Art and snippet of Matthew's Kickstarter novella "A Sea Change" from Cassie's lattest newsletter!
Tumblr media
It was a beautiful night.
The promenade deck wended its way around the entirely of the Majestic like a necklace of polished wood and brass fittings. There were few out walking like Matthew, perhaps because it was cool and windy, but Shadowhunters were used to the cold. Besides, the wind blew the clouds away, exposing a sky so full of stars it looked as if a jeweler had hastily stuffed a drawer with handfuls of loose-cut diamonds.
A year ago, Matthew would not have been able to enjoy the path the moonlight made across the water, or the sky afire with white flame. He would have been thinking about his last drink, or where he would find his next one. A frantic circle of pain and shame and longing: one he’d had to trudge invisibly, keeping his secrets from his friends, his family.
Now the weight was off him. He felt light, and sometimes strangely at rest, like a windmill on a windless night. He no longer despised himself, but he did not know his purpose, either. If, he mused, one had to have a purpose at all. Was it not enough to be a Shadowhunter — one among many, but each sworn to protect humanity against demons? To keep peace among mundanes and Downworlders — warlocks, werewolves, the Fair Folk, and vampires?
A year ago, he wasn’t sure he would have so quickly identified Miss Gwendolyn as a vampire, either. But then Matthew spent more time with Downworlders than most Shadowhunters did. Some he was friendly with, but he did not trick himself into thinking that meant they were not dangerous. And a vampire hiding out among humans was cause for concern.
He’d noted the way Gwendolyn hadn’t eaten, and had drunk sparingly of the wine. The translucence of her fingernails. Her pallor, even under a layer of makeup. The veins at her temples — if those were visible, she was hungry. And there had been the odd behavior of Orville Cole. The way he’d stared at her worshipfully. Humans often fell under the spell of vampires, finding them impossible to resist. It was not the same as a thrall relationship, where the vampire fed from the human and in return promised them eternal life, but it was a use of vampire glamour forbidden by the Accords.
Though Gwendolyn had seemed, if anything, annoyed at Cole’s attentions. Perhaps she’d enchanted him without meaning to and wished nothing more than to be rid of him. It was hard to say; Matthew did not get the sense she’d been a vampire very long.
At that moment, lost in thought, Matthew collided with something solid.
“Pardonnez-moi — oh. It’s you.” The young man from dinner, Sylvain Allard, had evolved out of the shadows of the night. He wore a dark summer suit which blended with the night.

Also let’s talk about this line for a second: “Everything you and your friends have done — why would you leave after working so hard to make your world safe?”
Because how perfectly put but how heartbreaking too. When everything (and almost everyone) was settling down, when they were all ready to stop and rest, Matthew wasn’t—because his story was arguably the furthest from being over, because it was only beginning. And how to express that in words — that messy, painful romantic tangle with Cordelia (and James) and how painful it must’ve been to see them so often, despite them all being friends (maybe even harder because of that). After all the battles they fought, everything was finally settling, but Matthew was leaving.
I see him as such a remarkable character for it, and appreciate it a lot. Because while it’s nice and lovely to see characters having wrapped up storylines, life isn’t always so simple as that! Sometimes you need to leave a place that’s hurt you to figure out who you really are. So much love for this character.

Honestly, the guy we've gotten from the "a sea change" snippets doesn't strike me as a Shadowhunter. I don't know why, maybe it's just because his name isn't Jonathan.

Any hopes for Matthew’s love interest in A sea change (or whatevs his short story is called).
I honestly think his love interest may be a downworlder (think fae or werewolf in particular). Butttt if it is a Shadowhunter, I hope it’s one from a family we’ve already seen in modern times but not past times. Like imagine a Fairchild with a Rosales :,0 or like- Pedroso, to tie into Thais !!!! It would be so fun
OOOOO!!!! i actually hope it's a downworlder! a faerie or vampire i think would be super cool! i'm kinda wanting them to be a downworlder bc we haven't really had many downworlder love interests in tsc recently (ik that james and lucie have tessa's warlock blood but it's not quite the same). so, it would be extra cute to see matthew being the one to break the cycle. shadowhunter/downworlder relationships are always v interesting because they're really different from only shadowhunter x shadowhunter ships! but if he does end up with a shadowhunter, obviously it wouldn't bother me at all! they will still be adorable i bet! and i totally agree that if he got with a rosales or pedroso ending up w/ matthew it would be SO cool :]
but truly, i just hope my boy is happy with whoever he chooses, be that shadowhunter or downworlder, boy or girl <3

So two names, more even but anyway, were mentioned: Miss Gwendolyn and Sylvain Allard.
I already see that people sense one of them might become Matthew's final love interest. If it's true then in both cases Clary can't be his descendant since Gwen is a vampire and other one is obviously the guy. What do you think of this?👀
Tumblr media
My opinion: i think they're just NPC that appear in the beginning but also i believe that Matthew might meet his "one and only" on a ship. I mean "A SeA cHanGe".... Get it? Yeah.
If one of them is his true love then Charles becomes father at some point which means that... He has to get married to a woman which is actually kinda tragic considering everything he went through... And for what? To end up with a woman?
There's also a chance that one of Charlotte X Henry's girls keeps her surname. It's unlikely though, since Charlotte did it because she became Consul. Then her daughter must also become one. That'll be fine~
I believe that I'll be happy with any character any gender as long as the character is well written and Matthew is happy. But i did hope that he and Clary are connected.
