i remember a while back you saying in one of these asks that you didnt find classpects that interesting as a writing tool (or something similar, i don’t remember the exact wording) but you seem to be referring to them significantly more since then, both textally in godfeels and when you’ve discussed the work like in these asks - has anything changed in your perspective on them?
astute observation!
so, i don't find classpects particularly interesting as a writing tool. i'm not a big fan of mapping out a character beforehand, engaging in that sort of reverse personality quiz process of defining their wants, their needs, their astrological sign, etc. no hate to anyone who does, but for me it's far more interesting to just let the character decide that stuff for themselves. it's the same process of discovery i apply to the rest of godfeels, which is admittedly a sort of insane way to work and probably shouldn't be taken as an example.
so that's a very specific definition of "writing tool" that maybe isn't what other people are thinking of. i can get didactic about these things because i don't like writing advice or things that seem like writing advice if you squint.
you're right though that classpects are more at the front of my mind than they used to be. part of it is just that classpects are about to be a lot more actively relevant to the narrative (albeit not in the way you would expect), so i've obviously been thinking about them more. which, you know, those thoughts do naturally generate fiction activity which shapes how i intend to write future chapters-- in that sense, are classpects not a useful "writing tool" for me? i dunno.
it's not even that i find them more meaningful structurally. i think giving someone a title and then building their character around it is a great way to come up with wooden characters. in the case of the upsilon kids (who you will be meeting very soon), their classpects emerged through writing a bunch of little test scenes. i'd put them in a room together and give them something to react to. i really want to avoid conventional group dynamics with this crew, so i always pushed them to behave in messy ways. and over time it became apparent that what makes them work is their seeming incompatibility, which i shouldn't say much more about until you've actually got some material to draw your own conclusions from. but the point is, it wasn't until i got a good handle on each kid's vibe that i assigned them their classpects, and i assigned them in a way that was deliberately "underwhelming" or seemingly a bad fit. i did this because i don't like the narratological determinism that can arise when you give a character a title they like too much.
i don't like giving writing advice but i highly encourage young writers out there to not be afraid of writing unusable scenes. it helps to be able to think of the writing in the early planning stages as, in some sense, disposable. because the prose isn't the point-- it's getting to the characters as you understand them. there's so many scenes i've written that will not make it into godfeels proper without significant alteration if at all! and look, i know how it is when you feel like you can barely write, so every word you manage to get on the page is precious and needs to be preserved towards the Final Product. sometimes that's correct! precious things always emerge in this process. but it's nowhere near as many as you think, and the hard lesson is understanding the difference between precious and enjoyable. just because you enjoy the thing doesn't make it right for the story. even pretty trash belongs in the bin eventually.
but again, it isn't wasted work. the words aren't the goal, they're just a happy accident. the real work happens in your head.
uh shit anyway so for instance Dana Straten's classpect is Knight of Mind. i must admit she's an outlier among the upsilons in that i picked her classpect in the gf3 prologue with an understanding of her character that was vastly different from who she would end up becoming. back then all i knew about the upsilons was they'd be Dana, Jade's as-yet unnamed daughter, and two others. for a long time, once Julia came in and really breathed life into Dana, i was convinced that Knight of Mind was just wrong. it was a bad choice for her, it didn't make sense, she should have been something else that had cooler power implications and i should just retcon it to something better before anybody notices. this worry resulted in a lot of conversations with my collaborators, ultimately concluding that it was more fun to just play with the hand i'd unwittingly dealt us. so we took the Dana we felt and asked her what Knight of Mind meant to her, figuratively speaking. wrote some scenes, had more conversations. Julia and i have spent a LOT of time discussing Dana's whole situation.
the thing about this is that i don't think our idea of her changed all that much between when she came into her own in like march/april 2021 and when she properly entered the story in summer 2022 (god it feels like that gap should be a lot longer, but i double checked and it's right). much of what we already implicitly understood about Dana remained true. but through our discussions and test scenes, we were able to define those truths in some really useful ways. it was through this process that we textually solidified Dana as someone who doesn't have cool powers, at least not flashy ones anyway. Dana's weapon is her mind-- the ability to use her razor sharp clarity of perception to act on many different forms of knowledge at once. she's not a mind control person, she's not a seeing all eventualities person, she's just a really smart punch person. Knight of Mind, it turns out, was perfect for her, because she doesn't need it. and that realization was very much why i tried to create a similar dynamic with the rest of the upsilons.
so again we ask, does that not make classpects a useful "writing tool" for me? again i answer, i dunno. i don't really care. it's just the process to me. all of it is just the process.
maybe that points to why i was so free with referring to Rose in short as Seer of Mind in that ask. having reached the endpoint of Rose's role in this story, i finally understand what Seer of Light means for her (in godfeels, at any rate). it's that she saw the truth of how the narrative was changing and accepted that it wasn't for her. as in, she saw the light at the end of the tunnel and chose to walk towards it. it's become a shorthand for Rose, you see? i say "Seer of Light" the way i say the name of a friend who was really more of an acquaintance realistically speaking, like we only hung out a couple times a few years ago, but we hit it off so well every time that i was always like "man, i wish we could hang out all the time, we'd be great friends" but just, for one reason or another, it never quite lined up for that to happen. the name of a beloved missed connection, perhaps...
i guess, basically, to put a bow on this: i try not to think about classpects until the character in question is real enough in my mind that they define it rather than the other way around. once again i have no idea if this makes any kind of sense procedurally or if i'm just making my life harder by being stubborn. but then again, the only writing advice any writer can ever give you is how to write the things they already wrote, so

You can analyze your favourite writers' techniques. You all know that right?
When you read a book or fic or whatever and are blown away by how amazing the writing is you can just go, "huh, how is the writer doing this? what things are they doing to get this effect?"
And if you can't figure it out you are allowed to google it. Check out YouTube videos, blog posts, and the wealth of posts on Tumblr even. If the writer is famous enough there might even be full-length academic papers on Google Scholar or JSTOR, or even 100+ page published books dissecting their style (Tolkien, for example, if you like his style). If you still can't find the information, ask someone. Ask more experienced writers or writers who write in a similar style. Ask writing advice blogs/channels. Ask the writer/author themselves.
And if you still can't figure it out, you can keep trying things and reading similar stuff, observing until it clicks.
I just say this because, well, reading someone else's writing and feeling like yours is horrible in comparison is pretty much a universal writer experience. I see a lot a posts on Tumblr offering encouragement like, "it is okay if you writing isn't like theirs, you just have different strengths," and "actually your writing is better than you think it is, you've just been staring at it too long." And these are valid.
But also, just because you can't write like that now doesn't mean you can't learn. You don't have to resign yourself to a particular style just because it comes easier to you. It is completely okay to be happy with the style you have, but it is also okay to not be happy with it and wish you could write like your favourite writers instead.
Just... when you get that, "oh my gosh, I will never be as good as them," feeling, maybe try figuring out what it is they are doing that you like so much. Maybe being patient with yourself doesn't mean accepting that this is your best work. Maybe it means accepting that this isn't and that it will take time, knowledge, and practice to get there. But you will, you just have to keep trying.

ANYWAY final thing on this. there are no magic bullets with writing — you can’t buy a device then suddenly be writing consistently with no difficulties — but i do think it’s helpful to have something you’re comfortable with which you can pull out and begin immediately writing on & which you can use on the go. it can be an alpha or a phone with a keyboard or a paper notebook but you’re kind of fucking yourself over if you have nothing.
#notebook & pen loop is a nice combo btw#i think the max time it should take you to get from not writing to writing is 3 seconds. tbh.#my personal setup is ipad - notebook - alpha#i used to have a laptop but the startup time was too long and it’s incredibly difficult to use in transit#unsolicited advice: if its an option. do invest in something that works for you#notebook & paper is ofc the cheapest option but its not going to help you if you hate it u know

porch stan/reader (enby) pre/during/post-canon/unspecified hurt/comfort, 2793 words (ship if you squint, but not the focus)
Stan finds you on the back porch of the Mystery Shack hours after he told you to clock out and go home. You’re not on your phone, not nursing a soda… you’re not doing anything. You’re just sitting there on the steps, alone in the dark. He can only see the back of your head from the diamond shape in the door, but your stare extends far beyond the dim glow of the porchlight, ending only at the pitch black of the woods.
He hesitates for a moment, his hand hovering over the doorknob. Stan knows how important it is to be alone. Though he… tolerates you, maybe a little more than an employer should, he wouldn’t know the first thing about offering good company when you're like this. Mainly because he's never seen you like this.
That’s it, then, he decides, slowly lowering his hand from the knob. You wanna mope around on my porch? Go crazy. But count me out.
…
Stan doesn’t move. He watches the back of your head, the tense line of your shoulders, the way some strands of your hair twitch in the weak summer breeze. You inhale, slowly. Then take a deep breath out. Your head hangs a little lower.
Stan twists the doorknob and steps out onto the porch, and ignores the guilt when you jump about five feet in the air.
“Trespassing’s a crime, you know,” he says, once you whip around to blink at him with wide eyes. Stan crosses his arms. “Kidding. You wanna do… whatever this is, inside, or what?”
It takes another moment of stunned silence for you to register his words. The pause is long enough that Stan furrows his brows and wonders where your mind is. You jump again, shaking your head, and he realizes too late that you think he’s glaring at you.
“Oh, no, no, I was just—Sorry. I was just about to leave,” you say, planting your palms on the porch steps and starting to push yourself upwards. Stan uncrosses his arms and waves a hand in the air dismissively.
“Relax,” he says gruffly, and shuts the door behind him before crossing the distance to the porch sofa in two long strides. He lets himself fall onto it with a sigh, the old plush of the cushions sinking dramatically under his weight. You twist in your seat to look at him, surprised. Stan pats the cushion next to him. “Do an old man a favor, huh? Don't make me sit on the stairs.”
You stare at him for another second, searching his expression. Stan nearly breaks out in a sweat trying to act casual as you scan his face, his body language, the hand drawing away from the cushion to leave you room to sit down.
Then you push yourself up, and turn, and shuffle over to the couch to sit on the opposite end of the couch. You linger at the edge, like you might just change your mind. But after a moment, you sigh and scoot backwards so the backs of your knees hit the edge of the cushion.
Stan waits for a moment. Listens to the chirping and buzzing of the woods in all directions, the faint rustle of unseen creatures in the brush. A low whistle sounds from the left. He knows enough to ignore it, and it seems you do, too. The both of you are safe, here on the sofa, in the dim yellow light of the lantern hanging from the porch roof. But… your shoulders are up to your ears. Your mouth is set in a thin, straight line.
“... You okay?” Stan asks finally, the gravel in his voice painfully loud within the bubble of silence surrounding you. He tries not to stare, but he can’t stop himself from taking too many sideways glances at your profile. The downturn of your brow, the tension in your jaw. You take a short breath in. Then you nod, sighing softly.
“Just… thinking,” you say. Your “thinking” is too quiet at the beginning and end, more breath than letters. Stan waits for you to elaborate. When you don’t, he asks,
“Thinking of what?”
Another beat passes. Stan waits again, this time keeping his eyes forward. His hands fold in his lap. He’s trying to give you space.
“I’m, uh…” Stan almost looks at you when you start to speak, but the millisecond he straightens up, your bravado dies down and you trail off. So he relaxes again, best he can, and continues not to look at you. When you start again, you sound grateful. “I’m always… just… going through something.”
He gives you ample time to consider your words. You keep going, slowly, like the syllables are churning together in your mind, like your skull is one of those trucks that mixes cement. You find the syllables one-by-one and put them together with great effort, your voice low with concentration.
“Not like… something is always happening to me. Lately, it’s… nothing is happening to me. But I can’t turn it off. It’s like a radio that just drones on, and on, and on.” You rub your palms on your shorts, over your thighs. Stan can’t tell whether you’re trying to soothe yourself by wiping away your sweat, or imagining there’s a stain on your skin that won’t come out. Your hands pause at your knees and you keep talking. “Sometimes the volume is so low, I can ignore it. It’s just this… really faint humming in the background of everything else, this staticky sound sitting on the top of my head.
“Sometimes the volume is explosive, and I can’t drown it out. It’s too… But, you know, no matter how loud it gets, I can still… function. I might have to cover my ears and close my eyes and hold my breath, but I can do it. I can handle it on my own. But sometimes I’m reading a receipt and my eyes linger on a letter for too long,” your eyes are darting around several spots on the porch, finding grooves in the wood, splinters sticking out, “or my back is turned and I hear someone’s—a customer, a friend, anyone—I hear their footsteps behind me, and it falls in such a normal, nonspecific way and…”
Your knee starts to bounce, but you stop it after a few seconds. You lean forward, forearms on your knees now, your hands clasped together. You speak to the empty space between the decking boards. To the pitch blackness separating you from the cold, damp earth below, the negative space where coins and trash and confessions fall into, never to be seen or heard from again.
“I’m always younger than I am,” you say, your words sinking between the slats of wood. “It's always that night. I'm always in that house. Always in that room. And the ceiling is white. And the door is locked. But the TV is always on.”
Stan doesn’t entirely know what that means. He isn’t supposed to. Even then, there’s an aching familiarity in the gloom of your voice, the added weight to your breath, so he sits with it. He feels like he sinks further into the couch with the pressure forming in his chest, a boulder rolling up the inside of his sternum, to the base of his throat, making it difficult to breathe. He’s imagining a very different house, no doubt. A very different TV.
You sit statue-still on the other end of the couch. You watch your words drip down the edges of the decking boards, and you would almost hear them hit the dirt below if not for the everpresent hum of the forest. You’re surrounded by it. The trees and the brush are all alive, all moving, stalking you from all angles, watching you breathe, waiting for you to move so they can close in and crush you.
Really, you’re safe. Stan knows you’re safe. But he also knows the dread of feeling otherwise, the cold, skin-thin coat of fear creeping across every inch of your body and making your limbs rigid. He knows that sometimes, when the second-skin starts feeling a little too thick, it helps to have someone on the other side.
“Yeah, well. You and me both, kid.” It isn't as comforting as he hopes. He winces, but keeps his gaze forward when you turn your head to look at him. Stan takes a deep breath in and sighs it out, bringing a hand up to scratch the back of his skull. He looks at you.
You look tired. About as tired as he feels on those sleepless nights alone, staring at that dark knot in the ceiling in his room.
It’s a perfect spiral, just there, formed naturally in the wood. Just one of many weird things in this town, he supposes. The only times Stan has ever been tempted to purchase a ladder have been those nights when his brain itched with the need to measure that spiral, to calculate its length, press his finger against the center point and feel the texture of the shape on his skin.
He’s never actually done it. Part of him blames his fear of heights. The rest of him knows it’s because it’s too easy to imagine two other perfect spirals next to it, a practiced triskelion first drawn in childhood notebooks and eventually perfected in the journal he has hidden in the basement. Those nights usually end in him closing his eyes and promising not to open them again until morning, even though the spiral is etched into the backs of his eyelids anyway, glowing fluorescent in the dark recesses of his mind. He would see that spiral so clearly, even if his cataracts clouded his whole sense of vision, even if he lost his vision entirely.
Stan takes in your expression for a moment longer. The exhaustion, paired with the lamp light, adds an unhealthy shadow to your face. Your eyes look a little unfocused, sunken in, and your skin is pale and your lips are chapped. It’s too cold out here, Stan thinks. He knows you wouldn’t accept his suit jacket, so he doesn’t offer. Instead, he tries to offer the smidge of sage, elderly wisdom he’s got. It isn’t much, but it’s more than nothing.
“I can’t tell you I know how to help,” he says, and your brow furrows and your lips purse tightly. Stan keeps his eyes on you, keeps his voice gentle. “What I can tell you is… you’re not alone.”
“What do I do when I feel alone?” you ask suddenly. “What do I do when I feel like I’m the only person in the world who feels this way? And then when I feel stupid and selfish for thinking that, when I know other people have gone through so much worse? What then?”
“You get over it,” Stan says softly. You flinch back like he’d screamed the words at you, and when Stan blinks, you’re leaning far away from him. You blink back at him with wide eyes. It’s the most emotion he’s seen on you all evening, and he tries not to feel like a monster for it. He raises his hands placatingly and explains, “You get over it. As in, you stop kicking yourself when you’re down, and you pick yourself up. You’re not alone and you know it. Even if you are, so what? If no one else is gonna care…”
Stan trails off. You… obviously don’t know what to say to that. Stan rubs the back of his neck, slumping into the couch. He’s bad at this. He’s not great at… emotional stuff. He never learned how to put feelings into words, and whatnot. He was never allowed to.
“You’re not alone,” he says again, struggling against the instinct to backpedal, to tell you everything’s gonna be alright and you just need some sleep. He forces the next words out of his mouth. “You’re not the only person who feels this way. That doesn’t make it a competition, it doesn’t mean you lose. People like us, we drew the short straw. Doesn’t mean we give a trophy to whoever got it worst. It just means we have a little extra work to do—some more than others—to feel a little more okay.”
Your shoulders are slowly, slowly, losing their tension. Your gaze drifts back to the floor of the porch. Stan tries one more time to get his point across.
“When it feels like the world’s out to get you… you can scream. You can break down on the bathroom floor. You can throw kicks and punches and beg for life to give you a break. You can stand in a park and shout for someone to come and rescue you until your throat’s raw and you lose your voice.” Stan’s next breath turns out a little shaky, but he clears his throat and squeezes his hands into fists. Then he flexes them out flat, brushing invisible dust off his knees.
“Eventually, though,” he continues, “you gotta realize the only person guaranteed to hang around you is you. You can feel lonely and dumb and you can cry all you want. Trust me, no one would blame you, but… you can also walk to the store and buy yourself some tissues. Steal a snack off the shelf while you’re there. And you can sit on the curb in the parking lot and tell yourself you deserve to feel better than this, whether or not anyone agrees. Whether or not you believe it.”
When Stan finally shuts up, the forest sounds a little quieter. An unknown species chirps in the distance. Branches of an evergreen tree rustle together. His eyes have adjusted to the darkness by now, and he can see the faint shapes of moths fluttering at the edge of the clearing. He knows they’re not, but a small part of his mind imagines the moths flitting around in a perfect spiral. Privately, he rubs his thumb and forefinger together, imagining the feel of wood grain at his fingertips.
You’re hunched in on yourself, and your lips are still pressed together in thought. You’re not leaning away anymore, but your body language isn’t exactly welcoming. Stan feels nervous sweat gathering in his pits and resists the urge to scratch at them. He thinks he fucked up.
Then you huff, a quiet sound, just a sharp exhale through your nose. You tilt your head to the side and look at him, and Stan’s chest seizes with anxiety and shame, and he’s already taking a breath in to defend himself because you’re laughing at him, but…
“Any tips on skipping the part where I cry?” you ask, a dry sense of humor shining through your flat tone. Stan swallows. Settles down. He chuckles a little, mostly because he’s glad you’re not scolding him for the clumsy mess that was meant to be advice.
“Not unless you wanna lose a staring contest with a high velocity fan every day,” he jokes. It’s not that funny, but you huff again, and the corner of your mouth upturns a little bit. Stan tries for another. “I got a burlap sack you can borrow. That way you can cry in private—in public!”
“What? That’s so dumb,” you laugh, for real this time, one of your hands coming up to cover your mouth. It takes Stan a second to realize he’s grinning at you, despite everything, just sitting there like an idiot and watching you chuckle at two half-jokes. Another joke bakes in his mind: two halves make a whole, or something like that. Luckily, he doesn’t get the chance to say it, because then you’re lowering your hand and leaning over to punch the side of his thigh. It’s light, he barely even feels it, but the gesture makes his whole body feel warm. You smile at him, still tired, still sad, but with a little less weight to the edges. “Hey. Thanks.”
Stan shuffles one foot out to kick yours. He ends up just nudging the side of your shoe with his own, but you don’t move it away. You’re both sitting there, your knuckles against Stan’s pants and his shoe against your shoe, and you’re both just smiling tiredly at each other. Stan wonders if you still feel alone. He hopes you don’t. He won’t ask.
“No problem,” he says instead, and you huff out a laugh that’s softer than the others. You press the back of your hand just a little harder to the outside of Stan’s leg, as if assuring yourself that he’s there, that he’s with you, at least in this moment.
The forest surrounding you is not silent, but it’s quiet.

I think my biggest pet peeve in media, especially in movies where this is by FAAAAR the most prevalent, is when an actual cool/emotional moment is undercut by an unnecessary ass joke.
This is the most frequent in kids and superhero movies, and it pisses me off SO much in both. Kids aren’t stupid, they can let a moment resonate. For example, I can’t think of an example from either Inside Out movie of this happening. Compare this to the recently released Moana 2 ( which I did enjoy, for the record ) where there were multiple moments I groaned because a stupid joke was made that actively took away from a scene.
TDLR; Let your moments sit and resonate, the audience isint stupid, and shoving a joke into a serious moment only devalues everything you’re trying to achieve

Yesterday's episode were great I wonder what today's episodes will bring...
HE'S HERE!!! TAURUS IS HERE! EVERYONE PANIC! let's see how badly this ends....
Surprisingly well actually.
The music in this episode was also really good. I usually don't pay attention to the background music, but the music in this episode was really good it kinda reminded me of Walking Dead mixed with Last of Us. I'm not sure if that was the intent, but it works really well I feel for this situation.
Taurus is obviously menacing, but he's also oddly calm. Not what I expected from a destroyer of worlds. He says he's just here to observe Lunar and the others and decided if Lunar and probably the whole world should live.
I ain't gonna lie, I don't have hope for this world.
Taurus is gonna take one look at the whole place and decided everyone is better off dead. Which will probably lead to some kinda of Astrals civil war or Nexus showing up and whooping Taurus and the others Astrals behinds and Lunar having to step in and save the Astrals. But that's a pipe dream I guess. We'll have to wait and see.
I can. Nebula isn't a big fan of Taurus, and he clearly isn't a big fan of her. The way he talks to her, I get she's just the messager, but she's still a person. Taurus is gonna be observing everyone and his next stop his Sun and Moon, and I don't have high hopes for what he'll say or think of them. Him and the other Astrals know about Nexus and his little stunt with star power. Sun, Moon, you guys better have a good space lawyer. I know Earth plans to befriend Taurus and make things easier on Lunar, but I have a feeling Taurus isn't the friend making type.
Gemini did say Taurus would threaten Lunar's family to get a reaction out of him. Taurus, I swear to gosh! If you hurt any of them.
Also, I think it's a matter of time until Earth runs into Nebula again, and if she does, I hope she can convince Nebula to help them with EVERYTHING going on.
We'll have to wait and see.
Now, let's see what Sun and Moon are up to maybe they'll have a calmer episode today...

Guess that saying was right for Nexus (Not really but still)
Solar tries to reason with Nexus and even says he can help him come back to the family, and Nexus just laughs! He starts spouting off all these lies about the family, like how Lunar never cared about him. He did! That Earth was just trying to fill the void cause her dad didn't love her. Earth still believed the creator loved her at that time, so that's a lie! And that Sun never cared and just took pity on Nexus. Nexus, you dense mother.... Nexus, you are just a terrible person. Knock off the oc act and get a life! Seeing as how you lost the one you had. I mean, you'll probably get yourself killed soon anyways so what's the point. But we probably should worry. Someone pointed out to me that Nexus could be a part of Rez's plan, and it's definitely looking like it. Maybe Dark Sun is Rez's master or at least is in league with Rez and his boss. I feel so bad for everyone here. (And I kinda feel bad for Nexus.... but not by a lot.) I more pity Nexus cause one day I hope he'll realize that he lost the BEST thing that ever happened to him and will never get it back and I hope he dies knowing that.
I more so feel bad for Sun and Solar.
Solar already had to kill his Moon once... and now he has to do it again. And Sun sounded so shocked and saddened when Solar suggested they kill Nexus. Nexus/New Moon was the Moon who actually showed he cared for sun. And he did at one point, but now he can't even say Sun's name without wanting to gag! Oof.
This is just sad all around.
And now they have Nexus, Taurus, and Creator after them.... LOVELY!
This is all going to boiling over and culminate in some crazy Infinity war level poo I hope.
And now, it's a less sad one but still equally as worrying.
Puppet and Solar reunite! Yay! At least one of his reunions went well today.
Puppet filled in Solar to everything that has happened. Gosh, that must have been fun. This is like the second time someone has had to explain to him what's been happening since he's been dead.
Solar gave Puppet some advice on what to do about Eclipse, and Sun gave her some advice on what to do about the other Sun and Moon. I hope their advice works. Puppet expressed at the very end of the episode her wish to leave this new dimension and return to the old one.... Puppet...
WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST STAY IN THE OTHER DIMENSION THEN?!
Puppet, you left that universe to protect everyone from Puppeteer. Now, I'm not sure what the deal with Puppeteer is now. He's been weakened cause Puppet herself has been weakened, but there is still the risk of him coming back. Are you really gonna take that chance, Puppet?
Also, Puppet, you uprooted your entire family's life to go here. You don't have that apartment anymore! You can't just decide to move to a whole other universe and bond to said universe only to decide to leave it after what 3 weeks?
Yes, I know Foxy chose to go with her, and he could have chosen not to but did, but still, you can't just decide to ditch when the going gets tough Puppet, you stick it out and ride the waves till it all calms. I hope everything works out for Puppet and Eclipse and hope Sun and Solar's advice to her works. Also, sorry if it seems like I hate Puppet's character, I don't. I love her character and this flaw of hers. I'm just being critical.

Number one worst reason to kill off a character in media:
They've completed their character arc/fulfilled their narrative purpose.
Second worse character to kill off a character in media:
To make a point/shock value.
Reason these are bad reasons to do so:
To begin with? It's extremely easy to make both ring extremely hollow, especially on the rewatch, and runs a high risk of feeling cheap. There's also the fact that, if you do this once it can feel jarring and out of place, but if you keep doing it then it risks numbing the readers/viewers to other characters and the overall story. After all, why get invested in a character who could die out of nowhere for no reason and with no narrative satisfaction?
Also, once a character is dead? That's it, no more, their story is generally over, meaning you have one less potential tool in your box for telling the remaining story, and it's always good to have a few cards up your sleeve for later use. Every character and setting is an opportunity, something that you've worked hard to create and get the viewers/readers invested in. Kill or destroy them, and that's the last bit of use to be had from that investment, and often a new character or setting will be needed to replace the one that's gone now, and that the viewer/reader will need to get invested in, and that will get harder to achieve each time it's done.
I'm not saying that no one should ever die in any story ever - that would obviously be bad writing advice. More, if a main/prominent character dies, then it should have weight. It should open new ways to view the characters who knew the one who died, how they interact with the world, possibly even the world itself if they were important enough in their setting. A nameless mook can be tossed aside with little thought, a character who's known fairly well but isn't a main protagonist or antagonist is generally quite good to use if you absolutely need to make a point or have an abrupt tone shift (though it should still be handled with care), but a main protagonist or antagonist, who's been around for an extended period? Unless there's been one heck of a build-up and/or has an extensive narrative pay-off? Leave that sucker alive. Put them in jail, send them off on a solo quest, stick 'em in a coma, heck, create a situation that's vague about whether or not they survived, you don't have to keep them in the story, just keep them in the setting.
And yes, of course there are the exceptions to this, where character death is frequent and anyone being vulnerable to it is the norm, but it's not something that can be supported by most stories or genres.

Writing Disability: Let us Love like everyone else

Romance is one of the top-selling genres in the world across mediums, and pretty much every movie, TV show, book and game has at least one romance sub-plot. You don’t need to look far to find it. However, when it comes to disabled characters, a lot of creators shy away from giving us romantic plot lines or even hesitate to address the topic of disability and attraction being present in the same character at all. So, since it’s Valentine’s day, I thought now would be the perfect time to discuss it.
It can be easy to miss if you aren't paying attention, but a surprising number of stories in various mediums will pair up most if not all of their main cast of characters by the end of the plot… with the exception of the disabled characters. whether they be explicitly stated to be disabled or just coded as such, disabled characters are more frequently left out of relationships by the story's end. Sometimes, the disabled character will be completely disinterested or the subject is just never addressed, such as with Toph from Avatar the Last Airbender. Toph is implied to have had multiple relationships by the time of the sequel series, but unlike the rest of the original gang, we never see it on screen, so I personally think it doesn't count for reasons I'll get into in a moment. Alternatively, the disabled character will show interest in someone, but their affection is just not reciprocated, such as in Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame. Disney's Hunchback is a particularly noteworthy example since it's one of the only theatrical Disney movies where the main character has a clearly stated love interest, but doesn't end up with them by the end.

In the latter case, where the disabled character’s love is not reciprocated, these stories will often focus on the importance of self-discovery and self-love. An important message to be sure, but the fact that these “you don’t need a partner as long as you love yourself” stories very often centre disabled characters is frustrating, to say the least (If the character isn’t disabled, they’re often deemed “undesirable" for other reasons, such as being fat, but that’s a topic for another day).
Of course, the reason the character doesn’t end up with their love interest doesn't have to be because of their disability specifically. Even if they were turned down for other reasons, it can still contribute to the stereotype that disabled people can’t find love even when they want to, just aren’t desirable as partners (a sentiment that is especially commonly directed at visibly disabled people) and contributes to the overall lack of representation of disabled relationships.
In the other case I mentioned before, where a disabled character is just not interested in romance, can look different depending on the kind of disability the character has, but in my experience, it often comes from the same place: discomfort. This isn't necessarily a conscious thought or decision on the creator’s end, mind you, but just because it's not intentional, doesn't mean it's not doing harm, even if it’s subconsciously.
A lot of the time, many creators don't even consider giving their disabled characters a love interest. the thought never even occurs to them. I can't pretend to know why for sure, but if I had to take a guess, its because the idea of disability and romance just don't go together in most people's eyes, so the thought never even crosses these creator's minds. But why? it comes back to that discomfort.
When we are talking about physical disabilities and those effecting the body but not the brain, the discomfort can come from a few places. First is the discomfort with disabled and visibly different bodies and how they work as a whole. I've spoken about this in the past, but just the idea of disability alone often makes non-disabled people deeply uncomfortable, and when it comes to visible disabilities, they are often forced to confront that, something that a lot of people are resistant to. they don't like thinking about it, and while many non-disabled creators have dealt with this discomfort enough to include us in their stories, they haven't deconstructed it enough to include us having things like romantic relationships.
This is why, despite the fact that Toph has children in The Legend of Korra, I’m still using her as an example. We see the other main character’s relationships and partners in the original show and in The Legend of Korra directly, but never hers. The most we ever hear of Toph’s love life is that Sue and Lin, her daughters, have different fathers. While the mention was good, when looking at this through the lens of “people are uncomfortable with disabled people being in relationships” you can see how the openly disabled character’s relationships only ever happening off screen and occasionally mentioned might still be an issue, even if that wasn’t the creator’s intent.

this disparity becomes particularly noticeable, however, in media aimed at an older audience where romantic relationships often mean sex. When the relationship is expected to be sexual in nature, an extra layer of discomfort often appears. A lot of people just quite simply don't understand how sex works when you have a physical disability, and are extremely uncomfortable simply looking it up (there are educational resources out there on the subject, and even disability content creators who focus on educating people about sex and disability, I’m not talking about looking up porn). Often times, they just avoid it by simply not giving their disabled characters relationships of any kind to avoid having to address those questions.
There is also the fact that many people infantilise those with disabilities and associate us with children. This is more common when it comes to non-physical disabilities, such as those under the neurodivergent umbrella (which refers to any disability that primarily impacts the brain) and I'll talk about that in a moment, but it does happen with physical disabilities too, most notably with little people and disabilities that impact someone’s height or physical development. Often, for those of us with physical disabilities, the infantilization comes from people either directly associating us with children because of our appearance, or feeling as though we need to be protected like children.
When talking about disabled people in relationships, this might look like someone being hesitant to pair a disabled character up with someone without a disability because they “can’t protect themselves” if the relationship goes bad. This isn’t something I’ve seen stated directly much in media, mind you, but it is a response I’ve gotten from a surprising number of people in real life when I’ve asked why they don’t like the idea of “people like me” (meaning amputees and wheelchair users) dating. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the reason some authors and creatives avoid inter-abled relationships in their works based on how often I got that comment when I started dating; they are concerned about the power imbalance. but this mindset is based on both infantilization and the stereotype that physically disabled people are always inherently weaker. If you’re not always worried about how non-disabled characters would protect themselves in a relationship, why are you only worried it when one of the characters is disabled?
However, like I mentioned before, the disabled character being simply uninterested in romance or sex isn't unique to visibly and physically disabled people. It’s is so common with neurodivergent folks, in fact that it’s become a bunch of tropes all of their own, with the most common variant being where specifically autistic or autistic-coded characters will often be the only aromatic or asexual people in a story’s cast.
For those unfamiliar with the terms, aromatic people are those who experience little to no romantic attraction, or those who experience it differently to most, while asexual people are those who experience little to no sexual attraction (or, again, experience it differently to most). It’s a bit more complex than that, and both terms exist on a spectrum, but in order not to get too side-tracked, I’ll leave it there. I‘d highly, highly recommend Jaiden Animation’s video on the subject though if you want to learn more in a beginner-friendly way.
There’s this idea that a lot of non-disabled people get about neurodivergent folks, especially those with developmental or intellectual disabilities, that we are these sweet little innocent beans who don’t want to or simply can’t engage with “adult” things. In most cases though, this isn’t the true. For some folks, including many creators, this is once again an unconscious bias and is the result of them simply not thinking about or deconstructing their ideas around different kinds of disabilities. In these cases, the idea usually stems from the fact that there are some (keyword some) disabilities under this category that do impact someone’s ability to engage with things like sex and romantic relationships, and most people not overly familiar with the disability community just don’t know enough to understand that just because some people under this category can’t or don’t want to engage, doesn’t mean we all can’t.
Unfortunately though, when this is pointed out to a lot of people, instead of adjusting their viewpoint or seeking more information, they get severally uncomfortable about the idea, even going so far as calling someone who is dating someone with a developmental or intellectual disability as “creepy” because they, once again, associate people with these kinds of disabilities with children. Since children can’t consent, neither can we. This is, once again, infantilization, but much more directly.
While I haven’t seen the full episode (or much of the show as a whole), so I don’t really want to comment on weather it handled the subject well, I do at least appreciate that the show Glee calls this line of thinking out when one of the characters, Becky, who has down’s syndrome, begins dating someone without a disability. The parts of the episode I have seen shows several characters around Becky expressing concern, but their bias is called out by the end of the episode. What I have seen of Glee was during a particularly long stay in hospital while being given pretty strong medication so my memory of it is spotty (not to mention everything was out of order) so like I said, I can’t comment on weather or not it was good per say, but I do remember the discussion this episode sparked in my high school with students and teachers alike, and I remember it being the starting point for some important conversations with people.
As I said, there are some disabilities under the neurodivergent umbrella that might prevent a character from engaging in a romantic or sexual relationship. some. however, it's incredibly important to remember that a lot of these kinds of disabilities exist on a spectrum of support needs, and if the character in question's disability would be preventing them from doing so, they would typically be on the very severe ends of those spectrums and have very substantial support needs in other areas of life too. The vast majority of neurodivergent characters in media don't fall into this category. If you are writing someone who has these higher support needs (and please do, we need more characters like that!), be sure to do your research and double check your assumptions about their capability to engage though. Ensure it's actually reflective of their disability and isn't just based on stereotypes and misinformation. And don't forget, if you’re ever unsure, you can always check with a sensitivity reader or disability consultant.
Even in cases where a disabled character does get into a relationship, one of a few things frequently happen that I think authors might want to be mindful to avoid - or at least approach with caution.
The first is that the disabled character, despite being in a relationship, will be completely disinterested in sex (or any part of a physical relationship, such as kissing, if the content is aimed at a younger audience), often being implied or directly stated to be asexual. The first example of this that springs to mind for me is Sheldon Cooper from the Big Bang Theory. While Sheldon is never confirmed as autistic within the show, he displays many autistic traits throughout both the original show (albeit in a stereotypical way that’s played mostly for laughs) and in the spin-off, Young Sheldon. When Sheldon does eventually get into a relationship though and even gets married, he is shown to be very, very reluctant and overall disinterested in sex.

So what’s the problem with this? in a vacuum, nothing. Some people don’t care for sex and don’t experience sexual attraction, and it’s fine to show that - we need more ace representation! I myself am disabled (an amputee and autistic) and asexual, shouldn’t I be glad to see characters like me?
Well, the issue isn’t that this is unrealistic, but rather overplayed and often contains a lot of misinformation about both asexual people and disabled folks.
My disabilities have nothing to do with my asexuality - which remember just means someone doesn’t experience sexual attraction; it has nothing to do with weather or not someone enjoys sex. However whenever asexuality and disability are paired together in the same character, it’s almost always because of the character’s disability. As in, the person in the wheelchair is ace because they can’t feel anything down there so they stopped feeling attracted to people (which is not even close to how that works, but is a real example I’ve seen on a few occasions now) or the autistic person is just too invested in telling you about trains, science, superhero’s or whatever their special interest is, to be worried about sex.
The other issue is, like I said, there’s a lot of examples of disabled ace characters already, and considering how poorly most are handled, many disabled people and asexual people alike are just tired of seeing it. Honestly, until both disability and ace representation and understanding as a whole, improve independently, it’s a combination of identities I’d recommend avoiding in your work, at least for now.
Finally, when a disabled character does enter a relationship, sexual or not, a very common dynamic is that the character will often get very insecure and scared that the person they’re dating doesn’t actually like them, or worries that the other person is settling for them, often resulting in their partner reassuring them that they love them, "despite their disability." A recent example of this can be seen in the web series Helluva boss between the character Fizzarolli, an imp who is a quadrilateral amputee with broken horns and facial scarring, and his boyfriend Asmodeus. While Fizzarolli’s insecurities are primarily focused on living up to impossible standards for success, he shouts during a panic attack that he believes that Asmodeus will leave him if he isn't successful, stating that without it, "this is who I am" - ripping off his hat to show his broken horns and scars (something we are told that he acquired in the same accident he lost his limbs in).

My problem with scenarios like these is once again, not that it’s unrealistic, but that it shows up constantly. The intention with these kinds of scenes is often to assure the character and by extension, disabled readers or viewers, that they are in fact deserving of love. That just because they’re disabled, doesn’t mean they’ll never find anyone. Once again, it's a good message, however, because of how prevalent this exact scene is, it can actually have the opposite effect.
Let’s step back from disability for a moment: If you see dozens and dozens of people with a feature you have, saying they are insecure about that same feature in almost all of of the shows you watch, the books you read, the games you play where characters with this feature appear, even if you aren’t insecure about it yourself, seeing over and over again that others are, it’s natural that it would start to make you doubt or wonder if you should be. Doubly so if that very insecurity prompts these big, often explosive and emotional scenes.
This was the case for me as a kid, I never really cared much about my disability outside of being annoyed that people stared at me, but as I got older, and I saw more and more characters in the media I consumed saying they were certain no one could love someone like them - someone like me - I became more and more worried. The messages that were supposed to be reassurances, instead told me over and over that the people these characters ”found” were the exception, not the rule, and that most people would, in fact, care that I was disabled and not want to date me. When all my friends began dating and getting into relationships, I began to worry that I would never find “my exception to the rule” and be alone forever.
I didn’t really get over that mindset until well into my 20’s, well into my current relationship with my now fiancé, and I know I wasn’t alone in these concerns. I used to work with teenage amputees, and this was a very, very common fear across all genders and sexualities. I still see it in forums and social media groups whenever newly disabled people join, it’s one of the more common fears brought up, and while I get that scenes like these are meant to reflect this reality and help, more often than not, they’re doing the opposite.
For once, I would love to see a disabled character get into a relationship, and for there not to be any mention of “are you sure?” “How could you ever love someone like me?” “I’m worried you don’t actually find me attractive” etc. These conversations are realistic, yes, but we see them so often that I just really wish I could see more examples of stories where the validity of the disabled character’s relationship is never questioned and is never a concern. It just is.
Of course, as with most of the subjects I’ve talked about before, many of these points are less of a concern if you have multiple disabled characters. If you only have one disabled character and have their love interest reject them, it can perpetuate these stereotypes about disabled people being unable to find love, but if you have another character who is successful in that reguard? Well, it’s much less of a concern. The same goes for if one of your disabled characters is asexual or aromantic, but there’s another disabled character who isn’t, or if one disabled character is insecure about their disability in their relationship, but another isn’t.
Of course, be mindful not to go too far in the other direction either. A lot of people are pretty shocked to learn that disability fetishization is also a thing, and while you shouldn’t shy away from showing disabled characters in sexual relationships just because they’re disabled, it is something you need to be mindful of if your story contains more explicit content. As a general rule of thumb, sowing your disabled characters engaging in the same kinds of relationships, romantic and sexual (including casual hook-ups and one-night-stands) is great, so long as it a) fits the character and the story, and b) is actually inline with how you’re treating those topics with the non-disabled characters.
Personally, I don’t really feel like I’m the best person to advise on where exactly that line between just showing disabled people in sexual relationships/situations and fetishisation is, though the general advice I’ve heard is to ask yourself if the focus is on the disability, or if the person just happens to be disabled. On that same note, I’m also not really comfortable explaining details of how sex works when you’re disabled. If you want to know about either of these topics, there are a plethora of disability content creators who focus specifically on those subjects.
To sum this all up though, disabled adults are, well, adults, so don’t be afraid to treat us as such. Show us in relationships where the non-disabled partner’s affection isn’t a matter of debate or insecurity, show us being intimate and having sex (if that’s something you were doing with your non-disabled characters), let us be confident in those relationships, the same as everyone else, and most importantly, remember that a disability doesn’t automatically mean someone just won’t be interested in us, or we won’t be interested in them.

whats the best pick up line for each quadrant?
There's not any, because pickup lines are unarguably bad, in any scenario, so unless you're are already horns over heels for some dipshit those kids of things will never work.
That being said, I'm going to share a list of pickup lines anyway because I'm nothing if not good at my fucking job. Just be aware they aren't good and you shouldn't use these unless your intention is to get someone to fuck off faster than you can blink.

if any of you notice i’m starting to become more silent and is not because i have nothing to say (i love chatting and being social) but as of late my box is only filled with negativity, there’s nothing positive, nothing worth replying to and spread to the net.
due to these messages and the fact that there’s nothing good, i’m losing the battle of staying around and continuing writing. perhaps that’s the goal here? run me off? maybe i’m not a good writer. i genuinely don’t understand but — im trying to push pass it. so far nothing is working. spread love to your writers., and talk to them, they are real people, not a robot.
