But for real. Imagine. A boy, all of 13, inserts himself into Batman's life when he's at the lowest. He saves him both literally, by taking out Robin's suit of the case and rescuing Batman, and metaphorically, by filling the hole that previous kid did.

And he's so much more... Suitable, for being Robin. So smart! And never gets into the sort of trouble that Jason did.

Jason...

The kid just disappeared one day. Bruce never found out what happened to him. He looked, yes. But... Who knows? He might have just ran away, or wanted to. Never liked to face the punishment, take responsibility for his actions: Bruce benched him and he sneaked away. With his Robin training, it would not be that difficult to wipe his own traces. And yes, Bruce worried, and yes, Bruce looked. But in the end... Leaving was always Jason's choice.

It's not that Bruce didn't suspect that something might happen to him. Jason never contacted Dick, or Barbara (even after something happened to her!), or Alfred. Never showed up in school - well, he probably gave up on it. Always wanted to take short cuts. But no, Bruce considered that he might have... That something might have happened. He filed the missing person report, even. But nothing came of it.

Jason disappeared, and yes, Bruce was hit by it deeply. It's now, years after, he can talk about it calmly. Wherever he is, Bruce hopes he's happy. But then he just left... Bruce was out of his mind with worry, with guilt. Thank God for Tim, really. If it wasn't for him... He might have ended up doing something stupid.

So Bruce might be holding his grudge, still. As much as he hopes that Jason is happier now than when they were together, he hopes to never see him again.

He has Tim, now. Tim's great. Sociable. Likeable. Never crosses any lines. Except that time... And then... But it's excusable. Understandable. Not like it was with Jason.

Jason was a criminal waiting to happen. Probably happened, now.

Been in a Batfamily (in all it's fucked up drama) mood lately and thinking...

Jason gets into town, starts establishing his Red Hood persona, screwing with the Bats and taking over Crime Alley. He intends to use the new Robin to screw with Batman and manipulating Black Mask into reporting the new Red Hood back to the original. And as planned, Joker does not respond well to 'some upstart' using his old moniker.

Except when Joker breaks out of Arkham he can't help but be distracted by Batman and his shiny new Robin. (Has Joker been out while Tim's been Robin at this point? Let's say no for the sake of fanfic purposes.) Now Harley made Joker promise no more killing kids after what happened with the last Robin, made it clear that was a hard boundary for her and she'd leave him for good if he want after any more kids.

Of course, his promise that of course he wouldn't kill anymore kids was a total lie but it got Hartley to go all soft and agreeable for him again and that was what mattered. Besides, he doesn't want to kill this Robin. He wants to see what Batman sees in having child sidekick and take one for himself.

So Tim gets kidnapped by the Joker before Bruce can send the poor kid somewhere not Gotham for his safety. And Joke unmasks Tim because of course he does. And Harley sees how young Tim is and watches Mr. J start electrocuting the kid because surely the brainwashing'll stick if they fry his noggin' a bit first...

And Harley decides this is a boundary for her too. She can't be a part of this and even if it kills her, she's going to save this kid. She knows she can't do it on her own and her first thought is to go find Batman.

Of course, she quickly nixes this idea. Batman isn't ruthless enough and sure maybe he'll make it all the way through Joker's henchmen - admittedly as per usual - and rescue the kid. But then Mr. J will go back to Arkham and even though Harley doesn't want Joker dead... she also kinda wants him dead for this one. For using his promise to her not to kill kids as an excuse to torture children instead.

Next choice is Nightwing but he's out for the same reasons as Batman. Nightwing is somewhat more likely to kill the Joker and could live with it in the way Batman couldn't, but it's not a guarantee and Harley wants this kid to know that the guy who did this to him will never be able to do it ever again.

And then Harley remembers. Red Hood. Who definitely picked that name not as an homage but as a taunt. Who clearly hates the Joker and all he stands for. Who will... probably kill Harley, let's be honest, but she's not sure she wants to live without her Mr. J even as she's mentally planning out the man's death. So.

Harley makes an excuse to leave. Joker says something about mom doing the grocery shopping to the kid he's electrocuting and hands off a list of random stuff to Harley. She takes it and skedaddles. Heads all the way to Crime Alley. Stands outside it for a long moment. Thinks about the kid Joker's gotten his hands on. The way he screamed and cried and begged for Batman to come save him after the bravado of Robin quickly wore off.

She steps into Crime Alley. And then she does random acrobatics down the street, waiting for the Red Hood or his men to show up.

And they do. The Red Hood's henchmen are quick and efficient in grabbing her and presenting her to their boss. There's a gun in her face and she should be terrified and she is but...

She tells Red Hood about the kid. She drops the fake accent she put on for Joker and let's herself be, for just one last time, Harleen instead of Harley. The doctor who cares and not the killer Joker molded her into. "So kill me or whatever, I know I deserve it for believing Mr. J's lies again. But you have a code. You don't hurt kids. You don't kill kids. And maybe I'm asking too much, but I wasn't there and didn't save the last one. So I'm begging you to save this one."

Jason sees green. He has Harley take him to the Joker's hide out. He tears his way through the Joker's goons and doesn't hesitate to kill the Joker because he's too deep in the pit rage at the man who murdered him to care about his convoluted plans to try and force Bruce's hand, to make Batman finally kill Joker.

On the bright side, killing the Joker himself clears up some of Jason's lazarous pit related anger management issues. On the spot. The down side however is that Jason now has a traumatized Tim to deliver back to Batman - which he'd rather not, Batman cannot be trusted not to weaponize children - without being blamed for the state Tim's in.

He makes this Harley's problem - explain this to the Bats yourself, it's your punishment, Harley - and decides he needs a new plan to say 'screw you' to Batman with. He's gonna win over Robin 3.0 and get the kid to willingly abandon Batman to join the Red Hood Crew. How hard can it be, anyway?

Meanwhile Tim has absolutely figured out Jason is the Red Hood because he's absolutely connecting dots he should not be capable of connecting and formulating his own plan to try and lure Jason back home. Because why would Tim focus on healing from his own trauma when he could prioritize someone else's and compartmentalize the hell out of his own problems. Which is definitely the healthy thing to do and not at all going to bite him in the ass with depression and miscommunications down the line. (They all need so much therapy.)

So now the Joker's dead, Harley has delivered Tim safely back to Batman, (Ivy is about to get an unexpected visitor,) and the Bats are about to start playing four-d chess with each other to try and achieve various goals. Jason is trying to steal Tim from Bruce. Bruce thinks maybe saving Robin means the new Red Hood could be saved from himself after all. Tim is trying to lure Jason back to the manor for Alfred's cookies and oh is that a long overdue conversation with Bruce that is also sprung on him like a trap??? And Dick would just like to thank Red Hood but somehow winds up drunk confessing to the definitely-a-hallucination-of-Jason the whole didn't find out his little brother was dead until after the funeral when Dick got back from space thing and how he's so grateful to the Red Hood for saving this new kid who's just the neighbor's kid but also rapidly looking brother-shaped and why is he so bad at protecting the people he cares about???

Doctor Danny chapter 4

Ice cold water splashed on Danny's face, soaking his hair. Danny woke up blearily wondering when his roof had started leaking.

He opened his eyes hand almost gagged . He was met with the exact person he wanted to chew apart.

Jason was running across building at top speed. Danny's apartment was a wreck and he was nowhere to be found. Jason had only looked away for a few hours, who knew Danny would be targeted already.

Well there was the News that had displayed him the previous day.

"Wakey wakey hero"

Danny squinted as his vision became clear.

"A clown?"

"I saw your little show and decided to break out of Arkam sooner just for you. It's my turn to put on a show now"

Danny wanted to strangle him right then but there were people around. Well they were just henchmen, if he knocked them out then they would see anything.

More importantly he had a few ideas on how to handle the joker.

"Put on a show, how about I do to you what you have done to countless of my patients" Danny threatened glaring murderously.

"Patience, I'll kill you after I tune in out friends"

Danny rolled his eyes. Back in the cave Batman had received an alert that Joker had broken out of Arkham.

Apparently he had kidnapped a prestigious doctor too.

"Incoming video call" the bat computer alerted.

The screen went black for a second before a smiling joker appeared in front of the camera.

"Hello batsy"

"Joker" batman growled.

"My friend here-"

"Shut the duck up! We are not friends GOD!"

Batman was taken aback.

"I'm going to beat the everloving hell out of you!" Danny shouted.

"He's cranky, I'm going to kill him slowly, break his resolve-"

"NOT BEFORE I BREAK YOUR FACE!"

Joker looked seriously annoyed.

"Let's get started shall we"

Joker picked up a crowbar.

"Remember this batsy, this should be so much fun. I just love reunion's"

Joker smiled before turning away from the camera.

"Joker!" Batman shouted from the other end of the screen.

Joker raised the crowbar and brought it down crushingly hard into Danny leg.

Batman waited for the screaming, but it was silence.

"Oh my bad, ~ow that hurts so bad~" Danny mocked.

He had phased out of his bindings and was now standing off to the left of joker.

"What- how did you get over there?!"

Danny gave Joker a sadistic grin.

"I'm a doctor Joker, I don't kill, but I did promise someone that I would tear off your arms if given the chance" Danny said as he rolled up his sleeves.

Batman was frantically trying to find them before the good doctor did something he regretted.

"Get him!"

Danny smiled and took on the henchmen, knocking them out quickly.

"How in the hell?! Just how weak are those stupid-"

A punch to the face caught off Jokers words.

"Hey joker, buddy. It's time I break you, permanently"

"Wha-" screams of utter agony filled the room.

Jason had found the building joker was holding Danny. He hadn't started to worry until he heard screaming.

Jason ran as fast as he could. The sight he was met with was not what he was expecting. Joker was laying on the ground with his arms bent in ways they were not meant to bend.

"No,no wait, Im sorry for kidnapping you AAAAHHH"

There was a satisfying crunch sound followed by a pop. Danny turned his head sensing another presence.

"Oh hey!"

"Hey?"

Danny had his foot on Jokers back.

"I was just teaching him a lesson" Danny said with a shrug.

"But his arms are still attacked to his body, I thought you said you were gonna rip them off"

"Well I mean, I broke most of his fingers, hell probably need crutches to walk right after this anyway"

"MY LEGS ARE FINE" Joker shouted from the floor.

Danny shoved the crowbar through his leg.

More screams followed.

"Like I was saying, he's gonna need help walking, hey Hood?"

Jason tilted his head, "hm?"

"I'm not going to jail for this right, it's definitely self defense right"

"You'll be fine, I mean, you might wanna get out of here though. The bat daddy is on his way"

Danny nodded glumly.

"I want to make something clear" he said crouching down to the half conscious Joker.

"I'm not proud of what I did today, but I can't stand by and watch you kill or injury any more people. You, will never touch another person again or I will come back for you"

His tone was more menacing than he realized and the Joker was terrified.

"That's the dude that killed me"

Danny whipped his head around.

"What?! He's the one who beat you death with a crowbar?!"

Jason flinched.

"Sorry, I know that not a comfortable subject I shouldn't have brought it up"

Jason shook his head.

"It's not you who should feel sorry right now"

Danny grabbed the crowbar and Jason had to take it from him.

"Your not killing anybody today Doctor. You still have patients waiting on you"

Danny sighed.

"Alright, let's tie him up and get out of here then"

"What?" Jason asked. He wasn't sure why Danny was thinking about him.

"Well I'm not gonna leave you here to face off with Batman"

"Too late, both of you better start talking. Now" an intimidating voice ordered.

Danny half near jumped out of his skin.

"Um hey bat-babe. See, my friend here and I were just passing through and we'll be on our way now. Bye"

Jason grabbed Danny and shit his grapple hook at the nearest window.

Danny was pulled into the air, gliding as Jason swung. They landed on the nearby road and didn't stop running.

They crashed at Jason's place instead of Danny's.

Danny was out of breath by the time they reached Jason's apartment door. Once he was inside he fell the the ground laughing.

"Hahahah, I can't believe you did that!" Danny cried out as he tried to breathe.

Jason took off his helmet.

"Really? Well best believe it because Batman is a hard nut for sure. Your gonna be on his wanted list now"

Danny's laughter was cut short. Jason turned and saw tears.

"Danny? What's wrong?"

"I can't go to jail Jason! I'm too young, I have my career and I'll be targeted for my good looks!" Danny sobbed.

"Your not going to jail" Jason said sitting down in front of his couch next to Danny.

"And if the bat come for you I'll wrestle him alright"

"Mhm"

Jason stared in front of him.

"I don't think Joker will be able to hurt anyone for a long time, you did something amazing Danny. Your amazing you know that"

Silence...

"Danny?" Jason peeked around Danny's shoulder to see Danny's head slumped down.

He smiled to himself, today had been a hectic day especially for a civilian.

Danny twitched in his sleep. Jason picked Danny up carefully and laid him on his bed before turning him in.

Danny woke up the next morning on the floor not sure where he was.

Flashbacks of yesterday popped into his head without permission. Joker, Batman and...Jason!

Danny sat up and saw the mess he had made of Jason's bed. Everything was pulled off the bed, nothing survived Danny's late night wrath. Danny worked quickly remaking the bed with help from his skills earned during his intern days.

He only considered it finished once there were no wrinkles too be found.

"Hah, I need some water" he muttered before making his way around the unfamiliar space. On his way to the kitchen he spotted Jason on the couch.  His arm was thrown above his head and the couch looked entirely too small for the man.

"Pfft"

Jason opened one eye.

"Are you laughing at me?"

"Noo, I just noticed how manly you look today"

Jason sat up.

"Yea alright wise guy"

Danny was about to make a wise crack when his eye caught sight of the clock.

"OH MY GOD!" he shouted horrified.

"I don't report to work yesterday!"

Jason grabbed the panicking man.

"It's ok, I called the hospital and explained that you were in danger. They took a little to convince but I managed to get you the day off"

Danny almost fainted.

"I can't take a day off! What about the patients??"

Jason sat Dany down and kneeled before him.

"Do you not have faith in your fellow doctors?"

"I-I do"

Jason nodded.

"Danny, all you've been doing is looking out for your patients. In order to care for them you also need to be healthy"

"I'm healthy, look at me, I have muscles" Danny said jabbing his arm as if to prove it.

"I see that" Jason said unimpressed.

"But I'm talking about mental health. Take a day and just let someone else take care of you"

Danny scoffed.

"Yea right, like who?"

Jason smirked.

Ooooommmmgggg i love golden chain! Its so good, Jason keeps getting more and more toxic towards us, suffocating us but he doesn’t care because we have him and what else could we need? I just know he was seething at seeing replacement Robin there, trying to take you away from HIM and i KNOW seeing Batman trying to save you didn’t help anything.

Batman sending Robin there means that he either knew where we were and was jut waiting for a time to strike or Jason had slipped up somewhere, doesn’t matter now bc now he’s kept you away from Batman again and AAAAAAAAA the small parallels between how Joker treated Jason to how Jason keeps us. Snatched up under Batman’s nose, kept secluded in a place no one would expect, Jason giving you that necklace and being gentle but firm that you keep it on, like how he can’t escape his own brand you can’t escape Jasons love obsession, and even eventually chaining us to a chair after escaping Batman? Love it, he’s awful he’s never letting us go, Joker won’t leave him even if he’s dead and by god Jason will make sure it’s the same way with us

He also definitely didn’t let our friends Krystal, Destini, and Robbi live, trying to warn us like that? They’re dead im so sorry my lovelies hes crazy

Between you and me, I do plan on continuing the series, I don't have too much written down for it right now, but I'm planning on calling it A Glass City.

I'm so thrilled people picked up on the parallels between how Jason's treating you and how he was treated! It's angsty, and I actually made myself unwell over it.

I'm more or less following the games timeline, and right now, Batman has no idea who the Arkham Knight is. What Batman does know is that the Arkham Knight kidnapped Jason's best friend.

Batman thinks it's a way to get under his skin and show his failure over not saving his last Robin. He has no idea that you being taken has nothing to do with him and everything to do with you.

Robin being the one to save you was pure coincidence. (On Batman's part, intentional on mine) Bruce, again, has no idea that you're important to the Knight. He had no idea that AK was going to drop everything to get to you, because he assumed you were just a tiny part of the game.

Robin was the convenient one to send, and it definitely made Jason more volatile than he would have been if Nightwing went instead. (He probably wouldn't have jumped off a building with you)

Some light spoilers under the cut about Bean and your three friends:

Bean is okay and will return in chapter four!

Krystal, Destini, and Robbi are alive, I SWEAR, but he definitely scared them. Jason knows you like them, and it would only be a problem if he killed them.

Honestly, they've been really nice to you, and he knows they make you happy. If anything, he wants them to keep doing their job after this all blows over. (If he gets his way and wins)

Just read Detective Comics #726 and was struck by how much the relationship between Batman and the Joker is defined by hope

The Joker often acts as a sort of reflection to Batman's crusade as a whole, and his relationship with Gotham. The Joker constantly tries his best to beat hope out of Bruce. Like in the Killing Joke, his whole thing is trying to show that everyone is like him. That Batman is the same as him. He's wrong, of course, and I think a big part of that is that idea of hope.

Whether TKJ's version of Joker's origin is correct or not, it shows Joker losing hope. He loses his fiance and baby and just... has nothing left, which is why he becomes the man he is.

Which of course brings us to Death in the Family, where the Joker kills Robin, the literally embodiment of Batman's hope, his light in the darkness. And Bruce almost loses it. He almost kills the Joker, he almost brings himself down to that level. But Bruce is better than the Joker, and (though possibly a quirk of the writing evolving) becomes much stricter with his no kill rule. He still has hope he can make a difference, and he knows he can't do that if he kills and turns himself into another Joker.

All this is what makes DC 726 so interesting. It takes place on the anniversary of Jason's death (probably the second one based on the timeline), where the Joker manages to plan and commit a crime despite being in Arkham. He's convinced another villain who was about to be released to kidnap a little girl on that specific day, so that Batman would know it was him and come to him for information. And Batman does come for information, and... the Joker gives it to him. He doesn't entirely refrain from playing games, but he actually tells him where the girl is in time for Batman to save her. After, Batman asks him this:

The Joker told him the information honestly, in order to give Bruce hope. Forever, Bruce will have that hope that maybe he got the information in time. He gave him hope for the express purpose of taking it away again when he finds the person he was looking to rescue dead.

All this really tells us about Joker is that he is a cruel, horrible man (which we already knew). So the question then becomes, is he right?

In TKJ, we see that he is wrong. His "one bad day" for Jim Gordon only makes him more determined to do things right. But this comic doesn't expressly show us either way.

Has this given Bruce hope he didn't have before? I don't think so. While the Joker and Batman can be reflections, I think the Joker sees too much of himself in Batman.

Batman is a symbol of hope. Bruce himself is always full of hope: hope in his city, hope in redemption for his villains, hope in his family. The Joker, who has no one and no purpose besides Batman, can't understand Bruce's innate hope. So despite the ominous ending of this comic, I can't help but think the ending's wrong.

Bruce will have hope in the future, yes. But he had hope before. All the Joker did was let him save a girl's life, because no matter how much he tries to say otherwise, Batman is not the Joker. And as long as he keep that hope, he never will be.

You're naive. You had a similar goal to him for the longest time, protect Gotham by preventing crime. You should know it's impossible...

Crime runs too thick in the blood of Gotham to be purged.

It was strange how much you mirrored his ambition. You were like him before this city tainted him. Before his mentor left him to die.

Batman is not the hero here, you aren't doing anyone any favors by staying with him. He wasn't sure why he liked you. Did he envy you and the other heroes taking his place?

Maybe he just wanted to hurt the old man even more?

Was that why he did everything he could, despite Scarecrow's wishes, to go toe to toe with you? To insult your loyalty? To defame Batman's legacy in front of you?

He found it funny how you jumped to defend him! Did he not tell you any of his failures? Especially not about Jason Todd?

No... because why would he?

You have no idea that Batman would sacrifice you if he needed to. You look so innocent when defending your mentor. He's not the good guy here, baby...

No one is.

He made it a goal to hit Batman where it hurts. You were the key to that. Just his type, too....

It was almost all a perfect mirror of that night. You tied to a chair in rope with the Arkham Knight standing over you. Just like Joker and little naive Jason Todd.

"Looks like the baby bird fell out of the tree..."

He taunts, circling your tied figure.

"He won't help you. That bat can't be trusted with shit."

"What makes you say that!? Why do you hate him so much!?"

"Why? Oh, you poor naive robin...."

He stops in front of you, staring at you through his visor.

"He isn't perfect like you think."

You struggle, gritting your teeth. Even that rebellion of yours... he used to be like that. Until he saw the truth....

"He's a hero!"

"You must be remembering wrong."

The Arkham Knight scoffs, leaning closer.

"He's a failure, just some guy in a mask, he thinks he's helping this city. He can't, you can't, he can't save anyone."

He chuckles to himself, tapping his helmet.

"I'm living proof, baby."

"Who do you think you are..."

"Someone meant to put the bat in his place."

He pulls away before you try anything. He was wearing some pretty high tech armor. You knew you couldn't take him down in your current situation unless you got the upper hand-

"Does the name 'Jason Todd' ring any bell?"

You pause your planning to stare at him in shock. That name sounded familiar.... Batman never liked bringing it up but you did hear of the... incident.

"Based on that expression, I suppose you have. It's adorable, by the way.... Both your expression and emotions are too cute."

"Cut it out. What do you know about him?"

"You'll never get this secret out to Batman but... I'm him."

"And I'm supposed to trust you?"

"Well, you trust Batman, do you not? What makes you think you can trust him?"

"Shut up...! What the hell do you want!?"

Jason Todd, as you're supposed to believe, pulls another chair in front of your tied one. You could tell he was keeping you in a warehouse. Where exactly was unknown.

"You and me aren't too different. When I was younger, I acted the same to Batman. I'd defend him to the end. Then, I grew up. With the help of torture, death, and resurrection...."

He tightened his fist. You saw he was recalling a painful set of memories but could only sit back and listen. He did seem like the real deal... so Jason wasn't dead? He was now a criminal?

"Now I got this gig for Scarecrow after awhile. I met you and decided you were the key to my vengeance. I'm going to make Batman lose another...."

His helmet snaps up to you.

"Just like me, he'll lose you. Then I can watch him suffer. He'll always know he can't save me, or you...."

"You're going to kill me?"

"No...."

"Then what?"

There's a long pause before Jason continues.

"While we fought, while I tracked you down... our similarities struck with me. You could say, I fell for you. Maybe I got so obsessed with vengeance through you, I became obsessed with you. I'll just stage your death in the exact way I died. It gets the message across... and I get to keep you."

This... confession of his disturbed you. Made you sick, even.... What did he think this was? Some Enemies to Lovers trope? He wasn't even trustworthy....

"Hell no.... You'll get thrown in jail. This is against the law. Batman will-"

"Still on the hero schtick, huh?"

Jason stands up fast from his chair, towering over you.

"Fuck laws, you're mine and I'll do anything I can to let everyone know it."

He holds your chin up with a grip so tight you thought he'd break it. You struggle though he doesn't allow it. You thought he'd hurt you, hit you and beat you until you stop resisting, yet he doesn't.

He was either better than that or had self-control.

It's been about a month since Bruce died, but from grief, you, Tim, Dick, Barbara and Jason help continue to keep Gotham City safe as the Gotham knights. But even with this newfound family, there was one bit that Jason continued to struggle with, his past. His death at the hands of the Joker still haunts him to this day, the events replaying in his mind and taking a toll on him. But you always help him see the light when it seems too far away. He was forever grateful to have a friend like you.

But not to Jason's knowledge, you were also affected by the clown prince of crime. When you were only 7 years old, your dad was murdered by him. It was horrifying, to this day you can't think of him without seeing him in your head and also hearing that horrific laugh.

It plagued you no matter where you went, but for the sake of the others especially Jason, you never told them anything, you didn't even tell Bruce before he died.

One night out on patrol, you and Jason were investigating a crime scene that had Harley Quinn written all over it. you thought you could handle it. It was just a crime scene.

"Y/n how's it looking from over there??" Jason asked you as he scanned the footprints to find her.

"I think I got something but I need a bit more time to figure out what chemical it is"

"More than likely it'll be his laughing gas"

Hearing laughing gas sent shivers down your spine, but right now you needed to focus, you needed to find the chemical so you can be able to trace it.

After which you finally detected it.

"Red hood I got it"

"Awesome, your detective work is getting a lot better"

"I could say the same for your less destructive habits" You smirked under the mask.

"Oh come on man that only happened once... Twice"

You snickered as you both got on your bat cycles following the trail back to where it would lead into the abandoned chemical plant where both he and she were born. This night just keeps getting better and better for you.

Grappling into a nearby vent the two then entered inside. Making they're way inside finally. They then find the people Harley has kidnapped.

"Be sharp y/n, she can be very very unpredictable" Jason warned

"G...Got it" You couldn't help but stutter as you continued through the plant.

Now normally Jason would let this slide, but from the tone of your voice and stutter, he knew something was wrong. And come on he's your best friend how could he not see when something is wrong with you. You always looked out for him, when you both head back to the belfry. he was gonna help you.

You both then started to hear scared voices and a cackling giggle from the one and only.

"Play nice boys, or you're gonna meet the same fate as your friends did." She swung her electric mallet just barely touching their faces as a warning.

"You won't get away with this Harley"

"Oh, won't I now ??" She smirked as she began to do shit talk them and tell them her plan.

You and Jason got to the ground as quietly as you could. sneaking to where the kidnapped police officers were. With a nod from Jason, you then lunged at Harley and began to fight her. While she was distracted, Jason then freed the officers and got them out safely and quickly before coming back to you and finishing Harley off.

"You little bat brats !!!"

"It's over Harley, you're going back to Arkham one way or another" Jason cracked his knuckles.

"I'll be sure to put you down 6 feet under and make sure your friend doesn't revive you this time !!!" she cackled as she swung her mallet at you before you quickly dodged it. The cackle triggered you, the memories were flooding back. The sight, the sounds, Him...

Jason saw you were distressed even if you put up a fight, but right now you two needed to finish Harley off quickly. So Jason took out his non-lethal stun bullets and loaded them up, shooting Harley a few times, tasering her to the ground. It was over, Harley's reign of terror was over.

The police came and arrested her, taking her back to Arkham Asylum. You and Jason's job was done. But riding back to the belfry, Jason knew he had to ask you. So once you both settled down, changing into your pyjamas for the night...

"Y/n I need to ask you something, What happened back at the plant ??"

"It's... It's nothing Jason"

He placed a hand on your shoulder gently and turned you around. He wanted to help you.

"I may not be good with this kind of stuff... but you can talk to me. You know that right ??"

You looked down on the floor, you knew what he was talking about. About why you seemed distressed fighting Harley... Your stutter...

"When... When I was 7..."

Jason listened attentively.

"My dad... was murdered, by Joker... All my life... was overshadowed by him. Even one mention of his name triggers me into seeing everything again... How do you do it Jason ??"

"What do you mean ??"

"How do you deal with it... the pain ?? how do you keep yourself in check when hearing his name"

Jason never really thought about it too much, this was the man who killed him, but after that, he never thought much. he does sometimes but not even every mention triggers him. He could see the desperation for an answer in your eyes. Like a lost dog out in the streets.

"Y/n... I know It's hard. believe me, I know, But the way I cope with it is that I have and I don't usually say this in front of the others, an amazing support system. People who guide me when I feel lost, people who pick me up when I fall down. Y/n, you're my best friend, I want to help..."

You couldn't help but feel tears brim as you hugged Jason tightly, the one person out of the entire bat family gets you. He really does, He doesn't hesitate to wrap his arms around you, keeping you safe and secure.

"I'm always here for you y/n, always"

This meant more than you could ever feel. To have someone who could pick you up when you fall down, to guide you into the light when things get tough. It will continue to get tough, But you always had your best friend to back you up.

A/N: okay so sorry it's taken me like three weeks to write this, and I've changed it to a span of 2 months from the first chapter to the end.

“I’m irrevocably in love with you.”

They were together again, Batgirl and Robin

It was October 31st, Halloween.

Jason was the Arkham Knight and was creating havoc across Gotham. He was relentless and only wanted to kill Bruce. She tried to calm him down and have him forgive Bruce, but there was no use.

Every chance Jason had, he tormented Bruce about his beloved daughter.

“Did you like the little home video I sent you Dark Knight?

“Your little girl is perfect for me… she's very obedient.”

“You know? She didn’t fight me… She begged for me.”

“To think, for you to adopt a little girl, and for her to love you and call you her father… then when she meets me, she forgets all about you…”

“It appears we have something in common, it's a sweet little name your daughter calls us.”

When Jason kidnapped Oracle he made sure to keep her away from his prize possession. He couldn’t risk her leaving him and his whole plan failing. He knew Barbara would tell her what he's been causing throughout Gotham.

Dick was trying to find them, while Bruce had him distracted. He had to help rescue both Batgirls from Arkham Knight. It was torturous enough seeing the video of his baby sister being violated by Arkham Knight, but not knowing what he was doing… killed him.

Bruce was going after Arkham Knight to rescue Commissioner Gordon. Then the Knight ambushed Bruce in the tunnels with his excavator. Thinking he finally had him ambushed, Bruce escaped and took down the Knights' militia. He walked towards Jim Gordon to untie him.

“Get me out of here Batman, we need to get to Scarecrow.”

Finally being able to rescue Commissioner Gordon, Bruce was interrupted.

“Turn Around.” Bruce heard the distorted voice.

He was standing in front of the Arkham Knight, who was pointing a gun at him.

“Who are you?”

“You really have no idea?” The Knight went up to hit the button on the back of his helmet. “Do you Bruce?”

“Jason? But... You're dead.”

“What's the matter? Lost for words? I expected more... I'm hurt."

Meanwhile, at Jason’s Safehouse

The little canary was watching all of Jason’s destruction. Several militia watch towers, drones, and tanks all scattered all over Gotham. She hardly recognized Jason. He was a completely different person...

She saw a distant figure jumping from the rooftops and looking around. She stared at him for a while, and all of a sudden a bunch of militiamen were after him. He managed to defeat all of them, and once he brought out his weapons she realized who it was. She went to go put on some of Jason’s clothes he left for her. Then when she was fully dressed, then grabbed her grapple gun. She went to go open the locked door. When Jason wasn't looking— she looked at him typing in the codes. She typed in the code and the door opened, she hoped that Jason wouldn't find out...

She found multiple militia guards protecting the safe house, and she took them out, silently. Once she found herself free, she made her way to the rooftop. She looked around for the person, trying to find them.

Then all of a sudden she feels two hands around her, pulling her into them.

“There you are pretty bird.” He spun her around to look at him, “Dickwad...” she giggled.

“What did that awful psycho do to you?” He sounded so upset.

“Dick... It's Jason.” She said to him, looking up at him. “Jason didn't die.”

“What do you mean? Bruce said he saw him die.” Dick sounded concerned.

“Joker had him wear body armor, it stopped the bullet. He paid Slade to get him off the island.” She explained. “He’s been planning this for years."

“Why? After what Bruce did for him? Why is he hellbent on destroying Gotham?” He spat.

“He was manipulated into believing that Bruce abandoned him and that he just replaced him with Tim right after. He even thought I forgot about him, he thought his girlfriend didn't love him anymore.” she started crying, it hurt her to see Jason had turned into such a relentless killer…

Dick wiped the tears that were running down her face, he then put his finger under her chin to lift her head and kissed her forehead.

“When did you two… become a thing?” He questioned, trying to distract her from what was happening. “I just turned 14, and Jason was 15. It was when he started going to the troubled teen's school— I stalked him.” She realizes how insane that last part makes her sound. “Once I found out that Jason was… cute, I ended up sneaking out a lot just to see him.” she grinned. “You stalked a street thug?” He was pissed, “He killed his parents and you thought he was cute?” and now he was furious. “Jay didn’t kill his parents— okay, he got them killed. But Cathy and Willis abused him and tried to sell him— Maroni killed them.” she corrected herself.

“He loaded the gun and he had someone else kill them.” She knew Dick was right, it was his right as her older brother.

“Jason still was a good person, he was misguided by rage. He still wants to serve justice, has just been guided by rage and he can’t see clearly.” she was perplexed. She loved Jason and she knew that inside he was still a good person—

however, reconsidering his behavior, she had no clue if he was beyond saving.

“I still love him, I never stopped loving him,”

she sighed. “Bruce didn't show him that he loved him. Jason thought Bruce was going to love him as his son, and then he felt like just his assistant. Even if Jason didn’t get captured by Joker, he still would have resented Bruce,” she spat. “Pretty bird…” Dick whispered. He ran his finger down her face and pulled her in. “I’m gonna keep you safe—away from Jason.” He confidently told. She pulled away from him, “I don’t want to stay away from him! I want to help him, I want to be with him forever! He saved me, he made me feel cared for! I’ve felt numb for the entire time that he was gone. Dad stopped giving me attention, you went off to Blüdhaven, and my boyfriend was being tortured and presumed dead! I could have brought him home if I thought I could take on Joker, or at least stalled enough till Bruce was there!” she screamed. “Jason is the only one that has ever truly loved me...” she sobbed.

“I'm sorry...” he sighed with sorrow

My Idea for a Nightwing series

In this universe there were 2 Robins active at the same time, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, 18 and 16 respectively, they had been fighting together for three years now, they were inseparable, but the “Death in the family” storyline happens, Jason finds out the Joker kidnapped his mom, and here he tell Dick about it, he warns him that it might be a trap, but Jason doesn’t listen, Dick has a chance to stop him before he sneaks out but he decides not to. after this the whole thing happens and Jason “dies”.

Batman and him are at the sentencing of the Joker after he captures him (As Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson), after the court declares him mentally unstable, the Joker is sent to Arkham, all while he’s grinning at Bruce and Dick. The Joker once again is sentenced to Arkham. Dick is mad at the ruling so he plans to sneak into Arkham to kill the Joker, Bruce finds out about this and goes to stop him, Dick, as Robin still, gets into the Joker’s cell and starts choking him with his staff, his eyes filled with rage and tears, Batman comes in and gets Robin off the Joker, they start having a heated discussion, like the one Bruce and Red Hood had in Under the Red Hood, all while the Joker taunts Dick, he has enough of this and goes for a killing blow, but then Batman acts desperately and shoots a kind of taser gun at Robin (let’s say it’s a powered up version) leaving Robin unconscious and with a huge scar on his chest (in the shape of a bird *wink*), they go back to the Batcave and there when Dick wakes up he starts fighting with Bruce again, the argument ends and he finally decides to leave Gotham and go to Bludhaven with the excuse of going to college. This is the first episode, after that we get a 2 year time skip for the next episode, now Dick is studying Law and also being a vigilante, but now since he has beef with Batman he changes his name and costume to that of Nightwing (think the New 52), one night after he’s patrolling the city he sees a man punching a woman, after he chases the man down he offers her help, she’s Raven, or in this case Rachel Roth, when she was a child she was left in a convent where the nuns mistreated her after they saw what she (uncontrollably) did, the whole sorcery thing, after 12 she ran away and had been living in the streets anyway she could, Dick felt sorry for her and took her somewhere safe.

After that they got to talking and she mentions the whole thing above, and then she starts insinuating onto him, he clearly doesn’t like it and tells her so, Dick finally noticed how she had been living, and after looking into her eyes and seeing Jason for a second, remembering the moment him and Batman caught him stealing a wheel from the Batmobile, he decided to take off his mask, tell her that she doesn’t have to do that and that she can come live with him, he’s gonna take care of Raven like Batman took care of Jason. They get to his apartment, and after settling in, Dick sets her up so she can have a normal life from now on, he enrolls her with a private tutor so she can have the education she didn’t have, all while he goes to college still. Raven learns surprisingly fast and she’s going to take some tests at the end of the year to see if she can get her high school diploma. They have a pretty normal life together, she’s like a little sister to Dick, but everything starts going wrong when one night someone breaks into their apartment, they try to kidnap Raven, she once again awakens her powers and ends up scaring the guys away, but the left some clues, it’s Professor Pyg. His modus operandi reminds Dick of the Joker, very flashy, and wants everyone to know who he is. So basically most of the first season is about the Professor pyg case, the relationship between Raven and Nightwing and how Dick must learn to deal with his trauma.

With a few characters and plot lines sprinkled in so we can get a season 2, maybe show some of the members of the teen titans before they form ( I would want the team to be more similar to young justice in the sense of members).

On another note though, what made you ship the two of them? I've seen other shipping them but most of the time it's kyle being a meek and supportive boyfriend while nursing Jason's angst. So your dynamic is endlessly enthralling to me and I'd love to know more!

STAR WARS

This is not like set in stone and it's all surface lever. I just wanted to draw Jason and Kyle in Star Wars and came up with something along the way. Most about Kyle's and Jason's story in the AU mostly follows the same story beats as their canon but like in Star Wars universe. Jason’s story is more fitting with the Arkham version of him.

So Kyle is a padawan under Alan's or Ganthet's teachings. Him and the other lanterns are friends, Hal more in a big brother role for Kyle. Hal mostly operates jedi fighters. And then something like Hal’s home planet is destroyed and he goes berserk from grief and falls to the dark side. Kyle and the others go after Hal and fight and Kyle find himself being kidnapped by Hal and there’s a big fight where Kyle finds out that Hal has bled his kyber crystal and they fight more and Kyle tries to persuade Hal into coming back with him and either he does or don’t (i don’t really know).

After that Kyle purifies his bled kyber crystal and BEHOLD Kyle with a white lightsaber!!!

Gotham is a major city/planet and like earths Gotham it is also filled with crime. Bruce like in canon mostly operates there and is force-sensitive but cut himself form the force a long time ago. Now he trains his children in non-force fighting styles. But he still has his old lightsaber.

Jason is also a force-sensitive and trained under Bruce. He always wanted to do jedi training but bc Bruce’s own trauma he didn’t let non of his children train under them. Then he found out that Jason’s real biological mother was once a jedi and so he went after her in hopes of her training him. He took Bruce’s old lightsaber too. But he was presumably killed even though Bruce didn’t find his body.

Jason was not killed but rather taken by the joker. Tortured and made to hate Bruce. Once he escaped he was up for revenge and trained under many dark side users and bled Bruce’s kyber crystal (again but i like bled kyber crystals fight me)

Then in Arkham Knight style, Jason overtook Gotham and got Bruce into a vulnerable state. They fought head on and Jason got the upper hand and once Bruce was almost definite Jason threw his blasters off and took Bruce’s old lightsaber and told him that this was the weapon that he will use to kill him.

But the Lanterns were there too. They stopped Jason and defeated him. Then something happens that leads to Kyle starting to jedi train Jason. (Jason still has a huge aversion to being anywhere near Bruce so they take off to somewhere i don’t really know lol)

And they do stuff, learn about each other and kiss.

What made me ship jaykyle? I barely remember how I got into it. I have a shitty ass memory and I wipe my brain clean like every other month. But I read the Countdown and just stumbled onto it. It stuck with me and now we are here. But I absolutely love their dynamic. The raw energy they have. And yea the phenomena of Kyle just being a support bf for Jason is pretty big and at the beginning I too leaned on that quite a bit and I think that it mostly stems from ppl not knowing that much about Kyle or reading his run. Batfam community is so much bigger than the lantern one it is an easy pit to fall into.

“JASON STOP!!!!!”, your voice echoed in the silent warehouse.

Jason stopped in his tracks as soon as he heard your voice, his mind was brimming with thoughts, questions and worst of all, emotions.

“Well, well, well, look who crawled out of her little cave”, He said smugly as he finally turned around to face you. The voice was his, you’d recognize that voice anywhere but it felt cold, devoid of emotions, hearing him like that sent a shiver up your spine. You could feel your determination slipping.

Even though you had your cowl on, Jason could still see how much his rampage was hurting you but he couldn’t stop now, not when all he had left to do was to capture Joker, beat the living shit out of that asshole and show Bruce how much of a failure Batman’s moral compass really is.

“Well? Got nothing to say now?... Why am I not surprised?”, Jason scoffed.

You took a deep breath, you were breaking down inside but you sure as hell weren’t going to let that stop you. You spoke, voice barely above a whisper,  “Jason...Jay...Stop all this...Please, come home, come back to the--”

“Manor? Home? Did you hit your head (Y/N)? Why in the hell would I ever go back to a place where NOBODY GAVE A DAMN ABOUT ME, WHERE HE REPLACED ME AS IF I MEANT NOTHING?!”, Jason didn’t want to lose control of himself, not in front of you. So with visible effort he calmed himself down, took a step forward and gave you a deadpan look.

“You all left me”

Your blood boiled at that statement.

“How dare you?! We lost you! We mourned for you! I mourned for you!”

Tears welled up in your eyes, listening to him you wondered whether he truly believed the words actually coming out of his own mouth.

“The Jason I knew was a roughed up street boy who still cared when many didn't, who called Bruce out every step of the way, who had this ridiculous favoritism for bread, who had the guts to take out a tire from the fricking Batmobile”, despite the dreadful situation you smiled remembering those sweet memories.

You looked him in the eye, pleading in a way, and you spoke softly, “The Jason I knew was The Robin to my Batgirl. This-this is just not who you are Jay, not really...So can you just stop?”

He looked unfazed by your words and cocked his head to the side.

“Princess, the only way you can stop me is if you fight me, knock me down real hard, make sure that I won't get back up again. Tell me Batgirl, can you do it? Do you actually have what it takes?”, he waited for an answer he knew wasn’t coming. As expected, all he was met with was silence.

Long, Painful Silence.

With that Jason knew what he had to do, he put on his red helmet and swung out of the nearest window, you couldn't stop him, for all your big talk, you just couldn't. He was right you failed him.

You jumped awake with a start, bolting upright and immediately regretting your subconscious decision, the throbbing pain made you clutch the back of your head with your palm and you closed your eyes again to achieve some semblance of reality as a way of grounding yourself.

‘It was just a dream (Y/N)…just...a...dream’

You tried to lie to yourself knowing deep down that it was a memory, something you have already lived through, something you regret everyday. You swallowed the lump in your throat. It felt dry and your whole body was sore. You really should've called in early and then maybe Dick would've been the one stuck in this crapy situation and not you.

Pushing past your perplexed state you got up and took in your surroundings, there were vines hanging from the open roof, a LOT of flowers and some Venus flytraps by the corner. It wouldn’t even take being a detective to figure out where you were; The Botanical Gardens.

“How the hell did I end up here”, you muttered under your breath. This was getting out of hands.

“See Pammy I told ya Girl-Bat would rise and shine by now”

“I can see that Harls”

‘Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn, just great, is nobody in Arkham these days’

The duo descended down from the open roof through one of the vines and stood in front of you. Harley looked as happy as a 10 year old about to get their favorite toy and Ivy seemed to be interested in anything and everything that did not concern you. Classic.

“Why the hell did you both kidnap me?”

You jumped forward and grabbed Harley by the collar of her dress, in retrospect it wasn't the best move but it's not like you were thinking straight at the time anyway.

A vine wrapped itself around your waist and you were tugged back by such force that you were sure there was gonna be a big bruise there tomorrow. You skidded across the floor and finally stopped when your back connected with a bench. You were just too drained to fight back so instead you just crawled up and sat on the bench with a grunt.

‘Not fighting my way out of this one so for once let’s try talking’

“Whoa, should ya really be this obnoxious when ya got a concussion?”, Harley burst your thought bubble as she looked you over.

“Wait, Did you just call me obnoxious?!”

“But don'tcha worry I am a doctor and I got a PhD”

“In psychology!”

“I will fix ya in no time”

“Are you even listening to me?”

Just like that you saw Harley leave the room to go get some medical supplies, or well at least you thought that that's what she was going to do, you turned your face towards Ivy hoping that she can fill in the blanks.

“So you both finally done babbling? And here I thought it was never going to end.”, She looked at you from where she was petting her plant, and made her way over to you, something about her seemed genuine. You got the feeling that whatever she had to say, it won't be a lie.

“Try and not mind what Harley does, she's just happy to make new friends for girls night.” She sighed before continuing, “As for your question, last night we were near the Gotham Central Park when we saw a masked man dragging your unconscious body out of a building and into a van parked in the alley, so we kil-- we took care of him and brought you here”, She shrugged as if that explains why the Poison Ivy just saved your life.

"Wait that means Red isn't here", you whispered more to yourself than to others.

“Pam is Red!”, Harley said cheerfully as she came back out nowhere with a bunch of boxes which would've made you very uneasy if your mind wasn't already preoccupied.

“What Harley means to say is that if you are trying to ask about that gun loving leather jacket vigilante who wears a red helmet, then no we don't know where he is”

Her words sunk in and yesterday's memories flashed in your mind, your eyes widened under your mask as the realization hit you like a bus.

The missing people, the creepy mannequins, the medical journals regarding surgeries, the weirdo in the white mask instead of a face, the poster of some Pretty Dolls parlor; Now it all makes sense!

“Pyg!”

"Huh?", the women in front of you almost jumped at your sudden revelation.

“Lazlo Valentin aka Professor Pyg that's the son of a bitch who is behind all this mess, he's the one who has got Red Hood And it's all my fault! Now, He might be dead already! I should've known, I-I should've figured it out quicker, I should've done something, DAMN IT!!”, you buried you face in your hands due to the building frustration within you.

“Don't be like that”, you heard Harley's voice as a hand was placed on your shoulder, she sat down on the bench next to you, you turned your head and eyed her warily, seeing nothing but concern.

“Don't give up. Clearly this Hoodie person means a lot to ya so you get off your ass and go get him, don't you Bat People always find a way”, you looked at her for a moment, then jumped up on your feet.

“Can't believe I am saying this but you are right Harley, I need go and I will find a way to save him, but before leaving I wanna know something”, you looked Ivy in the eyes as you worded your next sentence, “Why save me?”

“It was just my way of replaying you for saving Harls from that clown once”, instead of elaborating Ivy just crossed her hands over her chest waiting for you to leave. You gave her a warm smile, something they are not used to seeing, from a bat of all people.

“Thank you Pamela”

With that you were out of that detour and onto finding the path leading up to Jason.

Somehow you reached the safe house without running into some kind of trouble, with how your day has been going, you were completely expecting something else to go wrong. Thankfully it didn't. You took out a spare comms unit, keys for your bike and some aspirin to dull the headache.

Soon you were whizzing past vehicles at full speed triying to contact anyone available at the moment.

“Come on pick up, pick up, pick up! What's the meaning of giving us an emergency button when no one picks the damn thing up”, you spoke into a dead line, wishing you could just bang your head against a wall, on second thought not a good idea.

Two minutes later the call was finally picked up and a screen appeared on the dash of your bike, it was from the batcave and you could see Dick, Damian and Bruce in sitting in front of the computer, Tim was connected from what you assumed to be the titans tower. However Dick was the first one to pop the question.

“(Y/N) what's the emergency? Are you okay? We haven't heard from you since last night”

“Look no time to explain. Jason's been taken by Pyg and I need you guys to give me a location. Now”, you said gritting your teeth as you narrowly missed a truck for the second time this evening.

“Todd's captured? *tt* his incompetence precedes that of Drake”, Damian's snarky remark made Tim snap his head up.

“Hey!”

“Boys”, Bruce's stern voice made them quiet enough for the time being, “Batgirl you are injured and your emotions can compromise the whole rescue, go back to the safe house and let us handle this”, Bruce ended the transmission and it made you angry.

'He said that they are going to handle it, that means they know where he is, so now all I have to do is to get Dick to spill it out'

You dialed Dick back, hoping he would understand what you are trying to do.

“I know why you specifically choose to call me back and No I am not letting you go head first into danger without any of us with you especially when you are compromised”, Dick's tone was stern but laced with concern.

“Dick the last time Bruce said he will handle it, Jason died, look I know what he is trying to say, I get him, I can't blame him for wanting to look after me but you have to understand I have to be the one to get him back”

“Why?!”

“Because I can't lose him again! The last thing that I said to him was that I might never forgive him! Never forgive him for something that's not even his fault! You are my only hope at getting him back, please don't take that away from me, please”, you pleaded with him as you slowed down the bike to a stop.

The line was silent for a while, the thought about saying more to him crossed your mind; what you are feeling about Jason, how much he matters to you, how you've failed him more than once, but ultimately decided against it and instead you just waited for his reply.

You deflated as soon as you realized that the line was cut but the ping of a notification caught your attention; The map to the possible location of Jason.

“Dick Grayson, you big softie”, you smirked, your bike roared as you made your way on to the free way heading fast towards the Gotham outskirts.

Meanwhile at Professor Pyg's 'supervillain headquarters' :

Jason slowly woke up, assessing the situation he quickly came to the conclusion that he messed up and now he is tied up to what seems like dentist's chair.

“Great, there has got to be a new record I've set in this family for messing up and getting kidnapped”, Jason muttered under his breath, he tried to tug at his restraints to get free but it turned out to be fruitless. A blinding light was switch on above him and he grunted due to the intensity.

“Man, what is up with you people and light?! Turn it off already!”, Jason said as he tried to adjust his eyes accordingly, when he came to, he was met with his captor himself.

Jason just stared at the man in front, moving towards him, wearing a pig mask and holding a butcher knife. He has seen enough crazy but this guy might just rival the Joker himself.

“Pyg know you broken. Pyg make you perfect”

Titans 3.04

just under the wire! ... i hope.

like with the previous review, i’m typing this up as i see the episode. here we go!

spoilers ahead.

1. ... well. that was an interesting cold open.

1.25. i don’t know whether to admire this show’s restraint when it comes to gotham and its excesses, particularly arkham asylum. it’d be easy to go hammer and tongs, like suicide squad (2016) did, or any number of bat media did, at a tropey, colourful~~insanity~~ that can be quite damaging, casting mental illness in strangeness and criminality. it definitely shows gotham as... separate from the rest of the country, its own ecosystem of heroes and villains, a sort of rogue state. 

but that ecosystem is still human, with its heroes needing to clip parts of themselves away just to survive, growing old and needing to be recycled, its villains languishing in the same kinds of systems that fail everybody else who needs to be helped. it’s a quieter, tenser sort of wrongness: not strange enough that you can dissociate, but not close enough that you can completely empathise. gotham is its own creature.

1.5. i know that the reasoning behind this is more doylist than anything, but i’m so glad that joker was killed off with little fanfare right at the start of the season. he is the one man in the batverse that’s transcended its confines as this sort of ethereal boogeyman/eternal edgelord and to justify his presence in the series would mean giving him this tired, overblown importance and too much of a stab at colourful, tropey “madness” in this otherwise-subdued series. i wish all batmedia would follow suit and get rid of this fucker.

1.75. so jason is bucking scarecrow’s control! or reminding him of who exactly holds all the cards right now. circling back to what i talked about in the last review, it’s remarkable just how little time it’s been since jason’s “death” and he’s already got ‘minions’ and elaborately set up plans to track, break and kill the titans. just how long has he been planning this? when did he first look at WE weapons prototypes and think that’s something i can use to blow somebody up? and the most unsettling question: did he plan his own death at the hands of the joker just so that he could break batman?

at this point it’s obvious that the scarecrow at least started jason down this path, but it’s frightening just how far he’s travelled already.

1.8. aaagh, less than one minute in! i’ll shut up. 

2. conner washing his hands at the sink reminds me that he was directly in the line of explosion when hank got blown up and he’s probably got atomised hank-bits all over his skin that he’s desperately trying to wash off.

2.25. conner, don’t you speak to gar fucking logan like that, sir, no!

2.3. if anything it’s the lex part of him that gave him the knowhow to recognise the weapon and build a de-activator for it. 

anyway, for that ‘half-breed’ and ‘talking tiger’ comment?

(i wish, tho, that we actually see conner more interested in the superman part of his legacy, like maybe listening to stories from gar, or even better, dick, so we get a better idea of the pressure he’s feeling to live up to that part of him and not the part that’s lex.)

((i talked about conner’s stages of moral development in his introductory episode last season, but i wonder if the next stage of his self-actualisation would be to further integrate the parts of himself and realise that they are only parts and he, conner, is an entirely different person unto himself that can make decisions on how to use what he has and what he knows. his superman abilities can be used to destroy. his lex knowledge can be used to save.))

3. oh dawn :((

3.25. is this the last we see of dawn and hank? i mean, we know donna is coming back; would it be a stretch to think they’ll try to have a go at resurrecting hank as well?

3.5. “deathstroke didn’t make us into killers.” good, because deathstroke didn’t make jason a killer either. there’s a missing step there you need to be looking for, dick. 

3.75. dick did try to break the cycle, step away from gotham, run from the possibility that he could turn into batman. it didn’t help; he couldn’t fully withdraw from his vigilante persona the same time he loathed it, and batman literally haunted him both asleep and awake. but maybe gotham doesn’t have to turn anybody into anything. maybe gotham has nothing to do with it at all. it’s about taking responsibility, realising some sacrifices are pure bullshit, and building an actual family instead of merely a team.

anyway: hugs!

(oh, also? mr “i hate flying”? i mean, there’s perfectly valid reasons to hate flying that’s not related to childhood trauma, but then again, this guy was literally a ‘flying grayson’ once. also also, remember that he also gets sea-sick. must’ve a lot of fun stories to tell.)

4. ooh that gar/kory confrontation was brief but cool!

listen, i have never seen a psychiatrist with that extravagant an office and SIR I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW--

4.5. kory’s so unused to reaching out for help and it’s breaking my heart that HPG likely is some kind of impostor that’s maybe causing her symptoms in the first place. 

kory and dick have mostly been apart this season but it’s remarkable how their journeys have paralleled each other; kory processes her grief, isolation and existential dread into a determination to take care of this new family she has, no matter what it takes; dick does much the same, forging ahead with plans and solutions until he has no fuel left in him and spirals into a massive breakdown.

4.25. listen titans this really is a TERRIBLE continuity error. we aren’t goldfish; we can clearly remember that two minutes ago it was gar’s upper arm that was burned, not his forearm. COME ON.

anyway, gar is the BEST

4.5. i wonder where these visions of experimentation took place. was it on tamaran, or on earth, after she came to hunt down rachel/trigon and before she lost all her memories? is HPG a part of the scientist group that experimented on her? ... god, i hope not. i mean, i think he is, but it would be cool to have some positive therapist representation in media. 

5. you’d think the van transporting a dangerous supervillain that only batman could catch would be more secure but... i’m also not entirely surprised. 

5.15. i love dick gives ZERO shits about hiding himself or even ensuring scarecrow is adequately contained. just turns away after kidnapping him in BROAD DAYLIGHT and says ‘let’s go’. I LOVE THIS DUMBASS

6. lmao gar is having a really really shitty day SOMEONE GIVE THIS MAN A BREAK or just a goddamn story arc of his own

6.5. i’m really confused about the timeline here. so... sometime ago, kory came down to earth to hunt down trigon, yeah? at some further point down the line she and her sister were kidnapped and experimented on. THEN she somehow escapes but... loses her memory? a few months pass and then we see blackfire alive and well and free; she kills faddei, can impersonate other people, and is clearly seeking out kory. but now she’s still in the experiment facility...? what’s going on?

i’m not entirely surprised about the facility being mostly deserted. either the biggest investors in this project gave up on it and it was left to the most fanatic to carry on, or they were deliberately trying to lure kory and get her to free blackfire--expand the environs of the experiment, so to speak.

7. hopefully barbara is going to get something to do other than listen to various men give her Attitude

8. how do you terrorise a terrorist? well:

8.25. ooooh, the attack on crane at arkham a ploy to get crane to blackgate? nice one dick, i didn’t even think of that. but why though? to protect crane from the titans? to intercept the van to blackgate and “rescue” him? seems likely--red hood was there, except dick got to crane quicker.

9. still reeeallly unclear about the komand’r situation. was komand’r captured after s2? is this all A TRAP?? if so, why are you stepping into the only thing that can contain you, kory????

9.25. so... definite parallels between dick/jason and kory/kom here. i’m just. i’m still. really confused. i’ll shut up now.

10. this may be my favourite dick look yet:

10.5. i unironically love how titans has made this bizarrely-devoted-to-his-moniker, toxin-spewing supervillain into a tamer version of hannibal, psychoanalysing his victims into submission. it’s of a piece with how inward looking titans is, the way all of its villains are obsessed with how our protagonists’ minds work, to the point where they would actually spend time inside of them. 

there are no big plots to end the world. no apocalypses or endgames here. these villains collect the titans’ insecurities like infinity stones. the way the titans defeat them is by achieving character growth--literally winning by the power of love. literally “the real superpower is the friends we made along the way”!

10.7. anyway, i’m betting dick is used to this bullshit from crane and is humouring him in the service of getting more information. the story about the wolf? an implicit threat, not to mention dick getting to control what crane knows about him and what methods he would use to manipulate him.

am i giving dick too much credit here? i don’t think so. he’s really impressed me so far this season.

10.75. like. there’s a real unreliable narrator vibe coming off with every person that talks about bruce (much like how the various members of the titans talked about jason’s motivations) and to buy into crane’s talk about bruce being a psychopath is to fall for the same manipulation that jason fell for. dick is the only person who hasn’t really psychoanalysed bruce this season, and i think some part of his detective brain is piecing things together into a bigger picture.

11. i’m glad kory rescued kom but did she have to kill the scientist?

(i mean, yeah, probably - the less people know that kom escaped the less likely they’re going to have the fucking govt on their doorstep, but still.)

11.5. dick’s gonna come back to wayne manor, stare straight at komand’r and go, well which room would you like? because the team might as well adopt ANOTHER person, yeah?

12. oh MAN that red hood/nightwing fight was AMAZING! and he did the thing! the boomerang escrima thing! i’m so delighted!

12.5. the anger and disbelief in dick’s voice when he says you told crane EVERYTHING?! tells me that he knew exactly what he was telling crane himself.

12.75. “everything you are is because of him” - oh that reminds me of halluci!bruce from last season. i hope we see halluci!bruce again--he is so vicious but so entertaining... so much more effective at tearing dick down than crane or jason combined. goes to show that dick’s biggest enemy is own fucking head.

12.8. oh no! dick’s shot! crane is in the wind with red hood! blackfire is now with the titans! i love it!

honestly this season’s pacing is such a big step up from the last couple. gold star, show.

WARNING: if you don’t like Dad/Joker don’t read.

So Harley was out one night and came across a little girl, Marinette. Her parents were killed in a mugging and she was left behind, so Harley takes Mari with her and adopts her. When Harley returns to Joker’s hideout she tells them they have a baby.

Joker honestly doesn’t care until he sees what she looks like. Then he starts laughing because she looks like one of the Wayne’s kids. Joker tries to teach her how to be evil, but Mari refuses.

Marinette likes to take apart Joker’s gadgets, that are filled with laughing gas, and replace them with either water or old perfume. She takes everything that the Joker teaches her and makes it into a safe and really funny comedy bit. She likes to sometimes put on a show for her Papa and Mama. Joker laughs at her shows, even when he doesn’t think she is funny.

It’s a few years later and Joker decided it was “take your kid to work day”. He takes Mari with him to terrorize Gotham. When the Batfam show up Joker shoves Mari in Batman’s face.

“Looky here Batsy. I got one to.”

Marinette, being the adorable sweetheart she is, says “Hello Mr. Bat. Would you like to smell my flower?”

The Joker looks sadly disappointed at Mari and says “Maribear, that’s not part of the script that we rehearsed.”

“But papa, I don’t wanna be mean. I just want him to smell my flower.” She tells him sadly.

The Batfam are confused, panicked, and other emotions.

“Maribear, I’m the Clown Prince it Crime. That makes you the Clown Princess of Crime got it.”

“But I wanna be a designer papa. I even have some ideas for you.”

“WHAT?! Do you think that there’s something wrong with how I look!?”

“Papa, you’ve had this look since forever. Plus I think the Riddler wears the same shade of green as you.”

“NO WAY AM I SHARING COLORS WITH THAT TWO BIT WANNABE FUNNY MAN! Let’s go Maribear we have fabric to shop for. This will have to wait batsy, I have pressing matters to deal with.”

Joker picks Marinette up and walks away. The Batfam are now thoroughly puzzled and extremely concerned. Half of the team follow the Joker and the other half goes to look for Harley.

Marinette refuses to use stolen fabrics so the Joker either pays for them or the clerks just give them away out of fear. Marinette also gets some sketch pads and colored pencils.

Back at the hideout: Harley is cooking a meal for her family when some of the bats burst thru a window. “WHEN THE F*CK WERE YOU PREGNANT?!”

She tells them that she was never pregnant and that she adopted Mari after her parents were killed in a mugging.

When Joker, Mari, and the rest of the bats return; Mari takes her stuff and neatly puts it away. She then comes out and starts designing clothes for her papa. (For a little kid she is really good, she is making detailed notes off to the side).

Batman watches Marinette intensely. Before Harley gets in between him and her daughter. “Back off Batsy! She’s our baby!”

Batman: *thinks* not for long

Harley explains to him how she found Mari.

Marinette and Damian are a few years apart.

As Marinette grows up the Batfam keep an eye on her. (To see if she will turn evil or crazy) but despite Jokers efforts she is a law abiding citizen. She is a freaking saint. She makes treats and leaves them for the vigilantes, she volunteers at animal shelters, she goes to orphanages and makes clothes for them and the street kids (she doesn’t give the kids the reject clothes. She will remake an outfit over and over until it meets her standards. She puts everything into making sturdy, durable, and warm clothes for these kids), makes treats for the Arkham inmates.

When Damian comes to live with Bruce, he goes to the same school as Marinette. They become friends, then they fall in love, then they start dating, then Damian finds out she is the Joker’s daughter. That shocks him, and he starts pulling away from her. This goes on for about a year.

This can go two ways:

The Joker is pissed that his daughter got her heart broken and kidnaps Damian. He threatens him and is basically about to kill Damian. When Marinette suddenly breaks down the door and tells the Joker that “getting my heart broken is apart of growing up. This needs to happen for me to grow and learn what I want in a relationship. You can’t kill every person who hurts me, papa. This will happen again and again. I will break other people’s hearts but no one will kill me for it.” The Joker lets Damian go and now Marinette’s relationship with him is rocky.

Before Damian can figure out how he feels about Marinette. . . . She is kidnapped and sold to a crooked orphanage in France. Marinette gets amnesia and doesn’t remember her past before the orphanage. She is then adopted to Tom and Sabine. Meanwhile Gotham is in hell. The Joker and Harley are furiously looking for their daughter. The Batfam are trying to stop them but it was no use. They finally found the kidnappers, but they cover the kid’s heads and make them wear the same clothes. They don’t know where they sent her. Gotham morns the loss of their sunshine. Joker and Harley separate, Harley and Ivy get together. Marinette still becomes ladybug, Lila is tormenting her. Marinette sends an essay entry in for a contest held by Wayne Enterprise. Bruce looks over her application and recognizes her. While in Gotham, Bustier leaves Marinette behind. She is found by Ivy and Harley. Harley breaks down and holds Marinette close. Harley is crying tears of joy, but Marinette doesn’t remember her. Harley and Ivy take her back to her hotel. Then Harley storms off to look for a cure to amnesia, while Ivy looks for Batman. Damian sees Mari when she and her class are touring his school but he doesn’t recognize her until he hears her name. He then goes and holds her face, just gazing into her eyes and he cries. His classmates are shocked that the ICE PRINCE IS SHOWING EMOTION. Mari gives him an “I know you, but I don’t know you” look. This breaks Damian’s heart. Gordon, Harley, and Batman pull several strings to get Joker out of Arkham and they escort him to the airport, telling him that Mari will probably not remember him due to her amnesia, before the class leaves to go back to Paris. They make it. Damian shouts her name and Marinette turns to see everyone who she loves standing their. (This is the order I see them standing in) Gordon, Harley, Joker, Batman, Ivy, Dick, Jason, Tim, Alfred, and Damian. She looks at them and remembers! She remembers everything. She runs to Harley and Joker and cries in their arms, crying about how she was sorry she forgot about them. She hugs everyone and by the time they calm down they realize something. HER CLASS LEFT HER BEHIND! Gordon rushes up to the radio station and demands to talk to the pilot going to France. It’s too late for the plane to turn around, so Gordon tells the pilot that the class left a student behind and once they land in France they must go straight to the police and tell them of the negligence of Bustier. By the time Marinette returns to Paris the school is already under investigation.

((Okay so additional thoughts on Titans so far this season. Clearly one of the mysteries they are trying to solve is what the hell made Jason like this. What resurrected (or was he even dead at all) and more importantly what that drug he took was.

I know after the first few episodes everyone has a massive hate boner for Jason (thanks Greg Berlanti, we get it you despise Jason for whatever reason). However, let’s be rational here. Dick has been investigating the drug Jay took. I have a feeling this will come into play.

So let’s make this clear, as much as I would love to see good old R’as al Ghul in Titans (preferably played by a Middle eastern older gentleman), we probably won’t see him. One, he has already appeared in Arroweverse and Gotham outside of the movies. Two, there is a new Batman Trilogy starting so I think R’as might be off limits to TV and Streaming services for the time being sadly.

So who does that leave us to have seemingly resurrected Jason? The one person Dick is foolishly trusting. The one who seems to know way too much about the situation, as if he planned this or knew who did. The one person Dick is visiting in Arkham Asylum for consultation on Red Hood and his moves.

That’s right, Professor Johnathan Crane. Aka, The Scare Crow.

My current theory is this, though Red Hood is the big bad and orchestrating all the events that will test the Titans, Scare Crow is the puppet master that created Red Hood.

The drug dealer that supposedly sold Jason the drugs admitted he had no clue who was sending them to him. In Arkham we suspiciously see Scare Crow asking for ingredients to drugs, and with how corrupt Arkham always has been he has easy access to his fear gas.

Jason inserted said drug that looked suspiciously like Scare Crow’s fear gas into him before his confrontation with the Joker. Though he was beaten badly with a crow bar, which in the comics did not kill him, he was not blown up. Therefore it is possible Jason never died. The drug he took just might have made him appear dead.

Why does this matter?

Because there is no way that thug who stole Jason’s “corpse” (or in this theory kidnapped Jason) was working for R’as al Ghul. He is just your average cut of the mill Gotham Thug as we saw in Episode 2.

So who was he working for? One of Batman’s most cunning and dangerous enemies, The Scare Crow.

Whatever that drug is I currently believe they might be finding a way to keep Jason on. Now understand I am not saying Jason is not a villain right now, he is much like when he returned in the comics. But I do believe he is having help in the term of his villainous ways. Such as keeping him hooked on a drug that causes so much fear one becomes numb too it.

There aren’t just two big bads this season, there are three. And one seems to be a classic Batman villain.

Now of course I could always be proved wrong later on down the line. Scare Crow could have nothing to do with this. Or he could be working with R’as like in Batman Begins but I seriously doubt the latter. Besides, I feel there isn’t enough time to do a plot twist like that justice as the Redhood arch is only taking up 8 episodes and a plot twist like that would require an additional number of episodes as to not detract from the originally planned big bad of the season Black Fire.

Now this analysis for now will leave out any speculation as to what is going on with Kori as we have too little of the puzzle there for me to start forming solid ideas on. All I can say is look forward to another analysis post for that in the future with hopefully a theory before they flat out reveal it.

Disclaimer: This analysis leaves out Hank’s death as a factor because I am unsure if that was always the plan or only something they did because the actor for Hank landed a lead roll in a different show which means he will have a very demanding schedule for the time being. One can hope Dawn starts to develop outside of him but that remains to be seen for as the season progresses.))

“In breaking news, we’ve received reports of an explosion somewhere north of the city.” “We’re still waiting for the police to confirm if there are any victims.” “This story is evolving rapidly, please bear with us.” “We hear this really loud, ‘boom’... there was smoke everywhere.” “Emergency services have confirmed that they have discovered a body buried in the wreckage. This game is kicking it off with a “BANG” worthy of the Joker’s attention. Bruce flipping “Batman” Wayne is allegedly killed in some kind of explosion and it’s up to our rag tag team of “Gotham Knights” to keep Gotham safe.

Yes, I said “allegedly”. This may be jumping the gun a little and nothing in the trailer hints at it, but I do believe that Batman is still alive. I think he thought he was going to die, but ended up getting kidnapped by the Court for some kind of plan-- but I’m getting ahead of myself.

Breaking it Down

Here’s what we know about the story so far from the trailer and game play demo:

Bruce is “dead” (Nothing short of a body, tested and proved to not be a clone, duplicate, or just a decoy will convince me otherwise), as the result of some kind of explosion that literally rocked the city.

He’s left Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood, and Robin the Belfry as a place of operations

He has also asked them to protect Gotham for him

For some reason, Bruce was alone when he died. It is unclear if he was in his “Batman” get up at the time of his death, or if he was “Brucie”.

Jim Gordon is dead and has been for some time. The result of his death is the GCPD doesn’t trust the Bats anymore.

Alfred is alive (Thank Gotham for that) and helping the Batfam

Mr. Freeze is involved in the game as a villain, most likely not the main villain but part of the main campaign. His plan involves freezing Gotham for reasons unknown.

The Court of Owls is the main bads of the game and may or may not have killed/kidnapped Bruce.

A few random minor points (with pictures!): 

Jason has most likely been killed by the Joker and brought back with the Lazarus pit (as seen from the white in his hair and where that scar on his face most likely came from). 

Barbara has most likely been shot and paralyzed by the Joker, but has since recovered as seen by the wheelchair in the foreground of the Clock Tower. 

“Robin” is most likely Timothy Drake due to the science stuff surrounding him in his hideout/Titan room(?), the fact that he HACKED THE WATCHTOWER, and the cup of coffee on his desk (Honestly, the last point is the one that backs this claim up the most).

Story may or may not play out differently depending on which Batfamily member you are playing as (Robin is not seen in any of the cut scenes with Batgirl during the game demo. This could be something they are adding in/was not ready for the demo, but I highly doubt it)

Speculations/Spit-balling Some Stuff

Bruce may have blown up the cave with him in it based on his comment about “this message was sent out when I destroyed the cave and it’s contents”. This is unclear as we do not know what blew up only knowing it was north of the city. Why he would do such a thing is beyond me, but these are the people who did Arkham Knight so who knows.

This may be some kind of “Found Family” story with the four batkids coming together with Alfred to bring justice for their Batdad. If so, I am all for it and am crossing all my fingers and toes.

I am severely concerned that the Court of Owls not only “killed” Bruce but is also responsible for Jim Gordon’s death. And for good reason because HAS ANYONE ELSE NOTICED THE FLIPPING OWL ON JIM’S BADGE? NO? JUST ME? OKAY! (I’ll build on this in a separate post)

Other villains who may show up/I hope show up include but are not limited too: Deathstroke, a very SHORT cameo of sort from the Joker (hopefully in a flashback that helps build a character. eg. Jason or Barbra), Penguin, Ras Al Gaul (mostly because I want confirmation for a Damian Wayne DLC-- I want to see all my Bat Boys, dang it), Catwoman (as some kind of mentor character for one of the batkids, maybe?), Blockbuster, Black Mask, Dick’s evil Talon Grandfather, random members of the Court, you get the idea. Give us some of the more obscure villains mixed in with a FEW popular ones if you have too.

Calling it: Freeze’s plan is either based on a hopeful attempt to save with wife (the Court has that creepy reanimation of the Talons so maybe there’s some kind of cure he can make out of it???), or they are going to completely forget about his wife and just make him the villain for the sake of it. Please be the first thing.

At some point in the game there shall be a moment where Jason is question/confronted/kicks himself out because of the whole “gun” thing. Heck, it may start that way with Jason having to prove to his siblings that he can be trusted.

I’m hoping each character gets their own separate development/different story line and that we actually get them going through the separate stages of grief. Heck, each kid could be stuck on a specific stage (Tim on denial, Jason on anger, Dick on grief, Barbra on acceptance because she’s gone through this before very recently) Give us emotional batfamily, you cowards.

Building on that, I am hoping for separate campaigns/story lines for specific characters, which can serve as side missions or go to the main story, depending on the mission. (eg. Dick vs Blockbuster could be an optional side mission. Dick vs evil Talon grandfather would be essential to the main story)

Part of me wants Barbra and Dick to be “dating” or have had a past relationship. The other part of me just wants them to be friends/siblings so we’ll just have to see how the characters interact.

Give me an Alfred who kicks butt with his shotgun when the Talon’s invade the Belfry (“when”, NOT “if”)

If the Talon’s have Bruce, then I want an evil Batman vs the Batkids. And I don’t mean for one fight, I want him showing up half-way through the game and the kids have to fight to get him back. Give me a brainwashed Bruce that’s only snapped out of it because of his kids!

I want to see Tim transition from Robin to Red Robin or “Drake” if you have too.

A fight for the cowl between the kids before someone (most likely Alfred) steps in and tells them to be themselves, it’s what Bruce would have wanted.

Timothy Drake vs Ras Al Gaul

Jason Todd vs Black Mask

Barbra Gordon vs whoever killed Jim Gordon/is responsible for his death

Dick Grayson vs Deathstroke

Justice League references (mention Superman, Wonder Woman, the Green Lanterns, etc)

Please make this story stretch over MULTIPLE NIGHTS. Preferably longer than one month but I’ll take a week-- heck, I’ll take three days if you can’t make it longer. Change up the character for ever “night”, change the mission types (stealth, fight, info gathering, etc), do SOMETHING.

If DLC is a thing, I want to see Bruce Wayne “Batman” , Damian Wayne “Robin”, Duke Thomas “The Signal”, and either Stephanie Drake “Spoiler” or Cassandra Cain as “Black Bat” or “Orphan”. And add some story for all of them, pretty please?

Also: THEY CHANGED THE COURT NURSERY RHYME AND I HATE IT.
