CSA WEEK 2
P i c k l i s t
strawberries - garlic scapes - basil - lettuce - broccolini - hakurai turnips - cucumbers - plants!
I did not intend to go right into week 2 with a weather charged sob story, but here we are. The heat followed by the rain did not demolish crops, but it certainly did not help. Watching the storm roll through and hit the fields was tough on the heart. First and foremost, let’s talk about strawberries and rain. The two quarts you are receiving today are a part of an effort to clean off the current fruit and make way for the next flush. It is likely that your 2 quarts of berries may not be the sparkly shiny gems we all lust for, but they will absolutely serve a delicious purpose if eaten today or tomorrow, or, use them to make a jammy sauce to complement every biscuit in sight, ahem strawberry shortcakes (see pro tips). Because of the past week’s precipitation, this round of berries will not hold. But the later varieties should (weather dependent, lol).
Another unfortunate arrival this week are all the pests. I am not entirely certain why they all decided to show up at the sametime, but I've been squashing countless horn worms in the tomato greenhouses and the wire worms are really starting to show their face and make trails in our radishes and our (legendary 2024) hakurai turnip patch. And don’t even get me started on the deer. Daily cute love notes I like to send to Ray have been replaced by deer eating lettuce photos, deer eating strawberries photos, and deer eating cucumber photos. Not an easy time to farm, but a hell of a great time to be a pest. Some would say, it's buck wild.
MEANWHILE, in the Pick Your Own Strawberry patch, the berries are still showing up, and people are still so pumped to pick. It’s awesome to hear from Anne and Jen about all the CSAers that have made their way down River Road this week to get in on the action. I do hope to see yall out there as it is certainly the season for stained red fingers/ a belly full of berries/ late night strawberry jamming/ etc.

FARMY FOODIE PRO-TIPS:
Yall, get ready, and let me introduce you to new neighbor Mitchell!
Somehow by the grace of something, Edgewater has been blessed by a neighbor that not only knows how to cook, but also has stacks and stacks of tested recipes. We connected a few months ago when he popped into the greenhouses. At that time, much of what you are currently eating from the farm existed in seed packs, waiting to be sewed. Since then these seeds have sprouted into food and Mitchell is here to tell us how to eat it best. Thank heavens for resident chef Mitchell Davis, as a result we all get to try new things and prep this bounty in new ways! I AM JAZZED. If you too are jazzed, I highly recommend subscribing for free to his weekly newsletter Kitchen Sense,
Pickled Garlic Scapes recipe by mitchell!
Similar in flavor to kosher dill pickles because of their strong garlic flavor, these lacto-fermented garlic scape pickles require little effort beyond patience. They will last in the refrigerator for over a year. (I just shared some two-year old ones with Jenny and they were still delicious.) Eat
them as is or slice them to add to salads (egg, tuna, chicken, potato), or relish, or anywhere you might think to add pickles or capers.
I’m not giving amounts for this recipe because this is more of a technique (one you can use with just about any vegetable). Adjust the amounts accordingly, adding more brine in the same proportion as you need to submerge your scapes. Use kosher salt or pickling salt, not table salt,
the iodine in which will cause the pickles to discolor Kosher salt
Hot water
Garlic Scapes
Other aromatics, such as bay leaf, dill seeds or flowering dill, yellow mustard seeds (optional)As for most lacto-fermented foods, your goal is to create a brine that is a 2.5 to 3% saline solution. That means for every 1000 milliliters of water, 25 to 30 grams of salt, or about 2 teaspoons of kosher salt per cup. Place 2 tablespoons and 2 teaspoons kosher salt in a mixing
bowl and add 1 quart (4 cups) hot water. Stir to dissolve the salt. Let sit to come back to room temperature, stirring occasionally to make sure no salt crystals remain at the bottom of the bowl.
Meanwhile, prepare the garlic scapes. Rinse the scapes and cut into 2-inch lengths just up until the bud, which you should discard. Tightly pack the cut scapes into clean canning jars, using the shoulder of the jar to wedge the scapes in. I like to use pint jars. If using aromatics, add a bay
leaf, ½ teaspoon of dill or mustard seeds, and/or some flowering dill to each jar. Once the brine is cool, fill each jar until the scapes are completely submerged. Cover the jars loosely and let sit at room temperature, out of the sun, for 5 to 7 days to ferment until your desired level of tartness. The timing will depend on the temperature of your room. Open the jars once a day to
release any gas that builds up. As the fermentation takes place, the liquid will turn cloudy, and the scapes will darken and sink. Taste them to check if they are done. When satisfied with their flavor, seal the jars and refrigerate until needed. You can strain the brine and repack the scapes
if you like a cleaner look, but it isn’t necessary.

Here it is, everyone's summertime favorite: fresh, sweet strawberries atop a flaky, buttery biscuit — topped with whipped cream, of course!
PREP 25 min/ BAKE 10 to 12 mins/ TOTAL 1 hr 35 mins YIELD 9 biscuits
Berries
2 quarts (1336g) strawberries, trimmed of their leaves
1/2 cup (99g) granulated sugar
2 teaspoons lemon juice, fresh preferred
Biscuits
3 1/2 cups (420g) King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
1 teaspoon table salt
1 tablespoon (11g) baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup (36g) buttermilk powder
3 tablespoons (35g) granulated sugar
8 tablespoons (113g) unsalted butter or 1/2 cup (92g) vegetable shortening, cold
2 teaspoons King Arthur Pure Vanilla Extract
1 large egg
1 cup (227g) milk*
2 teaspoons milk, optional; for topping
2 teaspoons granulated sugar, optional; for topping
*Or substitute 1 cup buttermilk (227g) for the buttermilk powder and milk
Topping
1 cup (227g) whipping cream
Instructions
To prepare the fruit: Mash 2 cups of the strawberries. Slice the remaining strawberries, and mix all of the berries with the sugar and lemon juice. Let rest 1 hour.
Preheat the oven to 425°F. Lightly grease a baking sheet, or line it with parchment.
To make the biscuits: Whisk together the dry ingredients, and work in the cold butter or shortening until the mixture is crumbly.
Whisk the vanilla and egg with the milk, then add all at once to the dry ingredients and stir until the liquid is absorbed.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead four or five times, just until it holds together. Pat the dough out until it's about 1/2" to 3/4" thick, and cut it into 2 1/2" to 3" circles.
Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, brush the tops with milk for a shiny surface, and sprinkle with sugar.
Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until the tops are golden brown. Remove them from the oven and cool for 15 minutes before serving.
To assemble the shortcakes: Whip the cream until soft peaks form.
Just before serving, split open the biscuits, spoon half the berries and whipped cream on the bottom half, top with remaining biscuit halves, and spoon on the remaining berries and cream.
Tips from our Bakers
For highest-rising biscuits, use a sharp biscuit cutter, rather than a drinking glass. A sharp cutter cuts the edges cleanly, rather than mashing them together; a sharp cut allows the biscuits to rise higher.

“But you know something? If I couldn’t get you laid, at least I gave you a good first date.”feat: footsies at a Ruby Tuesday, stargazing, the recreation of an iconic "Dirty Dancing" scene (no, not that one—the other one), and practicing for When You're With A Girl.

post season 6
Someone Who's Feeling For Me by ellispark Words: 45,876 Chapters: 1
Dean sees her for the first time in nearly six years in some no-name town in Idaho, and it's panic at first sight.
Lisa Braeden, the one woman Dean ever actually had a shot at a real life with, back from where he buried her in his mind. And her hand is on Cas's arm like it's no big deal, like it belongs there. Cas, Dean's dorky, sweet, badass, angelic best friend, and he's just standing there next to Lisa and not moving her hand away.
Dean feels the jealousy rising, and it's not directed where he expected it to be. Because it takes this exact moment for Dean to realize he's in love with his best friend. He's in love with his best friend, and Lisa is looking at Cas like he's the best thing since automatic rifles, and Dean is utterly fucked.
post bunker
Sun Can't Set Until Nine by LeverDrift Words: 67,939 Chapters: 16
Cas moves into the bunker as his powers start to fail. Dean doesn’t know if the arrangement is as permanent as he wants it to be. He's also not sure why he keeps dreaming about his friend. All he knows is that he wants Cas to stay. Overall warnings: canon-typical miscommunication & Dean having self-hatred issues.
Life Skills by ilovehowyouletmefall Words: 26,052 Chapters: 3
After Metatron steals Castiel's grace, and Cas comes to live in the bunker, Dean spends a lot of time with him, sharing all of his favourite things. Dean can't help it if sharing things with Cas just makes everything better. Besides, it's Dean's job as Cas' friend to introduce him to the joys of human life. To teach him how to be human. And if one of the experiences they end up sharing is sex with women, well... that's just part of Dean's job as Cas' friend too, right? The desire is triangulated, the rituals are intricate.
Sam Stole My Boyfriend by sobsicles Words: 8,445 Chapters: 1
“Dude, you’ve been staring at me a lot lately, like even enough that Sam noticed. More than usual. So, like, what’s up?” Dean pauses, purses his lips and reconsiders. “What did I do?”
Cas knows that would be a perfect time to confess to Dean what exactly happened and what he was thinking. Maybe, Dean had some insight into the situation or even some kind of comfort to offer. But, the longer that he sat there, he realized that he could not tell Dean absolutely anything. So instead, for the first time, Cas fumbled.
“Um,” Cas mutters and abruptly stands. “Freckles?”
Dean blinked up at him as Cas pivoted and left the room. There was only one remaining option he had and unfortunately, it involved Sam.
Aching in the Absence of You by sobsicles Words: 95,090 Chapters: 10
Brittle and battle-worn, Cas looks at him over coffee one morning and says, "I need to go," and Dean instantly knows that he's not coming back.
He's not really sure how he knows it, but he does. It settles into the pit of his stomach, curling hot and tight like something he instinctively wants to tear out with his bare hands. He takes a breath, and it gets stuck in his throat, hitching there. It hurts, hurts, hurts when he finally exhales.
"Yeah," Dean says, "of course you do," and he nods jerkily as he looks down at his phone. He doesn't say goodbye. He doesn't look up from the screen when Cas gets up and leaves the room. He doesn't finish his coffee, or move for a long time.
By nightfall, Cas is gone.
'Communication' by JustAnotherSamlicker Words: 11,656
The same story told from two perspectives.
Dean bought a house and he and Cas fix it up.
Is Dean moving out? Is Cas moving in?
Should they just talk to each other already? (Yes they should)
Build a Home by domesticadventures Words: 20,102
After they save the world, Dean expects Cas to come back to the bunker with them.
He doesn't
season 10
The Most Important Thing by NorthernSparrow Words: 94,462 Chapters: 14
Jimmy Novak remembers nothing of the last six years. Reunited with his troubled daughter Claire, he's struggling to raise her on his own. The most important thing is to make Claire happy. But why does he keep having these dreams of wings, and of two men in a black car? (Canon-divergent from S10E11, when we first met Claire again and Dean was still struggling with the Mark of Cain. Takes places several months later).
season 12
Heroes for Ghosts by pantheon_of_discord Words: 42,922 Chapters: 7
Canon-divergent from 12.08
After Sam and Dean are arrested, Castiel is left alone and scrambling to find them. He knows they’re locked away in a government facility, and he’s still able to hear their prayers, but no matter how he tries Castiel can’t seem to track them. He chases leads and even attempts to hunt on his own, but Mary is AWOL, Crowley refuses to help, and Castiel’s options are running out.
Weeks pass, Castiel’s hope dwindles, and through it all Dean prays, keeping them connected. His voice is comforting, frustrating, and occasionally annoying, but in his solitude Castiel comes to cherish it. But then one day, without warning, Dean stops praying, and Castiel is forced to confront some uncomfortable truths about his feelings.
season 13
i want to do with you (what spring does with cherry trees) by sobsicles Words: 74,173 Chapters: 8
Dean keeps going back.
When he arrives, it's always to blooming flowers and a windmill in the background, not too far from a brook, the sun painting the plains.
He likes it there. He likes to stand in front of the makeshift urn and check that it's still where he put it, switching out the flowers when they wilt. He likes to listen to the sound of birds chirping, insects singing, the faint sound of water trickling in the distance. He likes to turn his face up and feel the sun on his skin, wondering if Cas would do the same if he were here, somehow knowing that he would.
He likes to talk.
There's never a response, but Dean feels the breeze rustle through his hair and watches the flowers bob when bees come to them and stares as the windmill keeps turning, turning, turning. And he imagines that Cas is replying—the windmill is the tilted head, the bobbing flowers are a gentle smile, the breeze is whatever words Dean wants to hear at the time.
Sometimes, it's almost like he's there.
Trial and Tribulations of Raising a Nephilim by Sickandtiredofyou Words: 14,910 Chapters: 6
Dean has far too much on his plate, losing his mom, his best friend and now being a single parent to a newborn nephilim.
In which Jack is an actual newborn instead of a teenager.
post season 13
dumbassery, denial, doing (the three d's to the destination) by sobsicles Words: 108,427 Chapters: 4
Freedom is just one adjustment after the next.
Cas hums again. "I think you already have. It's been months since everything settled. All that's left to do is...get used to it, and perhaps—" His voice stalls out, uncharacteristically, and his gaze roams Dean's face with intensity. When he speaks next, his tone is a little raw. "Perhaps what one does with peace is...whatever they want."
"What if I don't even know what that is?" Dean grumbles, arching an eyebrow in challenge. "'Cause I know damn well you don't just mean good food and a good bed and time in Baby, not simple wants like that. You mean—ya know, the big things, the wants we didn't get to have before."
"Yes," Cas agrees. "If you're not sure, figure it out."
"Easier said than done."
Reasons to read this:
Dean reads a story that ends like despair and his reaction is FUCK THAT
Cas wears Dean's hoodie
Jack is a toddler
The Jack and Claire sibling energy we deserve
Eileen being awesome and pulling pranks with Dean while Sam thinks she's an angel
Sam knows
YOUR HONOR THEY'RE IN LOVE
First Date by aeli_kindara Words: 8,968 Chapters: 1
“We should go on a date. You and me.”
Castiel wishes he could see Dean’s face. He wishes he had any idea what to say.
“I’m asking you out, Cas.”
Also known as the Dean Winchester makes the first move fic.
season 14
Broken Road by thegeminisage Words: 109,629 Chapters: 7
A 14.13 Lebanon rewrite. When Dean uses a wish-granting pearl to try and kill the archangel Michael before he can escape the cage in Dean's head, they instead wind up with a newly-resurrected John Winchester.
It's been more than a decade since John died, and a lot has changed: Mary is alive, Sam and Dean have what passes for a proper home in the Men of Letters Bunker, and they're living with angels. John doesn't know angels are real, he doesn't know about the fragile new relationship between Dean and Castiel, and most of all, he doesn't know that Dean said yes to Michael, or that Dean's plan to defeat Michael would send him to a fate worse than death.
Now Dean must contend with both his father asking questions he can't answer, and his loved ones learning about the darker truths of his childhood, all while constantly battling the archangel trapped inside him. But Dean coming to terms with his history may be the difference between this being the beginning of a journey—or the end.
post season 15
fools and pilgrims by lagaudiere Words: 31,904 Chapters: 2
Claire shows up at the bunker a day before Dean was planning to leave, with her hair cut short and a fresh tattoo on her left arm under a bandage. Chuck is dead, Jack has given up his godlike powers, and Cas is back from the Empty, which doesn't make it any easier for Dean to talk to him. Suddenly finding himself in a world without monsters, supernatural forces, or any need for hunters, Dean's solution is to go on a road trip. Claire tags along.
Dean-Claire mirror fic post Despair
what's missing is found (our souls can exhale now) by sobsicles Words: 27,403
It's not the first time Claire has ever gone missing. It is, however, the first time Kaia panics about it. Dean's dragged into the mess, but he soon finds that it's the best thing that could have happened to him.
canon(?) au (Hunters and Men of Letters)
Dean Winchester's Secret (Angel) Boyfriend by reluctantabandon, Winter_of_our_Discontent Words: 11,191 Chapters: 1
Dean Winchester isn't exactly a team player. So when he starts mentioning a new Hunting partner, Ellen and Jo Harvelle aren't sure whether they should be worried or relieved.
But they're starting to get the feeling there's something important Dean's not telling them about Cas...
Shot Through The Heart by peanutbutterjelly-pie (Aleakim) Words: 11,191 Chapters: 1
Dean is a hunter.
Castiel is a Man of Letters.
And even though they have to work together on a regular basis, there is not much sympathy between them. Castiel thinks Dean too brash and reckless while Dean in return sees nothing more in the other man than a rude asshole with an obsessive love for books and a truly terrible fashion sense.
But fate clearly has a funny way of throwing those two together over and over again.
And somewhere along the way feelings change into something neither of them would have expected.

Fanfic Rec List (mostly Timeless)
Since starting this blog, I created 24 fanfic sketchnotes & I can now create a mosaic that covers nearly a square meter. So, in celebration of all these amazing stories I got to recommend, join me in this (massive) compilation post with links to all the stories & the sketchnotes (for more detail on my recommendations). I categorized the stories and I wish to celebrate all you amazing writers & artists today! Thank you for sharing your stories & art.
I hope you forgive the massive amount of namedropping I am about to do. (Also: I love reading the responses when people see my sketchnotes - so feel free to respond, sent me a note or engage in conversations :-) ). I’m also always on the lookout for more stories to read: I particularly like found family, recovery, mission fic, general or rare pair stories & maturity in characters & conversations. I like adults leaving teen drama behind and dealing with things like the adults they are. Angst is a favorite too, and I enjoy the multiverse of AUs. (Honestly: I’m a pretty eclectic reader).
Timeless
The show that pulled me back into fandom & fanfic & to all you wonderful people. The full list is under a read-more, cause this post got LONG.
Historical / Mission
The Only Way Out by @sallyexactly
Author’s summary: Chinatown leaves the team shattered and grieving, but their only option is to stumble forward. To save the world, they'll need strength of character they didn't know they had, to defeat depths of evil like they've never seen. Meanwhile, they need to find a way to decide their own future, not give up hope... and save the fighting for the actual bad guys. It's honestly a toss-up which of those will be hardest.
This story is my headcanon of how the series ended. It is long (300000+ words) but well-worth it. It's got history, slow and mature development and an intelligent resolution. I reread it frequently and although I have wanted to capture my response in a (series of) sketchnote, I never managed it to my satisfaction. The story is beautiful and feels cathartic (and well-worth rereading over and over).

Vampire AU. Ongoing story that fascinates me to no end. Reading any snippit I can get my hands on. Garcia/Lorena/Lucy & Jiya/Rufus relationships. The E-rated parts are clearly marked and can be skipped if it’s not your cup of tea. Currently at 47403 words.

Murdervision. Assassin AU. Got me giggling all the way through. 12224 words. Rated mature.
Amehrana by Redgold (@timelesshonesttrailer) - my sketchnote
Food Truck AU. Found family. Wholesome. Mature people. Lorena is awesome. 32589 words.
Lorena Lives
Rise Like a Reckoning by @amandamonroe - my sketchnote
Author’s summary: ‘"Lorena Flynn Has a Chance" Ex-CIA agent Lorena Flynn is back. She's got her daughter, her husband, and the woman who saved their lives years ago. She's taking command of the bunker and taking Rittenhouse down.’ Lorena/Garcia/Lucy hinted at towards the end. 6483 words.
Blood Sins - A #FlynnFriday Imagines Series (E-rated) by @doctorliamsr, @timelesshonesttrailer & @ununpredictableme - my sketchnote
See above. Also: Iris lives!
Amehrana by Redgold (@timelesshonesttrailer) - my sketchnote
See above. Yes, I’m recommending this twice. :-)
Due to the nature of the show, there are not many stories in which Lorena lives. I particularly like the Lorena focused stories that RedGold, @sallyexactly, @omnicat & @amandamonroe write. Lorena & Iris deserved better and these stories bring depth, humanity and grace to Lorena & her choices. I reread them frequently and recommend you do the same. These authors are amazing.
Recovery & Healing
To Find a Home by @misscrazyfangirl321 - my sketchnote
Rufus & Jiya & Garcia friendship. Extending grace. 4529 words.
A Butterfly Garden by @vita-s-west - my sketchnote

Lucy’s processing her time in Rittenhouse & Garcia holds space for her. Soft & dark & visceral. 1225 words.
Q&A by @somekindofflowergirl - my sketchnote
Author’s summary: “Lucy and Flynn develop a routine during their nighttime chats. She's allowed one loaded question and he's allowed one loaded apology.” 22176 words
The Road Ode by @sallyexactly - my sketchnote
See above. This roadtrip fic inspired my own roadtrip where we found ourselves in Friedrichshafen, Germany and the Zeppelin museum there were there was a whole exposition on the Hindenburg. Felt very serendipidous.
Honorable mentions (especially in these pandemic times):
Disease Protocols for Time Travellers by hjea (594 words)
Also, I’d like to give a shoutout to @battleshipgarcy for their fan archive sites & meta posts with screenshots of the journal & all the meta content. I love seeing all those small details highlighted! (Plus: their Maria Thompkins in their story The Road Less Traveled intrigues me to no end!)
Other Fandoms
Hunger Games - A Standing Engagement (E-rated) by @bettsfic - my sketchnote.
Annie & Finnick AU within Hunger Games world. 56760 words. The Food Wars are so very appropriate in the Hunger Games world. It’s fascinating how well betts incorporates exisiting Hunger Games context into this story: this feels like it could have happened.

Ongoing story. Post-canon. I love Churki & Hammond together & how Hammond especially gets out-manouvered. 20730 words.
White Collar - In Your Wildest Dreams by sahiya - my sketchnote
Post-canon. Sara Ellis focused. Author’s summary ”This was what grief did to you, Sara knew. It played tricks on your mind. But if it wasn’t Neal, then who could it be? Who else would send her an anonymous packet detailing all the ways someone could knock over the Louvre?” 14289 words.
White Collar - I’ve been bingereading the stories by Sholio. Especially the stories focused on Diana Barrigan. They are a delight. Breakout is especially bad-ass Diana (in heels nonetheless!)
I started this blog to show my appreciation of those wonderful fanfic stories that have entertained me endlessly and engage with these amazing artists (and other people in fandom who share my enthusiasm!) This recommendation list is obviously incomplete and I welcome additions & conversations!

Jersey on my mind (part 33)
The large round eyes, belonging to the auburn fox, flutter from left and right, back to left, before it takes a deep breath and leaves its safe pot to seek food for the day. The night’s hefty downpour prevented it from going out, and now it’s hungry. The new world order has made it a lot easier to find food, which also means that the feeling of hunger is seldom reminded. But during the night, its stomach has been rumbling for something tasty, a bird or anything really. On soft paws, the fox hurries across the grass before stopping abruptly, to check that the coast is clear. But its home environment, a forest somewhere in Virginia, is deserted and free from danger. It had been a long time since this fox had experienced a hunting season, or heard the sound of quad bikes smelling of exhaust fumes pulling through its natural habitat. The fox hurries on, but just a few meters on it stops abruptly again, pricks up its ears when a rustle is heard. Silently, the fox hurries into a bush, at the same time as the grass is split some distance away by a pair of worn Keen hiking boots. The sun plays through the rustling foliage; a soft clatter, a result of the soft breeze that pulls through the forest.
After rain comes sunshine, it’s said. But the crooked male who stumbles between the tree trunks with trailing steps, has no idea of the beauty of mother nature that surrounds him. Nor any idea that he was once a thinking, living being. Many months have passed and time has not been gentle on him. A piece, large as a clenched fist, of his cheek is ripped out, but it doesn’t worry him. He totally lacks the ability to feel, to reason about whether he needs to see a doctor or put a bandaid on it. That time is over. The only instinct that remains and clings to the man’s poisoned, dead consciousness is hunger. An incurable, constant hunger for meat. That’s what drives the man forward through the forest, without, unlike the fox, being on his guard. It’s also this inattention that is reminded when a 5.45 mm bullet penetrates his skull, between the ear and the eye. The loud sound makes the fox give up his attempted excursion and rush back to his burrow.
Daryl tears his eyes from the walker who collapses on the ground like a shattered house of cards, and glances to his left.
“Home run.” He says as Mila lowers the rifle. “Ya’ wanna let me have a fair chance?” “It was you who said we should compete.” Mila threads the rifle’s shoulder strap over her arm and gives him a cheeky smile. “Gotta level up your game, Dixon. It’s not a contest if I let you win.”
“Hmpf...”
Mila starts walking and Daryl follows. He should have suspected that she was competitive. So far, she leads with eight hits against his three.
They’re heading west. A few days earlier, Glenn, Rick and Sasha returned to the Safe-Zone after a run, announcing that they had passed a mall they hadn’t seen before. As it got dark, all three agreed that it would be foolhardy to go in and investigate. Instead, Daryl suggested that he take on the task; leave early and check the place out.
“Take someone with you.” was the only thing Rick said before heading off to bed.
In front of Daryl, Mila’s trotting on towards their goal as fast as her feet manage. The untied boot laces bounces around her feet, whips up fallen leaves. They have accomplished about 2 miles which is halfway according to Rick’s description, made their way through woods and abandoned streets. Not taking the car was a conscious choice; Daryl wanted to do the walk. In nature he can breathe, he needs it and all its simplicity as if it were oxygen. He can not imagine spending the day with anyone else then her, on foot, on a mission to explore. Neither more nor less, yet everything.
“How far did they say it was?” Mila turns and looks at him; the long hair forms a fan around her face of the rapid movement.
“‘Bout halfway.” He replies.
“And we’re supposed to do what again?”
“Scout the place for supplies, then go back another day if it’s any good.” Daryl offers Mila his hand as she makes her way over a big branch, lying in their path. “Ya’ had anything in mind?”
“Carol asked for some new fancy kitchen knives.”
“Course she did.” Daryl grimaces, amused by Carol’s request, and climbs the branch.
“You go way back, you two, huh?” Mila squints at him.
Daryl squints back at her; Mila’s sapphire blue eyes are curious and gleams in the dancing sunlight that penetrates the dense foliage above. He shrugs a little.
“No more than anyone else.”
Mila lifts her eyebrows at him, she wants to hear more. Daryl sighs.
“We just-” He pauses, doesn’t really know what to say. “Get each other. Somehow.” How should he describe their friendship? Carol is one of his closest, most dearest friends. She’s warm, kind, fierce and she has a haunting ability to read his mind; knows what he thinks without him uttering a single word. Might be a mother’s instinct, or it might be something else, but Daryl values her ability immensely, not being very good with words himself. In the beginning, way back, he felt irritated, exposed and vulnerable in Carol’s presence. Could just as well be because he was a full blown ass to everything and everyone, but Carol made him feel human, made him feel like ‘someone’. She helped him find purpose and meaning in the group, never doubted him. Gosh, if it wasn’t for Carol, he thinks and looks at Mila, he would never be where he is; here, with Mila, being able to talk with her, not sounding like a buffoon or a total piece of shit. Crap, without Carol’s tremendous influence, Mila would probably have shunned him like the plague. He’d never in his life thought he’d soften up like this, but right now- He owes Carol everything for believing in him, not giving up. What if he’s been a good influence on her as well?
Out of nowhere, Mila says:
“You’ve gone through a lot together. Of course that must be more than friendship, that’s-” She searches for words. “-family. Strong bonds. Growing together, always having each others back. That’s valuable.”
“She’s great.” Daryl says and looks at Mila; wow, she really put words on his feelings.
“Invaluable, I would say.” Mila smiles. “Who could have dreamed of having a babysitter in the middle of a zombie apocalypse? One who’s also chef, baker, friend- a hell of a soldier.” She chuckles and grins at him. “And here I am, with you. Hell, I might switch to Carol, now that I think of it. She’s awesome.”
Daryl takes up a handful of leaves and throws at her. Mila laughs and leans in, pulls him into a kiss, lips with a lingering taste of this morning’s breakfast; coffee black as hell and the blantest looking bowl of oatmeal Daryl’s ever seen. Her lips sweep over his and Daryl, still holding onto the crossbow, puts his arm around her neck and replies the kiss, feeling her soft hair brush against his arm.
”I guess I get to work a little extra then.” He says with a smirk. “I won’t start baking though.”
“You sure?” She raises her eyebrows. “I'm pretty convincing.”
For you and the kid I’d probably do whatever the hell you wanted, if you asked me to, Daryl thinks. Damn, he would go through fire and water for ‘em.
“Let’s get this over with.” He puts a loop of her hair behind her ear. ”come on, Jersey.”
With his arms still resting around her neck, they continue to walk. Above them the treetops rattle pleasantly in the wind. The birds chirp and some distance away two squirrels perform their dance for each other around a thick tree trunk, wiggling their tails and noses simultaneously. But something’s disturbing the overall peaceful atmosphere. Maybe it’s intuition, but something's not quite right. Something in the distance makes Daryl stop abruptly. All of his muscles tenses and Daryl pricks up his ears, just like the fox he saw earlier. Male voices, more than two. Like a laser pointer, his gaze moves from left to right, frantically scouting for the slightest movement, the slightest deviation from the green vegetation around them. Suddenly he sees it. Ten meters in front of where they have haltered, the greenery, scattered with a few trees and bushes, opens into a paved road. On the other side of the road lies two buildings. It’s the dirty, black pickup parked in front of one of the buildings that has caught his attention. That and the armed men surrounding it.
“Down!”
“What?”
Before Mila has the chance to react, Daryl grabs her by the jacket and forces her to crouch. He raises a dirty index finger in front of his lips, as a sign that she should be dead quiet. Mila looks around, understands that he has seen something she has not seen yet. The sound of voices at a distance makes her look beyond the trees and bushes and she catches sight of the pickup. Carefully they make their way over to a pair of bushes that separates wilderness from domesticated. He pulls her down in the tall grass behind the foliage, out of sight, but the men in the parking lot don’t take notice of what’s happening in the vegetation at the other side of the road. Their attention lies fully on the boxes of ammunition they carry out of the run down building. They stack them on the covered truck bed, then return inside to grab some more, like a running band. Mila scouts through the foliage.
“Anyone you’ve seen before?” She asks in a low voice.
“Nah.” Daryl shakes his head while he follows a man with shoulder-length blond hair with his eyes. The blonde man disappears into the building and another comes out with yet another box. “Nah, they’re new.”
While five of the men fill the truck bed with boxes and cartons, the sixth man is standing on guard, armed with an automatic rifle, eyes searching the surrounding for any dangers, or other people.
“Maybe we should lie low for awhile.” Mila states.
Yeah, certainly feels foolish to make themselves known. Instead they lay low behind the bushes, watching the unknown group from a distance. Daryl looks at Mila’s profile; her forehead is furrowed and she seems to think, while biting on her lower lip.
“Whatcha thinkin’?”
“There’s-“ She counts. ”-six of them. There’s two of us. And I’m not good at math, but-” Once again Mila peers through the foliage. “And one doesn’t need that much ammunition unless there’s a threat.” She mumbles. “Or if you yourself is the threat.”
Daryl doesn’t answer. He thought exactly the same. There’s two possible scenarios for the reason behind this hoarding and he doesn’t like any of ‘em. His thoughts wander back in time, to the prison and the Governor, beheading Herschel and splitting the group, which caused him to flee headlong with Beth. An unpleasant sensation begins to take shape inside his stomach, a bundle of painful memories cutting his insides like barbed wire. There can’t be another Governor situation, not another battle. No more losses.
“Wonder where they’re staying.” Mila continues. “You think they have their own Safe-Zone somewhere?”
“More like Alamo.” Daryl replies, considering the heavy armor. “Ain’t lookin’ too good.”
“As long as we stay far away, we should be fine.”
Mila pats him on the knee and turns her eyes away from the gun shop. She makes herself comfortable, takes off her backpack, opens it and takes out two plastic bottles of water, followed by a half filled bottle of vodka. Daryl grins.
“Ya’ got a problem, Jersey.” He says and receives a bottle of water.
“I know.” She says. “If you happen to stumble across an AA meeting I promise you I’d attend, without hesitating.”
“Been like this for long?” He drinks and looks at Mila over the clear plastic bottle. “The drinkin’ I mean.”
“My family has a long tradition of desertion, foolish luck and malicious alcoholism. I’m not exactly surprised.” Mila fiddles with the cap of the vodka bottle. “Luckily I have a quite high tolerance. Besides, I can’t really stop either. It’s considered a disease I’ve heard.” She grins amused. “Back in Russia they’d die of laughter if they heard.” She pauses and squints at Daryl in the sun. “You’d like me to stop, right?”
“You do you.” Daryl responds. Ain’t his business to tell her what to do. Nor his right to.
“That’s new.” Mila says.
“Doesn’t seem to be that much of a problem, that’s all.”
“Good for me then. I didn’t plan to stop, not yet at least.”
“Take ya’ time.” Daryl says. “As long as ya’ safe. And the kid. Ya’ doin’ fine.”
“Might be hard to put your head around, but I was actually quite deep in the shit a couple of months ago. Though-” Mila pauses. “I’d lie if I said I didn’t feel guilty. This-” She nods at the bottle. “No kid should grow up around it. I mean, I did and that didn’t go well. I’d throw myself over a cliff if anything happened to Juri, but-” She sighs. “I have flaws, demons. But I’ve sworn to myself, and Juri, that he’s safe, no matter how wasted or fucked up I am.”
Daryl reaches out his arm, pulls her towards him.
“He wouldn’t be more safe with anyone else.” Daryl says and squeezes her a little. “Ya’ doin’ good, Jersey. Drunk or not.”
A bang, the sound of the door to the pickup’s flatbed closing, makes them both jump in the grass. They turn their heads and look through the foliage, seeing the men step into the car and onto the loaded flatbed.
“Let’s go.” They hear one of them holler.
The engine starts and they drive out of the deserted parking lot in front of the gun shop, turn left and disappear.
“Coast is clear.” Mila declares. “Let’s get going.”

SPN S1 Review
I honestly have no idea if this post is about to be hella long or moderate, but I feel like a lot of my feelings got aired out when I was reviewing each individual episode, so I’m just gonna dump the rest of my thoughts that I’ve jotted down while watching this season here. This is basically gonna be me saying, “Wow, this was interesting,” or, “This is similar to/different from later seasons because…” These are all coming from notes on my computer, so they’re half-baked. Nothing too fancy or analytical, but I’ll be doing one of these for every season.
Random thoughts:
I don’t like the monster-of-the-week, episodic format that much, and a lot of those episodes this season felt average in quality for me. However, when you don’t have much else to focus on besides an arbitrary goal of the boys finding John to kill something they know nothing about, it isn’t so bad. Filler episodes suck more later because they’re often completely disconnected from the main story, which isn’t the case for most filler episodes in this season. Plus, the main stories later have more involved goals for the season than this one did, which made the filler episodes later more annoying. For example, if Sam and Dean want to hunt a Tulpa at a haunted house because John is off doing something somewhere, that’s fine. Kill the time. But if Sam and Dean really need to figure out a way to kill God, like, now before Chuck decimates every fleck of existence he’s ever created, maybe don’t waste my time with an episode about a wood nymph, you know? If the stakes are higher, then the quality episodes shouldn’t appear with less frequency. All I’m saying.
The tone, acting, and writing of these characters is so different. Like, when you know a show intimately, these kinds of differences between one season and the next are natural to you. It’s not like I wasn’t aware that the boys looking for their father feels a lot fucking different than the boys having a kid, but when you actually let yourself be aware of how much the show has changed, it’s kind of crazy. Like, if I just think about it offhand, I’m like, “Yeah, this is Supernatural.” But if I break the fourth wall a bit in my mind, it’s like, “Damn, I really did watch these characters and their actors mature for fifteen years, didn’t I?” Crazy.
There are so many episodes that end with the Impala driving down the road. Like, an aerial shot of it. And if the very last scene isn’t that, then it’s probably the scene right before the last scene. Until the last few episodes, that is.
I don’t know why I’ve written this down, but it’s easier to remember episode titles in season one because you can match it to the creature without having to remember the plot. Like, “Oh, the Wendigo episode.” I’ve also said in this same note that the folklore plots died out later on in the series, which is true.
A quote from my notes: “The show really does feel better with Cas, huh?” Look, I’m not gonna say that the S1 finale didn’t slap, because it did. However, I will say that Cas can brighten any episode up, so, had he been in the series from the beginning, the season finale may not have been the only S1 episode to slap. Not that there weren’t other episodes that were good, but you know. Also, this isn’t to say that Cas should’ve been around the whole time because him coming into Dean’s life when he did was exactly perfect.
They do this later, too, but a handful of episodes in the early seasons will be like, “Here’s a girl. Now, one of you Winchesters, go bond with her this instant.” And it’s weird? You don’t need to bring a girl in just to make googly eyes at one of the boys? You could just give her the story she was supposed to have but minus all the flirting?
So, Sam is meant to be the central character for the first five seasons, right? Yes, Dean is supposed to be his equal; yes, he went to Hell and had that whole storyline; yes, he’s Michael’s vessel, but it was always really about Sam, you know? Sam was the one who had the connection to the biggest, baddest thing imaginable (at the time), that being Lucifer. Sam was the one chosen for Lucifer. Sam was the one with the psychic abilities and the one to drink demon blood and the reason Dean sold his soul. Dean is obviously a main character with his own story, but Sam was meant to be the special one, yeah? But even so, Dean is such a beautifully complex character because he wasn’t special. You can see that, even in S1—that his specialness came from his lack of central focus. It’s almost like the plot was saying, “Sam,” and Dean went, “I’m gonna cause problems anyway,” and that’s awesome. I don’t know if that makes sense, but I just feel like Dean is the most interesting character in the entire series, and he wasn’t even the one S1 picked out as special.
Sam’s psychic abilities seemed a lot cooler when you didn’t know as much about them. Like, yes, Sam having those abilities for the purpose of housing Lucifer is cool and all, but it felt so much more mystical when it just seemed like something Sam could do for some reason. Not that that would’ve been a better payoff than what we get—it’d be stupid for the story to say, “I know a demon chose you to be the vessel of Lucifer himself, but the psychic thing you can do? Just a coincidence”—but it’s some food for thought.
John is barely fucking there even though his existence permeates the entire fucking season. I thought he was so much more present than he was in this series. They treated him like they treated Cas. “We said his name a few times, that’s good right?” No. No, it isn’t.
I hate the pattern the episodes have in S1. It goes: location name, bad thing happens in said location, Sam and Dean talk about said thing, they go to said location, they research and maybe flirt with some random girl, they fight, they drive away in the Impala. Like, nearly every episode is like that.
Without demons in the mix that often, the tone of S1 is really different when you compare it to every other season.
Dean is a lot more emotionally vulnerable in this season. I mean, he’s not sitting down with Sam to talk about his feelings all the time, but his emotions are definitely closer to the surface. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that he hasn’t had to emotionally shut down to protect Sam yet. Obviously, he represses things because of the way he was raised, and because he had to raise Sam; however, he still had John to lean on at this point. So, he hadn’t developed that habit of hiding his feelings and leaning on no one but himself yet as he did when he lost John. Because of that, he was able to be scared and tell Sam that he was afraid of losing his family and stuff like that. He becomes a way darker character in after John dies, and he more or less only leans fully on one other person for the rest of the series, albeit in a different way.
John saying in 1x21 that he wants Dean to have a home after Azazel is killed is the saddest thing I’ve ever heard. For one, because John is aware that he deprived Dean of a real home, and by extension, is aware that Dean is damaged because of that. But also, it’s sad because Dean has lived 26 years of his life up until now without ever having a home he felt safe and loved in.
Dean running from a potential fight with Azazel in 1x22 is super interesting because he’s fighting to be a part of his family rather than simply fighting for them to be saved. Dean doesn’t want to die, isn’t willing to die. That’s something that definitely changes later. Big time.
Filler episode rate:
By my count, which admittedly might be wrong, there were 7 episodes that were primarily main story episodes this season and 15 monster-of-the-week/filler episodes.
Now, in the early seasons, it isn’t as easy to separate the filler from the main story because almost every episode will deal with character conflict that’s tied to what’s going on with the main story. However, I called it a filler if the primary plot was just a random hunt. For example, I called “Scarecrow” a filler because, even though Meg was introduced after Sam and Dean have a big fight, the main plot is hunting a god.
My bottom 5 episodes in order:
These next two sections are based on my ratings of these episodes from my reviews of every episode. I’ve just ordered them, with one being my least favorite/favorite episode this season.
5.) 1x07: Hook Man
4.) 1x03: Dead in the Water
3.) 1x02: Wendigo
2.) 1x13: Route 666
1.) 1x08: Bugs
My top 5 episodes in order:
5.) 1x14: Nightmare
4.) 1x06: Skin
3.) 1x15: The Benders
2.) 1x21: Salvation
1.) 1x22: Devil’s Trap
My top episodes for Sam:
This section and the next will just be me bringing up some good points of development for Sam and Dean throughout this season. I mean, of course they develop almost all the time, but these episodes are some of the best/most interesting. At least, in my opinion. If you want to read more about my reasons, check out my reviews. Just search for “spn s1 reviews” on my blog.
1x05: Bloody Mary - Sam’s psychic abilities got alluded to for the first time during this episode, but it also told us how much Sam blamed himself for Jessica’s death.
1x10: Asylum - Sam’s resentment for Dean is voiced, and though he’s under the influence of a ghost while he talks about Dean, some of it is supported by development in other episodes this season.
1x14: Nightmare - Sam bonds with Max over their shared abilities and pasts. We also get to see that Sam initially related his own trauma when growing up to Max’s, even though he acknowledged that Max had it worse at the end. It’s an interesting point of development that Sam saw his upbringing that way.
1x19: Provenance - Through Sarah being a part of this episode, Sam reveals that he sees himself as dangerous because the abilities he has has put the people he loves in danger in the past.
1x21: Salvation - Sam reveals that he’s willing to die, and by extension, risk his family to get the job of killing Azazel done.
1x22: Devil’s Trap - Sam has to choose between losing his family through getting his revenge or losing his chance at revenge to save his family.
My top episodes for Dean:
1x06: Skin - Dean’s abandonment issues are touched on for the first time.
1x09: Home - Dean shows fear when faced with returning home and dealing with the trauma of what he went through the night Mary died.
1x12: Faith - This is the first episode that we see a serious internal conflict in Dean about the worth of his life, which is interesting, because we can see in later episodes that he doesn’t want to die. However, his attitude in this episode seems to suggest that he doesn’t see his life as valuable.
1x18: Something Wicked - Honestly, this isn’t my favorite episode in the world, but it’s the first flashback episode of the series; in it, you’ll see the reason behind Dean’s feelings of responsibility regarding Sam.
1x21: Salvation - Dean insists that nobody will die to kill Azazel, showing that he wants to be a part of his family rather than just saving them.
1x22: Devil’s Trap - Dean shows a darker side of himself in an attempt to get John back, and his fears of being unneeded by his family are revealed as well as his fears of losing his family.
Well, that’s all I’ve got for this season’s review. I’ll rate this season in my series review that I’ll write once all this is over, but my impressions right now are that the first season of Supernatural was all right. It didn’t necessarily walk in a straight line, but it still felt like there was a definite destination. And, on top of that, the season ended in one of the most banger ways an SPN season has ever ended. The monster-of-the-week stuff has made most of the episodes this season ones I would probably not revisit, but S1 is definitely still special.
We’ll see if this changes later, but for now, my rating (and average, based on my ratings in my reviews) for S1 is ★★★☆☆.

“I absolutely need to see / read something where Tom and Maddie try and teach Sonic to swim. If anyone does this I’ll love you forever.”
@sakuraconsoles ~Ask and you shall receive~
@rockmilkshake ~ I was halfway through writing this when you posted your artwork, so some of this will based off the art you just posted~
I was literally up until midnight writing this. I am very tired but it was worth it.
Sonic kicked his legs back and forth excitedly as he sat in the back seat of Tom’s new Tacoma, staring out the window watching the power lines rush by.
Tom was in the drivers seat, his elbow out the window as he kept his eyes on the road while Maddie was going through her phone, her hair in 2 long french braids, humming along to the song playing on the radio.
Since it was getting near the end of the spring season, Tom and Maddie have been booked with working more hours while he’s been plagued with to what he considers, an illegal amount of homework so close to spring break.
Maddie had told him the day before that they were all going to a new place for the day, a place he hasn’t been to yet.
Ever since then, he was just going to town with questioning the couple on their new destination.
‘This is the first time in awhile we’ve gone anywhere together on a Saturday, must be a real awesome place if i never seen it.’ He thought as he started thinking of where they were going.
"Are we going to the park?"
"No"
"Oh, hooow about the skating ring?"
"Nope”
“Umm...Oh! Are you taking us to the baseball field?” He sat up in his seat, trying to see Tom’s face as he drove.
Tom made a buzzing noise as he kept his eyes on the road.
Sonic huffed as he plopped back against the seat. He looked up and titled his head to the side.“.....are you taking us to Olive Garden again?” He said in a deadpan voice.
Maddie stifled a laugh while Tom gasps, adjusting his rear view mirror to look at the pouting hedgehog. “Hey what’s with that tone? I thought you liked Olive Garden?”
“I mean I do! But like you always get that never ending pasta bowl. They have other foods to eat you know.” He shrugged his shoulders as looked down at his sneakers.
“But that’s the thing about the never ending pasta bowl.” He glanced back at Sonic, taking his eyes off the road for a second.
“It never ends.” He turned back around, laughing to himself.
Sonic rolled his eyes at the poor joke. “Pfft well for you yeah, only because you can never finish the whole thing in one sitting.”
“Hey! It’s not my fault they made the food Im-pasta-ble to eat.”
Maddie tightened her mouth in a straight line, shaking her head and glancing out the window while Sonic gave a unintended snicker behind his glove.
Tom’s head snapped up. “Was that a laugh I just heard?”
“No, it wasn’t.” He replied, muffled due to his hand covering his mouth.
“Then why are you smiling behind your glove?”
Dropping his hand quickly, he crossed his arms and shrugged his shoulders. “I wasn’t smiling, i was making sure you didn’t hear that pity laugh.”
Tom held up a finger up. “Ah! so you admit it was a laugh then?”
“I....uggh ok fine it was.” He groaned, hitting his head against the seat.
Tom gave a small “yes” as he winked at Maddie.
Maddie smiled back at him and gave a small laugh. “You guys are so adorable.”
=======
Getting antsy, Sonic’s leg began bouncing out of impatience as they were getting near their destination.
“We’ve been in this car for so long! Are we there yet?”
Tom let out a chuckle. “It’s only been 15 minutes bud.”
“It feels like it’s been 15 hours! We’ve been driving for so loooonnng.” He laid down dramatically on his side, closing his eyes.
Maddie turned around, clutching his hand and shaking it to get his attention. “Well have you guessed where we’re going yet?”
He sat back up. “No, i absolutely have no idea where we’re going.”
“Well, you can stop guessing now cause we are now here.” Tom pulled into a parking space.
Due to his small stature, Sonic unbuckled and stood up on the seat to look outside.
What he saw was people, mostly kids walking towards a small brown building.
Only they were carrying fairly large bags, some were carrying long, colorful tubes, beach towels and chairs.
‘Wait, are we at the-?’
“Welcome to the Green Hills community pool!” Tom addressed with flair as he got out of the car, earning odd looks from some passing teens.
Sonic jumped down from his seat to the ground, shutting the door behind him. Tom went to the trunk to get their things while Maddie answered a call on her cellphone, walking away so he couldn’t overhear her conversation.
He glanced around at the groups heading inside, most were paying him no mind while only a few, mostly toddlers, would stare at him in fascination while they walked with their parents.
‘Quite a lot of people are here today, it’s not even that hot out today.’
Zipping over to the wire fence, he’s eyes widened at the sight before him.
“Oh sweet chimichanga.”
The area of place was a pretty big, whether that was due to his size or not was up to him,
The pool had about 2 slides around the length of the pool, a short, open blue slide and a tall, teal slide that formed a spiral to the water and a long diving board, which he saw a few people jumping and doing flips off it.
He looked over to where the lawn chairs were set up, there were more people sitting in the grass on towels rather than the chairs leaving a lot of open spaces, either reading, sunbathing, a few couples even making out underneath the trees.
“Ew, how do they even breath when they do that?”
He zipped back to truck where Tom was shutting the trunk, unloading the last of the bags.
“Ok that’s everything, here you can carry this one, it’s light enough for you.” He passes Sonic a small bag, which was filled with mostly towels and bagged lunches.
Maddie walked back over to them, face beaming as she put her phone in her purse.
“We all set?”
Tom nodded as he passed a bag to Maddie. “Yep, all ready to swim in cold, dirty water with random strangers.”
“Tom...”
“What? We basically are.”
“I know but I don’t want to think about that while I’m swimming in said water.”
“Just think of it like your taking a cold bath.....but using chlorine and with random people who are almost naked.”
“Oh my god Tom, please just stop.”
The hedgehog stifled his laughs as he walked behind them, before pausing with a look of confusion and slight disgust morphed on his face.
‘Wait, is it really like that?’
=======
“Ok close your eyes.”
Sonic obeyed as Maddie smeared some sunscreen on his face and muzzle, scrunching his face at the cold feeling and odd smell.
Sitting cross legged on the lawn chair, he started to rub at his face. “Ick, why do I have to wear sunscreen? I have fur all over my body.”
Maddie grabbed his hand. “Yeah but parts of your face doesn’t, so it could be more eligible to be sunburnt than the rest of your body.” She helped him spread the lotion around his eyes and face.
“Ugh does it have to smell so bad?”
“Better safe than sorry sweetie.” She shrugged as she got up, rubbing his head as she sat behind him.
He sighed as he laid back against her shoulder, watching his head quills from poking her.
“Who are you texting on your phone?”
“My boyfriend, Arnold.”
He shot up, shocked. “Your what?!?”
Laughing, she shook her head and put her hand on his shoulder. “No I was just joking, I’m just texting a friend.”
He grabbed his chest, sighing in relief. “Oh man, at first I thought you were actually taking Rachel’s advice on leaving Tom.”
“Hmmm I wouldn’t call it advice, it’s more like a order.”
“Heh pretty much yeah.”
The two sat in silence for a moment before the sound of Tom grunting and the scraping of a chair caught their attention.
He continued to pull the heavy lawn chair over, before simply picking it up and setting it down next to them.
He sat down, wiping his “Whew! It’s starting to get more busy in here, I had to almost fight someone to get this chair.”
Maddie made a face as she put her arm around Sonic, who was still leaning against her. “Who was fighting you for the chair?”
“Mrs. Tailor.”
Sonic let out a gasp. “You tried to fight Flower Power lady?”
“Yeah and she did not take well.” He sheepishly said as he motioned his eyes over to where she was.
She was glaring straight at him at the pool entrance, scowling and making a very rude hand gesture at him.
“I have a feeling we’re not going to get those petunias half priced anymore Maddie.”
She sighed. “Oh great.”
Sonic squinted at Mrs. Tailor. “What’s that thing she’s doing with her hand mean?”
“It’s a bad thing and don’t let me ever catch and hear you doing that.” Tom replied sternly, pointing a finger at him.
Sonic held up his hands. “Ok, ok I won’t.”
“Good.”
Maddie’s phone chimed, she got up as she checked it.
“I got to take this, don’t upset anyone else’s while I’m gone!” She jogged towards the entrance, speaking to whoever was on the other line.
Tom leaned over towards Sonic, who was looking through the lunch bag. “You noticed that she’s been in the phone a lot today?”
“Yeah, I think she’s talking to Rachel or something.” He said nonchalantly as he put the bag down and stretched his arms.
“Yeah?”
“Either that or it’s her boyfriend Arnold.”
“Uh hu- wait Arnold?”
“Yeah Arnold Schwarzenegger, she really has her eyes on him.”
“.....Sonic that’s not funny.”
“I know, I thought she would be into to Tom Cruise.”
“Why on earth would she be into Tom Cruise?”
“Have you SEEN the way that guy runs? Now that’s a man.”
Tom scoffed, getting annoyed. “Wha- compared to who?”
Sonic looked Tom up and down. “Compared to you I guess.”
“You little-.”
“I thought I told you guys not to upset anyone?” Maddie came over to them, hands on her hips.
Sonic pointed a finger at Tom. “He thinks that you don’t love him anymore.”
Tom swatted Sonic's finger away. “No, no that’s not what I meant.”
Maddie raised her eyebrow, amused.
“Maddie, who would you prefer, me or Tom Cruise?.”
“Tom Cruise.” She replied with no hesitation.
Sonic brust into laughter, nearly falling off the chair. Tom’s mouth gaped open, putting his hand on his chest dramatically. “Maddie...why?”
“That chizzled look he has on his face everytime he smiles at people, it’s amazing.”
“What about when I would smile?”
“That’s your saving grace, it’s actually better than his.”
“Oh what a relief.”
“Ew, if you two are down flirting, can we please go in th-.”
“Hey Sonic!”
Sonic stopped as he heard his name being called, the voice sounding very familiar.
He looked up at Maddie, who was glancing at him smiling. “Maddie am I losing it or did that sound like-.”
“Sonic! Over here!”
He turned to where the voice came from and saw someone waving to them, a young girl who has wearing her hair in small, beaded braids running towards them through the grass.
“Jojo!?”
He got off the chair and zoomed over to her, stopping right in front of her and sliding right into a hug.
Jojo giggles as she put down her bag and hugs him back tightly, lifting him slightly off the ground.
She released him as she grabbed her bag off the ground and walked next to him.
“Oh man I didn’t know you were coming to visit!”
“Yeah, mom and aunt Maddie made sure I couldn’t tell you anything.”
“What? Geez everyone’s just keeping stuff from me, so your mom is here too?”
“Yeah, she’s in the car making sure that her makeup looks good.”
“....Why is she wearing makeup when she’s going swimming?”
“She tells me that the ‘most worthy’ guys always come to the pool to check out the women.”
He stopped and looked up at her with disgust. “What?”
“I don’t know either.” She glanced back, shrugging her shoulders. Sonic looked back and saw her through the car window, applying said lipstick.
“I don’t understand our family.”
“Neither do I, but I’m glad that you’re here though, it’s nice to have a kid around my age in this family, who’s also not a crazy adult.” She smiled as she grabbed his hand.
He grinned, giving her hand a squeeze. “Heh Yeah, me too Jo.”
=======
“Ok I’m pretty sure this jacket is trying to suffocate me.” Sonic tried to adjust his mini life jacket, only to end up nearly choking himself.
“Ok, here let me help.” Tom adjusts his jacket, putting pressure off his back quills. “And here are your floaties.”
“Is this really necessary?” He winced as Tom shoves the floaties on his arms. “They’re really tight.”
“Well yeah dude, since you never swam before you need to train yourself to swim with it so you can eventually swim without them.”
“Why can’t I just that donut tube thingy like Jojo's?” He motions over to her, who was using said tube spin fast and around in a circle.
“Because of your extravagant spikey hairstyle, it would poke holes all over it beyond return.”
“Right I see your point there."
Maddie was over near the chairs, putting away her clothes while talking to Rachel, who once in a while would shoot a nasty look at Tom.
Clapping his hands together, Tom took a running stance. "Alright people stand back, I'm about to make a major tidal wave!"
Tom jumped and made a cannonball into the water, Jojo letting out a scream as she covered her head from the incoming splash. Tom broke the surface, wiping his hair and water from his face.
"Whoo! Yeah! How about that Maddie? Can Tom Cruise do that?"
Maddie looked over at Tom as she led Sonic towards the edge of the pool. "Yes Tom, he can do a cannonball just like that."
"Dang it, can you believe this Jojo?"
"Uncle Tommy, even I can do a cannonball like that."
"Jojo! You're supposed to be on my side!" He responded with splashing water at her, who retaliated by grabbing a nearby pool noodle and started whacking him in the head with it.
"Get him Jojo! Let him have it! Show him no mercy!" Rachel applauded her daughter from her seat, pulling out her phone to record it.
"Oh come Rach, I know we have a rivalry but using your own daughter to- Ow! Wha- where'd you get two of them!?"
Meanwhile, Maddie was into the water until it went up to her waist, turning around she held out her hand to Sonic, who was now barefoot and placed his shoes near the lawn chair. "Ok it's going to be pretty cold at first so it's best if you just come in quickly."
"Maddie, You know that's my specialty." He said smugly as he got into a running stance.
Maddie's face drops. "Wait Sonic that's not what i-." Her voice fell to deaf ears as he jumped over her and dove into the cold water.
He burst through the water, coughing and screaming from the shock of the cold. "OH MY GOD! IT'S FREEZING! MAD- MADDIE HELP!"
Quickly rushing over to him, she lifts him up and smacks her hand against his back, helping him get rid of the water he inhaled.
Panting and coughing, he wipes the water from his stinging eyes. "Oh man."
"I tried to warn you but.."
"Yeah...that wa-, that was my bad."
Hearing Sonic's screams, Tom and Jojo swam over towards them.
Tom looks at Sonic, still rubbing his eyes. "What happened?"
"He dove in too soon and got the penalty for it." She rubbed his back as he shook his head to get the water out of his ears.
Jojo swims closer to him. "I did the same thing too when I was learning how to swim."
"Really?" His voice shaking slightly due to his shivering.
"Yeah, but the one thing I always do when I swim is try to keep my shoulders under the water."
Maddie lowered him back into the water, still having a hold on him. "I don't think I can keep them under the water due to this jacket."
"Oh you just splash some water on it if you can't." She demonstrates by pouring water on her shoulders.
Sonic copies her, shivering slightly.
Tom takes Sonic's hand and brings him further out, he feels the hedgehog grip his hand tighter.
"You're good buddy, I've got you."
"Hmm-mmm."
Getting to a empty space, Tom picked him up in his arms bridal style, earning a surprised yelp from him.
"Ok, so we're just gonna try floating first so we don't have to keep carrying you the whole time."
"Ok..."
"Ok here we go." He slowly lowered him into the water, his hands underneath his back and legs.
"Oooh god it's still freezing." He shivered with a face of discomfort.
"Yeah I know, this is why we're practicing this first."
He let him float for a few seconds before removing his hands entirely, the teen didn't notice as he kept looking up at the sky.
"How you feeling?"
"Um good, I can barely hear your voice due to the water in my ears." He says a little louder than he realizes.
"Good, that's good." He helped Sonic float upright, motioning Jojo over to them.
"So for this next part, I'm gonna use Jojo as an example. Jojo, could you show Sonic how you swim without the tube?"
"Sure!" She placed the tube on the cement and started to swim around the two.
"Now see how she's using her arms with her legs to make her move while also staying afloat?"
"Yeah."
"You have to find a balance with that flow so you can swim better, you might swim like Jo or completely different, it takes practice."
"Whatever you say donut lord." He faked saluted him.
Tom placed him forward in the water, both hands underneath his stomach as he practiced moving his arms and legs slowly.
"You don't have to move them that slowly, you can move them faster."
"Ok then." He replies with a sly grin. He then moves his limbs like a motorboat, splashing Tom's face in the process.
"Sonic! I didn't mean that fast!"
He slowed them down, looking back at him. "Oh you weren't being specific."
"I'm pretty sure that was very specific." He shook the water from his face.
Tom saw Maddie get back in the pool, giving him an idea.
"Let's try something with motivation, see if you can get to Maddie over by the steps."
Sonic looks to where Maddie was standing, who was letting her shoulders soak in the water.
"She's pretty far from us, I can barely move from this spot as it is."
"You gotta remember to cup your hands when you wade through the water and keep kicking your legs so you can keep up the momentum."
The teen looked up at him, uncertainty coming onto his face.
"Hey compared to what you've fought through before you came to us, this is going to be a synch for you."
"I know but..." His voice gets quiet as he avoids Tom's glance.
"Sonic?" He looks at Jojo.
She grabs his shoulder firmly. "I believe in you."
"Really?"
"Definitely." She grinned holding her fist out.
Smiling, Sonic bumped her fist with his and took a deep breath, looking ahead towards Maddie. "Alright, let's do this."
Cupping his hands, he paddled and kicked his legs towards Maddie.
Maddie, noticing him swimming at her went to move closer to him.
"No! Don't move! I want to see if I can swim to you!" He panted as he kept up his pace.
Nodding, she waded in place as Sonic paddled.
'Geez this would be easier if i paddled even faster.'
Giving the idea a try he moved his arms and legs faster, gaining some momentum but not for long.
" *pant* Why *pant* isn't this *pant* working?"
Maddie yelled from across the pool. "You gotta move slowly since you weigh less in the water, the slower you go, the farther you get!"
"What? That makes no sense!"
"That's how science is sometimes."
"Well science needs to chill out." He murmured to himself.
He was more than halfway there when he was starting to feel his arms tire out. Tom and Jojo cheered him on from other end.
"Come on Sonic! you're almost there!" "Go Sonic go!"
Now being a foot away from him, Maddie held out her arms towards him. "C'mon sweetie you're almost there!"
With determination, he kicked his legs and moved his arms with one final push right into her arms.
Maddie snatched him up and spun him around in a hug. "Alright! Look at you! You swam so far!"
Still panting, he glanced back to where Tom and Jojo were, currently cheering at his successful attempt.
"Oh...yeah.....that's....great." he panted as his head unconsciously fell on Maddie's shoulder.
Tom made his way over to them. "Oh man, that took alot out of him huh?"
"Hmm yeah, but he made it though didn't you?" She praised him, bouncing him in her arms.
"Yeah...but that was alot....even for me." He weakly raised his arm, only let it fall to his side. "It feels like I ran for a year straight."
"Yeah swimming will do that to you, especially if you're not used to it." He ruffled Sonic's head before calling to Jojo.
"Time for a break Jo! It's lunchtime!"
"Ok!" Jojo got out and went over to get her towel, which was right near her mother who was trying to flirt with an uninterested lifeguard.
"I better save that guy from Rachel." Tom grunted as he got out and walked over towards the girls.
Maddie made her way towards the steps leading out the pool, still carrying Sonic in her arms.
She shook him slightly. "Hey try to stay awake for a little longer, I packed your favorite for lunch." She spoke softly.
Sonic lifted his head slowly. "Hot dogs?"
"With some homemade jalapeno sauce, probably can't get that from Mrs. Tailor anymore either."
"Maddie...you are an angel sent from above." He stretched his arms.
"Aw thank you, make sure you tell Tom that you think that, I could get so much compliments from him for at least a month."
"Haha, alright you got a deal."

Hello again, in case you didn't get my ask, which scene or episode would you say the main cast of Amphibia (Brenda (Anne), Justin (Sprig), Amanda (Polly), and Bill (Hop Pop)) does their best performances as their characters?
Alrighty, let’s get this show on the road.
Brenda Song’s best performance would have to be when Anne was describing little details about her mother in Hopping Mall. There’s no doubt in my mind that she was pulling stuff from her own experiences in life associated with Brenda’s own mother. Loved that delivery on the particular line of, “ You know the funny thing is...Right now...I’d give anything just to hear her singing.”. Easily my favorite performance from Brenda’s acting as Anne, where she embodied this characterization that is seriously important for viewers to buy into her acting. When Anne was breaking into tears I didn’t picture someone behind the mic, but felt like I was seeing an actual person pouring their heart out. Now that right there is how you know that’s great acting from an actor or actress. Not to say her acting in the amazing Season 1 finale, Reunion, wasn’t good either, as Brenda did a great job with her dramatic acting chops there, too. It’s just that Hopping Mall struck a chord with me, given how well Brenda poured herself into embodying those feelings one has of their connection to a parental figure.
With Sprig’s VA, Justin, I’d say his top notch performance is either the Grubhog Day, Fiddle Me This, or, again, Hopping Mall, as each of these stories showcases more underlying drama that Sprig’s VA had to emulate besides his usual shtick of being the hyperactive comic relief. Really liked his performance of building up frustration against Hop Pop’s hard lined training regiments in Fiddle Me This, where Sprig finally has an outburst at him for pushing him so much into a contest that he just wanted to have fun in. Grubhog Day showed more of his insecurities of trying to please Hop Pop, despite not wanting to take responsibility on the whole Grubhog tradition Wartwood does annually and have fun at the fair. Sprig has usually been seen by Hop Pop as the irresponsible trouble maker, so this was another great opportunity to explore that idea yet again of how much this weighs on the poor kid’s mind of not feeling good enough for him as a son, which Justin did a well in acting out those emotions and especially at the end when he says, “ I knew it was important to you, so I played along. I just wanted to make you proud.”. Hopping Mall is more or less along the same lines as before, except very profound, with how it explores Sprig’s emotional tip toeing around something he’s insecure about, which was whether or not it’s silly to miss his own mother, even though she passed away when he & Polly were very young. Justin delivered Sprig’s lines at the end with such conflicting emotions, yet deep longing, toward wanting a mother.
Amanda’s best acting as Polly is one I’m gonna have to chalk up to Truck Stop Polly. Season 2 was all about upping the stakes a bit more emotionally for exploring each character’s struggle in Amphibia’s wilderness outside of Wartwood, where showing Polly’s conflict of trying to find comfort provided for some very nice acting material from Amanda. That delivery on, “I really am just trouble aren’t I? You were right. Maybe you should’ve left me back in Wartwood...”, really made me feel for Polly because she’s not used to this kind of traveling and being the youngest certainly doesn’t help in that regard, either. Hope to see more dramatic material with Polly in the future because Amanda can do a damn good job with pulling off dramatic stuff when needed, of course. As for Hop Pop, that’s tough to nail down because Bill Farmer is such a wonderfully talented VA it’s hard for me to decide on what his best performance was, overall. I’m leaning towards either Hop Popular or Fiddle Me This, which showcased good material for Bill Farmer to further bring the character to life with his terrific acting chops. We got to see his insecurities at trying to make a living as an upstanding figure in the election episode, where he had to put the needs of others above his own desires for wanting back his food stand. Fiddle Me This did an excellent job showing his terrifying concerns as trying to be a role model parent, by doing everything he can to provide for his kids, since he’s the only adult Polly & Sprig got in their lives they can learn from in general. Bill Farmer’s remorseful delivery on, “I just wanted to give you a better life, than the one I can give you now...”, to Sprig goes to reinforce his acting skills being so experienced, as seen with what he accomplished in A Goofy Movie, of hitting that right note of gushing out parental affection, as if it were his own son Bill was talking to. Long story short, the voice cast for Amphibia are simply well rounded and awesome.
