Mario being slack jawed for the entirety of this sequence is so good. One would assume that he's shocked by the revelation of Luigi being the prophecy's Host and having to fight his own brother. But I think he just hasn't been following what's going on and he's so confused. Tippi saying something like "I'm so sorry Mario, I know this is--" only to be cut off by Mario, who just saw his brother come out of a giant head, going "Mr. L... ATE LUIGI!?!?"
#super mario bros#Luigi like Hey bro can you fill me in on whatever happened back there#and mario just like. In perfect english no accent like. I don't know man I really have no fucking clue Im so sorry.

What would you choose? :0c
(note: original image is from HERE (link) - but I edited it to add a wider variety of options.. also added $3 extra to the total, even though I know that makes it more uneven lol, I thought if you're adding 10 whole extra items, the money to spend should at least be increased slightly, if that makes sense..)
#I would get orange juice. black coffee. AND iced coffee ($3) because I love the variety of having multiple drinks#then sausage and scrambled eggs ($8). Then sauteed mushrooms ($3)....AND... hrm.. then spending the remaining $4 would be hard#I wish I could get waffles (as they are my favorite and are superior in every way compared to pancakes. donuts. etc.) but I'm not willing#to give up the other savory things just to get them. so... then maybe I could get a biscuit or english muffin? and just put jam or#honey butter or something on it so it can be my replacement 'sweet and bready' thing instead of something from the $5 row??#OR I could also just assume that having the orange juice plus iced coffee would provide enough of a 'sweet element' to the meal#(since I largely prefer savory foods. I only like a tiny bit of sweet added for variety) and thus forego any sort of#'bready' thing entirely and just get the bowl of beans/onion/tomato (I'd leave the avocado since I don't like the#texture of them really lol). THEN I'd have $1 left to get the milk or the black tea... increasing my total of random drinks..#which is always the goal of course.. as a chronic ''person who is sipping at 5 different drinks at their desk simultaneously always'' perso#OR... I could just do.. waffle. scrambled eggs. sausage. mushrooms. and black coffee and orange juice.. which is... okay variety#augh... so difficult.. As my Ideal Breakfast is like a buffet type thing or something where you have like 25 different things to choose fro#and can get a little tiny bit of everything. My eating style is very much like.. I'd rather pick at a small amount of a ton of#different things than just have a very large amount of only one or two things. Thats why I LOVE sample platter type stuff.#So it's like... augh... the ideal option would be a tiny portion of EVERYTHING actually lol...#Difficult to choose...#ANYWAY.. Also no idea why I added croissant instead of bagel. I only thought about that afterwards. I do actually like bagels.#I've only ever even had a croissant like 2 times in my entire life. Yet I've had many bagels. For some reason it stuck out in my mind more#when I was considering 'essential breakfast foods' somehow... how could I forget them... bagels my beloved...#Blame it on the hot weather... 'What in the blazes? The sun hath obliterated the concept of bagels from my miind!'#(< meant to be said in a silly overdramatic elderly wizard accent or something)#Also I don't think ''bowl of beans. onion. avocado. and tomatos.'' is necessarily a breakfast classic or something gbhjjh#but I was just trying to think of a versatile vegetable-ish side that could be full of common breakfast additions#so people could do stuff like ''oh I get the toast option and then the bowl of stuff and I put the avocado on the toast'' etc.#Like a mix and match. You could mix ingredients from different parts. You could put scrambled eggs and bacon and onion#on the bread or soemthing. etc. I just feel like something is always missing if a Full Breakfast Spread#doesnt have some sort of onions or beans or mushrooms or asparagus or spinach like... some sort of thing that isn't just eggs and meat and#bread.. you know? lol..#But then again.. I am the Sampling Plate Style Variety Lover and Tiny Portion Of Food Picker so maybe thats just a me thing.

Different Italian anon, but the thing with Tuscan C is that it's pronounced like a very strong H sound, which is extra weird cuz the letter H makes no sound in Italian, normally. It sounds the way Spanish pronounce the J. We say it's "aspirato". So then people from there will say things like Hoha Hola (coca cola), and it's funny. It's also extremely contagious, I got family in Florence, you spend 3 days with them you start doing it too before you even realize.
.
#that sounds really endearing actually#answered#anonymous#this is entirely beside the point but I still feel sort of bamboozled by languages that have silent letters#or when letters have multiple pronunciations that vary wildly from word to word#and when the sound and the letter don't seem to match like how J sounds very close to H in Spanish like you mentioned#I'm generalizing a little but none of these are really a thing in Finnish#in Finnish words are pretty much always pronounced the way they are written if that makes sense#I don't know the language terminology but I think phonetic spelling is what you call it#each letter represents a specific sound and you string those together#when you hear a word you can always tell how it's written and when you read a word you know how to pronounce it#even if you're encountering the word for the first time and have no idea what it means#it's comparatively direct and predictable there's practically no need for guessing or memorizing#also the stress is always on the first syllabe and it's so subtle it might as well not be there at all#which sometimes makes spoken Finnish and Finnish accent sound kind of monotonous there isn't a lot of intonation#I was extremely confused by the concept of spelling bees as a kid#anyway long tag ramble but this stuff is just interesting to me

I think that 'you're like a father too me' vs 'you were my brother' is crucial in understanding the Anakin and Obi-Wan dynamic and their particular brand of dysfunctional communication.
#on a somewhat related tangent#I think it's interesting to consider if Anakin ever felt himself equal to Obi-Wan#(unconsciously I mean#I don't think it would be a conscious thought)#I've seen talk about how Anakin's manner of speaking in AotC is an attempt of mimicking the core Coriscunti accent of Obi-Wan#as an attempt to integrate and not have his background as an enslaved person on an outer rim planet be obvious with his accent#and the class dynamics of that#but you've also got the dynamics of padawan vs master and Jedi knight vs member of the Jedi council#Anakin is always ranked lower than Obi-Wan#and it's not something that I think Obi-Wan is really conscious of after Anakin's knighting#but Anakin as a slave would have been very aware of his status and the social ranking that confers#that awareness would not just disappear after he is removed from that environment#star wars#anakin skywalker#obi-wan kenobi

The two reactions to the character of Glen Stubbins:
Glen Stubbins is actually Ben Glenroy. He secretly switched places with his stunt double before the double got pushed down the elevator shaft and the rat hallucinations are from his near death experience.
Glen Stubbins is an offensive stereotype and I want him off my screen.
#i mostly see the former on reddit and the latter on tumblr#for the record i'm neither#i'm firmly team ben is dead#and i'm not irish and don't have an ear for accents so it doesn't really bother me personally#though i do think it's a strong argument against letting actors do things just because they're famous#(i'm assuming that's how that happened)#only murders in the building#omitb#glen stubbins

Most people have an accent when speaking any second language, and to my native English speakers, that includes us. Try not to feel bad for having an accent when you speak a language you're learning because there are countless people who do the same! The point is that you're making an effort to learn, and that's what matters. 🧡
This applies to anyone learning a second language! An accent isn't a bad thing, and it's ok if you speak a second language (or otherwise) with one. Anyone who judges you for that is 1. an asshole and 2. an idiot. You're doing your best, and that's what counts!
Don't shy away from speaking a language because of your accent, and there's no need to feel embarrassed about your accent either. Most people appreciate that you would even try to learn their language, in my experience. You're doing great; keep it up!
#i know it can feel really embarrassing when learning a new language#I've had it happen multiple times where i just don't speak a language#because i have such a strong American accent 💀#but it's best to keep trying and learning#it's ok if you speak with an accent; that's entirely natural#languages#language learning#reminder#hermes deity

[ID: A drawing of two SeaWing dragons from Wings of Fire facing each other. Tsunami has her back to the viewer and is smirking with her ear tipped forward. She has mostly medium blue scales with dark blue along her spine and snout. Some of her aqua blue bioluminescent face scalers are lit up. She is smirking at Whirpool who floats in front of her. He looks stunned by the audacity of what she is saying in aquatic. His green-yellow scales are lighter on his belly and darker on his back. He has large ears for a SeaWing, which are adorned with several large hooped earrings each. Over his left eye, he has a small golden monocle which is suspended in place by a fine metal chain attached to one earring and one eye brow ring. Between them, in glowing and floating letters, it spells 'Squidface'/ End.]
The scene that made me laugh is when Tsunami learns how to speak Aquatic and the very first thing she learns how to do is basically swear. Headcannon that squidface is the SeaWing swear that functionally means dickhead. Which I think fits Whirlpool well. I tried to make him as oily as possible. His ears normally droop under the weight of all the hoops. But he's so surprised that they're sticking up quite a bit. He also has some big ears for a SeaWing. All the better to put more hoops in. I may do a bit of a redesign at some point and give him gages because that would be sweet.
Love Tsunami. Next up is a scene that made me cry.
#wings of fire#seawing wof#tsunami wof#whirlpool wof#for real though#tsunami just rolling up and swearing in a bad aquatic accent is peak tsunami energy#She definitely gets Riptide to teach her exclusively vulgar language and how to order food and drinks#Then eventually actually learns the full language#Headcannon that there are aquatic accents#there's a 'royal' accent that all the guards and royal family and those who live close to the palace have where they really annunciate#all of their words with very exact flashes and talon signs#There's a deep water accent where they rely more on flashes#There's a shore accent that's a bit more choppy as they don't speak aquatic as much#Maybe a cold water accent and a reef accent?#And seawings with freckles or birthmarks have trouble doing the flashing parts of aquatic#I like to draw Orca with a big ol birth mark over both of her eyes#which made aquatic very hard for her#Some words she said always seemed like she was screaming because of how bright the flashes were#Tsunami has a weird mix of royal with shore and with dry mouth#dry mouth is the slightly insulitng way of saying a dragon who doesn't speak aquatic naturally but has picked it up#Most of them use only talon signs but Rainwings can mimic the flashes#woof that was a lot of tags

listen i am geralt of rivia hater number one but one thing i actually CANNOT stand is when the fandom mischaracterizes him. took one look at this man who speaks very straight-forwardly and matter-of-fact and is a little recalcitrant with his words sometimes and went "haha he communicates in grunts! man who only says 'hm'!" and then won't even write him to speak in full fucking sentences. hello???? hello???????? yes the netflix show was a bad influence on everybody because they were trying too hard to depict geralt as a stoic manly badass but we CANNOT let that distract us from the REAL thing to make fun of geralt for. which are his Constant Unprovoked Monologues
#also the fact that he fakes his dumb stupid little rivian accent because the man was NOT raised in rivia. but i digress#'haha he only says hm!' where were you for every episode when he launched into a speech about the lesser evil. that's like. the whole thing#geralt of rivia will do nothing But talk once you let him. don't give that bitch a chance! he'll start up about honor again!!!#convinced that most of this is because netflix show insisted on showing us him around jaskier so much#and jaskier does not shut up. love him to death. but geralt genuinely does not have time to get a word in edgewise#i will admit that this is something that i had to learn by reading the books and paying more attention to it#but it's not like he DOESN'T do it in the show. if you ever sit with a witcher episode transcript for whatever reason#and really take a look at geralt's lines. man he talks a whole fucking lot.#again cannot emphasize enough that he Monologues. HE TALKS HIS WAY OUT OF SO MANY SITUATIONS.#me when i look filavandrel of the elves in the eyes and 'hm' at him and he lets me go. no bitch he monologued!!!!#terrible. terrible. let this man speak. if i see you fanfic bitches continue making him talk in sentence fragments again i'm gonna kill#as for my own fanfic. i will always prefer a geralt who talks too much to be believable over a geralt who barely speaks at all.#both because i believe in letting him speak his mind which he OBVIOUSLY likes to do. sideeyes him.#and because it's just fucking boring and a little annoying to read speech patterns that don't sound like how people talk.#cough cough lan wanji the untamed. man i'm not sitting here and reading this motherfucker's two word sentences#let him speak!!!!!!#anyway.#geralt of rivia#the witcher#fanfic

if any other michiganders want to weigh in on this, please please feel free to!!
the michigan that we get in canon really does not give detroit or even grand rapids vibes to me, which are the two major cities in michigan.
instead we get a michigan that seems to be more liberal than most of the other swing states depicted in the series. hunting was only mentioned once with michigan, which i feel rules out northern michigan (we don't see any UP at all which i find a little wild). instead, the canon michigan feels like a mix of lansing and ann arbor to me. which in theory should make sense that the capital represents michigan, but lansing is the fourth largest city in michigan and i feel like it doesn't really represent the state as a whole.
also as i mentioned before, michigan always felt like one of the blue states in the series, when in reality, michigan is more of a swing state like wisconsin and pennsylvania, which don't have as strong of opinions on politics as michigan does. because of this, i get hints of ann arbor as well, being a very liberal college town.
i've always found ben's representation of michigan to be a little odd, especially with so little detroit represented in his character. the only time we ever got a hint of it was when michigan mentioned speaking arabic, but that is definitely dearborn and not detroit. idk i'd just like michigan's character to give us a little more than hating ohio and being more of a blue-leaning state
#i think ben mentioned in the past that he tried to meet people from the different states to weigh in on how to best represent their state#but he also said he didn't get to all of them#and i think michigan is one that he did not get a michigander to talk to#not only was the accent completely wrong in the first video#but we also don't really get much michigan culture mentioned in canon at all#we have ohio's skyline chili and minnesota's duck duck grey duck#but no mention of euchre???#idk thought some people might be interested in this from a michigander's perspective#wttt#wttt michigan

I just want to say, that I agree with almost all of your Critical Role takes and you have 1000% better and more nuanced takes than all of Twitter and I greatly appreciate it! The takes over there regarding Liliana and the gods are just wild and you bring some much needed sanity to the content I see
Thanks! I hope you don't mind because I've been thinking about this re: the Twitter takes but the thing about Twitter and Liliana specifically that I've seen is that there's this really bizarre fetishization of like, the fact that she is a (white) southerner (this also weirdly happened for Birdie though to a much lesser extent, and the person who spearheaded that wasn't even American so I have to assume this is a specific corner of Twitter Culture At Large). And like, here's the thing. It's true that fantasy tends to be very British in its accents, and it's also true that accents in a fantasy world are used to convey the same things we'd assume in our world - RP British for educated, southern American for rural, Cockney for rougher types, etc.
It's also true that laying the exact socioeconomic parallels from our world onto, say, Liliana and Orym (who reads to me as non-regional but I, like Liam, am from the Northeast originally) is a recipe for disaster. Or rather, it's not, but it is going to reaffirm your own biases, some of which are dangerous to reaffirm.
There was a popular post on Tumblr a while back, probably not long after Trump was elected, of someone talking about how they were convincing a relative with the confederate flag towards socialism by appealing to the idea of "isn't in unfair how uneven wealth distribution is and how a small group has so much control" and a number of people were rightfully like "uh, maybe you should focus on the racism" or "hey OP ask your relative who they think that small group in control is because I'm getting a really bad feeling they're going to say it's The Jews." And I feel that a lot of the empathy for Liliana from those spaces feels like that OP. Or in other words: I get that you see your relatives in Liliana. Unfortunately, I cannot help but see me and mine in Orym.
You see someone trapped by circumstance and desperation in a dangerous ideology. I see the fact that I haven't gone to a synagogue in easily 6-7 years without there being a security guard present and usually, the doors locked with someone looking through the window to let you in, and then in the sanctuary there's been an installation so that you can quickly bar all the doors in case an alarm goes off or you hear shots in the lobby.
I think there's a great case for seeing yourself in Imogen, who is in a painful struggle with the fact that her mother does love her very much but is in dangerously deep and has done a number of incredibly terrible and harmful things. That latter point is important, incidentally; I get that cult members sometimes rise through the ranks but all but the leader are being manipulated. But the fact remains that a brainwashed person can still commit atrocities, and in this story, they have, many times over. It's especially true because like...sure, plenty of people are like "I lost my relative to a cult and I just want them back and I couldn't harm them," but also, as we've seen, this cult can and will harm Imogen! Plenty of people are also like "yeah I gotta cut them off, it hurts but unfortunately my horribly bigoted and violent relative, while a victim of brainwashing, is a threat to me too." It's not even the full picture of the Temult side of things, let alone the picture that includes the Vanguard's victims.
I also think the Southern gatekeeping is unhinged because it's like. guys there's QAnon members and other cults across the country; the Confederate flag example above was actually notable in that OP wasn't even Southern so you couldn't even write the flag off as deeply misguided heritage but rather was explicitly being used as a hate symbol. It's awfully presumptive to assume all southerners have the same experience (especially since the Temults are portrayed, physically and in accents, as white southerners, not that the experiences of white southerners aren't also incredibly varied). It's awfully presumptive to assume that people find Liliana threatening because they have no personal experience with people like her; often, it's because they have all too real experience with people like her, and it says something even worse about you if you can say "but you guys, I see me and my family in Liliana" when people are telling you that they see them and their families in Orym. I would not, personally, publicly admit that one's empathy extends to the people who remind you of your family but runs out before it reaches their victims. Nor would I publicly admit that I assume everyone who disagrees with me clearly has never had personal experience with this topic.
I should also note that, as I've noted a number of times before, that these are fictional characters and not real people. Twitter seems to be really fucking bad at grasping that. Like, yes, this is the other thing; I do not think that OP should kill their Confederate flag-toting relative, whereas if Imogen did so to Liliana I'd be like "hell yeah." The former is a real person who I do hope gets deprogrammed, just, you know, maybe adjust those priorities; the latter is a fictional character in a story.
#answered#anonymous#if steel had a southern accent do you think people would feel differently about her? sound off in the comments i guess.#cr spoilers#it really is like. with the people who can't separate characters from real people...there's this assumption#that everyone who doesn't agree with them lacks the same experiences or is bigoted#don't like liliana? well it's because you're not southern. don't like laudna? it's because you're neurotypical and straight and hate women.#notice how none of these carry within them any argument within the text? notice how they just rely on the assumption#that you can only understand things through direct personal experience and not like...thought and empathy?#that if you fit certain demographics you obviously Will hold these exact opinions bc clearly all nd people or wlw are a monolith?#it's like. yeah man i see why you have more sympathy for the vanguard than their victims...you think like a cultist even if you're not one#you say There's Those Who Understand And Have The Mandate of Heaven Because We're (southern or nd or queer or whatever)#and then there's Them The Ones Who Don't Get It And Never Will Bc They're Not Like Us (even though plenty of times...they are)#anyway. as always i am sorry that twitter sucking hurts the careers of countless creatives#but i think it does foster this sort of no-nuance no-argument Me First thinking so. can't be too sorry.#long post

I've been thinking a lot about art and why it doesn't feel good anymore, and a lot of what I keep coming back to is a) simply not being happy with my style, but b) not feeling comfortable experimenting because I feel like I need things to be """post worthy""" 🙄 so like... it's kind of a vicious cycle lmao so I'm heeding the advice I used to give people trying to overcome perfectionism which was "don't worry about making things that are 'good enough' to post and just post everything."
So... some vague style experimenting 🤷♂️ and also a sketch of Ilya from forever ago that I really liked but kept thinking I would come back and do more with.
#ghost city#maksim girard#ilya kasharin#I forgot Maksim's tattoos AND his little neck ridges in the headshots but oh welllllll#artbyrom#me: my struggles with art are deeply rooted and totally unique to me and I could never hope to explain them to anyone else#-describes two of the most common struggles for artists on social media ever-#I'm still happy with my general approach to lineart and the flat colors with minimal accent shading#and I even really like the thing I've done a couple times now of selectively coloring the lineart#so the issue I'm having is with like... the fundamental base of the art 😬#so many of the artists I really admire have very minimalist highly stylized ways of drawing people and I want so badly to pursue that#I never really wanted my art to have this more semi-realistic look to it :| but I'm like...#I don't feel confident in my ability to portray a specific face unless I detail it to hell and back#I need to find a way to get comfortable with forms that are more... representational#fuck.... y'know a lot of it might come down to how outspoken my ex was about how much he disliked simplistic and representational styles#lol. lmao.
