd say confirms he doesn't feel threatened at the moment.
(If we really must give it a critical interpretation, maybe the bit feels a little like a joke falling flat because it was made during an otherwise tense moment and it has nothing to do with the bigger issue.)
It's also worth noting how Akai's dig directly ties into his own circumstances, which possibly helps with lowering the "offensive" charge of the words. It's not a direct accusation, but rather a mildly humorous, harmless observation about their shared status (presumed dead by the enemy).
The biggest thing about both scenes is still, however, the fact that Akai unfailingly frames the subject in a way that leaves the choice of whether to actually talk about it completely up to Conan. He definitely recognizes his position as privileged/advantaged, but actively chooses not to make use of that, and he hasn't treated Conan any differently ever since verifying his suspicions either.
(Sidenote: I do believe that keeping the kid's identity from his own colleagues is also a strategic choice. Like I mentioned before, outing Conan would mean outing Haibara, and I do believe Akai's promise to protect Shiho also includes keeping her far away from any government agency who may be interested in what she knows— and what she's done.)
In conclusion: I am extremely normal about random interactions between these two and also I think that Conan's unshakeable trust in Akai stems from how the guy has been treating him ever since they started collaborating— with genuine respect (and even admiration) and never actually making him feel cornered the way so many others do, whether intentionally or not. This results in occasional sillygoofy privileges because Akai can recognize the time and the place in which it's acceptable to tease the Cone.

CONAN DIES WHEN RAN CRIES
i'll let shinichi explain:
chapter 71
Tumblr media
when i first read this chapter, i thought that shinichi was sweet talking ran to avoid her wrath, but rereading the manga made me realize how misguided i was
"it hurts me when you cry" is shinichi admitting something deeply personal, it's him explaining why ran's tears always get a reaction out of him, regardless of the circumstances, regardless of the body he's in
chapter 9
ran: is struggling with shinichi's absence
Tumblr media
shinichi: starts calling her on the phone as himself
Tumblr media
chapter 48
ran: is emotionally overwhelmed after the karaoke bar case, thinking that shinichi is back and avoiding her, waits for him in the cold for three hours
shinichi: comes up with the idea of talking to her as himself by turning off the lights
Tumblr media
i love this moment so much, cause he's using both ran's love language (physical touch) and his own (words of affirmation) to ground and reassure her and it works
chapter 95
shinichi: tells ran to stop crying and ignores heiji in the middle of a case to ask her to wait for him
Tumblr media Tumblr media
chapter 143
shinichi: checks on ran after using her for his deduction, drops honorifics when he realizes what he's done and defeatedly endures her tears
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also shinichi: never involves her in a case to this extent ever again, even 1000 chapters later
chapter 260
shinichi: involuntary flakes on ran during their date and has to face her as conan
also shinichi: forgets he's conan for a sec as he drops the most epic lines in the manga
Tumblr media
chapter 334
ran: is heartbroken cause it's valentine's day and shinichi's still gone
Tumblr media
shinichi:
puts the jacket on her when she falls alseep,
Tumblr media
reaches out to her as himself
Tumblr media
and eats her chocolate
Tumblr media
just to get her to smile again.
chapter 479-483
ran: supsects conan's real identity again and feels like he's completely out of reach even though he's so close
Tumblr media
also ran: stops suspecting him but still expresses feelings of emotional distance to shinichi
Tumblr media
shinichi: gets a second phone just for ran
Tumblr media
and carries it with him wherever he goes.
chapter 727 (white day)
ran: starts crying because she thinks shinichi didn't get her anything for white day
Tumblr media
shinichi: goes out of his way to draw attention to his gift so she stops crying
Tumblr media
(LMFAO, he's so extra)
chapter 743-752
ran: feels like her feelings for shinichi are one-sided, is absolutely devasted, runs off crying
shinichi: drops his current case, runs after her
Tumblr media
and confesses his love for her, so she never doubts his feelings for her again.
Tumblr media
chapter 884
ran: is frustrated by all the misfortune shinichi brings
Tumblr media
shinichi:
Tumblr media
in conclusion, shinichi only has two weaknesses: aptx 4869 and ran's tears. and the funniest part is that aptx didn't even kill him like it was supposed to. ran's tears on the other hand? i believe they possess great power. enough power to kill shinichi?

I adore your Phantump!Conan AU. An idea(I'll probably write it later and @ you)I have is that Heiji is the one to find Shinichi's partner pokemon(his name is Sherlock, right?) and is just like, 'come with me if you wanna reunite with Kudo'. And so, Heiji sneaks him(in a pokeball) home, got him all healed up(he did just escape from the Black Organization), did a quick interview(plus explain what has happened since he was taken), and then made his way over to where Kudo/Conan lives. What's your thoughts on it?
Hi! I am very happy you like my au and I would love to see your writing for it!! I actually had a different idea in mind, of his ceruledge breaking itself free and going a little mad with guilt, until Conan’s able to calm it down…I might draw a comic……or perhaps even write it (😳❗️)
Tumblr media
But!! I think your idea sounds great and you should absolutely write it regardless of what I do ^_^ im just putting out ideas for fun and if anyone has an idea for this au that contradicts something I’ve posted, they should still go ahead! This is a fun collaborative sandbox to me and goodness knows I contradict myself all the time lol

i have Read the Chapter (1136)
do i think this is set up particularly well?
i’m not sure. i think you HAVE to conceptualize the movie as part of the lead up to this (which just fuels my “movies, especially recent ones, are at minimum canon in concept, if not canon in concrete” agenda) for it to remotely make any sense and not feel like a complete asspull. shinichi remembering hagiwara in m25, amuro’s noncommittal comment to him after he brings it up… you can read things into that.
am i bothered by this?
lmao no. sorry, but i’m a sucker for convoluted character webs, and i will not be angry at another thread being drawn between ran, shinichi, and amuro and his buddies. this falls in line more with how sera and mary recognized him as opposed to how akai actually put two and two together, so i’m happy the dads don’t repeat (i’m a simple soul)
besides, i think amuro finding this out was never going to be the most important OR interesting aspect to this development. hell, i would have been perfectly happy finding out he got this info at the kudo tea party. no, what’s going to be more interesting is what he DOES with the info. rum has him looking into shinichi, i don’t fucking KNOW who has him looking into conan, and now he has personal experience pointing to them being the exact same person. vermouth has also tasked him with not bringing any harm to conan, aka shinichi, aka the guy that should be listed as dead in org records. how does he use this info, if he does at all, for his goals? does he find a way to come clean to conan, or does he try to keep him out of it regardless of what he does?
now the real fun begins as we test the somewhat tenuous trust conan and amuro have built, because shinichi and rei have things to get done. but are their agendas compatible, or will there be new friction?

I think one of my favourite parts about shinichi/Conan is his ability to just accept people regardless of what they’ve done. Like for someone who’s entire personality is finding the bad guys and bringing them to justice he has an astonishing amount of empathy for criminals.
Narumi/Seiji and not being able to save them from the fire definitely changed him for the better in a way, despite the amount of guilt and trauma it gave him.
I think it’s most obvious in the way he treats the (former) BO members, especially Ai. Because he has a right to be upset at her and really nobody should expect him to help her or forgive her or whatever considering she’s at least partially responsible for his entire life imploding — and still in a matter like a day, or however long timeline wise it took for him to find out about Akemi, he started to consider her someone he needs to protect. And sure part of that might just be because of leftover guilt he has because of what happened to Akemi — but the fact he even feels guilty, despite the fact that by default Akemi wasn’t a great person (weewoo part of a really BAD organisation and also a criminal!!!!) really puts his character in perspective. And he genuinely does start to care about Ai after all — to the point where during one of the Bourbon showdowns (I forgot which one), his first thought after thinking his identity might’ve been discovered, isn’t the fact that his life and by extension everyone around him might be in danger, but rather the fact that if the BO finds out what he looks like now, they’ll find out about Ai as well.
You can also tell during the showdown with Irish — yes it’s a movie, yes it’s non-canon or whatever, but Irish was a bad, bad person and had every intention of killing him after getting his revenge on Gin, and he STILL tried to get him help, to the point where Irish willingly sacrificed himself to protect him.
Not to mention all of the other cases he’s solved where he managed to feel sympathy (??) for the criminal even if he can’t like….understand (??) what made them criminals in the first place. Idk does that make sense? He’s just my favourite special little guy

Kogoro: Even this inexperienced kid can be helpful from time to time! Shinichi: I should've put him to sleep with the tranquilliser gun...
Me: you do that so many times it's refreshing to see you NOT do that.
Then-
Tumblr media
The killer's motive had been "That man lied to me about my having a bad habit that would bring me down, and I ended up injured because of it, and as a result of his (intentional) words, was unable to play properly because of that. I wanted to make him, who was trying to re-write the Japanese record [of saves in the sport] and prove to him that I'm the one who broke that record and had the glory."
And Kogoro here?
The way he says "The stopper is a team's last line of defence. You get viciously shot at... you get viciously jeered at... but you must show a straight face in the next match when you get to play and stand in the mound!"
It reminds me of his role in the story.
Kogoro's role, really, is to be the fall guy. The one who's kinda dumb and stupid and silly and who brings in the comic relief. He's not a complete idiot! But in many ways he's an audience surrogate as well as the silly man in a comedy duo, so he's often not allowed to make good points, or look/act cool without it being turned into a punchline.
But... that's exactly why these lines hit hard, coming from him.
In many ways, it makes it seem like Kogoro's self-aware of his role in the story, that he knows he's made fun of all the damn time and that he still has to keep a good face up regardless.
It makes me think of how, at the end of the day, Kogoro is usually the only adult in the recurring cast that's always there no matter what, and if something happens to Conan and/or Ran, he's usually the one to handle the adult side of things as their guardian, especially if something happened to both of his kids.
Tumblr media
It's things like this that make me like him regardless of whether he's even half-aware that his deductions aren't his own and he's just playing a part, or if he's just cruising along more than half the time.
And the punchline at the end isn't even as bad on going "nah, he's just his same old self as always" as it could have been.

Magic Lovers Murder Case~
Sonoko and Kaito would be really great friends and I'll die on this hill. He would be estastic to learn that he had inspired her to learn magic herself.
Annnnd Conan has to ruin the fun XD
Honestly I'd love to meet my internet friends. Don't be such a grouch, Conan.
Shinichi has a cold so he can't smell the gasoline on the bridge. And so he can be dramatic and faint later.
If only Sonoko hadn't judged Doito by his appearances, she could have been flirting with her beloved Kaitou KID. Not that she has a chance when Shinichi is around though...
Shinichi you should hang with others when you have a cold, Kogoro is right to take you home. That's probably why he was grumpy, as he knew he probably wouldn't be allowed to stay, but he had to try and sneak inside regardless.
Man, the guy could have at least knocked.
It still hurts so much how Toichi is Kaito's favourite magician. While in the fandom he's probably the most hated character T-T
Shinichi: So, are you feeding me instead?
Living with people hasn't done him any good, he's now just expecting to be fed. He's like that baby bird video that's opening it's mouth for food expecting the worm to jump into it XD
Shinichi: I will run across a burning bridge! That is a smart idea!
No wonder KID is used to rescue him so much in movies, he has no self preservation. Not that Kaito is any better.
Ooooh, Kaito look so angry in that shot. And it's no wonder, he came here to try and prevent the murders from happening, with his nature it wouldn't surprise me if he blamed himself somewhat T-T
Kaito is already so much more calm around bodies than Ran is, and even knows what to do without others shouting orders at her, though I do know a part of that is because of the misogynistic way Gosho writes women.
I love how Megure leaves us hints about KID being involved (obviously it's not a surprise for me but it's so fun to think about how people probably assumed it was about the case only to be a foreshadowing of Kaito's involvement).
Wait they shoot arrows to decide the lottery in Japan? I wish they did that here.
Kaito being upset how magic has been used to kill T-T Poor boy T-T
Shinichi is such a child XD It's a sweater and you're ill, deal with it. Plus Ran is a magician herself and makes it fit you.
That should have given away she was the killer immediately. Who gets shot at with an arrow and THEN GOES TO THE WINDOW IT WAS SHOT THROUGH. Actually scratch that, Shinichi would.
KAITO IS SO UPSET. NOOOOO T-T MY POOR BABY BOY.
Shinichi hasn't perfected his KID senses yet. Soon you will be able to see through any disguise.
Kaito being helpful and getting the alibis because people won't listen to kid Shinichi. And Shinichi giving him the third degree because he's suspicious XD
Shinichi's oi oi's are cuter.
Shinichi had no reason to pick up the wine other than curiosity and I love that. I too have the habit of having something put near me and then having to investigate it.
Does Kaito have some wine? You know what, the boy deserves a drink.
Shinichi is so rude, you can't run off on a poor guy.
Kaito being the one shown to react when Shinichi screams T-T HE ALREADY CARES SO MUCH ABOUT HIS TANTEI-KUN.
Tumblr media
The face of chaos. I'm going to make it my pfp picture.
Kaito would be confident in his shot. He's a damn good one.
This trick involves a lot of ropes.
Poor women, your grandfather wouldn't have wanted you to murder people over this...
Shinichi sneaking away to confront Kaito again because he doesn't want to miss his date with him. It's a shame it's happened on such sad circumstances. But at least Kaito asked him out on another date!

Hi MasterDetective !
I just found your blog and read many of your theories which got me even more excited regarding future files. ! Wanted your thoughts on a couple of things.
Regarding the Tea Party , it was Conan who suspected that Amuro is onto Shinichi and he figured out that he has stolen keys to Kudo mansion . So he must be the one to inform Yusaku and Akai of it. Also, during the case where Police officers were getting murdered Conan got some info from Amuro regarding the case, and Amuro thought of Conan as pretty astute, shrewd and a private eye thinking of Midnight tea party which also suggests that he should have been involved in what was discussed.
But file 1067 claimed that Conan has no knowledge of it. How did that happen.? I don't see Conan simply telling his parents about Amuro becoming suspicious and his parents telling him , ok we will handle it , now go back home. He must be wanting to know what happened regarding that development.
Also I don't like the fact that the "Good Side" which is Conan's side has started to keep secrets from Conan. I feared something like this would happen when Yusaku will get involved in the fight against BO as he is more competent than Conan in every aspect. Until he was involved the smartest person in their camp was Conan , so he was involved in all the planning. Rather almost all plans were made by him. But since a more capable member is there , Conan is getting overshadowed and even important info is getting hidden from him. It reminds me of the episode where Yusaku made his first appearance and suggested to help him out and Conan was against the idea and said it's my case and I will handle it on my own. Seems like it's not his case that much than it used to be before Yusaku got involved.
Hello!
About Conan not knowing about the tea party, all we can presume is that Conan was left out of the loop of what happened after Conan warned the Kudo household. Whether it was by Conan not bothering to ask, or by Yusaku/Yukiko/Akai lying (saying Bourbon never showed up) or withholding details (saying they handled it and there is nothing to worry about), we don't know.
Ultimately, regardless of Yusaku's central involvement, Gosho is never gonna forget to highlight Shinichi as the protagonist who gets the best spotlight in the story. We are simply in the build-up process towards those climatic moments in the future were Shinichi ultimately prevails.

CA headcanons that im too lazy to draw or have no idea how to write
Putting them together to keep my brainrot ongoing and ONE DAY draw them...
Shinichi/Conan:
- i am a firm believer in glasses shinichi. i know glasses for this character is stupid lore integral but i literally don't care. My basis is that repercussions of being shrunken takes form in the slightest ways, such as weaker immune system plus weaker vision. it was inevitable anyway as well, given his bad screen practices and genes. he wears circular glasses though as shinichi and only wears it at home, and vehemently refuses to be seen outdoors with glasses.
- that post that's like, "i love my men with blood on their hands and traumatized"? i love to hc b.o takedowns where he actually kills gin. shoots him. Fucking murders him and destroys his principles. i need him to actually face a stake in his life and be it this sort of loss??? so much room for growth.
- contrary to how hes portrayed, even if he praises holmes as his god, he genuinely does read other mystery novels. often seen with a pocket mystery novel
- tbh. i think of them as different people but not haibara/shiho as different people Hahahah!! I love the idea of growth in the form edogawa conan. I think in a no antidote route, conan is less serious, still snarky, but more willing to tease. exceptionally casual and confident, but humbled with scars. Understands his limits but also very sweet to his gf
- in a no antidote route, i also hc conan to be more explorative. my conan experiments everything with his two bros mitsuhiko and genta, praises them both, and actually wants to find a seperate hobby that makes him different from the shadow he once was
- in a no antidote route he also dyes his hair a lighter brown to be different
- hes closer to mitsuhiko! in fact he is so proud of mitsuhiko very often, and supports him where he can. they study together. he and genta are both in soccer teams, and they go to practice together and hang out with the team
- also i am in firm belief he can be a romantic if hes not thinking about it. but sometimes he does know what hes doing. and is pretty damn good at it.
- unsurprisingly easily jealous but isn't that petty about it
Shiho/Ai:
I have lesser HCs for haibara bc i actually am fine for the most part with the canon supplement material. i just feel bad for her lol i want to save her from the show's canon...but!
- her self destructive behaviour can sometimes cause a wedge between them. he is very patient with her all things regardless, but they have had a fight about it before—and she knows she needs to do better, in order for their relationship to work. He cant always be the only one apologizing
- despite being the one who seems unfallible she's just very good at hiding when she's embarrassed/affected by shin/con. he gets pretty good at figuring this out a few years into their r.s.
- (SA mention) i definitely think she has some kind of unprocessed SA trauma behind her, but contrary to what people may think, she isnt sex-repulsed or unwilling. they have healthy times for it and both of them explore things at their own pace together. she trusts her partner with herself and has found her own autonomy after everything
- i double as a seraran stan but i think she and ran would actually be good friends too!!!!!! even if she wouldn't be as close to her as shin would ever be, they have lunch together once a month as adults and often talk about their partner's tendency to get sucked into cases and their fangs...
- i strongly hc shiho as demisexual/demiromantic. even supposedly if in any canon of mine she doesn't get w shin (unlikely) she takes time to herself and live freely independently until she finds her own partner. i dont think its some cut off goal of hers to get one anyway, she feels loved as she is and is fine with that
- she has trouble voicing when she's touchstarved. he tends to notice, though, and acts quickly. she avoids the feeling vs him being needy about it
- in a no antidote route she experiments growing her hair out once. it felt foreign, and difficult to maintain her curls, so she cut it the next summer. shin liked it either way though
CoAi/ShinShi :
- ShinShi move in together at age 20-21. he proposes relatively early—only after 3 years of dating—but they dont get married until they are like 26. they just kept putting it off lmao
- penthouse apartment in the city. Its luxurious but shiho constantly jokes about the idea they get bombed. shinichi doesnt like it.
- Shin gets his license immediately after turning 20. Shiho tends to do most of the driving still, but they take turns during road trips with the kids
- If ShinShi revealed their identities to the kids (whether the kids figured them out on their own or not), shinichi puts on his conan glasses for them and shiho puts on a similar, adult sized sleeveless turtleneck whenever they're together. they assume the roles of Conan and Ai with them (even going as far as introducing themselves as such to other people with the kids). It gives them a state of normalcy even if they have a larger age gap, intergenerational friendship alongside some parenting.
- they do get two dogs. shiho allows him to name only one of the dogs and of all names he chooses its freaking watson. the other dog is named vivi. short for vivianite, a mineral that can form on decaying corpses. Watson is a german shepherd while vivi is a pomeranian husky mix
Will update if i ever think of more

Detective Conan Rewatch 471-486
Oops I forgot to write my thoughts down for a few days again
The uncontrollable rental car was actually top tier tho. I'm used to the single ep anime originals being fairly straightforward but this was unique and the characterization was great. We see Kogoro's best side and action hero dad Tagaki and a really smart trick pulled by Conan to save them all. I really liked this one.
Shinichi Kudo's childhood adventures is super cute! It's really nice to see babby Ran and of course Shiinichi. I almost wish we had more of their past and how they fell in love and the development part of all that but I get why we don't and the snippets we do get are cute. We get to see dad KID too which is fun (and babby Kaito too!) However as my friend pointed out this ep does feel like it confuses the nebulous timeline somewhat? Yukiko's been retired from acting for some time now so her still actively studying from Toichi is odd? Maybe? Maybe it's just her hobby now I dunno.
The love of lawyer Eri Kisaki is funny. It's super simple, especially for anyone who owns a cat but it manages to be great regardless. Ran really nearly assaulted a man 😅 well I'm sure Eri could have gotten her off the charges but still
Bad luck grand Prix is well it's an average episode, i certainly didn't think it was bad but it felt like a regular old episode with nothing super standout. I do like the occasional cases that are Kogoro and Conan hanging out all family like though it's sweet.
Genta's certain kill shot was fun! Mostly because my friend saw the title in advance and we've been choking about Genta's upcoming murder plan for a while XD the actual case is still pretty neat tho, although as usual the English is a little rough. I wouldn't say its common but you probably want imp or pixie to describe a mischievous kid not elf. I also kinda agree with Kogoro that it was mean to point at Genta and call him a murderer poor kid.
Real 30 minutes is an odd case. The time... didn't feel super relevant? The character designs were neat though and Conan and Haibara teaming up is always good.
Three days with Heiji Hattori! My boy was back for some more cases and they're fun ones. The first is neat because it feels like they reiterated Conan's trauma regarding cornering a culprit, almost feel like they could have focused on the impact of that ending and what that means to Conan and Heiji more but eh, it was neat to have it still. As for the detective Koushin I really enjoyed it! I've been looking forward to it a lot since reading that manga chapter and having a gathering of detectives is fun, the culprit is great too, I can see why she's so well liked. It's also great to have Hakuba here too although I gotta admit that yeah he seems pretty Sus of Conan, or perhaps just nice about it who knows. I liked the whole sequence at the beginning regarding the backstory too. And finally Heiji did really great! I like how they show how he differs from most other detectives we see who stand back and observe with methodical coldness by being emotionally invested, always having hope for possible best outcomes and willing to come across as wrong and act to gather the evidence he needs. I love him and this episode did a great job of showing why <3
Yellow Alibi is a sad case with a dumbass for a culprit. Who on earth murders someone on a beach and then tries to hide the fact the murder happened on a beach? Has this man never been to a beach before? You never get all the sand off my god.
Mountain Witch's cutlery is a simple little case but well presented, the weapon was neat and the kids were cute.
The vanished policeman was also a cute little simple case. Not much to say about it other than that tho.
Whereabouts of the dark photograph is fun because the crime differs which is neat every so often. Also those two guys will probably never commit a crime in their lives after that experience XD
Beckoning cat from left to right is simple but hey it has cats and Conan and Haibara teaming up which is nice.

We can’t sleep on this quote from the chef either. I just watched the ep and had to chime in, there’s a lot to unpack.
Tumblr media
He says this right before he’s dragged down to the bottom of the tank.
A lot of this episode seems to be a warning to Conan to throw aside his pride and arrogance. Shinichi’s overarching character development is basically just getting humbled. He looks down on childish things like candy and kids meals because he thinks he’s too good for them, regardless of whether or not he would actually enjoy them.
This episode is so different tone wise from every other episode and I’m curious if there’s any symbolism behind Conan’s dream. For example, the chef obviously parallels Conan, being an arrogant genius. But his 3 henchmen remind me a lot of the detective boys (2 boys, one overweight, one girl).
Tumblr media
And when the chef fails to get Conan due to his arrogance, the three get dragged down with him. It felt like a warning or just a bad omen in general.
Tumblr media
This episode is really one of the few glimpses we get into Shinichi’s psyche. One of my biggest gripes with Detective Conan is that while it shows what happens in the story, we don’t ever really get to see how it affects the characters (which is why I read an ungodly amount of fanfic). I actually really like this episode. It in itself feels like a mystery we the audience have to solve and I really like that.
The people who complain that the episode is stupid or weird just took it at face value and nothing else. A lot of people even think the dream sequence was something that actually happened and then criticized it for being unrealistic😭😭 those people on other forums did NOT pass high school literature class.
No matter how special it is, a kid's lunch is still just a kid's lunch.
I dunno, I liked "The Genius Restaurant" (Episode 1,089).
Happy (belated) birthday, Jimjam.

I'm confused, why are people so focused on Rei selling out Haibara to the organization? He's been told to go after Shinichi. If he wants the organization to trust him and see him in such a great light he will go after him as he was told, no? Honestly I was kinda rooting for it too, think that would've been an interesting turn even if Rei ended up being with the good guys.
Yeah but that's not going to happen because Conan is the protagonist and Gosho has always in a way 'saved' Conan from falling into the BO's clutches. Which is why he made the Kudos ambush Rei in their house and they had a 'tea party', aka the alliance they formed with Rei to get him off Shinichi's back.
Also like I said before, Rei views Conan as a valuable ally. And since he is PSB, there's no way he'd sacrifice a Japanese citizen to the BO like that, especially when Conan is a victim because of the BO.
So yeah, regardless Rei won't come after Haibara or Conan.

Hakuba?
Tumblr media
disclaimer: i haven't seen ep.479 yet, it's been a hot minute since i read magic kaito, and i wrote this after a few drinks
(in no particular order below the break)
they got done dirty by fans • despite being basically prototype shinichi (and, appropriately, looking a bit like the end product of using polymerization on him with shiho), he gets relatively little attention. obviously most of this is just due to the fact that he just doesn't appear in anything-- and hasn't for a not-insignificant amount of time-- but that and personality and flaws aside, i think it's kind of a shame because of most everything else on this list, such as...
wasted potential / didn't get enough screen time / they work better as part of a dynamic • his relationship with kaito is so funny. he heckles him """knowing""" that he's KID but has never actually 100% without-a-doubt, irrefutably confirmed it. he gets bamboozled every time but is just so dead set on it that he completely ignores kaito's repeated insistence that he isn't who he thinks he is and just continues to talk to him as if he's talking to KID and that's just hilarious to me. it's kind of like if conan never disclosed his identity as shinichi to heiji but heiji treats him like he does in current canon anyway. of these interactions by far the best one is the volunteering of valuable information to kaito in the middle of the chat noir heist as an under-the-table, backhanded sort of bidding of "good luck." it's a lesser mirroring of the relationship kaito has with conan - but arguably funnier since hakuba """knows""" the truth but conan does not (and likely does not care to, as it would not alter the dynamic). • the above, but now with the added hilarity of him being 1 of 3 members in a group of 4 (one of whom is JUST KAITO HIMSELF sksksk) who know that kaito moonlights as KID at the conclusion of MK1412. i'm a little mad this didn't continue like WHAT were they gonna do LMAO • adjacent to the above: his apparent (former? is he still into her?) infatuation with akako. obviously it's just/mostly a result of him being under her spell but it's so fucking funny that she still sort of notices him regardless. even if he is just a means to an end she calls upon him when kaito is in danger in sun halo, which is... wild?? akako is also member #2 of this KID group which makes this even funnier, deadASS what was the endgame of this group gonna be in practice LOLOL, everyone just uses everyone else as bait for something or other and the end goal of unmasking KID is just completely moot if 75% of them already know
wow! they are a horrible person
Tumblr media
• you cAN'T JUST SAY THAT TO HEIJI AND GET AWAY WITH IT
Tumblr media
• *wildly gesturing* YOU ALSO CAN'T JUST ACCUSE OTHER PEOPLE OF NEPOTISM (something something people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones etc. etc.)
• in the MK anime specials canon, hakuba has relatively little interest in capturing KID and instead uses him as bait iirc?? tbf they're all guilty of this in the MK1412 canon, but it rubs differently when spider is the prey they're trying to catch - different if only because he poses a legitimate threat to even kaito. even if he saves him before he's lost to the nightmare that's still something of a MASSIVE gamble, especially if both he and kaito combined are not much of a threat to spider T___T like this is like... how conan tends towards recklessness when the black organization is involved, including the disregard/failure to consider the full consequences of involving or using the people around him, villain or otherwise (pisco and itakura, at least, come to mind).
why do they look like that • he LITERALLY debuts in sherlock cosplay • his eyes are red?? hello???? (why is this so vivid in my memory but now when i try to look up screenies to corroborate they're brown in every single one of them)
Tumblr media
whatever. they're red to me. makes things more interesting sksksks
i don't really have much to say about them / i forgot this character existed (am i the biggest lying liar or nah. look at all this text) • despite all of this, that's kind of all i have to say about him. i didn't do my homework and am drawing purely on memory and that's a little hard when he makes so few appearances even in the MK canon(s). MK in general has a lot of wasted potential tho imo and i think that extends to its primary cast too, including hakuba. personally i think he's far too wacky to mesh well into detco canon, in the same way that detco kaito is not quite the same as MK kaito.
all in all i think hakuba, unlike his successor, is really not at all tolerable on his own and works infinitely better with practically anyone else in the ekoda gang (but mostly kaito, bc they are both proprietors of a part of the MK-brand of Shenanigans).
anyway thank you for the character!! nice opportunity to think about the fellas i don't typically yammer about :D
