This is a little bit of an older story, but I was just re-reading it, so Broken Apart (and Sewn Back Together): 

When I first mentioned to my wife (who is also my beta-reader) that I was doing a daemon AU, she had Serious Opinions on the matter. Apparently she has a lot of deep thoughts about daemon!AUs (not for Naruto, but she does RP). So she took my daemon choices extremely seriously. I ended up taking a bunch of daemon quizzes as the various characters, digging through Golden Compass AUs, reading a lot of daemon meta before I settled on everyone’s daemons. I also had to justify my choices to her, why each different animal represented each character’s soul. It was slightly harrowing lol. 

(She was also really skeptical about the choice to have some of the characters’ daemons be the same gender as the characters. She feels that the telegraphing of a character’s sexuality through the gender of their daemon--i.e. that gay characters have same-gender daemons--is narratively lazy. So a lot of the daemons ended up with gender changes in the final draft. I did end up keeping Gai and Lee with same-gender daemons though.)

Gaara’s daemon’s rapid shapeshifting/identity crisis after she falls out of the gourd is basically a list of all the different animals I considered for his daemon before ultimately settling on a hare. 

Gaara’s daemon is subdued by cedar smoke in his gourd during the exams because she does the sleeping for both of them. Since Gaara can’t sleep, Gaara’s handlers have made it so his daemon is asleep most of the time. 

Lee and Gaara’s daemons both settled relatively late. Gaara’s because he was repairing his fractured identity, and Lee’s because he needed to forge an identity outside of emulating Gai-sensei before his daemon settled. His daemon spent a lot of time as a (one-winged) imitation of Gai’s daemon before finally settling on a tortoise form. Something of a reflection of my own dissatisfaction with late-Naruto canon and the fact that Lee never really got to develop out from under Gai-sensei’s shadow, which is what I hoped his character arc would culminate in.

Everyone’s daemon’s names were carefully chosen, but some of them are more jokey than others:

Naruto’s daemon = Kuruton (Crouton), because of that textpost about Naruto being a ramen topping and it being like if a kid in your class was named Crouton.

Kakashi’s daemon = Shiro (White), as in Kakashi’s dad, the White Fang, but also ironic because she’s a black cat (and because Kakashi is a troll)

Gai’s daemon = Hirudora (Daytime Tiger), really just named after his most badass jutsu

Lee’s daemon = Burusu, a nod to Bruce Lee, who Lee’s character is named and styled after

Neji’s daemon = Ori (Cage, but also Chance/Opportunity), for, well, obvious reasons. The Golden Compass canon indicates that a parent’s daemons often name a child’s daemons, so Neji’s parents knew he would have the caged bird seal put on him and named his soul appropriately.

Tenten’s daemon = Redii (Lady), for her idolization of Lady Tsunade

Gaara’s daemon = Kiri-ai, which means cut-love but also sounds like “Kirai”, which means hate or dislike, a dual meaning daemon name to match his own dual meaning name, and rife for the same misinterpretation of parental intentions

ori doesn’t do romance right now because she’s not in a place for that emotionally. but i think... if she was in love, she would be a little bit wild about it. maybe let a little thread of hope in. she is a bit of a capital-r Romantic, though.

anthe is a terribly as such. yeah. anthe’s generally hopeless and generally romantic, and she believes so much in love in all its forms. she knows that love is fleeting, but so is literally everything, and love still rules so hard?

des is also a hopeless romantic, and it kills them--sweeping gestures are NOT chill. they tend to get overinvested in romantic endeavors. it’s a lot.

ori would  only have an instagram account for her art and for blurry pictures of cool plants she’s seen. she comments on her friends post with “Very good post Pen.” and the like. no selfies, never her full name. sometimes the art scans have visible blood on the paper.

anthe uses fuckin tumblr, somehow. she rbs aesthetic shit and makes inscrutable textposts that have way too many emojis. sometimes she will make informative posts about animals or post recipes. deleted twitter after a week because it stressed her out. uses snapchat pretty much exclusively to leave people on read by accident. snapchat story vape tricks.

des has.a student athlete-ass internet presence. the grind never stops. chase your dreams. no breaks. work every day, get better every day. embrace death. 100 emoji. all love.
