He wanted to curl into a ball and disappear. Of course his father would send a howler, of course Barty would open it in the middle of breakfast, and of course everyone would hear about what a horrible son he was.

The words were still ringing in his ears, bouncing around his skull.

Worthless, imperfect.

A ninety-nine isn’t enough.

I want perfection. But you can't ever give me it.

He’d been naive. He’d gotten a good grade, been immensely proud of it (which he shouldn’t have been), and sent his father a letter.

The doorknob clicked. Barty spelled the curtains on his bed shut, but Evan had already seen him.

“Go away,” he said, muffled by the blankets he’d thrown haphazardly onto his face.

I want to disappear.

“He’s an asshole,” Evan said, plainly.

Barty sniffed and rolled over. He parted the curtains a bit, just enough to see the other boy, and there he was.

Evan tilted his head. “Can I come in?” He asked, and something in Barty rearranged itself. He nodded.

Evan smiled. The rearranging happened again. And again. And again.

And he realized he didn't want it to stop.
