Character Analysis of the Twisted Wonderland Dorm Rooms - Scarabia

Kalim Al-Asim

Kalim's room is notably organized, to start with. Whereas with Floyd, I theorized his room was largely his doing, due to the sporadic organization of it, I believe that Kalim's room being as organized as it is is very likely through Jamil's intervention, given what we know about their relationship.

Kalim's room is designed for company - he doesn't have a desk set up, but he does have a pillow and an ottoman set out for having people over. He also has a tea set at hand and ready for guests. Considering Kalim was raised by a wealthy family, you can see touches of it throughout the room - particularly here. Kalim likes to be a host for other people, and he likes to make them feel welcome. That being said, with how much Jamil is told to take care of Kalim, it's not hard to imagine that he also gets roped into taking care of guests - something I will go into more details about when I actually talk about Jamil's room.

Kalim has a frankly ridiculous amount of pillows, and none of them match. (I counted 15 of them.) I suspect that in large part, this is to show the eccentric nature of Kalim's personality. Having many, vibrant patters from a design perspective lends to a bright, slightly spacey personality, which fits in well with Kalim and how he presents himself.

Kalim also has quite a few books. The books in Twisted Wonderland are generally easy to identify by their shape and size - and it's important to note that this seems to be mostly a personal collection. What this tells us is that while Kalim seems to be a bit turned off of studying, he does show an interest in reading if it's something that interests him. Again, I would say most of these are probably organized by Jamil, so it's hard to say if there are any he would reach for regularly.

There are two possibilities for this box right here. Either this is a first aid kit. We know that one of Jamil's major duties is to ensure that Kalim isn't harmed under his watch, so it's possible that Jamil stuck this here. (Not to get too far into video game lore, but I can see why there wasn't a cross placed here - because of geneva conventions it gets sticky to use the symbol of a cross on an item in a video game because it is not permitted for use in a context where medical services are not being offered in a real life context. Still, this leaves some questions as to what this is.)

Or, this could be a piece of mail for Kalim, likely sent by Kalim's family. We don't get to see much of the Al-Asim family when it came to the Firelit Sky event, but this would seem to imply that Kalim's parents are doting enough to send him a care package with a little heart drawn on it.

Jamil Viper

So, like the other members of the dorms who aren't dorm leaders, Jamil shares his room with someone else, as seen by the second rug and desk to the right-hand side of the frame.

The first thing I want to point out, Jamil's room shows the hallmarks of being a room that is intended for a single person, as opposed to Kalim's. In fact, this room is a very solitary, closed-in room, with very little decoration and very little personalization. Jamil, likely, spends very little time here between tending to Kalim and doing his regular school activities. I wouldn't go so far as to describe it as prison-like, but it certainly feels stifling. That's worth examining, as not decorating a room is actually telling from a psychological standpoint - people who don't decorate tend to be more avoidant personalities than people who do. While I don't want to get too far into spoilers so far as the Japanese release goes (iykyk, otherwise you'll find out soon), but this actually tracks with Jamil - he tends to deal with his problems by not dealing with them until he can't avoid them anymore.

Jamil actually ties and hangs his shoes! I think this is a neat detail. Speaking to real life inspirations, it's very common courtesy in Muslim households to remove your shoes on entering a home, and to my knowledge it's a common practice throughout the Middle East. So, more than likely, Jamil and Kalim both likely remove their shoes at the door and walk through the dorm using slippers or barefoot. It's a thoughtful touch to include a little detail like this for Twist characters as well.

While Jamil is noted to like music and dance in canon, I think it's interesting that in his dorm room, he is one of the few people who has a boombox and headphones. In fact, it's one of the few personal touches we do see in his room. This is on his desk, so likely, he listens to music while he studies. I also believe there's a bit of symbolism here - as Jamil is likely using this as a method of shutting himself off from the people around him, as well. Generally speaking, Jamil's room paints him to be the solitary sort, and I think it's worth considering that Jamil is likely an introvert.

Jamil also has one of these boxes in his room. As I said before, this could imply one of two things:

If this is a first aid kit, and Kalim is in Jamil's room frequently enough that Jamil felt the need to put one in his room as well. If so, Jamil has not gone out of his way to make his room any more comfortable to Kalim to be in.

Alternatively, if this is a package, that means that Jamil's family or Kalim's Family also make a point to send this mail to Jamil. Since we can only guess as to the contents of the box, it's hard to say which it is. There are a few possibilities that arise from this:

1. This packaging is the standard packaging for post coming from the Scalding Sands. This is a little unlikely because of the heart on the box.

2. This is a package that whoever sent it has gone through the effort of drawing a heart on it. This indicates it's likely coming from family.

3. Because the boxes are the same and appear to have the same writing on both, it's likely if it is a package that Kalim and Jamil's families packed these care packages together and send them to both of them.

Again, because it's a bit nondescript and hard to say for certain whether this is medical supplies or if it's a package, I would say this is up to interpretation at this point! Unless we get confirmation one way or the other, let your headcanons run wild.

1) Holloway Holmes & Jack Moreno from The Adventure of Holloway Holmes (book series).

- These two have the most special place in my heart. They are the healthiest, most adorable pairing I've ever encountered and I love them like my own sons. (And they are canonically together!!!!).

- Jack Moreno is really out there casually being Holloway's #1 defender. He needs a hug too let me give it to you, baby 😭 (and this is a SPOILER but he IS a Watson. He just didn't know that).

- again, they are just ADORABLE. SICKENINGLY DOMESTIC MARRIED CRIME SOLVING BOYFRIENDS. And Jack's internal monologue is so fun to read, he's hilarious!!

2) Ty Blackthorn x Kit Herondale from TDA (book series)

- okay this is not technically a Sherlock retelling but they have the vibe!!! Ty basically fancy themselves Holmes and Watson and I'd do anything Ty told me to do.

- fella is it gay that you're waxing poetry for this boy who held a knife at your neck the first time you met? Kit doesn't care he's dying. He was too shocked at how pretty Ty is (I am NOT EVEN EXAGGERATING)

- HOWEVER they are the KING OF MISCOMMUNICATION. KIT HONEY I PROMISE YOU TY HAVE A BIG FAT CRUSH ON YOU.

- the way Kit adores Ty is peak literature. I CANNOT deal with their angst. I wouldn't survive it.

- hope they solve more crimes (and kiss!!) in the coming books. I'VE WAITED YEARS FOR THEM OKAY.

3) Sherlock Holmes x John Watson (BBC Sherlock)

- the first two seasons of them are SO ADORABLE.

- they matched each other's freaks so much. What do you MEAN John shot someone for Sherlock just a DAY after meeting him???

- I haven't watched beyond season 3 but I know what was gonna happen and maybe that's why they're kinda low.

- THEIR FANFIC IS FIRE. I LIVED OFF IT. WHENEVER AO3 WENT DOWN ITS LIKE MY LIFE SUPPORT WAS PLUGGED OFF.

4) Charlotte Holmes x Jamie Watson from A Study in Charlotte (book series)

- I ate them up when I was 14. Still crazy about them.

- their relationship is SO COMPLICATED and low-key toxic. It makes me want to tear out my hair, it makes me want to eat paper and scream and cry.

- they love each other, they truly do. As far as I remember, they're still not canon by the end because Charlotte wasn't ready (and what happened to her was heartbreaking. I understand why she isn't ready to be with Jamie but it still broke my heart) 😭😭

- Charlotte Holmes can be BBC Sherlock's daughter. They are so similar in so many ways. And they are so destructive 😭😭 AND CHARLOTTE NEED THERAPY PLEASE GIVE THIS CHILD A THERAPY.

- Jamie just... He needed a break. Give him a break, you guys. He's tired and sad. He's only 17, he doesn't know anything but he knows he loves Charlotte.

- (I can write a whole essay about their relationships and of Charlotte. I think I did at one point lmao).

- okay now that I'm writing this should be at least the top 3. I'm ranking it 2 but I'm too lazy to move it up. This book is the one that got me into the Sherlock lore in the first place, I was obsessed.

5) Enola Holmes x Louise Partridge (I don't remember the characters name sorry 😭)

- I watched this movie on my ex bestie's birthdays when I was like, 14 so in a way I have a special connection to this movie

I do not know if it was you, or another blogger that made a character analysis of Gojo that made me like the character and discover more about him through the manga.

While I never read the manga before or watched the anime, I had been exposed to it by my friends and some BNHA bloggers. Back then, I found Gojo to be overhyped (discount Kakashi) while liking the animation(?) style, bit still no interest.

BNHA and its Endeavour Redemption arc in the doing was tiring me to the point that I stopped reading it and manga altogether. For mayne six months or so, until now, at least. I randomly found your blog last week , and it got me a new hyper fixation 😃. You got me to start reading JJK (Megan cos playing also helps).

I bought Number 0 and Number 1 of the mangas. Only to remember midway in Number 0 that Walmart Kakashi will be snapped in two like a Kit Kat🥲. I saw that leak in one of the BNHA blogs, and I didn't mind it back then since I wasn't in the fandom, but Lord, now it sucks.

Anyways, all this long rant to say that I like reading your posts.

Gojo, rest in pain, I guess?

Probably was someone else, I don't write much analysis posts about Gojo. I think once or twice I did, I can't recall. Probably reblogged one though you saw!

I don't know, they're really just two different characters to me. Also... I was never really an active reader or watcher of Naruto like that (just very familiar) so when I first saw Gojo, Kakashi didn't register to me at all.

Like, I did not get similar vibes at all. And it actually annoys me that people will be like "He copied Kakashi's flow"! Kakashi ain't the only white haired, face covering character out there with magical eyes, y'all stop. 😆

Even funnier when, by this point, Gojo has probably been unmasked more than he has been wearing something on his face and switches up what he puts on his face. Kakashi been wearing the same mask for...? Also, didn't it take years for Kakashi's whole face to be shown or something? Took like seven episodes for Gojo to show that face.

I always been a fan of Megan's music and then when I found out she was into anime I was like "YYYYYEEEEEAAAAH". She cosplayed as Miruko one Halloween and it made my year. I am a former believer that Miruko would vibe to her music.

Just seeing other Black women being unapologetic fans of anime (or anything) does wonders for me and I hate it when people act as if it's such a foreign idea to understand. Honey, we can have interests, too, like everyone else. It's normal.

I always try to be careful about spoilers for anything I'm into. Like, I can talk about a chapter that happened two years ago, but I'll still mark as a spoiler because I know some people don't read Mangas or even if they do haven't caught up to that specific part.

That actually what set me off when Usher cosplayed as Gojo because he literally put "rest in peace, Gojo" or something along those lines and the amount of people who weren't even aware of 236... like bro, come on.

I knew it just had to be a marketing tactic because I know damn well Usher ain't seen JJK a day in his life and how convenient it is he comes out with that cosplay around the time when "Daddy's Home" becomes a fairly popular song used in Gojo's edits. I can't go watching one video on YouTube without hearing that song play when Gojo pops up. And even if he has... WHY WOULD YOU TAG IT LIKE THAT?!

Oh, but Megan definitely doesn't know any of the characters she be cosplaying, alright... okay... 🙄

Also kinda sad that Lucie and James couldn't use their powers anymore. (Or well ,mostly, James his gun) but I get why (and now Kit will get to have the gun in TWP, if I remember the spoilers for SoBH I've read correctly, which is pretty cool)

WE DIDN'T GET CORDELIA AND LUCIE'S PARABATAI CEREMONY??? idc if it was completely uneventful I still want it. Cassie you let me down.

On the topic of things we didn't get, here are two more: Matthew telling his family about his secret FROM HIS PERSPECTIVE (and not just a mention through Cordelia) same for Will and Tess learning about the gracelet and more specifically I would have LOVED a Will and Cordelia scene (like Will saying "thanks for taking care of my son" and ruffle her hair like he wanted to in the wedding).

Oh and also Alastair coming out to Sona with Cordelia reacting the same way Eugenia did with Thomas would have been WHOLESOME.

I'd also like to say I'd have loved a scene where James and Cordie played chess and/or woke up in the same bed but fingers crossed that will be in the Better in Black short story (the book which I feel compelled to remind I am not getting but it will hopefully be published soon enough. Hopefully.)

I was SO SCARED Alastair and Thomas wouldn't end up together, THANK GOD I was wrong.

Arianna? Yeah ok pretty cool. Can't be the least bit mad at Ari for what happened at GoTSM.

I didn't mind Cordelia killing Tatiana. There was no one else who could have done it. Grace definitely couldn't have (except if she wanted to be as dead as Christopher or Tatiana to escape) and James already killed Belial so that'd be too much for one person. AND JAMES KILLED BELIAL!! James's will was as strong as a Prince of Hell and STRONGER which WE DON'T TALK ENOUGH ABOUT (and we do occasionally talk about it)!!!!

CHRISTOPHER DIED AND WASN'T GRIEVED ENOUGH. which isn't necessarily a bad thing considering it would have broken my heart much more. ALTHOUGH, I can't remember James grieving him, and that is. Other than that we saw the impact his death had on everyone, we saw Anna grieving, Grace, Matthew thinking about him and even Cordelia shedding tears and hugging James and that is enough.

Oh also, I find that I cannot hate Grace. She helped Cordelia A LOT by telling her about what she'd done considering James' was being a stuck-up "ahmag" at the time. (Which Thomas is pretty sure means idiot in Persian and I trust him)

Also, I feel like I want more of the characters as a group, you know, banter and meetings at the devil tavern.Like, they are SUCH a nice group. Their characters are AMAZING but I feel like (other than to fight) we didn't see them interact with each other enough. (Except ,obviously, the couples)

Other than that pretty content??

No hate, I am sad I finished the book these are just things I wished we'd gotten, but one can't have everything and this gives me content for daydreaming lol

*cracks knuckles* You have fallen into my trap. Prepare to hear about the singular best character that has ever been created.

Kit Baxter, also known as the Flying Squirrel, is the sidekick to Canada's greatest superhero, the marvelous masked man known only as the Red Panda from the radio show Adventures of the Red Panda. She is also his chauffeur for his secret identity (which remains secret even to the listeners for most of the show.) One other important bit of context is that the show is set during the great depression in Toronto, Canada, so life kinda sucks ass a little bit.

Kit is a first generation Russian immigrant, her father ran a boxing ring and taught her to drive. She's quick witted and quick on her feet, can throw a mean right hook, and drives better than most other people in the city, which earned her a spot as a taxi driver. Panda ended up in her car in his Secret Identity, asked her to drive (recklessly) to a crime scene he wanted to stop, and she, obviously, refused. She wasn't going to be running around like an idiot for some rich asshole. Panda than waved some money in her face to try and get her to listen, and what did she do? She said no, because she isn't some trained dog that'll bark for some rich asshole the moment he gives her a bone. She'd rather go hungry tonight than do that kind of shit for him, and if he's gonna act like he doesn't even know what manners are, he can get the hell out of her cab. (Once he says sorry and asks nicely, than she puts the petal to the metal.)

She's also like. So smart and cool and good with people, she's a jokester and flirtatious (mostly with Panda because she likes flustering him, its really funny) but she's allowed to be all of those things without ever feeling like "Oh she's just there to be the attractive side kick." Kit is very much her own person, its just that she happens to like being a thorn in Panda's side and sometimes that means batting her eyelids (and climbing up walls in a skintight cat suit).

Kit became the Flying Squirrel after, and I quote "I figured out your secret identity and then blackmailed you into letting me play." She cares so, so deeply about the people of her city, especially the people on the streets she comes from because she did not grow up in a nice area of town, and she is constantly trying to fight for the most vulnerable parts of town, despite many of them looking down on her as a woman, especially a woman in her field. She never takes anyone's shit, either towards herself or anyone else, and she is always ready to throw hands with someone she thinks deserves it.

(I'm going to be getting into spoiler stuff underneath the cut. I am asking so very nicely for you to listen to the Adventures of the Red Panda. They're on spotify here ad free, and you can also find them on their website decoderringtheatre.com along with all of their other shows and their audiobooks. It truly is one of the most impressive, fun, and thrilling stories I have ever read, watched, or heard, and it is Criminally Underrated. If you think this is even like. A Tiny Bit Interesting, throw on the first episode, its only 20 minutes, see if you like it. If you don't mind spoilers, or ended up not liking it, keep going.)

Something that I really, really like about Kit is how she's handled later on in the story, once we get into WWII. Her and Panda get married, and she ends up pregnant right as he ends up MIA (presumed dead by most of the world) and she is left to try and defend all of Toronto largely by herself with a child on the way and Archangel, a nazi spy whose manipulating p much everything, bringing havoc upon her city.

It would be super easy to let her fade into the background during all of this. It would be so, so easy to write her off as so many different things do as a mother and a wife and leave her at that. But they don't. She steps up as the mastermind behind everything, pulling the strings of their connections they've forged over the years, continues to fight in her suit until she physically can't anymore, working as hard as she can in and out of costume to make sure that her city, because with Panda gone (not dead. She never believes he's dead for a second and has and will fight anyone who says otherwise.) It is her city and her people and she will not let it fall to ruin. She will not let anyone else, Nazi or American or Canadian or anyone take her city from her.

Katya Baxter is a wonderful character who is just so, so funny and amazing and if anybody knew what the Adventures of the Red Panda were she would be an absolute HIT of a character on here. I love her so, so much.

Thoughts on the Star spoilers? Mine are below the cut.

I mean. It looks interesting. I probably won't read it bc erm I'm a boring adult now.

On Splashtail... I'm very tired of the "villain leader immediately starves the elders and queens" trope that we see over and over and over and over.. I think Tigerstar was the only villainous leader who didn't do that. He only did murder. Splashtail to me seems like Hawkfrost + Brokenstar, but without any nostalgic benefits.

I don't like the kit-kidnapping. Just, why? Siblicide/Infanticide seems a bit out of character for Splashtail. I thought he was just some kid in over his head. But nooo, suddenly he has a blood lust. This might be weird but I wish there were less murders in warrior cats. However, Frostpaw getting to kill Splashtail was ok imo.

Speaking of her, Frostdawn is a cool name, I guess? Graysky and Mistpool are kind of boring names imo, it seems like they were trying to emulate Graypool and Willowbreeze but also not because the erins have probably forgotten who Graypool is. If I were in charge, I'd have named Graypaw Grayjay, in memory of his dad, and because it sounds funny. Idk what I'd call Mistpaw. Maybe Mistwing after her mentor, Icewing? Mistice?

Also, are Beetlepaw and Beepaw going to be apprentices forever? I feel like they should've been warriors by now, but the wikia says they're still 7 moons old? Same with Stempaw + co, they're only 6 moons? Am I finally losing it?

Then about Lizardtail and Gorseclaw trying to join ThunderClan. This was pretty cool, I suppose. The leaker didn't really give much build up to this plot point, so I'm assuming the book doesn't give any build up either. I could be wrong though. I do like this last sentence in the wikia: "Three of his kits died in their adulthood—Dappletuft by the impostor, Softpelt in battle, and Harelight by Splashtail—leaving Gorseclaw as his last remaining kin." But also?? Where did his wife go?? Lakeheart if you can hear this please come home your husband misses you.

Also, the leaker seems to confuse Mosspelt and Havenpelt, saying that Mosspelt is Splashtail's mother. Probably just the leaker's misreading, and hopefully not a canonical contradiction in the book. Same with them confusing the pronouns of Gorseclaw. (Although I'm one to talk..)

Ok and finally onto the leadership changes. Icestar is a good choice for leader. Lots of fans wanted this, so I give the Erins a polite thumbs up. But Owlnose? I don't care about him. He didn't need redemption. The only way to fix this is to have Icestar die immediately in The Elder's Quest and force Owlnose to become leader haha. Just kidding.

These are just my thoughts please don't take them as gospel holy moly I am just Some Guy. Disagree with me or don't, it's your life.

I'm on book 2 of Warriors, Fire and Ice, left off on ch. 18.

The brief moments we've gotten of Fireheart meeting his sister, Princess again and sneaking off to visit her; Sharing memories of her when they were kits and washing off her scent when he returns to Thunderclan. Thinking of how these are such happy moments for him, so much so that he feels confused and almost torn in his duties and loyalties to Thunderclan. Coupled with the resentment, bitterness and anger towards some of the cats within the clan who view him as beneath them for having been born a "kittypet."

And I just. Okay, where are my shipcest shippers at!! I haven't really been active in the fandom yet because I want to avoid spoilers (though I do more or less know what happens between them later. Lol).

And anyways, does this ship have a name? I tried looking it up, but didn't really find anything. If it does not have a ship name, how about Fireprincess? I think it sounds cute and is perfect because if I'm not mistaken Fireheart's name changes again later on to Firestar.

Anyways, Greystripe has the storyline I would have loved to see for Fireheart and Princess. LOL. I want to see the drama and more confusion of Fireheart having to be angry and defend himself seeing his sister who is a non clan member and worse for Thunderclan a "kittypet." I want more drama and angst of Fireheart having to choose where he would rather be - Thunderclan who accepted him, despite some of the cats attitudes and those he has come to care for or his sister who he just found and connected to again. Princess who is so kind and gentle and loves him for who he is. Warrior, Kittypet, it doesn't matter.

I don't know how it would work with the current storyline though - Bluestar being on her last life, Fireheart's apprentice in bad shape, Tigerclaw's shady character, Shadowclan and Riverclan's plots, Greystrip seeing a riverclan warrior. So much stuff happening. Lol.

I just want to see a fic that just focuses on that drama I mentioned regarding Fireheart and Princess. As for the actual shipcest. I'm not far enough into the series so I also don't know how the clans and kittypets would view a brother/sister relationship that is more than just sibling love. But for, sure I am all for the forbidden romance trope it could bring! Adds to the drama and angst!

It could make it even more better if imagine an au, where for his sister, Fireheart decides to leave Thunderclan no matter how grateful and how much he has come to love some of its members. I can see Bluestar respecting his wishes because she's a very wise and patient leader. Idk how Greystripe would react, guess it depends if his own love plot is still in this au. Lol.

But anyways, Fireheart decides to leave and imagine him starting his own clan made solely of kittypets. The ones he grew up with. Maybe like a best of both worlds scenarios. The kittypets can still live with and enjoy their two legs, but also have their own territory close to the two legs they guard and patrol. So they can be somewhat wild, but still have the comforts of a kittypet life. Idk how feasible this scenario would be, but I just think it's fun to think about. About Veronica, Luke's view is that he never really got to be near his mom. She was caring when she was home, but more often than not she was out at work and when she did fall sick, suddenly he got to spend a whole year with her and, while obviously taking care of someone terminally ill brought him a lot of trauma, it also made them bond like crazy, hence why he really reveres her image and misses her loads.

Jonah's POV though is that Veronica was a workaholic parent who was rarely home, better than Kit but not by much, and that she only conveniently started giving a crap about Luke once she was put in bed rest and needed a family member to take care of her. He doesn't forgive her for allowing her 17yo son to burden the sole responsibility for her well being, when that should've been on her husband.

The truth, of course, lies somewhere between these two takes.

I just finished reading your fic LB (twice!!), you're suuuch a good writer! The characters and the world building/culture and lore especially are super super amazing! Yours is probably one of the best fics I've EVER read! The best one in the Voltron tag for sure! Seriously, it's super duper awesome! I also looove that you're answering questions here!

I was actually wondering about the Galra in regards to (raising) their children...

You said before that children are really very, very important to the Galra and that they are treated very well, hence why Keith's neglect/(abuse?)/maltreatment would really shock and upset them...

I also read your posts about the Idea of disowning children and how a child (perhaps not an adult?) acting out would moreso be considered a failing on the parents part etc. ...

Considering that Lotor was (rather publicly?) banished and (perhaps not so publicly) mistreated by his 'father' (and technically his 'mother', but the Galra don't know that I suppose), how would the Galra look at that? Especially the mistreatment, I mean some of the Galra upper echelon had to have known about it, right? Do they excuse it, because Lotor is only half Galra and Zarkon is the emperor? Is it more or less a kept secret? Do only certain people dis-/approve?

Also how is a banishment like this viewed by the general public? Wouldn't it be a really big stain on Zarkon's rule/popularity? Wouldn't it carry a sentiment like 'if you can't properly take care of your own child, how will you be able to take care of an Empire'?

So you seem to have done your reading and be very much up to speed with all my posts about galra children (which is very exciting for me, I'm always glad to know that people are still enjoying my longer posts even months/years later!!), but I've linked the bulk of them above for the ease of anyone who is less familiar.

In terms of the behaviour of children reflecting upon the parents/caregivers/community, this is only the case while the child in question is still a child—and indeed the line between galra childhood and adulthood is quite a distinct one. I think of the Empire as a whole (ie. not just one cultural/religious group within it) hosting something akin to the Maasai coming-of-age ceremony, Il Mirisho, wherein the initiates are boys of the same "age set" of 9-15 years. So the galra equivalent of this is Q'tskraal, a quadrennial rite of passage for kits of at least 60idp (21.4% of the way through the average galra lifespan, the approximate human equivalent of 17y), the name of which is an amalgamation of two Zaalkh words: Q'tsaal (the tutelary deity of change, its name being synonymous with the qualities of mutability / unpredictability / progress / a demanding spirit), and Kral (from the root Kra, indicative of a physical trial of conquest). Celebrated only once every four decaphoebs, this rite is held at the end of Nydaan—the ninth of Daibazaal's ten phoebs, as, due to the galra's monestrous fertility cycle, the overwhelming majority of successful births occur throughout A’vael, with premature / overdue kitlings being born into late Hiikyl / early Nydaan respectively, meaning that as Nydaan comes to a close all but the most extreme of outliers have freshly celebrated the anniversary of their birth—in the hope that the Divine Twin L’lameih, whose benevolent eye is the emerald star of Nyd, will bless the proceedings.

Participants are presented with a trial which, if they prove themselves strong enough to overcome, denotes them as capable of sharing in the community's burdens as a contributing member rather than a dependent. So this transition is one from the role of protected to protector (a great honour!) which of course also encompasses responsibility for one's self: as an adult, no longer can they claim ignorance or foist responsibility upon their elders, as their actions are their own and therefore a reflection solely of themselves. To disown one's child who is no longer actually a child would still cause something of a stir, of course, but it wouldn't be even //remotely// taboo in the way that abandoning a kit would. Now, while zombie-Zarkon was far from a good father, by the time he exiled his son, Lotor had already succeeded in his own Q'tskraal—though not via his father's preferred method of violent subjugation, but more by way of intellect—and was therefore deemed an adult by Imperial society. Although said banishment could never avoid being a talking point, the narrative was meticulously controlled, with the official line blaming the entire thing on Lotor's "impurity of blood" and resultant "weakness of character", so naturally Emperor Zarkon had no choice but to hold his own son to the rigorous standard that he would expect of any imperial citizen.

The particulars surrounding Lotor's childhood, however,,, now those are shrouded in mystery, and believe you me, Kolivan & the BoM as a whole would indeed be o u t r a g e d .

Christmas!! Al loves it a lot. She likes making presents for people if possible, she loves decorating, she loved her grandmas' and mom's cooking. she gets so into the Spirit of it. She used to create drawings and comics for her mom/cousins all the time as gifts! She would spend the morning at church, then with her whole family for the day afterwards, and though there was a tinge of sadness bc of her dad's death, Christmases were always core memories for her. her first glove and bat, first bike, the pair of glasses she really wanted--her mom would always splurge to get her what she really wanted bc she loved her so much, and so along with the good times she also remembers her mom that way. None of the other monsters really like Christmas but they come around to make an effort bc they're helplessly endeared to Al :']

least favorite holiday is halloween bc of a Certain Traumatic Event (it's a spoiler!). it didn't always used to be bc as a child she hated the how loud fireworks were on the 4th of july and that soured it for her for a long time. she would eat her consolation hot dog under the bed covers and try and read comics with a flashlight.

10. What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)

Baseball bat for. a weapon djkjf. her bandana obv. a med kit for the other monsters (it has a lot of bandaids). a million crumpled lists in her pockets of things to remember (that she forgets). on a carabiner: rubber bands or hair ties, mostly there to be fidgeted with; swiss army knife; key to her mom's old house in georgia. no wallet. you don't really need an ID if you can get away with starting an interaction w/ 'Be not afraid'.

1. What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)

my girl Lupa loves beer. probablyyyy modelo. and presidente when she can get her hands on it. she doesn't really care how people perceive her taste. she can't drink it too much bc she went a little overboard in high school and so now she has just the perfect amount of high tolerance that makes her think Just One More Will be Fine (not only is this bad for her as a werewolf bc they have a generally lower alcohol tolerance but also she's a stupid sad drunk past her twenty minute fun stage. the thoughts don't stop running. oops!)

3. What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)

Lupa really doesn't have disposable income until her late 30s so within the story i'm telling uhhh . probably the windbreaker she wears in the third season.

OH wait i remembered. she saves up a whole summer to get herself braces as a teenager bc she was super embarrassed abt her teeth and her parents couldn't afford and also refused to help her with it. she also saves up a good amount to apply to the colleges she wants to get into. that's it's own story.

okay, muffins have been consumed, let's fucking go-

so, i should preface this by saying that i haven't seen cats (2019) yet. so mayhaps i was the one mischaracterizing mr. mistoffelees, but judging on the clips i've seen, i think i've got a pretty solid idea on what they've done to him. and oh god it isn't good-

if you've never seen any stage production of the original musical... well, go watch it. right now. like straight up, here's a link to the 1998 filmed production. trust me, it is as weird as you think it is, but it's fucking amazing in how weird it is. it makes no sense and honestly that's why i personally love it.

now, if you still don't wanna watch it, fine then. might as well fill you in myself. mr. mistoffelees is one of the characters in the musical, obviously. he's described as "the magical cat". in the musical that's taken very literally, he performs magic tricks for the cast and audience, and (SPOILERS) is the one to summon old deuteronomy after he's kidnapped by macavity. i'm assuming he's supposed to represent the type of cat that causes things to happen without you figuring out how, almost like it was magic that caused it.

mistoffelees, from what i've seen, is extremely proud of his magical abilities. he's described as incredible and mystical, and he very much flaunts those titles. sure, it's not him singing his title song (that would be rum tum tugger), but there's never a moment where he seems to disagree or try to humble himself. he's the incredible and magical mr. mistoffelees and god does he fucking know it. for all my fellow jacksepticeye fans, he's just fanon marvin but as a literal tuxedo cat.

so, how did they mischaracterize him in the 2019 film? by stripping all of his confidence away. like i said, i haven't seen the movie so i'm just going off of clips i've seen from his song. but it seems that either laurie davidson (mistoffelees' actor) or some other force decided to make the magical cat this shy and under confident character. he talks about the things he can do like he's trying to prove to the cast that he can do magic. instead of just... confidently proclaiming "yeah, i can do magic!"

this may just be a me experience, but when it came to school talent shows (at least in media), there was always a joke about the one middle schooler who did a magic act. usually this magic act would be poorly done, just simple magic kit tricks. mr. mistoffelees in the 2019 film feels like that kid, but he's very much aware that he's the magic act. he knows he's just walked on stage in a goofy magician outfit with his magic kit and he's about to get laughed at. and that's not mr. mistoffelees. i don't think i need to repeat how mistoffelees is supposed to be, i've already said it multiple times.

i don't even really care that they had him sing his own song. sure, it takes away the entire point of the jellicle cats singing about each other (they're a community that loves and respects each other), but whatever. honestly, it makes a little sense that the cat that's so confident about himself sing... well, about himself. but you can't then completely reverse who he is as a character.

and this isn't the only mischaracterization we see. victoria is changed from some one off cat to the star of the show (and they by extension mischaracterized jemima by giving her relevance to victoria but that's probably a different post altogether). grizabella is shown to shy away from touch even though the whole point of her character was that she wanted to be touched by a jellicle cat, thus meaning she was accepted into the group again. bustopher jones is shown as a slob who eats out of the garbage even though he's supposed to be an aristocrat cat (an aristocat if you will) that's fed extremely well. and i can't put my finger on it but there's just something about jennyanydots in the film that just doesn't feel right.

all in all tom hooper, the director of this movie, just... did not understand anything about this production. he didn't understand the music (but if you've seen the movie adaptation of the musical adaptation of les misérables then you'd already know that), he doesn't understand the story. and he, quite probably, didn't understand the characters. cuz my god how did you fuck most of them up?

Stuck on prompt 5 for (a very late and overdue) khoc week; not because I don't know what to do, but because there's so many things I want to do.

Also some sliiight spoilers for themes (couldn't help myself) with my fic, but it helps explain why I'm struggling to get something out for this specifically.

Each of my main OCs is an embodiment of the complexities of experiences that can't be defined by light or darkness, especially Zorya who literally is a being of darkness that is trying a third way of handling it; not controlling to destroy it (Xehanort and Eraqus' ideals, or rather the "teachings of light") or even embracing it and accepting it (first step that Riku found), but believing in it; seeing your flaws as a wound to heal, a possibility to be realised, just like how you love people and believe in them, she wants to believe in herself and love herself in ways she hasn't been able to. To kit hate your flaws or see them as something to be "fixed" but loved and cared for. I think Kingdom Hearts is leaning into that in the next arc, but it's not quite there yet.

Meanwhile the other two are also examples of this but in different ways. Yoru is more like Riku and delves into that "first step", but like Riku he still hates and fears his own flaws. He hasn't really fully embraced the fact he's just a person and is allowed to have those flaws yet, same as Riku (which is partly why I'm excited for the aspect of him being in Quadratum since I think both he and Sora will realise that while fighting the personification of that fear and hate towards darkness). Yoru still thinks that he's a bad person for being too curious, too scared, too angry, too this or that. But he also wants to embrace it and change. Which is all great and all when it comes to wanting to be a better person, but he's still healing. And pushing a wound that's still open won't heal it, it'll just worsen it. I want to show that, but it can't really be summed up with just light or darkness; it's both.

And Taiyo is probably the most interesting of all when it comes to the question. He believes he's strictly light, he wants to uphold his teachings and be what he was taught to be. He's exactly like Eraqus and any other Keyblade Master before that, but the thing is he doesn't have a Keyblade and he is forced to realise how human he is. He's a lot like Aqua in that regard, forced to face his limits and understand his own humanity and inadequacy when compared to the perfectionism pushed by his teachers and peers. He has to unlearn all of the toxicity and realise a heart is more than just a means of good or evil, it's also an identity; a means of love and happiness, it's also about caring for oneself as a person, not a tool. So he would say light absolutely, but like every other person, he has his flaws. Even if he himself doesn't acknowledge them.

I want to explain this all in a way that isn't just a long monologue, but by instead showing it. Yet, I also don't want to spoil the full character arcs I have planned in my fic itself or its story and every single theme in it.

Also, darkness and light are treated very delicately in my fic and with my OCs, so I tend to put a lot of thought in whenever I want to show their connections to light or darkness, because it's always very much related to mental health and self discovery and self care. It's about realising that light and darkness are subjective; mailable and unclear. But with that, there's so many ways to show it. I get so excited by that too, which in turn has me writing various drafts and having so many different ideas that it's hard to settle on just one to go with.

TLDR: This will probably be the longest and most thoughtfully written out of all the prompts. The reason I stopped with the last one is because I'm so excited to really make something that makes fans of the series think about what light and darkness really are in regards to this universe. I know it's just a little fun prompt and I don't have to. But I want to. It's fascinating and I think it's a great way to introduce people to the themes of my fic and the ideas these characters all embody.

not the biggest fan of how they ended up combining the two series together, the crows definitely deserve much more than this, and also I kind of hate how they're just pulling things out of both six of crows and crooked kingdom randomly with no regard for how the scenes reflected the characters' arcs

kaz and jordie though? TRAUMATIZING

idk why they included jesper's mom in there either, it was fun seeing him using his powers but the books do SO much better at realistically handling him overcoming his feelings of guilt and fear over an extended period of time with support from people he loves, rather than him suddenly gaining clarity because of a poison trip hallucination

also the last ep handled everything weirdly imo, like inej already hunting down slavers when that makes no sense for what her arc was in the books, and right after the "how will you have me" scene too (still iconic though)

wesper should've gotten their slowburn, but I will still happily replay their scenes until I feel something because I'm still a sucker for wesper being couply even if their relationship was super rushed

thank god for kit and jack doing the "just girls" scene during promo because the show's effectively eliminated any chance of that <3

also can we stop with the whole pulling shit out of our asses that have nothing to do with adapting the books faithfully and don't even contribute to the plot of the show thank you

I also loved alina's interactions with the crew and basically anyone who wasn't mal or the darkling, she's thriving this season and I'm glad she's becoming her own person

nikolai was so well portrayed, really hope he gets his king of scars arc and we get to see more of him, but I think they should've kept in the bit where he was basically a volcra for a while (probabaly got cut because of budget or smth but it added so much to his character)

why would they kill off david (I'm half-holding onto the show/movie logic of not seeing the body yet but STILL) it's way too early in the overall plot of the book series, and I can't enjoy the show when they pull things from different points in the timeline without any reasoning behind it, it's just lazy and stupid. also genya did not deserve this much suffering in one season istfg

I skipped most of the darkling's scenes because that man pisses me off so much, but ben barnes did a good job at adding depth to him after baghra's death

Thank you for agreeing about Grace and Kit not being a good ship, it seems that so many girls in this fandom love on her loudly and uwu mostly for her aesthetic, while not even caring about what she’s done to men and James himself, Tatiana or not… I hope we don’t see Grace even consider Kit..as if he’d kiss or date his cousins ex. If Kit even shows reciprocal feelings I know it’ll make me hate his character and I’m sorry to say it. i have to admit, strictly aesthetic-speaking, i do like Grace's aesthetic vibe with the grayscale and the creepy and the like. BUT, i can't overlook the things she's done either.

i do recognize that a lot of it was Tatiana's doing, though, and i do have to give the slightest bit of repreive there. Grace is 16 though and does bear enough responsibility to recognize the things she did were wrong and must atone for them. but much of the blame should still rest on Tatiana in this manner in the way that i think their punishments shouldn't necessarily be equal

i've grown to hope that grace's life does get better at some point but not with kit :P
