You aren’t even complaining to Pope at the start, really. He’s sitting, quiet and stiff, staring blankly at the TV’s black screen in Smurf’s living room while you stitch up Craig’s shoulder nearby. You’re telling Craig and Baz about this nurse at the clinic—a real piece of work, from the sound of it. 

“He acts like I don’t literally have a medical degree,” You’re saying, lighthearted, but Andrew can tell it’s forced from the way your mouth is twisted into a tight smile. “He’s always leaning over my shoulder, making sure my stitches are done right and man-splaining how to splint an arm properly. Like I don’t already know how.” You chatter on, mild complaints really. You know Craig and Baz don’t really care, but the chatter keeps Craig mostly calm when he’s in pain. Pope is hanging off every word, though, feeling his pulse spike with every complaint from your pretty mouth. You shouldn’t have to deal with that, he thinks. You’re competent, and intelligent, and this coworker guy of yours needs to back the fuck off. “He also asked me out like, four times last week,” You’re saying then, and Pope turns his head, eyes like a shark, cold and dark, boring holes into the side of your face. You glance sidelong at him, but continue your work. “Can’t take no for an answer, apparently.” “Sounds like a prick.” Craig quips, voice strained and rough, wincing as you pull the needle through his skin once more. The conversation segues after you shrug it off like it’s nothing, but Pope can’t stop thinking about it. He’s never met your coworker, doesn’t even know the guy's name, but he can imagine the satisfying crunch of his nose beneath his fist. Can calculate exactly how many times he’d need to hit him to get an apology from him. Can practically feel the blood smear on his knuckles. 

He walks over to help you clean up when you’re done patching Craig’s arm. He’s tense all over, which isn’t unusual, but he’s never this quiet when the two of you are alone. 

“Everything okay?” You ask airily, never pushing for an answer, which he usually doesn’t have. His head turns, and he regards you with an intense look for a moment, before sniffing once, turning back to the mess of bandages on the table. 

“That guy at work givin’ you trouble?” He asks casually. Or at least as casual as Pope can be. You pause what you’re doing, leaning a hand against the table, your other resting on your hip. 

“Nothin’ I’m not used to.” You state evenly, biting at the inside of your cheek. “Why?” 

He shrugs, tips his head side to side some, stacking bloody gauze neatly in front of him. “Just was thinkin’ I could… pay ‘im a visit.” He mutters cryptically, impassive in a way that feels forced. “Make sure he doesn’t bother you anymore.” 

You stare blankly at him for a moment, shocked by the offer but not quite surprised. Pope has been known to fix things with his fists when someone he cares for is under threat. You just weren’t aware you were someone he cared for that deeply. “Andrew,” You smile, bemused and tender in a way that makes his hands clam up some. “No, thank you. I appreciate the offer, but it really isn’t a big deal.” You assured, reaching out to squeeze his shoulder gently. He has to fight the urge to lean into it, glancing at you from the corner of his eye, and he’s quiet for a long moment. 

“Shouldn’t let ‘im treat you like that.” He mumbles, gruffly, like it annoys him that you don’t take him up on the offer. “I know,” You reply evenly. “Which is why I’ve already emailed HR and made a formal complaint to my boss at the Clinic.” You assuage, hand lifting to rest on his bicep, squeezing gently. “It’s alright. It’s sweet of you to be worried, but I wouldn’t ask you to do that.” He looks over at you like he can’t believe what he’s hearing, head tilted to the side a bit, eyebrows furrowed, lips twisted like there’s something he wants to say but can’t find the words. You understand why he’s taken aback by your refusal of his offer, of course. All his life, violence has been expected of him, and you’ve seen how it affects him, even if he tries to hide it. You refuse to be another person who makes him feel like a machine. “Fine.” He mutters, nodding once, glancing briefly down at your hand on his arm, before returning to his task of cleaning up the gauze. You nod in return, smiling faintly, and the two of you fall into a comfortable silence as you clean up the mess left over from fixing up Craig’s injuries. 

When it’s time for you to leave for the night, you can tell he’s wary to have you go. He’s refusing to look at you, eyes on the ground as you say your goodbyes, and Pope never refuses to meet your eyes. So, you ask him to walk you to your car, and he gives a stiff nod of agreement. “Thank you,” You murmur, ducking your chin down some in an attempt to catch his gaze. “For earlier.” You clarify at his confused little frown. He simply hums, shrugging a shoulder, noncommittal. It makes you smile, for some reason. He really doesn’t know how to take a compliment, and it’s oddly endearing. A beat of silence passes, and another, and you sigh softly. Leaning forward is easy, brushing a chaste kiss to his cheek is even easier. There’s a faint hitch in his breath, the slightest widening of his eyes when they snap up to meet your own. His fingers flex where his hands hang limp at his sides, as if he doesn’t know what to do with them all of a sudden.

“Goodnight, Andrew.” You hum softly, giving him a gentle smile, squeezing his shoulder in a friendly manner, willing your heart to calm in your chest. 

“G’night, sunshine.” He replies, voice rough and quiet. 

He watches as you get in your car, and he doesn’t move until you’re out of his sight. Fingers lift to touch his cheek, and in that moment, he allows himself a rare smile. He knows then that he’d do just about anything for you, something warm and unfamiliar curling in his chest. He has half the mind to follow you home. Not for nefarious purposes, no. Simply to make sure you get home safe, and maybe linger outside your apartment building, watch you go through your nightly routine. He can’t say he hasn’t done it before, but tonight? Tonight he’s sated. Cheek tingling from the brief touch of your lips against his skin, and that’s enough for now.

have you thought about how copia and perpetuas first meeting would be like? Where do they meet, what’s their initial response to seeing the other for the first time (in real life), what kinds of questions do you think they’d ask each other once the ice starts to break?

Im not really sure why but I really like the idea of Perpetua actually KNOWING about Copia. Like accidentally hearing Sister or Nihil talk about him when he's still really young and he's just able to piece everything together. Like the first time they see each other is when they're children at some event from the ministry or smth and like Perpetua sees him and knows but Copia is oblivious bc he's been raised by the Psaltarians and those are his parents. Perpetua thinking that maybe Copia knows about him too but when he sees how his twin is acting with his "parents" Perpetua suddenly realizes that Copia doesn't know about him.

I know we always like to portray copia as the "sensitive" one and he is but like in this instance I think we can understand why he's so angry with his twin/hates him.

Everything was fine until Sister and Nihil had to tell him they were his real parents. Arguably copia is quite literally fighting through a life/world he thought was true that's now crumbling around him and i think he blames Perpetua for a lot of that. Like if he had just been papa from the start then Copia could still be happy with the Psaltarians. Things wouldn't have turned weird. He'd feel normal but now he feels angry.

I dont think Perpetua talks too much. I think he mainly speaks through expressions/gestures more than talking. (Imagine little copia talking for him as he hides behind him 😭). So the fact that this random guy is literally just staring at him and blinking while copia is fuming sends him into over drive and he blows up.

I think perpetua would continue to try to do things to get him to realize though that it isn't either of their faults. The blame lies with Nihil and Sister and he's just as much of a victim as copia.

Eventually I think smth like star wars brings them "sorta" closer. Copia is still walled off from his emotions

Like, I imagine he thinks he's lost it for a little while. Are hallucinations on strictly one side of your vision a symptom of blindness?

But I imagine he comes to terms with it pretty fast because, on the one hand, if its a hallucination he should probably ignore it; but on the other -- six-fingered -- hand, those are some dangerous looking aliens over there and holy shit Ford’s going to die if he doesn't try to do something right this minute-

He starts wearing the eyepatch because tourists kept getting creeped out by his pretty extreme... lazy eye probably isn't the right word considering how it'd be darting all over the place constantly; but needless to say it was bad for business.

Ford starts wearing goggles for similar reasons. Though he probably catches on a bit quicker. He'd be confused before mumbling about the "theory of this or that" and making a hypothesis (im tired i dont have the brain to describe science rn TwT).

Ford maybe jumps in somehow, or at least screams like hes about to die as he realizes Stan incorrectly attached this piece to that one on the portal. Stuck helplessly observing as it sparks and fizzles and Stan move it's about to blow!

But he kind of needs to keep a low profile from Bill. Then that need is only further emphasized when he starts racking up a bounty and a longer list of space crimes. So being known as "that flesh sack from 48~/ with the 6 fingers and the always moving eye" isn't really conducive to that.

Imagine if it actually helped their relationship. Ford gets a front row seat to everything Stan goes through, as Stan does for Ford.

Ford watches, powerlessly screaming at Stan like you would a stupid horror movie protagonist walking towards their obvious death as he lies around the house. Letting his burn fester and rot untreated.

Maybe Ford is camping out one night and sees Stan's scars. Maybe even sees him fake his death; possibly even why he had to do it in the first place if there was a close run in with Rico's goons or something.

Sees him breakdown as he tries and tries over and over to get the damn portal on again. As he begs for his brother to come back. As he beats himself up, struggling to work through an equation as the words shuffle around the page for him. As he wakes suddenly from a nightmare and begs for his life in Spanish.

Stan watches as Ford scrapes by to survive, helpless (or near so maybe) to give his brother the assistance Stan needed when he lived on the streets or ran for his life. Maybe sees as Ford pulls out a photo from his coat and stares at it for hours.

Sees the way Ford can barely use one of his hands for awhile, the thing still damaged from having a nail driven through it. Sees the wounds left over from Bill's torture. Watches during the nights he's too focused on the portal to sleep how Ford scrambles to stay awake too.

Maybe there's a night, or even a couple, (before the metal plate) where half his vision is completely yellow and Ford is talking out loud, to him. Directly. And he sounds so wrong; too shrill and high-pitched to really be him. And god sometimes Stan feels like a moron now for not taking that damn book.

As he runs from a... triangle? Who the hell is- wait isn't that guy in the journal? I thought Ford loved that guy. Why's he trying to kill him now?

It's hard to keep a grudge when you're spending pretty much every waking moment with someone again. When you constantly see them at their very lowest moments and watch life hand them a shovel before telling them to dig. When you see their triumphs and losses and struggles play out directly in front of you.

I feel like if it did still take 30 years to get Ford back, Stan actually takes the time to look through the rest of journal 2 and 3 this time. To try and piece together this Bill thing. Maybe even tries to find ways to safeguard it a little more since the journals definitely make him seem like a threat, but alot of those warnings aren't things Stan can read, and seeing firsthand what he can do definitely paints a better picture.

Maybe this time, when Stan goes in for a hug, Ford actually hugs him back.
