THEME: Maps, Traps & Treasure.

Hello friend, you seem to be in the market for a dungeon game. I have good news for you: there are many dungeon games!

For most OSR games, the book might come with some rules on how to make your own dungeon, rather than coming with pre-written maps. If you don’t want to create your own dungeon, there are oodles of pre-written dungeons that should be pretty easily convertible for whatever OSR game you choose to play. I’ll list a few below!

Dungeoneering, by Grinning Rat.

DUNGEONEERING is a quick-and-dirty tabletop role-playing game where players explore dungeons, gather treasure, and fight monsters. Game Masters are encouraged to use the sample dungeon within, or generate their own with the creation tools, to facilitate these dangerous delves.

Dungeoneering feels like a quick one-shot type experience about gathering as much loot as you can inside a dungeon run. The amount of treasure you gather is also a measure of how well you did - a “score”, if you will. The game states that it is best built for exactly 4 players, each with a different character class and skill-set. For the dungeon master, the game has instructions on how to build a dungeon, complete with roll-tables for dungeon types and layout. You’ll probably do well enough with a grid map and some markers, although the creators of the game have a few supplements available: Catalysts, which expands character options and Wanderers which not only provide two new roles, but also gives you more dungeon options and loot.

Errant, by Kill Jester.

You have no home. You have no job. You have no friends. You have no family. You have no prospects.

What you do have are a handful of pennies, a blithe disregard for your own life, and a particular set of skills. The kind of skills that make respectable folks avoid you. 

Out there, beyond civilization, lies danger: monsters and magic and  ancient ruins pregnant with treasure. Death is likely, but what did you  have to live for anyway? At least out there is the chance to make  something of yourself, and maybe even get back at those who wronged you. This is no life for decent folk, but you’re not decent folk. You are an Errant.

What is Errant? Errant is a classic fantasy role-playing game in the vein of the first few editions of that role-playing game and its many imitators and descendants such as Knave, Into the Odd, and The Black Hack. It is freely compatible with material for all those games as well as the newest edition of that role-playing game, with conversion guides provided within.

With over 200 pages of rules, Errant provides detailed instructions for all kinds of things that could happen in play: travel, magic retainers, exploration, combat, and more. The players will create a map as they play, filling it in according to what they understand - and importantly, not necessarily accurately. The GM’s map may have many more secrets or truths that the characters will likely have to work to discover.

Errant happens over the course of different kinds of turns, which have a different procedure depending on what is happening in the game. There is a process for Exploration, for Combat, and for Downtime, which might provide you with the structure to move from one part of the story to the next… but it also might be a bit slower than the kind of game you’re looking for.

If you want content for Errant, it’s certainly out there! Kill Jester has an adventure called Tomb Robbers of the Crystal Frontier, as well as a module called The Curse of the Ganshogger, to get you started.

Crowns, by Ward Against Evil.

Humanity hides in sheltered villages. Monsters prowl the wilderness.  You are the few foolish enough to leave safety. Find your fortunes in the dungeon. And try not to die.

Crowns is a simple enough dungeon system with advancement tied to the amount of gold you acquire - so I think it meets the treasure requirement for sure! There are very specific rules for line of sight, doors, lighting, and creating your own openings in the cracks and nooks of the dungeon, which can help make the dungeon feel alive and exciting - although definitely not safe.

As is typical in the OSR style, you won’t find a fully fleshed out dungeon in the rules, although you will find rules on how to make your own. If you want some extra bits to play with, Crowns does have some interesting supplements, such as Season of Crows, a war-based expansion event, and Armies of Man, a bestiary that looks like it works rather well with Season of Crows.

Crawlr: Basic, by BLK Feather Press.

From the Black Sludge seeping from the lip of the Primordial Cauldron crawls the descendants of dead men. YOU are born from that sludge, and when you die, you shall return to the sludge.

CRAWLR is a table-top role-playing game where you and your friends take on the role of adventurers, cutthroats, profiteers, and even heroes all in the collective imagination of your minds. All you need is pen, paper, and 2d6.

Crawlr: Basic is rather lightweight, but it has rules for changing the dungeon as you go, and a neat little mechanic for timing how long a torch lasts, which might heighten the danger of the dungeon. It also has a table for creatures’ reactions upon stumbling upon you, and a d66 table for useful items that you might pick up. When it comes to traps, I think you might have to get ideas from other modules, but the creator looks like they might be releasing an “Advanced” version in the future.

.dungeon remastered, by snow.

Welcome to the ruins of Annwn. The once populated hills of this massively multiplayer online game are now void. They call it a Dead MMO. A polygonal mess of PS1-era graphics, empty plains, and dungeons that grow and grow and grow from the inside of the planet's wounds. Up above, the eye of the sad god glares its chromatic light down upon the remaining players, while its tormented hand contorts into magical shapes, rarely crossing paths in their messy orbit. When they do, the shadow magic that powers the game explodes with its ancient might.

In .dungeon, you play through character creation as if it was a game of its own, with each step formatted like the room of a dungeon. You generate the world using dice rolls, while the game itself is played using a hex map. You can run an adventure like a hex crawl, which generates interesting encounters and scenery every time your characters move to a new hex. You can use elements from the book to generate a hex crawl, but it looks like there’s also a “tutorial” level that your characters will encounter directly after character creation.

.dungeon is also fantasy-ish: it takes place in a video game, so your adventurers are likely to run into a few places or things that have something a bit more sci-fi in nature. I think that overall, the layout of this book makes the game easier for the group to learn how to all play at the same time, which might be good for a GM who wants to spread the responsibility of game knowledge a bit more evenly. I’m not entirely sure how a hex-crawl would map onto a dungeon, but I think that a lot of the vibes carry across.

Slash Hex, by Danielaurence

Slash Hex is an adventure role-playing game in which players will use their creativity and imaginations to explore a wild and dangerous world, hunting for treasure, defeating monsters, and engaging in other mostly heroic exploits.

This game is heavily inspired by giants that have come before, most notably in name by the /X side of the original B/X books, but also Basic Fantasy, Knave, White Box, and The Black Hack.

While it is inspired by the aforementioned games, Slash Hex has morphed into something that has a footprint of its own, while still remaining largely compatible with classic modules.

What I think Slash/Hex has going for it is the list of fantasy monsters - typical monsters, but there’s a lot of them - as well as the well-detailed list of magic items that you can pick up and use while exploring a dungeon. Most of the focus of this game is on character abilities, so if you want a more unique character, you might like this game. The downside is that the game as it is has little to no advice on how to create a dungeon; I’m thinking that perhaps the creator is relying on you to find other established dungeon modules and use their rules to run through those.

Dungeon Crawl Classics, by Goodman Games.

You’re no hero. You’re an adventurer: a reaver, a cutpurse, a heathen-slayer, a tight-lipped warlock guarding long-dead secrets. You seek gold and glory, winning it with sword and spell, caked in the blood and filth of the weak, the dark, the demons, and the vanquished. There are treasures to be won deep underneath, and you shall have them. 

Return to the glory days of fantasy with the Dungeon Crawl Classics Role-Playing Game. Adventure as 1974 intended, with modern rules grounded in the origins of sword & sorcery. Fast play, cryptic secrets, and a mysterious past await you: turn the page…

DCC RPG is a fast-paced, open-feeling rules set allowing for epic game experiences without unnecessary tethers. It uses modern game-play while paying homage to the origins of role-playing and the fun that it inspired.

Dungeon Crawl Classics is one of the largest, most popular OSR titles, with more than just fantasy up its sleeve. You can find the same rule-set in its sister products, such as Mutant Crawl Classics (post-apocalyptic), or X Crawl Classics (dystopian fantasy). There’s also oodles of content built for this rule-set, which will give you a story or adventure ready to run right out of the box. This is traditional dungeon-crawling, complete with treasure as a reward, and plenty of puzzles and traps to work through.

You can get the free Quickstart rules here, and I’ve heard that the fanbase and creative community is also very supportive!

Some dungeon modules to consider include:

White Scales, by 1pagedungeons, which introduces a low-level dragon.

The Valley of Flowers, by Phantom Mill, which was Ennie-nominated this year!

You might also like Cairn, by Yochai Gal, which has a 1st and a 2nd edition, both of which are free. There are many many supplements for this game, and it often matches well with Into the Odd adventures as well.

i wanted to blend dimensional travel and one of my favorite shows in one. i feel like levi deserves all the love and comfort after what he went through and i wish i, or someone else, were there to do it. what better way is there than to write a fic about it? it’s slightly reader inserted but not too descriptive.

THE ONE WHO SAVED PARADIS

levi ackerman x isekai reader : a moment ago, you were at the campus library. the next, you’re being escorted to the king of the island for a celebratory feast. adventure awaits beyond the hellish gates, a world of magic and death lies ahead.

this is an isekai fic but more like “the rising of the shield hero” type of universe. it’s medieval. magic and game-like leveling. includes dark content like prostitution, underground market and slavery, alcohol consumption. the reader is a woman, so she goes through catcalling, people calling her rude names, and things as such that adds to the storyline (that said, the reader doesn’t get touched, just yelled at. i don’t have the heart to write that dark of content). this is probably the most darkest fic i have ever written out, so it’s not for the faint of heart.

DEAL BREAKER

ceo levi ackerman x employee reader : the stupid things that people would do for money blows you away. sure, you’re in a desperate need of it, but you wouldn’t do anything insane. something like that would be ruining a blind date on behalf of your friend, completely unaware that man is the ceo of the company you work for. no, of course you wouldn’t make a deal with him, hoping he doesn’t fire you. is the money worth risking your career?

this one is inspired by the k-drama known as business proposal. i wanted to make this comedic but angsty at the right moments. levi strikes me as a workaholic who doesn't want to be in a romantic relationship. i'm trying out love triangles in this one.

A HEAVY BURDEN CALLED FATE

satoru gojo x isekai reader : your mundane life takes a heavy turn when you land up in the world of jujutsu kaisen, a popular shonen manga.

yet another isekai fic but with jujutsu kaisen. satoru gojo is one of the characters that i instantly fell in love with, but this is mostly for comfort with other characters. perhaps we all know what happens in the manga with gojo. but i just want to give so many people a hug, especially nanami. can the reader save people? it’s heavily canon divergent, so i don’t think a lot of people are going to like it if i ever posted it. it’s also slightly reader inserted for the storyline, but again, not too descriptive. also the reader’s technique is literally sung jinwoo because he’s so badass.

last but not least, PROMISE ME

satoru gojo x sorcerer reader : everyone in jujutsu high knew not to mess with the strongest trio. that was you, satoru gojo, and suguru geto. undefeated, one of a kind. a friendship so strong that nothing stood in the way. an intimidating amount of strength combined together. there was always a solution to a problem as long the trio had each other, no matter the horrible things that came by, itching for a fight. but in a world full of curses, nothing was promised except for one thing—an expiration date.

this is a canon fic where you become best friends with satoru and suguru in the early years of jujutsu high, but things happen. you leave to study at your hometown, away from satoru, but you and megumi know each other and keep contact. you’re still trying to find suguru since he left. at some point, you come back as a teacher for megumi’s sake but have to deal with satoru’s shenanigans. does your friendship with him blossoms again? is there more? maybe he ruins it once and for all. maybe you do.

Sex Lies and Videotape

Spader plays Graham, a gentle weirdo who is impotent and has a kink for interviewing women about their sex lives and then watching the videos of said interviews back when he's alone.

watch it for: the interviewing the impotency combo have huge vampire!daniel vibes. he's so non-threatening, so politely weird, so eager to lie back and let a pretty auburn haired person touch his face. 100% molloy vibes.

Crash

you've already seen this, anon, but for anyone who hasn't: Spader is James Ballard, a guy who gets into a car accident and discovers a whole underground culture of weirdos who are horny for car crashes, and keep escalating their dangerous sex acts to find new thrills

watch it for: listen this movie is so outrageously horny and all about putting other people's lives at risk to get your own thrill, and if that isn't vampire adjacent i don't know what is. also the wife of spader's character is so emotionally flat and full of clinical vocabulary. the scene with her and spader in bed, talking about him sleeping with a man- it's armand and daniel, just trust me.

Secretary

a CLASSIC. he's the original Mr. Grey, deeply repressed dom who hires maggie gyllenhal as his secretary and ends up in a bdsm relationship with her. it's a very sweet movie with lots of kink, it's a lot of fun.

watch it for: the theme of letting your guard down and being fully understood. he's not at his most molloy here, but it's just a great film and gives you lots to think about in terms of what constitutes a relationship and letting another person in.

Dream Lover

Spader has a one night stand turned marriage with Madchen Amick, with all sorts of psychological twists and guessing games about who is the insane one and who is lying about their entire life.

watch it for: he's gorgeous, the sex scenes are 🥵 and if you squint you can blur Madchen Amick into looking like Armand lol he goes from gentle lover to mentally unhinged to murderer and looks beautiful the whole time, what else do you want?

Jack's Back

i don't even know how to explain this movie except to say that it's an 80's serial killer flick that's so bad it's good. Spader plays twins so you get to see him as the good boy and the bad boy here.

watch it for: the twin he plays in the first 1/4 of the movie is very molloy, so sweet and flirty and dedicated to his job. he does a lot of great eye rolling and arguing and then gets into the most weirdly kinky bad spot before his brother shows up. lots of nice shots of spader bloody, sweaty, smoking, exhausted, or some combination of all four. pure 80s trash but molloy adjacent in that he's a beautiful eyeful getting into trouble.

Bad Influence

More schlock in which Spader strikes up a friendship with bad boy Rob Lowe and gets his life ruined/is convinced to do some awful shit before embarking on a quest for revenge.

watch it for: Spader looking gorgeous in glasses, starting out innocent and then doing lots of unhinged things. it's more 'so bad it's good' stuff and seeing him be gentle but also get violent gives me so many thoughts about vampire daniel.

Stargate

A sci-fi flick in which he plays a physics nerd who is able to open a portal to another planet. Basically ancient aliens meets terminator.

watch it for: his character is literally named daniel and he's so sweetly passionate about his science stuff/ancient languages, very 'daniel molloy: pupil of marius' tbh

Other fun movies, but which are scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of quality or how often he appears:

•Tuff Turf (he is SO pretty in this one) •Cocaine: One Man's Seduction (watch a compilation of his scenes via youtube for some 80's daniel/angry daniel fodder) •Pretty in Pink (he's a wealthy 80s bad boy who's only in part of the film, the visuals are nice for picturing Night Island Daniel) •The New Kids (an awful movie in which hs plays an awful person but he gets covered in blood and has the kinkiest scene where he gets tied up, when you see it you'll know) •A Killer in the Family (more god awful stuff, but he's so so pretty and so permanently annoyed I couldn't look away) •Storyville (so, so dry but the jiujitsu scene and the kiss scene with the lawyer lady are worth seeing) •Curtain Call (really, really hard to hunt down but it's a cute romcom where he lives in a haunted house and is permanently annoyed, also him dancing with his love interest is so sweet and lovely i'm still picturing armand and daniel dancing like that)

I think this breaks down 80% of his filmography lol But really, watch sex lies and videotape, crash, and secretary for sure!! The rest are just excellent oggling material/potential smut inspo ♥

ahh, i'm actually going to answer this for---last year, because i remember it and also bc i hit my reading goal last year!!

so my actual answer would be nona the ninth, but as i have already rec'd gideon to bean and mentioned harrow in this list, i shan't count it.

i think i'm gonna go with The Midnight Lie by Marie Rutkoski, which is part one of a duology. the first is a retelling of cinderella, the second of sleeping beauty.

the first, to me, was much more enjoyable than the second, although i deeply enjoyed both. the first is singular pov, the second is split (i liked the LI's more!)

the book takes place on an island which is segregated into three classes / rings, each of which enjoys a vastly different quality of life than the other. the protagonist lives in the lowest class, where, if you're charged with a crime, no matter the severity, the guards can take any tribute they ask---from a few strands of hair to some blood to an eye, etc. she works with her guardian to help sneak people out of the lower ring and into the upper rings, and has always yearned for a taste of them hersellf. after spending a night in prison, she meets an outsider--the first on the island in many years--who helps her achieve just that.

also the plot twist in this book is. amazing.

but, uh. The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett!! i started the discworld series with the tiffany aching series, and i highly recommend <3 the nac mac feegles make me giggle so much <3

i technically answered this on bean's! that would be "a girl of the limberlost" or "the secret garden" bc they both remind me of my mom.

Legends And Lattes - Travis Baldree! cozy, slice of life fantasy with a sapphic romance. an orc retires from adventuring to open a coffee shop in a city that's never heard of coffee. (its a gnomish thing.) has a lot of dnd-like setting things and so much found family <3

also it made me hungry, so like. have ur favorite warm drink & pastries on hand when you read it bc you may also end up wanting them <3

okay so first! um. when i think winter / autumn / summer / spring read i don't necessarily think about season in the book itself, but rather like... how i feel during those seasons. so! autumnal reads i prefer spookier vibes; summer i want lighter books i don't have to focus too much on bc the heat has melted my brain; and for winter i want books that are good for spending a long time under blankets, so. chunkier the better. (i don't know what a spring read is to me.)

i am going to answer this one with two books!

the first i have not actually read -- The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon, which is a fucking beast of a book. i am... about 20%? through it? i think? but i had to put it down bc i couldn't give it the full attention it deserved. however, i think, due to its size, it would be a lovely book to devour over a handful of snowy days, curled up in blankets <33

the second i have read, and i actually wouldn't call this one chunky, but. i dunno. it's made for a nice evening read, i think. anyway! The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia A McKilip.

⛔ Do you have a fic you started, but scrapped?

so many... most of them stay unpublished but very rarely I fuck up and post a chapter of a fic and then lose all motivation to write more of it (I'm so sorry to fans of the crimeboys surfing au). but yeah most of the scrapped fics stay in the vault of my google drive. I have a cyberpunk au (similar to glass but without the religious and royalty elements) that I still might hop back on one of these days, I have a few midwestern gothic horror fics I started that I'm holding onto for a rainy day, there was a slice of life sandduo fic that was supposed to be like 3-4 chapters but I didn't even get the first chapter finished before I lost interest, but that's just off the top of my head. there are dozens of wips I start and sometimes I know I'm never going to publish them, but other times I'm like hmm I'm gonna write a bit and let me feel this out to see if I want to write more and then I just. don't.

I think the furthest I ever got in an unpublished wip that I ended up scrapping was uh... over 50k words. I'm not joking I scrapped over 50k words of a fic once (it's a really old one that I started pre-clinic so it's not really the kind of stuff I write about now) (it's actually c!ranboo centric that's how you know it's old LMAO)

The Edge of Existence -An AU! version of that scene in Power of the Doctor, but with Brax. Is Brax ready to move onto the final stages of the afterlife? Or is everything as it seems?

Recommend a great fic centered on your favorite character! Oh, I have so many involving Brax! There's so many fantastic works out there. After All, I collected you by @c0rrupt3dsp1r1t It's such an amazing fanfic, and i'm currently doing a re-read of it to catch up.

They've finally set the Collection's timeline straight- or as straight as it'll go. A century ahead of where it should be, but that's fine. Benny's been off with the Doctor again, but Brax isn't keen on it. When another alien infection gets into her head though, there are things she realizes she can't hide from him anymore.

As a relationship between a now technically elderly human woman and the manipulative Time Lord best friend who sort-of-kind-of-didn't-actually ruin her life though, it's bound to be a bit of a rough one, at least at the start. Especially with ghosts of the past, both friend and foe, coming back to haunt them. And a broken piece of magical Gallifreyan ceramic is causing time to unravel- but for the most part that's a separate problem entirely.

Bernice Summerfield has a lot of friends though, both faces old and new. It can't be all bad with them around.0 I'm also going to recommend another one, because I binged read these two so hard last year and i still think about them constantly. It is a Ten/Rose and Brax/Romana-centered fanfic. But it is SO well written. It's not completed and I'm not sure if the author will ever up date part two, but its such a fun ride. They are called Speaking His Language and Reclaiming Gallifrey. by Groovykat. Reclaiming is the sequel, but I highly recommend reading Speaking His Language FIrst. The first one is more centered on Ten/Eight/Rose, but the beginning of Brax/Romana and the Gallifrey gang saving Gallifrey plot in this build up is fantastic.

Summary of Speaking his Language:

When Rose Tyler runs because of an adventure gone awry, she ends up deep inside the TARDIS of another Doctor. He takes off before he realizes he has a stowaway on board and ends up on a planet Rose never thought she'd ever get to see. When he finds his little stowaway, and sees her current state, he finds out that this is not going to be as simple as just taking her back to himself...

...Especially when she's undecided whether or not she wants to go back to him at all.

Recommend a fic that makes you sad (in the best way!!)! Some great angst and/or hurt/comfort!

Tommy is nothing like the wild mer out in the ocean, who spend their lives scraping by just to survive, who kicked him out of the pod when he was a baby because he was too small. He’s also better than the pit mer, who can’t overcome their wild instincts and know nothing but fighting.

At first, Tommy forgets all about Niki’s vague warning. He’s just so happy to see his best friend again, alive and well and all in one piece. Tubbo’s okay. Tubbo’s okay, and in front of him, and suddenly everything bad in the world is gone, if only for just a moment.

And then Tubbo turns to look at him.

Wilbur had many regrets in his life, being lost in his madness and the urge for revenge drowned leaving a shell of who he once was. It was only in his dying moments that he regained himself but it was already too late for him leaving him drowning in wishes and regrets. However waking up in another different universe where wilbur was never born and family soulmates exist, so when wilbur said he wanted to fix the mistakes he never expected this turn of events.

In one world wilbur dies and he would return as a ghost missing his memory and trying to fix what he did in life but in this one wilbur dies and wakes up in another world where soulmates exist and the wilbur of that world was never born so wilbur/ghostbur takes his place and tries to make up his mistakes to the other version of his friends.

hello! long time fan, second time asker! any fallout/fallout-esque ttrpg recommendations? esp. styled after 1, 2, and new vegas. could be recommendations based on setting, vibe, mechanics - whatever you like :) i did already get after the bombs fell by the illustrious aaron king on your recommendation, and am very excited to play! if you've already answered this kind of ask before, then maybe some recommendations for trigun-esque ttrpgs - i love the setting of trigun, and i think it would lend itself well to an rpg. anyways, thank you so much for all you do, and for opening my eyes to so many fun games! happy adventuring to you!

Alright so for Fallout games, I think I did a really good job in my Fallout Recommendation Post, and I also reblogged this post a while back that has a few more hits involved. I might also have a few more recs at the end of this post. So I guess what we’re going to try to do today is find some games that would lend themselves to running a Trigun-style game!

I haven’t seen Trigun, so I did some research about it. From what I understand, it’s about Vash, a superpowered outcast who’s being hunted by people for a big bounty, despite his vow to never take another person’s life. The series seems to be an examination about the choice to act or not, and the characters all seemed to be flawed or haunted in one way or another. What’s really interesting to me is that this feels to have a lot of overlap with the themes of Cowboy Bebop, especially since the creators of Trigun appear to be inspired by westerns as well.

With that in mind, I’ve got a lot of space - western ttrpgs here; the settings of all of these can probably be altered to reflect more closely the setting of Trigun, without doing that much harm to the way the rules work.

BXLLET, by Rathayibacter.

The world was broken, a long time ago. We've fought hard to build something better in the aftermath, but we're haunted by the ruins, weapons, and monsters of the past. Will you scratch out a corner of paradise, or will you give in to the temptations of the gun on your hip?

[BXLLET> is a game about systems of violence and power in a world rebuilding itself. As wandering gunslingers, you'll travel the world and do what you can to help the people you encounter. You'll become more powerful the more bullets you carry, but you'll also struggle with the responsibility that power carries with it. Violence will come easily to you, but can you feed crops with rivers of blood?

This game deals with issues of gun violence, exploitation, and apocalypse, and those sensitive to those issues should go into this fully aware. It's not a game for fascists, bigots, capitalists, or their lackeys, and shouldn't be approached from a perspective that boils the complexities of the world into "good guys with guns vs bad guys with guns."

If you want a game that directly tackles the uses of violence and the weight that comes with the decision to kill, I definitely recommend checking out BXLLET. One of the most poignant mechanics of this game revolves around the storage of bullets, and the way your bullet hoard gives you powers. If you spend a bullet, someone will die - you won’t have to roll for it. But if you spend your bullets, you’re also spending your XP. I think it’s very interesting that you only gain the use of special powers if you choose not to spend your killing resource - and by using your bullets to kill, you also lose special, very effective powers.

Even though BXLLET isn’t necessarily a space western, I think it definitely communicates the themes of Trigun in a very interesting way, and I definitely think it’s worth checking out.

Orbital Blues, by Soulmuppet Publishing.

This is the rock and roll future of yesteryear that never was—and nobody wanted.  It is an intergalactic age of cowboys, outlaws and bandits playing on an interstellar stage. It is a time of hyper-capitalism and a cut-throat gig economy. Unreliable trash-heaps carry scrappy underdogs to their next gig, and corporation freighters lumber across the horizon laden with an empire’s bounty. These are the music-fuelled, moon-age daydreams of a rebel space age.  These are your ORBITAL BLUES.

ORBITAL BLUES is a lo-fi space western roleplaying game from SoulMuppet Publishing, written by Sam Sleney & Zachary Cox.  A roleplaying love-letter to off-beat sci-fi, vintage music, and cooperative old-school styled roleplay, Orbital Blues allows you to play out rules-light tabletop adventures in the style of space westerns. Stepping into the shoes of Interstellar Outlaws, players band together to form Crews, and navigate a hard-going, gig-economy living on the fringes of a space-faring society.

Orbital Blues is more in the style of Firefly and Cowboy Bebop, but from what I gather about Trigun, that somewhat sad western feel rings true for that series as well. As sad space cowboys, each of the players chooses a Gambit - a special ability that is special to your character - as well as a Trouble - something that haunts your character, a problem that just won’t go away. Playing into your Trouble grants you a Blues, a measure of how much of your past sins weigh down on you. Should your Blues get too high, you’ll have to confront your Trouble, but this also allows you to spend your Blues like a resource, and at the end of the scene, you can gain new abilities, restore health, or increase a stat by 1.

If you want a game where wrestling with your past and your worries is what fuels your character’s story, you want Orbital Blues.

Clink, by Technical Grimoire Games.

Clink is a tabletop RPG about drifters, the creeds that bring them together, and the history that drives them apart. This game uses coins to tell a story inspired by spaghetti westerns, ronin tales, and shows like Firefly or Supernatural.

Your past is a mystery, but your Creed drives you forward.

Characters begin as rough sketches of the shifty sort you’d see in an old Western or Noir film. They all start as blank slates, their histories unknown. Tell stories about their past and create your character as you play.

You can play Clink in the setting of your choice, but what remains true about the characters is that they are competent, and they drift from place to place. As a group, all of you have the same Creed, a commitment that the group promises to follow - perhaps that they will seek revenge, or that they will never kill someone in their search for peace. Your characters will also have personal Triggers - certain situations or actions that prompt them to do something that puts them and the group in trouble. Your backstory isn’t written at the beginning of the game, but rather unraveled through moments called Flashbacks, which do double duty as exposition as well as the reason why your Drifter is good at roping, shooting, piloting, and more.

Finally, Clink uses coins, two of which are flipped every time you attempt something difficult or dangerous. As long as one of those coins comes up heads, you’ll do alright - but get double tails and your success comes at a cost - a Scar. Scars are dark moments from your part, moments you wish you didn’t have to relive. Gain too many Scars, and your group may splinter, bringing the story to a bitter or sorrowful end.

Dubious Pursuits, by Nested Games.

Dubious Pursuits is a short, PbtA RPG  for 4-6 players about Bounty Hunters in pursuit of their target, emulated stories like Cowboy Bebop. Your pursuit will be propelled not by violence, but by learning personal details about your bounty and what brought them to this point. What will you do when you finally catch up with them? 

Dubious Pursuits credits Cowboy Bebop as a source of inspiration, but I think it has the ability of delivering an emotional story that challenges your players to face the complexities of chasing down someone while learning things about them that might make bringing them to justice harder and harder to do. I don’t own the game so I’m not sure how much control the table has over the truths of the target, but I wonder if it might be possible to use this game to approach a super-powered bounty from the perspective of someone like Meryl Strife.

24BB: The Mud, The Blood, & The Beer by Calvin J’onzz.

You are a sinner. You are wicked. You have taken human life, first in self defense but then because it felt good. You have stolen from those in need, first to survive but then because it was easy. You have treated humans as objects and property because they were less powerful and could not stop you. But now you have stopped doing those things. You are still that person—you still want to do those things—but you are trying on a different approach to life. You have realized a new ethos, and you feel deep camaraderie with any who share it.

A Western. The world presented here aims to reflect the weirdness of Trigun and the energy of The Mandalorian without losing the tension of For a Fistful of Dollars. The gravitas of Clint Eastwood's The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly or the schlock of Patrick Swayze's Steel Dawn is optional. 

The rules for MBB are pretty easy to pick up - different size dice that scale up with your skill and a simple threshold of 4 to beat for any given roll - and the setting is minimalistic, allowing you to flavor or fill it as you like. Trigun is listed directly in the series of references for this game, which tells me that you’ll be able to create a character similar to Vash without any trouble.

A unique mechanic to this version of 24XX is your character’s edge. Edge is a meta-resource (that could have a physical manifestation) belonging to your character that can give you a boost when you need it, or that can help you avoid some kind of consequence. Edges are one-use items that are erased when tapped, although they can be gained again during play. You can take an edge when you play into your one redeeming virtue, such as never harming kids, taking others’ burdens, or aiding in forgiveness. The game comes with a whole roll table to inspire your personal edges, and I think these virtues make this game an homage to Trigun more than anything else.

Beyond just about everything that you’ve been told is necessary to survive, though. But that’s ok. Dust yourself off, pick yourself up, and let’s take a stroll…

Magitech Space Western is a card-based hack of Powered by the Apocalypse, using a standard set of playing cards to determine the outcomes of actions instead of dice. It also includes variants of Poker and Blackjack to abstract player conflict and vehicle action, respectively.

While this game comes from the PbtA design school, the use of cards instead of dice leans into the themes of the genre, asking the players to build their characters according to two card suits of their choice. These card suits represent different aspects of a character’s personality. The staggered successes of PbtA show up here as the values on the cards you draw and play - 7-10 for a mixed success, Jack-Ace for a full success, and a 6 or lower for a a miss. However, since you’re playing from a hand that you might have, you may occasionally get to choose what you play - and playing cards that align with the suits you’ve chosen give you something extra to spend down the road.

Since you’re playing from a deck, you can to some extent plan around what’s already been drawn as you play. I think this might also allow an ebb and flow as you tell the story - a string of bad luck should lead to something good, and a string of good luck means that there’s trouble down the road.

When it comes to setting, you’re all existing in a capitalistic world that ignores the troubles of the marginalized and the backwater folks. Expect to attract trouble from the rich, the powerful, and the desperate - and expect that things are never going to go completely your way.

I've written a lot, you know, over several fandoms. This was incredibly hard. In the end, I determined my own favorites are the ones I have reread over and over. And even then I'm gonna cheat with some honorable mentions at the end.

In chronological order:

1 - Unexpected (FO4, F!SoSu/Kellogg, rated E, 30K words, 'ware the tags). Listen, sometimes you just need to be the change you want to see in the world. Kellogg's arc disappointed me on many levels. From the standpoint of him being a 'villain' to the possibly haunting everyone's favorite synth bait. This was my first truly canon divergent AU, and I never meant for it to become a full fic, I honestly didn't. But I ended up falling in love with the concept I'd created, so I had to see it through to the end. I have a weakness for the broken ones. Tien Xu remains the OC with the darkest backstory. Seriously, pay attention to the tags if you read it.

2 - Accidental Synchronicity (ME, Jack|Subject Zero/Thane Krios, rated E, 17K words). Ahh, rarepairs. Completely unplanned ones, at that. To date I am still 22% of the ship's authors. A one off line in the main fic of my Shakarian series became a plot bunny that wouldn't quit. It grew into a slice of life romance that covered the events of ME2 and ME3, leading to canon's hamfisted ending for Thane. The only reason I didn't change it is because it was already established elsewhere. Still, it remains one of the fics I am most proud of.

3 - Hope Is a Fragile Thing (DA:I, Solas/OFC, rated T, 13K words). In a lot of ways this fic was an experiment. I love to write MCIT's, but it's hard to come up with a backstory sometimes, so I didn't make one. I wanted to write something post-canon, a favorite trope of mine. And I wanted to completely finish a fic before posting it. Many, many of you have found me because of Twist, which is light and relatively fluffy, to say nothing of its sequel that is pure, unadulterated sugar. But angst with a happy ending is my bread and butter.

4 - Of Ruins and Restoration (DA:I, Cadash & Solas, rated G, 3870 words). If you asked me where Lark Cadash came from, I would immediately blame Manka (with all the love, of course), because without her whole entire throng of Soladash works, I wouldn't have fallen down this rabbit hole. Suffice to say, I got hooked. And then I got Ideas(tm). OR&R is the culmination of many headcannons about dwarves, the desire to have more content for a ship I didn't know I needed and the feverish grip of the Muse that sprang out of my head wholecloth at the end of 2021. It is the introductory work for this character I've absolutely gone to pieces with love for. Eventually there will be more of it, but for now it stands alone as a oneshot. There is a companion oneshot that falls outside of her 'canon', as well.

5 - What a Wicked Game to Play (DA:I, Solas/OFC, rated E, 278K+ words, current WIP). 😏 Did you really think this wasn't going to make the list? WG is everything I have ever wanted to put into a fic, and Imogen is the character I have always wanted to write. Aside from being the new shiny (because it really isn't at this point), I have enjoyed almost every moment of digging into the lore and rebuilding it from the ground up. I have so many plans and so much left to tell for my curly haired girl.

The first to writers that come to my mind are the loves of my life, H and Nancy

H @duskholland (here’s her Tom masterlist) doesn’t have to always go so hard but she does. Every single thing she writes leaves me breathless and in need of a cold drink 😂 The series called ‘the fama game’ has been my motivation to live through the week just so I can read the new chapter on Friday night. And her oneshots? That shit slaps so hard you get backlash. She also does so many amazing aus as well, she even made me kinda into sports!au and that says something. I highly recommend her Peter fics as well!

Nancy @peeterparkr (here’s her masterlist), this girl’s writing style is just so poetic that no matter how hard the plot of the story kicks you in the stomach, reading is just like honey to your heart. Her serieses (is that even a word?) are out of this world good, each one better than the last. The first one I read was ‘limits of desire’ I think, and it made me fall head over heels in love with Nancy’s work. But her talent jump out the most in ‘perdify’ and its sequel ‘perennial’ that is curently in the progress. And let me tell you, it’s not over yet and it has already killed me on so many levels but it’s so worth it! Nancy writes for other people and characters as well, I especially recommend her Harry Styles fics and the series she’s currently wiriting for Anthony Brigderton!

Okay, another person that’s been giving me reasons to live lately is B @touchmethomas (here’s her masterlist) she really fucks me up in the best way possible. She has some serious talent, that girl... her series ‘heartstring’ that’s currently in the works (it’s tom x reader x harrion) is the best and the worst thing that has happened to me in a while. It’s so full of emotion and it hits you right in the heart and even though you read it with tears streaming down your face, you have to go on and just want more cause it’s so damn good. So yeah, thanks for ruining my life babe 😚

Then we have Ava @greenorangevioletgrass (her masterlist). My gosh, Ava’s fics are just fucking amazing, man. I don’t even know what to say, you’re gonna love every single one of them. Her specialty are actress!reader fics and they no joke make me want to drop out of med uni and try acting 😂

Oh lord, now M @peterbenjiparker (her masterlist) okay, so she writes for Tom as well, but first and foremost I have to recommend peter series ‘invisible string’ that’s curretly in progress and making me have a breakdown after breakdown. That girl really goes staright for the kill and just fucks us up everytime. It’s 3 chapters in and I can already tell you it’s gonna be one the best peter fic on this hellsite

My darling Laura @lauras-collection (her masterlist), I love all of her work so much!! She’s so amazing, oh my! ‘two lies and a truth’? Incredible. ‘paint the grass green’? phenomenal! and her haz series ‘beyond being friends’ that has brother!tom is currently making my friday nights and giving me life

Kaili @wazzupmrstark (here’s her masterlist) and her series ‘breaking curfew’ has really made my mind go 🤯🤯🤯 She has a series called ‘instead of you’ currently in progress that I also love quite a lot. And her oneshots are just incredible as well!!

When did you get into Drarry and why?

@tepre made this post about Draco being the best kisser at Hogwarts (did I creepy scroll through their feed to find it again? Yes, but only so people who haven't read it, can- it'sonly weird if you make it weird) and I'd never really thought about Drarry until then. I sent it to my bestie, talked to a couple of people in a different fandom about Drarry, got a few fic recs, and I got sucked in. It was...according to my Ao3 history, sometime early 2019

Which Drarry fic hooked you?

I read Come for Me by Frayach then immediately read all I could of @letteredlettered 's fics. I think my favorite is still The Boy Who Only Lived Twice. It's a masterclass in emotions and intrigue

I literally cannot do this. That's like asking me which child I love more or which cat I prefer (OK that one is Tasha because she's so floppy). But honestly, I have over 900 fics on my kindle, I cannot pick three. I know I didn't have to answer this, but I wanted to express my love for all the fics I've read. When I'm reading them, they are my favorite

Why can't you quit them?

I don't know, but i sure can't. I got into fandom late (I grew up on HP, did the midnight release parties for the books, all the things college age people did in the late 90s/early '00s) but like ao3 and tumblr and fanfic was new to me until like 5 years ago. I was in two other fandoms first, got burnt out, found Drarry and I keep coming back. I've dabbled in like 5 other fandoms since I started reading, but I always return to Drarry.

I think the redemption arc, the tortured child soldier, the fact that almost all of my friends are some of the most talented fucking people and create for Drarry (and other HP characters) and the fact that I still enjoy writing them. Plus it's a HUGE fandom and there are so many choices still

Who breaks your heart more often?

Draco. Because he did the wrong thing and now he has to live with a mistake he made as a teen, something that was heavily influenced by his parents. Harry’s life is tragic af, don't get me wrong, but the struggle for atonement will always kick my heart in the balls

Ideal career for Harry? For Draco?

Omg, I don't know! They're both independently wealthy (well, depending on how you hc the Malfoy wealthy post war) but I just want them to be happy. I want Harry to have a job that he loves that doesn't ask him for a sacrifice. I want a job for Draco that makes him feel like he's giving back to the world in a healthy manner. I want something soft for them both because they both deserve to heal

Harry and Draco are being sent to a desert island for a week with plenty of food and water. Each is allowed to bring three additional items (no wands). What do they bring?

Draco brings a book, or the wizarding equivalent of an eReader, sunscreen (I'm very pale, sunburns are no joke), and a change of clothes, because he cannot wear the same thing every day Potter, no matter if they're the only two people there

Harry brings some sort of ball or sports equipment to keep his hands busy, a change of clothes for Draco because Draco will NOT be able to wash his clothes in the ocean- no matter what he says- and Harry doesn't want to hear him complain, and an mp3 player (with headphones) so he can listen to music

Favorite non-Drarry HP character?

ALL THE KIDS! SCORPIUS! LILY! ALBUS! JAMES! ROSE! HUGO! (Mostly Scorpius, I love that little boy so much!!!!!)

If you had to pick one, enemies to lovers or (enemies to) friends to lovers?

Friends (nitwits) to lovers! The pining! The obliviousness! The "I don't want to ruin our friendship with my (singular) feelings" while their mutual friends all simultaneously facepalm. Ugh, give me two idiot friends who are in love but think the other person isn't interested in romance any day

Would you rather read a fic that made you laugh or one that made you cry?

Usually I laugh and cry at the same fic. It's catharsis in different ways, and I love them both so much

My Favorite Fics 2020

Alrighty. I read a decent amount of fanfiction this year (mostly thanks to Wizards Hearts/Game of Drarry), and I’m here to list out some of my very favorites. Thank you to all of the creators out there who put so much time, effort, and energy into creating beautiful stories, and here’s to lots of reading in the new year 💜 also, this is in no particular order and all rec notes are from my personal fic tracker spreadsheet (if anyone wants details on how I set up my spreadsheet, etc. please feel free to send an ask!) 💕

1) Change on the Horizon by Static_abyss / @static-abyss [Explicit, 118.6k,]

When things settle down after the war, Harry has trouble figuring out who he’s supposed to be and what’s expected of him. At the same time, Draco finds himself having to decide between what his parents want and what he wants for himself. Together, Harry and Draco embark on a journey to figure out who they are as individuals and what that means for their future together.

A canon AU drarry fic based on the relationship between Mickey and Ian from Shameless.

Hands down one of the best fics I've ever read. Ana did the most amazing job at translating Micky and Ian's relationship to Harry and Draco, although it’s definitely not necessary to know Shameless in order to enjoy the story. The writing is stunning, and I loved every single bit of this

2) I’ll Play Your Game by JayseHasNoGrace [Mature, 52.2k]

After quitting the Auror department at the ripe old age of twenty two, Harry Potter finds a nice, uneventful job in an apothecary. At least, it's uneventful until his old rival Draco Malfoy comes into the shop.

They strike up an unlikely friendship, which evolves into an increasingly convoluted scheme, which then snowballs spectacularly out of control into a tangle of lies and blurred lines.

They'd agreed to a fake relationship — in Harry's case, to get the wizarding world to take him off his 'perfect saviour' pedestal, and in Draco's case, just to be given a chance in wizarding society at all — but neither of them expected just how difficult that might really turn out to be. Especially when the stakes grow ever higher, and they both start falling for each other. Just a little bit.

FAKE DATING!!! Ugh, this was so good. I love the media aspect of it, and the way that everything comes together is just brilliant. A must-read for anyone who loves fake dating!!

3) I Can be Your Lighthouse by orpheous87 / @orpheous87 [Teen, 4k]

When Harry gets called to investigate reports of Dark magic, the last thing he expects to find is an almost unconscious Draco Malfoy. After multiple instances, he resolves to find out what's going on.

So, so sweet. I love Harry's determination to figure out what's going on. This is such a lovely fic, and I enjoyed every minute of it

4) Freedom to be by Quicksilvermaid / @quicksilvermaid [Explicit, 169.5k]

Harry Potter is the Boy Who Lived.

12 years after the war, he's become the Boy Who Lived For Everyone Else. He has the perfect wife. The perfect house. The perfect job. The perfect friends.

Only nothing feels perfect.

Until one day he stumbles across a club called Release and begins a journey of self-discovery that takes him to a very different place.

This left such an impact on me, and it’s a fic I think about often. I can't even begin to explain how incredible everything about this is.

5) Dear Diary by AWickedMemory (TeddyLaCroix) [Teen, 20.4k]

// This can’t possibly go worse than the last time I kept a diary. //

After the war, Harry picks up a journal to write in… and it writes back. Luckily, it’s not a Horcrux on the other end this time.

Absolutely amazing. The relationship that develops between Harry and Draco as they write to each other was so soft and wonderful, and I would easily read 100k of this!

6) Grounds for Divorce by Tepre [Explicit, 122.2k]

Malfoy finds a coin. Harry finds a letter.

A story about histories, a story about families. A story about a lemon tree somewhere in Upper Egypt.

I loved this. It was so angsty at times, but well worth it. An absolute classic that I’m so pleased to be able to say I’ve read.

7) Nero Su Bianco by Zuzallove [Explicit, 40.5k]

September 1997. Hogwarts is under the regime of Voldemort and the Carrows. Finding himself alienated by both his friends and his supposed enemies, Draco puts quill to parchment, and writes letters. He addresses them to the only person he can think of, as Hogwarts rapidly falls into chaos and ruin: Harry Potter. He goes to great lengths to ensure the letters are never discovered, and he’s pretty certain he’s done a great job.

Until the day of his trial.

The letters were so much fun to read, even though they were heartbreaking at times. I loved Draco’s characterization in this, as well as how his relationship develops with Harry.

8) Thunder by Keyflight790 [Explicit, 21.5k]

The storm will disappear; the rain will subside; but what's left in its wake will last forever. A story of love and loss, redemption and thunder

I really loved how well Draco's addiction was written. I'm not a huge fan of past relationships, but this was done in such a beautiful way. Plus, talking to dragons!!!

9) dirtynumbangelboy by magpie_fngrl [Explicit, 39.4k]

After Harry’s unfortunate encounter with his ex, Draco Malfoy makes him a proposition. Draco wants his parents to stop matchmaking him and Harry wants to make his ex jealous. All they need to do is simply pretend they’re in love. Problem is… Draco already is.

Amazing. This has absolutely sucked me into the world of fake dating. I could ramble about this forever, to be honest. Simply incredible, and I love how snarky their relationship was. It was the epitome of a good Drarry fic.

10) just tell me when it’s alright by M0stlyVoid / @bonesliketambourines [Explicit, 23k]

Harry’s been fighting tooth and nail for any bit of normalcy he can get his hands on. He’s sick of feeling like something’s wrong with him, tired of feeling different. He thinks he’s finally gotten to the root of it, and has settled into a routine that makes him happy. Naturally, that’s when Draco Malfoy walks back into his life and upends it once again. Has Harry bitten off more than he can chew with his former rival?

YES!! I genuinely loved Harry’s clinginess. This fic was absolutely amazing, and the secret dating was lovely. Plus, bi awakening!!

11) When Hippogriffs and Pygmy Puffs Collide by oldenuf2nb [Mature, 32.7k]

Harry Potter bakes cakes, brilliantly. Draco Malfoy inks tattoos, brilliantly. Owls deliver post, including messages from clients, with an occasional lack of brilliance.

I was really surprised at how much I loved this, especially since I’ve not really read many fics with odd jobs. I absolutely adored the fact that Harry was a baker and Draco was a tattoo artist, and the characterizations were absolute perfection

12) You Send Me (Honest You Do) by firethesound [Explicit, 37k]

As far as potion accidents go in general, and deaging incidents go in particular, Draco knew this could have been so much worse. Harry only lost about ten years, and all his memories are still intact. But the sight of him looking as if he’s stepped straight out of Draco’s Hogwarts memories has dredged up a whole mess of complicated feelings Draco thought he’d buried years ago, and Draco really doesn’t know what to do with any of it.

I absolutely adored this, and I thought the de-aging aspect was done is such a tasteful way. Such a good read.

13) Highly (in)Compatible by daisymondays [Teen, 36.8k]

Draco’s been shagging The Prat Who Lived on and off for a few months when his soul mark starts to change. Draco’s had to accept a lot of adjustments to his life, but accepting that Harry Potter could be his soulmate is one step too far. It can’t be true? Can it?

I LOVED THIS! Oh man, that ending!  Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant

14) Kiss the Joy (Until the Sun Rise) by ICMezzo [Mature, 37.8k]

The Room of Requirement was severely damaged in the war, but not so much that it could not provide for one lost student and another young hero—especially when they needed each other most of all.

An amazing, beautiful, tender fic! The ROR has given them the gift of each other, and I honestly love that it's just the two of them and no other characters. An incredible and soft read

15) December Never Felt So Wrong by MaesterChill / @maesterchill [Explicit, 50k]

'Twas the month before Christmas and sixteen year old Draco Malfoy had never felt worse. His attempts to kill Dumbledore were failing and, as usual, Harry Fucking Potter was a constant thorn in his side.

All that suddenly changed when Draco woke up 15 years in the future and discovered that not only was he allegedly shagging Harry Fucking Potter, he also had thinning hair and a five year old son, and no fucking clue how he got there.

Truly brilliant, and I was laughing from the start. The combination of the aging up, Harry’s off-tune singing to Muggle songs, and soft parenthood were all things I immediately fell in love with. Will be reading again and again

When Draco Malfoy collides with Harry Potter one morning while dropping the kids off at school, things don’t go quite the way either of them would have expected.

Another absolute gem, and I'm still reeling from how amazing it was. I'm always a bit hesitant with kid fics, but this is one of the best depictions of love between Harry and Draco that I've read. I love how supportive Astoria is. Such a lovely fic  

16) Love Found by Peachpety / @peachpety [Explicit, 7.5k]

SUCH a good rewrite of the astronomy tower scene. I can’t describe how much I love the pre-existing relationship, which is a trope I typically steer clear from. And the snark!!! Such a good fucking fic

17) Taro Milk Tea with a side of Depression by Veelawings / @veelawings [Mature, 1k]

Draco sat through twenty grievous minutes of Ministry-mandated group therapy for Newly Registered Magical Beings & Creatures — then promptly stormed out.

Okay, I loved this. The play format was so cool and fit the narration so well. Absolute perfection and SO. GOOD.

18) The Dragon At The Bottom Of The Garden by Zopno [Explicit, 52.3k]

At 25 Harry Potter's life was simple; he flew, sculpted, and had the vault in the back of his mind to keep all unpleasant business. It was stable, but when Draco Malfoy literally hit him with a giant rock; all that changed.

I loved the storyline, especially Animagus bird Harry!! This was such a unique take on an Animagus and post-war fic, and I loved reading it so much   

19) Exposure by GallaPlacidia [Mature, 26.9k]

When Seamus uncovers Draco Malfoy's camboy profile, he, Harry and Ron decide to anonymously book a private show so as to humiliate him later. Fascinated by Draco's confidence, Harry keeps booking private shows under the disguise...

Self prompt: Draco is a camboy. Harry betrays him.

I can't give this enough praise. The hurt of it all was so brilliant. A new favorite for sure

20) you've got the antidote for me by Kandakicksass [Mature, 20.7k]

When Harry Potter unintentionally severs their soulbond before it can fully form, Draco Malfoy resigns himself to a slow death and decides not to burden Harry with a soulmate he's made it very clear he doesn't want.

He's never been selfless before, but for Harry, he can try.

Fuck. Like...fuck. This was so sad and angsty and perfect in all the right ways. Watching everything unfold was so painful but so worth it. Another new favorite

21) A Room Up There (And You In It) by thestarryknight [Teen, 59.2k]

When Preservationist Draco Malfoy was assigned to work on Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place, he was excited to delve into the gorgeous Black family antiques. His excitement quickly ended when something in the House decided it did not like his presence one bit. Featuring a grumpy antiques lover who most certainly did not sign up for this, encounters with a vengeful apparition, and a healthy application of Christmas spirit.

Absolutely fucking fantastic. This fic reads intimacy all over, despite there being no sex. I love preservationist Draco and the way in which information about Harry unfolds. I can’t say enough how much I loved this advent fic, and Starry did such a great job

And now for three fics that I have yet to read/need to emotionally prepare myself for:

1) Modern Love by Tackytiger / @tackytigerfic [Explicit, 61.2k]

Harry Potter, of all people, knows that life isn’t always fair. And no one gets to be happy all of the time. But surely there’s something more—something better—than a rubbish Ministry job, and a lonely old house, and that feeling that everyone out there is doing a better job of living than Harry is.

And it really doesn’t seem fair that Draco Malfoy is back in Harry’s life, all of a sudden, and even though he’s wandless, and living with Muggles, and making his mother cry with his lifestyle choices, he’s happy. So what's he doing right, that Harry isn’t?

Because things don’t really change, do they? And if Harry can’t be happy, he’ll settle for a good night’s sleep, some posh antiques, and the opportunity to find out what Malfoy has been up to for all these years.

And that’s what starts it all.

2) Dragons Don't Know Paradise by  tainara_black / @teacup-tai [Explicit, 50.9k]
