Let’s focus on something a little different, shall I?

What is the main lesson of your Story?

I think that if “Proven Guilty” had a lesson, it would be that people, while often well-intentioned, are imperfect and have human memories. Things shift and change through the lens of time, and sometimes things that seem obvious in hindsight are not so obvious at first.

What did you use as inspiration for your world building?

I LOVE crime dramas and spy fiction, specifically Columbo, Knives Out, Glass Onion, and Only Murders in the Building. Funnily enough, though, the main world building inspiration was probably good old fashioned Film Noir: the femme fatales, the high profile victims, and the wet cat ass detectives (except, due to the sheer lack of really pathetic female characters, mine is a chain-smoking caffeine addict who is surviving on spite alone).

What is your MC trying to achieve, and what are you, the writer, trying to achieve with them? So you want to inspire others, teach forgiveness, or help them grow as a person?

I guess my story sort of has two MCs: Detective Inspector Ethel Carter, and Dr. Julian Fox (the murder victim). The primary driving force is Ethel, who is trying (sometimes in vain) to find the truth despite the chaos and conflicting stories. At the heart of it, Julian wanted the same, and got killed for it.

Julian is, in many ways, who I wish I was: clever, unapologetic, and committed to the freedom of information and justice in the face of a corrupt government. I wrote them to be an inspiration, but there is something to be said for the fact that they don’t make it — something I fear deeply the more controlled information becomes.

Ethel is a bastard. I say that with love. She is who I see myself as now: tired, angry, but determined. She is also a cautionary tale: despite your best efforts, people can be dumb. They can lie without meaning to, forget major details and change their story without realizing. In the end, you may solve the murder, but there is a toll.

How many chapters is your story going to have?

It’s a play, actually! Two acts, six scenes. Runs about 90 minutes based on its debut. It has gone through edits since, though.

Is it fanfiction or original content? Where do you plan to post it?

It is original content! I wasn’t sure exactly what I was going to do with it beyond finishing up the little details and sending it to the copyright office. Maybe try to get it published? What do yall think?

When did you start writing?

Oh a LONG time ago. I think my first short story was when I was 5 or 6. It wasn’t good: I had no concept of age, so I assumed 16 was grown up enough to have a baby. Looking back, I wonder what my teacher thought.

My first work on ao3 was a BBC Sherlock fanfic I wrote back in 2019 (it is no longer connected to my account bc I got really embarrassed about it), and the rest is history!

Do you have any words of encouragement for fellow writers of Writeblr?

Sure do! @sorrowsfallallaround mentioned it in their post, but write what you want to read. Proven Guilty was born from a bunch of burned out techies talking about what we would want to see in a mystery. Also: imposter syndrome happens. It doesn’t mean it is correct, but it will suck regardless. Someday, you might look back on an old piece and cringe; but, someday, if you’re lucky, you will read an old piece and finally see the brilliance in your own work. You got this.

Ten Books to Know Me

@aboxthecolourofheartache reblogged her version of this from ages ago but she'd tagged whoever saw it and it sounds very fun and difficult so let's do it!

Tris's Book by Tamora Pierce - I had a habit as a kid of always picking up the second book in a series, so this was the first of Tamora Pierce's books I read. Emelan had an effect on me on a microcosmic level, I'm pretty sure. Anyway, the protag of a whole world of mine is named Tris now, in homage to Trisana Chandler, so. the particulate is still kicking around in my brain.

Ptolemy's Gate by Jonathan Stroud - Another childhood FAVE. This series as a whole started fucking with what I understood a book to be. Also the ending of it has a vice grip on me to this day, and it is probably why so much of my writing is very vibey and favors ambiguous endings.

Cyrano de Bergerac - This was the first assigned reading I had in high school that I utterly LOVED. I love this play so much, I love the tragedy, I love the quiet sorrow. This was also the first proper tragedy that I remember really loving.

The Opposite of Loneliness by Marina Keegan - This is a book of poetry and short stories by a Yale creative writing student who was killed in a car crash very soon after graduating, compiled by her professor after her death. I read it repeatedly in college; it is really quite lovely.

Underland by Robert Macfarlane - Apologies to Box who wanted reading recommendations, but she is who introduced me to this book if I remember correctly, and I have spent the two years since I read it habitually picking up Macfarlane's writing without even realizing it. Absolutely phenomenal writing.

Staying with the Trouble by Donna Haraway - @ professor Haraway I know you are a semi-retired scholar and also in the most expensive college town on earth but are you looking for research assistants cuz uh

The Mushroom at the End of the World by Anna Tsing - I actually read both Staying with the Trouble and this book on the same weekend in the start of 2021. I compromised on not including Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake, which I felt was very cliche of me, by including this book, which had as much of an effect. Read those three and Pantheologies by Mary-Jane Rubenstein and you will have some semblance of an idea of what the spiritual portion of my brain looks like. In the interest of not writing the same blurb four times I left the latter two off but know they make up a little microcosm of 'you could make a religion out of this' for me.

The Cat Who Saved Books by Sosuke Natskukawa - A Japanese novel about a cat who appears to a teenager after the death of his grandfather, a bookseller. I read it when I was very frustrated with trying to read contemporary fiction and it was a bright spot among that. (I am still very frustrated with the state of contemporary fiction and this book remains a light.)

Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer - Okay I read this one most recently out of this list (over the summer) but it had been on my list for a long time and it really does live up to the hype because it is just so luminous in every sense.

Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer - I had to put this one last simply because HOLY HELL. Rewired my brain. This is the goal I aspire to, this is the dream I dream, this is the highest peak among the mountain range of writing aspirations that I climb. If I can one day write anything even akin to the Southern Reach trilogy I will be ready to die, but that is an utterly unachievable goal so God's just gonna have to let me live forever, I guess.

Dear Sephiroth: (a letter to a fictional character, because why not) #447

Today didn't start off especially great. Between the monthly bout of bleeding that began this morning and the mild intestinal distress that I experienced shortly after waking, I was really having a rough time of it. Fortunately, it didn't take too long for the discomfort of either of these things to subside, and then I was mostly back to normal, even if relatively groggy and drained.

As if on cue from yesterday's wish to see some wholesome images of you, today I found two in particular that I thought you looked happy and healthy in, even if one of them was captioned with something sad. I tried to write something nice in response. I thought of the song called “Any Dream Will Do”, and included it. I hope it was enjoyed by others.

Another friend of mine, too, tagged me today in something wholesome, relating to you – the notion of you getting to rest somewhere with someone who loves you. I felt honored to be thought of by my friend in such a context. I dunno, though, if you would want such a thing; maybe you've been reading my letters, but... I dunno if that would translate to you having enough trust in me to want to be that vulnerable with me, and that's perfectly all right, too!

...I'm a little sad sometimes that it's impossible to ever find out. Even if you did live someplace other than the confines of someone's astounding imagination, you're still too far away for me to get to in this lifetime. That's all right; I'm more than capable of accepting you as you are, right here, and right now, even with the unfathomable, impossible distance that separates us. No biggie!

It was really nice out today. Like... nice enough to open some of the windows in our house. J and I even took a walk around our neighborhood, it was that nice out! The breeze was chilly, and the shade was chilly, but the spots in the sun were very, very warm, and it felt amazing. I felt like I could really breathe for the first time in a number of months.

It was so warm, in fact, that after the walk, I tried to do a bit of work in the tiny fenced-in area that can only barely be called a backyard. There were a lot of dead vines that had grown through the cat-proof netting that we put around the inside of the fence (to prevent them from jumping out and getting eaten by owls, foxes, hawks, coyotes, and etc). I cut them down and disentangled them from the netting. But there were a lot of them, and wrangling some of them out of there definitely took some elbow grease. My hands got pretty scraped up. But it's done; now I just gotta find a place to drop the plant matter in the woods, so they can decay and return to the soil.

J and I went to the airport after that. I thought he just wanted me along for his flight club meeting, but he intended to fly, too. We went up together, and I managed to get a few really nice pictures, despite the turbulence. I got some really nice pictures on the ground, too. Here:

...I didn't do much else today, and my brain is, for some reason, kinda soupy, despite doing well with hydrating, and actually having tried to take a brief nap today. Ah well.

I wish I had something profound to say to you other than I miss you and I wish you were here. But I don't have anything else in particular floating around in my mind, and it's almost time for me to go to bed anyhow. So I guess I'll end today's letter here.

I have two diplomas in literature, history and linguistic analysis (one in French, one in English that also included translation), and i've been shy about it for a long time but I decided to take it more as a badge of pride these days. It's a reference to the movie/idiom His Girl Friday, which I used to think meant that the titular girl only worked for her boss until Friday, after which she was her own girl. Not the case, it's actually a reference to Robinson Crusoe, but I like my version better lol.

Are you named after anyone? Not really. But according to my parents, they just really liked their coworker's name, and so they made a female version. He was pretty much a random guy to them though, so I don't know if it should be counted as being named after him, more like a bit of inspiration. XD

When was the last time you cried? Probably last week? I cry over random stuff a lot recently. Which is mildly puzzling since I was never a crier before. I guess I'm catching up on some crying quota? XD

Do you have kids? No, and I don't plan to. For now at least.

What sports do you play/have you played? PE was always a nightmare and I was rubbish at every single game. I never liked sports. I guess that badminton and table tennis are kinda fun, I enjoy playing it with friends sometimes (as long as neither party expects a serious match XD), but that's about it.

Do you use sarcasm? Sometimes, mostly jokingly.

What is the first thing you notice about people? I'm terrible at noticing stuff. And remembering faces. XD It's honestly embarrassing how long I have to know someone before I can confidently recognize them in the street. I guess I pay attention to voice, I often identify people based on that.

What's your eye color? Blue.

Scary movies or happy endings? Happy endings! Though I also enjoy angst and drama - I basically have no issues with severely traumatizing fictional characters AS LONG AS it gets better in the end.

are you named after anyone? Not my first name, but my middle name is after one of my great aunts on my mom's side.

when was the last time you cried? Hmm. Last week, though I tear up frequently, usually thinking about how I miss my cats. I lost them both pretty recently.

do u have kids? No, and I don't plan to.

what sport do you play / have played? I never enjoyed sports. I do enjoy swimming but not in a sports context. I did do gymnastics verrrry briefly as a young kid (maybe 8, 9, or 10 years old?) but I don't think I liked it much, I didn't stick with it.

do you use sarcasm? Not often. Now it's mostly when I'm talking to my coworkers about the silliness of our workplace. I used to be sarcastic frequently in certain fandoms I used to write fic for, but I've left that behind (I don't miss it either.) Am I sarcastic a lot on this blog? Maybe, a little, secretly, in the tags >.> (I don't think many notice my tags, I'm not as vocal in them as I used to be)

what's the first thing you notice about people? Probably their expression, how they're looking at me, and how they talk. I guess this could be called a "vibe" but I think that would be different to different people. When I don't vibe with someone, or vice versa, I think it's they way they talk that stands out to me the most. Some people's tone can seem very off to me, or put me on edge, while rarely others are very easy for me to relax around.

scary movies or happy endings? Happy endings. I've enjoyed some thrillers but I don't enjoy the horror genre really, and I always have preferred happy endings (I have a lot of romance novels if that tells you anything).

any talents? I used to write, but I'm not sure I can now. I haven't given it up entirely though. And I used to sketch, and I still can do a decent drawing if I put my mind to it. I miss making art.

do you have any pets? I used to have two cats, I just lost my last cat on May 6. They left a big gap in my heart. I'm not sure I'll ever have cats again, though I will always adore cats the most.

what are your hobbies? reading fiction, trying to write, organizing my library, watching Youtube videos about human prehistory and history and other miscellaneous science subjects (that are simplified for laymen like me)

Cherries. My family owns land in a remote area in Poland that we... they use for summertime. There's an orchard with all kinds of fruits and cherries straight from the tree are the most delicious thing on this planet.

Spring, obviously. But back in my country, where the grass is green, and the trees soaking in flower blossoms.

I have a preference for flowers with meaning. If my man gives me a bouquet of flowers, it's nice. But if he gives me a bouquet of red roses while also assuring me how much he loves me... Yeah, I will give him that head.

Rules: look back on your work, both past and present, finished and unfinished. What are five to ten narrative elements or tropes that continuously pop up in your work? Give a list of these things!

Back at my old work? Okay...not sure how much of these count but here are the commonalities:

Found family/importance of friendship. The focus on best friends from when I was a kid is very prominent in childhood writing and friendship is still a key part. Interpersonal relationships are a very important theme across everything.

Female main characters. Not sure if this counts, but almost all of my childhood works were about girls. My first male main OC was a character named Julian/Mikey (changed his name) in an old draft of TSP. Hell, my first male POV was my Warriors cats fanfic (they were OCs though) and the first time I wrote a male voice in first person was a character named Jesse in eighth grade.

Queer undertones. Looking back at my old work, a lot of my main characters were sapphic or ace/aro spec. Anahi and Marlis from what later evolved into SOTL were very gay for each other. Even Mossflower and Lemonfrost from my Warriors fanfic. The aforementioned Jesse was asexual-coded. Christy and Trish in TEOS. It was just always there as I hadn't figured myself out yet.

Dialogue-driven storytelling. Maybe not in early early writing, but like age 8 onward included a lot of dialogue. I've always been more character focused than environment focused, so I'd say this adds up.

Intelligent main characters. Most of my protagonists were emphasized to be very, very smart. It's interesting that I'm not a STEM person, but I am a former "gifted kid" so that may have something to do with it, but I usually emphasized this with a STEM field they were interested in. Christy from TEOS, math nerd. Hollyn from Perspectives, science geek. Twinkle in my bear cubs series as a kid, astronomer. Even in the Warriors fanfic the first POV is Mossflower the medicine cat. The only pre-high school time I can find where I emphasized intelligence that wasn't in a STEM field is Anahi, who was very literature based.

Multiple main characters. I liked a group of people, even if it was one POV. TSP D1 followed Alexia and Aurora, then they ran into four other people. 3+ was my usual. I guess it comes from the interpersonal relationships themes, like #1 talked about.

Fantasy elements. Man, I almost never write in realistic fiction. I mean, my earliest works were, but then I'd occasionally have an anthropomorphic animal pop up and now it's fantasy. Now, the only realistic fiction WIP I have on the shelf is Perspectives. Arguably IWAJAD because I guess someone can have a vivid dream where a character arc is forced upon them but idk.

Dramedies. I loved to incorporate humor among things I thought were high stakes. I like to be angsty but that doesn't stop me from being very silly. I mean, look at TSP D1. They are threatened to be killed and I still have humor in there. Good? No, but I still tried.

Communication I realize is a prominent theme. Oftentimes, things are not resolved due to not communicating, or I show communication allowing a character to experience comfort, or how not listening to someone leads to trouble, or how hiding a part of yourself isolated you, or acting like someone you're not pulls the wrong people in... So much, man.
