The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) announced an initiative yesterday proposing major changes to various State Parks throughout Florida.
Today, with only one week's notice, FDEP announced public meetings throughout the state scheduled for 3 p.m. on Tuesday, August 27th. The meetings will consist of a presentation and an opportunity for public comment, but with only an hour allotted, they do not appear to include a question-and-answer period.
To voice your concerns about these proposals and the lack of public participation, send your customizable email to the Governor, the Secretary of FDEP, and your state representatives. Adding your connection to Florida's State Parks in the email can help them understand how important this issue is to you, their constituent.
if you are able to make it to one of these, i strongly recommend you do. otherwise please send a message. we dont need fucking golf and pickleball in our already threatened natural areas

they banned ap psych in florida cuz the class ap discusses sexuailty and gender which violates ron desantis' piece of shit dont say gay law so fuck you ron for that
in the college board statement they say it was banned because "teaching foundational content on sexual orientation and gender identity is illegal under state law" which is bullshit because these gov leaders believe anything lgbtq is a brain disease so you'd think theyd keep the brain learning class
they banned ap african american studies because "it lacks educational value and historical accuracy" which is making it easier for them to erase black history that is so intertwined with the history of this country that most everything here is so deeply antiblack
this mf has his head so far up his ass that hes ruining our education system even more than it already was

i looked up the current candidates for the 2024 presidential election in the usa and it is. really fucking bleak.
democrats:
joe biden - current president. doing...ok. he's pro trans rights and has been doing some good stuff to fight climate change, but he's like a hundred years old and
robert f kennedy jr - seems to have decent opinions on a lot of policy, but thinks that chemicals in the water are making kids transgender and has suggested that covid is a conspiracy by ashkenazi jews and chinese people
marianne williamson - anti vaxxer apparently, also i guess thinks love is the only thing that will defeat trump
republicans:
ryan binkley - conservative pastor that thinks marriage is "between one man and one woman", anti choice, wants to Build A Wall
doug burgum - republican governor that has actively passed anti trans legislation, anti regulation (unless what you're regulating is trans people ig????)
chris christie - is apparently opposed to bans on gender affirming care, but vetoed a bill allowing trans people to change their gender marker, anti choice
ron desantis - i feel like i don't need to explain
larry elder - denies systemic racism and wants police to be harder on crime, anti crt and dei, pretty solidly anti trans
nikki haley - anti choice, extremely anti trans, anti immigrant, supports israel while also having an evangelical pastor who has a history of antisemitism and racism and queerphobia open for one of her events
will hurd - doesn't seem too horrendous, not noticeably anti trans, but supports 15 week abortion ban
asa hutchinson - great value brand trump
perry johnson - was republican candidate for governor of michigan but was disqualified due to fraudulent ballot signatures
mike pence - yeah
vivek ramaswamy - "anti wokeism", would pass a law requiring teachers to disclose to parents if they found out their kid is trans, supports bans on gender affirming care, wants to end sanctuary cities and address mental health through "faith based approaches", hedge fund bro
tim scott - said that america is not a racist country and the biggest problem facing black people is "fatherlessness incentivized by welfare", opposes same sex marriage and gender affirming care and thinks democrats are using school to "indoctrinate children"
corey stapleton - montana secretary of state, couldn't find much abt him
donald trump - donald trump
independent
cornel west (green party) - seems really cool actually but two party system will fuck him over
i hate the two party system so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
also congrats to the dems for yet another milquetoast kennedy, and congrats to the republicans for having the most racially diverse list of racist and transphobic candidates!!!

I’ve heard comparisons to various kinds of regimes that we could expect of the upcoming shitstorm. Do we have any idea of which one is most likely? I’ve heard everything from India to Franco’s Spain…
I mean to be clear I have no idea, no inside track, just kinda a gut feeling?
I think we have a range from Netanyahu to Putin on the illiberal "Democracy" scale, I hope we land on Netanyahu where elections are still possible and unseating him is hard but doable. In a Netanyahu like scenario the illiberal leader floods the zone with propaganda, radicalizes his supporters, attacks free media and demonizes political opponents as dangerous to the nation. But elections themselves remain free and fair its just the public discourse thats been corrupted and the leader is very comfortable doing give aways to key supporting blocks to win votes, national consequences be damned.
this clearly is very bad, and like Netanyahu you can expect Trump to attack our system of Justice and undermine its independence and try to destroy its powers all in the name of protecting himself. Hopefully however Trump's attacks will be narrowly focused on himself and not end up destroying much of our justice system.
I fear however we might end up with an Orbán or Erdoğan type system, where the above holds with the corruptions of media, the radicalization and radical polarization of society and the corruption of government to the sole end of the re-election of the leader and his party. But on top of that, elections are no longer free. I fear less a top down banning of elections, that remains very unlikely. I fear more local Republicans. I suspect no matter what they'll keep doing what they're doing, which is underfunding elections so major urban areas don't have enough polling places and suffer long lines and lower turn out, as well as passing more annoying and difficult voter ID laws designed to lower turnout particularly among black voters.
but I worry that with a Trump heavy judiciary more of these laws will get through and be MORE restrictive. I also fear we could see local Republican elected officials now empowered, will refuse to certify elections they dislike, or actively cheat and with a Trump controlled DOJ cases just are never brought, while local Democratic officials might live under a microscope and be charged and removed for literally any imaginary thing. Indeed we saw Ron DeSantis removed a number of local legal officials who were popularly elected because he didn't like how they did their jobs. We could see a lot more of that in general but aimed at local Democratic elections officials in red/swing states.
in that case it goes from past hard to nearly impossible to remove the illiberal leader.
so basically we have to hope he just/only makes our society a toxic hate filled hell pit and the corruption of our Democracy remains minimal

I hate Ron DeSantis so much, it's unreal.
I especially hate when people, Democratic-alligned commentators especially, try to cast DeSantis as the "same GOP alternative" to Trump. For people me like me, he's just as bad, if not worse, than Trump.

These moments totally happened at the GOP primary debate
Tumblr media
WaPo satirist Alexandra Petri add her spin on the Republican primary debate. This is a gift 🎁 link so that those who do not subscribe to The Washington Post can read the entire article. Below are some excerpts. Enjoy! 😁
If you said, “Would you like to watch Ron DeSantis, Vivek Ramaswamy, Nikki Haley, Tim Scott, Doug Burgum, Mike Pence, Asa Hutchinson and Chris Christie talk to each other for two hours? FYI, the place where they’ll do so is hotter than Beelzebub’s armpit!,” I would have said, “No, thank you.” But if you said, “The alternative is watching Donald Trump talk to Tucker Carlson on the website formerly known as Twitter,” I would say, “I can’t wait to hear what Ron, Vivek, Nikki, Tim, Doug, Mike, Asa and Chris have to say!” [...] Here is approximately how it went. Bret Baier: Hello. We have brought a bell just because we enjoy the sound of a bell. Martha MacCallum: Feel free to speak over it; it will give the evening a fun, musical vibe. Baier: Yes, and speaking of music, candidates, the number one song in America is something called “Rich Men North of Richmond”! Governor DeSantis, introduce yourself by providing a close reading of the subtle lyrics of this song. DeSantis: Hang on, first I have some prepared remarks! Joe Biden’s basement! Hunter Biden’s paintings! “Rich Men North of Richmond”! Taxes! Florida! Baier: Chris Christie, why would you be better as president? Christie: Bret, I have spent the last four years sailing around sharpening my traffic-cone harpoon for my hated foe (from hell’s heart I spit my last breath at him!), and the one question I did not expect was about a scenario where I could actually become president. Uh, I was governor of New Jersey? So, take that for what it’s worth.
[See more under the cut.]
Scott: I have come to this debate with some specific numbers at my fingertips! I was told everyone would be excited about specific numbers! If not, I would really like those hours back. Ramaswamy: Hello! You may be wondering, who is this skinny guy with a funny name? I’m not a politician who is going to offer you a series of prepared, meaningless platitudes. I’m a businessman with no political experience who is going to offer you a series of prepared, meaningless platitudes. Isn’t it time we stopped running away from things and started running toward things? I am not running for president so much as I am running for the title of Favorite Grandson of your Fox News grandmother. Have you ever considered that people don’t love God anymore? [...] Pence: Hello! I am here to recite scripture and keep referring to the Trump-Pence administration, and I’m all out of scripture. That was some Mike Pence humor; I will never be out of scripture! I am unquestionably the best-prepared person in this race, the single individual with the experience that is closest to being the president, with no exceptions that spring to mind. I have been in the hallway. I have been in the White House. Do you like what my administration did with the Supreme Court? [...] Ramaswamy: You think now is the time for incremental reform. I think it is the time for actual revolution. Pence: Good Lord, no thank you. I do not have any revolutionary proposals. I believe in mild, small, incremental change. Except for a nationwide 15-week ban on abortion, which I want to implement because I promised it to God. Haley: Let’s be realistic! Women hate hearing this. Let’s just admit that it will never happen. But we’re all going to say we want it to happen! But, ladies, it’s not going to happen. [...] Young Person: Please tell me that anyone on this stage believes in climate change, the only issue I care about because I anticipate living on this planet for at least 60 years. I am starting to get worried. Can we have a show of hands? DeSantis: No! We are not schoolchildren! We will not raise our hands or acknowledge the existence of science! Ramaswamy: As the only one on this stage who is not bought and paid for, I have a thought. Christie: I have had enough of a guy who sounds like ChatGPT and stole his opening gambit from Barack Obama. I came here to bludgeon Donald Trump verbally, but Trump is not here and I have a lot of verbal bludgeoning built up. [...] Baier: Why do we have homelessness, drugs and crime? Pence: Because Democrats talked about defunding the police, and everyone knows that if you say “Defund the police!” into a mirror three times, crime appears. It’s just science, or, as Governor DeSantis and I prefer, religion. Christie: I disagree. Crime went up because Hunter Biden did it.
Please use the gift link above to read the rest of Petri's cutting satire.
Just one thing I would like to comment on though. I grew up in NJ... BEYOND the exits on the Turnpike. Why does there always have to be a NJ joke?🤦🏻‍♀️There really are nice parts of NJ. Really. I mean it. 😉

TFG :: Sign of the Day... this billboard on a highway in Michigan... the swingiest of swing states...

What’s at stake in 2024
At least once a week, I receive a note from a parent telling me that their son or daughter will not vote for Biden because he supports Israel. Many (but not all) of those letters ask me to articulate reasons why their son or daughter should vote for Biden, notwithstanding his ongoing support for Israel.
I wrote the following note today in response to a reader who sent a email about his son. I thought it might be helpful to other readers having conversations with adult children who are considering not voting for Biden.
I do not recommend forwarding this list to a son or daughter with a note saying, “Read this.” Conversations about the war in Gaza and support for Biden are difficult and should be approached with caution, respect, deference, and due regard for timing. Consider this list as a resource when the opportunity presents itself for such a discussion.
Here it is:
Trump has threatened to cancel the visas of students protesting in support of Palestinians and “send them home” immediately.
Trump is a much stronger supporter of Netanyahu than Biden and will not put any pressure on Netanyahu to end civilian casualties, while Biden has been putting significant pressure on Netanyahu to avoid civilian casualties.
Trump has promised to round up, imprison, and deport ten million immigrants using the US military, which will cause a humanitarian and civil rights disaster in the US, including the deportation of US citizens based on their surnames, language preference, and ethnicity.
Moreover, supporting Trump increases the likelihood that
Your son’s sisters, girlfriend, and female friends will be demoted to second-class citizens by being denied access to abortions, contraception, and IVF; they and their doctors will face ruinous criminal and civil penalties, even for miscarriages that seem “suspicious” to the fundamentalist police.
Your son’s LGBTQ friends will lose their right to marry and can be legally discriminated against by anyone who claims a religious basis for doing so.
Your son’s Black and Hispanic friends will see their right to vote diluted or denied entirely.
Trump will pull out of the Paris Climate Accords, threatening your son’s health, safety, and economic security and that of his children.
Trump will weaken NATO, increasing the likelihood that your son and his friends will be sent to fight in conflicts in Europe to stop Russia’s advances against former USSR republics.
Your son’s friends will continue to be saddled with crushing student debt.
Your son and his friends will lose guaranteed access to healthcare through the Affordable Care Act.
Your son’s parents’ economic security will be threatened by cuts to Medicare and Social Security.
Rights to free speech on social media will be suppressed when they do not comport with MAGA ideology.
The DOJ and FBI will turn into the equivalent of the German Stasi—the personal guard of a despotic ruler.
The Supreme Court will be further stacked with reactionary justices who will reign during most of your son’s lifetime, implementing white Christian nationalism in place of an open, tolerant, pluralistic democracy that maintains the separation between church and state.
If your son is still pursuing an education, his academic curriculum will be determined by the likes of Moms for Liberty, the Federalist Society, Steven Miller, Ron DeSantis, and Marjorie Taylor Green
The Civil Service will be replaced with MAGA loyalists who will ignore the Constitution and laws of the US to implement Trump's policies of revenge and hate
Your son should lobby Joe Biden to change policy, protest the administration’s policy, and organize resistance to that policy all he wants. But threatening to withhold his vote is wrong and self-destructive. It will encourage others to abandon Biden by giving legitimacy to the idea that there is an equivalency between Biden’s support for Israel and the multitude of deprivations and injuries Trump will inflict on hundreds of millions of Americans during a second Trump term.

I updated my pinned post and removed TOH, SPOP, and Nimona fans from my DNI list. It took me a while to realize that not everyone in those fandoms is a Disney Hater who jacks off to evil CEO caricatures of Mickey Mouse. In fact, part of the reason I hate the hatedom so much is because I’ve been bullied by them all my life for liking Disney; and me bullying people for liking stuff that is either used as a symbol by or was created by members of the Disney Hatedom just made me no better than not only people like ND Stevenson and Ron DeSantis, but also all the reactionary trans people and their allies who mindlessly hate on and harass people for liking the Harry Potter franchise. So to all of those people who are fans of those three franchises but aren’t part of the wider MAGA-esq Disney Hatedom cult, I’m sorry… 😔

Might not be the right place to ask, but with the way things are going, how would you feel about a Jewish/Roma defensive pact?
Any time in recent history where the Jews are getting persecuted, the Roma persecution soon follows or is accompanied by it.
I propose the Jewish and Romani communities band together for strength in numbers.
Yes, I realize I'm on anon, still sort of in the closet about being Roma, but I want to get some thoughts going on whether or not it'd be viable and whether or not it'd be a good idea. I've got some logistics worked out for the US. But it involves heading somewhere hotter than where most Jewish folks are, specifically any constitutional carry red state.
I only support this idea for defensive fighting, no offensive use of violence intended or allowed, but we can't let the Holocaust happen again, and as per usual, we're the only people that will step up for us.
I'm not going to think you a coward for saying no, but I do hope some Jews think it's a decent idea. Get us out of blue states that hate us in favor of red ones that won't give a shit and let us defend ourselves.
Florida is the top state I'd recommend since the Florida police want people to defend themselves.
Dear anon,
Listen I don't tell most people my ethnicity unless they ask what the thing around my neck means or what part black I am (becuase Jewish featured on a light skinned person must mean mixed race black in America I suppose). I can't imagine the racism you experience simply because I am very much gadjo.
I really do want to tell you that I have no political standing whatsoever (besides Russia wanting to kill my family if that's anything)
That said I DO live in red state in the south and I think your best bet is actually a small southern town that sees you as a neighbor first and your race second. Other than Florida is pretty bigoted even if they support carrying arms so not sure if it's that much safer.
That said your plan to establish a Jewish-Roma based militia in Florida would scare Ron Desantis and for that alone I approve. I can see him decrying us in horrifically antiromanyist and antisemitic terms just for trying it.
I think most of the like minded Jews also moved southeast if you catch my drift and the rest will not move from New York or wherever they live to save their life (sometimes literally).
so I don't think this would actually work anon but I see where you're going with this
there SHOULD be more Jewish Roma solidarity instead of derision and bigotry thrown by both groups at each other often because those stereotypes are often the exact same
yours,
Cecil

I love being Jewish and professionally studying this stuff bc it's always a good time to point out that the biggest pro-Israel organization in America, Friends of Zion, (donors/members include Mike Pence, Ted Cruz, Ron DeSantis, & Donald Trump) was founded and continues to be run by evangelical Christians, and has 10 million members opposed to the 7.5 million Jewish people living in the US (most of whom are open critics of Israel). There are estimated to be about 30 million Christian Zionists in the States alone, while the worldwide Jewish population is about 16.1 million. It was also primarily the US, Britain, and Russia's idea to dump all their Jewish citizens in the Middle East in the first place; the Holocaust just gave them a convenient excuse to go through with it. Strangely enough, those were the three nations that abstained/voted no to intervening in Gaza right now.
Ofc being Jewish and pointing out that Zionism was founded by Christians (and that the founding of Israel in and of itself was antisemitic) tends to get me accusations of being a "self hating Jew" so. This is fun
Zionists have created this paradigm where no one can be anti-Zionist without being antisemitic not even Jews. Goes to show how little it’s about protecting Jewish people and now much it’s just a flavor of European colonialism

Hey I hate Biden too on this genocide shit hes pulling but like. I can already see people talking about not voting because he's so shit. And i feel the need to remind people that as much bullshit as Biden is, the possible candidates for the republicans make him look like fucking fidel castro. Do you really think Trump wouldnt lean in more on the Genocide? Do you really think Ron DeSantis wouldnt quadruple the genocide and kill off all queer folks here to boot? Please still vote, do it with a shot of whisky if you gotta but please vote
