im seeing a lot of discourse about miguel and how he treats miles and im not gonna write him off cause he was outta pocket but like i consider peter b to way worse than him in that regard

cause for all the shit miguel puts miles through, its (arguably) impersonal. miguel presents himself as an obstacle for miles to overcome from the very beginning. peter b on the other hand, just failed so dramatically to come through when miles needed him and i cant respect that at all

like maybe he trusts miguel and believes what they're doing is necessary for the safety of the universe but he makes the barest minimum attempt to protect miles in any capacity. like miles cannot consider him an ally until its too late and thats so fucked up cause miles looks up to him and respects and loves him so much and what does he do. he lets miguel choke slam miles into a train

and like i know its lampshaded that hes a bad mentor but like shouldnt that weigh on him. hes so nonchalant about it. shouldnt the fact that this kid (honestly these kids plural, counting gwen) trusted him to look out for them and he failed make him question himself

like yeah miguel was too grown to be doing all that but its so much more frustrating watching peter b just fail to be in miles corner.

Things I screamed about in ATSV (spoilers)

-Got to rewatch the film so I’m just going to add the colours changing to warmer tones when Gwen hugs her father. Not even ten minutes in and I was already crying.

-Realised that we missed the Gwen-Vulture fight BUT got to see Jessica Drew enter the scene like a bad ass in her bad ass bike and hearing the audience collectively say ‘me too’ when Gwen asked if Jessica could adopt her. 

-Screaming OSCAR ISAAC when Miguel spoke

-Lyla. Just Lyla.

- ‘Do you say anything other than no?’ ‘No-YES!’ more of miguel and jessica pls

-The Spot’s introduction. I didn’t see any promotional stuff, teasers or even trailers before watching this film so I had no idea who or what the The Spot was which was great because he really went from villain of the week to villain of the movie. And they clearly had a great time choreographing the fight scenes with him

-Miles’ heating up the beef patty while the spot and the convenience store man argue

-Miles patting the spot’s with a ‘good cow’ text

-Gwen and Miles both having to deepen their voices to avoid being recognised by their respective cop dads

-Miles saying that he can get two cakes when the counsellor says you can’t have your cake and eat it too and then bringing two cakes for his father’s party and neither of them saying what he wanted to convey. 

-Rio and Jeff scolding an annoyed miles but instantly smiling when a relative hugs them what an universal experience 

-Gwen teasing Miles for drawing her in his notebook almost obsessively but also breaking the biggest rule to spend time with him knowing the consequences. 

-As they went to talk, my friend leaned over and said ‘yeah I bet they will talk’ and when they only talked he groaned very loudly at which point I had to remind him Miles was only 15 

-Watching Jeff talk to Spiderman about his son not knowing his son is spiderman

-The DJ increasing the volume when Miles’ parents started scolding him in the middle of the party (the real mvp of the movie actually) 

-JK Simmons cameo that no one seems to be talking about??? Embarrassingly enough I had to literally scream into my friend’s ear for most of the people to realise it was indeed JK Simmons

-Just the entire Mumbattan scene. It was so exciting to see my city be represented like that, still a bit cliched in my opinion but not like Slumdog so obviously they have updated their views. Everything from the traffic gag to Pav’s rant about chai tea had the theatre howling. Also the detail of the thought boxes (?) and sounds being written in Hindi 

-Screaming DANIEL KALUUYA

-My friend and I are huge fans of the UK punk scene (her for the ideologies and myself for the music and fashion) so Hobie was a dream come true. He was already super cool with his guitar and mohawk costume but when he revealed his face it was just so amazing

-Gayatri is every indian’s dream girl with her modern shirt-flannel and jeans combo mixed with bangles and piercings I really wish we get to see more of her in the next movie. Anyway there was a lot of wolf-whistling and hooting for her and Pav

-Also Pavitr literally means pure I don’t know if they did that on purpose or not but I love it

-His pet name being Pav cured my soul

-’This is the most emotional I have seen him’ and Captain Singh has no emotions at all

-I want to see how they came up with so many spider designs because each was so unique and immediately endearing. My friend who is also a big dinosaur fan screamed DINOSAUR 

-Kind of obsessed with how detailed Ben Reilly’s arms are they did not need to go that hard with it

-Tom Holland’s Spider-Man being referred to as ‘the little nerd’ by Miguel

-When everyone was making puns about the Spot my friend leaned over and said ‘i wonder which hole the spot prefers’ it is a miracle we are still friends actually

-The Donald Grover cameo!!!

-Peter B Parker having a cute little baby with the love of his life is what he deserves

-Miguel O Hara is one step away from becoming a Batman-Spiderman 

-Hobie’s admiration for Mayday being the avatar of chaos Spider-baby

-Screaming ANDY SAMBERG

-I think they saw the appreciation for the art style in the previous film and then trebled it for this film and I cannot thank them enough for it

-Peter complaining about how Miguel breaks the Spiderman tradition of being funny and witty and Miguel being the first anomaly 

-Every scene with the Spot is very unnerving because as I said, you watch him transform from this joker to a literal void of vengeance and it is every bit of terrifying

-Miguel is a man suffering from the destruction of an entire universe because of his selfish actions and forcing that anomaly narrative on a fifteen year old boy who became a spiderman on accident and doesn’t want his father to die because of that. Unlike the Spot, who isn’t even human anymore, Miguel is drowning in grief and guilt and trying to ignore it by holding the weight of the spider-verse on his shoulder. I hated him so much for making a boy go through that but then I just couldn’t in the end. 

-Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire cameo!!! Hopefully we’ll get a fun Tom Holland one too in the next movie.

-’Let me guess, he died?’ being a therapist for Spider Men must be a fairly boring job after a few patients.

-I just loved the absolute of wrongness of the scene where Miles returns ‘home’. The rain and darkness. I didn’t really think about Rio asking Miles what happened to his hair because I thought she was referring to the rain (although of course she wouldn’t ask him why his hair was wet when it was obviously raining outside) but realised something was wrong when he didn’t know about comic con but she did because in the first film there’s a joke about Peter B Parker explaining the concept to Miles. 

- This movie is not good for my father related issues

-The glaring neon welcome sign when the gang end up in Earth 42

-How did Uncle Aaron get even scarier? 

-Miles being the Prowler is honestly a great twist I saw it coming but still felt the shock of the reveal

-Prowler Miles having an accented voice meaning his father probably died when he was young and he only had his mom growing up

-Can’t wait for the original spider team to return for the third film seeing as they brought back Spider-Man Noir and Spider Ham and Peni Parker

-Screaming WHAT when the ‘to be continued’ appeared because that cliffhanger is absolutely destructive. All that adrenaline and excitement just popped. I’m still oscillating between being impressed and being disappointed. 

I probably skipped over a lot of other scenes because these were the most memorable and I only watched the film once (unfortunate) but I can’t wait for the movie to hit streaming services and watch it again and again for all the other details I missed. Ill probably keep adding things as I remember

you do not need to add an apostrophe every 2 sounds and make his speech unreadable we know he has an accent....

use it in moderation . a few sounds omitted are fine but please. you do not need to be doing 4D chess trying to portray every little quirk of his speech

a lot of the times if you over-do the accent it doesn't even sound right when you read it out? (to me it reads like an american or northern accent usually)

trust me we know how he sounds

OKAY OKAY bit of cultural trivia if you want to use slang you're probably gonna be looking at jamaican patois slang (EDIT: MLE or multi-cultural london english is the more appropriate term for his dialect! pls check the reblogs for a better explanation of it by somebody else)

in ATSV the only thing i can remember him saying is "mandem" and he tends to use other phrases like "man" and "my guy" to refer to others he's close with

not every piece of jamaican patois slang is commonly used in MLE

MLE is predominantly found in areas like south london or camden (where hobie is from)

hobie also seems to dial down his accent when speaking to people who aren't from his universe (my reasoning anyway)

his accent is actually very subtle compared to what i've seen irl

hobie is very witty and tends to speaks fast with a lot of filler words like "yeah?" and "alright?" and you wanna focus on things like word order and structure (for example the word "I" tends to be missing a lot so "i went to the cinema" would just be "went to the cinema" etc etc)

im not the best at writing hobie either and i wish he got more screentime but focus on capturing his personality rather than his accent pls

Hello, hope this finds you well!

As a film enjoyer and small artist I was absolutely mesmerised by the animation work in ATSV all around but The Spot in particular stood out to me! I was curious how the process of animating his scenes went especially with all the portals, which I assume many of which were painted in afterwards? Was the way the team thought out his scenes different from other chatacters?

Apologies if I'm asking about something you didn't work on but I thought asking was worth a shot! Anywho thats it, may you have a lovely day!

good question, and thank you! i haven't seen much talk about spot but a lot of development went into his look

for posing, we took a lot of inspiration from the artist egon schiele, an idea from humberto rosa. we wanted spot to look awkward by making him feel like a loose yet controlled sketch, exaggerating his weird long and lanky proportions into very squared off and angular shapes

for the portals, they had to be created in anim first and then fx did a pass on them to add all the little extra swirly bits, and then comp did another pass on them to integrate them into the scene. every element that you see in a shot had to be created in 3D in order to move properly down the pipeline so that the other departments knew what to do with the scene, because they don't always look at the animation playblasts, what matters is what's published in the scene file. we can draw over our shots to try things out quickly but eventually had to put in the work of making them real 3D assets. every portal that you see on spot's body and floating off of him was placed by an animator

near the beginning of production, a lot of tests were done to make spot's face portal more expressive, mimicking mouth and eye shapes as a part of his acting. it was decided that simpler was better in this case, so it was mostly just kept as an oval instead

in order to make a shot like this work in 3D, we used two spot rigs here and a portal tool that let us flatten the geo of the second spot down to 1 pixel so that only his hand can be seen while animating in and out of the portal. nothing is painted over here, this is pretty much 1:1 to what's in the maya scene

in order to progress spot's power throughout the movie, we needed to add more body spots in the india sequence, similar to the second to last pose here (art by aymeric kevin):

our anim tech lead emmanuel gatera worked with rigging to update spot with the ability to turn sections of his body black with the use of a boolean, since it was impossible to add enough spots to totally cover his hands and midsection. he did still need a lot of spots along with the booleans though, i think it was somewhere around 80 (we had library poses for them, didn't need to bring them all in and manually place them in every shot haha)

and finally forget what i said about having to create everything in 3D because the final stage of spot's power was the exception to that rule since he was only in a small handful of shots. nideep varghese animated this shot with the regular spot rig and drew over it entirely in 2D, which the fx department recreated with about a bazillion layers of hand-drawn fx by arthur muller, srdjan milosevic and filippo maccari. lighting/comp by craig feifarek

My thoughts on the “very slow” Miles Morales writing community. Don’t come at me it’s an OPINION! and for CONVERSATIONAL PURPOSES! so comment tell me if you agree or not 😌

There is little to no conversation about Miles. I’ve noticed in the Hobie community they share their thoughts and constantly talk about him and that keeps the community alive and encourages people to join in on the conversation and interact ect…. There’s few blogs now sharing anything about Miles, their thoughts, theory’s, anything adding to the conversation. (I’m not gonna stand on this too much, there are accounts dedicated to talking about Miles and ATSV. But I don’t see much “writers” post about him)

Like with everything the hype died :( the movie came out 7 months ago and like with everything people lost interest and they’re onto the next. We’re constantly being fed new things and searching for new thing that feeds our brain cells and I guess it doesn’t for most people anymore (including me, don’t get me wrong I love Miles and ATSV forever but I’m not enthusiastic as I was because of other reasons.)

The content is limiting. The stories that you’re allowed as a writer to write about Miles is limiting (I’ve been saying this) 👀 I get it everyone loves fluff, fluff is safe but it’s only so much fluff you can make before you run out of ideas and the content gets stale and repetitive.

There’s too much “ranting” I get it, it’s public and y’all can post what you want but we really don’t care and it’s not necessary, it’s a huge turn off for people wanting to join the community if you’re just gonna complain and add nothing but your overwhelming negativity vibes.

It’s a really argumentative/hostile/toxic community (I’ve definitely contributed to that.) it’s a lot of back and forth between people a lot of hateful anon bs, “calling out” like relax btch, stop immediately . People are not on tumblr for that and to be harassed, and it’s definitely a turn off and stupid. Block and have a hood mfn day. It’s really that simple and I encourage you all to do it because you cannot control others.

MHA - this is literally my MAIN DR. its the first ever dr I thought of shifting to and one of my favorites. I can't wait to shift there omg

MHA (fantasy au) - this isn't one of my top favs but it is def a cool one that I would enjoy fs

AOT (modern college au) - this dr is gonna be so fun I just know it

Haikyuu - volleyball is one of my FAVORITE sports so I already know this is gonna be exciting (I also had a haikyuu obsession ever since 2019 quarantine-)

singer - I always wanted to be a famous singer so this made inner 9 year old me SCREAM. I live and breathe music. all kinds of it, too. my playlist will go from SZA to Bone Thugs n Harmony to Billie Ellish and then to Deftones real quick

youtuber - this is another career that 9 year old me wanted. I've always looked up to YouTubers so I knew I would have a trip shifting to where I was one too

street racer - okay Im gonna be so honest and tell y'all rn I don't know jack shit abt cars- all I know is that I wanna have a hot pink car and blast flo milli while dusting a bunch of men in races (hot girl shit I fear-)

90s r&b singer - I love the 90s. the music, the fashion, all of it. absolutely amazing. that's it

band dr - I would love to be the lead singer of a famous ass band. I haven't decided if I was gonna join an existing one or make my own yet but one of the options will be happening

hogwarts - when I first got into shifting a LOT of people were shifting to Hogwarts and honestly I understand why. it looks so fun there man

alice in wonderland - this is one of my FAVORITE movies. I love the weirdness of it all and its just so creative and calming for me. (I intend on scripting I live in a cute little cottage on a hill with my two headed cow because I have a major obsession with cows)

diary of a wimpy kid - I got one name for you. and that name is rodrick mf heffley. judge me I do not care but that man is FINE (he probably smells tho but I intend on scripting he isn't cause who tf wants a smelly man??). i also like the idea of being in loded diper

twilight - I've had an obsession with vampires and werewolves (ESPECIALLY werewolves) since I was in 4th grade so this move series and dr is right up my alley (I'm team Jacob btw even tho he's hella childish)

the breakfast club - the first time I watched this movie I was like "I'm officially shifting there". I love coming of age movies especially older ones like this so I didn't hesitate to add it to my list

riverdale - this series was kinda interesting tbh. I heard it got really wacky after the 3rd season though but I guess I'll find that out when I rewatch it (or when I shift idk). SPEAKING OF RIVERDALE- I had two dreams about shifting there and it was so crazy. like the first one was when I was in the diner with the characters and I was looking for my s/o, but I woke up before I could find him. and then the second dream I don't remember but I had the sensation I kissed someone???? so I'm pretty sure I found him LMFAO-

spiderman (itsv-atsv) - absolutely NO words for this one. I've had an obsession with this one ever since it came out. and I almost screamed in the movie theater when the producers hit us with that "to be continued" bs. also hobie brown <33

descendents - I was into every single original Disney channel movie that was released and this was one of them. AND I could be the daughter of Tiana like??? sign me up fr

monster high - these are literally THE monster it girls. it would be a crime to not shift there

total drama - this was the first reality tv show I ever watched and I was so here for it. they got real creative with the drama too

victorious - I LOVE arts. acting, painting, music, dance, you name it. if I could go to a school like this in my cr I would've already been there (oh wait I technically can)

power rangers - SPECIFICALLY the 2017 film. I don't feel like we got a backstory on half of the characters and its so disappointing but oh MAN when my boy DACRE got on that screen I almost hollered. this movie served so hard and it deserved a sequel badly.

stranger things - this was another obsession of mine and I couldn't have it any other way. its gonna be terrifying but badass (like nancy wheeler when she had that damn shotgun)

mid90s - this was a decision I made last week because I had JUST watched the movie and it was my obsession for a little bit too. I experienced a little home sickness (more like a lot of homesickness because I was SAD SAD)

demon slayer - this seemed pretty fun, but I heard that later down the plot it got boring and sucked pretty bad so I wasn't sure

kpop - I'm not 100% a kpop fan but I LOVE krnb so I was just thinking of making music like that but its still in the works a bit

avatar - I thought it would be cool, but I wasn't in love with the idea like I thought id be. maybe if I shifted to the first avatar I'd like it but idk yet

farm life - like I mentioned earlier I really love cows and thought a farm would be cool, but I kinda fell out of love with the idea so this most likely won't go all the way through

anastasia - this is one of the drs I most likely will still be shifting to because I just love classic Disney movies (and Dimitri was fine..)

ready player one - in all honesty, I completely forgot I intended on shifting there but its a fun ass concept

pitch perfect - okay but this movie was funny as hell plus singing so why not?

tinkerbell - this entire series was my Roman empire. they were my FAV when I was little and still are

10 things I hate about you - early 2000 movies are my favorite so when I watched this, I wanted to shift there asap

i know hobie age discourse is annoying and frustrating. i've been watching from the sidelines ever since atsv came out and tiktok is being absolutely insufferable about it. i've also seen the plethora of arguments from both sides about it. but i wanted to put in my two cents about hobie's age because it has been yelling for attention inside my heart and i need an outlet for it desperately.

so here is my official warning. ⚠️ if you don't want anything to do with the hobie age discourse, please ignore this post ⚠️ (i doubt anyone is going to see this post anyway)

first of all, i ship punkflower. i respect chaipunk as well, though i do not ship it. when i was watching atsv, it never occured to me that hobie would be older than the spidergang by any more than 2 years. so it boggles my mind that people left their theatre thinking hobie was any older than 19 years old??

second, as i've mentioned, i have seen the plethora of arguments coming from both sides. i have heard (incessantly) about the director talking about early concept hobie being 19/20 years old. i always always take early concepts with a grain of salt because that is what they are - early concepts. from the conception of the spiderverse trilogy, a lot of stuff can change. we know that even though early concept hobie was 19/20 years old, his age is now "up for interpretation". all of us were not in the writing room when they came up with hobie. none of us can say for sure what hobie's age is. so let's leave it at that - hobie's age is up for interpretation. i have also seen people talking about hobie being bitten at 16 years old in the comics and in the movies he says he has been spiderman for 3 years. quick maths - that makes hobie 19? well, maybe. it is also important to note that movie adaptations of comics very often leave out or change information. they do this all the time. they even did it with miles. in the comics, miles morales gets bitten at the age of 13. but in the movies, miles get bitten when he was a freshman in visions academy, 15 years old. if they changed that fact about miles from the comics to the movie adaptation, who's to say they did not do the exact same thing to hobie or any other character? using comic book canon to apply to movie canon is always iffy. across the mcu, there are many many comic details that get changed or left out for the movies. this is just something i want everyone to keep in mind.

third, this is my main point. i'm going to talk about hobie's age from a storytelling point of view. keep in mind, i am not a writer. i do not have any experience writing or making original characters. i just like overanalysing creative aspects of media that i consume and i also briefly studied literature in school. if there is anything you would like to counter about my upcoming argument or add to it, i would love to see it.

from a storytelling point of view, hobie being old than 18 years old makes absolutely NO sense. if we look at miles' conflict during atsv, his whole thing is that he feels betrayed by the adults in his life because all of them view him as this incapable clueless kid who needs to be protected. his parents, while being unaware of his identitiy as spiderman, are too protective of him and doubt everything that he does. while they eventually start to accept the idea of letting their child grow up, they only start doing so when miles is already stuck in another universe. the adults in the spider society betray miles too. miles, upon meeting more spiderpeople, probably thought that they would understand him more than his own parents could. however, the adults in spider society still look down on him and treat him like a child. this is especially evident in peter b, who constantly emphasises that miles "doesn't know any better". miles is 16 (in atsv) and while that IS technically a child, those rules don't really apply to spiderpeople. after all, though he is technically a child, he watched his uncle aaron die right in front of his eyes, he saved the multiverse, and he saves brooklyn from crime every single day. as unfortunate as it is, miles has had to grow up a lot faster than the average kid. miles views himself as an extremely capable spiderman, but it feels like nobody else agrees with him. that is miles' conflict throughout atsv.

so it makes no sense that miles feels constantly betrayed by the adults in his life, yet one of the members of the spidergang that he is surrounded with in atsv is an adult? the whole point is that he feels he cannot depend on the adults in the spider society, so therefore it makes sense that his closest allies (gwen, pav, hobie) would be teenagers. making hobie an adult completely throws this theme out of balance.

furthermore, i hear people say hobie holds a mentor role in miles' life. i disagree. peter b held a mentor role in itsv. this was when miles was newly bitten, had no idea how to use his new powers, and had just lost the only other spiderman he knew. in atsv, miles has grown very well into his role as spiderman. he developed his own spiderman techniques, learned how to use his venom shock and invisibility in an effective way, and successfully saves brooklyn from crime every day. this miles does not need a mentor. this miles feels betrayed by the people he thought he could trust. this miles needs allies. that is what hobie is to miles in atsv.

to me, the r/s between hobie and miles in atsv is very reminiscent of the r/s between a new transfer student in highschool and an upperclassman. imagine this - miles just moved to a new unfamiliar environment and is a transfer student in a highschool where he knows nobody. hobie spots him, somehow decides to help him out, and gives him the ultimate tour of the school. not the proper "this is the gymnasium, we hold our pep rallies here" tour that the student council body would give miles. nah, his tour is more like "this is the best place to smoke weed without getting caught. this bathroom is almost exclusively for hooking up. this teacher once called me out for plagiarism, so he sucks." then he pats miles on the shoulder and tells him that he's got his back. if anyone tried to give him shit, hobie will not hesitate to make their lives hell. this is how i interpret hobie and miles' r/s in atsv. he is not a mentor!!! miles is capable enough to be spiderman without a mentor!!!

lastly, this isn't exactly my place to talk about it, but i have heard a lot of black people talk about how a lot of people place harmful stereotyping and adultification on hobie. and the infuriating tendency for people to be against poc ships rather than white ships. and that is A LOT of food for thought. that's all :)

Can you imagine the reaction he makes the moment he gets bitten? Where was he? When did he get bit? There's so many questions that would be fun to think of!

You know how in the first Spiderverse movie, there is the scene where Miles could physically hear his own thoughts in the form of comic word boxes/bubbles? It'd be really fun to imagine something like that with him since a lot of the time he's thinking to himself

How long does he keep it away from Kalim? Does he manage to hide it from him very long? What kind of Super Embarrassing Spiderman Moment does he end up having with somebody when he first got bitten?

How would his spidersuit look like? Maybe something similar to Gwen is what I think, maybe with accents of a snake? Yknow kinda like how Miguel has his whole "vampire spider" stuff.

Okay this ask feels like more that I'm interviewing you but I would love to hear more thoughts you have on this because I'm on a post-watching-atsv surge

I was rewatching the first movie that had Tobey Maguire, and there's just no way Jamil would willingly go to a school trip to a laboratory full of genetically modified spiders and insects or things of the sort 😭 I'll gladly listen to any ideas of how you think the bite would happen. I got no clue.

But when it does happen, obviously he would freak out upon seeing the spider/realizing he got bitten. Frantically wiping off wherever he felt the spider had crawled on him like "EW EW EW EW EW EW" he's devastated. That's the worst thing that could ever happen to him.

Whenever he starts feeling weird after the bite he immediately connects the dots and thinks he's going to die, nobody has ever seen him so nervous.

I'm making up a whole movie plot here, but hear me out. The only reason he doesn't immediately call a doctor is because he has an important basketball game to attend to, and his team needs him. That's where the super embarrassing spiderman moment comes in. He takes the ball and it doesn't want to let go. Struggle in front of the entire stadium, and he kinda had to quit the match since he cannot use his hands and the team ended up losing

The speech bubbles.. so many speech bubbles. Jamil tends to keep all his thoughts to himself so his inner monologue is filled with those. Visually very cool! He got more comic speech bubbles than any other spiderman out there fr

He's probably someone who would hide his powers and secret identity pretty well. Kalim wouldn't really suspect of anything, but he's not THAT oblivious as to not notice something weird is going on with his friend. He just doesn't push to get the truth out of him because Jamil's business is his own. Kalim's sure that if there's something he doesn't want to talk about it, he's doing it for a good reason (this was proven to not be true before, and he should absolutely worry about any secrets Jamil keeps away from most, but I digress). But if the truth's ever revealed, he wouldn't be so surprised, just react with an "oh yeah that makes sense 👍 I've never seen you and spiderman in the same room"

I got to add something you didn't ask anon, but the canon events ran through my mind and I'm making up on the spot what they would be for the friendly(-ish) neighborhood Spider Viper 🤔 it's mostly so tragic though, because the major canon events that have to happen to every spider person are: losing their best friend, losing a father figure (to teach that with great power comes great responsibility 💪), and also get a love interest (I volunteer btw)

I'm looking through the cast of twst and contemplating who's going to be the unfortunate soul for Jamil's uncle Ben, but I'm not 100% sure! What do you think?

Lastly, those are awesome ideas for a spider suit! I'm making something up as we speak, but for some reason I momentarily forgor how to draw and everything I'm coming up with don't look right 😭 I'll get over it soon enough though

Ok, so I've been thinking about this a lot since Gwen is trans in the new spiderverse movie, it made me think back to the first movie, and how that re-contextualizes some things. For me, the big thing is her costume from the first movie, and specifically, her shoes.

She's wearing ballet flats. Ballet flats! I didn't really think anything about it at first, because its like "girl spider wear dance shoes, makes sense." But with her being trans, this means so much more. I did a quick google search, and couldn't really find anything about her dance background in the comics, but it just makes me think. Was she the little boy in class that was a little to into it? Did the other girls like having her in class, until one day they realized that Gwen was different from them?

I can only assume that she stopped going at one point, as her only hobby we see in the movies is drumming, but did she grow out of it, or was she pushed out?

And then she was bitten by a radioactive spider. A spider persons persona is so important, it tells you who they are deep down, or want to be. Peter as a teen named himself spider MAN, and became this confident, quippy guy. So what does Gwen do? She adds ballet flats to her costume, in many ways a symbol of the height of not just dance but femininity. Shes saying I'm not just Spider Woman, but I am a WOMAN. Its just really incredible to me that such a detail can evoke so much.

And then you can say something like in ATSV that now she wears Chucks she's more in line with who she is rather than wants to be and doesn't need to adhere to strict gender roles any more lalala I haven't thought that hard about it yet.

i don’t think miles jumping in the portal after gwen was bad at all.

first, they had already established a lot leading up to this. neither gwen nor miles have that many friends, they think about each other a lot, miles is studying physics so he can see gwen again, he really wants to be able to go through dimensions when he sees that gwen can. of course he would go through the portal, especially seeing as gwen wasn’t doing too well while they were talking and he wanted to make sure she was ok.

second, this isn’t as simple as a friend leaving early. miles and gwen thought they would never see each other again at the end of itsv, because they are LITERALLY FROM DIFFERENT DIMENSIONS. and then it turns out there’s this watch that makes it so they can see each other whenever they want. and miles wants to see gwen more, he wants to see peter again, he wants to be able to do that and he has for a long time. if he hadn’t gone through the portal, would he ever have seen gwen and peter again?

(i'm just gonna keep posting the atsv discourse even though i have no idea what any of you are talking about)

1. EVERYONE SAY THANK YOU TO THE RIGGERS COMPOSITING ARTISTS VFX ARTISTS ETC. THE ANIMATORS DID AN AMAZING JOB OFC BUT THE TECHNICAL WORK ON THIS FILM IS UNBELIEVABLE

2. I knew I was gonna love hobie but I adore hobie. I love how I knew from minute one this guy knew what was up and was out to shake things up. I'm so excited to see more of him in the next one

I really really enjoy the setup of miles being framed as a force of chaos especially compared to a lot of much more put together spider people and having miguel as a foil because he's all about control!! The first part of the film builds up to the reveal so well that I was ready for it in a good way it felt right for him and right for the narrative. Miles' thing in itsv has always been about carving your own narrative and your own way of doing things so it's cool that atsv expands on and really doubles down on it

6. Atsv said cops are always gonna be cops first and good cops quit! I don't think their handling was perfect but I appreciate that much at least

7. God the movement. The visuals. The everything. I want to print this film out frame by frame and wallpaper my house with it

8. When are we gonna find out who the little lady with the heart glasses is huh. I feel like she's kept appearing but there's no actual explanation as to who she is. I'm watching that!

9. I have to include a negative. I really hated the live action inclusions. They felt really jarring and just like something to appease the mcu fans which is not what I'm looking for in these films. Just kind of unnecessary and didn't really add anything imo

10. All! The callbacks!! To itsv!!! Fuck man idk if it's just me being someone who's seen that film 50+ times but there were so many little things I was going nuts. Like obviously there were some really big ones but the ones that were subtle visual callbacks specifically had me leaving this mortal plane. i saw a video on enneagram types and i think miles and gwen are both type 6 but display very different levels of health within that type

itsv and atsv spoilers obviously (not a proper analysis just some thought dump)

(type six is "the loyalist" — committed, security oriented, engaging, responsible, anxious and suspicious according to the enneagram institute)

not going into wings or tritypes because i feel like it'd just get too complicated and too out of character trying to stretch it i just dont think it's necessary

for reference here is some info from the enneagram institute on type 6 (excluding wings and the manifestation of other types):

The committed, security-oriented type. Sixes are reliable, hard-working, responsible, and trustworthy.

Excellent "troubleshooters," they foresee problems and foster cooperation, but can also become defensive, evasive, and anxious—running on stress while complaining about it.

They can be cautious and indecisive, but also reactive, defiant and rebellious.

They typically have problems with self-doubt and suspicion. 

At their Best: internally stable and self-reliant, courageously championing themselves and others.

Key Motivations: (and this is important) Want to have security, to feel supported by others, to have certitude and reassurance, to test the attitudes of others toward them, to fight against anxiety and insecurity.

would also like to add PURPOSE as a core motivation because it provides self-security

MILES is on the healthier end of the type 6 where he's more self-reliant, stable while committed to his core motivations. he trusts in himself even when there's uncertainty about the canon he is adamant on saving his dad because his need to keep his loved ones safe overrides any wider sort of disruption (focuses on immediate personal security rather than wider societal security like miguel or peter b might)

obvi he is a growing as a kid and developing character and you see the basic need to have security and support when he really wants to join the spider society and be involved in something way bigger and cooler and a more "official" community. the society is the peak form of security because it's full of his spider-friends who he finds reassurance in (and just appeals to his nerd self)

i think his core motivations are challenged when he realises he can't be with his spider friends anymore and is sent back to "his universe"

because he realises he can't find security in his friends he goes back to his normal life trying to find that in his family (when he's in earth 42 and tells his "mom" that he made a mistake trusting others and he's gonna stick with his family)

he's still a healthy six though because even at the end when he meets miles g he's ADAMANT on getting back to his universe. he's level-headed, motivated and set on his goal even though hes tied to a PUNCHING BAG and the prowler version of him is right in his face

he is impulsive but self-assured and i think that's what drives him forward WAY faster than any other characters. he's pretty much the only one in the whole spider-society who publicly defies miguel and his canon event theory (and while gwen does this too and asks miguel what'll happen she shuts up like immediately when miguel says "you wanna find out?")

GWEN is on the unhealthier side of the type six and a good contrast to miles' type six qualities; she's almost written like a foil to bring out his more pro-active qualities while she's hesitant and lacks confidence in herself

additionally his fixation on purpose changes a lot in this movie compared to ITSV when he wanted to fill the role of spider-man and be a hero i think miles is more of his own person now and while he mightve not found his purpose outside of spider-man he is still more self-driven than his past self

not hating on gwen by the way she goes through a lot and while it doesn't necessarily justify what she does it definitely makes sense when you consider that she's an unhealthy type six

gwen THRIVES in the spider-society and is desperate to join and keep her place in it because it's what gives her purpose. she doesn't have that security in her personal life like miles might (her best friend is dead, her dad tried to arrest her) so she has nothing to fall back on

she's a LOT more cautious and "lying in wait" in juxtaposition to miles because she's clinging onto what security she's given

she's lacking the loyalty that miles has, trying to be loyal to the spider-society (i dont blame her because this security RELIES on her being loyal, it's conditional) rather than the people she loves or things she believes

this is particularly because she's suspicious, defensive and doubts herself and her ability to bring about change. she just needs to belong so she can't make those decisions for herself and leave the security behind because she's not self-assured and personally secure like miles is.

again going back to miguel's canon event theory when she DOES try to oppose him she doesn't even fully challenge him she just asks if he really knows what'll happen if miles breaks a canon event to which he gives a vague answer and she doesn't question anymore. she's cautious and her beliefs are twisting around what stability miguel's spider-society provides for her even when there's something clearly wrong about it all.

however when she DOES lose that security and is sent back to her universe, because of her unhealthy traits she needs other characters' support. she almost leaves her dad again and then gives up entirely and tells him to arrest her because she believes she has nothing to fight for anymore. she doesn't have security ANYWHERE so she just completely falls apart and loses her purpose.

so her dad and hobie's support are VITAL to her re-emerging as a better character and we can see this with the spider-band she forms at the end of the movie.

she gets that reassurance she needs (that she probably never had) and realises that she CAN fight for her beliefs and the things she cares about. she's still motivated by her security but it doesn't govern her. she fights because of it rather than for it, much like miles does, and finds security in a more personal and self-contained way outside of the society, and that self-reliance is starting to form

I'd like to add that the point of "Excellent "troubleshooters," they foresee problems and foster cooperation" is what makes these two characters great superheroes and work so well in a team i just thought that was interesting lol

again i'd like to point out the reason why gwen and miles are so different is most likely because of their personal traumas. yes, they've both gone through a LOT but gwen is TOTALLY lacking in security (again, KEY MOTIVATION) without the spider-society. she doesn't have parents and friends to return to like miles might (her dad wants to arrest her and her best friend peter is dead)

however i think gwen in ITSV is a lot more of a better display of her healthy type six qualities and miles displays his unhealthier (to a degree at least) type six qualities when he's just starting to be spider-man so seeing them shift and grow and contrast and essentially change positions in ATSV is so cool

i think in BTSV they'll level the playing field and hopefully grow into their healthier selves? again miles is not entirely healthy as a type 6 he pushes people away a lot particularly his own family and parents as much as he might care for them because he thinks he can find better purpose somewhere else (the spider society etc)

would be really interesting to explore their relationship through this lens where they drive each other to be healthier (whether that relationship is platonic or romantic)

i think enneagram types are really cool and while they can be flawed and misinterpreted a lot of the time they're a good tool for characteristation

i watched itsv and atsv a long time ago so my memory is kind of fuzzy x_x

funniest thing about atsv

a while back i heard takuya yamashiro (japanese spider-man from the tokusatsu show) was going to be in it, and, having always wanted to check out that show, i went and watched it, slowly over the course of the past several months (at a rate of like 3-4 per week, 1 ep during each lunch break at work)

a couple days ago i learned that i misremembered atsv’s premiere date (thinking it was late july), and decided to watch the last 5 episodes in those couple days so i could finish before the movie. watched the final one with my breakfast this morning

and you know what? takuya wasn’t even in the movie

at first i thought i just missed him. there were a LOT of spider-men, and if he isn’t in his giant robot then his most unique characteristic is his special watch... but they all have a special watch so it’s hard to look for that

but no apparently he just isn’t in there at all. i looked around online and couldn’t find anything about a cameo i missed, and wikipedia removed him from the list of spider people on the movie’s page. presumably he’s just going to be in the third movie instead

SO, not that i really needed to watch his whole series first, but it’s funny how i did that mini-binge for like, extra nothing. at least it was only 5 episodes in 2 days instead of 10+ per day or something (honestly you can’t even really call that a mini-binge, even. 2 per day since i finished with the last one today)

anyway, i enjoyed the show way more than i expected. yeah it’s goofy in a lot of places but that adds to the charm. i found myself getting pretty invested in it. soundtrack is great too. i kind of went in expecting “so bad it’s good” but no it’s actually just good. like i’ve tried watching the ‘67 cartoon too but that one’s hard to watch because it is pretty bad, so i expected it to go kind of like that
