yeah paywalled content tends to go in trends when something new pops up (well on the mm side anyway not sure about alpha), but normally it's ya know fashion, like how every single big early access creator is releasing lingerie/sleepwear atm cos of simtimates kit. I hope that this won't become a new "trend" but hopefully most people know better. so idk if i only liked it or if i actually put it in my queue but i saw a post that talked about a few pieces of tech that focus on user repairs and being sustainable (fairphone and frameworks laptop) and after doing some more research into what they have to offer i actually really excited that these products are finely hitting the us market and that people are moving away from the belief that super smooth streamlined glassy = the future. being able to reliably repair and keep what you have alive verse throwing the whole thing away when maybe all you needed to do is add more ram to your current laptop (something that i would do with my laptop to keep using it for a few more years if it wasnt glued shut and i was at risk of cracking the screen) or swap out a fuse.

i know big corporations dont like it but i truly do believe with how much tech we use on a daily basis that the way that we are going to be more environmentally friendly is to move back to tech that we can hang onto for as long as we can and to recycle and then reuse what we cant. like with the frameworks laptop. i saw that they just partnered with coolermaster to create a case specifically so that you can reuse you motherboard, cpu, etc and make a portable workstation. you could dual wield with the laptop you just upgraded if you want to dedicate specific tasks to one or the other. they also specifically mentioned that you could screw it into the back of a monitor and create your own all in one. guys thats cool as shit??? if you had a 3d printer and some time you could even create that yourself

on top of the actual hardware part moving to open source programs when your able. when i update my desktop i plan on running linux. it might have a learning curve compared to windows but in terms of performance??? ive heard that it runs smoother even on older machines, that its more efficient because isnt running stuff in the background that tracks your data and shit. now i understand that not everyone can do that because there are some programs that dont play nice with linux but for my needs at least it does everything i would need it to. and maybe a couple years down the road we do figure out how to run these programs on certain flavors of linux since its open source and people fiddle with it so much. (still looking for alternatives to like word and excel though, i use google docs since its free but i want to move away from them as much as i can too since they laid of their youtube music team (i believe?? it might of been a different branch) for trying to unionize)

if anyone knows of any other smaller companies that actually focus on sustainability and user repairability please let me know. theres certain pieces of tech that i think are now unfortunately behind a software repair paywall, things that used to be just machines and are gaining more bells and whistles like cars and refrigerators if that makes sense. but the more we push for these things to be repairable by us the consumers id hope that would change, or there would at least be options that dont need specific companies to repair them or else they blow up

it’s honestly insane how much dan and phil do to try to be as accessible to everyone as possible. and they litteraly only get better.

like for the three tours:

you can watch tatinof on youtube premium, and while that’s great, you still have to buy youtube premium. you could get it then cancel it, but then you’d only be able to watch it once.

for ii, they were able to put it on dvd, which is great! you still have to buy the dvd, but you can watch it as often as you want.

and then we have wad. first, he was able to do a screening with a pre and post show at the end of feburary, but you still had to pay at least $15 for it, and you could only watch it for 48 hours.

we all knew dan wanted a place for it to stay forever, but i think it’s safe to say that we all assumed we’d have to buy it one way or another. even when he announced it was going on youtube, there were people, myself included, that had a tiny thought in the back of their head that we’d have to pay for it, cause why wouldn’t you? our society runs on capitalism and this is a huge, insane, and expensive project, it makes sense for it not to be free, and yet dan made it accessible for litteraly anyone with an internet connection. i dont think people realize how huge that is, and i respect the hell out of him for it.

even with phil, we all joke about capita£ester cause of all the sponsorships (and it being fucking hilarious), but you can still tell, he doesn’t like to hold people hostage like that, even with society telling him to. even if he isn’t always as explicit as dan. even with the sponsorships, every time he takes the time to still make them as entertaining as possible as if to say “yeah i know this is awful, but hey! at least i didn’t put a paywall on all my videos and then take it down a day later cause people were calling me a capitalist pig!”

I feel like all of them would be great.

Figs classes might be a bit wild and crazy and unstructured but she'd probably be the most popular teacher in the school.

Fabian is teaching the fighters and the dance bards, probably partially combining the two because it would help his students footwork to learn how to dance.

Gorgugs barbarian classes are teaching the importance of controling your rages and targeting it where it needs to go. No anger for angers sake, its anger to protect and defend. His artificer classes are also taught with the same level of patience and understanding.

Kristen might be a bit scatterbrained but she helps her students with their cleric classes as much as she's able. Doubt is okay, she's there for them to talk about it and even if they feel like they dont click with the god they started off with she has the resources to help them find a new one.

Adaine teaches the wizards and any expensive spell components are paid for by the school with funds they set up after her issues in junior year. Learning shouldnt be paywalled. She's a lot less stuck up than her own teacher was.

I feel like Riz wouldnt be a teacher. He has his own goals of becoming a detective AND he works with his dad as well. He would be an excellent tutor though, he helped his whole party during junior year keep their grades up and he enjoys feeling useful. He'd be a good substitute teacher if he was needed though.

Id be less offended about watcher making a subscription service if:

1. Some of the shows theyre putting behind the payeall weren't tailor made for youtube. One of the series titles they showed was survival mode, which is literally just a lets play series. You know. The genre made on and for youtube. It makes no sense to keep that behind a paywall.

2. I thought they were in a proper place in their career to do it. I just dont think watcher has a big enough fanbase to do what collegehumor/dropout did, and dropout has the advantage at this point of offering a massive backlog of content that one can work through, while currently it doesnt look like watcher's streaming service has much besides some bts from previous series and a karaoke edit for a bunch of the puppet history songs. For something that was supposedly in the works for a while, I expected them to at least have some new enticing content that would at least demonstrate what they hoped to do now that they dont need advertisers

3. If they sold physical copies of their media that i could purchase. I swear to god, shane madej, if you dont let me buy a box set of the puppet history seasons, Im just gonna make it myself

hi sorry to come into your inbox for this but i just need. to gripe. every new bit of info we get about the new DA game is making me more and more preemptively tired lol. mostly the way it's looking like eeevery bit of lore that's been revealed has something to do with such and such book. or this comic over here. or this podcast from two years ago. or THIS podcast that is happening now that's a ~discord exclusive~. or this youtube series. or this random VA talk show. etc etc ad nauseam. i am so tired of videogames coming with HOMEWORK you're expected to do just to know what's going on

I think its honestly REALLY funny how bioware just doesn't know what it wants. On one hand they say that the new game is fine for newcomers, the way they did for dai, and use this as an excuse for how dumbed down some of the writing is - but then in the other hand the majority of the characters and plot beats have origins hidden behind pay walls.

It was already bad enough when, to understand each game properly you had to have paid for the previous one's dlc (want to know anders' past as a warden? Buy awakening! Want to know wtf is up with Morrigan and the eluvians? Buy witch hunt! Want to know who tf corypheus is and what hawke and varric even have to do with him? Buy legacy! Want to understand ANYTHING about veilguard? Play the descent AND trespasser, our epilogue that we hid behind a paywall!!!!!) and you know at least the dlcs were pretty good on their own so I could forgive it a little bit.

But there's so much extra media now omg I haven't touched a single one of the comics because I'm not rly into American comics, I've read almost all the books and some of them are genuinely fucking mid. And at least back in the day the books were more... Bonuses? You DONT need to read the stolen throne to understand anything on the games, but it's INTERESTING. it explores characters you mightve been curious about. I love that ! Or the last flight is really interesting, just, to see how the 4th blight was beaten, to get to know those legendary heroes, and know why griffons went extinct. A bit annoying because you do need to read it to also understand how the hell they're coming back - but it still feels a bit more like a bonus than a necessity.

But then we have asunder, which also in general just kinda sucks as a book, that is really really needed to understand the mage rebellion, Fiona, Cole, and the cure for tranquility. The characters will explain a lot of those things to you in game, but it leaves you with the certain feeling that you're missing something. It's a huge advertisement for asunder.

Similarly wicked eyes and wicked hearts is hollow if you haven't read the masked empire which is also my least favorite book because it's so damn fucking boring I literally never managed to finish it, but it's mostly because I hate Trick Weekes' writing lmfao. Gaider was wildly misogynistic but my god at least he was entertaining as a writer whenever he didn't butcher female characters.

That's two major plot beats in inquisition that require reading one of the books. And ofc it's major villain and another major plot beat that require having played the previous game's dlc to properly understand.

And since then we've had so much more. I don't know. It's just complicated because I *like* book characters showing up and the books having importance in the sense that, I like reading and I'm a lore nerd lol. But I think there's a lot of frustration to be had as to the sheer quantity of extra media you need to consume if you want to be invested in the story. Because you could say "well just don't buy them then" but I LIKE dragon age, it's story, and plot, but omg some of the books and comics are also so hard to find and so EXPENSIVE. I think tevinter nights costs like 20£ if you want it on paperback rather than Kindle, and don't get me started on the dozens of comics.

At least the podcasts and discord only content isn't nearly as offensive, imo, because they're free. But also there's another issue with all of this extra content - it's that it doesn't get fucking translated. Not often, anyway. Not in as many languages as the games do. That means there are many, many many many players and fans who are just not allowed to learn more about their favorite game series because they don't speak English, because theyre not rich enough to buy 10 books and 20 comics. It feels a bit wrong

I think is because of comments like this that Im more heartbroken over Shane doing this than the others, now don't get me wrong I'm not part of the "shane was pushed into doing this by the two evil greedy guys he calls friends" (which btw reeks of racism) the fact that I'm not part of it makes it more sad to me, because I Know he decided to do this, he knows how hard it is to just buy groceries nowadays, not even getting specific into the age group of most of the fans.

Did I misunderstand your earlier post about the watcher situation? it seemed like you were against shane and ryan and that other guy starting their new streaming service, but that would contradict your most recent post about youtubers feeling entitled to add revenue. If youtubers arent entitled to add revenue because youtube hosts their videos, isn't starting your own platform an acceptable solution?

starting a streaming service is a terrible idea not because of the method of monetization, but because of the way they are choosing to do so. if anything, taking money direct from fans is probably the most ideal way for things to work (albeit not the most lucrative and presets some unique social hazards); i get paid via patreon myself. i think it's core concept was revolutionary: let fans fund the things they like to see directly (or as directly as possible lol).

it's the way in which they are approaching the streaming model. actually first of all, streaming itself is just like a completely insane and bad idea for so many reasons including "video hosting is so fucking expensive". the selection of shows they have is way too limited to justify the change in model. other streaming services are openy struggling to make shit work. dropout's success appears to have been a black swan event and not a business model to emulate. its a pretty delusional idea

removing your backlog from public eye (i think they've backtracked on this one already) and making your work less accessible is a disrespectful way to treat an audience. they have a patreon of over 12k members paying at least 5 bucks a month (even if patreon eats 30% of the money and taxes are another 15% [before write offs], that's a lot of fucking money). im not sure why that wasn't considered as a more viable means of raising funds. it would be significantly less shameful to make a video asking for patreon donations and drawing attention to its existence rather than something that is going to take so much time, effort, and money that it honestly beggars belief lol

i dont think starting your own paywall is the solution when they already have a solution that works: the patreon direct support model while hosting vids for free. making your work harder to access helps no one, ultimately.

Well, this is disappointing. Been watching them since the Buzzfeed Unsolved days and now if they put all their content behind a paywall, i dont think I'll be watching it anymore cause subscriptions aren't all that cheap. Sure, their production has clearly been expensive from the looks of it, but its not the production but the content and the chemistry that made me look forward to watching them. I've been watching this show for years and i really don't want to stop watching it because of this really "not so properly" thought out of move cause clearly none of us are happy about it.
