…Now, for fic recommendations.

One fic I will never not take the chance to recommend is i won’t say heart, but by victortor.

It’s a very long AU oneshot, and it’s crafted so well — both in terms of macro things like plot, structure, pacing and the flow of information, and in terms of smaller things like imagery, word choice and patterns between lines — just thinking about it makes me amazed, and if I’m honest it’s probably one of my favourite works of fiction for any fandom. And the characterisation is on point, too!

I’ve recommend this on here before, but for everyone who hasn’t read it — it’s well worth your time.

Another one that’s written beautifully is fish and wild geese byimpossibletruths:

Another very long oneshot AU, this time of a world a lot more grounded than the previous one. But it’s not focused on worldbuilding, and it makes up for that with everything else — the writing style, for example, is extremely poetic and evocative, and the characterisation is also done really well.

The second fic is also a good transition point from where the main appeal to me is the more writing- and craftedness-aspect, to where the main appeal is the characterisation. If the first one had very good characterisation but that served more as a reason not to turn away (since I was drawn to it for other aspects), the rest have very good writing but the focus is mainly on who the characters are and how they think.

The Price of a Golden Core by AshayaTReldai is a very good one focusing on the whole Golden Core debate (which… I’m still confused as to why it is a debate), which is very well done.

…It will always be a little funny (and impressive) because of how well it manages to capture fandom attitudes on the topic — you can read it as two people on here debating and it would fit perfectly. But the characterisation of everyone is very accurate, it explores consequences very well, and is just a very good fic.

Worth of a Good Man by Vrishchika is a very good one focusing appreciating (canon!) Wei Wuxian — there aren’t any self-worth or self-esteem issues, just him. It’s written very well too, and like I said, the characterisation shines:

so i hold you close by PrismaticAvocado is also a very sweet fic exploring the relation between Wei Wuxian and Jin Ling, if you want something more focused on the Juniors or one of them (who I love but I haven’t come across a standout fic about them yet, though it does probably exist).

Finally, if you’re looking still for good characterisation (and good fics in general too, but characterisation is especially hard to find in the MDZS fandom), I recommend reading fics by other meta writers on here who are also on AO3. @ladypfenix (Admiranda there), @righteousinadversity and @rynne are people I know write on there, but they’re not the only ones, just the people whose works I’ve interacted with the most. So they’re very safe bets!

He thinks Jiang Cheng takes home the underclothes and sleeps in them, cuddling the knockoff Zidian like a teddy bear.

Wei Ying lands a job as the Yiling Patriarch at the Lanling Cultivation Museum. Lan Zhan (Hanguang-Jun 4x per week, Sect Leader Lan 2x per week) suffers accordingly.

8. Why did you join the fandom?? (Banana fish)

I joined because of Ash. Ok, seriously though it was actually because of Yuri on Ice. I watched Yuri on Ice weekly, back when there was only one episode out, so I was kinda obsessed afterwards! If I saw anything affiliated with Kubo, Yamamoto, or MAPPA, I would be intrigued to at least check it out. Which is what happened when I saw a tumblr post talking about Studio MAPPA’s newest work called Banana fish. I was like “That’s all I need to hear” and went to go watch the 3 episodes that were out. I got hooked immediately 😂. It took me like two scenes into episode 1 to become captain of the Ash Lynx defense squad

8. Why did you join the fandom?? (Scum Villain)

I started watching svsss back in 2020 because it’s mxtx! Saw it on the front page of the tencent app and thought I should watch it. It was also because the idea of shen yuan/shen qingqiu as a character was just immediately entertaining to me. Dying from a fit of anger over a book? Literally me 🤣. After mdzs, I think it was only natural that I would look into svsss. I think to better answer the question I should answer why I joined the mxtx fandom 😊

Funnily enough, it was because of Banana Fish and the MDZS fandom on twitter. I never read the BF manga. And I avoided a lot of spoilers while I watched the anime. But even still, somewhere around the halfway point, Ash talked about Hemingway’s The Snows of Kilimanjaro and I just knew… I KNEW… how this story would end. The parallels were so clear to me. That didn’t stop me from hoping that I was wrong until Episode 24 was released and yeah… That ending ruined me. I don’t regret watching it! But, perhaps watching that show once a week for half a year may not have been the best decision (think I could fill a swimming pool with all of my banana fish tears). Afterwards, I went to twitter to see what the rest of the fans were saying and I saw some posts like “if you were upset with the banana fish ending, go check out mo dao zu shi! the main character dies but comes back to life in the first chapter and he gets a happy ending with his husband and their son” and I was like sign me up!!! I had no idea what donghuas or manhuas or even C-Dramas were, but that all changed after watching the first season of the mdzs donghua. To say I was “hooked” would be an understatement! MXTX writes such fascinating stories! So much of my favorite tropes all in one book. Scum Villain has become so incredibly dear to me! I absolutely adore the characters and the story 🥰

9. What is your favorite fanfic for the fandom? (Banana Fish & SVSSS)

Well I’ve got a LOT I could pick from! There’s so many good ones! But if I had to narrow it down to only one, I would go with Water on Water’s the Way by ADreamingSongbird for Banana Fish. It’s my #1 💖. All I Ever Learned of Love by the same author is a close #2.

For SVSSS, there’s also so many good ones!! There’s like 15 of them that belong in the category of BEST! But if I had to lose all of my bookmarks and were only allowed to keep one… it would be Honesty is Such a Lonely Word by Chrysaliseater. I love that fic so much 🥺❤️. But Honorable Mentions go out to Sweet Tongues, Sharp Teeth, To Stem the Coming Tide, and Linger Till Dawn also by Chrysaliseater. I’ll also have to include Those Hands Pulled Me From The Earth by Sarahyyy, By Omission by Yuu_chi, High Mountain, How I Long by Minimalistless, System Restore by Straightforwardly, We Never Dreamed These Walls by Straightforwardly, Parenting Shenanigans by Jayfeather63 and ok I have to stop now or else I’ll never shut up

I like...don’t...actually....have words for this LMAO but basically I love, love, love Xie Lian getting to be hurt and hurting and Hua Cheng finding different ways to comfort and help him and actually talking about things (like Xie Lian accidentally hurting Hua Cheng’s feelings and them actually TALKING ABOUT IT) and just hnnnn yeah. this is like my go-to fic haha but I heartily rec all of etymologyplayground’s fics for tgcf (also many mdzs/cql fics but i am apparently behind in reading those orz)

Summary:

Hua Cheng puts a finger to his temple thoughtfully. He asks, "Who wants to tell me what the deal is with all these damn petals?"

The communication array goes completely silent, a feat almost in itself. Hua Cheng muses silently that gods can, apparently, shut the fuck up—they just choose not to. How convenient.

It takes a moment before Ling Wen manages to speak up. "Your Highness," she says carefully, "what did you say just now?"

"These white petals? There's got to be a hundred of them. The man just—oh yeah, there was a man—exploded into them. What's up with that?"

There's a long stretch of silence where it feels like all of Heaven is holding its breath.

Finally, Ling Wen responds. Her voice is clipped as she asks, "What do you know about the Four Calamities? Specifically, White Flower Mourns Massacre?"

Alternatively: the one where Hua Cheng is a martial god, Xie Lian is a calamity, and nobody is at all what they seem.

AAAAAAHHHHH. GOD. THIS FIC. it would be embarrassing to admit how many times I’ve reread it (also I don’t know. late night decisions are not meant to be recorded in the ledger of memory) but it’s so fucking good. Hiya!

Although I've got wangxian on my mind 24/7, I'm not the best person to go to for recs, bc I don't actually read much fanfic these days (year) and if I do, it's always something under 10k. I've got a list of books on my TBR that's as long as my arm, so books it is for now. I'm also someone who loves AUs in mdzs fic, so some of the things I loved in wangxian aren't set in canon :/

I do have a few things, though. First of, here's my AO3 Bookmarks. It's like my perennial rec list. Have a shufti, there might be something there you'll enjoy. Now as to a couple of things I read recently and liked:

My new author crush is TheDameJudiWench but I think they mostly write AUs. This one isn't: just as the stories say.

and you might have heard of this one as it's one of the most popular fics in the fandom: The Absolutely True Story of the Yiling Patriarch: A Manifesto in Many Parts by aubreyli. It's a bit cracky but very meta and tons of fun.

I'm going to tag @o0o-chibaken-o0o, though, who has read half the wangxian fics on AO3 and who's an old hand at reccing. She used to be one of the most prominent reccers in drarry a few years ago. I've been going through Chibaken's bookmarks myself when I look for recs. Perhaps she might have some good suggestions.

That discussion about being neutral about JC was really interesting to me.

I had the unfortunate luck that the first time I went on AO3 for this fandom, the first page was FILLED with extremely pro-JC fics. I didn't really care until I started reading the summaries. And I found a fic where WWX cheats on LWJ and JC is asked to teach WWX a lesson about how to appreciate people and how to behave and be less shameless. Honestly there were just so many things wrong with this entire set-up, but of all things, to even think that WWX would cheat on anyone; like the guy who hated injustice so much that he fought the entire world and died for it would do something like this. And this was set in the canon universe. It's just so bad in so many ways that I still get mad about it. I just clicked out of AO3 and now I only read MDZS fics through other people's bookmarks who I know.

On the other hand, through one of these bookmarks, I found perhaps my favourite MDZS time-travel fic where JC goes back in time. He's the main character and it's such a good fic with such good characterization and I loved that JC. And I found other really good fics as well! which actually made me feel a bit more fond of the character. I mean canon JC still has Bad Vibes but he still is a very fascinating character with so much depth to explore and any fic where he can get out of the pit of Madam Yu earlier, always leads to better results.

I think a lot depends on how people approached the fandom. I legitimately prefer reading over watching (takes less time to read a book or go through manga than to watch a series. I am impatient like that)

So, I read the novel first, which sort of framed my opinion on the characters. JC is a character trope I dislike (angry character that takes his temper out on people needlessly). There's only one exception for me and that character is from another fandom.

As far as JC's character depth is concerned - every character has that potential. You can take the blandest self-insert and turn it into something interesting through fanfic. It is great that some people explore JC's potential in fanfic.

The trick is - how do you make JC an interesting and admirable character without copy-pasting WWX's traits onto him? Does he have WWX's sense of justice? Awareness of human behaviour? Ability to read a situation? His courage to rebel against injustice?

No.

Can he still be a good character? Yes. A lot of great JC fics eventually start to feel like 'wait, this is what WWX would do - not JC.'

That is where I click away. Because you're turning away from a genuine exploration of character to what CQL did to WWX. Just making him an angry version of WWX is a cop out and I will die on that hill.

In canon, I believe he is a very flat character. JC is just... bland. He is just a foil. Foils done correctly will develop into their own fascinating characters. But with JC, we don't get a redemption arc, we don't see him improving in character, he essentially remains a foil until the very end.

So, I just prefer not reading about him.

oKAY YIKES there are....honestly too many too name. I’ve got a short and obsessive attention span so it’s either all or nothing with me usually. When I can stay in a fandom for a long period of time it’s a miracle. I’ll name the bigger ones that I’ve all written fic for! Even if I’ve never posted them haha

Right now I’m very firmly into Daomu Biji (dmbj). It feels like it’s both got a crap ton of content and yet barely anything at all haha. Maybe because the English fandom is so small. But at least there are a bunch of dramas and books!!! I really, really, really adore dmbj so much!! And a large part of that is the fandom!!! It's been a really cool and unique experience! Everyone in it is truly so kind and wonderful, and I’ve made some really incredible friends because of it (looking at you vish!! ❤). I’ve got a bunch of wips, but I’ve only posted two fics for dmbj!

Before this I was very into Guardian and mdzs. MDZS was my first foray into cdramas and Guardian’s Zhu Yilong really suckered me into watching more haha I also have fics for both these fandoms!

My very first fandoms were Fullmetal Alchemist, D. Gray-Man and Naruto. My very old ffnet account has fics for these and I’ve got a bunch of newer wips on my tablet. Then Star Trek, Twilight, BBC Merlin, Sherlock, Death Note, Harry Potter, How to Train Your Dragon, Battlestar Galactica, Avatar the Last Airbender and Marvel were a few of my main ones in high school. Plus a bunch of anime (like Fruits Basket! and Kuroshitsuji and Natsume Yuujinchou).

Then college hit and I renewed my childhood love of Tolkien (mainly lotr and the Hobbit), and Star Wars. I also found Teen Wolf! Then after college it was Stranger Things.

I find myself in a cycle of mild fondness and complete obsession with these fandoms haha I go back to Star Wars at least once a year!! Then I’m in the gffa hole for a few months. Marvel also reoccurs, depending on how interested I am in new content! Star Trek I always always always go back to. TOS is my comfort show and it will never fade from my heart ❤

But for now I’m stuck in cdrama hell and I love it

Fic I spent most time on:

My series he leaves sand and stardust in my wake (main fic is hurricane on the edge of oblivion), I have...spent five years on now. I have done so much research for this fic it’s insane.

The premise is force ghost!Obi-Wan getting shunted back into his tiny 10 year old self. I incorporate a shit ton of legends and I try to stay as canon as possible. I basically want this au to feel like it’s 1000% plausible while still getting all my gay shit. It’s chock full of whump, redemption, found family, minor characters turning into major characters, and I’ve got slavery uprising on the mind, too. It’s just- everything I could ever want to explore in the Star Wars universe basically.

It’s my first big project. I started doodling and scribbling ideas in the margins of my notebook in my Scottish History class. I adore it so so so much. But, because of my hyperfixation and fleeting intense obsession with things it makes it- really difficult to consistently update. I leave it for months at a time and I am constantly guilt-ridden about it. Because it’s my baby and I have a lot of wonderful readers. I fear I’ll never be able to finish it. Especially since I’ve written so much and I’m still only in the beginning of it. ( ; A ; )

Also, I’ve spent so much time with Xanatos, Feemor and Bruck that they just feel like mine now. I can’t read any fics that involve them, it’s too strange. Which is a damn shame because I love them so much haha OH ALSO!! I think it’s the first really big fic to include those three?? So I’m very proud about that haha (I’ve had so many ppl comment about how they actually Give A Shit about these three and are Invested bc of me haha)

hurricane on the edge of oblivion (with nowhere to go) (Star Wars)

My long-term passion project. My love-letter to Star Wars, I suppose. Reading it now I feel like a lot of it is clunky or long-winded, but I think it really shows the foundation of my writing today :) Main characters are Obi-Wan, Xanatos Du Crion, Qui-Gon Jinn, Bruck Chun and Feemor. Eventually we’ll get to Maul, Savage, Feral, Shmi Skywalker, (more!) Ahsoka, Anakin and a shit ton of clones ❤

things we hunger for (Guardian)

My Ye Zun self-indulgent fic. It’s a time travel amnesia Weilanzun! Honestly has some of my fav writing I’ve ever done. It’s so soft and really indulges in the hurt/comfort. It gives Ye Zun the friends and family I think he deserves. Also, he gets to grow into a (mostly!) functional person and I adore him.

the beast that slumbers within your soul (mdzs)

Jiang Cheng centric fic!! I feel like all my favourite fics I’ve written are love letters haha. This is one def my love letter to Jiang Cheng. This fic possessed me for two whole days. I wrote 16k in almost one sitting. I went to sleep at 6 in the morning bc I couldn’t stop writing. And when I drifted off I kept thinking of new ideas so I’d whip out my phone and write down lines and notes. I- have never ever ever felt that way about anything. It was- insane. It felt insane. It was so amazing. I’m still riding the memory of that high.

Basically Jiang Cheng actually finds Baoshan Sanren and it turns out she’s a fox demon and Jiang Cheng is descended from wolves. It’s- okay I said the fic above this had my favourite writing?? That was a lie. This has my favourite writing I’ve ever done. It’s unfinished bc I am in dmbj hell but I am still excited about the next chapter which features Wei Wuxian’s pov!!

the whispers of spirits (dmbj)

My current passion project. In a way it kinda feels similar to hurricane? Bc multiple povs, incorporating different aspects of canon (we’ll get there!! I promise!), shit ton of research, etc. etc. I really really really love it for so many reasons. I’m basically taking all the things I was unsatisfied with in Reboot and Sha Hai and running with it. Found family and whump galore! It’s also a love letter to the women of dmbj who really deserve so so so much better.

This fic also kinda possessed me. I just- couldn’t get rid of the idea of a trans!Thor. And I mean a mtf Thor! It’s just? So many people look at Thor and go “that’s a Real Man.” Full stop. They never think there could be anything more, and it really really really bothered me. So I wrote out my feelings. I’m not trans. I don’t have that experience at all. I’ve had issues and confusion about my gender but nothing like this. I just wanted to do justice to this idea of Thor in my head. And I still feel a bit nervous having posted it. But I've gotten so many comments from people who really connected with what I’ve written? So I’m very very thankful I wrote it and it has a very special place in my heart. It’s a very cathartic fic.

Fic I spent least time on:

Probably we rise (Star Wars) and I think it shows haha. I wrote it in response to Dave Filoni posting a drawing of Ahsoka and Gandalf telling her “People thought I was dead, too, and look how that turned out...” So I incorporated Ahsoka (and Din and Grogu and Ezra!!!) into the ending of Rise of Skywalker, kinda explaining how I think they could all still be alive. :)

Longest fic:

hurricane is my longest fic (159k) but I’m kinda worried whispers will eclipse that.....

Shortest fic:

Of my posted ones it’s The Five Moments it Took Tony and Scott to Admit They Were Best Friends (and the first time they ever did), currently clocks at 1.6k. It’s unfinished tho so maybe that doesn’t count.... otherwise it’s we rise which is completed and 2k.

If I had energy I’d like to rewrite the beginning of hurricane bc it feels so so wordy. I’d want to expand on One Day bc I really would like to write a whole series with trans!Thor. And like- I’d really like the focus to finish any of my WIPs.

Share a bit of a WIP: I really wanna share my Guardian/dmbj crossover that I started back in August. Bc I adore the idea of wu xie&shen wei&ye zun triplets! Plus time travel!!! I dunno if I’ll ever finish it tho ( ; A ; ) It just feels like a lot to deal with right now.

This scene takes place during the Mountain Awl arc. Guardian crew and desperado fam run across each other at the village! Wu Xie has recently found out that he’s adopted and he’s searching for answers in the area Sanshu originally found amnesiac!toddler!Wu Xie in :) Gonna pull two snippets bc I’m v excited and this might be the only time anyone else sees this fic haha:

“Oh?” Pangzi focuses on Yunlan now, lips twisting. “You think I’ve ‘got the wrong guy,’ huh?” He laughs, but it’s not a nice sound. “That’s rich! Are you that cocky or are you just stupid?”

Bristling, Yunlan drops his hands and scowls. “Excuse me?”

“Sir,” Shen Wei tries. “I think—”

Pangzi’s eyes snap back to Shen Wei, sharp and blazing. “How dare you fucking steal his face!”

What?

Automatically, Zhao Yunlan turns to Shen Wei, but the professor looks just as shell-shocked as Zhao Yunlan feels which- is seriously something. Since everything about Shen Wei is so carefully controlled, kept to the minimum. Except for those delightful little smiles that bloom across his lovely face, or the startled little bursts of laughter that fall from his lips. Or even when anger and frustration spark across his features, cracking his calm veneer open enough that he can see a glimmer of what lies beneath, the fire in those eyes. Zhao Yunlan delights in those moments, makes a game of making Shen Wei’s control slip.

He tells himself it’s nothing more than a game. Nothing more than trying to find out what makes Shen Wei tick.

Zhao Yunlan’s always been very bad at lying to himself. Or very good. Depending on who you’re asking.

“What the hell are you talking about?” Yunlan splutters.

But before anyone can say anything else, a very familiar voice calls:

“Pangzi? What’s wrong?”

Yunlan can feel Shen Wei stiffen, and Yunlan himself is pulled to that voice like a planet in orbit, like the inevitable plummet to the ground.

Another shadow wavers in the doorway before it steps out onto the dirt. Light illuminates shaggy hair, limning it gold, sharply casting everything else in shadow. But as the figure nears, the contrast softens until Yunlan can see the newcomer’s face properly and- and—

“Wu Xie!” Pangzi growls. “We’ve got ourselves an impostor!”

The man wearing Shen Wei’s face steps up to them, brows furrowed and mouth pulled down into a sharp frown. He glances between them, eyes landing on Shen Wei. His scowl deepens. He opens his mouth, but then—

“Wu Xie?” Shen Wei breathes, all trembly and lost and hopeless.

Heart in his throat, Yunlan turns to Shen Wei again. Turns and flinches at that stricken look upon Shen Wei’s pale pinched face.

“A-Xie?” Shen Wei chokes. “Didi?”

and

Pangzi snorts. “Professor?”

“I-it’s true!”

Startled Yunlan swings his attention over to Jiajia who clenches her backpack to her chest, face screwed up in admirable determination. “P-professor Shen took me and Xiao Quan on a field trip to investigate an archeological site around here!”

“Oh?” Wu Xie drawls all slow and amused. “Well, what a coincidence. We’re archeologists, too.”

“With guns?” Yunlan bites out.

Wu Xie raises a brow, grin full of teeth. “Well, you can never be too prepared.”

“Right,” Yunlan drawls right back. “Are you a professor, too, then? You come here with your students?”

Wu Xie outright grins. “You could say that, I suppose.”

Out of the corner of his eye, one of the men rolls his eyes. He’s the one with sharp features, glasses and looped earbuds. Does he think it’s appropriate to listen to music at a time like this? Yunlan admires the man’s gall.

favorite story you’ve written so far

How can anyone answer this? Lol. I do enjoy my Symbrock fics because I like writing vaguely humorous works (though I’d probably edit the heck out of them if I rewrote them now) and Venom has a special place in my heart. I also really really enjoyed writing my CQL fics because I just adore the characters and found so much to explore with them. My CQL fics just flowed in a way none of my previous ones ever did.

fic you were nervous to post

Definitely” Draw the Curtain” (XueXiao) because of one of the elements in it. I’m still not fully comfortable with it. I did my research and wanted to explore certain things and hopefully I did it in a well.

how do you choose your titles

The hardest part for me! Every. Time. Often it’s just a word--”Empathy” “Relief” “Feral” and sometimes it’s a line from the fic that I feel encapsulates the theme (or is simply prosaic enough to work--”The Backroom”). For “Fractured Ice,” it’s the name of LXC’s flute (I’m sure it can be translated many other ways too) and I felt it worked on a thematic level.

Also for “Fractured Ice” I used lines from Halsey’s “Control,” overthinking it every step of the way.

do you outline

Most of my fanfic are one-shots, so no on that, but I do write notes when they pop into my head. I have a Violent Spider & Wen Zhuliu backstory fic in the works where I have 13 chapters outlined. So yes for my longer stuff.

hi!! i think for me, lengthy would be ~100k or more, so that's what i'll include in the list below! if you want a bit shorter (i have so many bookmarks in the 50k - 100k range let me know!!) and uh if there's a specific fandom or pairing... also feel free to drop back by and let me know!

upon our silver bridge (mdzs, lan xichen x jiang wanyin, post-canon, canon divergence, 443k+) - yeah okay this pairing is not my !! usual !! i know i know. BUT the mythology incorporated in this fic was SO cool and there are FOOTNOTES, and the writing and the character development is really beautiful. also, LONG.

love, in fire and blood (mdzs, lan wangji x wei wuxian, canon divergence, arranged marriage au, 360k+) - back to my ROOTS baby!! this one is a SLOWWW burn with some lovely moments of domesticity and a dose of political intrigue. and they're in loooove they just have. valid concerns about their whole situation!!

you can tell everybody this is your song (911, eddie diax x evan buckley, canon divergence, 470k+ over 24 works) - yes this is the fireman show, yes one of the firemen just told the other fireman that he's named him legal guardian of his son if something happens to him. IN CANON. anyway this is the creme de la creme of 911 writers and also this series is much better than the actual show. characters true to form, good writing, and the Romance and Drama of it all... unmatched.

it starts in the middle (carry on, simon snow x baz pitch, college au, 130k) - okay HEADS UP this is written in first person and jumps from narrator to narrator to match the style of the carry on books, so if that's not your jam it's not your jam! that being said it's well-written and it's all about the *clenches fist* love you find in places you don't expect, if only you let yourself see it.

lessons in cartography (aftg, neil josten x andrew minyard, post-canon, 121k+ and a sequel that's ~70k if you're vibin with it) - this is the classic canon continuation but i'm trying to hit a range of fandoms here so i couldn't in good conscience leave it off! i don't know that they're uh, romantic in some senses but like they Love Each Other Very Much.

playing on (aftg, jean moreau x jeremy knox, canon-compliant, 142k+) - this fic is probably the best aftg fic i've read in terms of making exy seem like a sport! so much of jeremy's life is wrapped up in being the captain of a division i college program and this fic reflects that thank god. author understands how a sport works UNLIKE NORA but anyway. jeremy, jean, falling in love and staying in love.

switch (star trek aos, jim kirk x leonard mccoy, academy era, canon divergence, 230k+) - sorry i literally include this fic in every fic rec list i have ever made but. it's just that good. len mccoy pov, and he's so dry and whip-smart and also so empathetic!! and he loves jim before he ~loves~ him you know and i fuck with that!! it's my favorite fic honestly like it's literally in my ebooks library with a cover i drew i really feel passionate about this one lmao maybe i should reread it

helloo i just wanted to say that i loved your "tiao." fic; its title is so elegant and i love seeing lan xichen in his element, thriving,, etc. :D also, would you happen to have any fic recs in addition to your ao3 bookmarks?

i’m so glad you liked tiao.! of the three fics i have up on ao3, it is definitely my fave... i want to write thousands and thousands more words of post-canon lxc being happy, and jc & wwx pestering the shit out of each other, and little gusu children being taught by a gentle but firm zewu-jun... maybe one day, when my drawing muse calms down a bit.

anyways - fic recs.

i’ll admit that i really don’t read that many fics... a lot of them get me way too emotional and my poor heart can’t handle it 😭😂 but umm... hm. other than the ones in my bookmarks...

i really love @baoshan-sanren‘s nielan arranged marriage au. before reading it, nielan existed in my head as a ship that made sense to me, but one that i really only had a very vague understanding of. after reading it, i fell head-over-heels for nielan and have not looked back since. if you’ve ever felt pain from one of my nielan pieces, please blame them hahaha (not actually) (they’re wonderful) (they deserve nothing but the highest praise & kindest compliments)

@hunxi-guilai writes amazing stuff as well; you can find various snippets on their blog, and all of them are a delight to read, both because they so so well written (just, like, in terms of the prose and the perfect characterizations, pacing, wordplay, etc.) and because of all the cultural/historical knowledge that’s peppered here and there, which make the characters feel like they truly live in a certain time and culture. the english-speaking mdzs fandom is really fucking lucky to have writers like them.

also @bilboo‘s wonderful summer camp au should’ve been in my ao3 bookmarks but it wasn’t by the time this ask was sent bc i’m an idiot and a fool. i’m savoring it slowly and am only through the first handful of chapters, but it’s such a fun read, as is all of perkynurples’ writing. the characters are brighter and lighter than they are in canon, yet they are still so perfectly themselves. and the entire concept of the au itself is just so fucking good. please give it (and all of her writing) a look!

Hi!

1. If you’re an author, how many WIPs do you currently have? (Be honest!)

If you’d asked me ten hours ago, it would have been eight, but now that Qinghe Jue is finished and posted I’m down to seven! Nevermore (Pacific Rim AU for MDZS/CQL), and A Court of Azeroth and Prythian (A Court of Thorns and Roses and World of Warcraft crossover) are the only ones that currently have chapters posted (although ACOAAP is currently on a lengthy hiatus for a range of personal reasons, but it will eventually be finished). I’m also working on another two for MDZS/CQL, two for Guardian, and a crossover fic between MDZS/CQL and Guardian. I have a few more plotbunnies kicking around, but none of those are formed enough to start working on yet.

3. Do you prefer canonverse or AUs?

That’s a really hard question, because it actually depends on the ‘verse, for both reading and writing. I love both options for all ‘verses, but I’m a huge fan of MDZS/CQL AUs, and a bigger fan of Guardian drama AUs that make sure weilan eventually get a happy ending. For some of my older fandoms, like Star Trek and Sailor Moon, I tend to prefer canonverse.

11. Kid fic or childhood friends?

I don’t mind kidfic, especially if it features A-Yuan, but childhood friends, all the way.

18. Do you have a fic reading/writing routine?

For writing, I really should, but...no. I am a writing gremlin. I try to get at least a few sentences written each evening, though.

For reading, I check for updates to fics I have bookmarked about twice a day, generally around lunchtime and in the evening, and trawl through AO3 for new fics to read or add to my reading list once or twice a week.

All right! Bearing in mind that today I am extremely flustered and extremely fond (partly due to a certain fic, but also just in general. I’m in a good mood today. It’s nice) and that there are 650 fics in my bookmarks on AO3, I’m gonna try to keep this to a single fandom. And in honor of the lovely @mylastbraincql who tagged me, I will try to keep this to MDZS fandom of which I only, currently have 81 fics bookmarked (but I have a pile more in my TBR queue)

SO Let’s begin!

“Slow Burn” or “Love at First Sight” - Now don’t get me wrong, I have a fond place in my heart for “Love at first sight” fics too. But usually only in the context of slow burn mutual pining there after. so yes, fall in love quickly, but don’t do anything about it for a long time. But yes, love me a slow burn. This series is slow burning and super cute. This fic was also a beautiful slow burn.

“Fake Dating” or “Secret Dating” - I don’t think I’ve ever really encountered secret dating? But fake dating, mmmm. Especially fake dating where they end up catching feels! (I know I’ve read so many fics with this but I cannot find a single one right now, what the heck...)

“Enemies Annoyances to Lovers” or “Friends to Lovers” - Friends to lovers is super sweet, but, well, I prefer some darker emotions in my reading. Though I suppose there could be dark emotions there too... I don’t think I’ve ever really read it. Annoyances to lovers. Oh dear. This fic, I think, probably fits the trope best?

“Oh no there’s only one bed...” or Long-distance with correspondence - I love this trope. It’s hilarious to me. Hmm... I don’t think I’ve actually read all that much of it for this fandom, but it does come up in this fic.

Hurt/Comfort or Amnesia - Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of hurt comfort in amnesia, but I do prefer just straight up hurt/comfort. Like this fic, and this one.

Fantasy AU or Modern AU - Yes. All of the yes. gimme all of it. I love all of it. I love every single possible type of AU. I will read a million AUs! But here, lemme find some specific examples for this one. Fantasy & Modern (I admittedly have more examples of modern than fantasy, but they’re all so good! And I’m only sharing one modern under this particular heading to make it fair.)

Mutual Pining or Domestic Bliss - Pining in general is just my jam, okay? Mutual Pining? *wheezes* I love it. It slays me every single time. I have so many freaking emotions about pining. I pine for pining fics, you do not understand. Rip my heart out. This one is mild on the pining, but I love it. And here’s one that’s actually mutual pining like I’m supposed to be giving examples of >.>;

Smut or Fluff - So this one is actually a really hard choice for me? I don’t actually particularly like Fluff or Smut as far as fics go, but I am more likely to choose Smut over fluff. Largely in part because the higher rated fics tend to have story lines that I enjoy more. I’m also a huge sap and get easily overwhelmed by fluff, so I try not to turn into a giggling goof too often. But anyway. Here’s a Smut. and a Fluff. For your reading pleasure.

Canon-compliant (missing scenes) or Fix-it fics -Yes! yes to both! Oh goodness, I love both of these ideas very much. I love when people expand on a canon in ways that still comply. I also love when they tweak things to make them work! Compliant Okay, I admit, that one doesn’t quite fit the criteria because it’s technically a continuation instead of a missing scene, but I’m counting it anyway. Fix-It This series is one of my fave fix-its. Largely because I just freaking adore Mo Xuanyu.

Alternate universe or Future fic - Both, both is good! I am weak for both of these. Possibly more for AUs but I will definitely get equally excited about both. Here’s one of my fave AUs. And my fave future fic series.

One-shot or Multi-chapter - Honestly, I can go either way on this. It really depends on my mood and how much time I have. Though with this fandom and their propensity for one-shots that are over 20,000 words... But I do love it. Here is a painfully long, but absolutely gorgeous one-shot that I love. and here is a kind of silly multi-chapter (that’s actually shorter than the one shot) that I enjoyed thoroughly.

Kid fic or Road trip fic - Oh I love Kid fics! Fics where the characters are kids, or have kids. Either way. I love them very much. So many of my fandoms, this one included, do involve a lot of traveling in general, but that’s usually in a more mission oriented sense. I’m not really sure any of them would travel for the sake of traveling. (I can’t find any examples of the characters being kiddos in my bookmarks >.<) here’s another where they have kids because it’s too cute

Reincarnation or Character death - I’m gonna be honest, character death is just depressing for the most part. I will, sometimes, read very short fics involving it, but it’s not a favorite. Reincarnation fics however? Oh heck yes. (>.< I don’t think I have any examples of reincarnation fics tho)

Arranged Marriage or Accidental Marriage - I know that, like, accidental marriage is the name of the game in this fandom. And I do love it. It’s hilarious. But arranged marriage AUs have a special place in my heart. This is one of my faves.

High School College Romance or Middle-aged Romance - I have absolutely nothing against middle aged romance (heck, in this fandom that’s practically canon) but I admit, younger romances resonate a bit more for me, and I am more likely to click on them. (Probably because I’m not too much older than those tropes 26, gods, it’s been years since I was in school, what the heck) Here’s a cute little college AU.

Time Travel or Isolated Together - Ooo, this one is fun. In a sense, these two tie closely for me because there’s a lot of... Overlap? or at least, a lot of potential for it. In general anyway. It usually doesn’t work that way, and certainly not for this fandom. I’ll admit, I haven’t read any outright time travel fics for these lovely characters, yet. I’m pretty sure I have a couple in my TBR. As for Isolated together, that has so much potential. I like it both in the sweet ways and the angsty ones. This is the closest to a time travel fic as I’ve read for this fandom. And here is a cute little “isolated together” fic.

Neighbors or Roommates - These AUs are, yes. I love them very very much. There’s so much potential for them. I don’t technically have any recs that fit either of the above for this heading that I haven’t already linked, but... Here’s a super sweet fic that they become roommates at the end of ^-^

Sci-fi AU or Magic AU - Give Me All The AUs. No, but seriously. I adore Sci-fi and magic. Now this fandom does make it a little harder for the magic AU because canon is technically magic, but! It’s still a lot of fun to read. Unfortunately, the only Sci-fi au I’ve read is already linked up under the Fantasy header (it’s both, hush). But here is my all time fave alternative magic fic for this fandom. (And it just updated the final chapter!!)

Angst or Humor - *cackles* oh goodness me. Angst. Angst all the way. If my heart feels like it’s being forcibly removed from my chest, it’s the best. Humor is... not really my cup of tea in general. I enjoy laughing, no doubt, but my humor is pretty dark so it’s way easier for me to be amused by an angsty fic than a humorous one. Here are some angsty fics that ripped my heart to pieces.
