i have intrusive thoughts myself and know you didn't mean any ill will! but i got kind of alarmed when you mentioned intrusive thoughts since those are extremely unpleasant to experience with more light ones being; thinking your partner is ugly, you should put your hand in that dangerous place, etc, to more extreme ones being; you should walk into danger, burn out all your hair, inflict violence on or kill people you care about like your parent or pet while they're vulnerable, cut off your hand with that sharp object

intrusive thoughts don't reflect what the person actually wants at all and it's stressing to experience that all in your mind

i think a helpful thing to distinguish the two is,

intrusive thoughts = something you don't want and stress about

and impulsive thoughts = something you do want (like getting a haircut, buying that cool thing online, cuddling someone you love) and some people do stress about those like jon

Nothing rude about it! I get intrusive thoughts too but let me explain my reasoning just a little bit.

Intrusive thoughts are not always negative or bad, they are just thoughts or ideas that pop up without someone consciously trying to think about them. Want has only a small part to do with what makes an intrusive thought. Intrusive thoughts are ones that make the person having them uncomfortable or uneasy in one way or another.

Intrusive thoughts can be romantic/sexual, violent, negative, bizarre or paranoid.

And they appear in different ways depending on the person.

Jon's thoughts would be intrusive thoughts rather than impulsive thoughts due to it being season one and him not being in love with Martin yet. It's more of him being a superiority figure walking in on their assistant changing and thinking about it against his wishes. Also being ace throws in a couple more complications into why they are intrusive thoughts vs impulsive thoughts ((at least for season one Jon) and in my own personal experience) if he was having these thoughts late season two onward then yeah they would be impulsive thoughts because he has accepted having genuine romantic feelings for Martin, but he's not there yet.

I think Anthony being in Siena's life was really toxic for her self-esteem. I mean, becoming an opera star takes a lot of dedication & ambition & people who succeed in opera have a strong sense of self-worth (in fact, they're notorious for being egomaniacs!). If you notice, her sense of self-esteem is very low, so I wonder if being with a family man whose family saw her as the dirt on their shoe because classism completely wrecked her sense of self-worth.

I don't particularly agree.

First of all, I think being dedicated and ambitious in your professional life does not necessarily relates to having a high self-esteem or even sense of self-worth. You can be completely dedicated to proving you’re the best, even knowing you’re the best, and still, having a low-self esteem in other situations, or even because of how dedicated you're to your craft it fucks up your idea of self and self-worth (Black Swan comes to mind, but there are many other exemples of that). So, I don't agree that just because someone is a successful opera singer, then necessarily they would have a strong self-esteem and even less that they would be egomaniacs.

Then, talking about opera singers during that time period specifically, they were adored by the public, sure, but they were also equally ostracized by society, and the women had the worst reputation. In my opinion, how Siena talks about herself, how she views herself, reflects the society they live in and not just the behavior of one man. I do agree that being with Anthony didn't help how she feels at times. But I also don't think he is the cause of all her feelings, it's more like she already felt that way, but being with him heightened those emotions of not being good enough to marry and have a family. 

Even then, I am being honest, I don't see Siena as having low self-esteem or low sense of self-worth, I see her more as being a realistic or pessimistic. And after your lover kicks you out on the streets, who wouldn't be a bit pessimistic and go on complaining about life? I think her behavior is understandable giving the situation she was in. Also, if her sense of self worth was that bad because of Anthony and their relationship, then she would have gone back to him the first time he asked (in 1.03), wouldn't she? Instead, we saw Siena looking for other men and also Siena standing up for herself. And she does that a lot during her relationship with Anthony, she doesn't take any of his crap, so why would it have been toxic for her self-esteem? I'm wondering what she could have done if she had a good self-esteem and I don't know what you would expect her to do differently? The only situation I can think of is her going to the ball with Anthony, but to me, Siena backing down is more her being afraid of what could happen than her thinking she isn't good enough. 

I'm not sure I'm making any sense anymore, but in short: I think Siena's issues are more because of how society views her and women in her profession, it has forced her to adopt a realistic posture and to conform that there are things she might want but will never get (or that she is too afraid to try and fail), than actually her having very low self-esteem.

Jazz au. Any thoughts relating to the musical "Chicago" in general, and the song "Roxie Heart" in particular?

Not hugely? Chicago is a great musical but not quite the vibe I’m going for. Blue Ruin is going to be a very backstage story like some of my favourite musicals from the 30s and 40s which are about people who happen to be stagefolk, whereas Chicago I see as people who want to be famous for fame’s sake.

Still some great songs in it though, Cellblock Tango cannot be beat.

Roxie Heart would kiiiinda fit? But again Roxanne’s not interested in being famous, she’s interested in being good, but she’s not on track to be the greatest of the greatest. She likes having a job that means less manual labour and she’s not interested in getting married, but she’s not seeking fame as the final result. She wouldn’t turn it down but what she really wants is enough money to be independent so she can be in control of her own destiny.

Also, girl’s a chantreuse, she’s a crooner, she doesn’t do the big bright bouncy songs. She sings low and sweet and longing and to a certain someone in a booth in the back corner she sings like home

I agree that messing with her memories was wrong. Terrible. Horrible. Very bad. Incredibly out of character. However, I’ve also got to argue that derogatory name-calling, chaining him up in her room, smashing a bottle on the wall next to him, and being a hypocrite were also abusive things she did in return. And that’s without mentioning that she was the one that turned Loki asking a question into a fight. Loki pulled a knife out after she’d wacked him in the head and she also had a knife out.

I agree that abuse is a universal issue which often transcends time, and that abuse towards women should be stopped. However, while men abusing women is perhaps a more prevalent issue, we must remember that men can also be victims of abusive behaviour.

I see that you have not read through the anti-ragnarok posts 👀 but a tldr; Loki has done bad things, but that doesn’t make him a bad person and he actively works towards being better, despite being raised in an environment that was abusive towards him and the bunch of traumatic events he had piling up and pressurizing him into doing those bad things to begin with. 

I know you didn’t mention Thor, but, I’m also going to have to mention that Thor is a liar, abuser, and manipulator too. And Valkyrie was a slave trader for a good few thousand years and you won’t convince me that there wasn’t physical abuse involved. And, because I feel like it’s necessary, I want to remind you that even if it’s fiction, abuse and sexism can work both ways. I’m not saying that Valkyrie and Loki were equally abusive to each other because you can’t really quantify that, but holding only Loki responsible in the given scenario (which I’m assuming is their interactions through Ragnarok) is iffy.

Theres no such thing as being born "in the wrong body", but there IS such a thing as forcing such strict gender roles on people that they feel like they cant love what or who they do comfortably without being mutilating their body to the point that it resembles another sex or rejecting the reality of their sex altogether. I agree with some of what you sent me, but also please consider that a) i don't believe that I ever said it was a requirement too feel that way to be trans

and b) I'm genderfluid and I've been alive for approaching 3 decades now and sometimes i have felt very much like i *was* born in the wrong body.

Experiences are not a monolith, and I've actually taken gender studies classes and studied queer history. I understand gender and sex and societal pressures. I've lived through it.

But also telling people how to be trans is kind of degrading because my experiences with my gender and body are valid. My experiences are mine and not the case for everyone because everyone is different. I was never forced to be girly, i frequently dressed in masculine clothes, i was called a tomboy even though it didn't fit me. I was never told i was born in the wrong body. It was never something forced on me. It *was* and sometimes still *is* how i personally felt/feel about myself.

I am aware of needing to destroy gender roles, and i actively try to do so with everyone i meet. And i wish you had messaged me off anon so i didn't have to go and air out my own dysmorphia in the public eye.

I appreciate this wasn't meant with malice but also it *is* a little patronizing to come holler into my inbox in a way that expects for me to reply in a public forum about my own experiences
