I was talking to my mom about a book I read recently (last week) which was a historical fiction about a gentile woman encountering Christ and thereby coming to believe in Him.

I've still got the full post cooking in my brain a bit but the gist/so far unconnected thoughts are these: my mom got my husband a daily Bible with the readings already split up > we have been reading it together since we got married a year ago > its the same devotional my mom has been using for ~3 or 5 years > complained to my mom that (fictional book) has poor theology and it was really jarring to see the Jewish character in book talk like modern American Protestant > also some other minor issues with the way the characters (or rather, author) uses language to convey spiritual things > my mom instantly talking about how 'yea because Jewish people didn't think about God as their father and are only focused on God's justice and Jesus was talking all about love and mercy so that makes sense why [fictional book] focuses on that'

And . I just. It made me realize (or rather, remember) that us Christians really don't bother to understand the Old Testament or beliefs of first century Jews whatsoever.

There is a lot more to be said but this post is long enough and it is time for me to go to sleep so I'll probably follow up. But that's just been on my mind. The more I delve into scripture and Church History the more I realize that, especially on a cultural level, we are so far removed from our roots, I almost despair of the salvation of our generation. Almost.
