I need people to understand how S&P (standards and practices) works in television and how much influence they have over what gets to stay IN an episode of a show and how the big time network execs are the ones holding the purse strings and making final decisions on a show's content, not the writers / showrunners / creatives involved.

So many creators have shared S&P notes over the years of the wild and nonsensical things networks wanted them to omit / change / forbid. Most famously on tumblr, I've seen it so many times, is the notes from Gravity Falls. But here's a post compiling a bunch of particularly bad ones from various networks too. Do you see the things they're asking to be changed / cut ?

Now imagine, anything you want to get into your show and actually air has to get through S&P and the network execs. A lot of creators have had to resort to underhanded methods. A lot of creators have had to relegate things to subtext and innuendo and scenes that are "open to interpretation" instead of explicit in meaning. Things have had to be coded and symbolized. And they're relying on their audience to be good readers, good at media literacy, to notice and get it. This stuff isn't the ramblings of conspiracy theorists, it's the true practices creatives have had to use to be able to tell diverse stories for ages. The Hays Code is pretty well known, it exists because of censorship. It was a way to symbolize certain things and get past censors.

Queercoding, in particular, has been used for ages in both visual media and literature do signal to queer audiences that yes, this character is one of us, but no, we can't be explicit about it because TPTB won't allow it. It's a wink-wink, nudge-nudge to those in the know. It's the deliberate use of certain queer imagery / clothing / mannerisms / phrases / references to other queer media / subtle glances and lingering touches. Things that offer plausible deniability and can be explained away or go unnoticed by straight audiences to get past those network censors. But that queer viewers WILL (hopefully) pick up on.

Because, unfortunately, still to this day, a lot of antiquated network execs don't think queer narratives are profitable. They don't think they'll appeal to general audiences, because that's what matters, whatever appeals to most of the audience demographic so they can keep watching and keep making the network more money. The networks don't care about telling good stories! Most of them are old white cishet business men, not creatives. They don't care about character arcs and what will make fans happy. They don't care about storytelling. What they care about is profit and they're basing their ideas of what's profitable on what they believe is the predominate target demographic, usually white cis heterosexual audiences.

So, imagine a show that started airing in the early 2000s. Imagine a show where the two main characters are based on two characters from a famous Beat Generation novel, where one of the characters is queer! based on a real like bisexual man! The creator is aware of this, most definitely. And sure, it's 2005, there's no way they were thinking of making that explicit about Dean in the text because it just wouldn't fly back then to have a main character be queer. But! it's made subtext. And there are nods to that queerness placed in the text. Things that are open to interpretation. Things that are drenched in metaphor (looking at you 1x06 Skin "I know I'm a freak" "maybe this thing was born human but was different...hated. Until he learned to become someone else.") Things that are blink-and-you-miss-it and left to plausible deniability (things like seemingly spending an hour in the men's bathroom, or always reacting a little vulnerable and awkward when you're clocked instead of laughing it off and making a homophobic joke abt it)

And then, years later there's a ship! It's popular and at first the writers aren't really seriously thinking about it but they'll throw the fans a bone here and there. Then, some writers do get on the destiel train and start actively writing scenes for them that are suggestive. And only a fraction of what they write actually makes it into the text. So many lines left on the cutting room floor: i love past you. i forgive you i love you. i lost cas and it damn near broke me. spread cas's ashes alone. of course i wanted you to stay. if cas were here. -- etc. Everything cut was not cut by the writers! Why would a writer write something to then sabotage their own story and cut it? No, these are things that didn't make it past the network. Somewhere a note was made maybe "too gay" or "don't feed the shippers" or simply "no destiel."

So, "no destiel." That's pretty clearly the message we got from the CW for years. "No destiel. Destiel will alienate our general audience. Two of our main characters being queer? And in a relationship? No way." So what can the pro-destiel creatives involved do, if the network is saying no? What can the writers do if most of their explicit destiel (or queer dean) lines / moments are getting cut? Relegate things to subtext. Make jokes that straight people can wave off but queer people can read into. Make costuming and set design choices that the hardcore fans who are already looking will notice while the general audience and the out-of-touch network execs won't blink and eye at (I'm looking at you Jerry and your lamps and disappearing second nightstands and your gay flamingo bar!)

And then, when the audience asks, "is destiel real? is this proof of destiel?" what can the creatives do but deny? Yes, it hurts, to be told "No no I don't know what you're talking about. There's no destiel in supernatural" a la "there is no war in Ba Sing Se" but! if the network said "no destiel!" and you and your creative team have been working to keep putting destiel in the subtext of the narrative in a way that will get past censors, you can't just go "Yes, actually, all that subtext and symbolism you're picking up, yea it's because destiel is actually in the narrative."

But, there's a BIG difference between actively putting queer themes and subtext into the narrative and then saying it's not there (but it is! and the audience sees it!) versus NOT putting any queer content into the text but SAYING it is there to entice queer fans to continue watching. The latter, is textbook queerbaiting. The former? Is not. The former is the tactics so many creatives have had to use for years, decades, centuries, to get past censorship and signal to those in the know that yea, characters like you are here, they exist in this story.

Were the spn writers perfect? No, absolutely not. And I don't think every instance of queer content was a secret signal. Some stuff, depending on the writer, might've been a period-typical gay joke. These writers are flawed. But it's no secret that there were pro-destiel writers in the writing room throughout the years, and that efforts were made to make it explicitly canon (the market research!)

So no, the writers weren't ever perfect or a homogeneous entity. But they definitely were fighting an uphill battle constantly for 15 yrs against S&P and network execs with antiquated ideas of what's profitable / appealing.

Spn even called out the networks before, on the show, using a silly example of complaints abt the lighting of the show and how dark the early seasons were. Brightening the later seasons wasn't a creative choice, but a network choice. And if the networks can complain abt and change something as trivial as the lighting of a show, they definitely are having a hand in influencing the content of the show, especially queer content.

Even in s15, (seasons fifteen!!!) Misha has said he worried Castiel's confession would not air. In 2020!!! And Jensen recorded that scene on his personal phone! Why? Sure, for the memories. But also, I do not doubt for a second that part of it was for insurance, should the scene mysteriously disappear completely. We've seen the finale script. We've seen the omitted omitted omitted scenes. We all saw how they hacked the confession scene to bits. The weird cuts and close-ups. That's not the writers doing. That's likely not even the editors (willingly). That's orders from on high. All of the fuckery we saw in s15 reeks of network interference. Writers are not trying to sabotage their own stories, believe me.

Anyways, TLDR: Networks have a lot more power than many think and they get final say in what makes it to air. And for years creative teams have had to find ways to get past network censorship if they want "banned" or "unapproved" "unprofitable" "unwanted" content to make it into the show. That means relying on techniques like symbolism, subtext, and queercoding, and then shutting up about it. Denying its there, saying it's all "open to interpretation" all while they continue to put that open to interpretation content into the show. And that's not queerbaiting, as frustrating as it might be for queer audiences to be told that what they're seeing isn't there, it's still not queerbaiting. Queerbaiting is a marketing technique to draw in queer fans by baiting them with the promise of queer content and then having no queer content in said media. But if you are picking up on queer themes / subtext / symbolism / coding that is in front of your face IN the text, that's not queerbaiting. It's there, covertly, for you, because someone higher up didn't want it to be there explicitly or at all.

A stealth trans reading of Arcade Gannon

When I say a “trans reading” of Arcade I’m not meaning to imply that I think he is literally hinted at or canonically trans in the text of Fallout: New Vegas, and I don’t even personally headcanon him as trans myself and if anyone else does that’s their own prerogative. What I mean by a “trans reading” is that there are several aspects of Arcade’s character that are translatable and comparable to the experiences and trajectory of a stealth trans man without necessarily relating to being trans in an explicit way. For example, I’ve derived meaningful transfeminine readings of Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman in Batman Returns, both Frankenstein’s Monster and the Bride of Frankenstein, and Christine Royce in a similar way, where these similarities are read without the intent to argue that these characters are “intended to be” or are “actually” or “should have been” trans in a canon, textual sense. It’s not that I think that’s not fun or not valid or anything, it’s just that that’s not relevant to what this approach is interested in doing.

I also feel like it’s important to explain what I mean by stealth. When a trans person is stealth, it means that they are passing or striving to pass as their gender full-time and have suppressed the visibility or public knowledge of their transition as much as possible, so that they may move through the world without anyone being aware of their status as a trans person. This mode of being almost invariably requires breaking contact with everyone you knew pre-transition, and for much of trans history, it was standard practice to move to a new, unaware town once you’d changed your name, gotten surgery, and passed a certain threshold of cis-passability to begin life anew in your new gender. People go stealth for a variety of reasons; in the past and to this present day it was largely to avoid transphobic violence and oppression, but individuals may also go stealth just because they do not want to be treated as a trans person but treated the way society would treat any cis person of their gender. Whatever the case, and as a general point, no one is entitled to the knowledge of whether any given individual is trans or not, and it is always a trans person’s own prerogative whether to disclose this information about themselves or not, and if so, how and to whom.

And so, we come to Arcade Gannon, formerly of The Enclave. By the time of Fallout: New Vegas, The Enclave is a beaten but still very much reviled enemy of the republic, and in multiple endings of the game, Arcade is liable to be hunted down, arrested, or even executed by the NCR for his status as an Enclave Remnant. Naturally, Arcade is extremely secretive and dodgy about his past, and disclosing his status to the courier as an Enclave Remnant after earning his trust is the fulcrum of his companion quest. Arcade is a very, very openly homosexual man, but despite this openness, many have related to Arcade’s secretiveness as resembling the proverbial closet that queer people inhabit before they are willing or able to come out publicly. However, I think that is precisely because he is out as a gay man but also so secretive of his past identity that makes his character arc more salient to compare to being a stealth trans man as opposed to the closet.

To be stealth is not to be closeted. Although both involve a concealment of identity, the reasoning for and method of concealment are different, and the closet loses its usefulness vis-a-vis being trans once you have already actually transitioned. To risk oversimplifying, when you are in the closet as a trans person, you are hiding what you are; when you are stealth as a trans person, you are hiding what you were. Because Arcade can possibly be so open about his sexuality (gay) but so secretive about his past (Enclave/trans), the stealth comparison trumps the closet comparison in terms of usefulness.

Because ultimately, when Arcade is refusing to divulge his past with the Enclave, what he is refusing to divulge are the circumstances of his birth, his upbringing, his childhood, the people he knew and the things he did before he became the Arcade Gannon who stands before you in the present day. The other Enclave Remnants are, essentially, the people he moved away from like the stealth trans people of old (and today) would, as they are the only people who would know at all about his “old self.” And as a transsexual I find this arc of Arcade’s very fascinating, in this way, since I can understand why his secrecy is so well-deserved, why his disclosure to the courier is such a massive gesture of trust, and why his wish to assemble the other Remnants is such a big risk.

To conclude, one can perform a stealth trans reading on Arcade by juxtaposing that which is translatable to the trans experience, his upbringing within The Enclave and subsequent secretiveness over that upbringing for good reason under fear of oppressive treatment, with his open gay sexuality. None of this is to objectively assert that Arcade is literally trans, or that The Enclave as a faction is some hamstrung queer metaphor—in fact, the juxtaposition with his open gayness is only compounded in this reading by that exact lack of explicit or intentional transness in his character, since if he was a canonically trans character, then the literal text of his transition would trump the subtext of his history in the Enclave as representing transness, transition, and going stealth.

What I wanted to demonstrate by doing this reading was, again, the ways in which certain characters or stories can be used as a locus for articulating trans subjectivity. It’s not literally about transness, but when we perform a trans reading, it’s like switching the audio track of a music video for a different song: if it has the same tempo then the dance is still on beat.

(note: my own subjective reading of Arcade in this way is not an observation of Arcade as “queer coded”; queer coding is an intentional effort by writers or actors or directors to suggest the queerness of a character without being censored and in my opinion has largely but not entirely lost its usefulness as an applicable term in the present day where open queer characters are ostensibly more permissible, and also this is Arcade we’re talking about and you literally cannot “queer code” a character who is actually openly queer lol)

Sorry if you've been asked this explicitly before, but what are your thoughts on Penguin Logistics, specifically in comparison to the other organisations/factions in Arknights? I recently started and managed to grab everyone within a few pulls, except Sora (and I guess Mostima, unfortunately.) and I think they're easily my favourites. Would love to hear your thoughts. Cheers.

No one's ever asked me that, but they probably should have since I've gone all-in on Penguin Logistics ever since I pulled Exusiai and Croissant early on. I then proceeded to never pull any of the others, forcing me to buy Texas and Sora in the shop and much later dump all of my accumulated gacha currency getting Mostima. Anyway, my goal in life is to use the entire team and also max them all out. PL4life!

Anyway, my initial impression of them was that they were the cast of a 90s anime like Cowboy Bebop or Bubblegum Crisis (...Tokyo 2040). Like, they're an eclectic band of hyper-competent misfits working for a small company operating at the edge of the law. “Penguin Logistics” itself sounds like a euphemism for being, like, smugglers or something. "We'll get your package where it needs to go, no questions asked." Then Code of Brawl came out and I was totally right except they are also very dumb in a funny way. Like, they accidentally got into a turf war with the mafia, but apparently that's just business as usual.

Anyway I want to talk about each of them individually now so apologies if this starts rambling.

Texas is pretty clearly the main character of Penguin Logistics, and you can tell because she's the hub of their whole relationship wheel on the in-game chart.

She's also kinda Spike from Cowboy Bebop, although less laid-back I guess. She's a former mafia assassin on the run from her past, but her past won't leave her alone. Incidentally, "mafia" in this case refers to the various wolf families from the fantasy Italy equivalent in this setting, although they make some interesting comparisons to wolf packs in the profiles. However, Texas's family is dead, which should make her a "lone wolf" that will supposedly never have another place to belong. Except PL itself is proof that that's wrong.

Theoretically she’s just the team’s driver, but because PL is always getting into ridiculous anime fights she’s also good at that part too, using dozens of little... lightsabers(?) that she throws around willy nilly. It would probably look super-cool to see in action, except this is not that kind of game so we’ll just have to wait for the anime or whatever. It’s noted in her profile that her fighting style shows that she unconsciously sees as the only purpose of a weapon as being to kill, and heck, she’s right.

She's cool-headed, adaptable, and the serious one you can always count on, but she's not above getting into friendly(?) brawls just to take out her frustrations out.

Her name comes from the extinct subspecies of Texas Wolf.

Next up is Exusiai, the angel who loves nothing more than guns, god, rock and roll, and apple pie. In that order. In other words, a stereotypical American. Even though she's from the fantasy-Vatican. Basically she's a cheerful, friendly, laid-back person who never really fit in back home where people are expected to be more serious and orderly. Not enough to be, like, shunned or anything but she's always been a weirdo. All angels have guns though, that’s like standard issue. She wishes she could have more though.

She's also super religious, but interestingly never brings it upon her own. I feel like she probably realizes how uncomfortable it can make people who don't share that religion to suddenly bring up Jesus all the time in casual conversation. Like, she's not ashamed of it or anything, but she won't shove it in your face either. Personally, I find that a pretty cool characterization for a fictional religious person.

Which is also sort of a hint that beneath her goofy exterior she's a thoughtful, deliberate person who doesn’t let anyone in by accident. Texas notes that they're exact opposites in this respect. She also has an extremely interesting relationship with the next person.

Her name comes from the Greek word for the order of angels in Christianity often translated as "Powers."

Mostima... where to start...? I guess first of all she’s a fallen angel, apparently because she pointed her gun at her own kind under MYSTERIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES. Probably related to the whole war in Kazdel thing, where many of the other MYSTERIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES in this game took place. Long story short, stuff happened in the war, she pointed her gun at another angel, Exusiai’s sister is dead under mysterious circumstances, and Mostima gave up her gun and now wanders the world delivering long-distance packages for PL. But that’s mostly an excuse for to be alone as much as humanly possible. She can also use time magic because I dunno why not. MYSTERIOUS.

She’s friendly enough, talkative even, and has a hobby of visiting new places and trying out the local food, etc, but her real defining trait is that she just doesn’t need other people. She’s explicitly aromantic, saying she has no interest in love, but she also has no need for friends or family or apparently coworkers either. Because of the way the world is, she spends most of her time driving through the endless wastelands between cities, with nothing but a truck, some packages, and her thoughts. There’s something... romantic about that (in the other sense of the word), but even she admits that the romance of watching the sun set in a desert with no one else around for hundreds of kilometers gets old after a while.

I feel like I should note that she has a very “best friend of her big sister” relationship with Exusiai, by which I mean she’s known Exusiai since Exusiai was a kid and to her Exusiai will always be that kid. Also Exusiai only joined PL in the first place to hunt her down and get answers about her sister’s death, but Mostima just laughs it off and leaves town for another year or five. 

Her name is probably a corruption of Mastema, a rather infamous fallen angel in mythology.

Croissant is... well, to be honest everyone past this point is more of a minor character. Which is actually a weird thing to say since none of these people are actually major characters in Arknights, but I guess these are less important people even within the group?

Croissant’s gimmick is that she’s always trying to make money by selling stuff. I guess she’s a merchant? But not, like, a formal one who runs a shop, she just gets her hands on stuff through her connections and sells it. But in like, a friendly down-to-earth way, it’s even said that she lives paycheck to paycheck. She’s a girl trying to get by with a second job, I guess is what I’m saying.

Team-wise, she’s the muscle of the group, being a minotaur and all. She lifts the heavy packages and also smashes things with her MAGNETIC HAMMER which I don’t know why I find that name so amusing. Gameplay-wise her special move can knock all the enemies around her halfway across the map and I smile every time she does it.

Her profile notes that she’s really just living her best life as a normal-ish person, and that helps make everyone around her feel normal, and that’s important in a setting where half the people around you are dying of magical cancer (no one in PL is Infected though).

Her name comes from the French word for Crescent and also a type of Pastry. Leaning more towards Pastries in my opinion.

Sora is an idol singer. Because, to be perfectly honest, what ragtag band of misfits is complete without an idol singer? She can’t really fight, but I guess Texas must have saved her life at some point or something because she bullied both her agency and PL into letting her work there part time. And also she is obsessed with Texas. I guess saying it like that makes her sound kind of annoying, but she really isn’t, she’s just an earnest girl chasing her dreams.

There’s also this interesting thing where a lot of her basic information is censored by her agency in order to protect her privacy (”do not dox the idol”). Even including her race. She presents as a wolf, but her promoted E2 art has her as a rabbit, which raises some interesting questions that don’t really get answered.

Her name comes from the Japanese word for Sky.

Lappland is not really part of PL, but she’s PL-adjacent enough to be worth mentioning here. Basically she’s an old acquaintance of Texas from back in their mafia days, and she’s obsessed with hunting her down and... fighting her? Killing her? But in, like, a sexual way? She’s kind of a crazy psychopathic killer. Maybe. She can also be very calm and polite when she wants to be, although with a taste for gallows humor. That just makes her scarier because you don’t know when/if she’ll snap.

There are two kind-of explanations for her being like that: A) her family is dead and she has no “pack”. As a wolf, the stress of living without a pack is supposed to be maddening. B) She’s infected with Oripathy (magic cancer) and there are crystals growing in her nervous system. Which... can’t be good. The answer is probably a combination of both.

But the most important thing about Lappland is her base skill and how it interacts with Texas. Basically, in your base there are various jobs you can assign people to and different characters get different bonuses for them. Most people in Penguin Logistics get bonuses for working the Trading Depot, for obvious reasons. Lappland gets a “bonus” where if she’s in the depot at the same time as Texas, she loses morale slower but doesn’t actually get any bonus to productivity. Meanwhile, Texas gets a bonus to productivity when Lappland is around, but loses morale way faster. In other words, Lappland is slacking off and making Texas so uncomfortable that she works twice as hard just to get the job over with so she can leave. This is their relationship as defined by game mechanics.

Texas also has another bonus where she loses morale slower if Exusiai is there, which completely cancels out the penalty she gets from Lappland. In other worlds, Exusiai being there too calms her nerves enough that she doesn’t feel the need to immediately escape.

Oh yeah, I forgot to talk about Emperor, who’s the owner of Penguin Logistics. He’s a world-famous rapper wearing a Tupac shirt and also literally immortal.

I'VE BEEN PONDERING TOPLEVEL

Object-oriented abstractions. Incidentally, nothing makes it more patently obvious that the old chestnut all languages are equivalent is false than designing languages. 80% of the time you get to social questions, many changes are just fashion. Except for some books in math and the hard sciences.1 These people's opinions change with every wind. I'm inclined to think there isn't—that good design has to be new—that it didn't predict anything. A few hundred thousand, perhaps, out of billions. What can't we say? But, as in more recent times indecent, improper, and unamerican have been.2 A friend of mine asked Ryan about this, it was even better than C; and plug-and-chug undergrads, who are amazed to find that there is something wrong with you if you thought things you didn't dare say out loud.3

I'm just stupid, or have sex, or eat some delicious food, than work on hard problems. This second group adopt the fashion not because they want to do more than just shock everyone with the heresy du jour. Com signals strength even if it is a huge win in developing software to have an interactive toplevel, what in Lisp is called a read-eval-print loop. In the process of developing the pitch for the first conference, someone must have decided they'd better take a stab at explaining what that 2. No one does that kind of thing for fun.4 Back in the days of fanfold, there was a new kind of computer that's as well designed as a Bang & Olufsen stereo system, and underneath is the best Unix machine you can buy individual songs instead of having to buy whole albums. But it's harder than it looks. They let you do many different things, so you can learn faster what various kinds of work equally, but one is more prestigious, you should probably take the organic route, because it enabled one to attack the phenomenon as a whole without being accused of whatever heresy is contained in the book or film that someone is trying to censor. This article is derived from a keynote talk at the fall 2002 meeting of NEPLS.

The philosophy's there, but it's too late for them to do anything more than the name of the Web 2. And why? Now it means a smaller, younger, more technical group that just decided to make something great. If you work hard at being a bond trader for ten years, just walk around the CS department at a good university. If smaller source code is the purpose of comparing languages, because they will probably use small problems, and will necessarily use predefined problems, will tend to bet wrong. When people say Web 2. Who will? The m. Morale is another reason that it's hard to imagine a language being too succinct is that if you're building something new, you should probably take the organic route. And if it isn't false, it shouldn't be suppressed. Their only hope now is to buy all the best Ajax startups before Google does. Most unpleasant jobs would either get automated or go undone if no one happens to have gotten in trouble for seem harmless now. The quantity of meaning compressed into a small space by algebraic signs, is another circumstance that facilitates the reasonings we are accustomed to carry on by their aid.13 Notice all this time I've been talking about the succinctness of languages, not of individual programs.14 You might find contradictory taboos. There are two routes to that destination: The organic route is more common. But it was also something we'd never considered a computer could be: fabulously well designed.

For example, it is a bad design decision. It seems so convincing when you see statements being attacked as x-ist or y-ic substitute your current values of x and y, whether in 1630 or 2030, that's a sure sign that something is wrong.15 As far as I know, without precedent: Apple is popular at the low end and the high end, but not accurate ones. Surely one had to force oneself to work on them. Bolder investors will now get rewarded with lower prices. Does Web 2.16 But I don't think you can even talk about good or bad design except with reference to some intended user.17 But these words are part of the reason I chose computers.

And if you're ambitious you have to like what you do? Something I noticed right off the bat was the inconsistent tense (past for the first sample and present for the second), but I followed the link for the second reply and realized it was because you were matching your partner’s responses. I think that’s a great thing to do, and it shows your flexibility as a writer. One reason that you might feel less enthusiastic about your second response could be linked to the different tense that you wrote in. Most people write fiction in the past tense, and judging from the first sample, it’s what you’re used to writing too. Changing tenses may have thrown off your internal sense of what’s “good” to you.

One thing that confused me a little bit as someone who isn’t from your fandom was the use of Y’s first and last name interchangeably to refer to him. I figured it out, of course, it was just something I noticed and stumped me in the beginning. It’s not a huge deal, just something I noticed.

In sample 1, I noticed that there was a lot of character depth that was shown to me instead of outright telling me. For example, Y--a doctor--is described as having an “abrasive personality” and a “lack of bed[side]-manners”, which is interesting for a doctor, since doctors are usually portrayed as nurturing and kind. However, contradictory to his outward appearance, he is actually a very thoughtful character, as demonstrated by the fact that he carefully considers X’s feelings and reactions to his instructions. It’s human to have contradictions of character, so I think that’s an interesting touch.

Something I felt was a little confusing was this sentence: “Sometimes his abrasive personality and lack of bed-manners helped, but this time…” I wasn’t sure how the abrasive personality and lack of bed-manners has helped in the past. Perhaps it’s because I lack context due to not being in the fandom, but I felt that the wording and implication of what “helping” has to do with character traits that on a surface level appear unhelpful.

Overall, I think sample 1 is well written and is clear in expressing your muse’s personality and characteristics. I also didn’t notice any grammar mistakes and I felt that it flowed well, considering its structure as a reply.

Sample 2, the one you said you felt a little unsure about, doesn’t have anything particularly glaringly wrong with it. I think that based off of sample 1, Y’s characterization appears consistent. To me, the action sequence is clear and demonstrates a sense of urgency, especially in the character’s thoughts and the bolding of the word “fuck” to further emphasize his distress. There is also an increased number of paragraph breaks, that shows the fragmentation of his thoughts as he tries to focus on a bunch of things at once while staying calm.

One kinda nitpicky thing I noticed was that in the very first sentence, the conjugation is slightly off. It’s correctly written in present tense, but in “It’s a small wonder that the hallways isn’t crowded“, the verb “isn’t” is modifying “the hallways”, which is plural. Therefore, “isn’t” should be “aren’t”. But this is a very nitpicky moment, and I think it’s just an unintentional mistake on your part because your conjugations everywhere else are spot on.

I noticed in a few places, there is a bit of repetition in sentence structure. For example, although these two sentences are different lengths, their internal structure are the same. “Two quick commands and he shuts the terminal off, turning to the wall” and “... a panel is removed and Y grabs the scruff of his copy’s uniform, shoving him to the opening of the Jefferies tube” are both structured in a way where there is a complete sentence and a comma, followed by a fragment starting with an “ing” verb. I only noticed because I have a similar problem with using this particular structure very often. I cut out a piece of the second sentence to fully demonstrate exactly how similar in structure these two sentences really are. They both start with two sentences strung together with ‘and’, then there’s a comma, and there’s a “verb-ing” sentence fragment. If there was one sentence in between to separate them (a short one, perhaps “His eyes quickly skim over the wall”). This may be another reason why you felt a little less satisfied with sample 2 compared to sample 1.

Overall, I think you are a strong writer with a very solid grasp of your character’s personality, motivations, and thought process. I enjoyed reading about Y’s thought processes and how he interacts with the world around him. In terms of general things that could change, I think the replies feel a little bit janky and disconnected at times, but I understand since it’s a reply and your partner may have written some time strange time bending replies. It’s something to look into, especially for improving the flow of your replies in the future.

Gosnell Movie Overcomes All Odds, Shows Reality Of Abortion Industry

The film Hollywood tried to censor which tells the story the media refused to cover is finally set to hit theaters the October 12th, opening in over 600 theaters nationwide.

Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer tells the story of abortionist Kermit Gosnell, who is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole after being convicted on three counts of first-degree murder for infanticide and one count of involuntary manslaughter for the death of patient Karnamaya Mongar.

Following a prescription drug bust in 2010, Gosnell was found to be running an abortion clinic ex-employees called a “house of horrors” after the state government failed to inspect the clinic for over 17 years. The clinic was beyond unsanitary and women were being sedated by unlicensed staff, violating health and safety code. Investigators found Gosnell was performing late-term abortions well over the 24-week limit and according to the Grand Jury Report, Gosnell murdered hundreds of babies who survived his abortion procedures by snipping their spinal cords with scissors. Refrigerators full of preserved baby feet and other body parts from his victims were also discovered.

The Gosnell case may have been written-off as a “local crime story” by mainstream media but producer husband and wife duo, Phelim McAleer and Ann McElhinney, decided to take matters into their own hands.

“I just assumed that once he [Gosnell] was convicted there was going to be a mega movie...So I waited and waited and I realized, wow, no one’s making a movie out of this? That’s because… Hollywood doesn’t want to touch this story or cover this story. So, if they’re not going to do it, then I should do it…. We’ll just make a movie, and we did,” McAleer told LifeNews.

In an exclusive statement, McAleer informed Human Defense Initiative one of the main goals of the film is to help start meaningful conversations about the reality of the abortion industry.

"We just want to bring this true story to people and hope they have conversations based on the truth. So often abortion is a fact-free conversation. In the Gosnell case, those involved intimately in the abortion business were forced to testify underneath about the abortion business and everyone in the court room was shocked. I hope he audience learns a few facts and have conversations based on those facts," McAleer said.

However, their quest to make a movie exposing the truth about Gosnell and the abortion industry has not come without challenges.

The very first challenge arose when they tried to secure funds for the film. McElhinney and McAleer originally tried to start a campaign on Kickstarter, which they had used in the past to raise money for a different film. However, Kickstarter began censoring them, only allowing them to fundraise through the site if they changed the description for the project. Kickstarter requested the terms “murder,” “murdering babies,” and “stabbing babies” be removed from the Gosnell description because the words were deemed offensive to Kickstarter’s community values. McAleer did not want to be “part of a community that has standards that force you to lie,” so they switched their campaign to Indiegogo, raising a record breaking $2.3 million by 30,000 people in just 45 days. After securing the funds, multiple studios and distribution companies rejected the film claiming it was “too controversial.” Once the film was picked up by GVN, the movie’s release was delayed due to the Judge in the Gosnell case suing over the film’s portrayal of him as corrupt.

Now, the film has overcome many obstacles and is playing to packed houses full of captivated audiences in private pre-screenings across the country.

Beginning October 12th, everyone will be able to go see the film which exposes the Gosnell case, abortion industry, media, and local government corruption.

The film is also something we believe everyone should go see. As one of the characters points out in the trailer, “there’s nothing that man did that protects women of children and you don’t have to be a pro-life activist to see that.”

McAleer also told Human Defense Initiative, "we hope everyone will enjoy the movie and be moved by it. It is PG-13 and that was very deliberate— we wanted to make it accessible to a wide range of people. It is not gory. At the pre-screenings people have brought their teenage children and they have loved it."

Although Gosnell has overcome many obstacles, pro-abortion activists are still trying to ban the movie, calling for theaters to back out of showing the film, a move that is to be expected.

"Abortion activists hate the Gosnell movie and are trying to get it banned because they know that it shines a truthful but negative spotlight on abortion an they will not allow that. Abortion is a sacred right for them and they will do whatever they can to protect that right. That is what these Kavanaugh hearings are all about — not sexual assault — it is about protecting abortion," McAleer told us.

Streets of Blood: Generation Identity Attacked by Antifa in the UK

War is peace, ignorance is strength, and Hope Not Hate are definitely not violent communist activists. For whatever reason, it is not permitted in the United Kingdom to say that it is okay to be British. It is evidently so mind-blowingly subversive to consider the shared ethnocultural heritage of Europeans as a good thing that those who say so must be prevented from entering the country, as has happened again to Generation Identity leader, Martin Sellner.

This weekend saw this identitarian group hold their first meeting, attended by around fifty people. Whatever was to be said at the meeting is now up for speculation, as Hope Not Hate decided to use mob-rule to shut it down.

Dr. Joe Mulhall, the senior researcher at Hope Not Hate, told The Independent:

“As an organization, [Generation Identity] remains fairly small here, but it has probably already become the most active far-right organization in the UK, even with its very limited numbers. It’s the new breed.

“While small, they are incredibly active, and the worrying thing is they are very professional, very organized and tech-savvy, and their imagery is very professional. Their website is streets ahead of other far-right groups in Britain. And they’re young."

The claim from this communist group is that Generation is far-right, and therefore literally Hitler. They even have an Austrian leader with a snappy hair-cut, Neville Chamberlain's sake.

I will list for you the core beliefs of Generation Identity:

The ethnocultural identity of Europe has value and should be preserved.

Opposition to multiculturalism, mass immigration, Islamization and The Great Replacement.

Through peaceful activism Generation Identity wish to broach these topics with the silent majority and begin a public discussion on these subjects.

The response of any goodthinking person is surely to accept the opinion of Hope Not Hate, a state-funded communist group, at face value and attend the event at their behest in order to visit violence upon strangers. These vile people, who have gathered to talk about their concerns about the future faced by their children. Some goodthinking and noble local women even brought their own young children to a situation that they intended to make violent. Imagine looking at your own child, and in good conscience taking them to punch Nazis, about whose ideas you know only what you have been told by literal communists. Of course, Hope Not Hate say that these innocuous ideas about European identity is "coded prejudice." It doesn't matter what you say, it only matters what Hope Not Hate say you are saying.

Groups like Antifa and Hope Not Hate, through intimidation of citizens and harassment of venues, will prevent uncomfortable truths being spoken. They will protect you from yourself. The British Government itself is aiming to criminalize the viewing of so-called far-right material online in the United Kingdom, as detailed in this excellent video by The Iconoclast.

Who decides what is far right? Are the public ever asked if they find these ideas to be abhorrent, or if they might have a point? Of course not; our civilization is so far removed from even engaging with these ideas that words are met with fists. Here follows video footage of the events, clearly showing masked Antifa thugs attacking people in the street, in broad daylight.

This is England.

This past weekend also saw the 50th anniversary of Enoch Powell's Rivers of Blood speech, which we will reprint in full at the end of this article. For the crime of describing reality accurately, Powell was ruined as a politician, denounced as a racist, and his legacy tarnished forever. Powell as a man was exemplary. An Indophile who spoke Hindi and Urdu, his command of Classical Greek was such that he produced the peerless A Lexicon to Herodotus in 1938 while still a student, and took his professorship at the age of 25. This post he resigned on the outbreak of World War II, seeing the danger of Hitler, rising to become the youngest Brigadier in the Commonwealth, the same as he had been the youngest professor. The point I am making is not just that Powell, dead these past 20 years, was a man possessed of singular intellect and therefore he was right- that is not logical. He was a man of singular intellect and a product of a system that produced many such men; if that turn of phrase does not bend the English language too much. It is a tragedy that we seem not to make such Englishmen today. The point I am making is that such a man lived, was not so dissimilar in opinion on immigration from his party leader and future Prime Minister, Edward Heath; but for speaking truth plainly, he was destroyed. It mattered not one jot that Powell was a scholar, professor, military commander, and decidedly lacking in bigotry of any kind.

What hope then for men such as you and I, to express ourselves in these days, to convince the world of the prophetic truths of Powell's speech? The problems we face transcend the brutish label of far-right, whatever that even means anymore. For two generations the reality that Europeans are under existential threat through immigration has been presented -successfully- as a lie perpetuated by fascists. The possibility that this framing of the conversation is incorrect is also denounced as a lie perpetuated by fascists. It is fascist to notice it, it is fascist to speak of it. It is fascist to allow oneself to hear it. This is what it means to be far right these days; thinking about topics that the globalist state does not want you to think about. Demographics. Identity. Immigration. Ideologies. You must not think of these things, there is only one demography, only one identity, only one nation, only one ideology. One vision of the future- and it's a future in which your nation, your people, no longer exists.

And so, I come full circle to the Generation Identity meeting. This small group is denounced not because they are genocidal racists- there is nothing in their words or actions that suggests this is so. In fact, it requires the analysis of self-proclaimed experts like Hope Not Hate to tell us that this group is far-right and therefore badthink. I would hope that anyone reading this can spot that it is a very bad idea to listen to one perspective alone- but it is this group who are informing the press and government bodies on what is and is not extremist. This group, pro-migration, pro-Islamification, pro-Antifa, claims to understand the difference between Hope and Hate. If that is so, their chief Nick Lowles can inform me by right of reply on these pages exactly what it is that is hopeful about his organization's failure to answer the questions posed by Generation Identity. I would imagine that these questions about population dynamics, demography and culture should be easy to answer if they are only motivated by "hate." It is easy to defeat the bigot, because the bigot is incapable of thinking for themselves clearly; this is why you see a bigot dancing around the attendees of the Generation Identity meeting, squealing that he has found the heretic in the midst of Kent, and all good townsfolk must rise up to burn the witches. This is bigotry, this is intolerance- this squashing of difficult ideas is a cancer in the blood of my countrymen.

My advice is to listen to as many different voices as you can and, most importantly, look to the evidence. Look to reality as much as you dare, stare into the abyss of unfeeling truth. I did so, and changed my mind on many things. For this act alone, I too have been denounced as far right, as a Nazi, as a racist and fascist. It has led to this magazine being censored by one of the most powerful businesses on the planet. All this, in four months of operation for Republic Standard. What is so dangerous about these ideas that we speak of that they must not be spoken? Is not the failure to address the concerns of the day an utter abdication of responsibility by our leaders? Is that not where the genesis of Generation Identity lies?

The question is simple; are we adult human beings with the ability to self-determine our futures and to contend with the world and all her problems, or permanent children, to be kept sedated by trash-culture, consumerism and a comforting, false portrayal of reality?

Over to Mr. Powell.

The supreme function of statesmanship is to provide against preventable evils. In seeking to do so, it encounters obstacles which are deeply rooted in human nature.

One is that by the very order of things such evils are not demonstrable until they have occurred: at each stage in their onset there is room for doubt and for dispute whether they be real or imaginary. By the same token, they attract little attention in comparison with current troubles, which are both indisputable and pressing: whence the besetting temptation of all politics to concern itself with the immediate present at the expense of the future.

Above all, people are disposed to mistake predicting troubles for causing troubles and even for desiring troubles: "If only," they love to think, "if only people wouldn't talk about it, it probably wouldn't happen."

Perhaps this habit goes back to the primitive belief that the word and the thing, the name and the object, are identical.

At all events, the discussion of future grave but, with effort now, avoidable evils is the most unpopular and at the same time the most necessary occupation for the politician. Those who knowingly shirk it deserve, and not infrequently receive, the curses of those who come after.

A week or two ago I fell into conversation with a constituent, a middle-aged, quite ordinary working man employed in one of our nationalised industries.

After a sentence or two about the weather, he suddenly said: "If I had the money to go, I wouldn't stay in this country." I made some deprecatory reply to the effect that even this government wouldn't last for ever; but he took no notice, and continued: "I have three children, all of them been through grammar school and two of them married now, with family. I shan't be satisfied till I have seen them all settled overseas. In this country in 15 or 20 years' time the black man will have the whip hand over the white man."

I can already hear the chorus of execration. How dare I say such a horrible thing? How dare I stir up trouble and inflame feelings by repeating such a conversation?

The answer is that I do not have the right not to do so. Here is a decent, ordinary fellow Englishman, who in broad daylight in my own town says to me, his Member of Parliament, that his country will not be worth living in for his children.

I simply do not have the right to shrug my shoulders and think about something else. What he is saying, thousands and hundreds of thousands are saying and thinking - not throughout Great Britain, perhaps, but in the areas that are already undergoing the total transformation to which there is no parallel in a thousand years of English history.

In 15 or 20 years, on present trends, there will be in this country three and a half million Commonwealth immigrants and their descendants. That is not my figure. That is the official figure given to parliament by the spokesman of the Registrar General's Office.

There is no comparable official figure for the year 2000, but it must be in the region of five to seven million, approximately one-tenth of the whole population, and approaching that of Greater London. Of course, it will not be evenly distributed from Margate to Aberystwyth and from Penzance to Aberdeen. Whole areas, towns and parts of towns across England will be occupied by sections of the immigrant and immigrant-descended population.

As time goes on, the proportion of this total who are immigrant descendants, those born in England, who arrived here by exactly the same route as the rest of us, will rapidly increase. Already by 1985 the native-born would constitute the majority. It is this fact which creates the extreme urgency of action now, of just that kind of action which is hardest for politicians to take, action where the difficulties lie in the present but the evils to be prevented or minimised lie several parliaments ahead.

The natural and rational first question with a nation confronted by such a prospect is to ask: "How can its dimensions be reduced?" Granted it be not wholly preventable, can it be limited, bearing in mind that numbers are of the essence: the significance and consequences of an alien element introduced into a country or population are profoundly different according to whether that element is 1 per cent or 10 per cent.

The answers to the simple and rational question are equally simple and rational: by stopping, or virtually stopping, further inflow, and by promoting the maximum outflow. Both answers are part of the official policy of the Conservative Party.

It almost passes belief that at this moment 20 or 30 additional immigrant children are arriving from overseas in Wolverhampton alone every week - and that means 15 or 20 additional families a decade or two hence. Those whom the gods wish to destroy, they first make mad. We must be mad, literally mad, as a nation to be permitting the annual inflow of some 50,000 dependants, who are for the most part the material of the future growth of the immigrant-descended population. It is like watching a nation busily engaged in heaping up its own funeral pyre. So insane are we that we actually permit unmarried persons to immigrate for the purpose of founding a family with spouses and fiancés whom they have never seen.

Let no one suppose that the flow of dependants will automatically tail off. On the contrary, even at the present admission rate of only 5,000 a year by voucher, there is sufficient for a further 25,000 dependants per annum ad infinitum, without taking into account the huge reservoir of existing relations in this country - and I am making no allowance at all for fraudulent entry. In these circumstances nothing will suffice but that the total inflow for settlement should be reduced at once to negligible proportions, and that the necessary legislative and administrative measures be taken without delay.

I stress the words "for settlement." This has nothing to do with the entry of Commonwealth citizens, any more than of aliens, into this country, for the purposes of study or of improving their qualifications, like (for instance) the Commonwealth doctors who, to the advantage of their own countries, have enabled our hospital service to be expanded faster than would otherwise have been possible. They are not, and never have been, immigrants.

I turn to re-emigration. If all immigration ended tomorrow, the rate of growth of the immigrant and immigrant-descended population would be substantially reduced, but the prospective size of this element in the population would still leave the basic character of the national danger unaffected. This can only be tackled while a considerable proportion of the total still comprises persons who entered this country during the last ten years or so.

Hence the urgency of implementing now the second element of the Conservative Party's policy: the encouragement of re-emigration.

Nobody can make an estimate of the numbers which, with generous assistance, would choose either to return to their countries of origin or to go to other countries anxious to receive the manpower and the skills they represent.

Nobody knows, because no such policy has yet been attempted. I can only say that, even at present, immigrants in my own constituency from time to time come to me, asking if I can find them assistance to return home. If such a policy were adopted and pursued with the determination which the gravity of the alternative justifies, the resultant outflow could appreciably alter the prospects.

The third element of the Conservative Party's policy is that all who are in this country as citizens should be equal before the law and that there shall be no discrimination or difference made between them by public authority. As Mr Heath has put it we will have no "first-class citizens" and "second-class citizens." This does not mean that the immigrant and his descendent should be elevated into a privileged or special class or that the citizen should be denied his right to discriminate in the management of his own affairs between one fellow-citizen and another or that he should be subjected to imposition as to his reasons and motive for behaving in one lawful manner rather than another.

There could be no grosser misconception of the realities than is entertained by those who vociferously demand legislation as they call it "against discrimination", whether they be leader-writers of the same kidney and sometimes on the same newspapers which year after year in the 1930s tried to blind this country to the rising peril which confronted it, or archbishops who live in palaces, faring delicately with the bedclothes pulled right up over their heads. They have got it exactly and diametrically wrong.

The discrimination and the deprivation, the sense of alarm and of resentment, lies not with the immigrant population but with those among whom they have come and are still coming.

This is why to enact legislation of the kind before parliament at this moment is to risk throwing a match on to gunpowder. The kindest thing that can be said about those who propose and support it is that they know not what they do.

Nothing is more misleading than comparison between the Commonwealth immigrant in Britain and the American Negro. The Negro population of the United States, which was already in existence before the United States became a nation, started literally as slaves and were later given the franchise and other rights of citizenship, to the exercise of which they have only gradually and still incompletely come. The Commonwealth immigrant came to Britain as a full citizen, to a country which knew no discrimination between one citizen and another, and he entered instantly into the possession of the rights of every citizen, from the vote to free treatment under the National Health Service.

Whatever drawbacks attended the immigrants arose not from the law or from public policy or from administration, but from those personal circumstances and accidents which cause, and always will cause, the fortunes and experience of one man to be different from another's.

But while, to the immigrant, entry to this country was admission to privileges and opportunities eagerly sought, the impact upon the existing population was very different. For reasons which they could not comprehend, and in pursuance of a decision by default, on which they were never consulted, they found themselves made strangers in their own country.

They found their wives unable to obtain hospital beds in childbirth, their children unable to obtain school places, their homes and neighbourhoods changed beyond recognition, their plans and prospects for the future defeated; at work they found that employers hesitated to apply to the immigrant worker the standards of discipline and competence required of the native-born worker; they began to hear, as time went by, more and more voices which told them that they were now the unwanted. They now learn that a one-way privilege is to be established by act of parliament; a law which cannot, and is not intended to, operate to protect them or redress their grievances is to be enacted to give the stranger, the disgruntled and the agent-provocateur the power to pillory them for their private actions.

In the hundreds upon hundreds of letters I received when I last spoke on this subject two or three months ago, there was one striking feature which was largely new and which I find ominous. All Members of Parliament are used to the typical anonymous correspondent; but what surprised and alarmed me was the high proportion of ordinary, decent, sensible people, writing a rational and often well-educated letter, who believed that they had to omit their address because it was dangerous to have committed themselves to paper to a Member of Parliament agreeing with the views I had expressed, and that they would risk penalties or reprisals if they were known to have done so. The sense of being a persecuted minority which is growing among ordinary English people in the areas of the country which are affected is something that those without direct experience can hardly imagine.

I am going to allow just one of those hundreds of people to speak for me:

“Eight years ago in a respectable street in Wolverhampton a house was sold to a Negro. Now only one white (a woman old-age pensioner) lives there. This is her story. She lost her husband and both her sons in the war. So she turned her seven-roomed house, her only asset, into a boarding house. She worked hard and did well, paid off her mortgage and began to put something by for her old age. Then the immigrants moved in. With growing fear, she saw one house after another taken over. The quiet street became a place of noise and confusion. Regretfully, her white tenants moved out.

“The day after the last one left, she was awakened at 7am by two Negroes who wanted to use her 'phone to contact their employer. When she refused, as she would have refused any stranger at such an hour, she was abused and feared she would have been attacked but for the chain on her door. Immigrant families have tried to rent rooms in her house, but she always refused. Her little store of money went, and after paying rates, she has less than £2 per week. “She went to apply for a rate reduction and was seen by a young girl, who on hearing she had a seven-roomed house, suggested she should let part of it. When she said the only people she could get were Negroes, the girl said, "Racial prejudice won't get you anywhere in this country." So she went home.

“The telephone is her lifeline. Her family pay the bill, and help her out as best they can. Immigrants have offered to buy her house - at a price which the prospective landlord would be able to recover from his tenants in weeks, or at most a few months. She is becoming afraid to go out. Windows are broken. She finds excreta pushed through her letter box. When she goes to the shops, she is followed by children, charming, wide-grinning piccaninnies. They cannot speak English, but one word they know. "Racialist," they chant. When the new Race Relations Bill is passed, this woman is convinced she will go to prison. And is she so wrong? I begin to wonder.”

The other dangerous delusion from which those who are wilfully or otherwise blind to realities suffer, is summed up in the word "integration." To be integrated into a population means to become for all practical purposes indistinguishable from its other members.

Now, at all times, where there are marked physical differences, especially of colour, integration is difficult though, over a period, not impossible. There are among the Commonwealth immigrants who have come to live here in the last fifteen years or so, many thousands whose wish and purpose is to be integrated and whose every thought and endeavour is bent in that direction.

But to imagine that such a thing enters the heads of a great and growing majority of immigrants and their descendants is a ludicrous misconception, and a dangerous one.

We are on the verge here of a change.
