https://www.tumblr.com/wisteriagoesvroom/765425050649231362/what-happened-between-carlos-and-oscar-in-the-gap
Can you list the clues we have? 🕵️‍♀️
I am not sure I know what all happened but I’m ready to put my RPF brain into it
i don't have many clues, but here are some thoughts if we wish to put the capital F in rpF:
🇸🇬 singapore
iirc, oscar was the one who roared past carlos in quali and carlos somehow put it in the barrier during q3 in singapore (oscar was the "another car"):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
from
so in singapore, oscar qualified p5, and carlos in p10.
Tumblr media
oscar ends the race p3 / podium, and carlos in p7
Tumblr media
cue 3 week break, then, cut to:
🇺🇸 austin
oscar has a lacklustre sprint quali (he qualified so bad i had to zoom so far out to get the screenshot, rip). carlos starts austin sprint in p5, oscar p16.
Tumblr media
oscar ends up fighting his way in this sprint to p10, vs carlos's p2 finish.
oscar drives relatively hard in the austin sprint, incurring a 5 second penalty for pushing gasly off in the process, and manages to hold yuki behind him. i say relatively 'cus he's still pretty clean, but he was scrappy here.
Tumblr media
THEN, carlos defended oscar, fully on the record, in the face of the FIA penalty. which he thought was "harsh" on oscar...
much to consider...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
from
later. carlos starts p3. oscar is side by side on the starting grid in p5.
Tumblr media
carlos finishes p2 there, oscar p5. fairly uneventful race for oscar. not the case for carlos, where iirc ferrari allowed the two red cars to fight.
Tumblr media
results from
then...
🇲🇽 mexico city
and BOOM for some reason by mexico city practice they are beefing again. but wait! what's been happening in the background?
my rpf mind says oscar is grumpy because he was denied the additional mclaren upgrades, where the team has prioritised lando. add in: helmut marko dragging oscar's name into the media discourse to mess with zak (who is busy defending lando's position as Prized Top Boy because helmut decided to play mind games with all of them as part of the driver and constructors' championship fight. max haunts the narrative).
Tumblr media
from
meanwhile!! carlos is coming to the end of his ferrari run, the end of one of his childhood dreams. (launching his own karting business this year was another one - side note, interesting shift in PR strategy.)
anyway, he didn't win austin like he probably wanted. but, he's kind of doing excellent in mexico. i am not as familiar with ferrari's overall dynamics tbh, but it seems like he and charles were also openly at odds with each other over strategy again at some point in austin (??):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
screenshot. + austin writeup from.
so BACK TO MEXICO CITY! where we are now. i think oscar thought carlos was in the way in fp3? which resulted in this lil throwaway snipey comment from oscar:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
from
maybe it's a one-sided beef from oscar @ carlos atp. but one thing about carlos is he will NAWT back down when someone bares his teeth at him.
therefore. carcar is like. so fully back y'all.
and as a footnote. or maybe not a footnote actually. it's just. kind of. very funny. when carlos has ended up on pole / p1 in mexico city quali. meanwhile oscar is p17 behind...a sauber.
like. i love that australian twink, but this is kinda hilarious ngl. piastri + americas = no bueno.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
make what you will of these. my third eye is OPEN 👁️👄👁️

now that the season is over here are chuang2021 moments i cannot believe are real, a list that only gets longer and in no particular order:
- that entire bit of them choosing their dorm rooms, including but not limited to:
lin mo copping his double room only to lose it + his mental breakdown after that
almost 20 of them fighting to have hiroto stay in their room
nine and patrick's 'we break up' (only for patrick to move in after 1st round of eliminations)
ak: ‘does rikimaru snore?’ santa: ‘yeah, very loudly’ ak: ‘oh NOOOO i’m scREWED’
- hanfu shop owner liu yu
- han meijuan training base:
yu gengyin’s ‘i am a proud fishie swimming into your heart’
also yu gengyin: ‘i’m a little scared that the debut lineup will end up being 11 han meijuans’
zhang xinyao dropping it low. that’s it.
han peiquan: ‘look at that santa, he can dance so well but can he do this? he can play the drums but ask him to come here, can he do it? no way’
the entire “just go where you want” performance including their intro + mentors comments + xie xingyang’s slogans
but even more so “just go where you want” 2.0 LIVE AT THE FINALS
- the mentors dancing along to ‘vote for me xoxo’ during “just go where you want” 2.0 before carrying and promptly drOPPING zhou shen onto the floor before the rest of them pretend like nothing happened in time for the ending pose
- “when i’m with you”, “unbreakable love”, “just go where you want” > the actual theme song all day every day
- don't be shy @/tencent , give me all the clips of gan wangxing singing jing long's “lost you” (diu le ni) + more of the both of them dancing to crab dance backstage
- zhou shen, to shao mingming on the verge of having a meltdown over mean comments about him as practice for “i don’t care” stage: ‘do you want to hear the next comment?’ shao mingming, as the others start laughing: ‘plEASE NO’ zhou shen, reading the comment anyway: ‘he only knows how to cry’ cue maniac laughter from all of them
- just hanjiang, really
zhang xinyao, on “feng ding” stage: ‘it was so good. also i wanna add hanjiang you look like huluwa’
to wu yuheng after “i don’t care” team’s performance: ‘there’s only one word to describe you - handsome. first time i saw you i went, woah, handsome. saw you on stage performing - woah, handsome. seriously, handsome’
xue bayi, backstage: ‘i think he’s said that to me too’
when called up at 2nd eliminations: ‘what’s manga-like man?’ another trainee: ‘ means you look like you came out of a manga’ zhou zhennan: ‘yeah it’s like fei yang yang came out of the page into real life’
domineering ceo with all of them either screaming or looking mildly uncomfortable
literally scREAMING to get people to join “zui kuen” team
more importantly hanjiang’s dad imitating him scream to get people to join “zui kuen” team to a dAMN T
- patrick: ‘hello everyone i am your ocean prince patrick!’ wu hai: ‘and i am the ocean’ [for non-chinese speaking fans of chuang, the hai 海 in wu hai means ocean] + the continuation of this on wu hai’s dorm diary
- “unbreakable love” 2.0 !!!! put it on spotify right now !!!!!
- da-geTM bo yuan
fu sichao, on bo yuan getting 9th for 2nd eliminations: ‘that feeling when your own old man (laughs for a bit) when your old man gets a really good grade, it’s indescribable happiness’
amu: ‘bo yuan’s like my grandpa, and he might as well be’
eisho’s ‘bo yuan gege’
hiroto getting other trainees to call him da-ge on dorm diary but having bo yuan as his da-ge
or alternatively, yuan-shu [uncle yuan], as seen after using the term fanersai(凡尔赛)[literally means versailles, a slang that means the same thing as flexing / humblebragging in english]
- gan wangxing unintentional comedian
han peiquan, on his first impressions of gan wangxing: ‘he’s such so good-looking, and then he opens his mouth (disbelievingly rolls his eyes) i almost died right there’
on being 11th for 2nd eliminations: ‘in the past, my life plan was that after graduating from university, i’d find a stable job and live a nine-to-five life. and i used to fantasize that in my future i’d be able to find a wife early, drive a car to bring her travelling, we can listen to some music and lift our heads to see the stars’
other trainees: laughing and going ‘oOHHHH’, notably including xie xingyang: ‘he’s still fantasizing!’
also other trainees, after seeing the video his family sent to cheer him on: ‘where’s the wife? where’s the wife!’
also ‘hello, look at me’ coming up everytime he shows up
case in point - the mentors erupting into laughter when gan wangxing steps forward to do his evaluation, notably zhou zhennan: ‘kill me with it!’ [i’m not sure how to translate what he actually said in a better way than that], nene following up by simply going ‘hello’, zhou zhennan immediately picking it up while still laughing: ‘look at me’
holding the umbrella for nene at the end of “it’s raining and i’m thinking of you” stage just for all the trainees backstage to go ‘why’s it you!’
Very Passionately telling gong jun what jing long taught him on singing
- ‘andy lau has come to visit our zoo!’
- wu yuheng’s quest for chilli sauce in his dorm diary:
wu yuheng and fu sichao terrorising a staff member for chilli sauce until the staff goes to wu yuheng ‘if you wake him (fu sichao) up every morning i’ll make sure you get your chilli sauce’ to which fu sichao says to wu yuheng ‘you know what chilli sauce isn’t that great let’s go’
wu yuheng straight up drinking zhou keyu’s chilli sauce because i could never
- liu yu confessing to lin mo as a dare from shao mingming but lin mo’s in the toilet so liu yu has to awkwardly do it standing outside the cubicle door while shao mingming and xue bayi eat the drama up
- oscar’s reaction to people finding out his real name + the entire ‘xiong xiong’ saga
- lelush with a pearl earring
- rikimaru moments that deserve a segment of their own
having the first comment on his first solo performance be ‘drop your skincare routine’ [essentially] because the mentors didn’t have anything to critique on his performance
at the start of his speech at 3rd eliminations, when it was clearly evening: ‘good morning’
getting very sad over the fact that yumeri didn't send him a video to cheer him on + being jealous every time someone's sister showing up in the videos
- speaking of sisters, the guys simping over amu's sisters + amu, asking the mentors when trainees had the chance to dedicate a few words to each other during the final livestream: 'can my sisters come next year?'
- santa, on preparation for nana party stage: ‘she (mao xiaotong) learnt the choreography really fast, and even if she made mistakes she’ll be like *makes cute expressions* so even when she did i’d be like “it’s ok! no problem!” she’s so cute’ the staff interviewing him: ‘is this the santa we know?’
- “the adventure” team making fun of their female guest before finding out said female guest was meng meiqi aka goddess incarnate AND had been watching them make fun of her through the cameras
- lin mo’s bat song
- xie xingyang discreetly stealing food from the staff on their movie night that was originally supposed to only be for those who used their beans before a whole group of them [led by jing long, consisting of xie xingyang, wei ziyue, hu yetao and others] just go and outright take it with nine hugging the staff member to let them take the food that entire bts video is a mess and you know what? that’s what i’m here for
- zhou zhennan’s constant ‘wtf’ face
- that chuang x GQ beach video
- gong jun’s entire time on chuang, but especially the moments with zhou shen. felt like a fever dream tbh

Ok friends, let us get down to business. Like I said, I got about fifteen requests for me to talk about my emotional range. So let’s do that.
To start out, I’m just going to say that there’s a quote unquote, “normal emotion range” just to demonstrate how I differ from whatever goes on with neurotypicals.
So! Looking at the stereotype of a narcissist, we gain the knowledge that if this is true, I am essentially a robot who only gains joy from crushing souls. Thaaaat is not right. Let’s break it down.
So, first things first, I like many other narcissists, am an actor. Like the amount of oscars I should have for what I pull off is in the high thousands. But unrecognized talents aside, most of the time I’m acting instead of genuinely feeling something. If you tell me something that makes you happy I can recongnize the social cues enough for me to go, oh this is a good thing, and then I can mimic the happiness. The same thing goes for other emotions. If I read the social cues that I forced myself to memorize, I can recognize when I should display a certain emotion.
I don’t have whatever triggers emotions like others. It does have to do with empathy. I’m missing the link that allows me to truly feel sadness or happiness over something that doesn’t impact me directly. Instead, in therapy I’ve worked on memorizing social cues such as body language, voice tone, ect. It wasn’t that hard for me, as I’m highly analytical and I’ve been reading people for years. But now, instead of seeking out weakness, I try to actively pay attention to everything, so that in the moment I can give the appearance of responding correctly in the moment.
A lot of what I display to the world is acting. Lots of false confidence, I learned how to give off the feels I want. I literally practiced the perfect condescending look and tone of voice. The only thing I can’t do is fake cry on demand. Which is cool because I hate crying in front of people.
Continuing on, despite acting a lot, I do still feel my own genuine range of emotions. I can feel genuine sadness or anger, mainly and myself but tbh I’m always annoyed to a degree XD.
I feel love, or at least a variant of it. I certainly love my cat. I believe I love my partner. I at least feel a sense of acquaintance with my system mates. I feel happiness, like I’ll find memes funny and laugh at them, but really for me to get a genuine emotional response, it has to impact me directly.
Additionally I have intense mood swings. This could be more bpd than npd, but you all asked for my experience so here you go. Sometimes I can spiral so far out of control that if my body was moving at that speed, I’d be a blur. I’m exceedingly sensitive at these points, and will easily get hurt/angry/freaked out to the extreme. It’s what my host calls a narcissistic overdrive, (not a real term, just me losing it) where I try to compensate for the emotions by acting even bitchier, but all that happens is me coming off as a maniac.
On the opposite side of that are the days where I just go numb. I don’t feel anything, and have the emotional span of a rock. I do get a little annoyed sometimes when people say that they’re dead inside as a joke, because actually being that numb is scary. Anything could happen. My cat or partner could die and I wouldn’t feel a thing until I slid back into feeling shit.
The final aspect of me is what I called getting my wires crossed at some point, and the name stuck. So this is when I totally miss the mark. Like sometimes I laugh at really bad times. Either a, I did find whatever suffering is going on funny, or b, I fucked up my reactions. It depends. And both lead to awkward oh fuck moments XD.
I didn’t include some more narcissistic stuff in this, like why I find some suffering funny, or how I actively search out arguments, because I feel like those are slightly different from emotions and this post is already long.
That’s all for me. I can clear fifteen asks out of my inbox!!!!

Can't wait for The King. On cue, Charmies have restarted their anti Lily campaign. They must be realllly nervous that something is happening between them. What'll they say when he doesn't stop seeing her after The King is out? They actually think he needs a "beard"? Dude is red hot with 4 films under his belt this year. Do they really believe those directors were concerned about whether he was straight before they considered casting him? Delusional!! LMAO
It is funny to watch the comments already starting about all of this, anon, when we really don’t know anything- if they are still dating, what their interactions will be during promo, what any of it will actually mean. It’s down to them already saying their interactions on film will either be ‘real’ if we see them as anyway awkward during their scenes, or ‘fake’ if they seem too passionate. Covering all bases in order to fit their unwavering belief that the relationship is nothing but PR. Sorry, but you can’t have it both ways.
I laugh every time I read someone say it’s all PR, tbh. Are we even following the same person?? He signed on for Dune, the most-anticipated, upcoming sci-fi film of 2020 on the heels of being nominated for an Oscar for playing Elio- our bisexual king- while on a pr promo tour that blurred the lines between him and his character left and right. If anyone ever needed a beard, it would have been Tim at that time. But for most in that fandom, his relationship has to be fake in order to keep the ship afloat.

Quick(ish) list of things I loved about Timeless 2x03
The time team stealing their 40s clothes
Every minute of Rufus as Langston Hughs - “I won an Oscar.” “No he didn’t.” “Well I was ROBBED.”
Wyatt: “Logan and Preston.”
Wyatt: “We need new clothes.” *flips open a pocket knife* Me: “Didn’t expect that to be a turn on but okay.”
Lucy and Rufus low-key crushing on badass Hedy Lamarr - honestly, same.
Rufus trying to pass the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air rap as poetry (I mean it is, but still. Hilarious.)
The Rittenhouse agent giving himself away by pitching Jurassic Park
Lucy’s nervous laughter before she sings - What an adorable babe
The prolonged eye contact between Lucy and Wyatt while she sings - tbh I think that’s the moment he knows for sure he’s going to open up to her.
Time Team Mom Denise Christopher and Sassy Aunt Mason
“You too love birds make yourself at home.” - *cue nervous Lyatt laughter*
Lucy flirtatiously explaining history to Wyatt
“I just mean you’re not hideous.” “Oh thanks keep it coming.” “Come on, you know you’re beautiful.” - wYATT OMG
“I skipped my prom to attend a debate tournament - I REGRET NOTHING.” - Lucy Preston, nerd extrodonaire
Wyatt admitting he was in a rough place in highschool
“You saved my life you know.” - I heavily suspected he didn’t mean that physically when I saw it in a promo but WOW this killed me.
“I stopped caring.” “When I thought you were dead, I felt the same way.” LUCY WAS RECKLESS BECAUSE SHE COULDN’T DEAL AFTER LOSING WYATT
LYATT MAKING OUT KNOWING FULL WELL THEY’RE GOING TO END UP IN BED TOGETHER
Morning after Lyatt are so soft and intimate. She can’t stop touching him.
“Well we don’t have to announce it to everyone, it can just be our little secret until we’re ready -” *CUE RUFUS*
“Busted.” “Nah, he’ll be cool.” - Rufus “no chill” Carlin? Okay guys sure.
Rufus geeking out over the fact that Wyatt and Lucy slept together and admitting he is absolutely going to tell Jiya
The “Is this happening” parallel with Riya
Lucy and Wyatt flirting in the car - Dammit, Rufus you can’t just immediately go back to clockblocking
*soft* happy Lyatt in the bunker right before everything goes to hell

janbeans replied to your post: janbeans replied to your photo: Book Discussion Challe...
I tried reading Hamlet before, it was a miss for me. Maybe I would try Romeo and Juliet. Can you recommend some Shakespeare or any classic stories in general that I could read?
oh boy here we go
first of all, out of the Shakespeare plays I have now read (I have not yet read many of the works which are considered Shakespeare’s best!!!), I’d rec these (purely based on my own enjoyment lmao):
A Midsummer Night’s Dream (you’d already read this one)
Love’s Labour’s Lost
A comedy about four guys who vow to fast, avoid women and sex, and sleep as little as possible so they can study and become intelligent/renowned. Cue the arrival of a French princess with her three lady attendants.
“Wise fools”, a witty pair of lovers, poking fun at artifice and pretense, sexual jokes -- this play’s got it all.
Romeo and Juliet
This is the play I finished most recently. I know there’s a lot of debate about a lot of things, especially about how young the main characters are and how quickly they fall in love and blah blah blah, but I loved it. Yes, they fall in love immediately (”love at first sonnet”) but it’s so. beautifully. written. Like, I’m the first in line to complain about instalove but. The point is, if it’s well-written and there are symbolical meanings and shit, I don’t see a problem. (And it’s not like the play itself glorifies what happens to R&J??? Like, none of it tries to say, “look at this, how great, this is what love’s supposed to be like, killing yourself over someone!!” Like there’s a bigger plot and point re: feuding btw the families and pride and how it’s all so irrational and ridiculous and pointless and R&J’s tragic deaths are what finally(!!!) seem to get through to the parents (maybe??? do the parents really understand what’s what in the end??))
There’s some really elaborate and deliberate use of language throughout the play and the theme of opposites (light/dark, bawdiness/love, young/old) is pretty cool. My favourite thing is probably how the play is structured as a comedy (with lots and lots of foreboding remarks) that turns to tragedy halfway through (Marjorie Garber calls it “a comedy gone wrong, a comedy turned inside out” in her book Shakespeare After All).
Henry VI tetralogy (1 Henry VI, 2 Henry VI, 3 Henry VI, Richard III)
History plays! I’ve gathered not a lot of people care for these that much(?) but I really liked reading them, especially 3 Henry VI and Richard III, mostly because there are some really interesting female characters in these (Margaret, Joan of Arc, Elizabeth, Lady Anne).
Basically, these are dramatic retellings of the Wars of the Roses; there’s lots of corruption and infighting at court and civil war.
The Two Gentlemen of Verona
For some reason I have a soft spot for this very early (and slightly weak) romantic comedy. Maybe because it’s filled with tropes that Shakespeare would refine in his later plays, so it’s just fun to read it and see how it anticipates his later works idk.
Anyway, The Two Gents is about two guys who fall in love with ppl and shit happens; there are love triangles, cross-dressing, horrible dominating fathers, horrible men in general, elopement plots, friends made rivals in love, clownish servants, and A DOG.
And now, to some non-Shakespearean classics I’d like to rec (fair warning: I haven’t really read all that many, especially recently TT____TT also, the total lack of female writers on this admittedly short list is very distressing to me!! pls someone rec me some classics written by women!!):
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
Art for art’s sake, the most important thing is The Aesthetic™.
Dorian Gray is a philosophical meditation and a Victorian thriller about an exceptionally handsome man whose portrait starts to age while the man himself stays young and good-looking.
The Iliad by Homer
I don’t even know how to sell this tbh. Just, there are heroes and heroines, gods and goddesses, and war, and the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus pretty much made me cry.
I read a beautiful, lyrical Finnish translation of this last year -- it was superb!!! and I can only thank Otto Manninen (the translator) for making that experience possible for me! (the descriptions of achilles’s grief killed me)
Les Misérables by Victor Hugo
I’ve been planning a reread of this ever since I first read it in like two years ago. I read it super quickly so I don’t have much to say except I loved it and that it’s so much more than most film/theatre adaptations lead you to believe (so many side plots and side characters and side stories and shit that just don’t fit into a couple of hours).
I seem to really gravitate towards super long books with a million different characters... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Täällä Pohjantähden alla 1-3 (Under the North Star 1-3) by Väinö Linna
Probably interesting to us Finns only, idk, thought I’d rec it anyway.
This trilogy is a sprawling family saga about the Koskela family (and some of the other inhabitants of the Finnish small town in which they live) from the 1880s to the 1950s. It explores the major historical events and social changes during that time in Finland (e.g. language strife, nationalism, socialism, WWI, Finland’s independence, civil war, WWII, etc.) through the perspectives of ordinary people.
I cried buckets. My favourite part was the second book (”The Uprising”), which centres around the civil war between the Whites and the Reds bc I’m very very very interested in that part of Finnish history (and it was also probably the saddest book and I apparently live for tragedy and death who knew???).

Fans Give Their Hot Takes On The Anime Awards
More important than the Oscars, the Grammys, and the Havelock, North Carolina Chili Cookoff combined is the Anime Awards. It's that wonderful time when we can look over the past year of anime and bestow honors upon the ones that most touched our hearts. And with them looming ever closer, we asked some of y'all to give us your hot takes on who YOU think should take the trophy in some of the categories. And you didn't disappoint. Your answers ranged from surprising to thoughtful to inspired, so we decided to collect the twelve best of them and post them here for the rest of the internet to love and appreciate and then, as the internet does, nitpick into oblivion.
I'm gonna go down category by category, and what better category to start with than the big one: Best Anime.
  BEST ANIME
"Yorimoi for AOTY" by Cameron (A Place Farther Than The Universe)
A Place Further Than The Universe was the best anime of the year. It was the best anime by far and no other show came even close. There were plenty of other shows I loved this year like Laid-back Camp and Revue Starlight but none of those shows compare to the good good Antarctica girls. The show teaches amazing lessons and made me cry many times. The email scene at the end of episode 12 made me cry for hours and I still tear up every time I think about it. It's just genuinely one of the best shows I've ever seen. This is my new go-to recommendation for people who want to get into anime. Their adventure is so inspiring and it deserves anime of the year.
"Devilman: Crybaby" by Manic Stylo (Devilman Crybaby)
It's been almost universally accepted by both formalist and populist anime fans that Devilman Crybaby has the qualities of an instant classic. From its unique visual direction, infectious soundtrack, and unrelenting use of adult content, Devilman Crybaby breathes new life into Go Nagai's classic manga and beautifully streamlines it for a contemporary audience. Remaining mostly faithful to its source material, director Masaaki Yuasa's sensibility for abstract and avant-garde visuals makes for a delightfully nightmarish fever-dream adaptation of Nagai's original concept (it's a match made in heaven...or hell in this case). As far as adult anime go, Crybaby is consistently balanced fare with uncompromisingly violent action for anyone who just wants a fun romp, solid thematic undertones for those who want more bite out of their shows, and tastefully implemented real-world commentary if you want more than just escapism. A hyper-stylized modern gothic masterpiece, whether it worked for you or not, Devilman Crybaby will not leave your subconscious any time soon.
"Zombies But Still Alive" by Jouii-chan (ZOMBIE LAND SAGA)
2018 has been quite the year for anime. It's my first year that I've been watching and keeping up with seasonal anime with Crunchyroll! But one show stood out to me, and that show was Zombie Land Saga. For the first few episodes, I was pretty doubtful about the series. I mean, an idol anime with zombie girls? That was just plain crazy!
But as the show went on, I realized Zombie Land Saga was more than some silly comedy show. It was beauty. All the characters had great chemistry, and the music was great. It got me addicted to it with it's great music too. The best part of the show was how it showed the indomitable human spirit and how even through the toughest of storms, anyone can prevail. Sakura provided a great lead with her past sucking her of all her confidence, yet she overcomes this to lead Franchouchou to a great future. Zombie Land Saga was one of the surprises of 2018, and I was always hyped to watch the new episodes when they came out.
"Violet Evergarden: An Anime for a Lifetime" by James (Violet Evergarden)
Violet Evergarden is an anime that grabs your heart. The loss of a father, mother, daughter, son- the fears of rejection, regret, and failure- Violet Evergarden reaches inside you, and pulls tight on these strings. It's not just a post-war story; Violet Evergarden is a somber filled tale that elicits a strong sense of empathy from the audience. Beautifully rendered and well-paced, the story features a subtle escalation in heart ache and healing. Each episode takes the time to fully immerse the audience in a complex micro-story filled with very human lives. This anime understands the importance of a well developed character, and spends it's time wisely weaving this incredibly vibrant, living world. Story aside, the animation and artwork are absolutely stunning. When paired, the audio and visual cues truly bring the world of Violet Evergarden to life. From start to finish, there is no other animation that delivers a more compelling sense of catharsis and satisfaction, and that is why I believe Violet Evergarden deserves to be Anime of the Year.
    Best Boy
"I Would Lay Down My Life For Toono Hiyori" by Nija (Free! -Dive to the Future-)
200 words definitely aren't enough to properly convey my intense love and appreciation for my everything, the light of my life, the absolute blessing that is Toono Hiyori from Free! but I'M STILL GONNA TRY because he deserves everything. Starting out as a fun antagonist, turning into a slightly confusing antagonist, and then ep. 6 hits you with that ABSOLUTE GUT-PUNCH and I weep for him always. He did some things wrong (though I understand why he did them and wouldn't say I necessarily disagree tbh) but in the end he's just a lonely boy giving everything for the person he cares about the most without ever asking anything in return. Less important but still Important things include: he's a jerk sometimes and I love it. His frenemyship with Asahi? The funniest thing. He can and will ruin your life with a smile, he loves reading and coffee and has a really good fashion sense, he's very organised and on top of things, even if he's a social mess lbr... And if he likes you, he'll probably kill for you. All in all he's just the best and you, person who's reading this entry, should know that too. Bless his soul.
"Katsuki Bakugo, A Living, Breathing Explosion" by Mimi Valentine (My Hero Academia)
Katsuki Bakugo is easily one of the most dynamic characters of the year. Starting with his complicated relationship with Izuku, his hidden jealousy for a boy with no quirk, to outright anger at him suddenly having a quirk, to the rejecting the trope of "rival becomes evil for greater power," to confessing his feelings of inferiority towards Izuku, and the intense self blame for what happened to All Might. Katsuki has always shown that he has this heart, from treating Uraraka as his equal in the torunament, to fully acknowledging Izuku's growth ans strength. Seeing his slow dismantle from just a typical bully to a hidden broken boy only to show you that under all that anger, he's truly just a boy who wants to be a hero.
"Why Rimuru Tempest is the bestest boy of not just this year, but of all time" by Kat (That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime)
There were a lot of good boys this year, but who was the goodest? The undoubtedly most delicious smudge-muffin in existence?
My answer is Rimuru Tempest and here's why:
He is the kindest ball of squidge you could ever meet. He would stop and help anyone in need at the drop of a hat. In his previous life he DIED saving his kohai from an attacker and he would do it again.
He is adorable. How could you take one look at his face (or lack there of) and not fall in love instantly with this soft boy? Not only is he soft in his ball form but once he grants the wish of a dear friend, he becomes the ultimate soft boy. One you could probably hug endlessly and both of you would still be comfortable.
He is the definition of epic. One of the first things he does with his new life is befriend and EAT a dragon. He ate him, whole. Then he proceeded to eat everything else in the cave. If you hurt one of friends he'll eat you too! Not before he beats you in a hilariously and awesomely one sided combat sequence though.
  BEST FIGHT SCENE
"SSSS. Gridman's True Final Battle" by Donovan Bertch (SSSS. Gridman)
The greatest part about SSSS.Gridman's final battle wasn't the sheer amount of quality animation and editing on display. It wasn't the satisfaction of seeing Gridman finally return to his original form, theme songs blaring, as he finally decked the villainous Alexis Kerib in his smug face. It wasn't even finding out what the hell SSSS actually meant in the end. All of those were wonderful moments that made the fight shine, to be sure. However, the greatest part was that when all was said and done, the fight wasn't Gridman vs. Alexis Kerib. It was the show's antagonist, Akane Shinjo, vs. Herself. Her sins, her insecurities, her self-hatred...it took a lot of effort, and it wasn't a total victory (given that Akane's final scene with Rikka shows her still processing her guilt), but few things are that simple. Even when the heroes came to encourage her, it was Akane who made the final choice that led to Kerib's downfall. Gridman may have landed the final strike and had the big speech about human potential, but Akane Shinjo defeated Alexis Kerib and saved her world. The action-packed duel was just icing on the cake.
  BEST VA PERFORMANCE (EN)
"My Hero Academia, Episode 61: Bakugo's Breakdown (Clifford Chapin)" by Masky (My Hero Academia)
In one of the most emotionally stirring episodes of the entire series, we finally see all of Bakugo's pent-up anger come to a boil in this what could be considered a huge turning point for his character development. As a character who is known for his angry outbursts, this episode let us have some insight into Bakugo's inferiority complex and really reminded us just how young and emotionally immature these upcoming heroes are, and yet how much responsibility is weighing on their shoulders. With such an important milestone for a character like Bakugo, the voice acting in this episode was critical. Clifford Chapin gave an extremely raw and powerful performance that truly echoed Bakugo's pain; a performance that exceeded expectations of even those who don't normally give dubs a try. It was real, emotionally-charged, and could be considered a landmark for just how far english dubs have come.
"Clifford Chapin (Katsuki Bakugo)" by Katherine (My Hero Academia)
My Hero Academia fans sure are spoiled with a fantastic same-day English simuldub in addition to everything we already love about the series! With great casting overall by ADR Director Colleen Clinkenbeard, Chapin's take on Bakugo is one of the highlights. He's consistently been such a natural fit for the role that I can't imagine anyone else voicing him, and always seems to give 110%. Season 3 has been no exception with some key moments to really shine, including a fan-favorite emotional confrontation. His vocal cords would probably disagree, but I'm definitely glad he's a part of one of my favorite anime from 2018.
  BEST OPENING SEQUENCE
"Fighting Gold - Jojo's Bizarre Adventure" by Loon (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind)
"Fighting Gold" is an intro I was honestly excited for long before it was even announce. I may be slightly biased as a manga fan and long time Jojo fan but in all honesty "Fighting Gold" is really a masterpiece in my opinion. It highlights the series so well with plenty of hidden spoilers as most Jojo intros have had before it telling the story perfectly if you break it down. It is an intro I will honestly never try to skip to get to the anime itself faster.
  BEST DIRECTOR
"Akira Amemiya - SSSS.Gridman" BY Katherine (SSSS. Gridman)
I would not be surprised to see SSSS.Gridman represented in quite a few categories this year, but its direction is where the show truly shines as one of the best of 2018. Akira Amemiya and Studio Trigger juxtapose the understated, day-to-day activities of our heroes with glorious, city-destroying kaiju battles without ever being jarring. However, that doesn't mean the former is only viewed though a mundane lens while the latter are just beautiful hype machines. Character moments have just as much flair as any fight with dynamic framing, art, and sound design, while tokusatsu battles are given so much attention to detail with how the kaiju move to pay homage to the live-action shows the team grew up with. Amemiya has a confident sense of visual language, and it shows every episode. SSSS.Gridman is subtle when it needs to be and bombastic when it wants to be, which is not an easy task to pull off.
---
And there you have it, the diverse tastes of anime fans and people that praise the holy name of Bakugo. But even if you didn't find your submission on here, thank you for taking part in this and double thank you for supporting Crunchyroll over the past year. We do our best to give you the greatest anime collection in the universe, so we appreciate y'all taking the time to give us your thoughts in return.
Remember, if you haven't voted in The Anime Awards, there's still time! And if you have, we look forward to sharing the winners with you on February 16th, when the Awards are streamed live on Twitch.

How They Made The Score To ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’
Written by Jerry L. Barrow Barry Jenkins isn’t stingy together with his reward, particularly on the subject of Nicholas Britell. The New York born composer who created the music for the emotive Finest Image Oscar winner, Moonlight, was placed on a Twitter pedestal by Jenkins when the trailer for his newest masterpiece, If Beale Street Could Discuss, was first launched. “That is all @NicholasBritell, the music in each the teaser and this new trailer are unique rating for the movie,” Jenkins Tweeted. “And TBH, it is simply the tip of the iceberg, Nick put his entire rattling leg on this, we would need to get his ass a brand new hip after this one, he DID that.” A research in contrasts, Nicholas Britell is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Harvard College who carried out in an instrumental hip-hop group on campus referred to as The Witness Safety Program and is a giant fan of the late DJ Screw. “I really like hip-hop man. I feel hip-hop is an important artwork type of the previous forty years. It’s one thing actually transcendent and world. It’s poetry and the sort of audio manufacturing utilizing no matter know-how is on the market. So in school I used to be obsessed and spent years making beats and tracks.” So it was no shock that once they first met, Barry requested Nick to ship a playlist of music he was listening to, and it contained a variety of every part from Mozart to UGK. “It reveals you the way the inventive course of can work from any start line,” he says of their pre-Moonlight courtship. “That’s truly the [same] Mozart piece that’s in Moonlight the place the youngsters are taking part in sports activities in chapter one of many movie. It was attention-grabbing as a result of it was from a few of these preliminary inspiration factors that he fell in love with that Mozart piece. Once I was first working with Barry on Moonlight it was fascinating to see the ways in which a few of our early concepts labored and likewise the way in which one thing won’t work. And Beale road was a continuation of that technique of working collectively.” If there was ever a movie the place the rating can be a essential complement to the phrases and visuals it could be the very first adaptation of a James Baldwin novel. If Beale Street Could Discuss is the story of younger lovers Tish and Fonny, performed by newcomer Kiki Lane and Stephan James, who’re making an attempt to nurture their love in a 1970s Harlem that’s each enchanting and threatening.  “The film is about love and injustice and there are distinct sound worlds that signify these issues within the movie,” Britell says capturing the essence of the movie in a phrase. “It’s been profoundly inspirational and I actually cherish these moments that I get to work with Barry. I study a lot about myself and we each get to go on this sort of journey collectively the place every movie is its personal distinctive universe and we’re making an attempt to determine what this could really feel like.” Listed here are 6 issues the Nicholas revealed concerning the creation of the attractive and haunting rating to If Beale Street Could Discuss. “Harlem Aria” (Bonus Monitor) On Beale Street, the very first thing Barry mentioned to me was that he was imagining brass. He was listening to horns. Initially we have been pondering mid 20th century NYC and Jazz. What’s the sound world for this movie? Within the case of Beale Street I truly wrote a bit of music the place I used to be experimenting with trumpets and frugal horns, and French horns and cornets and mixing the sounds in several methods. I wrote this piece and he actually favored it. After which after we put it up towards the image it felt prefer it was lacking one thing. It was lacking strings. The strings got here to signify the emotions of affection within the film. The stunning factor concerning the movie is it doesn’t simply discover romantic love, however explores the love between dad and mom and youngsters. It explores erotic love, it explores even a form of divine pure love. Barry and I labored carefully collectively on naming the tracks for the rating and we named lots of the cues after the Historical Greek phrases for the completely different form of love. The piece you hear within the trailer for the film, that performs in one of many early montages, the place Tish is speaking about when she first knew Fonny and the pure relationship they’d, that piece is named Agape, the greek phrase for that form of divine love. One of many key issues Barry mentioned to me about no matter piece opened the movie was “Pleasure.” He needed to really feel pleasure. There’s a motive we name it Eden and there’s a motive why that motif recurs [later in the film]. The world is each horrible and exquisite and also you see that in Beale Street. The approach Barry crafted this movie it’s this wealthy colourful and at occasions extremely stunning and loving world, after which it’s additionally this horrible, hellish place on the identical time. And every of these worlds is correct subsequent door to one another. And the sensation we needed on the opening was the great thing about these moments and the place pleasure does exist. The melody is at all times making an attempt to achieve upward. The darkish parallel to that [joy] is the soundscape of Officer Bell and when Daniel is first telling Fonny about his experiences in jail.  The music that you just hear in these elements of the movie is immediately derived from the music that’s joyful and loving in different elements of the movie, nevertheless it’s taking parts from these items and distorting and morphing them. Barry requested “How can we break this music?” And I feel you are feeling that. In that sequence with Daniel and Fonny they’re listening to Miles Davis. “Blue In Inexperienced” is taking part in on the document participant as this dialog is happening. And also you begin to really feel the this rumbling coming from beneath the floorboards. That rumbling is definitely a number of the cello from the piece that you just hear when Tish and Fonny are first making love. What was this joyful feeling, the world is now turning into one thing horrible. We’re actually taking parts from different items and harming them in a approach. I ran [the song] by a really, very lengthy story reverb. In order Miles Davis is happening it’s being run by, every notice is prolonged. Your sense of time and area is distorted a bit after which it’s simply quantity. The Miles comes out and in. We didn’t change the observe, it’s simply taking part in. Then the rumbling is available in. And the rumbling is musical. It’s not noise. It’s acquired this hypnotic repeating and also you discover it’s these overseas notes. The Significance of colours in ‘Beale Street’ Movie is an unbelievable artwork kind the place it combines so many issues into one place. You have got these wealthy costumes, you could have this attractive cinematography with wonderful colours and it does affect you. Precisely on the identical time I used to be making an attempt to discover my very own colours. The mixing of the brass with the strings, what does that do? It’s fascinating whenever you take devices and mix them, they’re sonic colours. Should you take a frugal horn and mix it with a trumpet and a French horn it’s this colour that doesn’t sound like the rest. And for those who mute the trumpet it’s immediately this different factor. There was a bit I used to be writing in brass and he’d say strive it in cello. What if I document this identical notice on cellos as a substitute of horns? And it completely transforms the piece. That’s what you hear on the tip montage earlier than the tip credit. Once I despatched that piece to Barry, he was moved by it as properly. It was colours that opened up the concepts. “Ye Who Enter Right here”  “Ye Who Enter” is among the final issues that I wrote. That piece was essentially the most difficult and likewise experimental within the film. [It continued] this concept about Hell and the thought of the underworld, the locations which you could enter to on earth, too. There are these locations which are horrible and take you out of your love. And so they’re not at all times journeys that you just need to go on. They’re pressured upon you. And whenever you see Fonny sculpting and the smoke is swirling it’s each a recollection and a dream scape, him reminiscing of his lifetime of pleasure and the place he needs to be, then he realizes at that second he doesn’t have that. So we wanted one thing that linked parts from every part within the film in a single place. What you’re truly listening to there’s a saxophone taking part in a really difficult improvisations primarily based on the “Eros” theme, nevertheless it’s utterly free jazz there, very exhausting into this virtually avant guard place with the sonics. It’s an excessive second. You’re additionally listening to parts from all the completely different scenes. On the very begin of “Ye Who Enters” you’re listening to the Cellos from “Eden,” very faintly and really ethereal. Then a number of the parts from “Eros” and “Mama Will get To Puerto Rico,” which is expounded to the household. You then’re listening to the theme from “Eden” and “Agape” after which these bells. One factor Barry talked about rather a lot was stepping into that standpoint of the characters.  You’re on this journey with them. What was Fonny feeling there? The music has to signify in some kind of approach what that psychological state is. So it is disconnected, it’s stunning, it’s torn aside, it’s making an attempt to be all of these issues.
