#i have to say that the song is from like the 70s and it's not a true sea shanty at all

The 'Lost' Midnights Aesthetic & Big Taylor
When Taylor Swift announced her surprise album Midnights to the world, she was quite literally covered in glittering jewels.
But when the promotional materials for Midnights were posted that night, everyone was really surprised by the aesthetic it seemed to have. No one could guess a genre. We thought it would be gut wrenching and 70s inspired, based on the photos and the blurb about her 13 sleepless nights.
We were fully prepared for our hearts to be ripped out of our chests, and hear a Taylor that was so incredibly raw and tragic. Gaylors specifically ere intrigued by the line
“We twist in our self-made cages and pray that we aren’t - right this minute - about to make some fateful life-altering mistake”
We wondered if she was about to blatantly tell the world what we had seen for years.
But when the album came out, people were shocked for a more synth, upbeat pop album. When she went to events she was star studded (literally) and glammed out. Or bejeweled” you could say.
At first, people were surprised by the switch up. Where was the brooding darkness? Where was the 70s ballads? We tried to understand why these two sides didn’t seem to match up. As if the aesthetic of the promotion and the album itself were disconnected.
In comes the anti hero music video.
youtube
Suddenly, we see the two aesthetics side by side. Telling us that these two Taylors exist simultaneously.
This music video happens to also be where we are introduced to big Taylor. While she’s dressed a lot like the 70s version of Taylor above, but we know they are not the same Taylor because the video shows us so.
Big Taylor is the elephant in the room. She’s the one that makes Taylor too big to hang out…some think it’s because she’s “too famous” but I argue it is more about how she feels about herself. About how she feels like she is too big… takes up too much space.. too loud and too awkward. Something that she had to actively suppress about herself to get people to like her.
So why does big Taylor break my heart?? So many reasons!
The tour visuals truly show what big Taylor represents… it’s her. The real her. Not the sparkly Taylor that’s on stage, but the one who is so frustrated and over it and wants to tear down the city.
In the visual (which is played during Anti-Hero), big Taylor stands up and starts screaming and stomping her feet.
She’s massive and in any other situation, she would be the focus of the crowd… but she’s not… small glittery Taylor is. Even in TikTok videos, you can see the camera pan away from big Taylor.
Sparkly Taylor is the persona. We refer to her at Taylor™. She is the one performing I Can Do it With a Broken Heart. She’s the one who exists to survive in this profession.
And even when she shows us more of her… the duller, neutral, scared, sad her… all anyone cares about is the guitar smashing sparkles.
To the point where now, the sparkles and bejeweled Taylor is what everyone sees midnights as…
In fact, I think that everyone was so distracted by the sparkles, they forgot the prompt behind the album… Her 13 sleepless nights. There are meanings to these songs that are not immediately obvious. But everyone just wants the sparkles.
Did you forget about this Midnights Aesthetic? Let me know your thoughts!

the way everyone has a dislike in their profile that actually says something integral about their character. lu guang doesn't like plans getting messed up, cheng xiaoshi dislikes loneliness, xia fei with owing favors, vein with lying...
and then you have liu xiao, who dislikes... cilantro. and fish mint.
(shakes fist) (putting him in a glass jar and shaking vigorously) learn to be vulnerable!! tell me something about yourself!! I guess him liking movies lines up with the theater metaphors, and there's him liking chess, but that. doesn't count methinks
#mine musings#liveblogging link click#link click#okay the metaphor thing works out a little bit in that. it's on brand#70% of what we know about liu xiao are implicitly gained from other characters#e.g. how xf and ltc relate to him. how the liu family talk about him. how he thematically juxtaposes other characters like lg and cxs#the 30% are the things we know explicitly from him e.g. he's a rich kid with a sports car. he can hear heartbeats#he wants to merge the parallel lines or whatever#the rest are inferences like. oh okay no parallel lines? he doesn't like uncertainties i guess#the way he talks about friendship with xf and ltc? he values a transactional view of relationships#(maybe because transactions imply a certain level of certainty?)#he's the current favored child of the liu family but he wasn't before#he's a “manipulator” but really that's mostly from marketing stuff and implications from canon#like. we know a lot about him but at the same time we don't#the way we just know his uncertainty -> certainty thing contrasts with lg's certainty -> uncertainty thing#we know his heartbeat hearing implies he knows everyone's level of sincerity and both xf and cxs exist as foils to that#the hunter thing with ltc. why does he believe that?#lots of “bringing the darkness” lines in three of his songs for some reason#so like. i can't say that the show hasn't told us anything. they have but in circular ways#we don't know much about him from him directly but we do. know stuff. kinda. do you get me#all i want from YE6 is veinxiao friendship being shown so i can have new dimensions on how lx views friendship#and maybe like. a hint at what his motivations are. like why is he Like That#<- again funnier if he's just Like That from the womb. even if the liu family isn't fucked up he's still Like That#but that's not this show's style so probably not#lx notes#like the INSISTENCE of writing lx as a point of comparison or through other people's perspectives and very rarely from his own#is fascinating to me

Im so tired of Nothingburger music!!!
#i say as a Beatles fan#bc The Beatles DEFINITELY have some Nothingburger songs#KISS has some Nothingburger songs too#like#my music taste is not definitive. it isnt the most correct#i just want some fucking variety on the fucking radio#THERES MORE POPULAR MUSIC!!! THERE'S MORE THAN 3 SONGS#most giant corporations HAVE THE LICENSING TO PLAY WHATEVER THE FUCK THEY WANT#There are THOUSANDS of chart toppers!! PLAY THEM#Everlong. Smells like teen spirit. Micheal Jackson? Single Ladies? I DONT FUCKING KNOW#and one more thing#dont trust modern country music#that shit is straight up Republican Propaganda... Im not fucking kidding#like... You dont even need a strong grasp on media literacy to understand the blatant messaging in 2020s country music#its really fucking weird ngl#theres a difference between down home values and booze from the early naughts and whatever tf is going on now#morgan wallen..... Big red flags from that guy... makes me feel sick#also#side note#Benson Boone needs to give up on his dreams.... Im 70% sure I've heard two different songs from the guy#but they both sound the same. no music difference. no vocal difference. just random crying like a bitch. go back to your day job babe#sad and sentimental lyrics does not an emotion make... like... bruh... Rap has more emotion than Boone's bitchass sqwaking#except rap is deep and meaningful so that comparison isnt fair#music isn't supposed to be boring... Music was always about communicating something somehow#but modern music has it all confused and screwed up and twisted in the pursuit of money#idk#i hate Benson Boone anf Morgan Wallen and if I ever meet them I'll consider breaking their fingers

whats the weirdest submission you've gotten so far
so far: the boy from the dreamworks logo, dads worldwide, every single person on the cast of the deadliest catch, THE TORNADO FROM SHARKNADO, and "the weatherman" from "that sea shanty tiktok"
(if you submitted one of these, i want you to know that i love them all and i am so glad i got to read someone's case for why the tornado is a fisherman)
#but as a sea shanty aficionado: i am of course familiar with the wellerman tiktok#despite the fact that i don't use tiktok#but the fact that they called it the weatherman is very funny to me#and as an appreciator of boat media and nautircal history#(aka ''as a massive nerd'')#i have to say that the song is from like the 70s and it's not a true sea shanty at all#and the titular wellerman was actually two men#and they sold provisions to whalers#but were not (as far as i know) whalers themselves#and therefore they were not necessarily fisherman#but i guess The Weatherman can be in the tourney anyway because (say it with me) it's funny#oops i made a typo in nautical please just pretend it isn't there#the tacklebox

feeling nostalgic and watching utube reactors discover classic songs and then feeling both old and incredulous
#1980s music#like someone watching blondie's rapture and then stopping to go 'oh it reminds me of something it's so familiar'#different people (all younger) do this all the time and it can be infuriating#like it's an older song - did it ever occur to you that maybe what you're thinking of ... took inspiration from THIS song????#although in that case it was rather grandmaster flash and the nyc rap scene bc of course that's what the song was referencing#it's the boss baby meme but in music form#and i know i'm guikty of it too but at least in the correct direction - looking back to things that came before#not being aghast that a beat they've heard s thousand times was sampled from an old song that copied an older song lol#i will say that it is SO weird to me that peopke who say they are into hiphop never seem to reference the rap from my youth#like the late 70s and 80s sound that everything after is built on#and it's not like i know a lot about it beyond watching yo mtv raps at night lol#but i had to watch kids struggle to recognize the warren g regulate sample from michael mcdonald#like SO much of the early sampling era was just tons of samples of old records - anything they didn't have to pay for#and then listening to things and going oh this sounds like the weeknd - bro the weekend sounds like 80s songs#he sings and structures the songs in similar ways to classic tracks rather than the current trend (sometimes)#gah i'm just ranting here rather than in some poor utubers comments#i wish i had some fellow old folks to jabber with#but even when i was in high school i didn't have any friends that liked the same kind of music as i did#bts getting me more interested in music and watching videos has really been a double-edged sword sigh#everything with a live studio band with bass in it: 'oh this sounds like disco'#or worse something literally built off a disco sample and it's like they've never heard a disco song other than ymca in their life

can never describe enough how excited I am for the inevitable 2010s revival of the future
(also this turned into a massive ramble accidentally?)
#like i know there are already kids being like ''i wish i was a teenager in 2014 😭'' but i mean like#you know how like the past 5 years have been so 80s inspired#and also 90s#and how the 90s were really into the 60s#and i cannot wait for all the awful aesthetics that were everywhere when i was 12 to come back#bc i'm curious how it'll look. bc obviously it won't be like. the 2010s are back#it'll be this romanticised idea of the 2010s and i wonder which parts will be rejected and which parts you'll see Everywhere#god i feel like there needs to be a new Thing that causes the need for nostalgia#e.g. in the 70s when punk and indie started as a response to the way music was getting so. idk. complicated or whatever#or like kind of inaccessible to do yourself. like dgmw prog rock slaps disco slaps etc. but not everyone could just. do that#and then punk happened and it was so simplified like no long guitar solos or whatever it was so stripped down. and same with indie#not to ramble about what was in my dissertation but early indie was SO 60s influenced it was unreal. and. it was the nostalgia.....#and then i guess with punk there was new wave and post punk and then new romantics and synthpop and things got synthier and then idk#the 80s were so electronic which. again it slaps. but then it got to a point that it was Too Much again that there needed to be a Return#to the past and stuff. so then grunge and britpop and other stuff happened#and idek it always seems to be there's a new music genre or new subculture that evolves over a few years into different things#before getting too much and the next generation wants to go back so they make a new genre. which then evolves and the cycle goes on#but (at least from what I've seen. which probably isn't a lot bc i live under a rock) there doesn't seem to be anything New lately?#everything's all revivals of older genres now. like i haven't seen any new equivalent to emo or britpop or punk or beat or rock n roll etc#like a thing that Changes the timeline. and i was reading this essay about the new beatles song saying how we don't need a new beatles song#even though the new song's still cool it was kind of saying like everything nowadays is recycled and nothing is shocking anymore#like nostalgia is so big now. with all the film remakes and stuff like that. there is nooTHING NEWLY NEW. IDEK. I am rambling so much#just thinking about many things. this was sparked bc i listened to twilight by cover drive and it literally transported me back to year 7#and that led to early 10s nostalgia and by the time that comes back into fashion will the nostalgia problem be worse or will something have#happened within that time. like a new punk or something. tbf i guess a lot of what I'm talking about is to do with rock and i mean#there's rap and stuff which i don't listen to a lot of so idk maybe there's stuff going on there which i don't know about. but then#i want there to be something i Do know about. like something you can't escape. kids are all dressing like this and listening to this and#we WILL hear about it. new proper subculture that isn't just a week long tiktok trend. ykw i blame tiktok for all of this lol#but yeah. holy shit tag limit#ramble

i've been wanting to commission someone to make a pfp for here, that uses the hat in my current one
cause rn it's fkn boring and beige and not very visually intrestin - and u can't even read the fkn text that makes it worth! (it's a pic of a yellow beige cap (the hat) w the text "ask me about my lobotomy" on it)
idea's to like make it pretty and faggy and me, and Also makes the text any at all readable lol.
but commissioning is hard! you gotta have like a fkn good proposal and have references, and know what you want and able to word that shit - and most often i just struggle w that.
but this time i have a concept (more than what i wrote) but like,,, i don't wanna be roughin it on an artist. i want to be a GOOD commissioner and until i got d girl't balls to do that i am gonna pass.
#i gotta stop my ussy up w my blog honestly. it ain't presenting me so well#like my url also like - i follow so many w excellent urls that it gets more blatant day by day that my urls ain't doing me right.#but its a funny and queer-looking little word! krockat#it's a swedish word. n so i bet a lot of the charm w it is lost on most#it means crashed. basically#but its also just so fun in d mouth nd even mind mouth to say. it also has strong connections w me to queer nd punky nd theatrical things#like inspos me of one of my og fave chaotic n queer coded n dramatic villains - olyckan.#he's from an old swedish kids tv show from like the 70s called trazan och banarne -#which starred two hairy middle aged men wearing animal print - who lived in a jungle tree-house together -#and who made super sweet n funny surrealistic jazzy music together.#and olyckan (meaning 'the accident') was a creepy (💜) human(?)ification of accidents who sang his great villain song about loving accidents#and that if you didn't watch out for him - some STUFF would happen!!! and then he would giggle creepily in his great theatre voice#anyway. so they had an impact. right.#also krockat just invokes things about crashing+ failing and physical and etc pain. so vibes w my multi-disabled self.#it just yea!! but yea it's uhhhhhhhhhh#urgh idk. I guess if it got such strong meaning to me - it dodnt gotta have meaning to anyone else#krockat#the meaning behind krockat#krockat krockar

so maybe they got me. maybe they did.
#anna's fic notes#me 2 episodes into a show: damn i wanna write about this show.#i really think it's the strength of the setting that's getting to me like#i always love when something is new to me and i can fill in the gaps before i actually know what's up#this probably won't turn into a whole fic? or it'll get folded into one once i finish the show#but i have gotten wildly attached to my 'late-night radio taking calls from these horrified children and playing 70s songs' idea#so that might be something someday. i have a playlist of songs that are period appropriate. more black sabbath please#i don't know what people were listening to in england the biggest problem for me about writing about this#is that just. i'm not willing to go through it and try and use slang appropriately. instead i'm just doing my best not to use any i guess?#all i know for sure right now is there WILL be the radio fic and there WILL be something for all those poor kids that we lost in ep 1#when media says 'and this is two years later' that's the greatest gift i as an author can ask for. like yes. a million small things happened#in that time

insane 2 me that eiyuu senki has a translation b4 fate/stay night does
#it's literally EXACTLY what most ppl think fsn is....#plot-light eroge with a 'historical figures (+ knights of the round table) but they're cute anime girls' gimmick#tbf though i've said it b4 and i'll say it again. i am the exact target audience for what ppl Think fsn is from the outside#and one of these days (read: after i get a pc and play through a million other (better) games i have on my list) i'll def play it#if only to analyze it as an arthurian adaptation bc going through conceptually inch resting arthurian adaptations is my hobby#(and when i say that i mean there is a Reason the term 'girlboss arthuriana' was coined (i should know. i coined it.) and the genre is#Oversaturated. i don't want to read another young/new adult novel about an arthurian woman by some1 who Clearly was seized w the need 2 be#mzb 2..... the sequel!. heard the most baseline description of this random lady. and ran w it!#i already know every single plot beat and every single cliche and major arthurian misunderstanding they'll run straight into#and it'd be redundant to point them out or analyze how or why they made certain decisions so i. don't read them anymore!#i refuse to touch anything girlboss arthuriana or openly derived from th white/game of thrones. i will have a much more enjoyable time#trying to figure out how arthurian gacha number 42069 or self published novel abt a minor character you'd have to read med lit#(or at least more than 1 wiki page) to even know or obscure 70s narrative song than touch a single nyt bestseller wannabe)#(*when i say arthurian gacha i don't just mean fgo it's just the most famous example. king arthur is a v popular gacha character and#i've yet to figure out why)#also eiyuu senki has palomydes AND didn't whitewash her so like. !!!!! . i am predisposed to like it more than other adaptations#(<<< has a fave knight of the round table (and it's by a Lot))#+ i'm generally weak 2 knight girls. you should know this abt me already. and percival has a nice 1/4 scale figure so like ....#let's just say i Really want to like it#romeo.txt

YOU LITERALLY MADE THIS POST A YEAR AGO ABOUT GILES X ETHAN SET TO TWIN SIZED MATTRESS but i thought i was alone in thinking this.
“It's no big surprise you turned out this way/When they close their eyes and prayed you would change/And they cut your hair, and sent you away/You stopped by my house the night you escaped/With tears in my eyes, I begged you to stay/You said, "Hey man, I love you, but no fucking way!"
LIKEEEEE…that’s literally about giles returning to the council after Randalls death. Im chewing fiberglass. Sorry .
AHHH SORRY I TOOK AGES TO RESPOND TO THIS ANON BUT YOU'RE SO RIGHT!!!! literally them it makes me feel insane. sooo glad you get it too 'i wanna contribute to the chaos' um. do i even need to explain why that's literally ethan hello.
my main ethan/giles playlist is on my old spotify account and going through some reshuffling atm so while i may share it at some point i can't now... HOWEVER i did recently start a playlist of more. time accurate songs that i could see them acc listening to, so if anyone is interested in that here it is 👀and will keep being updated hopefully 👍
but like. anon literally just listen to sway by the rolling stones. literally ethan's song i promise you
#buffy the vampire slayer#btvs#rupert giles#ethan rayne#giles x ethan#in regards to twin sized mattress - i feel like because of the magic/drugs allegory a lottt of songs about addiction fit them#which is great cos that's a topic ppl write about a lot lol#ok also i was gonna talk about the cut off dates for the songs and how i wanted it to be 1978 because that's when randall's death happened#but um. i can't find info for that date so i very well could have made that up lol#in any case it doesn't matter because don't bring me down is from 79 but i had to put it on... it's such an ethan song#on giles' wiki page it says he accepted his duty of being a watcher in 1980 so lets go with that as the cut off. anything 70s goes :)#also i'm sorryyy there are 3 rolling stones songs on it but they all work so well. there are also 3 bowie songs so i'm not just being biase#need to listen to more punk too cos ik that is what giles would have been listening to... however i do not that much#asks#marchibald's

@jutenium @violecov @entanglementbroke @your-queen-shuri @deadpiano
justiman enjoyers please accept my humble offering. inspired by @nadiajustbe's post about ben's guitar
putting this under the cut because i don't want the caption to get too long.
i Do Not know why justin looks like oscar wilde, i swear it was an accident. i Did draw the green carnation on purpose, and only later realised that green carnations being a symbol of homosexuality is a thing of our world and wouldn't be known in ingary. ....which means ben grew the flowers and gave that to justin Knowing the symbolism. dork.
most of the descriptions in the book are super vague so i just made up the designs. while ben canonically has ginger hair, i don't remember if justin's hair colour was ever mentioned in the books (his blue eyes Were mentioned in cita) but the strangian soldier had grey hair so i was going for dark grey. but the markers i used make everything too dark so it looks black now. not that i'm complaining.
justin's uniform is my design with some inspiration from these. all that was mentioned in hmc were green uniform and long shiny boots, and the green uniform was his disguise according to lettie so ??? i have no idea what he wears when he's not in disguise so have this i guess.
the guitar is mostly based on this. for ben's outfit i went for a cloak-ish thing to make him look wizardly but kept the shirt and pants casual since ben seems to me like the type to wear practical clothes in contrast with howl's flamboyance.
#OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD JUSTIMAN NATION WE'RE SO HERE!!!!!#I LOVE THE WAY YOU DRAW THEM SMMMMM#As for Justin's hair colour for some reason I Imagined the gray hair being some kind of effect of a course/stress showing or smths#so I imagined his natural hair to be like#lighter brown#AND FOR THE UNIFORM I THOUGHT HE JUST WORN ONE SINGLE GREEN MILITARY SHIRT ALL THE TIME#and that's one of the reasons ppl actually found out it's him almost immediately#even though he was in disguise#man worried to much about searching for Ben to re-think his plan lmao#so I thought he just. likes green uniform#ALSO BEN LMAOO THE MASTER OF SUBTLECY (is it how you say it lmao?)#JUSTIN WOULDN'T FIGURE ANYTHING OUT ANYWAY 😔😔#ALSO THE FLOWERS ARE SO CUTE#actually curious about the type of music he's playing#like it's DEFINITELY 70-80s style but what group#what group#hc: Justin actually cannot stand classical music they play in Ingary cause he got fed up by it#(every single meeting or event in the Palace was accompanied by musicians he started getting sick from all the same music pretty quickly)#so Ben's music is like the only one music he can and WILL listen to willingly at any given chance#hc2: Musical instruments in Ingary tend to be slightly enchanted for like loudef sounds and flexibility of the strings#Ben demanded his guitar to stay un-enchanted no matter how bad it sounds for a... reason#so his guitar actually tends to sound more dull and yet MUCH more alive and “real”#one of the reasons Howl bought it#(the one one being physical appearance)#AWWWW I LOVE THEM SO MUCH YOU DON'T GEEEET IT#(also the alcohol bottles😭😭/pos)#fellas is it gay to sneak off with your wizard boyfriend to listen to him play 80s songs#and lie in the grass in your uniform. justin please get up you'll give your royal brother a stroke#<<<<<< ABSOLUTE GOLD DSIJSSKJSSJJS#his brother would have a stroke because one THE UNIFORM two he once again has no idea where to hell is Justin at

The Cadence of Part-Time Poets
The Cadence of Part-Time Poets by @motswolo
Have been working on this 10 volume set for the past few months now, and they are finally complete. My Magnum Opus. I have peaked and probably depleted all of my brain power.
Thank you to @motswolo for writing such a beautiful story. My brain chemistry has been favourably altered. Will forever flinch when I hear Queen, The Beatles or Bob Dylan. Love to you from western Canada (west coast best coast lets gooooo).
I also posted a TikTok of these since posts here are limited and I love the insides as much as the covers, so if you wanna see between the pages, here’s that.
Also thank you @avisbindery for letting me scream and cry in your DMs while I read the fic. May you get some uninterrupted sleep now LOLLL.
Going to write a whole essay below about the ideas and details because uhhh I wanna yap bit!
So for starters, I wanted to make these binds look like magazines because of the epilogue where (spoiler) Tonya sees Remus in a copy of New Musical Express. But of course this fic is long, so I was like, what if I do multiple volumes? This very quickly spiralled into me painstakingly (finding publication-accurate fonts almost sent me to an early grave) recreating 10 different music-focused magazines from the 70s and 80s from scratch (thank you to Photoshop, Affinity, Procreate and Canva). Each volume features a unique cover, along with stylized typesets to match that display the songs for each chapter but in different designs. And then I went a little crazy and made a 45 sleeve and a cassette too, to really set the scene when I took the photos lol
While the covers display the dates pertaining to the contents of that particular volume (Sept 1975 for volume one, for example) I was thinking about what the magazines would say if they were really published when Marauders are traipsing about being spectacular and famous in the future. I sprinkled in details from the fic itself and fanon-ed it a bit, but that was the general inspiration :-) Tried to keep the photos used either faceless/obscured, or to use the fancasts on Mots’ Cadence master post. I also tried to use period-accurate photos but didn’t always succeed, so settled for photos of 4 member bands where I had to :”) But the general intent with the facelessness was that they could be implied to be Marauders. If you squint? lol. Just pretend. Pls.
Volume One: Based upon The Record Song Book. This magazine went on to inspire the typesets, since it publishes lyrics and such. The cover images are of Spacey Jane and David Thewlis.
Volume Two: Based on ZigZag, specifically the issue from July 1978 featuring Siouxie and the Banshees just because I thought it looked sick as fuck. I re-drew the abstract shapes and such in procreate. The cover images are The Clash and a young Gary Oldman. Lord he was foiiine.
Volume Three: Based on Trouser Press, November 1980. The cover images are a young Metallica, and my personal fav fan cast for James, Reiky De Valk. The film negatives are from a Bruce Springsteen tour, 1976.
Volume Four: Based on Gay Times (November 1984), a queer magazine from the UK because this volume contains Wolfstars first kiss hehe. Also hence Somebody To Love plastered all over the covers. The Front cover is Inhaler. The “4A” on this one is of course the boys’ dorm number, but I made the A the lambda symbol as this was a pride symbol in the 70s after Stonewall.
Volume Five: Based on Melody Maker. Front image is Alex Turner. All of the text on this one is pulled directly from the fic. The scene where they all drop acid and James jumps off the roof Almost Famous style had me hootin’ and hollerin’… until Tomny showed up hahaha :”)
Volume Six: Based on IT (International Times, Aug 1971). Front image for this one is Joy Division, and the back features Jane Asher for Lily
Volume Seven: Based on Record Mirror, June 1976. Front image is John Taylor of Duran Duran. Yum.
Volume Eight: Based on Rolling Stone. More vibes than anything for this one, but the quote still makes me laugh. Front image is of Matt Hitt. Can you tell I photoshopped a cell phone out of this one? IDK. This photo just screamed ‘Remus’ to me so I had to use it. The back image is an old cigarette ad, but the photo is taken in Shepherd’s Bush.
Volume Nine: Based on Fusion magazine. Front image for this one is once again Inhaler. Oops. Back cover is our gals. Images are Jodie Foster as Cherry, Brenda Sykes as Mary, and Goldie Hawn as Lottie.
Volume Ten: Based on New Musical Express. You know why :”) These are all victims of fanon, but this one especially. I wanted it to be NME instead of the re-invented logos I’d been doing for all the rest, as I wanted it to look like the magazine the Sister gives to Tonya. I referred to an issue of NME from October 1979 for this and layered in fic references where it made sense to. The cover image for this one is (I think) Cigarettes After Sex. This issue also contains all of the B-Side chapters, and the Marauders song lyrics too just for fun :)
Slasher Chick: This is just my take on what Sybill’s zine could’ve looked like. Prob way off but I just wanted to have fun with this one since I had no cover to reference lol. The zine contains her little write-up and the interview, lifted straight from the fic :")

I remember a friend of mine had some LPs that were Star Wars themed disco albums, and it brought back a very weird memory from back in the 70s (yes, I'm old!) of listening to a Star Wars disco mashup on the radio. What was all that about? I also remember something like that for Close Encounters, too.
You remember correctly, and this went on for a long while. In 1983, disk jockeys around the country played a record that involved an Ewok rapping the plot of Return of the Jedi in Ewokese. This made it to #60 in the Billboard Top 100.

This is hard to explain to people who weren’t there….but in the wake of Star Wars in the late 70s and early 80s, scifi was so beloved and mainstream that the orchestral music for nerdy scifi and fantasy movies about outer space were remixed and sampled into Giorgio Moroder-esque Italo-Disco dance numbers. And the most astonishing thing is, instead of being consigned to convention acts the way “horse famous” Brony dubstep acts are, this received national airplay on the radio, reached the pop music charts, and were played in discotheques. And incredibly, this continued for years and expanded from Star Wars into Star Trek, Wizard of Oz, Black Hole, Close Encounters….
All of this was the work of one specific person: Meco (or Dominico Monardo). The term “ahead of their time” is thrown around a lot, but Meco really was: a combination producer-songwriter and Italo-Disco pioneer in the style of Giorgio Moroder, he did several things that are now absolutely standard: he used remixes and sampling before hiphop made that standard for musicians, he wrote “fandom music” on a Moog synthesizer decades before Bronies turned their conventions into cringey dubstep concerts with songs like “Everypony Dance Now.”
It's stunning to me that Meco has not been rediscovered, considering every single trend in the culture essentially went his way.
The most startling thing about Meco’s Star Wars disco album, the one that got the ball rolling on this trend, is this: I always assumed it was some kind of cash in created by a record label mandate, a label executive’s completely cynical choice to hop on a hot new trend. That isn’t a crazy thing to think at all, since Star Wars is and always has been the most merchandized and sold out scifi property ever. But it wasn’t! You see, it was all the product of a single man’s specific vision: Meco had to convince his record label to make the record because they were skeptical.
When Meco went to see Star Wars in 1977 on Opening Day (what an experience that must have been) with his friend and fellow Italian chest hair/gold medallion enthusiast Tony Bongiovi, he was already an experienced producer-songwriter who had worked with Gloria Gaynor, Diana Ross, and formed DCA, the Disco Corporation of America. If you've ever listened to Diana Ross's "I'm Coming Out," Meco actually played the trombone solo in that song. Seeing the Star Wars movie for the first time, though Meco thought the movie was nothing short of a religious experience. Originally, he wanted to do Star Wars music as a b-side on a Gloria Gaynor album, but expanded the idea into an entire album.
In Meco’s own words:
"When I think about what I did, nobody came to me, nobody said 'Meco, why don't you do this.' Nobody says 'Here's some money go make a record of this movie.' It was just my own... It was magical, it was just out of this world when all that happened."
Not only did this album hit platinum, not only did it actually outsell the Star Wars soundtrack, his remix of the Star Wars theme also went to #1 in the charts. It’s actually the best selling instrumental single of all time. A record, that, incidentally, it holds to this day.
Dick Clark, host of American Bandstand, had this to say about Meco:
"In 1977, Meco Monardo accomplished something no one else has ever done to the best of my knowledge. He was the first one in history to out-sell the soundtrack of a motion picture with his own distinctive version of a film's music. The music was totally danceable, and broke new ground. It's no wonder the STAR WARS THEME went to # 1. I loved his treatment of music from THE WIZARD OF OZ. Again, Meco created something innovative. The fun and the excitement gave a whole new feel to that totally familiar and well-loved music."
Like a lot of studio producers, Meco had an insane work ethic and hit when the iron was hot: he did an album about Close Encounters that exact same year, but also did a Star Wars Christmas Album, one of the strangest pieces of Star Wars kitsch around.
youtube
One of the most interesting things about the Star Wars Christmas album is that one of the songs, “R2D2’s Wish You a Merry Christmas” is the first professional vocals by John Bon Jovi, who was Meco’s friend Tony Bongiovi’s seventeen year old younger cousin (he was initially known as John Bongiovi). It's incredible to hear a squeaky voiced teen Bon Jovi on a kitsch album about a robot Christmas.
1978-1979 was really his best year. Meco made an Italo-Disco remix album entirely devoted to Superman, and at this point, Meco had the pull to get access to John Williams's sheet music for the score before the music even came out. In my personal opinion it's the best of them because he has to recreate it entirely with his own instruments, leading to a very unique sound.
He also did an album based on the Wizard of Oz:
And a combination album of Star Trek/Black Hole. It's probably the earliest remixing date of Goldsmith pieces of music: the Motion Picture Theme (which is now associated with the Next Generation - hearing it done in Italodisco is uncanny) and the Klingon Theme:
Incidentally, I think the design here of the Meco Enterprise, which had to be modified for legal reasons, would make a wonderful canon starship if anyone wants to be inspired by it. It reminds me of the same concept that would be used in the very next film for the Reliant-class of ships.
Meco eventually retired from music in 1985, but unfortunately he is no longer with us, as he passed into the next dimension in 2023. I think he showed us that creativity is often about transformation, and was inspired to make his art by a legitimate awe of space, the cosmos, and human imagination that the scifi movies of the 1970s and 80s provoke.
