Love the idea of old man Lister, who knows what happens with him and Rimmer in the future, remembering that he appears briefly before his young self in the future echo and that Rimmer is there and he just decides to fuck with him. It is so funny to me

Like that bit where he’s saying to Rimmer to come closer so he can tell him of his future and then keeps telling him to come closer, closer, closer! And then he laughs and vanishes, pissing Rimmer right off lmao.

Old man Lister knows the rocky ride that lays ahead for them both but he also knows the green grass on the other side of that struggle. He knows how ridiculous and foolish and young they both were then and how much they have to learn still, about themselves and each other before the inevitable grows between them. But what’s the point in telling him all that? They get there in the end after all. Plus it’s funny to just mess with him this way anyway.

And he also knows this younger Rimmer would lose his Fucking Mind if he told him what happens and it’s all so funny to him in that moment lmfao

i was just rewatching s1e3 of red dwarf, where rimmer takes kochanski’s form and tries to trick lister.

genuinely what was his goal there? like i can’t think of a straight excuse for that at all.

like he knew that lister would act romantically towards him thinking it was kochanski

even if it was just to trick lister into thinking he really had swapped the discs and stop lister from outranking him, he knew lister would follow through with a date and all

AND EVEN AFTER HE WAS FOUND OUT HE WAS STILL TRYING TO CONVINCE LISTER TO GO THROUGH WITH IT “it’s kochanski’s body. it’s kochanski’s voice. i mean, what’s the difference?!”
