I REALLY need to stop drawing for now because doing so is inconvenient and uncomfortable but I really wanted to get some stuff out for this AU because I have MANY ideas for it- So!!!!! Here's my take on an ISAT roleswap!!
This is Time Spent Among Stars (TSAS)! I've been brainstorming a lot for it during the past couple of days. If you know me, you know how I go about swap AU's. I try to make things as logical and faithful to both the characters and the universe and the original story as a whole.
When it comes to a roleswap for ISAT, I find it to be a very particular task. This is because ISAT happens for very specific reasons that all stem from Siffrin and the current circumstances he's in. So, go for a roleswap where the circumstances are a bit different. But I also don't want to retread on the story ISAT already told. By that I mean, for example, Twinkle is NOT Bonnie. I wonder who they could be? Alongside this is the fact that is not neccessarily a story about Bonnie needing to learn to talk about feelings or whatever with the fact that they want to stay with the party longer. That is NOT their issue to tackle, that is Siffrin's.
There's also the whole star theme. I always kind of dislike when swap AU's still include star theming and a star Loop equivalent because stars are SIFFRIN'S THING. Now you may be confused. because. hey Sock. you did that with this AU? YES. YES I DID. BUT I FOUND A WAY TO STILL CONNECT IT BACK TO BONNIE REASONABLY AND GAVE THIS AU A REASON TO STILL HAVE ITS CONNECTION TO STARS AND THE COUNTRY AND WHATNOT. GUYS I GOT IT UNDER CONTROL. AND THERE IS A REASON TWINKLE IS A STAR CHARACTER.
That's not enough preamble though- I'll put this under the cut, here's my more specific thoughts on some things and the swaps!
Bonnie is the Traveler (The Runaway)
A little kid living on the streets of Bambouche. They had washed up on shore in another town where they were tossed around foster families. They eventually ran away as none of these homes felt like theirs. They didnât have many memories and didnât want their memories to be with these people. Similarly to canon, after Bambouche was frozen by the curse, Bonnie ran and ran and ran from the town to the brink of exhaustion before being found by the party. When Bonnie was younger, Petronille ran away from home with them. They came from an abusive home. The night was stormy and yet Nille decided to escape by boat. They got close to country which was actively being forgotten. Nille fell from the boat, injured, but young Bonnie was fine and their boat wasnât close enough to join. They would float back to Vaugarde with tampered memories.
Isabeau is the Housemaiden (The Missionary)
When he first went to his local House of Change, he was so inspired and interested in it all that he decided to stay and join the House. He does a lot of mission work, going around Vaugarde to teach the Change belief and whatnot.
Mirabelle is the Fighter (The Warrior)
She felt betrayed and confused and broken after Euphrasie betrayed everyone and did this to Vaugarde. She questioned everything. But she knew there was no time for that. She had to save her country. She felt obligated. She was still blessed by Euphrasie, an action done in the hope that Mirabelle would stay with her and watch the worlds perfection be frozen in time. She reufsed. She became more of a fighter after leaving on her journey, growing much more stressed and a little more on edge. She often doesnât know her strength.
Siffrin is the Researcher (The Archivist)Â
He made a different choice. Instead of letting their hazy baggage hold them back, they wanted answers. If they could never fit in here, he would figure out where he came from and why. Heâs spent much of his new life in Vaugarde researching both Vaugarde itself and the mysterious tale of the country he believes they come from. Theyâre a little quieter and more stern and factual here, but theyâre still loveable punny Sif.
Odile is the Chef (The Kid)
A talented chef who takes âtoo many cooks in the kitchenâ to heart and often flew solo. Here sheâs more interested in the recipes and food culture of Vaugarde. Instead of a familytale, sheâs looking for something else- A book that is like a familytale but for family recipes. Recipes for meals or baked goods can tell you a lot about a family and their history. Itâs unique to them. You can tell a lot from them by them if you know how to look. She never had these sorts of meals or recipe books back home. Not one genre of food she could resonate with personally because of her divide between Ka Bue and Vaugarde.
Euphrasie as the King (The Housemaiden}
Claude, her dearest, was killed in an accident regarding one of her creations. It broke her. It got Euphrasie rethinking everything. She didnât want things to change anymore. She loved how things were. She didnât want Mirabelle to change, she was happy. She didnât want Rorey to change, he was doing so much better than when she first met him. She broke down. She wanted the entirety of Vaugarde to stay in this same peaceful happy moment. Not to mention now understanding the terror of the idea of losing her country like Rorey (The King) did.
A lot of other details are relatively the same because these are still the same characters, theyâve just gone through some different circumstances that put them in different roles. Mirabelle is still âthe chosen oneâ and gathers the party. Isabeau is still second to be recruited. Siffrin still doesnât talk about his feelings (but will have a friend quest where Bonnie helps them with that). Odile, like how she wouldnât say what she was researching, now wonât tell them what kind of chef she is. Bonnie still isnât allowed to fight. Etc etc etc.
A lot of these are still concepts and are subject to change but I would love to answer questions and doodle some more when I'm not tired LMAO. Merry Christmas Eve, may Time Spent Among Stars woe be upon ye!

Do you have ao3? Also can you continue my wife? đ„ș I almost cried but i dont know in which part. If it's because of the story or because it's unfinished or i got left hanging. But Great work though đ
Hiii! I don't have ao3, my girlfriend explained to me what it was because I had no idea honestly, I was even researching a little of it, but I prefer more tumblr because I feel it more personal.
Thank you for the comment, I really love this kind of interaction đ„șâš
-My wife- Part 2
Part 1
Pairing: Agatha Harkness x Reader-Agatha Harkness x Rio
Gender:soft, hurt
Warnings: insults and mention of death. Spoilers from the series.
Summary: after loosing your wife, you beg the witch to take you to the road to find her. But with no hope of finding her, you want to come back home.
You sighed looking at the notebook in your hands, since you had been sent to do a report on the hex when it started expanding and you got trapped inside, that was going to be your great opportunity to do your great report and go famous on the news side, but since Wanda retired from the city and released everyone from her control, you no longer had your main source or your main character and it was more difficult to make the story happen.
Frustrated by not knowing how to follow your report, you put your notebook in your bag and continued with your grocery shopping
-"Hello... Did you find everything you needed?" - a kind lady asked you from the cash register while you put your items on the band. You looked up and she smiled, she had a delicate but mischievous smile and her light eyes sparked with the stores lights. You squinted your eyes to read her name tag since you were not using your glasses. "Agnnes" a sweet name
-"Y-yes" - for some reason your voice trembled-"Thank you... Can you add some gum please?" - You didn't knew why but you made your voice sweeter than how you usually talked and she nodded.
When you finished paying, you went to where you were staying to eat the junk food and the chips you bought and try to keep writing your notes, but not matter how many times you checked your purse or the bags, you couldn't find your notebook with all your important notes.
Before the tears of desesperation could fill your eyes, you started to retake your previous steps hoping to find it somewhere, but when you got to the store, the doors were already closed.
Defeated, you came back home, praying to God that your notebook would be there tomorrow.
The next day you went back to the store before they could open the doors to the people, your heart racing with nerves, yesterday's frustration still lingering on your body. Wanda was gone and if you lost that book all your first handed Intel would be gone too.
Your leg bounced on the concrete looking at the doors and your reflection on it. Agnes, the cashier from the day before stood beside you looking at the close doors
-"What are we looking for?" - she asked leaning closer to you and you turned to look at her
-"Agnes..."-her name sounded so sweet on your lips-"I lost something yesterday and I think is here... I hope is here" - Your voice sounded like a plea to the gods
-"What did you loose?" - she asked with worry on her eyes
-"A black notebook with some silly drawings on the cover... It has my notes for work and I had some important Intel on it and I need it"-You really sounded desperate
-"Intel on what?" - she asked curious
-"On some local news... You know, the kidnapping of the whole town and all... You don't remember if yesterday someone brought you a lost notebook?" - You looked into her eyes and she held her bag tighter
-"I shouldn't let people from the outside come in before we open, but follow me, let's check the lost and found" - she took your hand and pulled you to the side of the store. Her fingers where holding you tight and that made you smile a little, her hands were soft and they had the perfect size to hold yours.
She opened the side door and pulled you inside with her, looking for the office without letting you go.
When you finally got there, she pulled a box from the closet and put it on top of a desk, letting you search for the notebook without any luck.
She stared at your face, looking how your eyes got watery when you searched the box for the second time hoping that it would appear
-"Hey..."-she took your hand again stopping your search-"Let's check the store together..."-she whispered and you nodded. Even at the risk of losing her job if someone looked at the cameras and saw that she had let someone from outside the company in before they even opened, she helped you look for the notebook all over the store.
-"I think I got it!!"-she yelled and you ran towards her, when you saw her holding your notebook proudly on her hands, you let out a loud yelling of happiness and hugged her tightly
-"Oh my god! You are a life saver Agnes!" - You couldn't stop holding her and she laughed
-"How do you know my name? I've never told you... And I don't know yours either now that I think about it..."-she whispered and you let her go laughing a little embarrassed when she handle you the notebook
-"I saw it yesterday on your name tag... I'm (Y/N) by the way... Thank you so much for this..."-you looked at the book in your hand and she smiled
-"Lovely name..." - she whispered looking at your smile and you blushed a little under her intense gaze
-"Do you want want to go for a coffee? It's on me..."-you boldly offered and she smiled sadly
-"I have to work..."-she answered and you felt a little disappointed without knowing why
-"Rigth, of course, I'm sorry" - You tried to quickly excuse yourself
-"But my shift finish at 6... Maybe we can go for dinner?" - she asked and your smile grew
-"I would love that" - You wrote your number on a piece of paper from your notebook and gave it to her-"See you soon, thank you again!" - You smiled and let her go on with her day.
That first dinner was surprisingly good, the conversation seemed to have no end and she picked an excellent spot that you haven't seen before in that small town. She was sarcastic and funny, she knew how to flirt and she was charming and gorgeous and you couldn't get enough of her.
So after that nigth, after a couple days, you came back to her store to buy something only to have an excuse to see her again and talk to her. And then you repeatedly did the same until you started dating.
After a year together you got married and moved to Agnes' house, and a year after that, you started the process to have a baby together.
At some point along the way, you didn't know exactly when, you realized that she was a witch. If you connected the dots that she lived almost next door to where the scarlet witch was but still didn't remember her, or that some of her books at home were in Latin and talked about spells, or that she herself did a "joke" spell before you got pregnant and it worked... It seemed very obvious what she was...But she seemed like a nice witch.
You as a reporter got interested in her and started to study all the books that she had and all the story behind her, you found out that she was Agatha Harkness a powerful old witch, but for you she was your sweet and perfect Aggy.
When she started to get lost in her own mind, you used all the things you had learned to break her spell, and when your Aggy was lost behind the powerful Agatha Harkness, you used the song of the road that she used to sing to your belly, to try to bring her back again.
But now you were stuck on the stupid road with no hopes of bringing her back and no idea how to get back home.
You took your notebook with spells out of your pocket and you saw how it was filled with memories, notes, phrases and information all involving Agatha... All the things you investigated for her and now she couldn't even remember you or cared about you being pregnant or about what you have done for her. Rage and sadness filled your body and you throw the book away, seeing how it fell outside of the road and the dirt consumed it. You signed and sat on the dirt, desperate tears filled your eyes and and you hug your legs
-"I want to get out..."-you whispered between sobs
-On the other side of the road-
-"Hughhh, stop it!" - Agatha yelled grabbing her head, she didn't knew how, but every time you thought about something or remembered anything, she could feel it on her head too and that was really anoying to her, her mind was usually so calm and yours was so loud.
-"Agatha... Let's go bact to her, I think we need her, we've been walking for hours and we have no test ahead, clearly the road wants her with us..."-Lilia said worried about you being alone
-"The road is bullshit..."-she murmured between her teeth-"Let's sleep a little, we can keep going in a few hours" - she said firmly and nobody dared to say anything else about it because they were scared of making her more angry.
While everyone slept, Agatha thouth about you, specially about the baby, she didn't knew if you were telling the truth but she was intrigued about it, if she started a family with you, you must be really important to her, important enough to move on after all this time.
A glimpse of something shiny on the middle of the road cough her eyes, she stood up and grabbed a dusty notebook, your notebook. She recognized it immediately because you had it all the time in your hands. When she open it, the first thing she saw was a lyrics of a song, her original song that she used to sing with Nicky. The only other person that knew that song was her and Rio, but apparently she sang that song to you at some point and you save it on your notes.
She also saw full paragraphs about her, a drawing of her pin, notes about enchantments, a list of songs and baby names... Baby names, she remembered picking baby names with you a few days ago when the pregnancy test came out positive, she remembered you on the bathroom of the house, crying and hugging her.
She kept reading the book, it was like a diary about your and her life together, every important thing was inside it, even a few pictures, including ones of the wedding you had. You seemed so happy with her, nobody has never smiled so much because of her, and in all the pictures she was smiling even bigger looking at you. Her heart started clenching more each time she read a new page, she could feel your love in your notes, until she reached one in particular
"Even if you don't recognize me anymore and you don't remember the love you had for me, the love I have will cover for the both of us..."
She remember when you told her that when she tried to kick you out of the house and that made a clic on her head, Agatha remembered, finally she remembered everything.
How you met, that spark, your first time together, when you got married, when you decided to have the baby and how you took care of her when she started to loose it...
She remember how you stayed by her side always. Even when she no longer recognized you, and unless you followed the silly illusion her head was living in, she wasn't able to see or hear you either, you stayed. Even though she no longer knew who you were, you made a vow with her and wanted to take care of her while she was "sick", so you found a way to help her eat or shower. You pretended to be a waitress and tell her she was on a restaurant so she would eat her food and pretend to be a masseur on a spa so she would shower. Agatha remember that, remembered your care and your worry even when she treated you badly, she remembered your love for her...she remembered all that and fell for you again, she finally remembered her love for you.
-"Fuck!" - she closed the book feeling like an asshole
-"They are coming!" - Lilia woke up scared, telling the others that the Salem seven where close. Agatha grabbed her coat
-"Let's go, we need to find her before they can hurt her" - she ordered and the others followed her.
-On your side of the road-
After a few minutes of crying you also fell asleep and when you woke up, you were no longer on the road, you were on your confy bed, hugged by the covers. You sighed in relief and snuggled more into the comfort of the mattress thinking that all that had hapend was just a bad dream
-"Are you planning on staying on that bed all day?" - a deep voice took you out of your peaceful place and you sat on the bed scared to see Rio sitting at the edge of it. If you were still on a dream, she was a completely nightmare following you everywhere
-"How did I got here? What are you doing here? What do you want? If you want Agatha go ahead, I don't care anymore"-saying those words made your heart hurt, but you were tired of trying to get love from the witch with no results at all
-"She hates me, she doesn't want to be with me or see me... Remember that conversation around the fire? she is my scar... I don't know if you know this but we had a son together many many years ago... But he was sick and it was my fault, I tried to give them more time together and she tried to keep him away from me, but eventually I had to do my job and he had to come with me... Agatha never forgave me for it and I didn't forgave myself either..."-she talked with her serious face as always and you couldn't avoid the feeling that you were in danger with her close
-"If you want me to feel sorry for you, telling me that you had to kill your son, it's not helping..."-you whispered
-"I took you out of the road..."-she confessed and surprised you-"You wanted to get out and the Salem seven where very close to you while you slept so I took you out... Because Agatha wouldn't forget me ever if I had to take another one of her children away... Or her wife..."-the word wife was painful to her, you were having the life that they could never had, but she would do anything to see Agatha happy
-"That's... Thank you..."-you didn't knew what to said, you figured that she was death itself when she told you that she was "THE" green witch, but she was bending the rules of life for Agatha
-"Don't... Just take care of her okay?... And close that fucking door to the "road", like now"-she order and you stood from the bed
-"How do you want me to do that? I have no powers..."-you asked confused
-"You created it, you can close it... Or he can, you just have to let his powers control you again" - she told you pointing to your almost invisible belly. The baby was made from Agatha's spell, it made sense that you had power while he was inside you. When you turned to look at her, she was gone already.
Still confused, you ran to the basement and grabbed a piece of chalk and a few candles, remembering the spells that you had studied, you started to repeat the Latin words over and over until you saw the door desapear. Tired and a little confused of what you were capable of, you sat at the floor trying to catch your breath, hoping that Agatha and the others would find a way out.
Meanwhile inside the road, Agatha and the others were running looking for you and screaming your name when she noticed how the sky of the road started to shrink and how the trees beside them began to desapear, little by little everything started to fade around them
-"Fuck! Off the road! Let's go to the mud people, let it swallow you" - Lilia yelled, she saw this happening before and she knew what they had to do even if she didn't knew why. Although they were not quite sure if Lilia was in her right mind on that moment, they decided to listen as it seemed to be the only possible option. They all waded into the mud and fell under the road right next to an exit, using it to escape safely just in time before the place collapsed behind them
-"Well... That happened..."-the protection witch said breathing heavily
-"Its this another test?" - The potion witch asked
-"I think we are truly out..."-Lilia said.
Apparently they had come out in some underground construction and Agatha didn't waste a second in running out looking for a way out to see if she could find you
-"What about the end of the road?!" - they asked running behind her
-"I don't care about that, I need to find my wife!" - The purple witch screamed and when she finally got outside and saw that they weren't so far away from her house, she breathe out in relief. Immediately she went to the house, and when she was about to open the backyard door, the color left her skin when the door opened alone and she saw death itself leaving the house, Agatha couldn't avoid imagining the worse, that she was there to claim your body because you couldn't get out of the road in time
-"Please no..."-The witch begged her ex lover, but the green witch just walked away without saying anything else. Agatha opened the door with shaky hands and the others followed her closely
-"Aggy! Lilia! You are all okay!" - Your voice pierced their ears as your body crushed against them hugging them all taking them by surprise
-"I thought I lost you" - Agatha's voice was broken, vulnerable as she hugged you alone, closer to her-"I thought I had lost you after being an asshole to you, I... I'm sorry... I remember you, all you did for me, I remember how much we love each other, how much I love you" - she whispered pressing her forehead against yours and letting one of her hands rest against your belly. You smiled feeling safe and happy again. But your happiness ended quickly when you saw how the sky turned gray
-"Oh no... They got out too" - Lilia said watching how the Salem seven where walking down the street
-"Look guys, this is my fight, you don't need to be here... " - Agatha said but got interrupted
-"This is not the time to be good Agatha after being a bitch all this time..."-Jennifer said
-"We will protect you... After all that's what convens are for" - Alice said looking at you and then at Agatha- "I will blast you... Just don't take it all..."-she said and the purple witch nodded...
-9 months later-
-"He is gorgeous..."-Lilia said holding your baby on her arms for the first time. The little baby held her fingers in his little hand watching all the women around hin
-"He is, but now it's time for Aunty Aliceee to hold himmm" - The protection witch said excited in a pitchy voice while you watched them from your hospital bed
-"No! I was the second one to hold David, come on!" - Jennifer started fighting with the other witches making you laugh. You named your baby in honor of your neighbor that you lost on the road.
-"Love come here..."-you whispered to Agatha who was looking outside from the window. She gave a last look and closed the blinds smiling at you-"Are you okay?" - You asked and she nodded, happy to see that death was nowhere to be seen meaning that you and the baby where healthy and safe
-"Never better, I got everything that I need rigth here" - she kissed your forehead and hugged you protectively whispering sweet things on your hear.

Hello NK Jemisin! I'm a huge fan of yours, and I wanted to thank you for writing all of the books you've written, and doing all that you do. You're really awesome and you are doing important work! :) I had a long question, if you have time to answer! What's your commentary on creating fantasy cultures, using real ones as inspiration? You've done this before in your stories, and I wanted to know if you had any guidance on doing it well. I'm writing my first novel right now (fantasy!) and am dealing with a surprising amount of guilt regarding using real cultures as a basis for my fake ones. On one hand, I want to create a really unique fantasy world, not the bog-standard European stuff. It's not only more interesting to me, but I also admittedly want to use my story to help introduce people to concepts that might be helpful in the real world, help readers understand what these real people go through and perhaps inspire change. On the OTHER hand, I don't know if it's 'my place' to do so (I'm Black btw, but I'm not just writing about Black-coded fantasy characters). And I'm worried about representing people in a harmful way, even if it's by accident. I'm even hung up about names! Should I use names from real languages related to the cultures I'm inspired by, or should I just make them up to emphasize that, while yes these people are clearly inspired by real cultures, they are ultimately *their own* thing. I'm really conflicted on this and am hoping you can offer some feedback and/or commentary. Sorry for the long ask. Either way, have a great day and I look forward to whatever work you do next!
If I can rephrase what you're saying here, it sounds like you're concerned about cultural appropriation -- specifically, which cultures you get to "borrow from" and "remix," how much remixing you can do before you've done damage, how to depict people from cultural backgrounds other than your own, etc.
If that's what you're asking, then there are whole schools of thought on how to "appropriate appropriately." A lot of thinking on this has evolved in the past few years, for good and for ill; Own Voices, for example. (The short version: the Own Voices hashtag movement started as a grassroots attempt to get marginalized voices telling the stories of their own cultures, because there's been a nasty trend of only white/Western/Anglophone/etc. authors publishing books about those cultures. The problem? Some publishers and readers started acting as if marginalized writers weren't allowed to do anything but stories in their own cultures -- a restriction, instead of an inclusion/correction. Worse, publishers, etc started using it as a marketing shorthand, in ways that were just... not good. They made it weird, basically.) But I'm still fond of the approach that's in Writing the Other, by Nisi Shawl and Cynthia Ward. It's centered on ethnicity/race, but a lot of its approach can be extrapolated to culture. There's too much good stuff in this book to summarize it easily, but you should read it instead of a summary anyway -- it's short.
I don't see the point of guilt, when it comes to something like this. Guilt is what you feel when you've done something wrong, and admiring another culture enough to want to tell a story featuring it isn't wrong. However, there are things you need to do -- research, conversations, considerations of power dynamics -- to reduce the harm you might end up doing by telling that story as an outsider. And note that no matter what you do, though, you might still end up doing harm. (Even people writing about their own culture can end up doing that.) If you fuck up, apologize, figure out what went wrong, and try to do better next time. That's really all you can do.
And then write whatever the hell you want. There's a persistent pressure on Black writers to only cover certain subjects, certain settings; nah. We get to have range, too. You've just got to put in the work to do it well.
Good luck.

Only the masterpieces that survive the fiercest flames earn their place in history.
(Analysis post)
Alright, they absolutely cooked this update. Like, undeniably so. I was admittedly not that huge of a fan of the last 2 beast yeast chapters we got; they had really good ideas, and Mystic Flour is a wonderful character, but... Dark Cacao hasn't really been done enough with for it to feel like it had the amount of weight it could have, and it really doesn't feel like much about him actually changed at all. Combine that with a complete lack of interesting dynamics and you have a lot of very good and genuinely pretty well thought out story concepts with extensive cultural research, executed in a way that feels more like a traditional old-school story that weakens the attachment the audience feels to the components of said story.
Here, though? I have no complaints so far. It was absolutely wild in fact, to the point where I don't think it's gonna happen again (nor am I entirely sure it should ever happen again). This was back to back, non-stop, smack to the face one after the other. The moment the first point of conflict came up, it was just shit happening left and right; even in the mandatory moment of rest where we chill out for a bit, it's revealed that hey, these sandstorms? Yeah the sand is actually ashes. It's the remains of all the people that live here. Whether they died off on their own or were killed by someone else.
And if that wasn't enough, very shortly after;
... It's fucking crack.
So, people die and kill each other here very frequently, and not only are their remains visibly on display, their ashes also become sandstorms that make it near impossible to navigate the land; on top of being something that people snort like cocaine to become more energetic and aggressive.
We started fucking wild, dude. This whole thing is pulling no punches.
Though, I do wanna note; I really, really enjoyed the interactions between Smoked Cheese and Golden Cheese. It shows not only how forgiving she is, but how these two have known each other for an incredibly long time, and know each other well. They're incredibly comfortable around each other, despite it all, and despite how brazen and Very Much Not Strategic the queen here can be. I really, really enjoyed them.
Always fun to see a recovering villain do things for good, but in their own unique way that's still not exactly heroic but definitely effective and, at times, very gratifying.
Though I enjoyed all this, there's one thing I wanna talk about above all else.
The star of the show. Note that every single part was enjoyable, of course, and he wouldn't be half as interesting without Golden Cheese Cookie to serve as a parallel, but they've cooked up something special here.
So far, Burning Spice's extent of onscreen appearance is very, very short, but... I don't think I need to tell you that he's already made an impact and a half.
Christ, that's violent. With the sound effects and everything too, god damn. But, I'd be lying if I said this wasn't a pretty superficial source of judgement for this character. It's very very telling of what kind of person he is now, what he's all about, what he's willing to do, what he likes doing, but...
More than anyone else in recent memory, the devil is in the details. So let's look at those details.
Nothing too much so far, other than how much he absolutely loves destruction, but there's already a trend; namely on "Nothing lasts forever. It's as simple as that", "In the end, everything becomes dust.", and "You, too, shall see that destruction is the only way.". There seems to be an infatuation with the natural process of everything fading away, turning to dust and dying out. An entirely honest one, believing that there is just about nothing else to life. These will be important to keep in mind.
Here, we see a bit of his current relationship with his own immortality. He doesn't seem to mind the idea of losing it, finding something that may eventually take him down, but he still takes great pride in it. These lines, in text, seem somewhat miserable (and trust me, they definitely are), but the voicework in just about every language conveys that they are said in a more neutral, even potentially proudly manner. Again, not much on their own, but...
Here's where we get into the fun part.
This. This is the crux of their character. At the start, him and Golden Cheese cookie were more or less the same. Benevolent royalty, close and personal with their subjects. Beloved, and loving.
And then, they lost it all.
One way or another, their kingdoms were lost, reduced to almost nothing. They were overcome by grief, desperate, unable to cope with their loss. One tried to latch on as hard as possible. Preserve what she could, blindly, replacing the harsh truth of reality with an idealized, constructed world, where no one would ever have to know pain ever again. She shut herself off, and retreated in the safety and peace of a false reality. She would rather have lied to both herself and all her subjects than face reality. And eventually, she had to learn to move on. Let herself and her kingdom heal more naturally, facing reality. The other, meanwhile, was desperate to let go. He detached himself, trying to move past the pain of loss. But, of course, he couldn't force it to happen. No one can. And so with the grief of losing that which he held dear, continuing to be faced with the reality that nothing is forever, over and over, while he endured, the world slowly turning to ash around them again and again... It's no wonder something in there eventually cracked.
What will it take to destroy me. Nothing is forever, and yet, I am.
Nothing is forever. And yet, I am.
With time, misery turned to mania, and in an attempt to overcome their grief, they embraced it, in the worst way possible. A coping mechanism gone horrendously wrong. That destruction, that loss, the inevitability of death... It's not painful, no. It doesn't have to be. It can be thrilling. Exhilarating. A new reason to live. If all you care about turns to dust anyways, if that's really the only logical destination... Why not have some fun with it? Why not embody that inevitable, unstoppable force? Why not become what you fear, so you no longer have to be afraid anymore?
... You know, at least that's what I think is going on here. The next chapter could contradict this reading, but... From what all we have right now, it seems like Golden Cheese and Burning Spice are two completely different paths for the exact same type of pain. They are, in a way, the same, but diverge in almost complete opposite ways where it counts.
Spice is genuinely equal parts absolutely terrifying and absolutely miserable; a balance that is incredibly hard to strike in writing, but always absolutely fascinating and wonderful to observe when it happens. I have to say, the more I found out about them, the more I couldn't keep my eyes off everything they have going on.
I'm loving every little bit of this update. Mad props to the devs for cooking something up here that I am genuinely incredibly invested in, almost to the same degree as White Lily and Dark Enchantress. Banger update. Absolute S tier material.
TL;DR: Burning Spice is terrifying, miserable, and ridiculously cool. Everything about this update was an absolute merciless flurry of consecutive gut-punches. And I loved every second of it.
... Now we sit and wait for Shadow Milk's release next year.

Otherworldly Attraction âËđźâ đ đ đąđđđđ đđđđđąđđĄđđ
yandere!jjk x f!reader
yandere, reverse harem, isekai, jujutsu kaisen x fem!reader, slowburn, slowburn yandere
You don't know how or why, but you've been isekai'd into the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. Although your first instinct is to stay away from the plot, you've been blessed with an abnormal amount of cursed energy, and for better or worse, you find yourself sucked into the storyline. You decide that you may as well use your newfound powers for the greater good, and if you're lucky, you might succeed in rewriting some of the characters' fates. But it turns out that your presence in this world is an even bigger deal than you first thought, and soon, everyone wants to make you theirs.

The door slides open to reveal two students, a girl and a boy, sitting around a table while they eat their lunches. Itadori steps inside, still grinning widely, and their heads turn at the sound of his voice.
âHey, guys! I just dropped by for lunch, if thatâs okay. Oh, and I brought a friend! This is [Name],â he happily introduces.Â
Youâre too stunned by the fact that he just referred to you as his friend to process much else, and by that point, the two students have already stood up.Â
âItâs nice to meet you, [Name],â the girl greets with a smile. âIâm Sasaki, a second-year.âÂ
âAnd Iâm Iguchi, also a second-year,â the boy chimes in.Â
Needless to say, you already know who they are, too. Even though it was indirect on their part, theyâre largely the reason why Itadori ends up at Jujutsu High, thanks to the fateful events of a certain night spent on school grounds.Â
At this point in time, Itadori has yet to give them Sukunaâs finger. Youâre not sure exactly when itâll happen, but there will probably be some warning signs, like Fushiguro showing up on campus to look for it.Â
Still, for obvious reasons, you feel like you shouldnât get too involved with these two. The plot is going to proceed normally, as it should. Youâre worried that something might go wrong with your interference. Itâs probably best if you keep your distance, andâ
âWould you like to join the Occult Research Club?!âÂ
â...âÂ
Yeah, you probably shouldâve expected that.Â
Itadori laughs. âCome on, guys. I didnât bring her here to try and recruit her. I just wanted to introduce all three of you! Iâm not sure if [Name]âs into that kind of stuff, anyways. Itâs not really everyoneâs thing.âÂ
âItâs true,â you nod. âIâm, uh, not that great with scary stuffâŠâÂ
âThereâs nothing scary about the paranormal!â Sasaki insists. âItâs just interesting! Mysterious! Imagine what could be out there! Donât you have a thirst for the unknown?âÂ
Itâs precisely because I do know whatâs out there that Iâm scaredâŠ
âSasaki, youâre coming on way too strong,â Iguchi chides. He turns to offer you a reassuring smile. âDonât worry. We just canât help but get excited when new people show up to our club room, but we know this kind of thing canât be forced. You two are more than welcome to stay here during lunch.â
To some extent, you canât help but feel a bit bad, because you know how passionate they are, and soon, Itadori wonât be around to keep them company anymore. He has no choice but to go to Jujutsu High. Itâs his fate as the protagonist of this world.Â
You know you canât possibly be a substitute for someone as irreplaceable as Itadori, but once all the craziness with Sukunaâs finger passes, youâd be happy to be their friend, if theyâll have you.
âOoh, your lunch looks really good, [Name],â Itadori remarks once you sit down and unpack your bento box.
âThanks,â you smile. âIâve been cooking for a while. My mom cooks too, but I just got used to making food for myself. The process helps me take my mind off things. Itâs kind of therapeutic, in a way.âÂ
Seeing as being sucked into a fictional world is kind ofâor rather, really fucking insane, itâs safe to say that you cooked up a storm when you got home yesterday. You packed up most of the leftovers for lunch today, so the food didnât go to waste, but still. You ended up emptying a good portion of the fridge.
Itadori takes a big bite out of his onigiri, but he keeps eyeing your lunch all the while, so you chuckle and push the bento box closer to him.
âGo ahead,â you encourage. âYou can have some if you want.âÂ
âCan I really?â he blinks, a few pieces of rice stuck to his cheek. Itâs kind of ridiculous how adorable this guy is. You have the sudden urge to pull him into your arms and give him a big squeeze, but mercifully, your intrusive thoughts donât win.Â
âOf course. I packed plenty, so I can afford to share.â
âOhâwait, but earlier, I was saying that Iâd be the one to treat you! I canât just eat your lunch! I still owe you big-time for what I did to you!âÂ
Itadori firmly shakes his head in refusal, then crosses his arms and makes an attempt at what you can only assume is meant to be a stern expression. But again, heâs so ridiculously cute that itâs a bit hard to take him seriously.Â
Sasaki arches a brow. âWhat did you do to her?âÂ
âI, uh, may have hit her in the face with a soccer ball,â Itadori replies, shamefully shrinking in on himself.
He is literally baby.Â
âWhy would you do that?â Iguchi gapes. âCome to think of it, her nose is a little bruisedâŠâÂ
âIt obviously wasnât on purpose!â Itadori protests. He turns towards you with an imploring expression. â[Name], I promise it wasnât on purpose. I swear I would never do something like that!âÂ
You chuckle softly. âI know you wouldnât. You definitely donât seem like that kind of guy.â
Itadori lets out a sigh of relief and resumes munching on his onigiri. Meanwhile, Sasaki stares at you from across the table.Â
âSo⊠[Name],â she says. âYouâre a first-year like Itadori, Iâm assuming?âÂ
âYep.âÂ
âIâve never really seen you around.âÂ
âIâm a new student. I only just transferred in.âÂ
She pauses for a few moments, and you can see her eyes glistening with excitement. âSo, that must mean you havenât joined any clubs yet, right?âÂ
âSasaki, not this again,â Iguchi sighs.Â
âIâm telling you! Not everyone is drawn to the occult right away. It takes trial and error to figure out if itâs something youâre actually interested in. Iâm not saying she has to join our club or anything. But while sheâs here, she should at least dip her toes in, right?âÂ
Before Iguchi can protest on your behalf again, Sasaki grabs a large board from one of the bookshelves and turns towards you with a mischievous grin.Â
â...youâve heard of Kokkuri, right?âÂ
After school, Itadori stops by your classroom.Â
âHey, [Name],â he beams. âThanks for hanging out with all of us during lunch. It was a lot of fun. Hopefully that game of Kokkuri didnât freak you out too much.â
âI had fun too,â you nod. Truthfully, youâve never really been fazed by this kind of stuff. Horror movies and the like donât often get much of a reaction out of you. You never bought into ghosts or vengeful spirits. Well, not in the real world at least.
Unfortunately, in this world, thereâs plenty of freaky shit to go around.Â
âIt means a lot to those guys,â Itadori says, a tinge of sadness to his smile. âWeâre the only people in the school that seem to have an interest in the occult. I signed up for it because I thought itâd be fun, but we just barely meet the three-member minimum. Thanks for going along with it to make them happy, even if itâs not really your kind of thing.âÂ
âThereâs no need to thank me. I know I said I wasnât crazy about scary stuff, but I actually ended up having a good time. Iâm glad you invited me to hang out with you guys,â you smile.Â
Itadori returns your smile with one of his ownâseriously, heâs almost always smiling, but you certainly donât mindâand before you realize it, a phone has been placed into your hand.Â
You blink. âWhatâs this?âÂ
âMy phone,â Itadori replies, still smiling.
âUm, I mean, I know that, but whyâd you give it to me?âÂ
âSo you can give me your number. That way itâll be easier for us to stay in touch!â He pauses, just for a moment, to frown. âOh, but I guess I shouldâve asked if you were okay with it first. I got a little ahead of myself. Would it be cool if we exchanged numbers?âÂ
Abso-fucking-lutely!Â
By some miracle, you manage to reign in your excitement, and instead of hardcore fangirling and squealing out at the top of your lungs, you just nod.Â
âSure thing,â you say, trying to play it cool. Still, despite your best efforts to act indifferent, your fingers are trembling as you pull out your own phone and refer to the number you have saved in a notes app (because you definitely havenât memorized it within less than a day of being here). Once youâre finished inputting your number, you pass your phone over to Itadori so he can do the same.
And just like that, you have a new contact saved. Itadori Yuji. He even added a little smiley-face at the end of his name. God, heâs so fucking cute.Â
âSweet!â Itadori grins. âThanks, [Name]. Iâll be sure to text you lots! Sorry I canât really stick around much longer. I just wanted to stop by real quick before I left to go visit my gramps at the hospital.âÂ
Right. His grandfather. A point deep in your stomach throbs uncomfortably, and youâre hit by a sudden wave of guilt. It feels awful to know that his grandfatherâs end is rapidly approaching. It feels awful to know that you canât change it, or even warn him. All you can do is feign ignorance and hope that he enjoys these fleeting moments while they last.Â
You muster up a smile. âI hope you have a nice day with your grandpa. Feel free to text me whenever.â
âWill do! See ya!âÂ
Itadori waves you off, every bit as cheerful as always. Yet another thing that causes you immense guilt is the knowledge that his happy days wonât last forever. Soon, heâll be thrown into a dark, sinister world that teems with death. A world that, in your opinion, is far too harsh for such a gentle soul.Â
Unfortunately, thereâs nothing you can do about that. Fate will run its course, and you must simply stand by and let it happen.Â
Despite the nice day you had, your spirits are admittedly a bit low as you trudge home, having to consult Oogle Maps in order to find your way around. After being injured yesterday, the nurse called your parents to inform them of what had happened, and your mom came by to pick you up. This is technically your first time finding your way home by yourself. Itâs not just a new school you need time getting used to, but a new home, a new city, a new world⊠all of it is bound to get a little overwhelming at times.
You wish you could say youâre completely aware of your surroundings, but thatâs far from the truth. Every so often, you have to stop and squint towards the street signs to make sure youâre heading the right way. Jujutsu Kaisen is set in a fictional world, of course, but itâs a world modeled off the real world, and thereâs plenty of similarities. This version of Japan is every bit as busy as the real one, for instance. Which is why you keep getting swept up in the crowds and losing your sense of direction.
Still, itâs not rocket science. You can mostly figure out where youâre going. Oogle Maps is idiot-proof, after all. Well, sort of.Â
But the fact remains that youâve never wandered these streets before, and naturally, youâre as disoriented as anyone would be in a foreign place. Hence why you donât notice him until itâs late.Â
A man with long, black hair, whoâs staring right at you.Â
You get jerked around by the crowd of people hurrying home during rush-hour, enough that you end up tripping onto the sidewalk and falling onto your knees. Your socks only reach up to your calves, so unfortunately, your knees get scraped open and start bleeding.Â
Man. Only two days into this isekai thing, and you just canât seem to stop getting hurt.Â
â...are you alright?âÂ
Some guy is speaking to you. Presumably, one of the bystanders that saw you trip. Your cheeks flush, because falling in public is one of the most embarrassing things that can happen, but you instinctively reach out to grab his hand anyway.Â
At the same time, your gaze pans upwards, and his eyes meet yours.Â
Oh, balls.Â
Thatâs the most appropriate response you can think of. After all, the man youâve just had the misfortune of running into is hardly the type to be your friend. Heâs not like Itadori. Heâs not one of the good guys.Â
He is Geto Suguru. Or rather, the curse user thatâs pretending to be him. The real Geto is long dead. He was killed by his former best friend, Gojo.Â
Those scars on his forehead tell you everything you need to know. The curse userâs name is Kenjaku, and he is merely using Getoâs body as a vessel. As things stand, youâre probably the only person who knows his true identity.
Regardless, the details donât matter right now.
Youâre just really fucking scared.Â
Kenjaku pulls you to your feet, and unlike with Itadori, when you wished you could keep holding his hand forever, this time, you pull away viscerally fast, as if youâve just been splashed with hot oil.Â
Naturally, Kenjaku notices.Â
âYou didnât answer my question, miss,â he chuckles, a cunning smile spreading across his lips. âI asked if you were alright. You took quite a tumble there. It must have hurt.âÂ
âI-Iâm fine,â you reply, praying your fear isnât absurdly obvious. You need to stay calm. Thereâs no reason why an ordinary person would be afraid of him, and if you let it show, heâll know somethingâs up.Â
âYour knees are bleeding,â Kenjaku points out. He leans closer to you, and you swear your heart nearly explodes. His dark, thin eyes are even more eerie from up close. âAnd you look like you just saw a ghost. I admit, Iâm a bit worried.â
Thatâs bullshit if youâve ever heard it, but nevertheless, you canât allow your expression to crumble. Thereâs no reason for him to kill you out in public like this. Unlike cursed spirits, people can see him. He wonât risk drawing that kind of attention to himself.Â
Probably.Â
âIâm just⊠socially awkward,â you say, chuckling shyly for added effect. âAnd, uh, Iâm not good at talking to handsome guys like you. I get nervous.âÂ
To be honest, what you just said isnât even a total lie. Sadly.Â
Kenjaku stares at you in silence for a few moments, then smiles yet again, his eyes crinkling at the corners.Â
âIâm flattered by your words,â he muses. âWell, just be careful not to trip again. You got off with a small injury this time, but if youâre not careful, it could be a lot worse. And nobody likes to hurt, do they?âÂ
Itâs hard to tell whether or not that was meant to be a thinly-veiled threat, but you have no intention of sticking around to find out.Â
âThank you for your help, mister. I appreciate it.âÂ
You hastily bow to him, then waste no time before speed-walking away. The further you get, the easier it is to breathe.
But since youâre too scared to look back over your shoulder, you donât realize that Kenjaku is still staring at you with a contemplative look on his face.Â
He hums to himself. âSo much cursed energy. Is she a sorcerer? But something about her seems strange. I just canât put my finger on it.âÂ
Well, no matter. Heâll leave you in peace for now. He canât very well attack you in broad daylight, and he doesnât even know if you pose a threat. There are far too many variables to consider.Â
Besides, something tells him that this wonât be your last meeting.Â

Alrighty it is almost the end of the year so, in no particular order, here are podcasts I recommend of the ones I've listened to this year! (let me tell you picking favourites for this was So hard) (Unfortunately I can't just do all of them because there are almost 50)
Hello From The Hallowoods: The world ended, but we're still here, and shit's weird. (Has made me cry; even the trees are queer; my comfort show<3)
Camp Here And There: Good morning campers! The time is 7:63AM and Cabin Magpie Moth has spontaneously combusted! Whichever one of you little woodworms can put it out first can come get a puffy sticker from me in the Nurses Cabin! (Is it a horror? Is it a comedy? I don't know, you'd have to check to be sure)
Wooden Overcoats: Funn Funerals used to be the only funeral parlor on the island. It isn't anymore. (Sitcom, the main characters are the most miserable wet cats you ever did see)
Re: Dracula: Maybe this year, they'll be okay. Maybe this year they'll all live. Maybe this year he won't go, and she'll be alright.
Magnus Protocol: TMA's louder, bolder, less serious younger sibling.
The Silt Verses: Oh boy. Let me tell you, you will look at crabs differently after this. (WET horror, genuinely the best pod I've ever heard)
Archive 81: Dan, a newly hired archivist, has to listen to and catalogue a set of old audio tapes. The tapes contain interviews conducted by someone Dan has never heard of. Dan is in an isolated bunker in the middle of the woods. Surely nothing will happen to our dear friend Dan. (What is it with archivists and getting snatched by The Horrors? Ignore the tv show it doesn't exist)
Red Valley: Just a couple of guys with an interest in research station Red Valley, whose focus was cryonics. It's completely defunct now. I wonder what happened. (Ethics? What's that?)
Woe.Begone: Some say it's about time-travel, some say it's about keeping yourself and those close to you alive, some say it's about online safety. All can agree on one point: What the fuck why are there cowboys now
Midnight Burger: Midnight Burger is a time-travelling, dimension-spanning diner. Dunno how it works or where it's going next. We open at six! (The episodes are an hour long minimum but it's worth it. Comedy sci-fi, lighthearted fun :)
Old Gods of Appalachia: The Appalachians are spooky y'all. (The narrator's voice is so comforting in this, it feels like campfire stories)
Dreamboy: Went into this pod being told it was made by the people who made WTNV and absolutely no other information. Let me tell you I did not expect the main character to tell us that he got a hard-on in the first episode. (The most sexually explicit pod I've listened to)
The White Vault: Nice little trip to Svalbard to check on the remote research station, surely nothing will go wrong :) (Holy Fucking Shit What Is That) (Recommend 1st season especially to The Thing (1982) enjoyers)
Camlann: Ever wished that you were apart of Welsh folklore or Arthurian legends? Or perhaps some of the last people left on Earth? No? Ah well, you'll pick it up soon enough. (Three idiots and a dog in Wales, fighting for their lives)
Breaker Whiskey: Imagine. Being the only person on earth. Just you. Just you, and someone on the radio. Just you, the radio, and a woman you absolutely do NOT have sexual tension with. (This one looks really long because it has 260+ episodes, but they're like 4 minutes long each so it's not really)
Ethics Town: Don't worry about it. (Cannot recommend enough, it is a mindfuck)
Tell No Tales: What if ghosts were a thing that could infest a place, like rats or roaches or mold? What if it was your job to exterminate them? And the million-pound question, do ghosts deserve rights? (I am waiting so so patiently for the rest of s2)
Remnants: You wake up in a place you recognise. You have always been there. You have no idea where you are. You see a stranger's life. You recognise them. You knew them once, you think. Discard or reshelve? You don't know what that means. It does not matter. Discard or reshelve, that is the question. (I am going insane over this pod)
Not Quite Dead: Vampires! Alfie is an overworked A&E nurse who does not have time for this shit. Unfortunately, he does not have a choice in this matter. (A really interesting take on vampirism, going into the biology. It is fascinating, and an exciting story)
Travelling Light: Space Quaker! Listen to the Traveller tell you about every new planet and civilisation they visit. Whattttt noooo they don't have a crush on one of their crew members what are you taaaalking abouttttt (Very comforting pod, beauty in the mundane in a way? But not mundane because yk. Aliens)
Someone Just Like You: Brilliant horror, just really well written. I don't even have words for it. So far there are only 6 episodes and the concepts/plots of each seem cheesy, but my GOD the execution.
The Bright Sessions: People with powers get therapy! Thank God, they need it so bad. (I love one particular antagonist so much, I need to put him in a microwave)
Poe: Evermore: It wasn't until I started this that I realised that Edgar Allen Poe would have had a Boston-ish accent. Reallyyy interesting story of his life, and I keep getting jumpscared by VAs I recognise. Faulkner Silt Verses what are you doing here.
Witherburn After School News: Your school radio host getting WAY more involved in the news than they should. Really hope they're still breathing. Love the folklore section though!
Before The Tone: Voicemails from someone who just got a job they probably shouldn't have. (Brilliant idea for the format, and great execution)
I Am In Eskew: What if you were trapped? What if you had a home, a wife and a child? What if they aren't real? Are you sure? Go and check. What if your city tried to kill you? What if it loved you very much, more than anyone else? (Horror but the narrator is the saddest wettest man you've ever heard)
Sherlock & Co: Modern day Sherlock Holmes, and John Watson is a true crime podcaster. Dear God I did not think it would be as compelling as it is.
#only going to tag a few from these because there are still 27 on this list and I don't want to clog up too many tags#hfth#remnants pod#ethics town#woe.begone#audio drama#fiction podcasts

"Sleep. I'll keep you safe." - Tom Hanniger Prompt Response
Summary: Tom has taken you hostage. This is not the Tom you knew and fell in love with. Unable to escape, can you get him to trust you and maybe even reach him?
Pairing: Tom Hanniger x Female!Reader
A/N: Prompt from @thelonelyempath. So, just out of the gate, not gonna lie, this is one of the most fucked up things I've ever written and probably the darkest. Story wise I mean. There's something about Tom and that world from the movie that I love exploring. Before I knew it, this was nearing 18K and I was like "Crap, time to wrap this up!" I still enjoyed the exploration of Tom and the reader though in the dynamic they're in during this one.
I tried my best do my research and be respectful in regards to DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) but also keep this a few years post-movie (2009) while also staying within the context the movie provided but also explore a bit, if that makes sense. Please note I do not work in the psychiatry, psychology, or medical fields. If I got anything appallingly incorrect about this disorder, its symptoms, its treaments, anything, please let me know. Also, I think it goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway), not every single person who has been diagnosed with DID is violent or a threat to others nor are their alters violent or a threat to others. Obviously, this is just a work of fanfiction based on a fictional story where the main character had an alter that was violent and a threat to everyone. No harm or disrespect is intended with this fanfiction at all.
Unbeta'd so all mistakes are mine.
Warnings: explicit violence; hostage situation; mentions of knives; dubcon; sex (smut-light); explicit descriptions of murder; mentions of burying a body; explicit threats of physical violence; explicit threat of sexual violence; explicit threat of neonaticide (I highly recommend looking this word up if you don't know what it means so you can decide if you still want to read from there; I didn't feel comfortable spelling it out here to be honest); physical threat of neonaticide; explicit threats of murder; mention of past sexual violence; mention of past sexual assault; implied past domestic abuse; misogynistic language; language
Word Count: 18k+

When you came to, you glanced around the cabin you were currently tied up in. Tears blurred your vision, strands of your hair matted to your face, and you could feel the gag cutting tightly into the sides of your mouth. You didnât bother trying to yell or make noise. You knew the cabin you were in since Tom had brought you here once to see it; there was no one and nothing around for miles. The next town over where Tom could get supplies was the closest thing and that was about an hourâs drive.Â
How had things gone so wrong? You tried to be a good person, you always tried to do the right thingâŠso how did you end up here?
You already knew the answer to that, though. Because you let him in. Literally, right through your front door.
As if your thoughts summoned him, Tom appeared from the kitchen with two plates in hand and a huge grin, despite a black eye and cut lip he was sporting. He laid yours down in front of you and you could see chicken parmesan, your favorite, surrounded by linguini and green beans. He then placed down his own plate in front of his empty chair before turning back to you with a look of determination. âAlright. Letâs get this off you. No screaming, okay?â He asked, using a softer tone than youâd heard from him all day. âNo struggling. And no running.â As if there was any point in screaming or running; no one would hear you and heâd catch you before you made it ten feet. He loosened your gag and pushed it down past your chin to hang around your neck. When you didnât scream, he graced you with a warm smile. âGood girl,â he murmured as he began working on the ropes tying your hands to the chair. When he moved down to the ones on your legs, you rubbed at your sore wrists, noting a few surface cuts around your arms. He noticed and a frown formed on his face. âSorry, I wonât tie them as tightly next time,â he promised. You didnât know what else to do but nod.
When he was finished, he sat up and his fingers gently gripped your chin, forcing your eyes to meet his. His green gaze bore into yours and he tenderly trailed the backs of his fingers against your cheek, almost watching you in some sort of odd reverence that you had no idea existed until the last couple of months. He began to lean in, presumably to try and kiss you like he had earlier, but he must have thought better of it and stopped, digging his teeth into his bottom lip as he got to his feet. While you were grateful he hadnât connected his lips to yours, you had to wonder what deterred him and that made you worry. He studied you for a moment and, just as you feared, he then made his way over to the other chair being used, his soft expression immediately hardening and his warm eyes icing over as they settled on your estranged husband.
He grabbed the back of the chair and dragged him away from the table, choosing to dump him in a corner on his side, making Miles groan in pain. Tom kicked him for good measure and you heard Miles yell out against the gag in his mouth.Â
âPlease,â burst out of you. âPlease, Tom, donât!â
Tomâs glare snapped up towards you. âAfter everything heâs done to you, donât tell me youâre still protecting him.â
You knew you had to act quickly, to cajole Tom so you could draw his focus away from Miles. You were the only reason Miles wasnât dead yet, you knew that without a doubt. âIâm not,â you soothed. âI just want to eat the dinner you went to the trouble of making for me. Itâs been hours since I last ate and I really need to eat. Iâm sure youâre hungry, too. Please, just come and sit down.â
Thankfully, Tomâs eyes softened a little at your pleading but he still gave Miles one more good kick that made you flinch before he came over to join you. He pulled a knife out of his jacket which made your heart start to pound a little faster but he simply smiled as he also produced a plastic fork. He leaned down and began to cut your chicken into bite size pieces for you. âI, uh, Iâve never made chicken parmesan before so I hope itâs alright,â he told you, a shy smile on his face. You marveled at how he could go from being the scariest thing youâd seen in your life one minute to being the sweetest and most humble guy youâd ever met in the next. âAnd I know green beans arenât what would usually go with this dish but I didnât really have anything else.â He rubbed at the back of his neck, chuckling nervously.
âIâm okay with green beans,â you quietly assured him.
He dropped his hand and smiled, looking relieved and leaning in to tenderly kiss you. You tried your best not to tense up as he did. Tom then made his way over to his seat, leaving you the fork but not the knife. Not only did he not want to chance you using it on him but he most likely didnât want you using it on yourself either. You never would but he obviously wasnât too sure about that. You watched as he poured both of you a glass of sparkling cider and sat down a few battery-operated candles between you.
When he handed you your glass, you were disappointed to find it was plastic. He really had thought of everything. He misread your expression and assured you, âI know itâs not the best but I wanted something nice for you for dinner. Iâll get something better though, next time Iâm in town. I promise.â You offered up a thin-lipped smile and a nod which seemed to placate him for the time being. So he planned to keep you for a while then. You only hoped Miles would keep his mouth shut and that you could get Tom to start trusting you as you waited for an opportunity that might come your way with the aforementioned trip to town.
Tom took the seat across from you, smiling, and reached over to touch his glass to yours. You watched as he took a sip and after a moment, you joined him, making him grin happily.
As hungry as you were, you werenât in a rush to eat anything that he had prepared for you out of sight. What if he was intent on drugging you? You werenât even sure if he hadnât before. You barely remembered how you got here. All you knew was Miles showed up, having found you, and Tom reacted, then nothing until you woke up here. The only other thing you remembered was blonde hair and so much bloodâ You tried to shut that thought out. Thinking about Tom again, If he planned to keep you here for a while, heâd have to sleep at some point and he could be planning to drug you then, like right now. And God only knew what he planned to do with Miles; you prayed you could somehow convince him to let the man go while you stayed behind (even though that would be just as dangerous for you). Though Tom hadnât been wrong; Miles didnât deserve your compassion. But that didnât mean you wanted to watch the man youâd once shared a life with die brutally either. If Tomâs distaste for your husband was anything to go by, if he decided to end Miles, it would indeed be brutal.  Â
âSomething wrong?âÂ
The question snapped you out of your reverie. You glanced up to find Tom watching you worriedly. You forced a reassuring smile onto your face. âNo. Of course not.â
âI thought you needed to eat.â His eyes bored into you, flicking back and forth from the plate to you.
âI will. Iâm justâŠtaking it slow.â
He frowned at your food. âItâs not that good, is it?â
âWhat? No. No,â you worked to reassure him. âItâs just thatâŠâ You didnât want to voice the words and chance angering him.
âJust what?â When you couldnât think of a way to phrase it and kept quiet instead, he urged you in a softer tone, âEat, sweetheart.â
You realized then that you had no choice but to take a few bites if you didnât want to do anything to anger or upset him. You hoped to God that there was nothing in it.
Almost as if he read your mind, his jaw tightened as he went to spear more chicken with his fork on his plate. âThereâs nothing in it if thatâs what youâre worried about. I wouldnât do that to you.â His eyes lifted to yours, that soft reverence back in them. âTo either of you.â He flicked them to your round stomach in meaning and then back to you again.
You wanted to believe him, especially when he looked at you like that, but wouldnât it be easier for him to be rid of the child that wasnât his? Then again, he hadnât killed Miles yet and he fancied himself in love with you, and you were currently housing said child⊠Perhaps he truly didnât mean your baby harm, while it was in utero at least.
Tom let out a heavy sigh and dropped the fork, making it clatter against his plate. He was now scowling over at you, clearly displeased at your show of distrust in him. Uh oh.
Now definitely without a choice, you took a forkful of chicken and slowly bit into it. He seemed pleased with the action and after a moment, continued to eat himself. As you quietly chewed, you realized that it wasnât half bad, and you were starving. As scared as you were, you knew you would need to keep up your energy for any opportunity to escape, to get you and your baby to safety, and truthfully, you needed to take any chance at a meal that you could. Tom smiled to himself as you really dug in.Â
You had halfway cleaned your plate when you heard âSo itâs okay?â
You stopped to see Tom sitting there, leaning forward and watching your every movement, the biggest grin on his face. You swallowed down the chicken you had just stuffed into your mouth and held a hand over your lips self-consciously. âGood,â you admitted quietly. âVeryâŠgood.â
Satisfied with that answer and himself, he sat back in his chair and continued to smile over at you. Though it was unnerving, you continued to finish your meal, your goal being to keep your strength up for your baby. When you were done, he got to his feet and grabbed his plate, slowly making his way over to you. Your heart pounded with each heavy footstep and it nearly stopped when he reached you.Â
Tom grabbed your empty plate and slid his still half-full one in front of you, placing your fork onto it. When you turned a puzzled expression up towards him, he leaned down and pecked your lips, murmuring to you, âYou two need it more than I do.â He kissed you one more time before he walked away, heading into the kitchen. You watched him go in shock, thoughts racing in your mind. Knowing he had eaten some of the food and remembering his promise, after mulling it over for a minute or two, you then dug in, your focus on the chicken and green beans. You needed as much energy as you could get.
He spooned you that night after insisting you take the only bed in the place â his bed. You felt him press a tender kiss to the back of your neck every few minutes and while that made you uncomfortable, his hands gently rubbing your belly had you absolutely terrified. You imagined all sorts of horrible things as you laid there in the dark, with only a shaft of moonlight sneaking into the room through an opening in the curtains. You kept expecting a knife to be pulled, a fist to collide with your bump, to feel the stab of a hypodermic needle â something. It got so bad that you started to shake and Tom, thinking you were cold, moved the blanket over you both a little higher before resuming his ministrations. You wanted nothing more than to throw his hands off of you and get out of the bed, moving away from him. It was one thing for him to have his hands on you, though now it made your skin crawl in the worst way, but your babyâŠyou would give anything to keep him away from the one person youâd do anything to protect.
You were frozen in fear despite the tremors of your body. You felt the baby move and while that should have overjoyed you like it usually did, it caused tears to start rolling down your cheeks, soaking the pillow beneath you. How much longer would you get to feel that? How much longer would Tom allow you to keep your baby?
âOh,â he exhaled against your neck. âSheâs kicking.â
You closed your eyes, forcing more tears to fall, as your lips trembled. You thought back to the first time heâd come into contact with your baby this way. You had been such a fool â such a blind, trusting, naive fool.Â
You were cleaning a wooden frame of a painting with a rag when you felt the familiar movement within your tummy. âOh,â you chuckled, holding a hand to the side of your stomach.Â
âAre you okay?âÂ
You glanced up to find Tom up on a ladder, watching you with furrowed brows. You gave him a bright smile. âYeah, of course. The babyâs kicking. Come down here, quick.â
Still looking worried, Tom hurried down the ladder and approached you.Â
âGive me your hand.â You grabbed the hand he offered up and placed it right where you had just felt movement. Tom glanced back and forth between you and your stomach, looking unsure for what he should be feeling.
A moment later, the baby kicked again. âThere! You feel it?â
You knew he must have because an expression of surprise and awe came over his handsome face as he stared down where you held his hand.Â
Another kick happened and it made you laugh. âOh, sheâs very active today.â
Tom smiled over at you. âYouâre having a girl?â
âWell, I donât really know what Iâm having yet but,â You grinned, feeling yet another kick. âI hope it is.â
âThen I hope it is, too.â You glanced up to find him watching you with that soft look youâd seen before. You gently squeezed his hand in thanks and then focused again on your bump.Â
Tom had been helping you restore the old house youâd moved into. You felt comfortable around Tom, he put you immediately at ease when you met. Heâd been a huge help to you and when you had moments like that, you just chalked it up to him maybe having a little crush on you. At least thatâs what Cindy, a new friend of yours (and the realtor whoâd helped you find the place), said the first time sheâd seen you two together when she stopped by to see how you were doing and how the house was coming along. But you never thought anything more of it. Tom never made a move or asked you out. He also never encroached on your personal space without invitation or pushed past your boundaries. He never did anything to make you uncomfortable. As you got to know him, you began to trust him.
But now, you wondered how you could have ever been so stupid. Â
âYou feel that, Y/N?â He breathed, grabbing your hand and holding it to your stomach. âShe kicked again.â His tone was so full of wonder and happy surprise that you immediately started to cry. His hand traveled from your stomach up to your hair, smoothing it away from your face. âWhatâs wrong? Are you in pain?â You could hear the sudden concern.Â
âAre you going to kill my baby?â You choked out on a sob.
You felt him turn you onto your back so he could look down at you. He looked less than pleased but he murmured, âNo. I told you, I would never hurt either of you. I love you.â He inclined his head towards your stomach. âAnd her. Everything Iâm doing is for you both. I wish you would believe me, Y/N.â
âI really want to,â you cried.
He wiped at your tears and stroked your cheek, before leaning down to kiss you. This time, you opened up for him when he sought entrance beyond your lips and you knew he was pleased by the little groan he let escape into your mouth. You didnât protest when his hands roamed all over your body, thankfully steering clear of your stomach. You didnât say a word when he stripped you of your clothes, whispering âBeautifulâ as he uncovered every inch of your skin. You didnât fight when he urged you to open up for him and his tender touch brought you to heights you had never reached before with a partner other than him that left you gasping for air. As you shivered and shook, unable to keep from crying out, and dug your fingernails into his arm, he smiled lovingly down at you. While you came back down, he pressed kisses to your hair, face, and lips. He watched you, almost if he was waiting for something, so you hesitantly reached out for the button on his jeans, thinking you now needed to return the favor, when he stopped you.
âThis was about you,â he murmured before kissing you. âItâs been a long day. You should get some rest.â
You nodded, not wanting to disagree in the slightest. He pulled the blankets up over your naked form and urged you onto your side again, away from him. He spooned you once more and placed a kiss to the back of your neck. âSleep, sweetheart,â he murmured. âIâll keep you safe.â His hand then cupped over your belly protectively. âBoth of you.â Â
You bit your lip to keep the tears from starting up again. God, you hoped that was true.
The next morning, you woke up alone, feeling groggier than usual. You panicked for a moment, thinking Tom may have drugged you after all, but you remembered you hadnât eaten or drunk anything before you went to sleep. You also didnât find any obvious injection sites when you searched your body in the bathroom, using both mirrors to your advantage. You chalked it up to everything that happened yesterday. It had been taxing on you, mentally and physically. You were just exhausted and needed more sleep. You might even need a nap today, if only you could relax enough to take one. Though you didnât see that happening anytime soon. You dressed and made your way out to the main room, worried about where Tom was, though you felt a little relief seeing Miles in the room, still breathing.Â
You found Tom in the kitchen, making you breakfast, and he gave you a big smile when he saw you. âMorning, Beautiful.â He leaned down and pecked your lips, giving a gentle stroke to your belly with his free hand. âMy two beautiful girls.â You forced a smile and hugged him from behind, laying your head against his back, just like you used to do. You hoped that the gesture of affection would keep him just like this, a semblance of the Tom youâd known before Miles ever showed up. It mustâve worked because he squeezed your arms with his free hand and continued cooking.
Thankfully, this time when you sat down at the table, he didnât tie you to the chair. Instead, he smiled at you as he placed the plate of eggs in front of you and pressed a kiss to the side of your head. âEat, sweetheart,â he urged. âAnd then I want to show you something.â
You nodded, immediately digging in and not wanting to displease him.Â
His smile grew as he watched you and he leaned down once more to kiss your temple. âThatâs my girl,â he murmured. His hand slipped down to your belly and gave it a rub. âMy girls,â he corrected, before walking back into the kitchen.Â
Miles, who was still gagged and tied to his chair, glared over at you from the corner of the room. At some point before you came out of the bedroom earlier, Tom had righted his chair so now he could watch every single thing you and Tom did. You werenât exactly sure what Tom was planning but you didnât like it. You especially didnât like that the man who had terrorized you for years was currently staring at you with pure hatred, as if heâd like to kill you, as if all of this was somehow your fault. In a way, you supposed it was because had you not let Tom into your life in the first place, this wouldnât be happening. But then again, had Miles left you alone and not coming looking for you, Tom wouldnât have snapped. At least, you donât think he would have. And Cindy would still be alive.
âFucking crazy bitch.â Your eyes snapped to Miles who was still scowling at you. Whatever he said was usually muffled by his gag but you could hear it clear as day. You frowned and went back to your food.Â
Tom reappeared just then and placed a bowl of cut up fruit in front of you.Â
âThank you,â you whispered.Â
He gave you a nod, seeming pleased, until he noticed Miles glaring over at you. You watched the change happen within his expression and suddenly you knew you needed to intervene and quickly. Before he could move, you reached out and grabbed his hand, prompting him to look down at you.Â
âI need to get exercise. For the baby. Will you take me for a walk after Iâm done?â
His eyes briefly softened while the rest of him did not. âOf course.â He dropped your hand and moved around the table, coming to a stop in front of Miles. âYou keep looking at her like that and Iâll cut your eyes out and feed them to you,â he threatened with a menacing edge to his tone. âDonât forget, the only reason youâre even still breathing is because of her.â Tom straightened up, a terrifying smirk on his face, before he punched MIles. You winced, dropping your fork to your plate.
Miles turned back to glare up at Tom, more blood seeping into his gag. âFuck you, you piece of shit! Fuck you and that fucking crazy whore!â He yelled against the gag. Tom gave him one more punch for good measure, causing Miles to yell out in pain, before he walked away, that smirk still on his face. You watched as Tom sat down across from you and tucked into his own breakfast, seemingly unbothered by what just occurred. You quickly glanced over at Miles, seeing him still glaring but blood coming out of his broken nose. Â
âHe doesnât deserve your sympathy.â
You quickly looked back at Tom to find him watching you, not glaring so much but also not seeming pleased.
You gripped your fork tightly but forced yourself to keep a smooth expression. âItâs not sympathy, but pity. Pity that he doesnât know when to shut his mouth.â You turned a glare over on your husband who more than gladly returned it.
When you turned back to Tom, he was studying you, smirking. âFinish your breakfast, sweetheart, so I can show you my surprise and then we can go for that walk.â
You did as he instructed, digging into the fruit, not wanting to displease him any further. Thankfully, though, he seemed to be mollified, for now.
You stared around you in horror, your knees feeling weak. You held onto the wall for support.
Tom had taken your hand and led you to a small room in the back of the cabin that you had no idea existed, near the bedroom you had spent the night in. He smiled at you and told you to shut your eyes when you arrived at the closed door. You did as he instructed, not wanting to make him angry. He opened the door, led you into the room with his hands over your eyes, and then asked if you were ready. You nodded and he dropped his hands as you opened your eyes and looked around you, your jaw dropping.Â
âSurprise,â he crowed. âWhat do you think?â
You were thinking you were going to be sick. You were staring at an exact replica of the nursery you and Tom had put together back in your house, right down to the crib sheet, mobile, paint colors, and night light. Everything you had purchased for your nursery, he had obviously gone and bought a double of to place here. You even spotted the same rocking chair in the corner, the same changing table, and the same toys and books youâd decorated the room with. The same stuffed animals sat in the crib. Even a double of the breast pump machine youâd bought was sitting on the changing table.Â
âWhat do you think?â Tom asked happily as he glanced around. âIs it just like the one we put together back at your place?â
You robotically walked to the changing table, opening the cabinets underneath, and you saw the same outfits youâd bought, folded and arranged in the exact same way. You held a hand to your mouth; you felt the urge to scream but you couldnât let it out. You started to shake. How long had he been planning this? To kidnap you and your baby and bring you both here?
âI know what youâre thinking,â he said from behind you, forcing you to tense up and drop your hand, schooling your features before you turned to look up at him. He was watching you worriedly. âI only did this as a back-up. In case we ever had to come out here. If that bastard out there ever tracked you down and we had to leave quickly, I wanted to make sure you and our daughter had everything you needed.â
Our daughter. It felt like you were falling into an endless void and you would never wake up from this nightmare. âWhy didnât you tell me?â You managed to ask.
He framed your face with his hands. âI didnât want to worry you. And I figured it would be a nice surprise if we ever did have to come here. A little piece of home.â He gave you a soft smile. âDo you like it?â
You nodded, not sure what else to do, not able to say anything right then. He grinned and kissed you, happy that you liked the surprise. You thought youâd been in trouble before when he tied you up and brought you out here where no one could hear you scream. Now, you realized, you were in so much more trouble than youâd even imagined.
Tom held your hand as you both walked the property. Thoughts were racing through your mind but you did your best to pay attention to every inch of the land that he took you to.Â
âYouâve been quiet.â If you closed your eyes, you could swear you could hear the Tom that had become your friend and confidante over the months youâd worked on your house together.Â
âJustâŠoverwhelmed. And tired.â
Tom stopped in his tracks and your heart rate picked up, worried you had somehow said something wrong.
He turned to you, staring into your eyes, a layer of concern shadowing his expression. âI know this has been a lot and itâs an adjustment. But I promise you, Y/N, all I want is for our family to be together. Without having to worry about sick fucks like the one in there,â He inclined his head back towards the cabin. âWho want to threaten that, who want to hurt you.â
Tears began to well up in your eyes. âAnd Cindy?â
His jaw tightened and he looked away. âShe wasnât your friend.â
âShe was,â you choked out. âAnd she was a good one.â
His gaze snapped back to yours and he lifted his free hand to your cheek, stroking it with his thumb. âNo, she wasnât, sweetheart. How do you think he found you?â
You shook your head, shaking a few tears loose. No, you refused to believe it. He was just trying to trick you into believing it so you would see things his way. âNo. She wouldnât do that. No.âÂ
Tom wiped your tears away and you could see pity staring back at you. For a cold-blooded killer, it threw you for a loop that he could feel anything like pity or worry for you or concern for the baby or any other emotion besides anger, jealousy, and hatred. âWhen he showed up in her office, he asked where you were and she told him, point blank. No hesitation, just âhereâs the addressâ. He even admitted it.â
âNo, he lies. He probably showed up in uniform and thatâs why sheââ
âShe knew better. You told her that was a possibility, you told her his name so she could be on the lookout. And still, she didnât think twice about it and sent him over to find you.â
âNo, she wouldâve called me to warn me if that happened, if she had no choice. Maybe thatâs why she was thereâŠto warn me.â
He gave you a look. âShe wasnât your friend, Y/N. She gossiped about you behind your back. She came onto me at the Christmas party, though I had gone there with you.â
That revelation surprised you but honestly, you didnât know what was up or down anymore, never mind the truth. âWe went as friends. We werenât together then.â
âShe knew I liked you, that I wanted to be with you.â He leaned in and brushed his lips against the corner of your mouth.
You waited until he straightened back up. âThatâs still no reason to kill her,â you gritted out, a tear rolling down your cheek.Â
He looked at you sadly, wiping the tear away. âI know.â
Your brows drew together in confusion. You hadnât expected that response.Â
Tom pressed a kiss to your forehead and tightened his grip on your hand. âItâs pretty cold out. Letâs get you back inside where you can get warm.â
You let him lead you back to the cabin, turning that last part of the conversation over and over in your mind. From the sound of it, he knew his killing of Cindy had been wrong. A spark of hope started up in your chest though you were afraid to trust it. He still had you and Miles captive here, after all.
That night, as he spooned you from behind in his bed, he was kissing your neck, his hands moving all over your body. You could feel his erection digging into your back. âI love you so much,â he murmured to your skin. âItâs just you and me, sweetheart. You and me. And our little girl.â He placed his hand on your belly, trailing his lips up to your jaw. You closed your eyes, tears rolling down your cheeks, and you tried to imagine the Tom who had first made love to you nearly a month ago, who had sweetly kissed your baby bump every time he left the house and every time he came home. You held onto that Tom in your mind as he undressed you, then himself, probed you to make sure you were ready, and slid into you from behind, sighing happily into your neck as he did. He gently pumped his hips into yours and you could feel his hand making its way down between your legs, touching you in a similar way to how he had touched you last night, with complete tenderness. âWe were meant to find each other,â he grunted into your ear as you arched your back and laid your head against his shoulder, reacting to his touch. âBe a family.â You tried to ignore his words and only focus on the pleasure coursing through you. Heâd said these things to you before, back when he was your Tom, and youâd believed him.Â
You could hear the old bed creaking beneath you and you could feel his rhythm increasing, the moans and sweet whispers in your ear picking up in frequency. You knew he was close and you squeezed your eyes shut harder, trying to imagine you and him back in your bed at your house, as if nothing had changed between you. That image helped bring you closer to the edge and you reached an arm back, gripping his hair, crying out as you got even closer and closer. His pace increased and the headboard was knocking against the wall now, his groans sounding out in rapid succession, almost tangling with your cries in midair, joining together in an almost impassioned chorus. Lost in your fantasy and the sensations you were feeling, you moaned out, âKiss me.â Tomâs mouth was on yours, his tongue sweeping against your own, and that pushed you over the edge. You stiffened and he swallowed your cries, grunting loudly himself and intertwining his fingers with yours, squeezing as he fell over his own edge. You were still shaking a couple of minutes later when he slipped out of you and gently rolled you onto your back as you caught your breath.Â
You could see him beaming down at you, still panting himself, his hair messy from your fingers, eyes bright and full of adoration for you. The same way heâd looked the other times youâd had sex in the past. It made your heart soar but also break mid-flight. âI love you.â You saw how much he meant it and your heart completely shattered.
Your eyes filled with tears as you reached a hand up to stroke his cheek. âI love you, too,â you whispered. And you did, this version of Tom, anyway. His smile grew and he laid his head down on your chest, sighing in contentment as you ran your fingers soothingly through his hair. Tears dripped down your cheeks as you held him, wondering how the universe could be so cruel as to send someone to you that loved you and your baby so much only to have him turn out to be a cold-blooded killer.Â
You woke up alone again, even groggier than the day before. At this point, you wouldnât be surprised if Tom was actually drugging you in some way once you fell asleep. You had held him until he fell asleep himself last night but obviously, at some point, he must have woken up after you passed out.
You felt irritable, which was most likely a side effect of the grogginess you felt and possibly whatever Tom was drugging you with, as well as typical pregnancy hormones. It was so bad that you couldnât even be bothered to drum up a smile for Tom who was looking at you like you were the best thing that existed on the planet. You took the food he gave you and dug in, not even thanking him like you usually made sure to do.
You felt off and when he spoke softly to you, âEat, sweetheart, and then weâll go for another walkâ, you nearly snapped at him, demanding to know what heâd been drugging you with and why. Youâd only just held yourself back, reminding yourself you werenât supposed to say or do anything that would anger him.
Miles, though, was fair game.Â
He had called you names, though muffled by the gag, the minute Tom stepped out of the room. You ignored him as best you could, though it still got under your skin. Who the hell was he to sit there and call you things like âwhoreâ and âslutâ? Even if he had heard you and Tom together last night? Was he so stupid that he didnât realize the predicament he was in, that you all were in? Had Tomâs threats and beatings not made it clear enough? When Tom got up to get you more decaffeinated tea, Miles threw more insults your way and you decided, yes, he really was that stupid. Nothing you hadnât already known, you supposed.
Tom placed the tea in front of you and you gave him a nod. His brows drew together for a moment before he smoothed them out, taking his seat once more. He glanced between you and Miles. âEverything okay?â
âTerrific,â you snapped. It didnât hit you until you said it what you had done. You quickly glanced up at Tom who didnât look displeased at your attitude (thankfully) but was studying you intently. âSorry,â you offered more gently. âIâm not having a good morning.â
He nodded, his brows still drawn together. âWell, finish up and weâll get out of here for a while, stretch our legs, and get some fresh air.â He gave you a patient and understanding smile.
You gave him a wan smile in return, realizing how lucky you were that he was being so understanding and hadnât gotten angry with you. You were picking up the plastic butter knife to spread jam on your toast when Miles said something nasty to you both, once again muffled by his gag.Â
At that point, youâd had enough. You dropped the knife and pounded the table with your fist, making the plates shake. âShut. Up!â You yelled over at him. He scowled at you but did indeed shut up. You realized what youâd done and you worriedly glanced back at Tom. His eyes were flicking back and forth between you and Miles before getting to his feet. Your heart leapt into your throat. Oh no. Now youâd done it.
He made his way over to you, glaring at Miles as he did. When he stopped in front of you, he held out his hand which you warily took. He pulled you to your feet and gripped your chin between his fingers. âI think we should go for that walk now. Okay?â You nodded, not exactly sure what was going to happen but you noticed him shooting a terrifying glare in Milesâ direction. You remembered you needed to keep your strength up so you picked up the piece of toast you had been intent on eating and took it with you as he led you to the door. He saw and chuckled, squeezing your hand, as he opened the screen door for you both to walk through.    Â
âYou feeling a little better?â
You turned to look at him, wondering how to answer that. Yes, you werenât as edgy, but no, you didnât exactly feel better. You finally settled on âA little.â
He gave you a hint of a smile and nodded, averting his gaze to the path in front of you.Â
After a minute, he spoke. âYou know, if heâs becoming a problem, I can take care of it.â
You froze, stopping in your tracks, your eyes wide. This was exactly what you didnât want.
He noticed you had stopped and glanced back at you over his shoulder with furrowed brows.Â
You didnât want to anger him but maybe you were too tired, too scared, or too irritated â you couldnât help but finally speak your mind. âI donât want you to kill him.â
Instead of angry, he appeared confused as he spun around to fully face you. âWhy? Heâs obviously upsetting you, which isnât good for the baby or you, heâs stinking up the place, he refuses to eat anything. Hell, he doesnât even deserve to live after what heâs done to you. No oneâs even going to miss the guy. Not to mention, it would keep you and our daughter safe... Whatâs the point of keeping him around?â
Tears started to blur your vision as you finally admitted the truth. âI canât⊠I canât kill someone, even him.â
Tom stared into your eyes before licking his lips and looking away. âThatâs why Iâm offering to do it.â
It terrified you to say this next part but you had to say it. âIf this is going to work with us, as a familyâŠyou canât kill anymore people, Tom.â His eyes snapped to yours and your heart began to pound harder in fear. âYou canât kill and I canât order someoneâs death. Even his.â Tears made their way down your face and his gaze softened a little, seeing them.Â
He reached up and wiped them away with his thumbs before pulling you into him, pressing a lingering kiss to the top of your head. âOkay,â he murmured to you. âOkay. Weâll figure something else out for him.â He embraced you tightly and you closed your eyes, relieved. âAnd then itâll just be us, the three of us, our family.â
You nodded against him, though you secretly knew you still had to figure out a way to escape. Perhaps once you were able to figure out what to do with Miles, then that would leave just the two of you. And then either Tom would be forced to take you into town for supplies which gave you more of an opportunity to escape or get help, or heâd be forced to leave you here. Based on the two walks you had so far, you were starting to get to know the property. Even though there was nothing but woods surrounding you, perhaps you could make your way at least to the property line. From there, you could figure out your next move.
He released you, kissed you, and took your hand again to start heading back.Â
âAnd Tom?âÂ
He glanced over at you.Â
You didnât want to push your luck but since you had already spoken up about Miles and the killing, you were going to speak up about this, too. Especially since your child was at stake. âWhatever youâre drugging me with at night, you have to stop. It could be hurting the baby.â
He furrowed his brows again. âSweetheart, Iâm not drugging you. I told you, I would never do anything to hurt her. Or you. I would never put either of you at risk like that.â
You wanted to believe him but you also knew what you felt. âThen why do I feel so groggy when I wake up in the morning? And itâs gotten worse each time?â
He studied you, looking as if he wanted to say something, when a sudden realization dawned on his face. A smile crept along his face. âYouâre probably tired because Iâve been keeping you up at night. You probably just need a good nightâs rest, thatâs all. Iâll tell you what, tonight you take a nice, hot shower, weâll go to bed a little earlier, and weâll just sleep. How does that sound?â
You didnât want to appear too eager for him not to engage in any sexual activities with you so you just nodded and hugged his arm, whispering, âThat sounds good, thank you.â
He wrapped his arm around you and pulled you into him, leading you both back to the cabin. His smile turned sheepish. âSorry, sweetheart. I just couldnât resist you, but donât worry, I promise to keep my hands to myself. Your rest is more important, especially for her.â He laid a hand over your bump, patting it gently, and you tried not to cringe under his arm.
Two weeks had passed and truth be told, you were surprised no one had come looking for you yet, considering you, Tom, and Miles were missing, you were pregnant, and Cindyâs dead body had been left in your house. Your due date was little more than a month away, and you were starting to worry you might have to deliver at the cabin if you werenât found soon.Â
Miles was still with you both, alive, as cantankerous as ever. He eventually started to eat the small amounts of food Tom let him have when he realized Tom wasnât going to kill him and he obviously wasnât going anywhere anytime soon. He still threw insults at you every chance he got but for the most part, you ignored him to the best of your ability. If Tom overheard, which was rare, he beat the crap out of Miles until either you begged him to stop or Miles lost consciousness. You and Tom were still trying to figure out what to do with him, but short of taking him somewhere deep in the woods and dropping him off there with the hopes that a bear might get him, you didnât really have any options. And since you asked Tom not to kill him, a hostage Miles remained.
Tom had kept his word and kept his hands to himself at night. He still spooned you, still kissed you and caressed your bump, but he let you sleep. You still woke up groggy sometimes, as if you hadnât slept a wink, but it had gotten a little better. Tom blamed those mornings on the old mattress. He swore heâd buy a new one the next time he was in town (which thankfully was coming up soon). You had taken to showering before bed every night, hoping the hot water would relax your body enough that you would drift off into a deep, restful sleep. You had actually gotten used to Tom cuddling you and you no longer feared for your childâs life when he touched your belly. He talked to the baby sometimes, something you heard while you were falling asleep, and his tone was so gentle and loving and reverent, that you couldnât help but think he really meant it when he said he wanted all of you to be a family. He had even taken to kissing the bump again throughout different parts of the day or if he had to go outside to chop wood. He cooked for you every day without complaint, though youâd offered to pitch in to help (hoping he would trust you completely and you could get access to knives and other cooking tools that could be weaponized at some point if needed). Heâd given you a knowing smile and thanked you but told you that he was fine with the arrangement, he didnât mind. You mentally cursed yourself at being so transparent but you were also thankful he hadnât gotten angry.Â
For the most part, though, youâd settled into a sort of routine with Tom every day: breakfast, walk, you were free to move around the cabin as he chopped wood for an hour, heâd take you into the nursery to sit in the rocking chair for a bit to either go over possible baby names or to sit and read to the baby or to play music (he had gotten the same pair of fetal headphones you did), lunch, a nap he insisted you take each day to help you rest better while he fixed things up around the cabin, a free couple of hours to do whatever you wanted, dinner, another walk, shower, and then bed.Â
You were following this routine one such day when Miles appeared to have finally lost his mind altogether.Â
It was dinnertime and you had come into the main room with a book in your hand. When setting up the nursery here, Tom had bought the same books you had to prepare for the pregnancy. You were able to pick up where you left off in What To Expect When Youïżœïżœre Expecting. You sat down as Tom came in with a plate of carrots for you to snack on. He smiled when he saw your nose in the book, mindlessly reaching out for a carrot, and dropped a kiss on your head. âWhat chapter are you on?â
âStill on the eighth month,â you answered without looking at him, taking a bite out of the carrot.Â
âMmm,â he hummed against your hair. âMaybe youâll finish it by the time we eat. Iâve got about ten more minutes left and then weâre good to go.âÂ
âThatâs fine. Iâve got carrots to munch on and plenty to read in the meantime.â You held the book up in gesture.Â
He chuckled and dropped another kiss to your head before walking away. You immediately got back to reading.Â
Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Tom loosen Milesâ gag and then shove two pieces of white bread in his mouth. âHere, dipshit.â He slammed a small plastic cup of water on the arm of his chair, spilling most of it and not really caring. âEnjoy.â
Tom left the room with a glare over his shoulder in Milesâ direction.Â
Miles spit out the bread and turned furious eyes on you. You ignored him, choosing to go back to your chapter.Â
âYou stupid, crazy fucking whore.â
Your jaw tightened but you remained silent, picking up another carrot to snack on.
âYou hear me? Youâre so desperate for dick youâre playing house with that crazy fucker.â
You could feel yourself tense up but you simply turned the page.Â
âYouâre a stupid fucking crazy whore and I always knew you were.â
You rolled your eyes. âCareful, Miles, youâre starting to sound like a broken record.â
That had been a mistake to say. A shark-like grin appeared on Milesâ face â well, as much as it could with his face beat to hell. âYou want to hear something different? Alright, how about this? When I get outta here and I will get outta here, Iâm going to kill that motherfucker right in front of you. Iâm going to bash his skull in while you watch. Then when Iâm done with him, Iâm going to come for you.â You tried not to show it but you could feel an age-old fear creeping up on you. âSince youâre such a whore, Iâm gonna use you like the whore you are, over and over again, until youâre crying and begging me to stop. And just like old times, I wonât.â You could feel the tremors starting up. âIâll even fuck you right next to his corpse so you can cry all over his brains on the ground. And then when Iâm finished with you, good and finished, Iâm going to beat the hell out of you but not before I cut that baby out of you and strangle it with its own cord right in front of you. Then if youâre somehow still alive after all that, Iâm gonna kill you. And Iâm gonna get a medal for it. âHero cop stops modern-day Bonnie and Clyde from continuing their killing spree.â You just wait. The governor will be shaking my hand and I may even get a call from the goddamn President, thanking me for my service. I put down three rabid dogs, all for the price of one, the one I was tracking down in the first place. Iâm gonna be a goddamn hero for this, for ripping you and your evil spawn from this world. Howâs that for a new record, you crazy whore?â
A tear slipped down your cheek and he laughed.Â
âI shouldâve fucking gotten rid of you when I had the chance. Now, Iâll have that chance and Iâm going to enjoy it.â He laughed again.
You wiped your cheek just in time for Tom to walk in with a bow of mashed potatoes. You noticed that for all of Milesâ bravado a moment earlier, he sure got quiet when Tom walked into the room.Â
Tom placed the bowl down on the table. âJust give me five more minutes.â He glanced up and immediately knew something was off. âWhatâs wrong?â
You gave him a thin smile. âNothing,â you assured him. âLooks like Iâm not going to make it to the ninth month chapter after all.â You placed the book down; you had lost your appetite for both knowledge and for food. âIâm actually not feeling well so I think Iâm going to go to bed early.â
He tilted his head, confused. âBut you were feeling fine a few minutes ago. Was it the carrots? Or something elseâŠ?â
You shook your head, ignoring Milesâ chuckling under his breath. âI just need to lay down. Iâm sorry, I know you worked hard on dinner. Can you save me some for tomorrow?â
Tomâs eyes darted to Miles, his jaw tightening. âOf course. Get some rest and feel better, sweetheart. Iâm here if you need anything.â
âThanks.â You turned and left the room, wincing when you heard Miles yelling out in pain presumably from Tom hitting him but you refused to turn back and look.
When you got out of the shower and dressed in the sleeveless maternity nightgown Tom had thought to buy for you, you wiped the condensation off the mirror with a hand and stared into it. You couldnât believe the things Miles had said to you but then again it was Miles, so you could. A part of you wondered if Tom was right; would it be safer for you and your baby if Miles was gone for good? You shook the thought from your head, not even wanting to entertain it. No matter how horrific Miles was, no matter how dangerous, you werenât a killer. Even if he was killed by some other means, you didnât want to be the one responsible. You were better than that, a better person. You wouldnât become like Miles and let him win. Â
You heard a soft knock on the door. âY/N?â
You nervously licked your lips and went to open the door. You hoped Tom wasnât upset with you for missing dinner. But when you opened it, all you saw was concern and worry staring back at you.
He ducked his head, meeting your eyes. âAre you feeling any better?â
You tried to smile but it probably came out as a grimace. âYeah.â
Tom studied you for a moment and then held out his hand which looked remarkably clean considering what he had done to Miles recently. âI want to show you something.â
Thinking it might have to do with Miles, you started to shake your head. âNo, I donâtââ
âItâs for the baby,â he soothed. âI have it right here on the bed.â
You let out a quiet breath of relief and took his hand. He kissed your forehead and led you over to the bed where a box sat on top. He urged you to get closer and take a look at it, releasing you.Â
You gazed down at the box, picking it up and looking it over. âA home fetal heart monitor?â
âYeah.â He sat down on the bed, taking the box from you and opening it. âI know you havenât been able to go for your usual checkup due to ourâŠsituation at the moment.â He pulled everything out and laid it on the bed. âI bought this long before we came here, in case we needed it. You said the baby is pretty active every day so I didnât think it was needed. But, you know what, maybe itâs not a bad idea to check in on her. What do you say?â
You were honestly floored at the gesture and you wondered if he had gotten Miles to confess what heâd said or if he overheard again. Either way, you were touched. âUmâŠâ You bit your lip, trying to keep from crying. Damn these pregnancy hormones sometimes. âYeah.â
âYeah?â He grinned.
âYeah,â you laughed, a tear slipping out as you reached for the wand.Â
He read the instructions and you both figured out how to use it. He urged you to sit back against him as he lifted the hem of your nightgown over your belly. He applied the gel and you used the wand, moving it around until your babyâs heartbeat started to sound from the speaker. You couldnât help but smile.
âThere she is,â Tom whispered into your ear in awe. âThereâs our little girl.â
You felt your eyes welling up again, joy and relief flooding through you as you listened to your babyâs steady heartbeat. You turned your head to look at Tom, seeing the same emotions reflecting back at you. âThank you,â you whispered, leaning in to kiss him. Somehow he knew just what you needed. The louder and steadier your babyâs heartbeat was, the more it drowned out Milesâ words.Â
You felt completely at peace and able to drift off to sleep soon after, with Tom wrapped around you. Your baby was okay and she was going to be safe.
Perhaps Miles was right. Maybe you were kind of playing house with a âcrazy fuckerâ as he claimed. But youâd take that crazy fucker over Miles anyday. That crazy fucker cared more about your child than he, the biological father, did. Tom cared about her, wanted her, and would do whatever it took to keep you both safe while Miles had threatened to hurt her, hurt you both. So yeah, youâd take the âcrazy fuckerâ any day of the week.
A scream startled you awake. You sat up as best as you could, glancing around the dimly lit bedroom. You could see the first shafts of morning light peeking through the windows. You were alone in the bed. âTom?â You called, scared when you didnât see him. You didnât know what youâd heard but you were frozen in terror.
Another pained scream erupted out of nowhere and it sounded like it was coming from outside. Milesâ words came back to you and you hurriedly got to your feet, realized you were nude (Tom must have taken your nightgown off to be skin on skin again; he liked that), and dressed. Your hair was still damp from your shower last night but you had no time to throw it up in a bun or ponytail. You felt sore and you noticed a few cuts on your fingers. The sight terrified you especially given how sore your body was and how you had woken up nude but Tom was nowhere to be found. Especially when you remembered Milesâ threats. âTom?â You cried but you still got no answer.Â
You made your way to the main room and gasped when you saw blood in the corner where Miles had been, partially covered by a sheet. You noticed there was blood spatter all over the walls, in almost every nook and cranny. Some of it had even landed on the table, the opposing wall, and the area of floor you were about to step on. âNo. No!â You werenât sure if you were more scared of Tom at this moment, or for him. You belatedly realized he must have overheard Miles threatening you and the baby last night and that was definitely why he brought out the fetal monitor to assure you. Youâd had such a sweet moment with it; how did you go from that to this within a matter of hours?
You ran out the door, the screen door slamming back against the house. You didnât see anything or anyone in the distance. You heard the screaming again and it seemed like it was coming from the surrounding woods to your right.Â
âTom!â You screamed.Â
You ran back inside, looking for anything you could use as a weapon, maneuvering as best you could with your stomach but not finding anything, and hurried back out to the porch. You had to stop Tom. Miles had been horrific to you and didnât deserve your intervention but you couldnât let this happen to him. He was a human being, a horrible disgusting human being, but a human being nonetheless. You were about to hurry down the stairs when a bloody Tom appeared in front of you, a pickaxe in his hand.Â
You froze, unsure if you should run back inside or if that would even make a difference. You held a hand over your mouth and your eyes filled with tears when you noticed something hanging from one side of the pickaxeâs blade that looked suspiciously organ-like.
He came to a stop in front of you, near the bottom of the stairs, and you felt like you couldnât breathe. âIs it the baby?â He asked worriedly, panting.Â
You shook your head, biting your lip to keep from yelling in terror. You couldnât keep the tears from spilling down your face, though.Â
He saw and his brows drew together until realization dawned upon his face. He dropped the pickaxe to the ground and spoke gently. âIâm okay, sweetheart. This isnât my blood.â
Tom actually thought you were worried about him, that somehow Miles had gotten a hold of him like heâd threatened and was doing horrific, unspeakable things to him. A voice deep down told you to play along. âWill you please come inside then and let me clean you up?â You fought hard to keep the wobble out of your voice.
His eyes softened and he climbed the stairs to stand before you. The sight of so much blood made you want to vomit. You werenât squeamish by any means but the amount of blood covering Tom from head to toe⊠If Miles wasnât dead already, he soon would be.Â
Tom went to reach out a hand to your cheek but then saw the blood and thought better of it, dropping it to his side.Â
âY-You promised,â you forced out.
âI did.â
âWhy then? W-Why did you break it? We wereâŠwe were doing so well,â you sobbed out.
His jaw tightened but his eyes saddened. âWe still are. Let me go finishâŠthat. Iâll come back, clean up, and then weâll talk.â He said it as if he was simply going to finish chopping firewood and then come back for lunch.Â
âTom,â you gasped, trying to breathe through the sobs tearing out of you. âIf you continue ro torture him, I canât be with you.â
His brows furrowed again and you waited for the terrifying expression youâd seen all too often to make a reappearance. Instead, he looked more confused than ever. âIâm not torturing him, Y/N.â
âYes, you are. I heard him screaming.â
His lips parted in shock and he went to reach out for you again. This time, you flinched and moved backwards on reflex. He dropped his hand and curled it into a fist. You were scared that you angered him but God, how could you live with yourself if you let him go continue killing Miles slowly and brutally?Â
âSweetheart,â he spoke gently. âNo one was screaming. Except you.â
âI know what I heard, Tom!â Was he seriously trying to gaslight you right now into believing you had been hearing things? The bloody pickaxe was still on the ground, with whatever attached it, for crying out loud. âIt woke me up!â
His eyes softened then. âMiles was dead before I dragged him out here. You sawâŠinsideâŠno one could have survived that.â
You felt like your heart stopped. The way he talked about murdering another human being so casually made your blood run cold.Â
He took another step closer and you took another step backwards. He held out a placating hand but all you could see was the blood caked on his skin. âY/N, look at me.â You lifted your gaze to his and only then did you notice how badly you were shaking. âI need you to take some deep breaths and relax.â
âRelax?â You laughed. âAre you kidding me?â
âYou need to stay calm for the baby.â
You huffed out a snort in disbelief but after a moment, you realized he was right. The last thing you needed right now was for labor to start early or for there to be any complications when you were this remote. You forced yourself to take deep breaths.Â
âGood.â He gave you a tiny smile. âNow, I need you to listen to me.â
You focused on your breathing, not wanting to listen to him but you had no choice.
âI need you to go inside and pack your things. Thereâs a bag under the bed you can put your clothes and the babyâs clothes in. When Iâm done, Iâll come in, clean myself up, and get the rest of what weâll need.â
Your jaw dropped. âYouâre taking me somewhere else? Are you serious?â You felt like your mind was unraveling. âWhat aboutâ What about the nursery?â You could care less about the nursery right now but it was what your mind grasped onto, trying to make sense of everything that was happening.Â
âWeâll take most of it with us. Donât worry. I can recreate it in the new place. Quickly, too, before she comes.â
âAnother remote cabin?â You snapped.
He shook his head. âA home. For us, for our family. Thereâs a swingset in the backyard and everything.â
You narrowed your eyes at him. âJust how long have you been planning this? First this cabin? Now a house? How long, Tom?â You demanded.
He seemed unsure how to answer but he said, âAs long as Iâve had to. Now, please, go inside and pack. If you hear anything, just know Iâm okay and heâs already dead. Alright?â
You kept focusing on your breathing, not answering him.
âI promise Iâll explain everything once weâre on the road.â
The road? Depending on which road he planned to take, there may be other cars on that road, places he needed to pull over for gas â people. You could possibly flag someone down for help or even make an escape attempt that might be successful. The road was good. It meant opportunity.Â
You took another deep breath and nodded, opening the screen door and walking inside, refusing to look back at Tom or the massacre-decorated corner of the main room.Â
You had packed everything Tom had told you to: your clothes, the baby clothes, your book, any necessities. After a while, Tom had come back, spent a few hours attempting to clean the blood from the main room which he urged you to keep the bedroom door shut for with the bedroom window open in case, jumped in the shower, and then urged you out the door. He packed everything else up into his truck. Heâd even disassembled the crib and tied the rocking chair down securely in the truck bed. The changing table was being left behind as well as the cubbies heâd stored the books and toys in but everything else came with. He also managed to quickly pack a cooler of food and drinks, and took whatever he could from the cupboards. It was an odd sensation, standing by the truck as he did all of this, not offering to help. A part of you wanted to but the other part was still angry with him for killing Miles and breaking his promise to you. Another third smaller part was scared to death that you were about to share the same fate, or at least you would once the baby was born. Tom wanted your baby; that was crystal clear to you now as you noticed the larger percentage of what was packed had more to do with the baby than anything else. While he had told you he wanted you all to be a family, perhaps he was just waiting for you to give birth and then that would be it. For you.
You focused on maintaining your breathing and told yourself you would get away long before that could happen.Â
Once everything was packed up and the cabin was closed up, Tom opened the passenger door for you and helped you up into the seat. You wouldnât have accepted his help if you thought you could get up there yourself but a very big belly tended to offset everything. He got into the driver seat, slipped a baseball cap on, and pulled away from what had been your temporary home for a few weeks.Â
It was about fifteen miles on the highway or so, with nary a car in sight, that you finally turned to Tom (who you had been ignoring this entire ride so far) and asked the question that had been sitting in the back of your brain. âYou heard him last night, didnât you?â
Tom turned a confused expression onto you.Â
âWhen he threatened me.â
His eyes hardened and his jaw clenched, turning back to the road ahead. âNo. I didnât. I knew he had probably said something to upset you but I didnât know he did that. Had I, I wouldâveâŠâ He shook his head, angry, clenching a fist. âMakes sense, though.â
âWhat makes sense?â
He nervously licked his lips and reached over to pick up your hand. You went to yank it back but he tightened his grip and placed a kiss to your skin. âI promised I would tell you everything and I will.â
âNow seems like a good a time as any,â you seethed, still trying to pull your hand back but he wouldnât let you.
âLetâs get some driving out of the way first. Weâve got a ways to go and Iâd rather we put as much distance as we can between us and that cabin.â
âYeah, I bet,â you muttered.Â
He seemed displeased with your reaction but he let your hand go and continued focusing on the road. And for the first time since this whole thing started, you couldnât be bothered to give a damn. That worried you a bit because you should be trying to keep him happy, calm, trusting, and instead you were doing the exact opposite. But the anger and betrayal you felt seemed to be overriding everything at the moment.
âHey. Y/N.â
You were being gently shaken awake and you opened your eyes, glancing all around you. You were still in the front seat of the truck and the sun was starting to go down. You turned to see Tom rubbing your shoulder.Â
âYou need to use the bathroom, sweetheart?â He murmured.Â
Almost as if on cue, your bladder started to hurt. You nodded, rubbing your eyes.Â
âOkay.âÂ
He jumped out of the truck and made his way over to your side. He opened your door and lifted you to the ground, grunting in the effort. Had he been someone else, you wouldâve felt bad for the strain he was putting on his body in doing so.Â
You were at a rest stop where other cars surrounded you. You saw families milling about, couples, friends traveling together â people.
He grabbed your hand and gripped it tightly. âStay close to me.â Of course he wanted you to stay close to him. He didnât want you running off for help after all.
You let him lead you into the building as you tried to formulate a plan to escape him. He held you closer as he pushed his way through people waiting in line for the various food vendors available and brought you to the womenâs bathroom. Thankfully, there was no line. You were just waiting to get in there and lock the door behind you. But as luck would have it, he opened the door himself and ducked his head in. When he determined it was clear, he urged you in ahead of him and locked you both inside.
âIâll be right here if you need me.â
You glared at him and went to find a stall, realizing heâd already anticipated your plan. When you found one, you relieved the pangs of your bladder and tried to think of a new plan. You heard him checking the other stalls around you as a precaution.Â
Technically, there were a lot of people around. If you screamed in the middle of the crowd, he couldnât do anything about it. You smiled to yourself. Yeah, you liked that plan.
You finished doing what you needed to do and exited the stall to wash your hands. While you were drying them, arms came around you, a hand tenderly placed against your belly, and you heard Tom whisper in your ear, âI love you. I love both of you. I donât know what Iâd do if I lost either of you.â He pressed a kiss to your cheek. âIâm sorry I didnât know what he said. If I had, maybe I couldâve done something to keep this morning from happening.â
You refused to look at him, in the mirror or next to you. Too little, too late. âYou broke your promise to me, Tom.â
âI didnât break my promise to you, sweetheart.â
âReally?â You spun around, glaring up at him. âAnd what do you call this morning? Look, Miles was a despicable human being who did the most horrific things to me a long time ago and threatened to do even more horrific things if he got loose, but he was still a human being. You know what? Itâs not even about him. I didnât even ask you not to kill him for him, I asked you not to kill him for me. Not because I cared in the slightest what happened to him, but because I canât be with someone who just goes around killing people because they can! I have a baby to think about, Tom! What if she cries too loudly or she doesnât put her toys away when we tell her to? What then?â
With each word you said, he looked more and more pained. âIâm going to be a good father to her, Y/N. Iâm really doing the best I can to keepâŠcertain impulses in control. Itâs not easy. Even when there are certain risky things going on that are tempting those impulses.â
âWhat?â What was he talking about?
âI didnât want to have this conversation until we got to the house but if you need to hear it now so you know how much I love you and the baby, then so be it. Y/N, Iââ
A loud pounding sounded on the door. âThe doorâs locked!â Some woman yelled.Â
âShit,â he muttered before turning to look down at you pleadingly. âLook, I get that you can walk out that door, scream for help, I would have to run, and then youâd never see me again. But Christ, Y/N, Iâm asking you to please give me a chance to explain. Just one. If you donât want to be with me after that or allow me to be her dad,â He swallowed compulsively at that part. âThen you two can stay in the new house and Iâll move on. I promise.â
âHey, some of us have to go to the bathroom, too! Open up!â
You gritted your teeth and glanced up at him skeptically. âAnother promise?â
âI havenât broken the last one I made to you yet.â
You shot him a look.Â
âOpen up or weâre going to report you!â
âReport me to who?â You snapped at the door. âThe bathroom police? Please.â You turned back to Tom who was smirking down at you. âWhat?â
He only smirked wider and offered you his hand. You realized you must definitely be nuts because after a moment, you took it. He leaned down to kiss your nose, whispering, âThank you.â
A second later, he gripped your hand tightly. âNo matter what, we keep our heads down and just get back to the truck. Deal?â   Â
You gave him a hesitant nod and moved closer to his back, so he could break through the crowds for you both. Â
He unlocked the door and opened it, rushing past a couple of women standing sentry at the door. The loud one yelled at you as you passed, âReally? Thatâs what we were waiting on? Disgusting! I should report you both!â
You had the strongest urge to yell something back but Tom squeezed your hand and hurried out of there, ignoring any onlookers.Â
You were just about to step into the parking lot when you heard a feminine giggle to your right. You glanced over and saw a young woman flirting with a young guy. She was touching his jaw with the tip of her finger, and he was smirking down at her. Â
She giggled again and the images in front of you began to swim. Suddenly, another image overtook it.Â
You were back in your house, at the top of the stairs, watching as your friend Cindy was all smiles at Tom. He was coming down off of the ladder from installing the light at the top of the foyer. He gave her a polite smile and when she asked where you were, he said you were upstairs resting, the baby had been really active that morning.
Cindy watched as he wiped his hands on a rag and she sidled up to him. âTom, what are you doing? Playing house with the new weird pregnant girl who wonât tell anyone where sheâs from, and stepping in as Daddy? It doesnât suit you. Youâre young and strong and full of life. Donât let her suck it out of you.â Your grip on the railing tightened.
Tom had politely pushed her away. âI love her, Cindy. I love them both. Theyâre my life. Now, if you canât accept that or even speak nicely about her in her own home, then I think itâs time for you to leave.â He gestured towards the door.
Cindy tried once more. âBut, Tom, we had some fun times together, didnât we? Wouldnât you prefer that to whatever this is?â She gestured around the foyer in disgust.
âYes, we did. And no, I donât. Like I told you at the Christmas party, Iâm not interested. So, please leave.â
âUgh, fine. Call me when you get bored of the fake family routine.â She was walking towards the door finally. You could see Tomâs jaw tighten as he watched her go, his hands clenched in fists at his sides.
You quietly hurried down to the last few steps, plastering a big smile on your face. âCindy, is that you?â
Tomâs gaze snapped over to you and Cindy spun on her heel with the biggest fake smile. âY/N! I was just asking after you. Tom told me you were getting some rest so I figured Iâd drop by later to see how you were doing.â
You made your way down the stairs, Tom holding out a hand to help you. You gave him a smile of thanks and laid a hand on your belly, rubbing. âYeah, she was being a little overactive this morning and tired Mommy out.â You then placed your hands on your belly as if you were blocking the babyâs ears. âUsually happens after a great night of sex,â you said in a more conspiratorial tone.
Tom grinned down at you. âDamn right it does.â He pulled you to him, kissing you.
You chuckled against his lips, playfully pushing away from him, your cheeks warm. âTom, we have company.â You inclined your head in Cindyâs direction who still had the fake smile going.Â
Tom shrugged. âShe was just leaving.â He leaned in to kiss you again when you laughed and turned to let him kiss your cheek instead.Â
âOh my word, you two are just too cute together. Like a Christmas card without all of theâŠChristmas,â Cindy let out in a laugh.
Tom moved and slipped his arms around you from behind, pressing kisses to your cheek as he rubbed at your belly.Â
âSo, Cindy, what did you drop by for?â You asked, playfully slapping at Tomâs hand that was subtly moving above your belly. He snickered into your ear before nibbling on it.
âYou know what, you seem a little busy right now, hun. Iâll drop by later so we can talk.â
You gave her a bright smile. âThatâd be great. Iâll put coffee on for you and tea for me, and weâll chat then.â
âAbsolutely! See you then!â She wiggled her fingers in a goodbye and then was out the door.
Your smile dropped as soon as the door closed. Tom saw and placed his lips at your ear. âI take it you heard all of that before you came down?â
You turned a stone cold expression on him.Â
He sighed and laid his forehead against yours. âI love you and want to be with you. Only you. You know that.â
âBut youâve been with her?â
âIt was only a couple of times, purely casual. It was done before you even came to town.â
You gripped his chin tightly. âAre you sure you want to give up fun times together and play Daddy?â
His brows drew together, studying you. âYes. Sweetheart, if I didnât want to, I wouldnât be here.âÂ
Your expression softened and you released him. âYou mean that?â You whispered.
He gave you a soft smile and kissed you. âWe could be up in the mountains somewhere, just the three of us, and Iâd be happy. So, yes, sweetheart, I mean it. Weâre a family and nothing is going to threaten that. I promise.â
You hugged his arms around you and leaned back against him, relaxing and smiling. You really had no idea what you had done to deserve Tom coming into your life when he did.Â
Which is why you were so desperate to keep him with you, to keep your family together. When Cindy walked into your kitchen a few hours later, you were determined to lay down the law. To let her know that you overheard her earlier and while you appreciated her helping you find this house (and Tom by extension), she was no longer welcome in it. Instead, though, she ended up dead. She made a comment to you about Tom that was heavy with implication and before you knew it, you attacked her. Multiple stab wounds to the body after a smashed coffee pot over her head that caused third-degree burns. She just wouldnât stop screaming.
Tom arrived back from a trip to the store and found you in the kitchen, still stabbing her long after she finally stopped screaming, his eyes wide. He wrestled you for the knife and tossed it before gripping your face and staring into your eyes. âY/N, itâs me! Look at me! Y/N!â
You both heard your backdoor opening, and in walked your estranged husband who you had been running from. Milesâ eyes were wide as he took in the bloody scene in front of him and he whistled, chuckling. âAlways knew you were a crazy whore.â Tom immediately recognized him from the picture youâd shown him and he let you go, fury filling his expression.Â
Tom attacked him and they fought. Miles had somehow managed to best Tom at one point and he was about to go to town on him when you hit him with a frying pan. It gave Tom the opportunity he needed to get out from under him and before Miles could even try to attack you once he recovered, you held a knife to his throat as Tom grabbed another one, that same fury in his eyes.
âAh, ah, ah,â you told Miles. âOne move and you die.â
âYou stupid bitch, Iâll fucking kill you,â he spit. You pressed the blade into his neck a little more.Â
Tom rushed him, ready to kill him when you held a hand up, stopping him. âNo. He lives.â Tom glared up at you, unsure of why you were stopping him. âWe take him with us, make him watch and hear everything, and we have some fun.â You gave Tom a wicked smile and he returned it, turning it down onto Miles who was bleeding from where youâd cut him. âDo you know a place?â You asked Tom.
âYeah.â He glanced once again at Miles, his smile widening. âI know a place.â
You were suddenly at the cabin, waking up in the middle of the night. Not caring if you were dressed or not, you slipped out of Tomâs arms and padded into the main room. You stood there, watching as Miles slept, or if he was awake like he was the night you and Tom had sex, you stood there with a knife, fucking with his head. Would you kill him? Would you not? You made sure to let him know the child you carried was biologically his but he would never see it born. Tom was its father now and he was much more of a man than Miles, as he must have heard earlier. There was even one night where Tom woke up and found you in the kitchen in the dark, holding a knife over your belly, as if you were going to stab yourself. He knocked the knife out of your hand and asked what you were doing. You said it was Milesâ child and you wanted Miles out of you. Tom held your face in his hands and assured you that the child was his and his alone.
âNo, itâs not,â you murmured.Â
âYes, it is. Listen to me, thatâs my little girl inside of you. Sheâs both of ours. He has nothing to do with it. Y/N, I donât know if you can hear me, but you love this baby and you love me. You want our family to stay together. You told me that! Please! Donât let her hurt our baby!â
âItâs our baby?â You asked in a tiny voice.
âYes, sweetheart, itâs ours. Just ours.â
You allowed him to carry you to bed and hold you there, shushing you soothingly and rubbing your belly, using your hands with his.
And then came the night Miles threatened you. This time, you stood over him with the knife.
âYou dumb whore, you donât have it in you to kill me. You wonât even let your crazy boy toy do it.âÂ
âYeah, because I want to be the one to do it.â A big smile spread across your face and you slashed at his cheek, making him curse.
âGo ahead then! Even if you kill me, youâll never be rid of me. Iâll always be a part of you, inside you, in that kid. Know that, you stupid bitch. I shouldâve fucking killed you when I had the chance!â
You started slicing and then forcefully stabbing and never really stopped. You took pieces off of him (including what could be construed as what he thought was his manhood) and he screamed, and screamed, and screamed. Tom woke up when the screaming started but you didnât stop. He tried to get you to, telling you he would take care of the rest for you, that he didnât want you to hurt yourself or the baby, but you told him no, you wanted to do this yourself. Youâd earned it. Instead, he stood there, waiting, in case you needed him. He nervously watched as you took Miles apart, his eyes repeatedly flickering to your stomach. At one point, though, you could have sworn you noticed a faint smirk on Tomâs face when Miles screamed particularly loudly and his eyes were hard but proud. Only when you were done, though Miles had been dead for a while by this point, did you turn to go back to the room. Tom stopped you with a hand on your shoulder.
âAre you hurt?â You shook your head. âOur baby?â Another shake. He let out a huge sigh of relief. âWhy donât you go take a shower and then get into bed? Iâll clean this up.â
âThanks, baby,â youâd whispered, gripping his face and lifting up on your toes to kiss him. You left Milesâ blood all over his cheeks but he still looked at you with that same reverence he always had. Once you were out of the shower, he was there to run clean hands over your belly, checking for any injuries but not finding any. Youâd smiled and kissed him, not caring about the dried blood on his face when youâd crawled onto his lap and urged him to take off his shirt.
You saw more flashing Images of you in his lap, arching your head up in pleasure, him kissing down the column of your neck, some of the blood from his face transferring onto your skin.  Â
The screams and moans echoed in your ear as you came back to yourself. You felt as if you were losing your balance and you started to fall until Tom caught you in time.
âSweetheart, whatâs wrong?â
You shook your head, not looking at him, tears streaming down your face.Â
âHey, she alright, man?â
âYou need me to call for an ambulance?â
âNo,â Tom assured the onlookers. âThank you but sheâs fine. She has low blood sugar and this happens when she forgets to eat. Let me get her back to the car so I can give her a juice box. Thank you but sheâs okay.â
He lifted you in his arms, grunting, and slowly began the trek to the truck. âI thought we had a deal, sweetheart. But youâre not getting rid of me that easily. Iâm not gonna leave you or our little girl behind at a rest stop. Not happening.â
âTom, I⊠I killed them,â you sobbed, staring up at the sky.Â
He stopped short for a second but then kept moving. âShhh. Just hang on, sweetheart. Weâre almost there.â
âI-I-I killed them.â You started to break apart. âI even threatened my baby.â
Tom picked up speed slightly and did his best to get you both back to the truck. Once there and he had you in the passenger seat, you were already hyperventilating. He gripped your face and forced you to meet his eyes. âSweetheart, we need to get your breathing under control. Letâs slow it down together, okay?â He took your hand and placed it on his chest and he placed a hand on your chest. âFollow me.â
He eventually got you to calm down a little, taking nice deep and even breaths, but it wasnât enough to make you forget what you had seen, what you had done. You thought back to what you had said to Tom. âI canât be with someone who just goes around killing people because they can!â âIf this is going to work with us, as a familyâŠyou canât kill anymore people, Tom.â Youâd blamed him for Cindyâs and Milesâ deaths!
âWhat do you say we go someplace and have that talk now?â
You nodded, more tears falling down your face at the action. He wiped your cheeks with his thumbs and kissed you before settling you into your seat. Within two minutes, you were back on the road again, his hand in yours, and you stared blankly out the window. You were a killer and Tom, even your own baby â they werenât safe.Â
âIâm so sorry, Tom.â
He turned an inquisitive gaze on you.Â
âI blamed you when it was me.â You wiped a tear away. âIâm sorry.â
You both were sitting at a picnic table in a nice parking area off the shoulder of the highway that he had managed to find. Thankfully, no one was really around. The stars beginning to come out might have something to do with that.Â
He took your hand in his and intertwined your fingers, kissing your skin. âI knew why you were saying it. You didnât remember what youâd done. Truthfully, I didnât want you to remember it.â
âItâs no excuse,â you choked out. âAnd my babyâŠâ Your eyes welled up again. âEven sheâs not safe with me.âÂ
He cupped your chin with his free hand and turned you to look at him. âYes, she is. Your ex was the trigger. Now that heâs gone, that lessens the trigger.â
âBut what if she looks like him? Or sounds like him? Or what if she does something like Cindy did and says something to trigger me? Or what if like I told you, she cries too loudly or doesnât put her toys away? Sheâs not safe.â Your eyes hurt from how much crying youâd been doing, you were surprised there were any tears left, but there were. You cried over Cindy. Sure, you didnât care for her after overhearing her that day and finding out sheâd been with Tom, only teasing you about his supposed crush on you because she never thought heâd give you the time of day and it allowed her to tease and flirt with him as well. But she didnât deserve to die over it and certainly not like that. You didnât cry too much over Miles but what youâd done. No human life deserved to be taken the way you had taken his. But you cried the most over what youâd almost done to your baby, what it meant, and how youâd have to let her go once she was born â if she was born.Â
âListen to me, Iâm going to keep you both safe, okay? Just like I promised.â
âAnd you,â you sobbed. âWhy would you want to be with a murderer? A cold-blooded killer like me? What if Iâd killed you? Or what if I do kill you? Tom, what Iâve done is bad enough but if I did something to you, I donât think Iâd ever come back from that. Or if I did something to my baby.â
He pulled you into his arms and you cried against his shirt. He moved in and gently nuzzled you despite the wetness and sniffling. âBecause I know what itâs like.â
âWhat are you talking about, you know whatâs like? Fearing going to sleep that you may not wake up from because your significant other might kill you? I know all too well what thatâs like and I donât want that for you.â
His jaw tightened but he shook his head, bumping his nose gently into yours. âNo. I mean, I know what itâs like to have a trigger and not remember what Iâve done half the time, while leaving bodies trailing behind me.â
You hiccuped and pulled back to look at him. âWhat do you mean?â
He placed his forehead against yours. âRemember I never wanted to talk about my past?â
You nodded. âYeah, you said it was too painful and I didnât want to push.â
Tom let out a heavy sigh. âYeah. But Iâm going to tell you everything, even when you donât want to hear certain parts. I donât remember a lot but Iâll tell you what I can. And Iâm only going to gloss over my trigger, not go into full detail. Iâm sure it would be fine, but I donât want to even risk it. Okay?âÂ
You took in a ragged inhale and buried your fingers into his shirt. âOkay.â
He smiled at you reassuringly and tenderly brushed hair out of your face. âOkay.â
Tom kept an eye on you while you slept, hugging onto his arm. Today was a big day for you in various ways and he wasnât quite sure if youâd be triggered again.
Heâd been completely honest with you, opening up to you about Harry and how trauma led to this other identity he had no control of. Truthfully, heâd been scared to even mention the name, afraid it would draw the other side of him out. During this whole time with you, from him finding you stabbing Cindy to death in your kitchen to now, heâd felt as if Harry was fighting to come to the surface and join in the fray. Of course, that was something the therapists heâd seen had told him wasnât possible, but even burying Milesâ mutilated corpse and using the pickaxe again felt as if he were approaching a very dangerous line.Â
At some point after Harmony, he wasnât quite sure how long, but he was in control again and Harry was nowhere to be found. He had a healing bullet wound as well as other scrapes on his head and face. He knew he could never go back to Harmony or even be Tom Hanniger again (especially after one internet search on a library computer), so he was forced to become someone else: a different Tom. He probably should have changed his first name, too, but he already had another identity waiting in the wings to take over again, he didnât want another one he needed to worry about becoming, too. Even if it was only for paperwork reasons.
He moved to a new small town, far away from his old life, and began again. He stayed mostly to himself, kept under the radar as much as he could. He was able to find work, doing small odd jobs at first, and then finding work in basically being a handyman of sorts. He had gotten to know the townspeople that way as well as the town itself. Heâd even sought help from a local therapist in the next town over whose resume boasted they specialized in DID. There, the therapist was able to help him understand the disorder better than any doctors in the institution had. He learned about triggers, working to reduce switches (as they called it), and how to overall take control of his life in more ways than one. He had been doing much better and there were no instances where he felt like he was missing time or there was something on the edge of his memories that he couldnât quite remember.Â
And then heâd met you, completely by accident. Heâd bumped into you in the hardware store, literally. Youâd dropped what had been in your hands and seeing the slim curve of your stomach, heâd immediately crouched down to pick them up for you. He locked eyes with you and he could swear you were one of the prettiest girls heâd ever seen. He cleared his throat when he realized heâd been staring at you a little too long. He immediately apologized for bumping into you and you apologized, too. He noted what you had in your hand: spackle.
âIf you donât mind me asking, youâre not planning on doing any painting, are you?âÂ
You glanced at the container in your hands. âOh, this? Oh no. I canât.â You gestured to your stomach. âBut I read on a forum online that spackling is okay.â
He arched a brow at you. âForum online?â
Your cheeks turned adorably pink. âYeah,â you defended. âAs long as it doesnât have high VOCâs I think it said, I should be fine. Plus, I plan to wear a mask and open all the windows, air it out properly.âÂ
âUh huh,â he chuckled. At your frown, he held up a placating hand. âSorry, I justâŠcanât your husband or boyfriend do that for you? So you donât have to?â
Your cheeks turned red now. âAre you saying that I canât do what they can?â You challenged.
âNope. Iâm implying that there are certain things you shouldnât be doing while pregnant. Thatâs all.â You went to say something else but he cut you off. âIâm the local handyman, a fixer upper basically. If your other half is too busy, I can swing by and help you out.âÂ
âOh.â
He handed you his card, noting no ring sitting on your finger. That answered that particular question. âMy cell phone numberâs on there so call me anytime, day or night, and Iâll come by. Are you new in town?â
You studied his card. âIs it that obvious?â
He chuckled and held out a hand. âIâm Tom.â
You took it, smiling, and shook it. âY/N.â Not only did he suddenly love that name but he loved the feel of your soft skin against his. âNice to meet you.â
âNice to meet you, too.â
You ended up calling him two days later to ask him about the spackling and his rates. Ever since your conversation with him in the store, you couldnât get what he said out of your head and now you were worried the online forum was wrong. What he didnât tell you is that he couldnât get your conversation with him out of his head, but for a whole other reason.
After an agreed rate over the phone (heâd given you a break, calling it the newcomer discount so you wouldnât question it or feel badly), he stopped by your house and you showed him where you needed the spackling done. There was a large crack in one of the walls of the living room high up. He couldnât imagine you on a ladder with a mask trying to get this crack spackled â more like he didnât want to imagine it. Cindy had been there, shooting him flirtatious smiles every time you turned your back, which he ignored. Cindy had been fun a time or two but he wasnât interested in anything more than that, something heâd already told her long before he met you. Besides, heâd trade twenty of those flirtatious smiles for one of your warm genuine ones anyday. Heâd thought you very pretty in the store but now he knew heâd been wrong; you were beautiful. And living all alone in this big, old house. It seemed like a crime to him though he was a little happy that you were single.Â
He got vibes early on that there was something in your past that you were running from. You were jumpy, slow to trust, and he could tell it took a little bit for you to feel comfortable with him alone in the house. He didnât push and he appreciated your not pushing either when it came to his own past. But he liked being around you and he definitely liked you. It took some time but you eventually got to know one another and he was helping you slowly restore your home (mostly for free at this point, what he referred to as the friend rate which made you smile and shake your head, still insisting on paying him which he would refuse). You never talked about who the father of your baby was or where he might be, but it was obvious you were going about things on your own. He admired you for that and he loved watching you walk around, lovingly rubbing your bump that was getting bigger each week.
And then, on New Yearâs Eve, after circling each other for months, you kissed him. From then on, he was yours. Even when you opened up to him about your past, all he wanted to do was protect you and the baby, be good to you, and be there for you both. He loved you well before he said it, which was after you had said it first because he hadnât wanted you to feel any pressure whatsoever. Soon enough, you both had started talking about the future â particularly, the very near future. Tom wasnât sure if he was ready to be a parent or if heâd even be a good one but he knew one thing: he loved you and your little girl very much. Heâd do anything for you two and that was good enough for him.
Then came the day Cindy made the fatal mistake of setting you off. He still wasnât sure if it was what Cindy said in the foyer or if she said something else to you when she came by later, but something caused you to snap. Tom had returned from the hardware store and had been shocked to find you covered in blood, violently stabbing the woman who appeared to already be dead. You werenât a violent person by nature. You two hardly ever argued and if you did, it was resolved within minutes. Heâd never seen you argue with anyone else. Even when you got moody occasionally, sure, he knew to tiptoe around you, but you didnât even get mean. So he had no idea where the hell this had come from. But before he could get through to you to find out if you and the baby were okay, your piece of shit ex showed up. That had been the first night Tom had felt Harry swimming dangerously close to the surface, waiting to take over. No matter what any therapist said; he knew Harry was there, he could feel him, doing his best to take over though Tom fought it. If Harry took over, he would kill every living being in the room, and that Tom would not allow to happen. Especially not when you and the baby were in the same room.
Tom let you make the call on your ex (even though he didnât completely understand it) and got you out of there. Later that night, when you passed out, heâd checked you for injuries as well as the baby. He didnât find any except some shallow cuts to your arms. He gently cleaned them and he was determined to keep a close eye on you. When you finally came to the next day, heâd had no choice but to tie you up much like your ex to wait and see what you would do. He noticed you were you again though you were looking fearfully at him. He hated to see it but he also knew it could only mean one thing: you hadnât remembered what you did. He didnât need to be a therapist to realize that you might possibly have the same situation going on that he did. When you accused him of killing Cindy, it confirmed it, though he wondered how you knew she was dead. He chalked it up to you starting to switch back and seeing the carnage before heâd been able to get you out of that house. Â
So while Tom wasnât a fan of it, he dangerously walked the line between himself and who he knew Harry to be. Your ex got the worst of Harryâs qualities: the violence, the ruthlessness, and the fury. You got the lower end of a few displeased glares and the raised volume of his voice once or twice. He didnât know what he was dealing with just yet, though he suspected, and he hoped if he kept you you, even if you were fearful of him, heâd be able to figure out how to help you.
He didnât agree with keeping Miles alive, especially since Miles was a threat to you and your baby and he had also seen what youâd done to Cindy. It was better to take care of him before he became an even bigger problem. While Tom didnât relish taking a life, and he didnât want to wake up Harry, it was clear that Miles needed to go. It was obvious that he was a trigger for you.
While he had been confused at your claims of grogginess, it soon became clear why you were really tired. Youâd worried Tom the nights heâd woken up in bed, alone, and found you either hovering over Miles, taunting him, or watching him sleep. Youâd even insisted he sit Miles up from where heâd left him in the corner the first night so the asshole could watch and listen. Watch and listen to what Tom hadnât been sure of but when you told him to make love to you the next night, to be loud while loving you, he got a pretty good idea on what the listen part was. The following morning, he realized you wanted Miles to watch what was happening before his very eyes: you were being well taken care of, you were creating a family, and you were loved. EVen though you didnât remember it most days, he tried to do right by you â both of you. The other side of you hadnât told him her name yet, but he was waiting for it. The switches were only too obvious now.Â
Youâd scared the hell out of him, though, the night he found you holding a knife over your stomach. He had already been assuring you that he loved your baby and you, that you would be a family, that your little girl was his. After that, he stepped it up while also hiding all of the sharp objects and anything that could be used as a weapon against yourself (or him) all over the cabin. Each morning, youâd never remember these incidents, though youâd held clear conversations with him and sometimes your ex.
Then youâd brutally killed Miles that night, another night Harry had been simmering on the edge. As he watched you take your revenge, when you kissed him, covering him in blood, then making love to him â that had been the closest Harry had come to breaching the surface since the night Miles showed up in your kitchen. The only thing that kept Harry back, Tom believed, was the recurring thought of you and the baby.Â
Miles being dead forced him to move up his timeline. He had this cabin for a while, only bringing you once to show you around, in case he had to ever grab you and run if your ex showed up (though he didnât tell you that because he didnât want to worry you). That was why he had replicated the nursery down to every single detail. You had worked so hard on that nursery, you were so excited when it was finished, that he hated for you to lose it should you have to run. So he slipped up to the cabin a couple of days a week when you werenât with him, and worked on getting it set up. He had even stocked the kitchen in case (only buying perishables on your second trip up there when you were truly on the run). Heâd also made sure to put a down payment on a small house some ways away in case you both needed a fresh start elsewhere. And that was where he was driving you now.
Heâd meant what he said, if you wanted him gone, he would be, but he hoped youâd keep him with you. He was already worried about your breakdown from earlier today and your constant worry for your babyâs safety. Not to mention, your ex had been a cop. While they would most likely never find his body, they would associate his disappearance with you and you would always be sought after. And since Tom had disappeared with you, theyâd either think you killed him as well or that heâd helped. So heâd alway be sought after as well. That had been one of the reasons he wanted to get out of Dodge as soon as possible but also, he wanted you as far from your main trigger as possible. And he also wanted to get you help, the same help heâd gotten (though heâd have to find another therapist now). Though he was pretty sure the baby was safe, like he kept assuring you, it wouldnât hurt to get a second opinion, an official one.Â
He glanced down at you, his eyes softening as he took you in. He loved you deeply and he wanted to be with you. He loved your baby and he wanted to be there for her, stepping in as her dad if youâd let him like you had both originally planned. You had one more month to go until the baby arrived. He hoped this new house, this new life he was bringing you to made you happy. He was going to set up the nursery again for you and this time youâd have a real living room and dining room. The kitchen wouldnât be so cramped or outdated and you would have a nice, comfortable mattress to sleep on at night. It may not be what your old house was but he would still make it as nice as possible for you. Once he sorted out your paperwork through an old contact of his, you would have access to doctors, the hospital â whatever you needed. The house had a nice backyard for kids to run and play in and the swingset came with the deal which was nice. Tom had even checked to make sure it was in a good school district and a safe neighborhood.
You moved in your sleep, cuddling his arm more and murmuring something he couldnât make out. He smiled down at you and leaned over to drop a kiss onto your head before glancing back at the road. Â
He was going to take care of you. Both of you. And the baby. He would keep you all safe. Just like heâd promised.

I wanna talk about the scene in the museum with Azul...
(SPOILERS FOR BOOK 3 AHEAD. ALSO LOTS OF RAMBLING! :D)
During Ch. 38 of Book 3, Azul and Yuu have a short conversation post-overblot in the underwater museum place. I always felt that this bit of dialogue was weirdly charged? The whole scene felt very intimate to me (and the soft music in the background doesn't help lmao), but I never knew WHY since nothing said was inherently romantic.
So, I went back and re-read through every post-overblot and realized that Azul is the only who who has a one-on-one conversation with Yuu after their overblot??
It's rare enough to have one-on-one conversations between Yuu and another character, but then Azul goes a step further. He's the only one to open up to Yuu about his problems:
Some of the other overblot boys talk about their problems, but not to Yuu specifically. It's more of a declaration than confiding in someone, you know? (E.g. Riddle talking about how he prefers milk tea even though the rules stipulate lemon tea)
We, the players, are shown flashbacks of the overblot boys to explain how they reached this point but I can't recall if Yuu is privy to this information as well. (It's theoretically possible since Yuu already has visions / dreams of the Great Seven, but no one ever mentions it so who knows. I'm personally on the side of Yuu NOT knowing because it feels a bit invasive that they'd have this knowledge of people who weren't ready to share it.)
Regardless of whether Yuu can or cannot see those flashbacks, Azul is the only one to willingly talk about his motivations to Yuu. For Azul, this is especially important as he's so protective of his image as a clever and upstanding housewarden, and yet here he openly admits to Yuu that he was a bit of a loser as a kid (his words not mine!).
I guess you could argue that he felt there was no reason to hide it anymore since Yuu already saw him as a chubby octopus baby, but he didn't have to talk about it at all if he didn't want to. But he did. On his own. With no prompting. (Really, though. Yuu can either say they want to make sure he puts the photo back or that they're worried about him, and either way he drops his lore on them lol) And then Yuu tries to help him feel better??
To my knowledge, Yuu doesn't do this with any of the other overblot boys, either. I could have missed it during my research, but if they did it wasn't nearly to the same extent as with Azul.
I still don't know why Azul felt like opening up to Yuu. He didn't have to, but maybe he wanted to? Maybe he wanted to try his hand at being genuine for once and felt Yuu was the least intimidating person to do it with (the magicless human that they are). Who knows? I wish there were more scenes like this. It makes Yuu feel more included in the story. I also think it shows a lot of growth on Azul's end to open up about his problems to Yuu of his own volition.
I'm not sure what I wanted to say with this post, only that I wanted to get my thoughts out there about this scene because it always stood out to me. I felt there was always an undercurrent of something and I think it's because this was the only post-overblot private conversation we got with Yuu and an overblot boy, plus the added encouragement from Yuu at the end.
I'm curious to know if anyone felt the same way about this scene or if I'm just imagining things. I'm also interested in hearing any theories why Azul suddenly felt the urge to open up to Yuu, if you've got them!
Thanks for enduring my rambling!
Bonus!
Azul's so funny for trying to play it off all cool like he isn't doing flips and princess twirls in his head rn. Yuu laid it on THICK. We all know he's freaking out internally.
#i do have a theory for why only azul got this one-on-one with yuu post-overblot but that's a whole other long winded post lol#azul x yuu shippers win this one i s2g#this is just a really cute scene okay i wanted to mention it#i LOVE analysis btw#twisted wonderland#twst#azul ashengrotto#twst azul#cheekinrambles

hi! i apologize if this is outside your ballpark. i recently came across a post about how religion appears in bbc's merlin and it got me thinking about religion in arthurian legend in general. i was wondering if you have any thoughts on the topic? what religions do the characters follow and how does it impact their lives? i know most of the 'cast' is christian but even then medieval christianity is different enough from modern christianity that i constantly feel like i'm missing some nuance/context when i read arthuriana. do other religions feature (such as judaism, islam, pagan spirituality) and are there any essays on it or books where that's explored? thank you for all you do and have a great day!
Hello!
So Iâm definitely no religious scholar of any kind. Yet I somehow managed to write an obscenely long post in reply. I've provided copious amounts of literature on everything I'm discussing here, so I encourage anyone who sees this to read what's provided and form their own opinion. Although my reply is based on the Medieval stories I've read and quoted as well as the essays and books of people far more qualified than I am, it's still my own interpretation, and shouldn't be taken as the final word on this highly complex subject. If anyone finds something here I've gotten wrong, please don't hesitate to educate me otherwise and point me in a direction to learn more!
Without further ado...
The first thing anyone looking into this needs to understand is [most of] the Arthurian stories we have were drafted or documented by Christians, oftentimes monks (ie, people very devoted to their religion). Even the texts like the Mabinogion or The Welsh Triads, which contains no Christianity, wasnât written down until the 12th century after the oral tradition had passed through the Christianizing of Britain. Not to mention translation bias, an oft overlooked factor. For example, French characters Lancelot and Galahad were retroactively added to The Welsh Triads to bring the Triads more in line with the widely popular French narrative. Translator Rachael Bromwich has excellent footnotes regarding this in the file I shared above. So just keep that in mind while reading/researching this subject.
More generally speaking, while some characters themselves arenât Christian, such as Muslim Palomides or the occasional Jewish character, the texts are [mostly] from an overtly Islamphobic and antisemitic viewpoint. The depictions of religion in Medieval Arthuriana should never be taken as an indication of how things âreally were,â either in the time itâs meant to take place (ie, the 5th-6th centuries when the Saxons were colonizing Britain) or the time/place it was written in (ie ChrĂ©tien de Troyes wrote from his own 12th century Breton perspective). Point being, itâs all very biased. Perception heavily depends on the place and year things were written and translated. If you're ever unsure which translation of a text will best suit your needs, whether that means accuracy, readability, or containing more robust footnotes, don't hesitate to ask.
That being said, the differences youâre touching on regarding Medieval versus Modern Christianity sometimes stems from Christian Mysticism, which was a prevalent theology in the Middle Ages and still exists today (albeit to a lesser degree). Some contemporary sources on this would be:
The Confessions by Saint Augustine of Hippo
The City of God by Saint Augustine of Hippo
The Book of Divine Works by Saint Hildegard von Bingen
The Letters of Hildegard von Bingen Volume I by Saint Hildegard von Bingen
The Letters of Hildegard von Bingen Volume II by Saint Hildegard von Bingen
The Book of Margery Kempe by Margery Kempe.
Now the thing with Christianity in history and Arthuriana is that the lines between orthodox practice and the mystical was blurred. On an episode about charms, the Medieval Podcast (also available on any podcasting platform like Spotify) explains how people bought and used charms all the time, even within their Christian practice. To them, it was a part of their worship. They may have chanted some words over a sick friend while anointing certain parts of the body in the hopes it would aid in healing. Depending on the time and place, this may or may not have been openly discussed for fear of repercussions or accusations of blasphemy, but it was common enough for historians to have gathered a multitude of examples preserved in spell books. To a desperate Medieval Christian, one of these charms occupied a similar place to Pray the Rosary or Hail Marys in hopes of boosting the success of their endeavor.
So in a similar vein, that concept is sometimes stretched for the sake of an Arthurian story. What you end up with are characters like Merlin, supposedly half-demon, but baptized, therefore his purified magic and prophesizing is considered "Christian;" Morgan le Fay, raised in a nunnery, yet learned necromancy from the holy sisters; and Gawain, who obtained his sun powers, as well as his name, from the hermit that baptized him. At least, so it goes in the Vulgate.
In a way, these people are not magical through their own power, but channeling the divine with the help of their Christian education in order to bestow those benefits, often health, strength, or prosperity related, onto others. (You'll see a lot of real life examples in the contemporary sources I linked above.) Vulgate editor Norris J. Lacy and his translation team left a footnote on the Gawain passage explaining the history of the Gawain/Gwalchmai character that lead me to theorize that this passage might be an attempt by Anonymous to maintain those heightened magical powers while offering a palatable Christian explanation for it.
A similar phenomenon can be seen in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the characters are staunchly Christian, and yet the presence of a green-skinned knight astride a green horse who can survive a beheading is seen as marvelous, even miraculous, rather than monstrous. As Larissa Tracy explains in the essay Shifting Skin Passing as Human Passing as Fay, although the Green Knight is Othered by the court, he's not so Othered as to be held entirely apart. He's "tallest of men" and "half a giant." He is still one of the "in" crowd at least a little bit. So while his green coloring shocks the court, and calls to mind Otherworldly fay, in a way similar to the Lady of the Lake or other such beings, the Green Knight isn't viewed as an enemy of the crown so much as a chance for the court to prove its virtue. In the end, this Green Knight was indeed a man, Sir Bertilak, transformed by Morgan le Fay to take on the monstrous visage, and was indeed "one of them" all along. In this way, concepts which seem magical (read: Pagan) to the modern reader remain steeped in Christian ideals. This extends to Gawain's pentacle shield as well, sometimes misconstrued with a similar Pagan symbol, which the poem outright states represents the five virtues of knighthood or even the five wounds of Jesus Christ. Then again, Rhonda Knight's essay All Dressed Up With Someplace to Go: Regional Identity argues the opposite point, that there is indeed a divide. Knight asserts that the poet has intentionally heightened the dichotomy of insider/outsider, particularly as it relates to the Anglo-Welsh border between Sir Bertilak's Wirral and King Arthur's London Camelot. It's quite plain from the moment the Green Knight enters the scene there's a stark split between the two cultures, whether that be interpreted as the people of Wales and the people of England, or the Otherworld associated with Wales and the dominance of Christianity.
But anyway enough about Christians. Let's talk about my friend Sir Palomides and Islam.
A brief recap for anyone who's unfamiliar with Sir Palomides, he's a Muslim knight, referred to in the Medieval Christian tongue as a "Saracen," who vows to convert to Christianity for the sake of marrying Isolde, but curiously hasn't yet. His father, Esclabor, and both of his younger brothers, Segwarides and Safir, have already converted. Palomides is continuously ostracized for his religion/appearance throughout the narrative and considered lesser than Tristan. This is pretty much always the roles they play. Sometimes Palomides is treated with extreme cruelty, such as in the Post-Vulgate, where Galahad forces him to convert to Christianity at sword point, only for Palomides to be murdered shortly afterward by Gawain once his narrative purpose, ie successful conversion, has been fulfilled.
For this break down, I'm ignoring that portrayal of Palomides as well as the Prose Tristan because they suffer from the issues I already outlined regarding Medieval Christian's malicious depiction of non-Christians. And I hate them</3 We'll be turning our attention to Le Morte d'Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory instead as Palomides is slightly more nuanced there. (Very slightly. "The Good Saracen Sir Palomides" is a loaded sentiment, but Malory was a Medieval Englishman imprisoned for his crimes and writing through his madness. We work with what we have.) The copy I linked is translated by Dr. Dorsey Armstrong, not only because it's very good, but because she authored one of the essays I'll be sharing on the subject. She also has a 24 part lecture series on Arthuriana that I highly recommend.
In Le Morte d'Arthur, and the earlier published La Tavola Ritonda as well as Byelorussian Tristan, Palomides is treated a teensy bit better. In most versions of the story, Palomides misses an appointment to duel with Tristan out of cowardice or dishonor. But Malory has written a scenario in which Palomides missed the appointment not out of subservience to Tristan, but because he was jailed elsewhere and couldn't physically make it. He still gets his ass kicked by Tristan, but Malory's change shifts implicational blame of Palomides to circumstantial blame of his situation which serves to create a more sympathetic character. So while Tristan's perception of events remains the same, Palomides is given a narrative excuse which maintains his honor and integrity in the mind of the reader. Yet as Dr. Dorsey Armstrong points out in her essay, Postcolonial Palomides, after Tristan discovers Palomides suffering a bout of grief-induced madness, Palomides's ability to communicate breaks down, and Tristan is unable to understand him. Palomides occupies a space that his fellow "Saracen" knights, such as Priamus of Tuscany, don't. He's Othered by everyone in the narrative yet gains renown among the Christian knights in part because of his extreme desire to join the Round Table, while resisting the necessity to conform to a religious order and community which does not otherwise accept him. Unlike his father and brothers, Palomides seems more aware of, and resistant to, the predatory systems which dictate their conditional acceptance.
Race as a concept did not exist in the Medieval world, rather it was intrinsically tied to religion. That said, colorism was always present. "Saracen" is a term used to refer to Arab people, but according to Hamed Suliman Abuthawabeh, the etymology of the word itself stems from the color brown, ie referential of skin tone. As it relates to fiction... Ever wonder why the Holy Land of the Middle East in Arthurian Legend, where Galahad, Perceval, and Bors seek the grail, is called "Sarras?" Now you know. This concept is not limited to Middle Eastern characters either. Black people in Medieval stories are referred to as "Moorish," ie from the "Moorlands." To that end, ever wonder why Aglovale's half-Black son is named "Morien?" Or how about Parzival's half-Black brother Feirefiz, who's described as having a mixture of "white and black skin," half his father's "fair country Anjou," half his mother's "heathen land Zassamank" with a face two-toned "as a magpie." (Author Wolfram von Eschenbach and translator Jessie Weston's words, not mine).
The fact is non-white, non-Christian characters are often reduced to their skin color, not only in what labels are applied to them as people, but their religions and falsified homelands as well. The cost of a modicum of respect is total assimilation. It's all or nothing for these characters, and even then, it's not a guarantee. Aside from the especially harrowing treatment of Palomides in the Post-Vulgate, this concept appears yet again in the poem The Turk and Sir Gawain, in which Gawain continuously oscillates between foe and friend with an unnamed Turkish knight, only to conclude the story by violently converting this individual through beheading. The Turkish knight is reborn, now Christian, and at last gains a name and identity, Sir Gromer. The expectation put on Pagan knights is so great they must submit to their white comrades and allow them to, literally, kill their former selves to be worthy of personhood in Christendom.
The same can be said of Jewish characters in Arthurian Legend. They're not often the focal point, but they do pop up from time to time. In La Tavola Ritonda, there's Dialantes the Jewish giant, as well as the beautiful Hebrew damsel of Aigua della Spina, who's curiously married to a Christian knight. Then of course there's the rampant antisemitism in Chrétien de Troyes's Perceval, as well as the continuations, which blame "the treacherous Jews" for killing Christ, while also casting Joseph of Arimathea as a Christian knight who brought the Holy Grail to Britain. Furthermore in The History of the Grail portion of the Vulgate, Joe is said to have "converted to the faith of Jesus Christ" while keeping it secret for fear that "the Jews would have killed him." Tons of revisionism happening. The bulk of the Vulgate makes little to no mention of Jewish people, good or bad, as it's mostly tied to the grail story. That said, when it does come up again in The Death of Arthur, it's a slippery slope into every other prejudice, as the term has become synonymous with evil, particularly as it relates to women.
I couldn't possibly outline the entirety of Medieval Christianity's relationship with other religions in a single tumblr post. Here's a link to my huge folder about Race & Religion in the Middle Ages. The essays and books there discuss this subject in a general sense but there's a sub-folder with Arthurian specific essays to learn more about Palomides, Priamus, Gromer, Morien, Feirefiz, and other characters or texts that touch on race/religion.
Despite all of the above, it's not all bad. Sometimes an author was anti-racist toward the non-Christian characters, yet limited by their time. (Think how Herman Melville portrayed Polynesian Queequeg in Moby Dick, positively, but used phrenology to compliment the shape of his skull by comparing him to that of white people. Not up to modern standards, but an attempt at progressive for its time nonetheless.) Looking at Dutch Arthuriana, while Morien's name is an insensitive indication of his unnamed "Moorish" mother, the only characters in the story who treat Morien poorly, such as the boatmen who refuse to ferry him, are openly condemned, even threatened, by the Knights of the Round Table, including Gareth.
I don't know what to call this writing technique, but it's used (and sometimes underutilized...) today. Essentially, as a means to indicate to the reader that the views of the antagonistic (in this case, xenophobic and anti-Black) character isn't shared by the author, they include another character who refutes and combats the negative behavior and who accepts the oppressed party as they are. However rare, it does happen in Medieval texts.
Last but not least, I'd be remiss to omit the Hebrew King Artus from this discussion. It's an incomplete story, but sets out to retell the Arthurian Legend from a Jewish standpoint. All the characters are Jewish and all religious allusions that were once Christian have been rewritten as Jewish. It has a thorough analysis by the translator and tons of footnotes to indicate the Jewish references throughout the text.
Regarding religion in modern Arthuriana like BBC Merlin, Druids aren't actually present in the Legends, with the one and only exception being The Adventure of MelĂłra and Orlando, which does refer to Merlin as a Druid! There's also the connection made between Merlin and Stonehenge in The History of the King's of Britain by Geoffrey of Monmouth; the word "Druid" is not used, but Merlin describes his own ability to manipulate the stones as "mystical." One has to remember that Druids didn't write down their own history, as it was their way to memorize religious practices and not document anything. All we know about them comes from outside sources, such as Greeks and Romans as well as Christian missionaries come to convert them. As Christianity took hold and figures like Saint Patrick "drove the snakes [Druids] out of Ireland," much of that history was either lost or purposefully maligned. Did the Druids actually participate in human sacrifice? Who knows! Bearing that in mind, we must acknowledge the influence of the several revivals of Druidism and recent boom in Neopaganism; a lot of popular interpretations of Arthurian Legend are just that, the creator's interpretation, and not necessarily indicative of what the historical people would have been doing. To learn more about that, there's Druids: A Very Short Introduction by Barry Cunliffe which I found helpful.
When it comes to Merlin, or Myrddin Wyllt, his character is potentially based on a few different people who really existed, but there isn't a name given to whatever religion they practiced in anything I've read. While the time period did have clearly delineated religions such as Christianity, Judaism, Zoroastrianism (and then Islam), Mithraism, Druidism, etc, there were just as many people who prayed to Jesus Christ while simultaneously leaving out offerings for the local spirits. Most religions come with regional differences, various sects, or shift gradually over time. Saint Patrick himself is said to have had a "fluid identity," as his autobiographical work The Confessions paints him in a fairly positive light as a peaceful missionary, while Dr. Janina Ramirez indicates in her book The Private Life of Saints that other sources characterize Saint Patrick as an aggressor. Some scholars even believe Saint Patrick may have been two different people, combined over the centuries, similarly to Myrddin Wyllt. Modern Arthurian books and shows really lean into a dichotomy between Christianity and the "Old Religion" for the sake of entertainment. But bouts of unrest weren't as fantastical nor made up of two wholly separate, well-defined teams.
Wow this got long. I think we'll leave it at that. I hope that answers your questions! Take care!

Summary: While doing some research to help out Mobius on a 'moonshot project', you and Loki come across a startling revelation about your lives. All your lives.
Pairing: TVA!Loki x TVA!Reader
Word Count: 3.5
Warnings: some talks of smutty times, but overall this is just fluff [let me know if i missed something!]
Things to be aware of: established relationship, talks of soulmates, references to my other stories
"I really don't get why you're in here bugging me for something to do, Y/N," Agent Mobius chuckled, shaking his head as he thumbed through another folder's worth of records that he hadn't told you quite yet what they were for. "No high-level variant threats have been reported, timelines are--well, they're relatively stable. Things are quiet for a change. I say enjoy it while it lasts and go on a vacation or something with Laufeyson. Just don't--"
"Don't cause any Nexus events, yes yes, Mobius, we know." A smile broke out on your face at the sound of Loki's voice cutting off the TVA Agent, your cheeks nearly aching from your grin widening when he walked up behind you and long arms wrapped around your waist, pulling you close. "Thing is we already have partaken in quite a handful of adventures across the timelines, indulging ourselves in theâŠnumerous pleasures and luxuries that they have to offer."
One look at how you were reddening with the implications of your boyfriend's words had your fellow Agent scrunching up his face in feigned appalment. "Time and place, you two, jeez."
You and Loki shared a confused look when an analyst from another table yelled "And you did it at my birthday dinner!" and rendered Mobius into a cackling heap, laughing into his sleeve to muffle the sound.
"AnywayâŠ" you spoke up, making the grey-haired agent look back up at you. "Are you sure there isn't anything we can help with? Doesn't even have to be high-level, I'll literally take up a timeline reset caused by a woman at a grocery store grabbing a can of peaches instead of a can of mangoes, I'm getting antsy here."
"Alright alright fine," he sighed, motioning toward you and the god behind you. "It's something of a moonshot but we've been trying to find proof of the existence of soulmates throughout the timelines, so we need concrete cases that no matter the circumstance, no matter the obstructions between two souls, they always find each other and they always end up together."
"You mean like in that TV show where they've got fairytale characters in like Maine or something and there's this couple that constantly goes--"
"I'll find you, I will always find you," you and Mobius said at once, causing you both to break out into laughter.
"Exactly like that," he confirmed when he calmed down some. "Preferably without the cheesy catchphrase because in case you do find one I would actually prefer to not include in my report that all soulmates have some line they tell each other that's so cheesy it's pungent."
"Right soâŠsoulmates, no cheesy lines, across the timelines. Got it." You gave him a little salute before you went off to the shelves, holding Loki's hand as he followed a few steps behind you.
"Darling we have been scouring through files for hours. Perhaps it's time to report back to Mobius. Tell him that every pair we've found so far have broken the pattern at some iteration down the line. The most we've come across is a pair that were together for five iterations of their lives before the sixth showed they never even met in that lifetime."
Your shoulders slumped over when you placed your latest folder on your pile, of failed attempts, just about half the size of Loki's own little mountain of case files. Maybe he was right; every possible lead you'd found all ended up a dud, and that alone would be proof enough that this was all a wild goose chase of an assignment for Mobius.
Then again, he did call it a moonshot, so the realization didn't smart too much.
The frustration you felt began to melt away the moment Loki's hands touched your shoulders, leaning into him when he started working at the knots that he found with expert precision. "Okay, you're right," you sighed. "Let's go tell Cubey his moonshot's a single needle in a city of haystacks."
He placed a kiss to the top of your head, using his seiĂ°r to stack the case files into neat stacks arranged by file number. "Thank the Norns that ridiculous magic dampener fractured some when the timelines diverged," he mumbled, chuckling into your hair. "Now how about I bring us to a nice hot spring and we could simplyâŠenjoy one another's company?" You let out a giggle when his hands traveled down your sides, lightly grasping your waist and pulling you against him.
If only you could have silenced the little voice in your head when you were just seconds away from him whisking you off to Jökulsårlón or Hakone, clad in a dark emerald bikini that your lover would peel off of you as he made good on his promise for you both to enjoy each other's company.
"I can nearly hear the thoughts forming in your mind, darling," he cooed, pressing his lips to the back of your neck, chuckling against your skin when you wordlessly confirmed what he'd said by slumping over again. "What is it?"
"Just one last try?" You wouldn't ever let yourself live it down if you'd gone down this road and not looked at this particular set of files.
He let out a sigh, his slightly cool breath tickling your skin before pressing a tender kiss to the back of your head. "One last attempt. And if we reach another dead end--"
"You can whisk me away to any destination of your choice and have your wicked way with me," you finished for him, letting out a little yelp when he brought his lips to the spot between your neck and shoulder, playfully nipping at the skin.
"What a deliciously reckless promise, my love," he teased, smirking against your neck when he proceeded to lightly suck at the sensitive skin and you had to bite your lip to muffle the whimper that slipped through your lips. "I look forward to collecting on it in a short while."
He rested his chin on your shoulder, still holding you close when you called out for a bit of assistance on your final hunch. "Minutes?"
Your eyes squinted to adjust to the sudden brightness when the orange hologram appeared on the desk in front of you. "Well hello there, lovebirds. What can I do for y'all?" she asked with a small wave of her cartoonish stick arm.
"Could you pull up our files?"
"Well sure I can, Y/N! How much of your files are we talking here?"
You shared a look with Loki before you answered, "All of them?"
"Before I hand 'em over, I think it's best y'all know from the get go that you're about to deal with thousands of files. It'll take a whole lotta time before you can sort 'em all out," she cautioned you both, already giving you a digital visual of how many files she'd already begun to pull up.
"Minutes, as I've come to understand it, we variants apparently have all the time in the world," you countered, shrugging your free shoulder and giving the living hologram a little smile. "We can take it."
"Alright well suit yourself," she comically shrugged both her hands before making the files that were already on the table disperse and go back to their original locations throughout the library shelves before stacks upon stacks of folders materialized in their place. All of them sectioned off into two sides. "Have at it, y'all."
You picked up the first folder from the stack closest to you, your brows knitting together already once you read the name on the file. "Minutes, I don't think this is mine, it says Eve but that's not--"
"Your name?" she finished for you. "Darlin', Y/N is your name in this lifetime--Well, the lifetime you came from before your Nexus event, you get what I mean. The file you're holding is from another lifetime, heck, might even be from another timeline. But one look at that file and you'll see that that's you. All of these are you. Doesn't matter if you're goin' by a different name, the soul remains the same."
The air left your lungs when you opened the folder to find a picture of you with pale skin and matted ivory hair on the front of the file. Only thing was that this version of you wasn't quite human in her lifetime. In fact centuries of it were spent as a vampire.
A few moments later she spoke up again. "Well then that's my cue. Happy sortin', y'all!" And then she disappeared. Leaving you and Loki alone with your couple thousand files each to rifle through.
Had you been there on a different objective, you would have spent a bit more time thumbing through the pages that detailed the life of this version of you, rubbing elbows with numerous prominent figures throughout history and having her fair share of trysts with a handful of them. But your only focus was her most prominent affair. Her great love.
When you reached that page, you felt yourself go breathless once again looking at the picture that stared back at you. "Loki," you breathed out, holding out the file to him so he could see for himself. The god's eyes widened at the photo in front of him. The ebony hair may be matted and the skin somehow even paler than his usual complexion, but there was no denying it. This Eve's companion throughout her years, this Adam, was another lifetime's iteration of Loki.
He began to rifle through his own stacks of folders, finding the one that had the same variant number and interlocked his and your folders together, starting a new stack at the center of the desk. "If you're right, and this yields the moonshot result that Mobius has been searching for, you can pick the destination and have your wicked way with me."
"Why Mischief, how reckless of you," you said coyly, batting your eyelashes at him. "What if I wanna tie you up?"
"It's endearing that you believe you could, my darling." He lightly poked your side, quickly pulling you into his arms the second you started wriggling and giggling in his direction. "But if that is truly what you want then I can promise not to break out for an hour."
"Two," you countered.
"Ninety minutes."
"Deal."
"Now if I'm right and this leads to another dead end, I whisk you away to any destination of my choosing for a fortnight, no tempads, no missions, and not a stitch of clothing on this glorious form of yours." His lips skimmed the side of your face, pressing a kiss to your cheek when you let out a squeal at his finger deftly undoing the top button of your shirt. "Do we have a deal, my love?"
"Okay okay," you relented, turning your head to steal a quick kiss before bring your attention back to the folders you were about to sort through. Before you could pull away, his free hand went up to the back of your head and deepened the kiss.
"What if I told you I've been plagued with visions of stripping you bare and laying you out on the desk before me? That I'd been thinking of enjoying every delectable inch of you as if you were my own personal dessert board?" You let out a gasp at the lustful image his words had conjured in your mind, allowing him to easily lick into your mouth and turn you into putty in his arms the moment your tongues met.
"I'd say I'm not surprised," you breathed out when he pulled away, placing your hand over his before he could undo a third button from your shirt. "But the faster we get this done, the faster oneof us will be at the other's mercy and maybe you can even bring that desk fantasy of yours to life." You pressed another quick peck to his lips before managing to wriggle your way out of his embrace, jutting your chin at his side of the desk. "Pick a file, Mischief."
The next file had you and him initially on opposite sides of the Battle of New York, your story starting in Stuttgart when he had clones force you down on your knees and the injuries from that encounter permanently damaging you. A handful of times throughout the day of the actual battle, he went out of his way to save your life, ensuring your safety from a fatal fall and even the Hulk; the document even had a mention of him asking Thor of what came of you after he was apprehended because you weren't among the Avengers that saw him off to Asgard, only to find out the true extent of your injuries. Then he found himself back on Earth to serve his sentence and falling in love with you, using his magic to undo the physical damage that he dealt you. And then you two went on your own adventure to have 'do-overs' in places that held bitter memories for him, from Stuttgart to Asgard and even the balcony in Stark Tower.
Another file saw Loki as an English baronet named Thomas Sharpe, and you as his final wife and a sort of partner in crime. Initially you teamed up to play a dangerous game of sneaking around his ancestral home to gather and send out evidence that would put his incestuous and murderous sister Lucille behind bars, and somewhere along the way you two had genuinely fallen in love with one another.
You then found a good handful of scenarios where you both lived in the Avengers Compound, having a bad case of mutual pining and both of you being too hesitant and overcome with doubt that neither of you made a move until the situation practically forced you to confess. One even involved you photographing him for an Avengers calendar where he stripped for you during his session.
"Yeah, this definitely sounds like you," you joked when you showed him one of the pictures from the photoshoot in question where he laid on his side on a white bed wearing nothing but a pair of white boxers. When you opened the next file, you let out a whiny groan out of sheer frustration and disappointment.
"Darling, that is a sound I only wish to hear when I elicit it from you. What's wrong?"
"Might as well just lie down on the table right now because there's no way this isn't a dead end." You waved the file in your hand in the air.
"Much as I would thoroughly enjoy claiming this particular prize, perhaps we need not be so hasty, my love. Tell me what would be such a hindrance that you'd be ready to give up your theory--"
"Place of Birth: Asgard," you read out, cutting him off. "Born to Lady Sif of the Warriors Four--"
"Alright well Sif would surely have some choice words with me if I courted you but--"
"And the Crown Prince Thor, God of Thunder." You gave him a look as if to say "This is why", the realization dawning on him as well that yes, this would be the dead end that would grant him his victory. And yet for some reason, you decided to keep on turning the pages. "Gotta be honest, though, I thought that what would break our streak is if we never met in these--Oh what in the Game of Thrones Targaryen nonsense is this??"
"What is it?"
"The streak isn't broken yet," you croaked out, the disbelief entering his eyes as he frantically started searching for his corresponding variant file. "We were married for two and a half thousand years."
"I surrendered my claim to the throne of Asgard for you," he declared in astonishment. "We have children in this timeline." His voice began to hitch at the end, making you immediately close the distance between you to lace your fingers together.
"Looks like even something as monumental as being your brother's daughter couldn't stop us," you noted with a little smile, breaking out into a full grin when your comment made Loki exhaled in a rather loud chuckle that traveled across the library. You took your two folders and interlocked them, adding to the pile in the center. "Let's keep going."
It was several hours later that you two had finally found your way back to the desk that Mobius occupied, the more tenured agent pinching the bridge of his nose and rubbing at the inner corners of his eyes in clear frustration.
"You still got nothing, Cubey?"
"One of these days I'm gonna find a name for you that's just as annoying, Y/L/N, just you wait," he groaned, his posture visibly slumping when he saw the interlocked stacks of folders that you were carting around. "What in the name of the Alioth is that?"
"We found one," you proudly stated. "Proof that soulmates exist andâŠonly some of them have a catchphrase."
"That's just one?!" he boomed, immediately getting shh'd by a more elderly analyst a few tables behind him to which you and Loki shh'd her right back without missing a beat. You nodded your answer to Mobius. "So what's the catchphrase?"
"I was made to be yours," you began, letting go of the cart to hold your hand out to Loki.
"And I yours," he finished, lacing your fingers together before draping his arm over your shoulder and pulling you closer to him.
"Wait a damn minute," Mobius said suspiciously, pointing a finger between the two of you. "Are you two trying to tell me that the first and so far only case of soulmates we have on record is--"
"Us," you finished for him, nudging the cart in his direction with your foot. "Every single lifetime on every single timeline accounted for."
"What about your own?" he questioned. "You both mentioned that you'd never met your timeline's version of each other prior to your Nexus events."
"Well see that's the thing. These files only cover everything prior to a variant's Nexus event, or what the events were in their own respective sacred timelines. We met each other after our Nexus events. So maybe our souls never found each other in the lives that we left behind becauseâŠwe were meant to find each other here."
"HuhâŠ" he mused, looking carefully at the two of you. "Could be. Nice catch, you two. I knew I made a good call giving you a partner, Loki."
"My darling mortal is quite brilliant," your lover beamed, pressing a tender kiss to the top of your head. "I believe I owe you a debt of gratitude for our introduction."
"Well, you really don't have to but if you feel so compelled, I'm willing to take a jet ski and a vacation to Miami if you two can swing it."
"We'll call you if anything serious pops up, just keep your tempad charged," you shot back, extending your free hand toward him to shake. "But really, Cubey. Thank you. For introducing us. For vouching for me and making sure that I didn't get pruned during my trial with Rennslayer--"
"Otherwise you might have crossed paths with that one-handed variant in the Void and who knows what nefarious and depraved intentions he would have had with you," Loki interjected, resting his head on yours.
"You have a Captain Hook variant?"
"Nah it was a president," Mobius answered with a wave of his hand. "Got his hand bit off by an alligator."
"SoâŠa Captain Hook variant."
"Yeah, you know what you're right. Loki has a Captain Hook variant. You'll meet him soon enough when you get sent on a mission to the Void. Loads of highly dangerous variants usually find themselves there when they try to escape processing."
"If he even dares touch you I'll divest him of his remaining hand," Loki grumbled, once again pressing his lips to your temple. "That heathen can find his own variant of you. You're mine."
"All yours," you beamed, bringing your joint hands to your lips to press a kiss to his knuckles. "And speaking ofâŠwe're off for a few weeks, Cubey. We have a date to get to."
"Please don't get arrested for indecent exposure. Or public fornication," the senior agent groaned. "That's a timeline I'll need therapy for if I have to be the sorry ass to reset it."
Neither of you responded other than a little wave and a thumbs up in his direction as you walked away, the god giving you a dimpled smirk as you two made your way to your shared apartment.
"Where shall we head to first, little mortal? A hot spring? Or perhaps a nice scenic tundra? Or perhaps a cherry blossom forest? I can already picture your beauty with the backdrop of the falling petalsâŠ"
He stopped listing options when he saw you shaking your head, mirroring his smirk with one of your own. "Bedroom first. And give me your tie. You owe me ninety minutes."
A/N: I'm so glad to finally get this out for y'all to see! This was originally supposed to up weeks ago for something but some of my own revelations were made (translation: I got bitch slapped in the face by reality) which led to the postponing of this story. Anyways, I hope y'all liked it even if it is kinda cringe and silly. I'm always gonna be cringe and silly, so manage expectations accordingly. đ„Žđ«Ą
Also if you got all the references within the files (except the OLLA one that's a freebie) I officially love you. đđ

i went crazy (as i am known to do) and drew BOTH of each daily prompt for @raincodeshipweek! nothing past PG-13 here. double check the tags for ships below - or if you want to be surprised, jump in and see them all here:
Hurt/Comfort - Clockmare - I remember a while ago @pixelatedraindrops did a poll over which of the two to draw sick in bed⊠Halara's cat allergies won out, but I thought the opposite scenario of Fubuki needing recovery from overusing her rewind powers was cute too! This is a very cute ship that needs more love!
Healing - Kokolight - This is *THE* ship that's all about healing. (Emotional healing at least.) Yuma learns a lot from Vivia about how to embrace the uncomfortable parts of life⊠and Vivia learns a lot from Yuma about how not to let that diminish your spark. Plus, by the end, they understand what each otherâs been through more than any other characters... almost. Also, dat height difference. Good shit.
Dancing - Aetheria trio - Similar bonding over shared grief here! But this time there's three of them! Big 3 of Cups energy. It's a shame we never really got to see much genuine interaction between Yoshiko, Waruna, and Kurane during the game's story⊠but sometimes the most fun parts are what we get to imagine for ourselves, hmm? Anyway, yeah. These three are bonded for life. (Too bad it wasn't a very long one...)
Domesticity - Viviakou - There's nothing funnier than two guys with opposite behaviors. Vivia wedges himself into the crack between the bed and the wall as far as he can. Yakou spreads out and takes up more room than the bed even has. Plus, he snores. Disasters, both of them. âŠI was going to try and come up with another ship for this prompt, since - spoilers - there'll be more Viviakou later on... but I thought of this image and laughed hard enough I couldn't not draw it!
Sun/Rain - Yakou/Amaterasu Researcher. - One of the happiest moments of Yakou's life was when his wife got him a boat for his birthday. A whole boat!!! A portable office! Never had he felt so loved before. âŠNever has the sun shone that brightly again. He hates the rain.
Stars - Clockbolt - Fubuki is staring out wistfully at the rain clouds, lamenting that she cannot see her star - the one her parents bought for her. But luckily - âDon't worry, Princess, I'll be your starâŠ!â says Desuhiko. Bolder, brighter, and much, much closer than her faraway prizeâŠYeah, I think Fubuki would eat that up. This is a fun ship. I like that Desuhiko - against all odds - treats Fubuki like a person. And ironically I think that would make her like him more!!
Flowers - Furroughs - What else could I have drawn for 'flowers,' honestly? It's a cheap bouquet of Black-Eyed Susans! I can't see this as a healthy relationship, honestly, but that's what makes it fun! Imagining them as childhood friends who used to be really close but grew apart in adulthood strikes just the right chord of melancholy with me. Even more heartbreaking if you see them both as trans - imagine Yakou's so excited to have a friend like him, and then as soon as Seth transitions he's like "you don't know me. never speak to me again." Mmm, I do so love to put Yakou through the wringer.
Memories - Yumagami - Sometimes you don't know what you've got until it's gone. I imagine Yuma goes through phantom pains after their pact gets broken, not knowing whose laughter keeps ringing through his ears, what's up with that tingly spot on his cheek, or why he can't look at a barrel without his face feeling hot. (Though, he's probably astute enough to put together the clues...)
First Times - Viviakou - The first time Yakou heard Vivia say that catchphrase, it didn't feel very good.
Final Moments - Viviakou - ...The last time didn't feel very good either.
Swap - Vivia/Amaterasu Researcher - Okay, hear me out. If Yakou had managed to run up that hill, make a deal with Kodaka, and get him to swap their places - that is, he dies while his wife survives and becomes Chief of the Nocturnal Detective Agency - I think Vivia would think the same of Mrs. Furio that he did of Mr. Furio (that is, helplessly smitten). EXTREMELY underrated. Please ship this with me.
Alternate Universe - Zilara - My personal pet rarepair!!! Alas, our two confident creature-lovers have been kept from each other by the cruel hands of fate. So, I cope by drawing them getting fancy little drinks together. This is an homage to Boba AU, of course, but honestly, while drawing this, I was picturing them as students at the local prestigious college campus. Maybe they're members of frat Alpha Beta Omega or something.
Past/Future - Makoyuma - This one's more of a concept/pitch than a fully explored scene, but hear me out: time travel AU. What if Yuma meets a mysterious masked stranger who turns out to be a tech-savvy time traveler from a destroyed future... but then also turns out to be himself, somehow? How is there someone who looks exactly like him, 5000 years from now? What's the connection between Yuma and Makoto? And why are they so drawn to each other?
...The last prompt for the official Ship Week is a free day - so I'm going to take the day off! Though, there are a lot of other ships I lament not shouting out here - Kokobolt, Kokomare, Twimare, Fubugami, just to name a few!!! But I'm gonna give myself a break for now. Don't worry, you'll see more art from me soon - maybe even print versions of this, and some of my other Rain Code fanart. And if there's a specific ship or scenario you really can't wait to see... my commissions are open! ;D

CARMEN SANDIEGO? In 2024? It's more likely thank you think! Please excuse the shit quality for some reason I wasn't allowed to upload the normal pdf and I had to upload a fucking screenshot???
So my friend convinced me to watch Carmen Sandiego and since he's watching ALL of Ninjago for me I thought it was the least I could do to watch four season of a show with a pretty decent concept but uh... yeesh, don't get me wrong the show is really fun but lord have mercy does it have problems especially the last two seasons which were just so wildly disappointing to me. It went from a show with an interesting look on morals to pure pro-cop and mostly black and white thinking so quick (that not mentioning the breaking up a found family full of people with abandonment issues) it was honestly just so disappointing so me and the friend who introduced it to me decided to rewrite it! (I will not be animating nor do I plan on doing more than MAYBE a comic or art piece here and there because my chronic pain ridden ass can not handle that much lol)
The main goals are to:
1) Flesh out characters that aren't Carmen and actually give them reactions based on their lived experiences and how they might realistically react instead of what the show needed to move the plot along
2) Having characters other than Carmen be actually relevant to the plot the main one being Chase Devineaux who we're gonna kind of have as a parallel to Carmen (trust me yall) as kind of a "What if Carmen didn't have her friends/family to ground her and fall back on" but for all the Chase fans out there (gods I hope there's some other than me) he will be getting a happy ending but bro is getting put through the RINGER first
3) Have both A.C.M.E (now standing for Administration for Containing and Monitoring Evil) and V.I.L.E be the bad guys. Also just as an extra bit of fun we're making VILE a full blown cult, they were very cult like in the show so we're just gonna make it one. Both are going to be very morally questionable and while it'll take a bit longer for ACME to show it's true colors don't you worry they definitely will ;)
4) We're doing canonical lgbtq+ rep, I know the show teased a lot of relationships and really only gave yall background gays not to say thats bad but we can do better than just a brief shot of a damn taco truck. I mean like come on in a story about a young woman going against the government for the greater good why not put some rep into it ya know!
5) We're making it light sci-fi, not like SUPER high tech but definitely beyond what we've got currently, as shown with Carmen's prosthetic, and don't worry I'm doing my research as a disabled person I know how it feels to be misrepresented or ignored so I want to make sure I'm being realistic
6) PLAYER ISN'T GOING TO BE A CHILD! I don't know if this bothered anybody else but to me it was really weird that this 16 year old's only friends were in their 20s!
Alright I think that's what I'm gonna say for now, I'd love it if yall tuned in for updates if your curious since this is a passion project for me and my friend and we're having a blast writing it!
As always I am still working on stuff for Ninjago cause I could never abandon my one true love, currently there's a Pixal drawing in progress (it's giving me hell T-T) something for Cole and Geo, and something of Sora MAYBE even Euphrasia if I'm feeling up to it.
Having said that I hope yall have a great day/night and PEACE OUT!

A little something about the students dress
Alright so I was looking at references (to draw a character) and ended up doing a bit of research on academic dresses & graduations uniforms! I only find a couple of things so if someone have more infos I will be very interest!
So in Bloodborne we got those dear uniforms :
The one with the robes is very classic of what people in old classic university still wear for big events and graduations such as in the U.S.A or UK. A decades/century ago they did wore those uniforms of course way more often. Now we wear mostly casual clothes.
(This image always made me think of Byrgenwerth. With the balcony and all. That remind me of a post I made a while ago I have still no clue what those balcony were use for!!!)
At first, I discovered that between a bachelor/licence degree, master degree and phd/doctorate you aren't going to get the same clothes. Plus, colours can differ depending of : the level of the degree, the school or the field you graduate in (can differ depending the countries as well).
Bachelor outfits are the most simple ones with not a lot of colours for most of them. Sometimes they don't have hoods but depends. Sometimes they seems to have very large selves like the Byrgenwerth one. The master ones have a bit more colours and I read generally long sleeves but that depends? Then the phd/doctorate ones are generally very colourful! And like the last sources below v They even had even more beautiful outfit for very important members (so I guess Willem pope outfit still make sense XD)
As for the colors it really depends the country etc but I read red is often associated with medicine and surgery (what a coincidence!). White / purple or even red is for theology and blue could be for sciences (Byrgenwerth/willem researches seems to be quite a mixt with theology/sciences so make sense).
(@katyspersonal we did talk a while back on colours on clothes meaning but hey it had have academic significations that fit well too! So in the end, drawing Laurence with white & red clothes is even more accurate now! XD) Oh I wanna draw him in an entire red academic dress now...Future drawing idea ).
Also I forgot to mentions that there's the hat/trencher that's part of it as well. It's not part of the set in the game but ennemies have it.
Also little side note: some dress have stripes or ermine bands on the clothes that represents their grades and also "academic curiosity, academic honesty, and academic courage."
So i suppose the garb Micolash, Damian & co have would look more similar to a master degree one? I guess?
But I won't throw any rocks at Fromsoftware even if the ones we got might not be too much detailed/ accurate because they sure did their homeworks to find and design those clothes. They aren't historians and they probably found a lot more things than I here (plus Japan don't have those dresses too). They're not going to design like 5 different outfits in the game too XD. (Yes I want more details for my story bc making things way more complicated is way more accurate I guess...) We don't know how exactly those types of institutions fonctions in Bloodborne universe too. And it's a fantasy world after all. So it's free real estate
I dunno if you guys @pyro-madder @karnaca78 @secteel or others could know more about it đ€
But for now it's all!
Sources :
PS : I found this piece of medieval scholar dress and it really look like the same as the guy in the cainhurst painting and cut content Beltran!
They are probably wearing a "simarre". Some magistrate/ university professor / religious clothes people would wear. So pretty oblivious and what we thought @heraldofcrow
#bloodborne#bloodborne thoughts#academic dress#university#xix century university#yeah I just wanted to draw Maria getting like her master degree and it spiralled into this. Look what I am wasting my time on.#Also I like that they still used those ideas for Raya Lucaria as well

Spidersonas are the perfect exercise and I recommend everyone try -
Quick-Spidersona Exercises
How I use new Spidersonas as Artistic Practice
[A MEDIUM length post where I share ideas and exercises to create Spidersonas quicker and easier, while practicing your writing/art]
Spidersonas can be a great tool for any artist!
If you're a writer looking for a way to get better at character creation, research, and world-building - Or an artist looking for a way to get better at character design:
Consider trying out Quick Spidersona exercises as a fun way to do that! I use them all the time, because seriously, who says you can only have ONE Spidersona?
(I think I have at least 15-20 now - counting the eight named kids I gave Miguel & Moche)
I usual end up making at least one a week - and I find they're amazing for learning how to make characters quickly and in a really fun way.
Everything can be canon in the Spider-verse, including a sentient piece of Lego-Plastic and a Pre-historic Spider-saur.
Plus, with the Spider-Society being full formed, and canon events at your choosing, you have a loose template for a background - making it easier to throw them into the story.
I use a couple different exercises on making Fast-Sonas, and I thought I'd share some.
Here's a couple of my favorites! If you find this helpful, let me know!
1 - Hour Sona Challenge
Ever have a half-baked Spidersona Idea or come up with a funny crack Spider?
Give yourself an hour (or two) and go at it.
[This challenge is good for quick practice, Character Creation & Design]
Design them a suit as quick as you can, coming up with abilities and a rough personality.
You don't need to go into backstory if you don't feel like it, and it's a great way to get started
This is something you can do routinely - I do, I usually do this once or twice a week; And soon you'll have a full cast of sonas that can interact with each other!
It's great practice, and the more you do it, the easier it gets.
When you're doing it on the fly, or know it's just one hour - it can produce characters that are more natural, because you don't have time to second guess. Plus, since it's only an hour, you can get as silly as you want!
Stoner-Spider is an example of a 2-hour Sona Challenge.
Adapt-A-Spider
This challenge is good for Character Design
Make your own cross over!
For something a bit easier - Take a Non-Spider character and make them a Spider-person.
This could be anyone, from other Marvel characters, to Disney Princesses, Celebrities, and characters from your other fandoms. You can even make some of your old OCs into Spider-people!
For Artists - this can be a real fun challenge - try and blend the characters original outfit and design into a suit suitable for swinging.
For Writers - try to adapt their current background, and shift it around so they have 'canon events'. If the character you like has lost someone, the person they lost could stand in for their Uncle Ben or Aunt May.
Example: If you're looking to adapt Ellie from The Last of Us, losing Joel could be her Uncle Ben canon event.
This works for every character (basically). What if Black Widow ACTUALLY got bit by a black widow? Now Nat Romanoff is on campus. (Every Peter thinks she's an MJ cause the red hair at first).
No matter how ridiculous, you can stretch it. In Spiderverse, everyone is Canon.
If they can write a SpiderCar - you can write ANYTHING.
Some ideas are:
Celebrities, Animals (like SpiderCat or the Dinosaur), Princesses, Greek Gods, Historical Figures, Fandom Characters,
Mundane Spider
This challenge is good for: Character Building & Design
Not everyone is extraordinary. SOMEONE has to flip those McMiguel burgers goddamn it.
If making a huge story and traumatic canon events send daunting - just... Don't do it. Challenge yourself to make a Spidersona that's literally just a person.
Like a Target employee who got bit by a spider that came out a shipment. And now they have to work at the Society AND target. They wear the Target polo over their suit.
Pick a normal type of person, and challenge yourself to make them super.
Maybe a stay at home mom that got bit by a house spider, or a college student that got bit at the library. Any one could be a Spider-person! So don't worry that they're 'boring'.
Ideas for this:
A person based on your town/city, Random Professions, Teachers, Therapists, People based on hobbies you like to do (ex: Margo is eSports. SpiderCanada is hockey based),
History Spider
[This is good for Research]
History Buffs WHERE U AT?????
If you love a period of history - GO ALL IN.
Take the SpiderNoir and Hobie route.
If your Spidersona was from Ancient Egypt, what would they wear? If you really like the Medieval Era, would their city want to burn them at the stake?
For Artists - What would they wear? And how would the fashion trends of their time period effect their suits?
For Writers - What would be their real name, if it were time period accurate? How would they act and speak? Consider how they would adjust to things like 2099, and how their time period would effect their fighting style.
Culture Spider
If you're from a interesting culture or place, make a Sona for that!
[This is another great one for Research, as well as Character Design too]
I've seen it all, from my own IncaSpider, to Korean Spider-people and Romanian Spider-people.
For Artists - It's REALLY fun adapting traditional dress and colors into a Spider-suit, and you may even find yourself falling down a research hole.
For Writers - This can go DEEP. You can pick any time period of your culture and home. Things like their accent, their behaviors and traditions, and their backstory can all be reflections of your culture.
With HUNDREDS of years is material to pull from, using Culture as a back drop for a Spider can help them seem deep and natural. Plus, you can just Google clothing and use that as suit inspo
Ben Reilly - Mary Sue Spider
Arguably my FAVORITE. Not for the faint of heart.
[This is the best for everything - Literal SELF CARE I MEAN THAT]
BE CRINGE. DO IT ON PURPOSE.
Write a character that's super strong and effortless about it. Pavi is. And he's still a great character.
Write a character who ALWAYS looks kick ass and rides a cool motorcycle or plays a rad guitar - Jess and Hobie are literally THAT.
Want your character to be big and super smart with deep trauma that haunts them? - Ben Reilly and Miguel. The three of them can be a trio.
Challenge yourself to make the COOLEST MOST FLAWLESS DRAMATIC SONA YOU CAN.
Every time you draw something or write something that makes you cringe, or feels to OP or too much.
Good. Leave it in. Turn it up to 11.
Go all out. Draw your Instagram dream outfit. If you want your Sona in 12 inch heels - have at it!
'Oh but that's impractical and stup-'
They're literally a Super-Human. If Gwen can catch a helicopter like that, I think a Spidersona can manage stripper heels or Final Fantasy Hair.
What's the worst that can happen? You're doing it on purpose.
At the best, you'll make someone REALLY REALLY rad - like Hobie.
At the least, you'll make someone REALLY REALLY funny - like Ben Reilly.
Disco-Spider Diane is an example of this. She was probably supposed to be a completely self-indulgent, unhinged Sona.
So much so that she thinks she's perfect, even though she's a little bit naive, lazy, and in her own world. But because she doesn't care.. it's all good :)
No Logic Whatsoever Spider
[This one is just funny. Great one for Character Design and getting out of your comfort zone.]
Spider-Ham, Spider-Car, Spider Cat, LegoSpider, Spiderplush and SpiderPopsicle all have a club. The No Logic Whatsoever Club.
Challenge yourself to make a new member.
Break all the laws of logic. If something can be Spiderman, then it is or duty to make it so.
What's your favorite animal? Make that.
Can they put on the suit themselves? No? Who cares they're a Spiderperson-thing now.
Is there a funny art style you like - make a Bendy's style 1930's black and white silent cartoon.
For Artists - This is a great one. It can be as simple as drawing Spider-man merch and making it sentient. Or as bizarre as drawing a Dinosaur in a Spider-man costume.
For Writers - HARD MODE. For pure crack fanatics. Enjoy trying to make logic of this. Or don't. They are what they are.
----------------------------
So here are just some exercises and ideas for those looking to strengthen their writing/art skills with Spidersonas.
They can be really quick to make, and you can always build on them over time, do a '1hr Sona Update' Challenge, run them through canon events and see them change.
Having multiple spidersonas can be fun, make writing easier, and it's great practice that translates everywhere - into world building, character design, research, and a lot of other creative skills.
Literally theres no need for just one! The Spiderverse is open to any Sona, no matter how bizarre, mundane, or self-indulgent!!
If this gave you and ideas or inspiration, let me know. If you try a challenge, I'd love to see too!
And as per usual if you've read this far: Here take this as a token of my gratitude
Go forth, create, and kill cringe with your bare hands. Smash it into a moving train. That usually does the trick.
Bye.

Early seasons of SPN are superior
so I'm re-watching Supernatural (I'm always re-watching SPN, don't mind me) and I realised why the early seasons are so freakin good whereas the laters ones are a complete mess...
Horror was the core theme of Supernatural (yes, I'm not discarding the brothers' drama, I'll get to it in a minute). These beautiful scare tactics that they employed were amazing: the crib mobile toy rotating, shadows moving out of the corner of the eyes, toys going off, subtle bloody Mary reflections in the mirror, creepy skulls dug from the ground, the ghosts flickering. Hell yea they nailed 'Scary just got sexy' with these.
Don't get me started on the background music. Whimsical music crescendo, building up the anticipation. The rock music blaring through the Impala. What happened to the cool ass music in the later seasons? They just played this weird, sad tune like someone's blowing raspberries to show grief and that's it!
Monster of the week theme and the lores/legends in early seasons were much, much better than S12's Foundry or the later season episode with bizarre tentacle porn thingy (you know which one I'm talking about). It just didn't feel the same. The stories were poorly written and even more poorly executed.
Early seasons used to be purely about Sam and Dean (as it should have been throughout) Them against the world, heaven and hell. No dumbass angel lurking in the background like a pathetic third wheel. No king of hell bitching about his sad childhood for two whole seasons. No Soccer mom half assing their way into hunting.
Foreshadowing was done so beautifully! Everytime I re-watch the early seasons I find a few bits that connects to something that happened initially in say S1-2. The parallels are done beautifully and writing is good, and I mean 'I wanna use this quote as a wallpaper' good.
The struggle for the boys was real. They had to do their own research, save their own asses, stitch their wounds, pop their dislocated shoulders back in the place. Later seasons? Bunker has answer to everything, angel healing wounds with a flash of light, Lucifer bringing Sam back from the dead without asking for anything (and no, taking him to Jack is not a good enough bargain), Jack healing wounds or whatever. Where is the damn struggle?! Where is the hero's journey?!
I miss the beautiful, colourful motel rooms that had its own personality. I HATE the bunker (yes I know a lot of people love it because Dean has a good shower, they have a home etc, etc) but no! Bunker is lame and boring and monotonous. There isn't a single thing I like about it. Gimme back my motel rooms with the sunburst mirror!
Story arc or lack thereof from S12 onwards. The main plot just got duller and duller from S12 onward and it felt like the writers got lazy and stopped putting efforts. There was no build up and the plot felt forced. The main arcs didn't feel exciting enough. BMoL and Kelly's pregnancy: the who and why? Jack: predictable. Other Micheal and Micheal Dean: meh, next! God as the big bad: interesting but I don't think they have it in them to execute this correctly.
Irrelevant/Unnecessary characters and their mini plots. S1-5 focuses purely on the brothers and that's what I'm here. I don't care how and why an idiot angel opened purgatory. It sounded more like a dull spin off plot than main story arc. I don't care about prophets and their lives (yeah Kevin is in Advance Placement, what am I to do with that?). I don't care about the different angel garrisons at war (again a plot for a lame spin off). I don't care about Crowley, his son or his relationship with Rowena. Tell me how this affects the boys. If it doesn't, please let's move on. Whatever was going on with Cole Trenton was pointless. I don't care about Mary and her hunting escapades with BMoL. I don't care about Kelly's pregnancy. The multi-universe and all characters they vomited back in the show with this. Not needed! Let Charlie, Gabriel and Bobby's memory rest in peace. Nick's killer storyline and wayward sisters. Enough said. Empty and the deal with Cas and Meg 2.0? Boring! Billy playing the bad cop, the whole death's library? Poorly executed and it turned into a bowl of cold spaghetti. In the end, the focus moved from the boys to useless characters and mini plots. Fuck that! Supernatural is about Sam and Dean and that's about it.
The direction. Later seasons lack the beauty of scenic shots of the landscape, close on up the boys' faces, the lights hitting their faces to show their beauty. Camera angles and slow panning shots. I miss the beauty that were the early seasons.
