Chapter 24: The Carnifex

Ooh, ok this one is a really fun one!! Alright, the word Carnifex has quite a few meanings. The word carnifex is a noun that means "executioner". It can also refer to the public executioner in ancient Rome. The word comes from the Latin words carni- and fex, which mean "flesh" and "to make" respectively. The plural of carnifex is carnifexes or carnifices. Following that, we’ve got the name, Adulescentulus carnifex , a nickname given to Pompey by his adversaries, which translates to "teenage butcher". Assuming that this chapter is about Leo, I feel like the name is rather fitting. 

Donnie scoffed. That was the problem with words. They were clumsy workarounds. Like trying to write essays with smoke signals. Language kept them from being animals, but you couldn’t turn a feeling into a string of grunts without losing something.

Oh this is so beautifully written!! Anyone Neurodivergent understands this. So many emotions can’t be explained with words themselves. 

Donnie glared at Leo, pulled his knees closer to his chest, and bared his teeth. “Try to chain my damn feet down Nardo. I’ll kill you and delete all your levels in Donkey Kong.”

I feel like the order of the threats are very valid. Deleting Donkey Kong files are not a threat to be taken lightly lol. 

Leo swallowed and lowered his gaze. “Yeah, I’m… gonna put some better ones on him when you’re unconscious.”  “Coward,” Donnie snarled. “Jupp.” Leo didn’t meet his eyes. “Any food you’d be up to get into him?” “Your head on a fucking skewer.”

I find it interesting, as the story has progressed, Leo has gone from seeing Donnie as his brother, to a complete alien. He doesn’t even speak to Donnie as if he were Donnie. In fact, he speaks to him, almost as if he were an object, or a thing. An obstacle, ‘keeping’ him away from Donnie. 

Leo took a sip from the bowl. He wiped his mouth with his sleeve like a barbarian and offered the soup back to Donnie. “Happy with the evidence?” Leo asked, like a guy who had never even flirted with empiricism and much less made her happy.

Empiricism is a philosophical theory that knowledge comes from sensory experience and empirical evidence. The term comes from the Greek word empeiria, which means "experience". Empiricism is contrasted with rationalism, which is the view that knowledge is developed through reason, analysis, or thinking things through. Which is why Donnie and Leo are like two sides of the same coin. One practices empiricism while the other uses rationality. The same, yet different, on polar opposite of the spectrum. 

Leo gave him one back before he took the bowl, raised it to his lips, and drank it himself. He sucked up the last noodle, then licked stray spices and blood from the corner of his mouth.

Oh my gosh, this is just so spiteful! I almost expected him to smash the bowl just to make a point. Or even to express frustration at the most. 

Leo offered him the bowl, the noodles swaying gently. “Of course that’s not important, I don’t even- Shit, you look so much like him, I want to puke. I feel like I’m going stupid.

I find this little distinction quite interesting. Rather than feeling like he’s going crazy, Leo feels like he’s going stupid, which would implies he thinks himself to already be crazy, if not insane.

[“You”. Have: “Me.”] she whispered. She. An entire species’ umbilical cord, knowing 80 thousand years of devotion. And she was nothing compared to…

The wording right there of “umbilical cord” feels really important to me. Anything could have been chosen to display the connection between Donnie and the Technodrome, but umbilical cord just really feels so symbolic. 

Donnie sighed. “You know it hurts Donnie to do nothing. You’re just fine with torturing him?”

We’ve all seen that Donnie is a prideful person. He hates admitting he’s wrong. So the fact that he’d use his name in the third person, just because he’s so scared and feeling so alone, he’d stoop down to Leo’s level of thinking he’s not a real person, but a Krang. That's how scared he is.

Donnie thought about it for 0.36 seconds, before he said, “Fine,” and browsed his memory files for the most difficult-to-come-by-publications. Anything that would keep Leo busy and out of the room for as long as possible. “Get me The Codex of Leicester.”

The Codex Leicester (also briefly known as the Codex Hammer) is a collection of scientific writings by Leonardo da Vinci. The codex is named after Thomas Coke, Earl of Leicester, who purchased it in 1717. The codex provides an insight into the mind of the Renaissance artist, scientist and thinker, as well as an exceptional illustration of the link between art and science and the creativity of the scientific process. I find it interesting that Donnie chose a book that was written by Leonardo Da Vinci. Doesn't necessarily feel coincidental.

“Sure,” Donnie cleared his throat, “but those would bore him, don’t you think? He’s read them, after all. I… He has always wanted to read Donatello’s ‘Study of Humanism’.”

Yeah, this is completely on purpose. He's being cheeky just to be annoying. But honestly, I don't blame him!!

Temperature was the average kinetic energy of particles, so the greater the energy, the higher the temperature. Donnie fumbled for his mystic core, let it flare up in his chest, and bleed into the cuffs. He felt the metal heat up around his wrist. 120°F, 134°F, 140°F. Oh fuck, Oh Santorio, Donnie frantically grasped for the bedcover, the pillow, anything to bite on. 100°F more until he’d reach the first thermal arrest of the curve. Would the cuffs even heat up this far?! Donnie pressed on, feeding his energy to the chains.

Oh gosh, this is so incredibly clever!! I absolutely adore when clever ideas and situations are placed into fanfics like this!! This isn't necessarily something that would be thought of everyday, which makes it even so more unique, and perfect for this scene!!

Donnie dared a glance up at him and for a chilling moment, Leo looked like he was about to lunge at him with the surgical scissors. Leo’s glare was red-rimmed and wet, big pearls of salt rolling down his cheeks.

Hello Hello Ev'rbody!

My name is Tango S. Tekk of the Tek variety! You can just call me Tango or tangotek!

I live in a server called Hermitcraft with my 26 other friends! Sometimes I leave to visit other servers but I don't usually stay long. My favorite servers to visit are one that's like a minigame and parkor themed world that I think I heard Etho call mcc once and my other favorite server is one with a small handful of friends that has some modifications to give it steampunk properties! I haven't visited either in a while though.

I know there was something else I used to do, another server, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was...

I'm a blazeborn human/ender/blaze hybrid. I mainly have traits of a blazeborn; like fire immunity, hotbloodedness, and hydrophobia; however I my enderian background makes for some overlap; such as hydrophobia.

I have an enderian tail but the end of it is a flame, as is my hair, though it rarely ever burns hot enough to actually burn anyone. That and my ears are really the only ender parts that are uniquely ender so most people don't actually realize it.

I've got access to the internet, and by extention Tumblr, through my holo-pad. Xisuma hooked it up a bit ago for us all to use! It doesn't quite fit the season of the steam so I haven't been using my holo-pad much but when I learned I could use Tumblr I rushed to get it out of my storage.

Someone on another server had told me about Tumblr a long time ago and I've been excited to check it out since :)

Blazeborn/Enderian/Human(ish) hybrid. His hair and tip of his tail have fire and he has an ender tail and ears. He is allergic to water, immune to fire, and isn't affected by negative effects (such as hunger and poison)

When he gets nervous, angry, or overwhelmed with emotion he has the tendency to burst into flames. His clothes are (usually) fireproof.

All minecraft servers are worlds and Tango lives almost exclusively in Hermitcraft. He will occasionally leave to visit other servers, like the life server or the create server. Each hc season is a new world and Tango refers to them as "the season of _____" (ie: season of the steam (10), of the dungeon (9), of the eyes (8), of the cartoon (7), etc)

Thank you all so incredibly much for supporting Difference of Opinions Part 1! I never imagined it would get the kind of response it did and all of the love I have gotten for it has inspired my two-part sequel as well as a prequel. 💕

I also appreciate everyone's patience while I work on these. However, I am happy to announce that Part 2 of Difference of Opinions will be posted on Monday, June 26! 😊 Those of you who have asked will be tagged and those who would still like to be can reblog and/or comment on this post of Part 1 and I can add you. Sneak Peek at Part Two:

The glitching was getting worse. By the time you made it to your lab on the other side of the building, it was happening every thirty seconds or so. You stumbled through the door and crashed into one of the computer consoles as you lost your balance. Every inch of your body ached and felt as fragile as glass. It seemed as if the chemical bonds that held your atoms together were about to shatter leading to you basically vaporizing down to the atomic level. Which you guessed was what was about to happen.  Another glitch hit causing you to crumple to the floor. Once your body realigned itself, you tried to climb back to your feet but you just didn’t have the strength to anymore. Instead, you rolled over to your stomach and began to drag yourself over to your desk. It wasn’t far, but by the time you reached it, you were barely able to lift yourself up to reach the hidden compartment underneath. You pressed your thumb to the biometric lock and gave a huge sigh of relief when the drawer popped open. Reaching inside, you pulled out the small cloth bag and held it against your chest. You knew you had to hurry before another glitch occurred, but you were so exhausted that your fingers were clumsy and fumbled as you tried to untie the bag. It took about three times as long as it should have, but you finally managed to open it up and you slid the contents into your hand.  It had been over a year since you had last held the red amulet in your hand but it instantly made you feel stronger. Running your thumb across the spider carved in the stone, you couldn’t help but smile. This little piece of your homeworld would hopefully ward off the glitches long enough to send your message.  Sliding back to the floor and laying on your side, you pressed the amulet to your lips as you closed your eyes and concentrated. Your eyes rolled back in your head behind your eyelids and you felt your mind slip into the space where the intricate web of dimensions existed. Once you sensed who you were looking for, you whispered, “Hobie, I know you can hear me. I need your help. Please. Come get me before it’s too late. I just want to help Miles. I promise. I–” A glitch cut you off and you dropped the amulet as your body was once again torn apart and reassembled by this dimension trying to arrange your atoms to fit its unique configuration. As your body somehow managed to right itself once more, a small sob of pain slipped from your lips. Whatever strength or stability you had gotten from the amulet was now gone, and you felt yourself returning to your body as you no longer had the strength to continue reaching out across the dimensions. It was all over. This lab that you had built with Miguel and spent countless hours lovingly by his side was going to be your final resting place.  You were about to die alone and abandoned.

About Reader's Spider:

Reader's Spider name is Spider-Gazer (nickname = Gaze). She comes from a dimension where there are no firm lines or edges and everything is slightly blurred instead. However, this slight blurring of lines has given her the power to gaze through the barriers of the Acracnoid Humanoid Poly Multiverse and communicate and see into other dimensions. When this happens, her eyes roll back into her head and become completely white. Yet if she is wearing her mask, the spider eyes which are usually white turn the same glowing orange as the paths between multiverses.

She also has an amulet that was passed down for generations in her family along with the legend of the one who would be gifted the power of the spider and use it to bring peace to this and every universe. When she holds it, it helps magnify and focus her powers (since it comes from her universe, it also does not have firm edges).

I try to tag for commonly triggering content but i sometimes forget for stuff like bugs because i simply dont find them scary or upsetting. if you really cant handle seeing a bug at any capacity then my blog probably isnt for you. What's the Story of Dog's Dinner? 🎉 NOTHING!!!!!!! 🎉 ... At least...not a narrative, not...yet. The "story" of Dog's Dinner (in heavy quotes) is about stowaways on a long-forgotten man-made island...named Elysium. Or as its residents "lovingly" nicknamed it... "Isle of Slapstick".

Started way back in the 19th century, what was meant to be mankind's greatest feat, a revolution of engineering and prowess, to make land, countries, and homes, for everyone. Now in the 1940s, it's a sorry sight, a hell on earth, in the midst of the sea with its people stranded on it.

Sickly and immoral, its people are poisoned by the unnatural environment, rendering many of its people infertile, sick, and hungry. It's a dog-eat-dog world, many scrounging for rations, and medicine. However...Elysium is unique in its culture, corruption oozing like the disease it was born from, business can be made with such...desperation for survival. Import businesses, smuggling rings, prosthetics, false fake organs, and even...trafficking. Whether it'd be desperation for new healthy viscera or...desperate mothers hoping for a child. Not many of the people outside the island knew (government officials especially), that with no law to stop the progression of its science...anything is fair game.

Elysium runs on the clever and the heartless, it's a hierarchy of power, and those on top, rule the island with an iron fist, and the smaller ones make do with what they have, collecting scraps, surviving day by day. However...they say, that on the island legends are born, and it's the small voices...the eyes peering through the dark, and the teeth glistening ready to strike. A person, beyond feared, beyond loathed, said to be the severed head of Cerberus under human skin. No one knows where he came from, new arrivals are usually announced to the high heavens, who doesn't love fresh new meat? No...he arrived from the mists of the blackened sea, his eyes glowing with rage. The Devil's Dane lurks, as Elysium's...bounty hunter. The cursed repo man of the island said to punish the unholy, immoral, slimy, goat vomit with the boiling cinders of his unrest. Tattered with scars, a giant never meant to be witnessed, stapled together haphazardly to contain whatever MONSTER was inside. From that day...he will know no PEACE, until he cleansed this perdition, himself.

-But...Those are tall tales, the story actually follows a bounty-hunting group named Cerberus, Charles the muscle and minute-man, Sebastian the group's cleaner and harvester, and Joe the sniper, gambler, and spokesperson. Together, they make a pretty great team, a found family within the walls of this dump. Until...one mission- How did Claire and Charles Meet?

Claire had always seen him at the corner of her eye...Not a first-time guest. His glasses glistened, reflecting her spotlight. He stood so still...the only indication that he was alive was the smoke escaping his lips. Claire has an open secret, she's not just a pretty face, honied voice, and bodacious body for her shows... she's a spy, a keeper of secrets, a great judge of character, and....oh so persuasive, luring poor men and women, to tell a little more than they should have, strumming the strings of their poor little weak hearts. With a generous offer of dough...she'll tell you some particularly juicy blackmail, schemes, and plans from rival groups. An amateur Pinkerton! Quite a business she's mucked up...and...seeing the Dane makes her nervous. She wouldn't believe such stories about one person! Would she...? Well, she certainly doesn't do a great job of covering up that she's scared out of her wits, when her voice, croaks just slightly during one of her performances. Her throat tightened even more seeing another plume of smoke blow out in the darkness, his face illuminated by the dim candlelight, she could even make out that he began to lean in his seat, possibly intrigued by what he was seeing, she couldn't help but warble in her singing voice, as she just knew that he saw her fear. Her dear boss Jones had warned her before that some bad men wanted to hunt her down for all the information she had. He wasn't sure who, but he'd overheard a gruff voice spilling out his plans to: "Wring that little bird's neck until she SINGS FOR ME", thus she was given a gift of a revolver and ammunition, she even scoffed over just how tiny it was, but...admittedly it was portable. It was best to lay low and wait. She sat back in her seat attempting to relax, but couldn't help to recheck the lock and observe her gun several times.

She's never been a great fighter, she never even shot a GUN before...she knew of the environment and its consequences but...to kill a man...? It was justified! Yeah, it's justified. Simple self-defense, play stupid games win stupid prizes! Right? With all the whirring and spiraling in her head, to the best of her ability, she eventually fell asleep. Until quickly, startled awake by the sounds of splintering wood, right outside her door. Heavy footsteps creaked down the halls of the complex. She carefully grabbed her gun and pointed it at her front door. Steady breath, eyes like pins, alert to any sounds of shuffling, she jerked up as she heard the careful turning of the door knob. To her terrified confusion though, the clinking of the copper quickly turned to moans of metal breaking. A short gruff of a man's voice, then her heart sank to her stomach, watching as the doorknob, fell to the ground. Her hands shivered as she watched, a giant of a man, opening the door damn near throwing it off its hinges, enter inside after kneeling down, to squeeze himself into the apartment. His glasses glinted, head quickly turning to the sound of Claire's shivering voice, attempting to feign assertiveness. "Not. Another. Muscle. Or I'll shoot." He trudges himself forward. "I WILL. Don't you DARE test me." He ignores the threat, proceeding to invite himself in. "I will...I-I. Will." she whimpered as the two now were just a foot apart from each other, him clearly observing her. She shuts her eyes tight, turning her head away until a- Click was heard. Confused, she looks down at her shaking hand.

Click...her life was beginning to flash before her eyes, checking the chamber to see it was empty. Weakly chuckling to herself as she spots, her ammunition sitting on her dresser. She knew she was forgetting something, but wasn't sure what she forgot. Her smile quickly fades, however, as she sees this beast now inches away from her face. His voice was haunting, like a low humming growl, deep within his chest, and yet he was merely whispering... "Today's your lucky day." In her eyes, the world faded into a black void, feeling the ground fall beneath her...she had fainted! A very long story short, turns out they were dealing with the same person! Charles searched for the man who wanted to use Claire for his sick gain, the two had suddenly had a common enemy to deal with. It just so happened that he'd...end up in her apartment in search of clues, unknowing of the fact she'd be there waiting (he assumed she didn't know anything about this, but ho-hum.). Thus this entire thing led to a partnership, and now she is a part of Cerberus, nicknamed by the team as "Persephone" now the spy of the group, until this problem goes away...which it does and she goes back to shows. However, with now lingering feelings on both sides, but they wish to remain..."professional" ( it fails spectacularly) . What's Sebastian Doing? Oh I know...he's fine, probably cleaning the preservative jars, observing a dead rat, doing some healthy business...the usual! He's a chipper fellow and a beloved peepaw, so he's never truly alone.

There are no neurotypicals in this series and everyone is autistic as hell. How could I not love this? Favorite character is Near, followed by Mello. A! Horrifically good question! Because Sa is Sa and is allergic to "downtime" and is always keeping herself busy in the most utilitarian ways she can manage, but!!

Singing! :') She used to do it a whole lot for her sister, as well as her own amusement. Since leaving home, though, mostly just for her sister (or children in need of comfort) — and what she does for herself she tries to keep to when she's the utmost of privacy.

In (relatively!) contemporary settings or the like where medias more accessible — reading (especially to help with her literacy) and movies/TV. They're mediums that engage multiple senses (in the latter, audio and visual, and in the former, the words themselves and imagining them), and so are the least likely to have her getting distracted and enable her to be left to her own thoughts. It's for this reason she's not keen on music by itself, but the reverse is why she's not fond of video games— the specific and unique ways they're interactive are very likely to leave her frustrated and more stressed/anxious than before.

TWO THINGS YOUR CHARACTER REGRETS:

The IncidentTM that pushed her to finally leave her hometown :'))) She blames herself for it in every capacity, and to this day considers herself (if anything) a fugitive or the like rather than an actual victim. "If it were not for me, it wouldn't have happened, and so it's completely my fault."

Her Bad YearsTM after she left home (from a few months before thirteenth birthday to the ballpark of ~sixteen and a half, so better part of four years). She blames herself for it because she struggles to acknowledge her abuse, yes, and also moralizes her mental health issues (i.e., see: her severe survivor's guilt and savior complexes)— but primarily because of how she 'failed' her sister. It's always been her job to take care of and provide for Shida, and during that time not only was she unable to properly support her, but Shida had to look after her instead. It's something she refuses to forgive herself for, particularly since she only broke out of it when Shida's life was endangered (which, of course, is something Sasume also blames herself for).

(Another bonus, since the other two are consecutive events: Not asking more questions of or learning more about her parents, especially her mother, when they were around. :') She didn't get much time with them, and even if she couldn't have known it nor been able to properly 'plan' for it at such a young age, she wishes she'd done more and learn more about them while she was able to. Notably, this regret can become far darker when 'the Oshima Plot' and resulting mysteries and skeletons in her parents' history are an active concern.)

few days ago, i met a customer who's a mother at my work ask me to look for something and then she saw my name tag and said that her daughter's name is also mine's. she told me that her daughter was sad that she can't find someone that shared names with her. i told her it's because our name is very unique. the mother told me that her nickname goes by max and i told her my family nickname is backwards of max. she told me that she will tell her daughter that she met someone that shares her name as her's. and i told her, its nice to hear someone to have a unique nickname as mine

Spotting art scam accounts- people who are pretending to be artists edition.

My GOD I am getting so tired of these fuckers. They annoy me to no end but I'm so sad and concerned about how many people they might trick. I'm even more concerned about the art they steal from other artists in order to pretend they are who they are saying they are.

My guess is they take your money and run, or they just AI some shit and then disappear. So here's some tips on how to find them.

I recently got followed by a "rabeccartist" (clearly Rebecca was taken) This is your first clue. They almost always just use a normal western sounding forename. Never an artist nickname or anything. While its true a lot of legitimate artists use their name, its very rarely just their first name - how would you ever be searchable by potential clients?!

Let's see what's on Rebecca's profile!

Could seem innocuous enough, but the hints are here.

Really, first and foremost pushing their commissions without even explaining who they are or what their vibe is.

Almost always say or imply they can do nsfw commissions

No links to a portfolio or mentions of other sites they're on (yes I know not everybody goes everywhere but tumblr isn't exactly the place you get exposure - and how would these artists have got commissions already if not posting on other sites?)

Claims that aren't backed up by posts on their pages

E.g. "creating a world of unique characters" is huge bs. This profile only features "client work" and reblogs of other artists.

This is the pinned post. Showing some other red flags.

Incorrect/unreasonable tags (some real artists do mess with tags to get some exposure, so this isn't always a red flag on its own)

"Client work done"/"commission completed" - with no indication of how they even know the client or got the commsion from. No mention even of what is included in the picture or what the request was for?

Apparently another commission! But this one is a totally different style "furry oc"?? Really? Whose OC? Tag them! Link to their website!

Also I only just notice they just straight up tagged this as AI art so...

And this page leads me to another blog by someone called Helen. (Again, another name- and they pretty much are always womens names).

It was the only picture liked by Rabecca. Rabecca's page doesn't show any of her original characters or artwork for fun or any sort of world building despite her profile offering a "world of unique characters".

So over on Helen's page

Same vibe. Nsfw commissions mentioned, all it says is they love to draw. They usually also offer 3D and 2D commissions. Profile image is clearly not the same artist that drew that lion.

Now I don't watch this show, but someone in the comments helpfully noted this was just a screenshot from the show. Also, this profile doesn't even mention Helluva Boss on it like the other one does (don't come at me if this isn't Helluva Boss I just said I don't watch it). "Client work done" again with no name, no specifications, nothing.

There's the lion. Fan art? Of who? Why? It's lovely art but clearly different from the only other thing on the profile that claims to be done by this artist.

These are both scam accounts. Most likely by the same person. And honestly? I see these on Instagram all the time so I was kind of surprised to see them here. They all have the same or similar MO.

It's kind of funny, although I'm concerned people COULD, I'm so confident that people don't fall for this. I don't know why you would. After all, I am a legitimate artist @gnot-art with years of art under my belt, who sells commissions and showcases my own work on multiple platforms and people rarely commission me XD people don't generally just commission random artists they find on the Internet!!! It's so absurd.

What's even funnier to me is the other main art scam- where someone pretends to be a paying client and rips you off. (I can make another post about how to spot those, too, if anyone wants it). I just find it hilarious to think these 2 types of scam accounts are constantly only ever interacting with each other because they haven't even worked out how unlike actual art profiles what they've made is.

Anyway, I recommend that if you want to commission an artist, you follow them for a bit and get to know them and their style to see if it fits with what you want.

And no legitimate commissioning artist will EVER DM you begging for you to buy something from them.

Its sucks having to use my pen name or self insert name for fics/hc posts.

Because my irl name gets spelled wrongly irl so many times it's frustrating.

And other users n blogs who have the same real name i dont wanna confuse them or readers.

Like it's not huge of a deal it's just something I've noticed.

So i was wondering,Does anyone else feel this way sometimes? Having to use a pen name,nickname,or a self insert oc name to convey that that's you not another person? Or because people use their name wrongly or spell it not the same?

I feel bad for people who have to use one because of people refusing to learn the persons name in their native language the most.

Or worse it's not a common name and it's super unique. Or its really old fashioned and hardly used anymore.

I know my situation is probably minor. And others may have a worse situation.

But it just sucks having to use a pen name/nickname/self insert name all the time.

Especially for more self indulgent stuff. People trying to swoop in on your stuff. When it's clearly for you and you only. Not an x reader or you clearly state its something more for comfort. But you wanna share anyways.

I usually dont have that problem of people stealing self indulgent fics,at least to my knowledge. But some might have that problem. And i wanted to address that too.

If someone makes a self indulgent fic or post. For their blorbo. And that state in tags and in post that it is not for you. Plz respect those boundaries.

Again no hate,no bashing,i understand the wanting to share blorbos,f/os and faves. But some dont like that in the self ship community. And that's ok. We all need to be respectful of each other. (Sometimes i share sometimes i don't wanna share my faves. Shang tsung from the mortal kombat games/series i don't like sharing because well i dont trust people to do him well or respectfully,anyone else of my faves i don't mind nor have any qualms with sharing. Personal interpretations aside. Sharing Shang tsung however? Not so much. I get squick with others takes. And am very particular.)
