Escape from harsh reality

Good books for me are an escape from reality and into other ppl’s( who r now my ppl) drama. I laugh with them I cry with them even though sometimes they leave me staring at the wall because of some random plot twist I did not see coming. As far book recs go, many are often unappreciated heavily. You may or may not have heard these before but I personally will never stop recommending these istg.

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder-Holly Jackson- a beautiful murder mystery. Mature 11 year olds can handle it. My first mystery series( that was not not Enid ablution) book that I ever read and I fell in love with Ravi

Divergent-Veronica Roth- The first 2 books of the three were pretty decent but then I hated the ending of the third book which kinda ruined the series for me but still a great book

Twin Crowns- Katherine Weber and Catherine Doyle- amazing book it’s about witchcraft probably mature 11 year old + few hot scenes but none too spicy

Heroes Of Olympus- I mean it’s a pretty decent continuation of pjo I personally found the first book boring ,cuz guess why -no Percy .( Spoiler alert ahead)( like if u agree )I bond with everyone who cried when Percabeth fell into Tartarus and sorta boycotted the series for 2 years weeks in their memory cuz poor 12 year old me thought they died. I heard so many good things about it and then i read it and i was like... ur kidding. the concept it's interesting but the execution??? the protagonist??? no. just no. I don't even remember half the book but i do remember disliking it very strongly lmao.

Hi, thanks for replying to me.

0.5 of all, I love the style of the artist we’re speaking of above. It’s the subject matter and its meaning that I side-eye.

First, I now see that this is a dream fancast and total overhaul of Alicent’s character for the sake of a ship between her and Rhaenyra, because otherwise this ship has no real, psychologically realistic, or substantial bearing. I do not just “dislike” Rhaenicient as if the ship were not to my personal taste and it is a meaningless ship. I believe that show completely fails to show us how the two girls were ever mutually attracted to each other even platonically.

Second, I still want to say that I am not talking about the artist appropriating, or what I sarcastically call “appropriating” to highlight the hypocrisy of such a situation the image presents. I am not in the business of saying real people are appropriating fictional characters’ culture.

I speak of the hypothetical situation and vision, the symbolic meaning and impression the image is making. The hypothetical situation where Alicent of all the people we know, would ever be willing to marry anyone in a Valyrian wedding. I am speaking of the character of the show.

I find this funny and character-defying because Show!Alicent has shown us what she thinks about Valyrian customs (meanwhile the Faith allows first cousin marriages…..which is also incest). Show!Alicent is already a different and reduced character in comparison to the original. And Show!Her doesn’t trust or seem to like dragons, even before she has kids (episode 1 is the beginning and adding it to how she reacts to dragons in episode 6).

She is very devout to the Faith of the Seven and devotes herself even more after her attack to perform public penance. Before she married Viserys, she encourages Rhaenyra to pray with her, her own way to feel closer to her long dead mother.

So, I am saying that if Alicent ever were to wholeheartedly and willingly marry in a Valyrian wedding instead of her Faith, it would be either because she turned into a completely different person (as you mention with the fancasting) or that she thought to just be pragmatic and use the symbolism as her entering into the Targaryens and becoming one of them, their big supporter, for the new public image for herself and her kids.

Thirdly, I have seen a lot of Rhaenicient fans who are anti-Targ or anti-black (because there tends to be a lot of overlap, not talking about you specifically) imply and say that they prefer Alicent over Rhaenyra because Rhaenicient allows Rhaenyra to not act as “an evil, power-hungry, deatructive Targ” yet continue on to use Rhaenyra’s Targness to make Alicent look cooler. Many Rhaenicent-shippers do hate Valyrians and their practices and use Rhaenyra as a symbolic prop in their shipping of her and Alicent. (Check out what I say about a Culture Appropriation below)

Now because the Targs are the ones in power and their Valyrian customs are not generally known or available to the Westerosi, Alicent would not be appropriating Valyrian culture– not as that term is defined and recognized. You would be correct there. Again I do not claim that the artists or charater’s are appropriating, but I definitely was not clear about that.

Cultural Appropriation’s Definition

Cultural appropriation doesn’t have to be intentionally or consciously malicious for the future. It is about more about the results and privileged power taking advantage of their privilege to obtain even more privilege and power.

The appropriater is part of a group that both historically and currently benefits from the systematic oppression of the target group. Examples are TikTok dances of black people popularly thought of as having been a white TiKToker’s style, etc. Or how a certain subset of gothic fashion really came from an Indian heritage that some British peoples adopted into their own style (Victorian era). Or white people painting their faces and going to a game where their favorite team, the “Redskins” will play–meanwhile actual indigenous groups of the U.S. are still living in poorer conditions on reservations and don’t receive a cent of the game proceeds (not that they would want to). It is Stephanie Meyer using Quileute myths to create her native characters, inject stories that do not exist in the original native religion and therefore creating an impression in uneducated readers that certain made up stories really do exist in the original, making her native characters psychologically subservient to the main characters, and Meyer herself profiting from it all without either permission, credit, or the face to give money back to the original tribe. Despite them having to scrounge up funds to move their amenities away from flood zones (still going on btw).

Appropriation can have a group use the aesthetics, some dances, certain words, etc and use them for themselves, promote them copying these things as if they made it up. They either did not do this with the permission of the travel group or didn’t not bother to openly credit them as being the ones to be the ones who have done the thing. And thus they get to reap the material benefits from that style, etc. becoming more popular.

What this does is to further widen an already existing economic and psychological gap between the appropriate and the appropriated. It makes it easier to deny that some systematic oppressions an segregation even exists because we do not get to see the original group/creator/culture and the dark quality of that taking.

What this Means for the Rhaenicent Art and Fanfiction

I sarcastically say that there is appropriation going on because the artist is totally ignoring context and the mortally opposing characters of Alicent vs Rhaenyra. It is about that divide being ignored for the sake of something self contradictory.

I just want to be clear again. Alicent is not appropriating. The artist is not appropriating a fictional culture’s images in whom’s oppression they are participating in. But the artist is using that fictional culture and image to create something that really, in the end, diminishes characterization. Doesn’t make them an evil person and it’s actually not as “deep” as appropriation, but it’s very jarring. Which I emotionally distance myself from with sarcasm and hyperbole.

Regarding Socrates and Plato, I FEEL YOU. But I think most philosophers are quite annoying. Socrates basically goading the jury, asking to be sentenced to death, and sending away his wife& kids in favour of drinking and philosophising with his buddies in his final moments is unintentionally very hilarious to me.

going to have to say that no, twilight is that bad. mind you i last read it when i was nine and have held a grudge ever since but it’s just like... very mormon. all of the characters are insanely insufferable for the weirdest reasons. and it’s very boring for what is supposed to be this great forbidden romance. that’s all without talking about the actual problematic content like the weird abuse hype and extremely anti-indigenous people storytelling, but again... mormon vibes. it is funny on accident though i’ll give it that

oh, i have no beef with handmaid’s tale really! i mean the tv show yes but certainly not the book. i just think it gets enough praise as it is and i like to point people towards other atwood works. i’ve never expressly set out to read her poetry- i do like poetry but i’m rarely in the mood to look for it- but what i’ve come across i’ve liked. she’s a very compelling writer. really i’ve only read a couple of her novels and then shorter stories like surfacing, which is a good book but not one i enjoyed reading. i don’t do well with very ‘weird’ psychological/ambiguously supernatural prose.

yeah, i have little patience for philosophers who can’t write. a lot of them have very strong ideas but express them in incomprehensible ways. legal philosophy was far worse in terms of jargon though. i’d say you are correct that most philosophers are very annoying, no matter how good their ideas are- it sort of comes with the territory of being an Intellectual w no other job.

fangirl just... i don’t like whatever that style of YA writing is called, and the protagonist was very, very annoying. i am a huge fan of flawed characters, but when the narrative persists in pretending said characters are actually flawless angels and/or they’re surrounded by people who put up w their shit for no reason without complaint, i can’t put up with it. see: all of the netflix original style movies with deranged protagonists like the kissing booth or sierra burgess or whatever.

also!! hello! i feel i know basically nothing abt u lol, so tell me 10 things abt urself (some random, some basic lol whatever u want) (this is v lame ik but also i am curious)

Okay, so, 10 things about me.

1. I have 3 scars and they’re all from scratches. One on my finger from when I accidentally jammed it against a soap dispenser and scratched it pretty good (might post pictures of that one if anyone cares lol) and 2 on my knees from when I fell off my scooter and scraped them. I’m really insecure about those ones because one of my friends joked that it looked like I’d been in a bad BDSM accident and it just stuck with me. I really really hate them, haha.

2. I just started learning to play guitar a month ago. So far the only song I can play well is Taylor’s version of Drops of Jupiter (the same that she did during the Speak Now tour)

3. I prefer real books to ebooks. I like the way they smell and the way they feel in my hands, but more than anything I like the ability to put my phone down. Real books can’t give you notifications, and that’s very relaxing for me.

4. I was a ballroom dancer for 4 years. This means that I know how to dance like a Disney princess and so when you see me dancing like a tube man with rabies that is a choice and you should mind your own business.

5. I have naturally curly hair. Think Taylor in debut era, but with more polish on my good days.

6. I have a super unhealthy sleep schedule. I could fix it, because I know the psychology tricks that would help me break the habit, but I’m missing step 1. Meaningful motivation.

7. I make moodboards in my spare time. I don’t really post them on here but sometimes I just get these feelings so visceral that I have to either write them in the form of poetry or visualize them in moodboards. I feel like moodboards are a lesser artform than my poetry though because they aren’t something I’ve made from scratch. I’m very insecure about that kind of thing.

8. I usually say my favorite color is blue when people ask but actually my favorite color is wine red because I think I look really good in it. I just say blue because I like every shade of blue and I only really like a few shades of red.

9. I have a whole sideblog for my other fandoms because I never know if I’m annoying people with them on here. I’ve kind of been ignoring it for the past week though, which has weirdly made me really happy. It’s also why you’ve probably seen a couple of Twilight posts on here.

10. I haven’t been into Twilight since I was 14 but one of my friends told me she was watching one of the movies because she was sad so I rented the movie and watched it too bc solidarity and now I’m obsessed with Twilight again but not in the way that I think everybody else is??? I’m more obsessed with the idea than the actual story. I think Stephanie Meyer did a lot of truly garbage things in those books but I’m attached to a very OOC version of the characters and I think Robert Pattinson is a good person. I could go into way more detail but people probably don’t want to hear about it and if they do...I guess they’ll ask, lol.
