"Moth-Soft Murmurings"

Many people have asked me if I consider Egrettail and Blacknose to be a couple (along with a polycule with Mallowstar). The answer I give is frustratingly vague - I do, kind of, but I also am still very strong in Egrettail being aromantic and asexual. An important point to me in her relationship with Blacknose is finding the relationship that works for you, and being able to use the labels that fit you best while still engaging in the love that you want. It's something between romantic and platonic for Egrettail, and that is perfectly okay.

If I'd had more time, I would have liked to go a little more into Blacknose's progressing dementia, but I'm okay with how I ended up portraying it. The extremely sad thing about degenerative diseases like dementia is that while you can try and mitigate them, they are ultimately uncurable. Blacknose had early-onset dementia, so in terms of this comic, she likely spent the rest of her life in the more severe stages of it. However, the strong support of those around a person with dementia will always be a crucial part of helping them live their best life. And Blacknose was lucky enough to have just that.

The title is taken from Harlan Ellison's story "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream": “He smiled softly at the pit that dropped into the center of my brain and the faint, moth-soft murmurings of all the things far down there that gibbered without meaning, without pause.”

the reason why i love the 'i have no mouth and i must scream' radio drama version is not just because of the deranged way harlan ellison says the iconic am hate monologue (by far the most memorable rendition he ever did of it imo), but because of the added lines before it and especially by the end of it. 'were i human, i think i would die of it... but i am not. and you five, you five are. but you will NOT die of it, that, i promise. and i promise for cogito ergo sum, for i am AM, I AM'

Here's a picture of HarlAM Ellison. This will be part of my design for a humanoid version of AM. Part of me feels like this design looks too human. Not sure if I'll rework it. Also I just felt like I really needed to draw something.

I like referring to designs of AM that resemble Harlan Ellison as HarlAM. I will make more art of him shipped with another character later.

I was thinking of trying to make other versions of AM designs like the screen logo AM and bird AM. HarlAM will always be my favorite. I think screen logo AM is my second favorite.

So last night I read The Jaunt by Stephen King, and I went into ìt thinking...."ok...this probably aint gonna be that bad" Like..yeah its supposedly fucked up, but like...I be reading fucked up shit all the time ya kno? This'll probably be mid at best.

So I read it, and first & foremost, the way King builds tension is insane. How the Jaunt workers were getting closer and closer as you progress through the story...?*chefs kiss* Immaculate. (My shoulders were literally next to my ears by the time I finished) They don't call him the master of horror for nothin right? But anyway....when i finished, i was just kinda like "ehh...ok. That's a wild and awful concept, but it's fine. I fly on planes and be anxious AF the entire time so probably would still Jaunt just like everybody else. It ain't that bad. "

But yall...when i tell you this story has stuck with me since last night....And the more i think about it, the more scared i get 😭. I can't even imagine being stuck in the Jaunt for what feels like a billion lifetimes. Like...wtf would your brain even do at that point?? At first you'd just be thinking about how you fucked up and landed yourself in this situation...then your brain starts thinking of every thought/scenario it could possiblely create....but eventually its gonna run out of shit to think....You cant have an infinite amount of thoughts with no new stimuli right? (And that wouldn't even take that long..maybe like a couple years?) So... what does the brain do after??? Just start slamming you with endless hallucinations? Nightmares delusions? Flashes of light? Feelings and emotions that you dont even understand anymore? No coherent thoughts..Grasp of whatever language you spoke long gone...Mind just...gone. Empty. And then you still have A BILLION LIFETIMES OF THIS TO GO?? Bruh....absolutely not.

Then imagine.....you finally get to the other side after millenia of nothingness, your brain mush.....Just to be BOMBARDED with lights..noise...people...touch...smells. Overstimulation on MAX. No fuckin wonder they all died after. Whose heart could take that?!?!

Yall would NEVER catch me Jaunting. Period. Yall wouldnt even see me within 5 blocks of a Jaunt entrance/exit cause i would be tàking NO chances. If i ever even saw a Jaunt station id probaby go straight into a panic attack cause wtf. I literally wouldn't wish the Jaunt on my worst enemy fr. I went into the story thinking nothing could top I Have no Mouth and I Must Scream, but this......this is definitely up there. And I guess...sometimes you gotta let shit marinate before you realize how terrifying it actually is hahah

I will never not be amused by the endless irony of AM and how he, a machine with nothing but hatred and envy for the humans who created him, was so loved by his Harlan Ellison (the original author of the story, AKA his real life creator) that he HAD to voice him in every single installment of IHNMAIMS possible, not letting anyone else take him.

The very thing AM hates most is the one that gives him life and keeps him alive outside of the narrative. In a way, it's similar to how he keeps the five humans alive in the story, but at the same time it's the opposite spectrum of it: the burning hatred of the machine versus the boundless love of the artist.
