Buck learns tommy's birthday is coming up and starts going into overdrive to plan a huge party, gets a clipboard and everything. Hen and chimney have known this guy for almost twenty years and they have never heard him mention his birthday, they didn't even know the month. Buck's bursting with excitement over the surprise, and tommy's kinda picking up on the wired energy and getting nervous. The night before, they're laying in bed awake, buck with excitement, tommy with anxiety.

Tommy just quietly tells buck that he doesn't want anything for his birthday. It's a day that has always been stressful and upsetting, made worse by the fact that it's supposed to be happy. Years of it being a day he dreaded, and then years of not celebrating it because he was alone, they all added up and his birthday is not going to be anything but a bad day that he just want to get through so it's not looming. He doesn't want to disappoint buck or ruin the party he knows he roped the 118 into, but even with the celebration and the gifts and the effort, it's just not gonna be a good day for him. What he really wants is to just have it pass without comment.

And so there is no party. They both work that day. They get off their shifts the day after and tommy is so relieved when all buck asks him is what he wants for dinner and if there were any cool helicopter rescues.

Two weeks later buck hosts a potluck. Unrelated, obviously. If anything it's a pre-thanksgiving party, because everyone's going to be working that day anyway. They all make food, and they play music, have fun, get a lil tipsy. And all buck says to him about the party is that there's going to be free food and they never did get to have their dance.

It's a good party. There's nothing wrong with a little celebration, even if there's nothing to celebrate.
