Sasuke and the Final Battle
Alright! So personally, I dislike the conclusion that Sasuke's character got in canon. Here's why!
I am putting in pluses between panels to ensure nobody thinks those panels belong together.
The premise of the battle is as follows: Sasuke, motivated by the loss of his family, comes up with a plan to rectify the injustice he experienced which involves killing Naruto - not just because it promises him the power he seeks but also because he wants to cut that bond. It's a direct parallel to the first VotE fight.
Now, I still think Sasuke deserved better and I am very sorry to all Sasuke fans, but we need to get this one out of the way first. While Sasuke's plans in the first VotE fight made a lot of sense, here, in the second fight, they are downright insane. He essentially plans to take over the world, become a dictator, and maintain his rule in neverending loneliness by becoming immortal. It doesn't need a genius to see that this should probably be considered tyrannical and self-destructive. And yes, he absolutely needed someone to knock some sense into him.
Tumblr media
And it also makes a lot of sense for Konoha to be wary of him. Outside of this fight, he switched sides like five times. That's not something that would make you look particularly trustworthy or reliable. It makes sense for Sasuke to feel guilty for his actions. He tried to kill his friends and comrades on multiple occasions. That's not something anybody would feel proud of.
Tumblr media
But now, here are the issues I have with this battle and its conclusion:
Sasuke's core motivation is being glossed over
There's a huge bias going on in favor of Konoha and Naruto
Sasuke's sudden change of heart makes no sense
The conclusion of Sasuke's character only exists in theory
Sasuke's core motivation is the injustice experienced by the victims of the Uchiha massacre. His pain, loneliness, or even his wish for change are merely symptomatic, yet they are the only motivations ever acknowledged throughout the battle - even by Sasuke himself. In the end, this only serves to make Sasuke look insane to the reader so that Naruto can physically and ideologically defeat him. But defeating and reducing Sasuke like that can only come at the cost of his depth, authenticity, and readability as a character.
Tumblr media
This also makes Kishimoto seem incredibly biased when it comes to Konoha. The crimes the village has committed, be it genocide, slavery, or child abuse, are usually reduced to "sad backstories" rather than being given the time and dignity to be properly identified, criticized, and rectified in the story. Aside from this linking back to Sasuke's character being deprived of his moral value in the story (due to being directly connected to these underutilized topics), this reads like propaganda from an irl perspective. These are some of the most contemptworthy acts in existence we are talking about. And yet Konoha gets away unscathed. It's disheartening, demoralizing, and disappointing.
Now let's take a look at how his character actually progresses during this battle.
Sasuke wants to change the world even if that means killing Naruto or being lonely
Sasuke re-evaluates his relationship with Naruto
Sasuke realizes he no longer wants to kill Naruto or be lonely even if that means the world never changes
Now. Rethinking his self-destructive approach is, without question, a positive change. But that is not the problem here. The problem is that this change in his character occurs rather unprompted. Sasuke, the entirety of the story, has ignored his own suffering in favor of justice. But then Naruto basically says "it hurts to watch you suffer" and Sasuke suddenly rethinks his entire philosophy. This is unrealistic for his character and hurts his coherence.
Tumblr media
Furthermore, this results in Sasuke's arc never coming to an actual "conclusion". As a victim, he should be given justice. As someone who was supposedly suffering under his loneliness, he should have been given companionship. None of that happened. Sasuke is not given justice and is even incarcerated in the most undignified and dehumanizing fashion possible in the anime. Afterward, he takes off alone. So in the end, even the "power of friendship" resolution that Kishimoto attempted to write only occurred on a surface level and failed in its execution. Sasuke internalized none of it and practically had no conclusion whatsoever. He is still suffering. Nothing has changed.
And at this point, I'm just wondering "what was the point?". Clearly, the point of Sasuke's character wasn't to explore the darkness of the shinobi system. And it wasn't to seek justice for the horrors it has committed. It also wasn't about helping Sasuke heal from any of the hardships he's endured. The point was, unfortunately, to be Naruto's trophy. Naruto is the main character, therefore he must remain ideologically unchallenged, he must have the strongest jutsu arsenal and he must have the most unwavering determination (i.e. will of fire). Even if that means bending the other characters to the plot's needs.

Gonna be perfectly honest i dislike this photoshoot and its just 100% in line with how all fat models are treated in photography and advertising. You cant just have a fat model it has to be some gimmick about how fat they are. I dont think its a clever or even visually appealing idea. This is a first idea toss away concept is just low hanging fruit.
The way a lot of advertising works is skinny white people are treated as the "default" and will get placed in every shoot but everyone else is relegated to things like this. Oh youre fat? You can be a pillow for our product to show were body diverse or whatever. Oh you're dark skinned? You can only show off our neon lipstick and clothing collections. Like if you spend any amount of time learning about fashion and advertising you see this stuff constantly. Its bizarre to see it getting applauded as body positivity. Its just business as usual marketing. Its strange in general to applaud an advertising campaign. At best its a vampire feeding off the larger cultural trends to stay relevant, at worst their market studies said you are now a vulnerable demographic worth wringing dry.
Sources: im both a professional studio photographer and a fat person

a couple paragraphs of my cheeky take on omega/alpha wizards that hypothetical leads to a smutty scenario where sirius and snape hook up in 199x but in reality just became an excuse for me to discuss european policy and wizards
By the mid-20th century, 'omega' and 'alpha' carried the same pseudo-scientific Victorian connotation as 'invert' or 'melancholia.' The general consensus in the medical community held that certain people had certain attractions and rhythms of arousal which could be construed as a sexuality secondary, a broad set of experiences additional to their same- or different- sex attraction, but these patterns were hardly sufficient to support the 'alpha' and 'omega' as diagnostic categories. Furthermore, extensive literature reviews had turned up no proof of male-bodied omegas spontaneously growing female reproductive organs, much less bearing a child; likely, this myth of omega biology had grown out of early society's need to explain transsexual or intersex conditions. And although the omega and alpha categories still held cultural sway, a 1962 amendment to the European Convention on Human Rights ensured that the terms could at least bear no legal weight.
The 1962 Amendment on the Legitimacy and Legal Rights Concerning Secondary Sexualities was notable not just because it formally denied the legitimacy of these categories while also prohibiting discrimination based on assumed omega or alpha status (protections for homosexuals, unfortunately, were still a step too far), but because it represented the first on-the-record instance of a wizarding government working alongside a non-wizarding government to draft legislation, possible the first since the Great Schism in 1510: West Germany formally submitted the '62 Amendment to the Convention, with the Wizarding Federation of East and West Germany noted as co-researchers. In fact, because the WFEWG had possession of the books magically-recovered from the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft library in 1933, wizards represented over half of the amendements working group. Ironically, 1962 was also the same year that the WFEWG Steering Committee voted for a fifth time against joining the European Convention; despite the (necessarily) increased partnership over the decades, the question of nation, land, and resources still loomed large; both sides were still hesitant to legally commit themselves to any more than a memorandum of shared understanding.
None of these developments in international affairs mattered in Wizarding England, where the hidebound caste-and-class systems still held sway and the 1489 Shrewsbury Accords on Wizarding Separation from the English Crown and Polity were alive and well-enforced. These developments especially did not matter in the mansion at 12 Grimmauld Place, home to the Most Ancient and Noble House of Black.

I keep seeing these posts cursing writers for writing about X trope or Y sexuality or Z pairing (alternatively, for not writing about X or Y or Z). And for me it doesn't really matter then if the sentiment that the OP wants to see in the media they consume is something inherently positive that does deserve attention, because not only does that kind of post read to me as self-entitled and ignorant, it also makes me incredibly unmotivated to write.
It's one thing to criticize popular/traditionally published/mass media, but to jab at fanfic authors or others who publish their writing for free...? That's such a bad take, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who gets majorly dejected by it.
I'll write about the things I enjoy and want to explore, and if you don't want to read it, then simply don't. There are millions of free works out there. I'm sure some of them are for you. Just like my works are for some people, but maybe not for you. And that's OK.
So can we please talk about things we want to see in our media without simultaneously pointing fingers at the people who create something other than that particular thing? Please.
